[Dovecot] What's the best way to authenticate against Active Directory?

Hi all, I'm working on a replacement for a legacy linux mail server: courier POP/IMAP, Postfix, OpenLDAP. One of the requirements of the new mail server is to authenticate against our AD infrastructure (I'll still keep a userdb in OpenLDAP). SSO is not required since most of the clients don't log into our domain. The current system has about 1,000 concurrent users on it during the day (almost all are IMAP users). Inbox size varies but is generally very high 1GB+. I'm considering dovecot as a replacement for courier IMAP on the new server mainly for performance reasons. Cyrus was also considered but I'd rather work with maildir format inboxes. I'm in the process of installing a "proof of concept" server with CentOS 5 and dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5. the production system will most likely run on RHEL Question: What's the best way (most reliable/fastest) to authenticate dovecot to AD? If someone is doing this in a production environment can you offer any hints on configuration for performance or what to expect in general? Thanks, chrisj

[Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0.3: mbox problems for newly created users

Hi, I am having problems with Dovecot 1.0.3 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 when using a new user account without any mbox files present. Directory /home/$user/.imap_mail/ does not exist when Thunderbird first tries to login using IMAP to the account. On login this directory is created with a zero byte Trash file and .subscriptions containing string "Trash", so far, so good. Now I create a new message in Thunderbird and save it as draft. A zero byte file "Drafts" is created in /home/$user/.imap_mail/ but the message I wanted to save got _lost_, /home/$user/.imap_mail/Drafts stays at zero bytes. The next message I try to save as draft finds its way to the Drafts mbox however. Please note that no /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox has been created although a inbox is shown in Thunderbird. When I move the saved message from Drafts to the inbox folder shown in Thunderbird, it gets saved in /var/mail/$user instead of /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox, I guess this is due to the use of the mbox_snarf plugin, right? /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox is the maildrop for Exim, which handles incoming mails, but in this scenario the user did not receive any emails yet. If I manually create /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox, then moving a message from Drafts to the Thunderbird-displayed inbox works. How to fix this problem? Especially messages getting lost is really bad because I am in the process of changing our mail server setup from Exim/UW-Imapd to Exim/Dovecot, where I have to move 100+ /var/mail/$user mbox files to /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox. But when Dovecot can not properly save files to previous non-existing mbox files, like Drafts, this is really a problem. [Dovecot] IP based virtual users: stripping login domain?

Hello. I have a likely unusual request regarding IP based virtual dovecot users. When you specify a passdb passwd-file name containing "%d", then the domain portion is stripped from the login username, before the user is checked in the passwd-file. However, if you specify a passwd-file name containing "%l" (the local IP), the domain portion of the login is not stripped off before the username is checked in the passwd-file. This behavior makes sense, and should be considered the right and proper thing to do. But in this case, I want to do something different anyway. In the setup I'm working on, most logins will use domain based virtual usernames. However, if a customer logs in with an unknown domain in their login username, I'd like to fall back to IP-based virtualization, based on the local IP they connect to. I can't use auth_username_format to strip off %d, because that would break the domain based virtualization. What I need is an option to make %l work the way %d already works; or a format inside a passwd-file which allows for partial matches in the "username" column. If I can do this directly using a passwd-file, I'd like to do that. It seems like it'd be easy if I were using an SQL back end, but that's not an option. It's possible with an external authentication script, but I want to explore more direct configuration options, first. Does anyone have any recommendations? If what I want can't already be done, and I patched dovecot to do one of these things, how likely would it be to have that patch merged into the project? [Dovecot] Sent / Drafts / Trash folders and subscribing ?

Hello, I am trying to migrate our configuration that use Courier-imap to dovecot, appart some users that have some issues with pop and leave messages on servers that retreive all mails into their mailboes... but this is ok for me :).. One problem that it seems that Sent / Drafts and Trash folder are not automaticaly added as subscribed folder... I also finally did some larger API changes and code cleanups that I had been planning on doing for a long time. I also changed copyright notices in the code to: /* Copyright (c) xxxx-2007 Dovecot authors, see the included COPYING file */ So my name isn't there anymore. It wasn't always correct anyway. I'm planning on updating the -2007 year at the beginning of each year to all the files. It's annoying to try to keep it updated manually.

Hi, I have an RHEL4 machine running dovecot-1.0.3 + postfix-2.3.2 + postfixadmin + mysql-4.1.20-2.RHEL4.1 + amavisd-new-2.5.2-1. The machine only has a gig of memory in it, I am trying to keep it running until I get new hardware to replace it in a couple of weeks. For the most part it works as advertised but every once in a while it stops talking to the auth server. I think I have tracked this to periods of high auth requests. [Dovecot] Dovecot Sieve crash

I just transferred the files in my home directory from an x86_64 machine to an i686 machine. This included the .dovecot.sieve and .dovecot.sievec files in my home root, and the Dovecot index files in my ~/Maildir directory. Everything seemed to be working until I tried sending an email that triggers a Sieve "redirect" command, then I got the following in the logs. I then tried the same dovecot.sieve file using a separate account which has always been on the i686 machine (and the index files have always been written there too), and the Sieve "redirect" worked fine. [Dovecot] Dovecot Periodically Stops Authenticating Users

Hi, It seems that my dovecot installation periodically stops authenticating users. Restarting dovecot resolves the issue temporarily. I'm authenticating via PAM to OpenLDAP on a CentOS 4 box. I've seen several related posts about this issue but no resolution. [Dovecot] Migration woes from tpop mbox to dovecot maildir

I was hoping some one might be able to offer me some advice on a little problem I have. I am looking to A. move from mbox to maildir B. looking to move from tpop to dovecot to bring both pop and imap under the same program. anyways the problem I am having is this tpop3d mbox uses MD5 sum of the mailbox headers in hex which is option %m in the uidl section but the problem is when dovecot convert plugin runs and makes in a maildir it fails to find the md5 of this because it is only used for mboxs. if I change this from %m to %Mf it downloads every message on the clients computer which is not desirable. Instead fsck is run which preserves as much of the original index as possible. This is important with dbox at least since index files are the only place where the latest flag/keyword changes are. Recent alphas were also modifying process's fd limits. The current behavior is: - If current fd limit is less than login_max_processes_count (imap +pop3) + max_mail_processes, log a warning at startup: "fd limit 1024 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load (more than 1234). Either grow the limit or change login_max_processes_count and max_mail_processes settings" - Since 1024 is a common default limit, I dropped max_mail_processes default to 512. - Login processes drop their fd limit to the maximum number of fds needed, plus a few more just in case.

[Dovecot] Proxy problems with 1.0.5 !

Hi I am trying to do a staged migration over to dovecot, but having troubles at the first hurdle. I setup the proxy feature to redirect most of our users back to the current Courier imap/pop server, and it's partly working, but I'm getting some serious errors using Thunderbird and IMAP. Now, I had expected the proxying to be fairly transparent and basically just dovecot doing an auth and then passing the stream on to the other server? My problem is that using Thunderbird I can read all my folders OK, but I can't save anything in my Sent Items or Drafts folders... Basically I get errors every time I try and send an email, or try to save to the draft folder. Curiously, directly browsing into those folders works fine, as does deleting emails, and apparently copying them works fine also... Why is the saving of sent messages failing...? The setup is basically taking a working Thunderbird install, changing the server name from pointing at the Courier server to point at the dovecot server - dovecot in turn is told to proxy back to the original server. All I'm getting from Thunderbird is an "Invalid Command" response. Is there an easy way to get a look inside the imap stream to try and see what's failing? Any suggestions on why this is happening at all? One idea is that I have setup completely different namespaces in Dovecot, (with a hidden namespace which should be courier compatible), but I wouldn't have expected this to affect the Proxy stuff at all?! [Dovecot] auth_default_realm for different listeners

We provide POP3 service for several realms, each of which has a substantial number of users logging in with no realm (bare username). We would like to use Dovecot, but I haven't been able to findout how to vary auth_default_realm for each listener. My most recent attempt was to set up one auth {} block for each realm with a different auth_default_realm and socket master path. I then set up one protocol pop3 {} block for each realm, listening on different IP addresses and with a auth_socket_path corresponding to the auth block for that listener. I'm not sure if I'm on the right track here, but I'm seeing two problems: 1. Hi! I am currently testing a setup with dovecot's lda, the cmusieve plugin, pysieved and the avelsieve plugin for squirrelmail. The issue I am stumbling upon is that avelsieve is generating folder names including the namespace prefix when creating "fileinto" rules. E.g.: A rule: If the header "Precedence" contains "bulk", then file it into the folder INBOX.bulk. Also keep a copy in INBOX, marked as deleted. translates into sieve: require ["fileinto","reject","vacation","imapflags","relational","comparator-i;ascii-numeric","regex","notify"]; if header :contains "Precedence" "bulk" { fileinto "INBOX.bulk"; addflag "\\Deleted"; keep; } But what happens when a matching email is delivered is that a new mailbox ".INBOX.bulk" in the user's Maildir is created. I.e. the email is not delivered to ~/.Maildir/.bulk as intended, but into ~/.Maildir/.INBOX.bulk, creating the new folder on the fly. The same happens when trying to fileinto folders from other namespaces. It seems that either avelsieve is generating "too much" and should remove the prefix (at least for INBOX) or dovecot's deliver is not able to use the namespaces definition in dovecot.conf correctly when interpreting sieve's fileinto directive. Did I miss something? hi all, after i successed in install / configure dovecot, and transform mbox to maildir i got error in outlook expres. outlook expres is authenticated . dovecot accep user/passwd. when i try to receive folder list is giving me error: "downloading folder from server.ro" "one or more problems occurred downloading your list of folders from your account. Hi every one, first thanks for the great job, I switched successfully from courier imap a few months ago and both the migration and maintenance went smoothly from then on. The reason I switched was gssapi support (and the easier debug) and now I have thunderbird on Linux connecting in an SSO fashion through kerberos/GSSAPI (works great). Users should be able to access their mail throught a webmail too (eg. eGroupware). I have already checked for kerberos authentication on Apache, however there seems to be no way to have ticket forwarding throught PHP. AFIAK there is thus no way to use kerberos for php-imap --> dovecot authentication. The only information available seems to be the username. So here is my question : how do people on this mailing list handle kerberos authentication with webmail? Do you use other kind of authentication on privileged port (ie with access only from apache) and just do a login/nopassword authentication (like an uid base authentication through ldapi:/// on an ldap directory for example) ? Hello, I am trying to move from Courier-imap to dovecot.... Even if the processes to move logical (eg name spaces etc...) went very and without any problem, I've some etrange behavior when Imap client is Mac OS X Mail.app. I've got a big mailbox that have about 3 / 4G of mail in several folder (lots !!!)... After a long time, the OS X client say error : "Too Many opened files". I have check on the servers (a FreeBSD farm of 3 servers using freebsd ports of dovecot)... And nothing special... A question : why do I have never this kind of message on courier imap and why do I get this on dovecot... ? Configuration file on demand... if needed... THanks, /Xavier

I have dovecot 1.0.5 installed on an OpenBSD 4.1 box and an OS X Server 10.4.10 box. Sure you've all heard it before, because of the pipe error, no more login processes can be launched, and I have to restart the server. dovecot: Sep 13 05:50:00 Error: pipe() failed: Too many open files I first thought this was the issue with kqueue, but I've since recompiled making sure to use poll. This also happened with 1.0.3 and 1.0.2. It also happens very specifically after a dictionary attack that lasts usually about an hour, unless I can catch it earlier. (Around 18,000 login attempts) ex: dovecot: Sep 13 05:49:58 Info: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<aaron>, method=PLAIN, rip=62.161.41.32, lip=<local ip> dovecot: Sep 13 05:49:58 Info: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<adm>, method=PLAIN, rip=62.161.41.32, lip=<local ip> dovecot: Sep 13 05:49:58 Info: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<account>, method=PLAIN, rip=62.161.41.32, lip=<local ip> But after the attack has subsided for a period of time, I still have the number of file descriptors maxed out for the dovecot process. I've increased the number available to have a higher roof, but that doesn't fix the problem. Wondering if anyone else has seen this issue, and also in a generic problem. How are others dealing the the problem of being attacked in this method? Is there a max number of login tries for a given ip address within a period of time that I'm missing? :) Thanks, Patrick

Our current virtual mailbox configuration is not compatible with one of the assertions in the dovecot quota plugin's assertions in quota-dirsize.c. I believe the assertion is incorrect, but I would also be happy if I could get the same result with a better configuration setting. Here is a sample passdb entry which causes the quota assertion to fail: test(a)example.com:<snip>:3007:1000::/usr/boxes/username/example.com::userdb_mail=mbox:~/test^/.imap:INBOX=~/test userdb_uid=3007 userdb_gid=1000 userdb_home=/usr/boxes/username/example.com userdb_quota=dirsize:storage=100 The imap folder is "~/test^/.imap" and the INBOX is "~/test". As you can see, these are in different locations, but the INBOX string happens to be a substring of the imap folder directory. An example of the failed assertion error: Aug 31 16:44:13 www2 dovecot: IMAP(test(a)example.com): file quota-dirsize.c: line 180 (quota_count_path_add): assertion failed: (!is_file) This particular error log line was generated by dovecot 1.0.3, but the code in quota-dirsize.c is the same in dovecot 1.1 alpha3's version of quota-dirsize.c: 131 if (strncmp(count_path[i].path, path, strlen(path)) == 0) { 132 /* the new path contains the existing path */ 133 i_assert(!is_file); 134 count_path += i; 135 break; 136 } First, quota_count_path_add() is called for directory "~/test^/.imap" and it succeeds. When it is subsequently called for file "~/test": - the strncmp matches because "~/test" is a substring of "~/test^/.imap" - the assertion fails because "~/test" is a file and not a directory It seems to me that instead of asserting !is_file, it would be better to simply skip the conditional in that case, since a path variable that is a file should never be tested to see whether it contains an existing path. if (!is_file && strncmp(count_path[i].path, path, strlen(path)) == 0) { /* the new path contains the existing path */ count_path += i; break; } But this also has a bug: if path is a directory which substring matches count_path[i].path, but the same path with a directory separator appended to it does not substring match count_path[i].path, then it is a different path and does not contain the existing path. For example, if count_path[i] is the directory /usr/home/test/mailbox_folders, and path is the directory /usr/home/test/mailbox, then /usr/home/test/mailbox does not contain/usr/home/test/mailbox_folders, and this condition should fail. If some other code were to enforce that /usr/home/test/mailbox be terminated with a directory separator, then this is not a problem and my patch should work. I hope this makes sense. Hi, I'm running FreeBSD, Dovecot, Postfix (virtual users), MySQL, Squirrelmail. I have installed squirrelmail-quota_usage-plugin, but I cannot make it work. It mentions "If you have an IMAP server with QUOTA Extension capability...". In dovecot.conf I have enabled "mail_plugins = quota" near protocol pop3 and protocol lda, near protocol imap I have "mail_plugins = quota imap_quota". Near " plugin { ..." I have "quota = maildir:storage=204800". I think that the problem of why I don't see quota in Squirrelmail is in file dovecot-sql near user_query. I have my users mailboxes in such format: /usr/local/virtual/domain.tld/username and my user_query looks like this: user_query = SELECT maildir, 125 AS uid, 125 AS gid, concat('maildir:storage=', quota) AS quota FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' AND active = '1', I think that in my user_query I'm missing something. I do not get any errors in the dovecot and dovecot-debug logs, everything works fine, but I still can't see quota.

Dovecot v1.1.alpha4 imap after some time stops responding. It can not be restarted as /etc/init.d/dovecot restart killall imap also does not help killall -9 imap and then restart does help in log I see message (repeted periodically) that Sep 12 09:50:02 localhost postfix/local[22533]: C7057753B6: to=<username@domain> , relay=local, delay=5195, delays=5156/0.01/0/39, dsn=4.2.0, status=deferr ed (cannot update mailbox /home/username/Mailbox for user username. unable to lo ck for exclusive access: Resource temporarily unavailable) lsof -n shows that the file is is open by imap process.

Hi, I am testing dovecot 1.0.3 alongside my existing courier installation and a number of my emails are heading to the top of the inbox even though they are rather old. Closer inspection shows that my mailclient (Thunderbird on Win32) is showing me some screwey dates for a number of messages. One example is an email which says: Date: 2007-08-21 11:42:43 But in TB I see the date shown as only: 03:27 ie just a time and no date OK, the date above is clearly not an RFC date, but any idea why this is showing up only under Dovecot? Is it a dovecot date handling issue? Cheers Ed W

Hi All, I'm new to dovecot (coming from cyrus) and have a bit of a problem setting up postfix + dspam + dovecot. 1. postfix + dovecot: works like a charm. Using "mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver" in postfix main.cf 2. adding dspam to the equation: unable to deliver: net_connect(/usr/var/run/dovecot/auth-master) failed: No such file or directory Using "mailbox_transport = lmtp:unix:/var/tmp/dspam.sock" in postfix main.cf (instead of the above mailbox_command), and the corresponding setting in master.cf. In /etc/dspam.conf I'm using... In order to preserve anonymity of the users I setup the mailbox as follows: drwxr-xr-t 5 root fb 4096 2007-09-05 16:18 ./ drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2007-09-05 16:16 ../ drwx-wx-wt 2 spamd fb 12288 2007-09-10 16:17 cur/ hence, with read permission for the spam bot only. When Thunderbird copies mails from the same mail account into the folder, it seems like it tries to select the mail box afterwards, then a "Internal error occured. Refer to server log for more information." because of permission denied. When one copies mail from yet another account into the SPAM box, no such message appears. I guess, Thunderbird does not try the refresh the message count. Well, is there a possiblity to setup a Write-Only mailbox, with Dovecot v1.0.3 with the ACL plugin? Is there a working setup for write-only mailboxes with the ACL plugin? Hi All, I've recently recompiled Postifx & Dovecot and I'm hitting an error I can't seem to chase down. Is this the best way to get dovecot's pop3 process to run under xinetd? This is what I did after I installed postfix and dovecot. I am using Debian. I have a weird issue where several users are recieving the same email's multiple times. Each email has a different que id, but are exactly the same otherwise. I thought at first this was a new spam, but I have local users doing the same thing. Im not sure where to start looking for the root of this problem. Seems to be pretty widespread across multiple platforms. I currently utilize openldap for user database, sendmail, Dovecot-Imap, and horde webmail. Im not sure where to start digging for this problem, Ive scanned through all my log files and havent found anything. Today, i lost connection with the mail server. I think that there are some problem with the index file and it's log file. Following is the log for losing connection. I am getting random disconnects from my imap session, dificulties to revconnect, very sluggish behaviour when changing between mail folders also frequent and rapidly repititive messages on te client "mailserver x.x.x.x is not a imap4 server" I am running dovecot 1.0.rc2 from ports on OpenBSD 4.0 on a PIII, 500MHz 512MB My set up is very small - a webserver with a single imap account on it for myself and my wife and a pop3 account for a printserver. The clients are both Thunderbird on Linux (Ubuntu7.04 and Ubuntu 6.06 I have overall maybe 6000 mails distributed over all folders. Hi Is it legal/sensible to use the following in the conf file # default namespace namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } # for backwards compatibility: namespace private { separator = . prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes hidden = yes } The goal would be to migrate away from an Courier server, whilst still supporting clients using their old settings, but going forward they can use the new settings? In particular I always noticed that OE would not set the namespace automatically, so being able to leave it blank would be an advantage (fewer config issues for customers) Grateful if someone could confirm this works ok? Compatibility issues with Thunderbird/OE/Outlook 2003+ in particular? Cheers Ed W

Hi, We are using dovecot version 1.0.3. We have dovecot-ldap configured to authenticate users using ldap database. We are facing the inactivity problem with dovecot. After some hrs of successful working, dovecot logs shows the connection inactive problem with pop3 & imap server, & it starts rejecting the connection requests from clients. The problem goes away once we restart dovecot. The problem occurs again & again after some random time. Please help us in solving this problem. [Dovecot] shared mailbox subfolder permissions

Hi all, when I create a subfolder in a public mailbox the dovecot-shared file is copied for the newly created subfolder and all mails get the owner, group and permissions from the file. Unfortunately the cur, new and tmp folders only get the permissions from the file but owner and group are set according to the creator. This effectivly makes the folder private to the creator. Is this the intended behavior? Is it a bug that has already been fixed in a later version? I am using 1.0.rc29. An example follows. Thanks for your help! Hello, We are running Dovecot 1.0.0 (Debian Etch, Backports.org, OpenSSL) in a production environment and we experience sporadic SSL connection problems. At the moment, it's difficult to tell if the server goes back to normal operation after some time or if it can be reproduces at any time because we have to restart it as soon as we get Nagios alerts. Some tests with openssl s_client have shown difficulties to proceed the SSL handshake (hanging at different stages), or no response to IMAP commands. SSL client used: openssl s_client -host imap -port 993 - First case : s_client hangs on the first output "CONNECTED(00000003)" and there is no handshake at all; - Second case : like the first but the handshake starts after a few minutes; - Third case : the handshake goes fine but the "OK" server banner is never sent (no response to commands); - Fourth case : the greeting banner is received but dovecot will never answer. The configuration file is almost identical to the default and SSL certificate is not the autogenerated one. Log files do not show dying process. I've searched the ML archive for SSL issues but not found related bug. Does anyone use the Backport.org package of Dovecot ? I'm trying to replace procmail with deliver but I'm having problems with the group part of things. I keep getting: Aug 29 16:44:19 dingbat deliver(mimo): open(/var/mail/.temp.dingbat.3969.d1689935a308e0dd) failed: Permission denied Aug 29 16:44:19 dingbat deliver(mimo): file_lock_dotlock() failed with mbox file /var/mail/mimo: Permission denied My primary group is mimo and I think it's trying to use that. I changed it to mail and things work. But I do not want all my users to have a primary group mail. Is there a way I can force deliver to use group mail as group and ignore the per user gid? I tried chmod 6755 /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver but no change. This is on debian/etch, help appreciated.... mimo

Hi folks, My institute's mail server was upgraded to RHEL5 with dovecot 1.0-2.1rc5 recently. And it uses PAM authentication which points to LDAP server. For various reasons I want to use deliver with Postfix and Courier-IMAP, and it seems to work fine except for one thing: deliver creates some dovecot.* index files that Courier never uses (and I assume deliver doesn't need them) Is there a way to prevent that? Thanks, Martin

Hi, please have a look at the attached patch for dovecot-1.0.3 These patch modifies ssl_proxy_get_peer_name() to use the NID_x500UniqueIdentifier as username instead of NID_commonName. The reason is, that the Common Name doesn't have to be unique for the whole mailserver. Example; in germany a lot of people got the first name "Andreas" and the last name "Schulz". Therefore a lot of certificates exists with subjects like this: C=DE,O=ABC,CN=Andreas Schulz/emailAddress=andreas.schulz(a)abc.de C=DE,O=DEF,CN=Andreas Schulz/emailAddress=andreas.schulz(a)def.de ... dovecot couldn't distinguish between these users. So we decide to use certificates with an X509v3 extension NID_x500UniqueIdentifier which allows to extend the subject by an unique ID, e.g. the unix-uid or a database unique key. The new certificates may look like this: C=DE,O=ABC,CN=Andreas Schulz/emailAddress=andreas.schulz(a)abc.de/x500UniqueIdentifier=user1 C=DE,O=DEF,CN=Andreas Schulz/emailAddress=andreas.schulz(a)def.de/x500UniqueIdentifier=user2 With the attached patch the user is taken from this extension and e.g. with userdb=ldap you can use the filter string user_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=%u)) A good solution to use booth, the common name and the UniqueIdentifier is to extend settings like ssl_username_from_cert = no | yes | cn | uid where "yes" is similar to "cn". [Dovecot] Server Timed Out: Outlook Express

Hi all, We just started running Dovecot this fall here on campus v 1.0. I've started getting some trouble reports from users. An Outlook Express users reported seeing the "Server has not responded in 60 seconds" messages. Waiting longer doesn't help, he has to stop/start Outlook Express to get connected again. Also have a Thunderbird user who is seeing that type of behavior first thing in the morning after being logged in all night. He has to stop/restart Thunderbird. Also, have had some reports of "disconnected" showing up on the Outlook2007 status bar. I've looked at the Dovecot log, and don't see any errors. I do see lots of "Disconnected", "Disconnected in IDLE" and "Disconnected: Logged Out". These last two seem normal, if I just see "Disconnected" is that a flag that we're losing connections abnormally? I know version 1.0.3 is out. I've looked at the changes, and the only one I can see that might be related to what we are seeing is the IDLE commmand fix. Was hoping for some advice on whether upgrading might resolve these issue. Hi Timo, some time ago (2007-03-24 and following) I asked whether it was intended that Dovecot deliver bounces mails (by terminating with status 89) if the deliver version is older than the rest of the dovecot installation. [Dovecot] processing Dovecot maildirs with shell scripts

Hello, I have a postfix server which uses procmail as its delivery agent to deliver incoming messages to several maildirs. For several reasons, not really relevant here, I need to process/refilter/sort again the content of these mailboxes before delivering the messages to the _other_ maildirs which Dovecot sees and serves to local or remote imap users. Basically, I need to write some shell scripts that, from cron jobs, regularly do this: foreach file in some_incoming_mailbox/new/ do #process the file and/or set some variable according to its content delete the file or mv it to some_other_maildir/new/ where the actual action and value of some_other_maildir is set every time by the "process the file" part of the script. The part that I still miss is guidelines to do these things safely, that is without losing or corrupting messages or doing anything else that would confuse dovecot. For example, under which conditions it is sure to move or delete (the Unix way, with mv or rm) a message from mailbox1/new/ to mailbox2/new, when the latter is served via dovecot to remote users? What is advisable and most efficient? Use locks (how?), only work on file which are at least one minute old? Should I move the messages to tmp instead of new? What else? Tips or pointers about this are very welcome. Ciao, Marco

At startup i get the message: Unknown dict module: db As far as i understood i have to compile the backend manually an copy it into tho appropirate place. But how can i do this ? Hi, Whitbox Linux 3 (RHEL) Dovecot 1.0.rc29 Using NFS From time to time does all mail get re-downloaded to Thunderbird. I would believe this has something to do with an index problem. I upgraded to 1.0 a few months ago but that didn't work well so I installed version 1.0.rc29 which worked better but we still get this problem from time to time. Is there any way to pass things like "quota=" for the quota plugin to the deliver LDA via the command line or as an environment variable or whatever? I'm a bit unclear on these - give me a moment to ramble on. I should mention I'm using version 1.0.3, my primary backend is LDAP, and I do NOT want to store user mail folders in my LDAP directory. I currently have the following: default_mail_env = maildir:/var/mail/%d/%n passdb ldap { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf } # Instructions for deliver state a userdb is still required if using prefetch userdb ldap { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf } userdb prefetch { } My dovecot-ldap.conf is pretty simple - the trimmed version is: hosts = localhost auth_bind = no user_attrs = %d/%n=mail user_filter = (mail=%u) pass_attrs = (&(userPassword=password)(mail=%u)) user_global_uid = 5000 user_global_gid = 8 I recognize that the pass_attrs is incorrect for a prefetch config - but I couldn't get it to work. My mail folder structure is /var/mail/domain/username. If, under 1.0.3, I can't use the %d/%n variables to build the user/home/mail parameters in the LDAP config, can I do it in the configuration stanza? I have a user that gets client timeout errors when he tries to delete/clean up his massive "Spam" folder (many thousands of mail messages). He uses Thunderbird and has it configured to use "Move to Trash" when he deletes messages. Ok, here's one for the idiot file. I just installed dovecot-1.0.4 on my personal system for testing, a system which has to be the simplest dovecot configuration possible. deliver is barking about something with which version 1.0.3 has no problem. I looked over the wiki, googled, and see nothing wrong. [Dovecot] Two newbie problems

I've started running dovecot on my server under Fedora 7, to act as an IMAPS server for kmail. 1. I see my email fine on my laptop in an IMAPS account, but it doesn't get updated - I mean I don't get any new email - until I run kmail on my server. This isn't a great problem, as I am always logged to the server with ssh, and I just start kmail and stop it after a few minutes. Then I run kmail on my laptop, and the new mail is there. But I assume this is not the intended system? 2. I opted (probably mistakenly) to set ~/Mail/inbox/ as my base IMAPS directory on my server. I'd like to change this to ~/Maildir (I use maildir folders). Is it relatively easy to do this? I tried copying my email to ~/Maildir/ and changing the setting in /etc/dovecot.conf (and restarting dovecot), but for some reason I could not see the email on my laptop. Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.

The wiki <http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy> page says this: "The connections created to the destination server can't be TLS/SSL encrypted.". Hrmm. Right now, with perdition, I'm forcing the use of STARTTLS on the internal connections. I'd just as soon get rid of perdition (to have one less moving part in my architecture), but I need the secure connections. Is there a way to configure dovecot's internal proxy connections to use STARTTLS or some other SSL/TLS level of security? How can I use sieve to move bounces and non delivery reports (i.e. anything with an empty envelope from) to a special mailbox? I placed this snippet at the start of my sieve script require ["envelope", "fileinto"]; if envelope :is "from" "" { fileinto "INBOX.Reports"; stop; } But mails are not moved to the reports mailbox, and they are still processed by the rest of the script.

Posting here, as Dovecot seems to be the premier IMAP server available. In case anyone is looking for something to work on, I found today that Google Desktop only understands email clients that keep mail on the client, and it would be nice if there was a plugin that understood IMAP. [Dovecot] Dovecot Imap Stopped working

Dovecot has been working fine for months. We are using 1.0. Come in to work today and dovecot quit working POP3 and IMAP. I restarted the service and everything started working except IMAP? We use Dovecot as an authentication method for outgoing mail and it works. I can't telnet to myhostname.com 143, Squirrelmail will NOT work either. Where is a good place to start looking for signs of the problem. When we restart we get no errors, which is strange? K

The imapd spec has a provision for an alert pop-up of any ASCII text message contained in /etc/imapd.alert on the IMAP server. Can I assume this is implemented on DC? [Dovecot] Deliver setgid failed: Operation not permitted

Hi all, I'm having trouble getting a new Postfix/Dovecot server up and running. I'm trying to run v1.0.3, using MySQL tables setup list postfix admin. This is a RHEL5 server. Getting this error tail /var/log/dovecot/dovecot-deliver.log deliver(none(a)example.com): Sep 04 19:44:15 Fatal: setgid(12) failed: Operation not permitted That 12 being my vmail user. I'm not exactly sure what's trying to setgid, nor how to fix it, any ideas would be appreciated. Hi guys. I installed dovecot 1.0.3 with sieve plugin. It looks like sieve is loaded fine by dovecot [1]. I set up dovecot to use sieve globally: protocol lda { mail_plugins = cmusieve quota sieve_global_dir = /usr/local/etc/sieve/Junk ..... } And created a sieve file which is supposed to move all the Spam marked by dspam to users's Junk folder (listed as Junk in the subscriptions file) : require ["fileinto"]; # Move spam to Junk folder if header :contains ["X-DSPAM-Result:"] "Spam" { fileinto "Junk"; # Stop here so that we do not reply on spams stop; } I also set up postfix to use pipe mail through dovecot: mailbox_command = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver The problem is dovecot seems to be ignoring my sieve rule and delivers emails directly to INBOX. Any idea how to fix that? Hello, >From what I have read on the dovecot site, it's possible to create a plugin for a custom data store format. We have emails in a custom format in a database and would like to create a plugin for accessing these emails through dovecot. Is there any supporting documentation from creating a plugin like this? Hello, I try to run dovecot 1.0.3 on RHEL 5.1 beta. As soon as I start it I get the following output and it's impossible to IMAP-log in over network. I've been following the list for a while and it seems to ring a bell about setting the correct ulimit, but I can't find the thread anymore, so I need to ask. :( Here's the debug output I've put together. GCC only warns because of this, but DEC C is known to consider this an error: Error: file-cache.c, line 79: In this statement, "new_base" and "(-1)" may not be compared for equality or inequality. if (new_base == MAP_FAILED) { And indeed, unsigned integers and -1 are rarely equal. -- Gabucino

[Dovecot] Calculate Index size for harddisk sizing

I need to get a hand on the 'usual size of an index' to do some hard disk sizing. Is that possible at all? I know their size depends a lot on what the clients index. Those clients will mostly be Outlook and Thunderbird and they will be doing more POP than IMAP if that helps to bring it down to some estimation. [Dovecot] Migrate 0.99 MBox into 1.0rc15-2

Hello, I have old MBOX-trees from a dovecot-0.99-installation. I would like to integrate them into dovecot 1.0.0rc15 with Maildir. Sadly the old dovecot is no lonfger running, otherwise imapsync could be used. Does anybody can give some hints how to start? TIA Stephan

[Dovecot] rule of thumb for indexing overhead

I realize it's hard to be precise about this, but does anyone have a feel or rule of thumb for a couple of aspects of indexing overhead? 1. Proportionally, how much space does it take for all 4 files? If I want to give my users a quota of 100 MB for messages, how much real space should I plan for so that I won't run out of space for indexing? 2. What's the overhead in rebuilding index files? Suppose I use an LDA other than dovecot, so at least the INBOX index is frequently getting out of date. Does it cost much (in CPU, memory, and disk IO) to rebuild the index files? (I'm using maildir.)
