[Dovecot] Password auth with Postfixadmin & MySQL

I am trying to get Postfix, Dovecot, Postfixadmin, and MySQP all working together. I'm using 1.0.5 atm. I've hit a point where I can't seem top get dovecot to auth to the MySQL password database It seems to see the user OK, but I can't seem to get a password match. MySQL has password stored as MD5, as per Postfixadmin. When I add plain-md5 to the auth mechanisms dovecot seems to use plain and fails. Hi list, I want to test performance of dovecot-1.0.5 on OpenBSD and FreeBSD. I want to implement a small pop3s/imaps server with ~3000 users. I had tested dovecot-1.0.5 with vpopmail+mysql but I don't know if the performance is ok. Anybody have test with imaptest? [Dovecot] user_global_uid and user_global_gid

Hi to all, I am using the new beta release 1.1. I see that parameters user_global_uid and user_global_gid are no more used in dovecot-ldap.conf. That means that, as I use LDAP as backend I am obliged to se t these two fileds in LDAP for each user even if they are always the same, as I use virtual domains. I see that I can set the in dovecot.conf the parameters mail_uid and mail_gid, but even if I set these parameters, when I do the query in LDAP (for retrieving other useful parameters) I have the error: userdb(<email address>) didn't return uid but... I don't want to take uid parameter from LDAP, I want to set it globally but I still want to do an LDAP query. Is there a way to do this in the new evrsion or I cannot do anymore this? I started a new wiki page to list incompatibilities between v1.0 and v1.1: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.1 Fixes since alpha6: - deliver + maildir caused "UID 0 in transaction log" errors - deliver + maildir no longer blocks if dovecot-uidlist.lock file exists. The mail is simply delivered without updating uidlist or indexes. - Quota handling fixes, especially dict quota - etc.

hi there I noticed the following behaviour with auth backend pam and "args session=yes *" configuration: - login with "plain": pam session gets opend - login with "gssapi" (kerberos): pam session isn't opend (-> no $HOME will be created) Is this a bug or just a limitation by GSSAPI (maybe gssapi works around PAM)? - Thomas Dovecot Versions seen this: - 1.0.rc15 (Debian 4.0 Etch) - 1.0.0 (Debian backports)

To clarify my question, suppose one has email organised in server X as described above, in directories ~/Maildir/Family/[cur.new.tmp/ , etc. And now suppose one wants to access this email from laptop Y. How exactly does one have to change the setup on machine X? And what does one set mail_location to? It seems to me that this is an issue likely to be faced by anyone wanting to run a small home network. reading email on various machines, and wanting this email to be kept "in sync". Maybe dovecot is not a suitable program for this purpose?

Wow! I'm running 1.1 Beta 1 on OpenSuSE linux 10.2. It seems not bad at all. The only thing I've not quite well understood is this message, that pops up when I start dovecot: Warning: fd limit 1024 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load (more than 1536). Either grow the limit or change login_max_processes_count and max_mail_processes settings Where does dovecot take this 1024 fd limit? My machine-wise limit is some orders of magnitude bigger, af far as I can tell by reading /proc/sys/fs/file-max... luciano. -- /"\ /Via A. [Dovecot] Deliver, sendmail & envelope From_

Sorry, couldn't find this in the archives. Under freebsd 4.x, the native mail.local that sendmail uses by default writes From_ lines that include the origin address. This is very readily parsable and handy for quick greps in mboxes. But deliver defaults it to MAILER-DAEMON. I see you can specify the envelope From_ with "-f", but I'm not sure how that's useful. Also I'm trying to figure out the instructions for making deliver the default delivery program under sendmail. This is a very plain vanilla setup I have here, procmail is not configured into sendmail.cf so I'm not sure how to adapt the instructions at wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sendmail Any help would be much appreciated. I've appended my local mailer stuff below. Should I just substitute deliver's path for mail.local? By the way, dovecot is very slick! It should speed up my mail server by a huge factor. [Dovecot] Unknown dict module: db

Using dovecot-1.1beta1 I get "Unknown dict module: db" when starting up dovecot. In dovecot.conf I've got the "expire_dict = db:/var/lib/dovecot/expire.db" statement in the plugin{} section. Aparently required when the "expire" plugin is enabled. dovecot is built with "--with-db" and db-devel is present at compile time. Any ideas anyone? Cheers /Lars

deliver appears to copy "^From " header lines from stdin when delivering to Maildir. The header filtering in mbox-save.c prevents this when delivering to an mbox and instead a synthesized "^From " header is written. This is an issue when using, for example, Postfix and mailbox_command = /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver which does not appear to have an option not to write a "^From " header on the mailbox_command input. I'm attaching a patch that adds a save_header_callback() along the same lines as in mbox-save.c but I'm really not sure this is the right way to do it.

I configured Dovecot according to the instructions at http://www.dovecot.org/bugreport.html and core dumps generally work on my system, eg. [Dovecot] What is your dovecot setup?

I'd be really grateful if someone running a dovecot IMAP (or IMAPS) server could tell me exactly how their email folders are arranged. What is the mail_location setting in /etc/dovecot.conf ? What are the directories (or some of them) containing mail messages? Does the client see an inbox folder? If so, what directory on the server contains these email messages?

I think I've found the source of a bug which I first saw when running dovecot and pine (or alpine), which I finally tracked down by doing a protocol trace. In the IMAP session, the SEARCH command appears to have a problem with sets of messages and/or the NOT operator. Probably the best way to show this is by doing operations on a folder with ten messages in it. a select ten * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft \*)] Flags permitted. * 10 EXISTS * 0 RECENT * OK [UNSEEN 1] First unseen. * OK [UIDVALIDITY 1190450101] UIDs valid * OK [UIDNEXT 11] Predicted next UID a OK [READ-WRITE] Select completed. Now, start doing some basic searches using message sets: b search (1:10) * SEARCH 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 b OK Search completed. OK, so far so good. [Dovecot] dovecot with virtual and local users?

Hello, I googled for a while in order to find a solution to make dovecot work with local and virtual users. My Mailserver setup looks like the following: virtual users are stored in a mysql database, and having their Mailbox here: /srv/mail/$domain/$uid/ Local users have a Maildir folder in their home directory. The only point i found in the web concerning this issue is this post here: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-November/017478.html but I failed to understand the user_query. [Dovecot] kmail + IMAPS

I have dovecot IMAPS + kmail working perfectly on two laptops - I'm using one now - but I just tried starting it on a third laptop, and cannot get it running; kmail on the third laptop just waits indefinitely, saying "Retrieving Folder Contents Please wait ...". All 3 laptops are running Fedora 7, with more or less the same packages, all updated. (1) I suspect the problem lies with authentication. But how can I test this? Running "telnet <server> 993" gets the same response on all 3 laptops: [tim@elizabeth ~]$ telnet www.*.com 993 Trying 86.*.*.228... Connected to www.*.com. Escape character is '^]'. with no further response until I press ^]. I looked at <http://wiki.dovecot.org/TestInstallation> but this seems only to apply to IMAP on port 143. (2) kmail has an option to "Check What the Server Supports" under the Security tag, but pressing this just returns without any message, leaving whatever settings as they are. (On the laptops where kmail is working as an IMAPS client, the settings are changed to "Use TLS ..." and "Clear text".) I realise this is probably a kmail question, but shouldn't clicking on this option return some warning if it does not work? (3) I guess I don't understand exactly how TLS authentication works. Does installing openssl set up the correct certificates on server and client? Is there any documentation on this? Any suggestions or enlightenment gratefully received.

Hello, I'm using dovecot 1.0.3 and Dovecot Sieve plugin 1.0.2. Sieve script works fine with normal addresses, like user@domain.., and messages marked with "X-Spam-Flag: YES" are delivered directly to INBOX.Spam. To make deliver understand recipient_delimiter I tried two methods, the first one as per wiki (tweaking postfix master.cf), and the second one by tweaking dovecot-sql.conf (the main idea is to use concat(substring_index('%n',"+',1),'@','%d') for the username). Both methods work good. [Dovecot] IDLE with inotify problem

Hi, I recently switched from courier imap to dovecot. With courier I had a working IDLE setup that informed me immediately when new mail arrived. With Dovecot it is different, sometimes i get an immediate result but most of the time it takes a rather long time for the notification to return to the client. For testing purposes I set mailbox_idle_check_interval = 1 and i now get the same behaviour as with couier (a new mail immediately causes a notification) but i am not sure that this is the right solution. Reading the comments in the config files I was under the impression that this is not needed if dovecot uses inotify. Setup: Kernel 2.6.22.1 with inotify dovecot 1.0.3 from debian unstable Build options: ioloop=epoll notify=inotify ipv6 openssl So my question is can I check that dovecot is actually using inotify? Hello, there are problems with quota dict when multiple dovecot deliver processes are launched in parallel. It can be reproduced by sending a mail with multiple different recipients - the mail is delivered OK to all recipients, but the quota are not updated correctly in sql. I looked at the code and it seems that the problem is somewhere in dict cache. [Dovecot] Feature Request for Proxy

Hi, Quick feature request for the proxy function: I have a couple of machines which are all customer facing and customer mailbox lives on any one of them. Customer can login to any machine and the proxy feature then forwards them to the correct machine (often the machine they are already connected to). However, right now if the SQL query simply returns the IP of the correct machine, and this happens to be the same machine that the connection is already on, then we get the auth process stuck in an infinite loop (and generating a lot of log files...) The quick fix is to customise each installation and add some kind of WHERE clause to change the results IF result is already the same as the machine we are on. However, this is error prone when setting up new machines and it's easy to forget or make a typo adjusting the config files. In my case I am using vservers and it's quite neat to be able to simply copy the whole image and fire it up on a new IP to test an upgrade, etc, hence easy to mess up adjusting the conf files when creating a new image. Any suggestions on how this could be done more dynamically, or else could I raise a feature request that the auth process somehow realises when it's being forwarded to an IP address that it's actually listening on already already (ie it's a request which loops back to itself), thus simplifying the config files? I haven't cracked open the code, but it sounds somewhat possible to check the list of IP addresses we are currently listening on and check that the proxy dest isn't among them? Cheers Ed W

I'd like to flag a problem we are observing that looks like it is caused by the listescape-plugin.c. I realize that this plugin is not part of the standard Dovecot 1.0 distribution but I would appreciate any insights or suggestions for fixes that anyone is kind enough to offer. The problem concerns subfolder renames when used in conjunction with Maildir folders (I've not tested this against any other folder type). The 06 list response in the listescape case is not unexpected given the nature of the failure. My initial reading of rename_subfolders() from maildir-storage.c suggests that the calls through maildir_mailbox_list_init() and maildir_mailbox_list_next() are returning "external" style names (i.e. ones that present "/" as the hierarchy separator) to rename_subfolders(), which is an "internal" helper function. This is supported by the logged error message. I am afraid I am yet to get my head around the actual code path and the escaping and unescaping that is going on so am not able to suggest a fix as yet.

[Dovecot] Multiple SSL certs

I am trying to find a way to have the SSL cert used by Dovecot be dependent on the local IP address. So far the only ways I have found is to either have two different instances running (annoying because I would need to argue with the init scripts a lot) or use the old, undocumented server{} sections. Is the latter an acceptable way to do this, or is there something better? --Noah Kantrowitz

Deliver from latest 1.1 HG with sieve also from latest 1.1 HG is dying with an assertion failure when it delivers to my mailbox. Other mailboxes on the same system are unaffected, but I can read my mailbox fine through IMAP. Currently dbox works properly only in one-message-per-file mode. I'm not actually even sure how good idea it would be to use it with multiple-messages-per-file mode. But I guess it won't hurt to finish its implementation and see. :) As you can see I haven't been replying much to the mailing list lately. My school started again, which meant that I had to start sleeping again at night instead of at day :) Doing that always takes a few weeks of feeling too tired to get much of anything done. Hopefully that goes away soon. A bit more about dbox: Originally I had thought that it'd be good to have multiple messages per file. The bad thing about that is that it works badly without fcntl locks, which don't work all that great with NFS. So I changed my plans a bit so that dbox also supports one-message-per-file behavior where it doesn't need locking much. (Multiple-messages-per-file is still supported by the format, but currently the code is not fully working.) dbox files begin with a header, then they have the message data and at the end of file there's a metadata block. Metadata contains things like message flags, keywords, received date and so on. When a flag/keyword is updated, the change is normally done only to index files. This is why dovecot.index and dovecot.index.log files are important with dbox format, they contain flag changes that haven't been written anywhere else. But since there's still a chance that index files could break (although v1.1 tries harder than v1.0 to fix problems), it would be nice if the flags/keywords were written to metadata block once in a while. So if the index files are lost, flag changes wouldn't be completely lost. Metadata updates of course use disk I/O so they shouldn't be done too often. I was thinking that the metadata could be updated: - if IMAP connection has been idling for 4 hours (not changing flags) - when closing mailbox and there are changes older than 4h - immediately if there are changes older than 24h (whenever mailbox is being synced, e.g. SELECT/NOOP/STATUS) Or something like that. Those rules can of course be changed, but I'm not sure if I should bother making them configurable from dovecot.conf. There are already too many settings.

Hello, I'm using postfix(2.4.5) and dovecot(1.0.5), and till now I have been using postfix deliver agent. Hi, I'm not sure if I should be posting this question here or on the Postfix mailing list, but I'll start here. When using Dovecot SASL with Postfix, is there a way to return a login-failed reason in the SMTP AUTH dialog using "nologin", similar to the way it can be done with Dovecot IMAP and POP? Details: I have a Dovecot authentication-only daemon working with a Postfix server doing SMTP AUTH. The Dovecot configuration uses a MySQL driver to get the password information, and one of the fields in the database is "access". In my SQL query, I return a row only if "access" is non-zero. This all works -- I can shut down an account from accessing mail while retaining the user's original password. password_query = SELECT username AS user, password FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' AND access != 0 Now, in my Dovecot IMAP and POP server configuration, I'm using "access" in a similar way, except that instead of not returning a row when "access" is zero, I return the "nologin" extra field (along with a "reason" field). The MySQL query for this is slightly tricky, but it works: password_query = SELECT username AS user, password, NULLIF(access != 0, 1) AS nologin, 'Access not allowed for this account' AS reason FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' While this second query works correctly with IMAP and POP authentication, it does not work with Postfix SMTP AUTH. Assuming the password is correct, the user is authenticated even when "access" is zero. It seems that either Postfix and/or dovecot-auth (I'm not sure which) is ignoring the "nologin" field in this case. In addition, when using the first SQL query, nothing is returned as a reason following Postfix's message. For example: AUTH PLAIN (correct password) 535 5.7.0 Error: authentication failed: <-- no reason returned here I'd like to return a reason here in the (optimistic :) hope that this will be shown to the user by the email client when an account is shut off. Here's an example of it working correctly with IMAP with an account that is shut off: 001 LOGIN user (correct password) 001 NO Access not allowed for this account

Hello, I'm using dovecot-1.0.5 with postfix. There is a problem which dovecot folder's size calculating wrong. It doesn't calculates whole folders' sum. Only maildirsize file keeps the first requested folder's size (in this example, Inbox). The example shows Inbox's size, another folder's size didn't add although connecting with IMAP. As the effect, I can not manage users' quota. Is there any hint with using namespace. Hello, I'm using dovecot-1.0.5 with postfix. I have to use deliver from procmail because I have some filters. There is no document about how to using deliver parameters (-d) other than http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA . If I set -d parameters manually as a username everything is ok. I can not set users' mail quota (don't lookup) with mysql db if I haven't set -d parameter as receipt username in procmail. How can I describe user (-d) parameter's variable in procmail? [Dovecot] Assertion failure in mail-index-view-sync.c

I have been getting these assertion failures every couple days, killing the IMAP process. After it happens, I can login immediately and everything is fine until it happens again. Hi, I just upgraded to version 1.0.5 hoping to get rid of a problem that made Thunderbird download all mails from time to time. I now see this error (below). Does anyone know what it means? I was playing around with dovecot-1.1 and maildir++ quotas, and ran into a reproducible error with indexing. This only seems to be a problem for new maildirs. If I send a message without the quota plugin on, and "seed" the index/control files, future deliveries with the quota plugin seem to succeed without errors. Hi everyone. I can't get mail.app to report back correct quota information using mail.app and dovecot (though it works with courier-imap). I am looking at migrating away from courier-imap to dovecot but this issue is something I need to have resolved <somehow>. Thunderbird is fine and reports back good info on either connection. Is there a way, using Dovecot and Postfix, to use SASL from a remote server? Since it appears the communication uses Unix sockets, does this mean it is restricted to local services only? I have a two-server configuration, where my firewall also runs the mail gateway/filter (Postfix + ASSP). My internal server has Postfix + Dovecot. Right now I have my internal server configured to use Dovecot SASL, but the external server is still using the Courier authdaemon against the LDAP database. -- Daniel

Hi, I'm trying to execute a script when a mail arrives in a given user's mailbox. Something like .dovecot.sieve. The reason I'm not using sieve itself is that I need to do stuff on mail arrival, which is beyond sieve's features. So is there a way to tell dovecot to run a script when a mail arrives in a certain mailbox? Optionally a solution to forward the whole mail to a script would be good too. -- Dennis Becker

Any chance that multiple "ignore=" statements cab be specified for a quota in Dovecot 1.0.x? We know this is possible in 1.1, but won't be able to update until it's stable. We've tried: quota = maildir:storage=256000:ignore=Junk:ignore=Trash and quota = maildir:storage=256000:ignore=Junk,Trash However, only "Junk" is ignored, and email can't be deleted when the mailbox is full. Since almost all of the mailboxes are situated on the same filesystem, the mail is delivered by just saving it once and establishing hardlinks from the mail directories of all the other recipients to this one mail. We're using Dovecot 1.0.3, and I'm setting up some shared IMAP folders. The eventual goal is to do the standard "learn as spam" / "learn as ham" type of setup, with some cron jobs to do the message extractions. But there's one minor twist: the "learn as ham" folder will need to be write-only for users. (I'll either create a fake user with read access to extract the mail for sa-learn, or do some local filesystem access, etc. A problem for a future day.) The issue is that some of the mail being misclassified might contain sensitive information. So users should be able to copy messages into that folder, but not list or read other messages. (Yes, they will be removed from the folder by the future sa-learn script, don't worry.) When a mailbox has abt 40 mails with 4-5 mb attachments , it is quite common for the pop3 connection to get timed out or disconnected esp. if user has dialup modem. In this case , dovecot seems to REALLY HIT the user hard. Because it simply DOES NOT delete mails , even if user requested so. It only deletes the mails if users succesfully logs out. No other pop3 server has this problem so i would request this bugs is fixed ASAP. Effect of this bug - user has to retry multiple times and download multiple copies of mail before it finally deleted. Hi all, I'm working on a replacement for a legacy linux mail server: courier POP/IMAP, Postfix, OpenLDAP. One of the requirements of the new mail server is to authenticate against our AD infrastructure (I'll still keep a userdb in OpenLDAP). SSO is not required since most of the clients don't log into our domain. The current system has about 1,000 concurrent users on it during the day (almost all are IMAP users). Inbox size varies but is generally very high 1GB+. I'm considering dovecot as a replacement for courier IMAP on the new server mainly for performance reasons. Cyrus was also considered but I'd rather work with maildir format inboxes. I'm in the process of installing a "proof of concept" server with CentOS 5 and dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5. the production system will most likely run on RHEL Question: What's the best way (most reliable/fastest) to authenticate dovecot to AD? If someone is doing this in a production environment can you offer any hints on configuration for performance or what to expect in general? Thanks, chrisj

[Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0.3: mbox problems for newly created users

Hi, I am having problems with Dovecot 1.0.3 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 when using a new user account without any mbox files present. Directory /home/$user/.imap_mail/ does not exist when Thunderbird first tries to login using IMAP to the account. On login this directory is created with a zero byte Trash file and .subscriptions containing string "Trash", so far, so good. Now I create a new message in Thunderbird and save it as draft. A zero byte file "Drafts" is created in /home/$user/.imap_mail/ but the message I wanted to save got _lost_, /home/$user/.imap_mail/Drafts stays at zero bytes. The next message I try to save as draft finds its way to the Drafts mbox however. Please note that no /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox has been created although a inbox is shown in Thunderbird. When I move the saved message from Drafts to the inbox folder shown in Thunderbird, it gets saved in /var/mail/$user instead of /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox, I guess this is due to the use of the mbox_snarf plugin, right? /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox is the maildrop for Exim, which handles incoming mails, but in this scenario the user did not receive any emails yet. If I manually create /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox, then moving a message from Drafts to the Thunderbird-displayed inbox works. How to fix this problem? Especially messages getting lost is really bad because I am in the process of changing our mail server setup from Exim/UW-Imapd to Exim/Dovecot, where I have to move 100+ /var/mail/$user mbox files to /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox. But when Dovecot can not properly save files to previous non-existing mbox files, like Drafts, this is really a problem. [Dovecot] IP based virtual users: stripping login domain?

Hello. I have a likely unusual request regarding IP based virtual dovecot users. When you specify a passdb passwd-file name containing "%d", then the domain portion is stripped from the login username, before the user is checked in the passwd-file. However, if you specify a passwd-file name containing "%l" (the local IP), the domain portion of the login is not stripped off before the username is checked in the passwd-file. This behavior makes sense, and should be considered the right and proper thing to do. But in this case, I want to do something different anyway. In the setup I'm working on, most logins will use domain based virtual usernames. However, if a customer logs in with an unknown domain in their login username, I'd like to fall back to IP-based virtualization, based on the local IP they connect to. I can't use auth_username_format to strip off %d, because that would break the domain based virtualization. What I need is an option to make %l work the way %d already works; or a format inside a passwd-file which allows for partial matches in the "username" column. If I can do this directly using a passwd-file, I'd like to do that. It seems like it'd be easy if I were using an SQL back end, but that's not an option. It's possible with an external authentication script, but I want to explore more direct configuration options, first. Does anyone have any recommendations? If what I want can't already be done, and I patched dovecot to do one of these things, how likely would it be to have that patch merged into the project? Hello, I am trying to migrate our configuration that use Courier-imap to dovecot, appart some users that have some issues with pop and leave messages on servers that retreive all mails into their mailboes... but this is ok for me :).. One problem that it seems that Sent / Drafts and Trash folder are not automaticaly added as subscribed folder... I also finally did some larger API changes and code cleanups that I had been planning on doing for a long time. I also changed copyright notices in the code to: /* Copyright (c) xxxx-2007 Dovecot authors, see the included COPYING file */ So my name isn't there anymore. It wasn't always correct anyway. I'm planning on updating the -2007 year at the beginning of each year to all the files. It's annoying to try to keep it updated manually.

Hi, I have an RHEL4 machine running dovecot-1.0.3 + postfix-2.3.2 + postfixadmin + mysql-4.1.20-2.RHEL4.1 + amavisd-new-2.5.2-1. The machine only has a gig of memory in it, I am trying to keep it running until I get new hardware to replace it in a couple of weeks. For the most part it works as advertised but every once in a while it stops talking to the auth server. I think I have tracked this to periods of high auth requests. I just transferred the files in my home directory from an x86_64 machine to an i686 machine. This included the .dovecot.sieve and .dovecot.sievec files in my home root, and the Dovecot index files in my ~/Maildir directory. Everything seemed to be working until I tried sending an email that triggers a Sieve "redirect" command, then I got the following in the logs. I then tried the same dovecot.sieve file using a separate account which has always been on the i686 machine (and the index files have always been written there too), and the Sieve "redirect" worked fine. I was hoping some one might be able to offer me some advice on a little problem I have. I am looking to A. move from mbox to maildir B. looking to move from tpop to dovecot to bring both pop and imap under the same program. anyways the problem I am having is this tpop3d mbox uses MD5 sum of the mailbox headers in hex which is option %m in the uidl section but the problem is when dovecot convert plugin runs and makes in a maildir it fails to find the md5 of this because it is only used for mboxs. if I change this from %m to %Mf it downloads every message on the clients computer which is not desirable. Instead fsck is run which preserves as much of the original index as possible. This is important with dbox at least since index files are the only place where the latest flag/keyword changes are. Recent alphas were also modifying process's fd limits. The current behavior is: - If current fd limit is less than login_max_processes_count (imap +pop3) + max_mail_processes, log a warning at startup: "fd limit 1024 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load (more than 1234). Either grow the limit or change login_max_processes_count and max_mail_processes settings" - Since 1024 is a common default limit, I dropped max_mail_processes default to 512. - Login processes drop their fd limit to the maximum number of fds needed, plus a few more just in case.

[Dovecot] Proxy problems with 1.0.5 !

Hi I am trying to do a staged migration over to dovecot, but having troubles at the first hurdle. I setup the proxy feature to redirect most of our users back to the current Courier imap/pop server, and it's partly working, but I'm getting some serious errors using Thunderbird and IMAP. Now, I had expected the proxying to be fairly transparent and basically just dovecot doing an auth and then passing the stream on to the other server? My problem is that using Thunderbird I can read all my folders OK, but I can't save anything in my Sent Items or Drafts folders... Basically I get errors every time I try and send an email, or try to save to the draft folder. Curiously, directly browsing into those folders works fine, as does deleting emails, and apparently copying them works fine also... Why is the saving of sent messages failing...? The setup is basically taking a working Thunderbird install, changing the server name from pointing at the Courier server to point at the dovecot server - dovecot in turn is told to proxy back to the original server. All I'm getting from Thunderbird is an "Invalid Command" response. Is there an easy way to get a look inside the imap stream to try and see what's failing? Any suggestions on why this is happening at all? One idea is that I have setup completely different namespaces in Dovecot, (with a hidden namespace which should be courier compatible), but I wouldn't have expected this to affect the Proxy stuff at all?! [Dovecot] auth_default_realm for different listeners

We provide POP3 service for several realms, each of which has a substantial number of users logging in with no realm (bare username). We would like to use Dovecot, but I haven't been able to findout how to vary auth_default_realm for each listener. My most recent attempt was to set up one auth {} block for each realm with a different auth_default_realm and socket master path. I then set up one protocol pop3 {} block for each realm, listening on different IP addresses and with a auth_socket_path corresponding to the auth block for that listener. I'm not sure if I'm on the right track here, but I'm seeing two problems: 1. Hi! I am currently testing a setup with dovecot's lda, the cmusieve plugin, pysieved and the avelsieve plugin for squirrelmail. The issue I am stumbling upon is that avelsieve is generating folder names including the namespace prefix when creating "fileinto" rules. E.g.: A rule: If the header "Precedence" contains "bulk", then file it into the folder INBOX.bulk. Also keep a copy in INBOX, marked as deleted. translates into sieve: require ["fileinto","reject","vacation","imapflags","relational","comparator-i;ascii-numeric","regex","notify"]; if header :contains "Precedence" "bulk" { fileinto "INBOX.bulk"; addflag "\\Deleted"; keep; } But what happens when a matching email is delivered is that a new mailbox ".INBOX.bulk" in the user's Maildir is created. I.e. the email is not delivered to ~/.Maildir/.bulk as intended, but into ~/.Maildir/.INBOX.bulk, creating the new folder on the fly. The same happens when trying to fileinto folders from other namespaces. It seems that either avelsieve is generating "too much" and should remove the prefix (at least for INBOX) or dovecot's deliver is not able to use the namespaces definition in dovecot.conf correctly when interpreting sieve's fileinto directive. Did I miss something? [Dovecot] gssapi, kerberos and webmail

Hi every one, first thanks for the great job, I switched successfully from courier imap a few months ago and both the migration and maintenance went smoothly from then on. The reason I switched was gssapi support (and the easier debug) and now I have thunderbird on Linux connecting in an SSO fashion through kerberos/GSSAPI (works great). Users should be able to access their mail throught a webmail too (eg. eGroupware). I have already checked for kerberos authentication on Apache, however there seems to be no way to have ticket forwarding throught PHP. AFIAK there is thus no way to use kerberos for php-imap --> dovecot authentication. The only information available seems to be the username. So here is my question : how do people on this mailing list handle kerberos authentication with webmail? Do you use other kind of authentication on privileged port (ie with access only from apache) and just do a login/nopassword authentication (like an uid base authentication through ldapi:/// on an ldap directory for example) ? Hello, I am trying to move from Courier-imap to dovecot.... Even if the processes to move logical (eg name spaces etc...) went very and without any problem, I've some etrange behavior when Imap client is Mac OS X Mail.app. I've got a big mailbox that have about 3 / 4G of mail in several folder (lots !!!)... After a long time, the OS X client say error : "Too Many opened files". I have check on the servers (a FreeBSD farm of 3 servers using freebsd ports of dovecot)... And nothing special... A question : why do I have never this kind of message on courier imap and why do I get this on dovecot... ? Configuration file on demand... if needed... THanks, /Xavier

I have dovecot 1.0.5 installed on an OpenBSD 4.1 box and an OS X Server 10.4.10 box. Sure you've all heard it before, because of the pipe error, no more login processes can be launched, and I have to restart the server. dovecot: Sep 13 05:50:00 Error: pipe() failed: Too many open files I first thought this was the issue with kqueue, but I've since recompiled making sure to use poll. This also happened with 1.0.3 and 1.0.2. It also happens very specifically after a dictionary attack that lasts usually about an hour, unless I can catch it earlier. (Around 18,000 login attempts) ex: dovecot: Sep 13 05:49:58 Info: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<aaron>, method=PLAIN, rip=62.161.41.32, lip=<local ip> dovecot: Sep 13 05:49:58 Info: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<adm>, method=PLAIN, rip=62.161.41.32, lip=<local ip> dovecot: Sep 13 05:49:58 Info: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<account>, method=PLAIN, rip=62.161.41.32, lip=<local ip> But after the attack has subsided for a period of time, I still have the number of file descriptors maxed out for the dovecot process. I've increased the number available to have a higher roof, but that doesn't fix the problem. Wondering if anyone else has seen this issue, and also in a generic problem. How are others dealing the the problem of being attacked in this method? Is there a max number of login tries for a given ip address within a period of time that I'm missing? :) Thanks, Patrick

[Dovecot] dirsize quota assertion problem

Our current virtual mailbox configuration is not compatible with one of the assertions in the dovecot quota plugin's assertions in quota-dirsize.c. I believe the assertion is incorrect, but I would also be happy if I could get the same result with a better configuration setting. Here is a sample passdb entry which causes the quota assertion to fail: test(a)example.com:<snip>:3007:1000::/usr/boxes/username/example.com::userdb_mail=mbox:~/test^/.imap:INBOX=~/test userdb_uid=3007 userdb_gid=1000 userdb_home=/usr/boxes/username/example.com userdb_quota=dirsize:storage=100 The imap folder is "~/test^/.imap" and the INBOX is "~/test". As you can see, these are in different locations, but the INBOX string happens to be a substring of the imap folder directory. An example of the failed assertion error: Aug 31 16:44:13 www2 dovecot: IMAP(test(a)example.com): file quota-dirsize.c: line 180 (quota_count_path_add): assertion failed: (!is_file) This particular error log line was generated by dovecot 1.0.3, but the code in quota-dirsize.c is the same in dovecot 1.1 alpha3's version of quota-dirsize.c: 131 if (strncmp(count_path[i].path, path, strlen(path)) == 0) { 132 /* the new path contains the existing path */ 133 i_assert(!is_file); 134 count_path += i; 135 break; 136 } First, quota_count_path_add() is called for directory "~/test^/.imap" and it succeeds. When it is subsequently called for file "~/test": - the strncmp matches because "~/test" is a substring of "~/test^/.imap" - the assertion fails because "~/test" is a file and not a directory It seems to me that instead of asserting !is_file, it would be better to simply skip the conditional in that case, since a path variable that is a file should never be tested to see whether it contains an existing path. if (!is_file && strncmp(count_path[i].path, path, strlen(path)) == 0) { /* the new path contains the existing path */ count_path += i; break; } But this also has a bug: if path is a directory which substring matches count_path[i].path, but the same path with a directory separator appended to it does not substring match count_path[i].path, then it is a different path and does not contain the existing path. For example, if count_path[i] is the directory /usr/home/test/mailbox_folders, and path is the directory /usr/home/test/mailbox, then /usr/home/test/mailbox does not contain/usr/home/test/mailbox_folders, and this condition should fail. If some other code were to enforce that /usr/home/test/mailbox be terminated with a directory separator, then this is not a problem and my patch should work. I hope this makes sense. Hi, I'm running FreeBSD, Dovecot, Postfix (virtual users), MySQL, Squirrelmail. I have installed squirrelmail-quota_usage-plugin, but I cannot make it work. It mentions "If you have an IMAP server with QUOTA Extension capability...". In dovecot.conf I have enabled "mail_plugins = quota" near protocol pop3 and protocol lda, near protocol imap I have "mail_plugins = quota imap_quota". Near " plugin { ..." I have "quota = maildir:storage=204800". I think that the problem of why I don't see quota in Squirrelmail is in file dovecot-sql near user_query. I have my users mailboxes in such format: /usr/local/virtual/domain.tld/username and my user_query looks like this: user_query = SELECT maildir, 125 AS uid, 125 AS gid, concat('maildir:storage=', quota) AS quota FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' AND active = '1', I think that in my user_query I'm missing something. I do not get any errors in the dovecot and dovecot-debug logs, everything works fine, but I still can't see quota.

Dovecot v1.1.alpha4 imap after some time stops responding. It can not be restarted as /etc/init.d/dovecot restart killall imap also does not help killall -9 imap and then restart does help in log I see message (repeted periodically) that Sep 12 09:50:02 localhost postfix/local[22533]: C7057753B6: to=<username@domain> , relay=local, delay=5195, delays=5156/0.01/0/39, dsn=4.2.0, status=deferr ed (cannot update mailbox /home/username/Mailbox for user username. unable to lo ck for exclusive access: Resource temporarily unavailable) lsof -n shows that the file is is open by imap process.

[Dovecot] Datehandling bug?

Hi, I am testing dovecot 1.0.3 alongside my existing courier installation and a number of my emails are heading to the top of the inbox even though they are rather old. Closer inspection shows that my mailclient (Thunderbird on Win32) is showing me some screwey dates for a number of messages. One example is an email which says: Date: 2007-08-21 11:42:43 But in TB I see the date shown as only: 03:27 ie just a time and no date OK, the date above is clearly not an RFC date, but any idea why this is showing up only under Dovecot? Is it a dovecot date handling issue? Cheers Ed W

Hi all Does the list work? I have sent two mail without answer up today. I want to change Courrier-imap by dovecot but i have problems with quota and sieve in dovecot. would you help validating dovecot? I this does not work i would have to stay with courier-imap. [Dovecot] postfix + dspam + dovecot problem

Hi All, I'm new to dovecot (coming from cyrus) and have a bit of a problem setting up postfix + dspam + dovecot. 1. postfix + dovecot: works like a charm. Using "mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver" in postfix main.cf 2. adding dspam to the equation: unable to deliver: net_connect(/usr/var/run/dovecot/auth-master) failed: No such file or directory Using "mailbox_transport = lmtp:unix:/var/tmp/dspam.sock" in postfix main.cf (instead of the above mailbox_command), and the corresponding setting in master.cf. In /etc/dspam.conf I'm using... What throws me is that the delivery works as expected in case 1) but not in case 2), despite the fact I'm using the same delivery agent, i.e. /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver. Why would dovecot go for some other authentication method in case 2)? BTW, we're using PAM on top of LDAP. Any ideas appreciated. Cheers /Lars

In order to preserve anonymity of the users I setup the mailbox as follows: drwxr-xr-t 5 root fb 4096 2007-09-05 16:18 ./ drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2007-09-05 16:16 ../ drwx-wx-wt 2 spamd fb 12288 2007-09-10 16:17 cur/ hence, with read permission for the spam bot only. When Thunderbird copies mails from the same mail account into the folder, it seems like it tries to select the mail box afterwards, then a "Internal error occured. Refer to server log for more information." because of permission denied. When one copies mail from yet another account into the SPAM box, no such message appears. I guess, Thunderbird does not try the refresh the message count. Well, is there a possiblity to setup a Write-Only mailbox, with Dovecot v1.0.3 with the ACL plugin? Is there a working setup for write-only mailboxes with the ACL plugin? Hello, Can this be done? configurable number of days? Like to move from courier, but this is the only thing we really need to convince us to change, it is no good telling users to periodically delete trash, they never listen :) Quey
