Hi All, While copying 9360 messages from a local folder to a folder on the imap server at message 5792 the client shows the following message from server: "Invalid internal data." The error is reproducible. Any suggestions? [Dovecot] (slightly OT) syncing / migrating IMAP mailboxes

Hi! I fear this may be slightly off-topic but it's both related to IMAP and to dovecot: Is there any good and in paticular realiable program for synching / migrating one IMAP mailbox to another? The most important features for me is that a) no mails are lost / left out silently and b) the porgram is able to sync the complete mailbox including all folders without just giving up in the middle of the transfer. If it's somehow possible, I'd like to migrate directly from one IMAP account to the other, without running the synchronizer on one of the servers and without accessing one of the Maildirs directly. I simply want to migrate my existing IMAP account from one Dovecot server (running 1.0beta5) to a new one (running 1.0rc15, as that's the version in Debian stable). Actually, a large part of the mailbox including most / all folders is already present on both servers, but I recently noticed that a few thousand mails are still missing. The current mailbox state is the result of two earlier (obviously incomplete :-( ) migrations a few months ago, from the original Dovecot 1.0beta5 server to a Cyrus server, and - shortly thereafter - from there on to the currently used Dovecot 1.0rc15. So far I've tried offlineimap, imapsync and mailsync, none of which seems to be really usuable. :-( The current state with the incomplete mailbox was caused by mailsync. When I did the first two migrations, mailsync looked like the only program which worked, but seems to have "forgotten" the missing messages. Another extremely suspicious thing is that mailsync reports "phantom changes" if run again immediately after synching a folder and will start to delete and copy / "sync" dozends of messages even if none of the folders actually changed after synching. I've read the name "imapsync" on this list several times, but I just tried it and just tried version 1.219. It happily starts synching the mailboxes and copying messages, but stops after partially synching the first folder - it simply exists, leaving no informational or error message whatsoever... Restarting imapsync will not help, it will appear to start synching the first folder again, but silently exit without doing anything. Some of you seem to use imapsync as a migration tool for production systems, how do you cope with these situations and how do you ensure a mailboxs' migration actually completed successfully? As you're probably not playing Roulette with your customers' or companie's eMails, I'm interested in your receipts to successfully use imapsync myself. As the third application I tried offlineimap (4.0.x-branch). During the migration a few months ago offlineimap (4.0.16 IIRC, synching from a Maildir to a remote IMAP account) was unusuable as it continuously and reproducibly threw exceptions at me during syncing obviously caused by specific messages in the accounts. Unfortunately, I wasn't able ti get any successful help on the offlineimap mailing list this time. :-( Now, synching from one IMAP account to another, specifiying the new server as the "local" account, offlineimap did not throw exceptions caused by mail messages so far, but it's performance is unusuable. It seems to use the "local" IMAP account on my target sevrer in a way which causes Dovecot to utilize all CPU power, copying one message every 10 to 20 seconds - this way, a sync would take ages and frequently aborts because of connection problems. The target server is an Athlon64 3700+ machine... So, does anyone have any pratical solution on how to migrate one IMAP mailbox to another? [Dovecot] Some customers receiving duplicate e-mails

Hi all, I posted this question in the Postfix users mailing list as well - I'm not sure if this is Dovecot or Postfix related. Our old system which we migrated off of was an AIX 5.2 machine running most recent Postfix and mbox format with UW-IMAP. We've migrated to most recent Postfix, using Maildir and Dovecot v1. After we used mb2md to migrate over all our customers, some of our customers have called in to let us know they are receiving duplicate e-mails. It's not happening to everyone, it's random (well, I'm sure it's not really random, I haven't found the issue yet). I don't even know where to start. I looked at the logs, but everything looks fine. How can I troubleshoot something like this? Have any of you experienced the same issue? Thanks in advance.

Hello dovecot users, I have updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to fix a recently reported problem. This is a patch against the latest stable release 1.0.3. It currently won't compile with 1.1 due to significant changes in the master code. Change Log V7 ------------- - Robin Breathe indicated that the regex capability was missing in the server's SIEVE listing. It turns out I forgot to make arrangements for setting ENABLE_REGEX in the cmu libsieve sources, so the regex extension was not compiled in. I copied the configure.in section regarding ENABLE_REGEX from dovecot-sieve-1.0.2 and that fixed the problem. This patch still includes (yet another) instance of the CMU Sieve source, as explained in one of my previous e-mails (http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-July/015016.html) The patch can be downloaded at: http://sinas.rename-it.nl/~sirius/dovecot-1.0.3-MANAGESIEVE-v7.diff.gz The README.managesieve is located in the root of the dovecot source tree after applying the patch. [Dovecot] Restoring a deleted/moved imap folder

Hi, one user of my imap server just deleted a whole folder, blame thunderbird I have the server disk and running Stellar Info for deleted files recovery. My cuestion is about how dovecot deleted an imap Maildir folder? The imap client is configured to move the deleted mails to the Trash folder, so I think dovecot would delete every Maildir email after successfully moved it. In the case a folder is deleted, is something special dovecot does to the email? Or it just run the unlink() function? In the case of compacting a folder, I think thats just a client side action. [Dovecot] authentication with mysql - problem with table name escaping

Found a problem with dovecot 1.0.3 and mysql authentication I got a problem with escaping of mysql table names. Usually, when a mysql table name has some special character (in my case there is a table beginning with the # character) one has to put into these special quotes --- ` ---; others like ' oder " are not recognized. But dovecot somehow doesn't allow me to do that. After switchting auth_verbose to true I get entries in /var/log/messages stating: Password query failed: Incorrect table name ' ' Regards, XhE

Hi! I'd like to configure dovecot to use only TLS client certificates for authentication. After the user presented a client certificate and that certificate was verified, no password-based authentication should be necessary anymore. Is this currently possible? Trying to do a little (cosmetic) tweak to my configuration and just don't seem to be able to come up with a set of options that works. My POP/IMAP configuration is working just fine in terms of mail retrieval, etc. What I'm seeing in the logs now is... Aug 13 18:15:17 test2 dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<support>, method=PLAIN, rip=10.11.12.12, lip=10.11.12.13 I would prefer (for ease of troubleshooting) to have "user=<support(a)realm.com>" appear in the logs instead, to save having to figure the realm from the IP value. Have played around with various combinations of %u, %n and %d and all I seem to be able to accomplish is break the working part of the config. I'm sure the answer is probably something simple, or some combination I haven't tried... but it's certainly escaping me at the moment. The relevant (I think) part of my config follows. Hi there, I found that with an IMAP command like <unique-leader> STORE 1 +FLAGS (testflag) I can set arbitrary flags on mails through the dovecot IMAP daemon. This rules. Now I wonder, however, how I can remove those flags, which become properties of the folder, really. For instance, after the above, SELECT on the containing folder gives: * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft testflag) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft testflag \*)] Flags permitted. Even if I remove the flag from all messages or even delete all messages in the folder, the flag stays on the folder. Is there an IMAP way of removing flags from a folder? Also, does someone know where I can find specification on what characters are allowed for keywords? RFC 3501 is strangely quiet on this, or I am blind. Hello all, While configuring the latest stable version of Dovecot (1.0.3), I've noticed that "deliver" always uses the quota arguments found in the configuration file, completely ignoring what userdb sends to it through the authentication service. This doesn't happen in the previous version I was used (1.0.rc15, comes with Debian "etch"). After digging a little into the code, I've found that "expand_envs" is being called after "auth_client_put_user_env", thus clobbering the "QUOTA" environment variable. Hello, I have some doubts about max_mail_process option on dovecot.conf. When I set to 3, only 2 clients can be logged in at the same time. when I set it to 2, only 1 clients can be logged in. Why is the maximum number of concurrent clients is always 1 less than max_mail_process? Is any other process is also counted as mail_process other than imap and pop3? Tony

Hi, I'm setting up our new mail system using dovecot as mailbox server. As our goal is to have many many small redundant (virtual) servers as components, for example a mailhub (just relaying mail) and a frontend smtp server (just accepting or denying mail in the first place and then forwarding it to the mailhub), etc. I want to run Dovecot on a different server than the main MTAs. The mailbox server is the only service that cannot be made redundant in an easy way (the servers don't have common storage and we can't add that easily), thus I prefer not to have it on the same server as the relay. Is there a best practice to do that? My current ideas are either to implement a stripped-down Postfix in the Dovecot server or to use some qpsmtpd setup there, both just to call the Dovecot delivery program. SMTP will be the communication protocol for the components except dovecot. (e.g. the virus scanner will be implemented as SMTP proxy). We just started running Dovecot this summer at our campus. Overall things have gone very well, and performance have improved since moving off of U of Wash. We have run into an issue with a user running Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 on Solaris. He is seeing a very long response time (20mins+) on his first mailbox selection each morning when he comes into work. I looked at the Dovecot log, and the only think I can see that might be a bit out of the ordinary is two Disconnected messages that happen about 30 minutes apart each morning: Aug 17 04:54:08 host dovecot: IMAP(uname): Disconnected: Disconnected Aug 17 05:24:09 host dovecot: IMAP(uname): Disconnected: Disconnected The disconnected messages for other users say "Disconnected: Logged Out". I don't know for sure if these messages are related to his problem. Can anyone can shed some light on why Dovecot might indicate a "double disconnect"? [Dovecot] Enabling IMAP namespaces for existing folders

Hi. We're using dovecot 1.0.3 with a very very simple setup; specifically, there are no namespaces defined. Users have been puttering away happily for many months, creating subfolders and whatnot with (almost) zero problems. We'd like to start taking advantage of shared IMAP folders. I've been reading over the dovecot wiki and have only one question that I don't see documented. The docs point out that if we define any namespaces, we must also explicitly define the private previously-default one. My question is: are there any migration or transition steps that must be taken there? Will clients' configuration need to be modified in any way when, e.g., their existing IMAP folders suddenly become part of a private namespace? Thanks for the newbie help. -- Phil Edwards

Hi, i have just migrated from courier-imap to dovecot. im using it with vpopmail, the pop service is working ok but the imap service for imp webmail is not writing the quota information to the maildirsize file, as recommended in the docs, i have this in dovecot.conf : plugin { # Quota plugin. Multiple backends are supported: # dirsize: Find and sum all the files found from mail directory. # Extremely SLOW with Maildir. It'll eat your CPU and disk I/O. # dict: Keep quota stored in dictionary (eg. Hi all, I've read so much information on this that I'm a little confused as to what to follow. Here's what's going on: We just migrated away from our AIX machines which were running Postfix and UW-IMAP. We're now running Postfix with Dovecot. I already converted everyone's mbox file to maildir, but now I'm having a little troubles with how to exactly populate their IMAP folders. People are saying they cannot see their folders. These 'folders' they are talking about can be found in their /home directory. I don't know if I need to incorporate a Dovecot plugin, or if there is a script I can run to do this for me. Since this is a live server, I would prefer to test on a single account before I run a plugin that would effect all users globally. Any help would be very appreciated - thanks in advance! Patrick

Dear all, I'm running a linuxbox with ' Dovecot<->Exim<->horde/IMP<-> Mysql ', this is a very good combination and works excellent for the system users. Now I want to change the configuration and authenticate against the mysql database from horde. That way it is much easy for me to create (virtual) mail users. I also want to use the mail alias of the horde users for Exim and Dovecot. My questions are; is it possible to use the horde mysql database for this? And is it also possible for the mail alias of horde? If this is possible, is there a howto of this configuration? I ask because I need to restore some messages from a backup, but not restore the entire maildir. I tried some the other day as a test, but the user is saying that they didn't appear. Hi, I am using Postfix and Dovecot. I have set up backup_mailbox(a)domain.tld, which gets mail copies from user1(a)domain.tld user2(a)domain.tld user3(a)domain.tld, the copy option is set in postfix recipient_bcc_maps = path_to_file_recipient_bcc. In recipient_bcc file I have: user1(a)domain.tld backup_mailbox(a)domain.tld user2(a)domain.tld backup_mailbox(a)domain.tld user3(a)domain.tld backup_mailbox(a)domain.tld Postfix does the job and copies user1, user2, user3 emails to backup_mailbox. But I also want to filter mails in backup_mailbox and to put user1 mails to USER1 folder in backup_mailbox, user2 mails to USER2 folder in backup_mailbox and so on. How this is possible? I made an entry in subscriptions file of user1, user2, user3. Now I have folders .user1, .user2, user3 in backup_mailbox folder and I can also see these folders through webmail client (squirrelmail), but how do I put email copy which comes from user1(a)domain.tld to backup_mailbox(a)domain.tld to go not to main folder of backup_mailbox but to USER1 folder in backup_mailbox folder. It's then accessed only when and where needed. It probably does access the whole file though. This is because all the cached data for messages are stored next to each others. So now that your client fetches only INTERNALDATE it doesn't really need to read much, but because mmaped pages are read 4kB at a time, it practically reads the whole file. Perhaps this could use some work in future too, so that fields that are accessed together are stored in cache file close together. But then if multiple clients are used, there can be conflicting access patterns, and what's good for one client would be bad for another. Data could also be duplicated to reduce disk reads for different access patterns, but that comes at the cost of disk space..

Hi all, We just set up our new mail servers using Postfix and Dovecot. We have implemented a load balanced solution to where our two mail servers have a common NFS share. Everything is working great. Everything but Dovecot for the most part. In testing, Dovecot was great. Now that we're in the production environment, we've noticed that every 20 minutes, Dovecot will stop running. But it gets even weirder - it appears that Machine A will stop, then 20 mins later after we issue a 'service dovecot restart', Machine B will stop. Then the whole process starts over when we restart Dovecot on Machine B. I can't see anything out of the ordinary in the log files either. I'm at a loss as to what's going on. [Dovecot] Dovecot IDLE bandwidth usage

Hi list, I just recently discovered the IMAP IDLE command and tried it out with my Dovecot server. It seems to work fine and all, but it seems to be using quite a deal of bandwidth, because of the "* OK Still here" messages sent by the server at two minute intervals. I would argue that is a bit of a problem when using the IDLE command for "Push mail" on a mobile phone. I don't know exactly what parts of the packets that mobile carriers collect payment for, but the Ethernet bandwidth consumed by one such message is 149 bytes (83 bytes for the message itself, and 66 bytes for the TCP ACK from the client). At two minute intervals, that becomes over 100 KB per day, and over 3 MB per month. At GRPS rates typical here in Sweden, that becomes about 5-7 USD per month. That might not seem tremendously much, but seeing how it is what takes up the vast majority of the IMAP bandwidth, it is still quite annoying. Are those messages really necessary? I mean, Dovecot still times out after half an hour if the client doesn't "finish" the IDLE command and re-issues it, right? (Coincidentally, I would like to argue that it would be better not to time out at all during an IDLE command and just turn on TCP keepalives instead, but that is the minor issue here) I'll apologize in advance if this is already a tunable option, but I haven't found anything about it in the configuration file. [Dovecot] MANAGESIEVE patch v6 for dovecot 1.0.3

Hello dovecot users, I have updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to (hopefully) fix the compilation issues reported by Robin Breathe. This is a patch against the latest stable release 1.0.3. It currently won't compile with 1.1 due to significant changes in the master code. Change Log V6 ------------- - Corked the client output stream while producing the capability greeting and on other some other occasions as well. Some naive client implementations expect to receive this as a single tcp frame and it is a good practice to do so anyway. Using this change the Thunderbird sieve extension (v0.1.1) seemed to work. However, scripts larger than a tcp frame still caused failures. All these issues are fixed in the latest version of the sieve add-on (currently v0.1.4). - Cleaned up the new proxy source. My editor made the indentation a complete mess in terms of TABs vs spaces. - Added TRYLATER response codes to BYE and NO messages where appropriate. - Recopied the libsieve library into this patch to incorporate any changes that were made (only sieve-cmu.c still needs to be compared to the old cmu-sieve.c). This also solves the __attribute__((unused)) GCC dependencies. These were fixed long ago by Timo.... the code duplication beast strikes again. (Will have to do this again for dovecot 1.1) - Removed spurious return value from void function in src/lib-sieve/sieve-implementation.c as reported by Robin Breathe. GCC fails to report these issues. The function involved is currently not used and serves only as an example on how dovecot could support multiple sieve back-ends... Hi all, We're migrating off our current mail server with runs postfix and imapd on an AIX machine to Postfix and Dovecot running linux. Our customers have a lot of IMAP folders with folders they configured, which are currently located in their /home directory on the current mail server. The new mail server will have them at the same location. How do I configure Dovecot so that when a customer connects via IMAP using their favorite e-mail client, that the folders will be there? I have problem with quota limit settings for "deliver" - global plugin settings overrides userdb quota setting !!! imap and pop3 works fine. Quota limit for user is set to "quota=maildir:ignore=Kosz:storage=512". And "maildirsize" file in user's mail_location contains "524288S" line - good. But when I set: ---------------- plugin { quota = maildir:ignore=Kosz:storage=102400 } ---------------- in "/etc/dovecot.conf", quota limit is set to "104857600S" in "maildirsize" file - BAD. [Dovecot] High CPU utilization on Solaris 10

I've read similar post about such an issue, but have not seen any posted solutions. I have a clean install of Solaris 10 running a Sunfire v440 w/postfix. I am using dovecote solely for SMTP authentication, and it is working just fine except while running top I constantly see: 548 root 1 30 0 5240K 3416K run 522:51 49.45% dovecot-auth The process never crashes, nor are there any errors. I ran a test devel box with an almost identical setup of postfix and dovecot on Solaris 9 (V240) and the functionality is identical, but with no high CPU usage. [Dovecot] dovecot notifying a database about total number of messages.

Hello, in addition to our mail system, we have some other systems which needs to know how many messages, and how many unread messages, a user has in his/her inbox (maildir). Currently, we have a mod_perl script which takes a mail address as input, and then traverses the maildir, and outputs the number of unread messages. Our challenge is that the maildirs are located on a SAN, and traversing a maildir is slow. We currently have more than 100 requests pr. second, which we handle with caching, and spreading the load across different servers. I'm looking into the possibility of either using dovecots index files, or having dovecot update a database with total number of messages/number of unread messages. Question: 1) if I'm using perl, is there any way I can read in the information in the index files? Is the data formatted in some standarized way, so that I can parse it, or use a module which read in the data? (if I can read the indexes in wrapper scripts to imap/pop/deliver, then I could probably update a database with the information) 2) how would you proceed, if the aim is to end up with dovecot notifying a database regarding the number of messages, and unread messages? -- Erland Nylend

Hello everyone, please keep my CC'd, I'm not on the list. I've been using dovecot happily via an ssh tunnel. My mutt is configured to use IMAP, and the tunnel is as follows in my muttrc: set tunnel="ssh -q mymailhost 'MBOX_LOCKS=fcntl MAIL=/home/jlbec/mail /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap'" It should be pretty obvious that this logs into mymailhost as me (via SSH keyauth) and runs /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap directly as a foreground process. Setting MAIL, it points dovecot imap to my mbox folders. dovecot imap speaks imap over stdin/out, this goes over the ssh to mutt. It works great. Really great. I don't need root access at all, the server isn't running dovecot globally, and I get IMAP through firewalls if I can ssh through a firewall/vpn. I'm using mbox and fcntl, so my MTA has no trouble working in concert. However, this doesn't appear to be documented anywhere. A friend showed it to me, and I don't even remember who that was. I'm now considering changing to maildir folders. I figure dovecot imap might figure out a folder is maildir when stat says S_IFDIR, but without documentation, I can't figure out how to tell dovecot imap to use maildir when I create a folder. I'm also unsure how this will interact with my MTA. For the latter, I'm thinking I just need to configure my MTA to use dovecot's deliver program. For the former, is there some magic environment variable I need to add to my tunnel command line? HI all, Some time ago I've user(a)domain.com in maildir mailbox with their own mails, their folders, subfolders, indexes files.. etc My server was missconfigured and I've rebuilded all SMTP; I've recreated all the mailboxes with same names that before. Of course, the problem is the content of these mailboxes it's not the same. So, the idea is: add all the contento from user(a)domain.com (old) mailbox to user(a)domain.com (new) mailbox. because I have got a complete copy of (old) mailboxes and their content. ¿How can I do it?

Hello, I'm configurating dovecot 1.0.3 on debian etch. While trying to set public folders, y decided to have the index and control files on the users homes. those homes are mounted by nfs, with disabled access to root. [Dovecot] ANY password option

Hi We sometimes migrate mailboxes over to one of our mail servers which has a very handy feature called 'ANY password'. This will allow access to a mailbox using the given username and disregard checking for the password. This is a useful feature for many reasons. Is there a possibility Dovecot could have such a a feature or is there a workaround already. Thanks Master

[Dovecot] Moving a mail between folders and post-processing ?

Hi, Within Dovecot is there a way of spotting a change to a folder and running a post-processing script on the email that was moved ? I'm specifically after a way of seeing either an email entering or leaving a folder - preferably running a different post-process script depending on the direction. Essentially if an email enters or is moved out of a 'spam' folder I'd like to mark it as 'spam'/'ham' in the Bayesian filters respectively. Is there any such mechanism, or should I start looking at how to write a plugin to achieve this ? If it's the plugin route is there any good documentation on the plugin APIs etc ? [Dovecot] MANAGESIEVE patch v5 for dovecot 1.0.2

Hello dovecot users, I have finally updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to fix the currently known small problems with the protocol implementation. Also, I included a proxy implementation based on imap-proxy.c. This patch is designed for dovecot release 1.0.2 and it will not apply cleanly to the 1.1 versions yet. Change Log V5 ------------- - Applied patch by Uldis Pakuls to fix master_dump_settings bug - Added some compilation/installation info to the README - Moved README to source tree's root as README.managesieve - Fixed minor error handling bug in sieve_storage.c with respect to a missing root directory. - Now sieve capabilities are reported as they are specified by the implementing library and not in forced upper case. The sieve RFC now explicitly states that sieve capability identifiers are case-sensitive. This broke compatibility with SquirrelMail/Avelsieve. - Disabled ANONYMOUS login entirely until proper support is implemented. V4 claimed to do so as well, but in fact it only stopped announcing it. - Implemented managesieve-proxy. It is not so much a clean copy of imap-proxy, since the managesieve greeting is much more complex and requires parsing. Configuration is identical to imap-proxy. This seems to be a little under-documented however (http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields) This patch still includes (yet another) instance of the CMU Sieve source, as explained in one of my previous e-mails (http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-July/015016.html) Current plans include merging src/lib-managesieve with src/lib-imap, updating the patch for dovecot-1.1 and fixing any problems you might find. The processes are still running, the network ports are open, but the login just hangs. [Dovecot] use of deliver from procmail advisable?

Hi list, I understand that dovecot's deliver does a little more than deliver: it also updates the dovecot metadata stored with each Maildir. Thus, if I use deliver as opposed to procmail's internal Maildir delivery, it seems that the IMAP server later has less work to do since the metadata is can use are up to date. Doing this, however, incurs an extra process for each mail delivered. I thus wonder whether the two balance each other out, or whether there is a strong difference. Tried it both with users using mbox (where this would be a filesystem directory) and maildir. Failed everytime because of a test which rejects folder names that end with MAILDIR_FS_SEP. Looks like the above bit of code is supposed to catch these, make a note of the fact that the client wants a directory, and strip off that trailing separator. In fact, it does this in the case of 'full_mailbox'. However, for 'mailbox' (it seems to me) the code is incorrect as its using the len-1 which is the length of 'full_mailbox', not 'mailbox'. This means that when 'mailbox' and 'full_mailbox' are the same length--that is, for the default namespace (no prefix), it happens to work. However, in any other namespace, it won't, as 'full_mailbox' will always be longer then 'mailbox' if there is a ns prefix, and hence that trailing separator won't be trimmed. (As a matter of fact, in the unlikely instance that the prefix is a single character this will trim the null character from 'mailbox', which probably isn't a good thing.) So. Am I missing something, or crazy, or is this really a bug? Thanks, -Brian

We think that a simple patch to dovecot could cure this problem. I am willing to write the patch but would really like to get your opinion first. In order to keep track of which IMAP message is stored in which local file, offlineimap uses the message UID, which is guaranteed to be unique in the directory, but constant across sessions. When uploading a new message to the IMAP server with APPEND, offlineimap then has to run a SEARCH to obtain said UID for the message it just uploaded. This takes ages on larger mailboxes, as the way offlineimap identifies the message is via a header that's not indexed by dovecot. The solution I found in RFC4315 ("UIDPLUS"; http://www1.tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4315) and then I saw http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2004-July/003993.html, and now I am wondering: is anyone else interested in APPENDUID? What's the status of an implementation, if any? Newer Courier IMAP server implementation support UIDPLUS and offlineimap will likely obtain this functionality soon. I attach a patch that adds some informational logging for the vacation outcome in a similar style as the 'notify', 'redirect' and 'reject' cases. I considered adding logging for the not-willing-to-respond case since I think that would greatly assist testing/debugging vacation responses, but couldn't see where to put it that wasn't in the CMU code.

[Dovecot] plain authentication

After upgrading my server I have found that Im not able to use plain auth for clients conecting from outside server. localhost clients (pine, webmail) works fine, but if I use Thunderbird I got an error saying that server requires TLS or SSL. But if I enable TLS or SSL I got more errors. I have tried sevral combinations, but havent found a working one. [Dovecot] Inbox re-initialized

Hi folks, I just replaced my mail server's UW-imap with dovecot yesterday. I use the following folder setting default_mail_env = mbox:/asiaa/home/%u/:/asiaa/home/%u/mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/asiaa/home/%u/mail/dovecot_indexes This is a Scientific linux 4.2 with dovecot 0.99.11-2 . Now today the server loading is highly reduced because of the pop3 session impact is low. But users have the following problems: For outlook express users, when they come in the office, the first time they launch outlook express, they found that the previous Inbox is re-transmitted. So they got double the number of all past e-mails (they setup OE setting to keep a copy on the server). And some users also use pine. After the pine session, they get another whole copy of the past e-mails (so some users got 3X or even 4X the past e-mails). [Dovecot] using complete email address as username

I've been poking around the dovecot wiki, and this idea looks plausible. I'm just double-checking with the assembled experts to see if there is some "gotcha" that will happen to me down the road. I have in mind a deployment of dovecot which will use serve several unrelated domains. My plan is to use the complete email address of the users as the unique userid. So, for example, a user with email address <foo(a)example.COM> is unrelated to a user with email address <foo(a)example.NET>. The "home" directories of such users will look something like: /some/path/foo(a)example.com/ /some/path/foo(a)example.net/ I do also plan to use ACLs for some things, so there could be ACL entries of the form: user:foo@example.com ... I will probably be using the quota plugin for individual users right away and group quotas later when that's officially available. So, is all this likely to work or will it collapse in a miasma of unmet expectations? Thanks in advance for any comments!

Hello 2gether, I am using Dovecot 1.0.rc15 together with Outlook (I apologize) via IMAPS. Now I discovered, that all the old eMails, I marked for deleting, are still there, even the veeery old ones. Dovecot is marking the eMails (I am using maildir configuration) files with an "ST" extension. Is there any switch to turn on garbage collection and maybe a screw to tune the duration until deletion? [Dovecot] Version 1.1 Alpha 2 Various Stuff

Some preamble information… OS X 10.4.10 (all updates) Power Mac Dual G5, 2.0 Postfix with Dovecot SASL, Dovecot LDA, Dovecot imaps (openssl) Mail clients Apple Mail v 2.1 SquirrelMail v 1.4.10a Thunderbird v 2.0.0.6 Mulberry v 4.06 For various versions of Dovecot, from 0.9m up through 1.0.3 things went well, no memorable big problems, with one exception: Mulberry v 4.0.8 would/will not work; i.e. it refuse(d) to connect saying it could not start SSL to begin the connection. Dropped back to version 4.0.6. I switched to version 1.1 alpha 2 (compile and configuration information is attached at the end of this message) 1) Started up Apple mail. Mail boxes disappeared in Apple Mail's list, except for the main Inbox mail box. Fixed by setting mailbox_list_index_disable = yes in the Dovecot.conf file, restarted both Dovecot and Mail, all the mailboxes reappeared and worked correctly. 2) Started up Squirrel Mail using several different browsers. No problems. 3) Started up Thunderbird. No problems. 4) Started up Mulberry. It partially connected, but stopped with the error saying that it had hit the limit for maximum connections. Mail logs show: dovecot: imap-login: Maximum number of connections exceeded: user=<username>, method=PLAIN, rip=192.168.1.1, lip=192.168.1.50, TLS I tried increasing the various limits in the Dovecot.conf file up through a maximum limit of 2048 connections, to no avail. Mulberry will initially connect to several of the mailboxes, but will stop without getting all of them and will throw up the 'over the connection limit' error and will then show you a dialog box that asks you to log-in. Attempting to doing so returns a fatal error 54. [Dovecot] Crash with 1.1alpha2 when lazy_expunge is enabled?

I'm seeing a crash in 1.1alpha2 when trying to expunge a folder when "lazy_expunge" is enabled: namespace private { separator = . prefix = .EXPUNGED/ location = maildir:/mailstore/%u/Expunged hidden = yes } ... lazy_expunge = .EXPUNGED/ .EXPUNGED/ .EXPUNGED/ Commenting out "lazy_expunge" prevents the crash and mail is expunged. It happens with and without ACL's. Attached is the log output. Usage: mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u protocol imap { mail_plugins = mbox_snarf } protocol pop3 { mail_plugins = mbox_snarf } plugin { mbox_snarf = ~/mbox } If ~/mbox doesn't exist, nothing special is done. If ~/mbox exists, it's treated as INBOX and mails are moved from /var/mail/%u whenever the mailbox is synchronized. If all the messages couldn't be copied, for example because of out of quota, then none of the messages are copied. I suppose that could be a problem. It might be possible to fix that by changing: if (mailbox_copy(dest_trans, mail, 0, NULL, NULL) < 0) { if (!mail->expunged) { ret = -1; break; } } to just: if (mailbox_copy(dest_trans, mail, 0, NULL, NULL) < 0) { if (!mail->expunged) break; } But I'm not sure about that. [Dovecot] Outlook 2000/2003 frequent disconnect issue

I have been using Dovecot for an IMAP server for a few years now, with no hitch. Even using Outlook 2K/2K3 as a client. Yesterday, I had a user experience the 'Negative UIDs' issue spoken of here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Clients/NegativeUIDs I performed all of the steps mentioned in this article, and it seemed like it would work properly the first time the user checked their email, and then after that, they would get this error again. I checked to see what the latest stable version of Dovecot was, and decided to upgrade. I was at 0.99.11-8 and the latest stable rpm for my distro was 1.0.2-2. The upgrade went fine. Or so I thought. I am now getting the following message on all Outlook Clients: "Your IMAP Server closed the connection....this can occur if the connection is idle for too long" I have scoured the Internet for this error and have come up with many suggestions, none of which have worked. I have increased Outlook's timeout period to the full 10 minutes, and I have disabled SELinux. None of this seems to have worked. Is there anyone out there who has actually had this issue and resolved it? Can you please help? [Dovecot] Database server failure causes endless loop

Hi, I've just started setting up Dovecot 1.0.1, and made an error in my configuration, which I think has found a potential problem in Dovecot. I'm using PostgreSQL authentication, and set the database host to "localhost", which PostgreSQL doesn't listen on, so libpq is throwing the standard "is the server running?" message. The problem, however, is Dovecot isn't seeming to understand this, and is endlessly looping, trying to query it every 5 seconds. My client (telnet during testing) is simply sitting there waiting for a response, which it's never going to get. After about 5 minutes, Dovecot killed the connection, saying "* BYE Disconnected for inactivity." If this was from an IMAP client, I'm guessing the client would time-out after so long when it doesn't get a response back. Wouldn't it be more sensible for Dovecot to try PostgreSQL, say, 3 times. If unsuccessful, send the client an "internal server error" or something similar? Otherwise if the database server failed, and the client tries to connect, it'd be waiting for at least a minute (or whatever the standard time-out interval is) before failing, whereas it'd be better to see almost instantly if the server's down. Here they go: - Is it OK to move mailboxes around from under Dovecot? Case in point: I'm using procmail to pass incoming mail through bogofilter (the standard recipe mentioned in their manpage, which more or less funnels spam into a "spam" mailbox, unsure into an "unsure" and non-spam into "inbox"). From time to time I'd like to clear the spam and unsure mailboxes, using logrotate. Dovecot seems to cope with it. Am I tempting my luck? - Is there a way to tell an external application when mail has been moved by a client? Again: dovecot+bogofilter: from time to time a client checks incoming, unsure and sometimes spam and decides to move --say-- a mail from unsure to spam (deciding it's spam, after all) or similar. This is of course important for the training of bogofilter, so I'd like to trigger a backend action. I see basically two possibilities: - create two more mailboxes, say "spam-indeed" and "ham-indeed". User is told to move mail into these. Ham-indeed gets re-funneled to inbox (or something like that). Manual and error prone. - Use the mail_log plugin (seems more attractive). I still have (distro-provided) dovecot 0.99.14, but this would be a good reason to upgrade. (I still don't see where I get the source mailbox in the mail_log messages from, but that's details now). You get the idea, I think. Anyway, I am interested in any ways to combine dovecot and bogofilter in the backend in a way that I can route user feedback to the filter without putting too much burden on the user. Ideas? Hello Timo, I've noticed that when slapd which I'm using as the passdb and the prefetched userdb is restarted I have to restart dovecot. Did a quick-n-dirty install of 1.1.alpha2 on a Fedora Core 6 server... am getting the following message in the maillog, though there seems to be no problem accessing mail. Error seems to be consistent for all users. Running 1.0.3 on the system previously. Hi, I am using Dovecot to manage a complex virtual mailbox setup. It's all working splendidly, thanks to the Dovecot LDA. This morning, however, I needed to create a vacation-style autoreply for one of the virtual addresses. I made use of cmusieve, authored a little sieve script, and had it working in no time... until I discovered how limited sieve's vacation module is. Most importantly: it's hardcoded to use the Return-Path of a message, but in this very case, I need to actually use the address in the from header. So I had to give up on sieve and am now looking for another solution, but without much success. Given that mail is delivered by the Dovecot LDA, is there any way to make deliver pass it off to e.g. procmail in such a way that $HOME is set to /srv/vmail/domain.org/localpart, so that procmail can find the .procmailrc? Hello, Before asking help, i would like thank Timo for this awesome server, it's lite, fast, and has good features. I've read the Wiki, tutorials, and tried various configurations to get the result I expect. My company is running a dovecot 1.0.0 server set up with an LDAP directory, mails are delivered to /var/spool/imap and users do not have a real unix home directory on this system. During my internship, I've installed a sieve server (pysieved) that is working with dovecot. But I encountered a problem with the LDAP setup. Pysieved is using dovecot's auth and client sockets to authenticate the user and get it's home directory where it will store sieve scripts, this home directory is also actually used by cmusieve. With our setup, users do not have /home directories on the mail server but the homeDirectory LDAP attribute is used by other services and cannot be modified for dovecot. I know we have the option to create a new attribute, set it to something like /var/spool/imap/<user> for every mail users, and use this new attribute name in dovecot-ldap.conf with the user_db statement. This is actually working on a test environnement, but we wish we could do it without any modification on the LDAP directory. The very precise question is : How can I tell dovecot to compute the « home » path from the login name when using LDAP userdb ? By example, if a user has login name "jdoe", dovecot will authenticate him against the LDAP directory but won't get the home path from it. Instead, it will use the same mail_location path (if possible) or something similar, like /var/spool/imap/%1u/%u . Hi there, I got dovecot compiled and running on HP-UX 11.23. It's using LDAPUX and PAM for authentication. So far, it works. But after logging in the connection is closed immediately. It looks like this: telnet <ip> 143 Connected to ... Escape character is '^]'. * OK Dovecot ready. a01 login <user> <pass> Connection closed by foreign host. The dovecot log says: Error: imap-login: fd_send(7) failed: Bad file number Error: child 22629 (login) returned error 89 As far as I can see, the problem seems to reside in dovecot's fdpass.c... dovecot version: 1.0.3 gcc version: 2.9 Any ideas or solutions? [Dovecot] UIDL match from 0.99.13 to 1.0-1.2

I am moving from and old FC2 system to a new RHEL5 system and am having trouble getting the UIDLs to move over right, mainly the UID. I copy over the mailbox, and see the x-uid in the message is what it was on the old server, but when I telnet in to check pop, it rewrites x-uid in the message to something new, causing old messages to get downloaded again, which is not what we want I have tried setting pop3_reuse_xuidl to yes, but that did not change anything, probably because that is the wrong header (I do not have x-uidl, but I do have x-uid). I do have pop3_uidl_format set to %v.%u for compatibility. [Dovecot] Userdb and home directories

Greetings - I've just discovered an oddity I didn't know I had... We have two NetApp filers: one serves people's home directories; the other their message store and control files filestores. At the moment the first of the two filers is not accessible to my Dovecot system and I assumed all would be well because, as far as I knew, I wasn't using it at all. However in practice Dovecot DOES appear to be using it: it is trying to chdir() to my home directory when I login, finds it can't at the moment (because of a problem giving "Permission denied"), and closes the connection. I've read the pages on home directories and the userdb on the Wiki and it advises that having a home directory is beneficial. I'm happy to create a subdirectory for this within a user's control files directory, but do NOT want it on our normal filestore: we can't have mail inaccessible because a user's home directory is inaccessible because the other filer is out of action. We use shadow for the passdb and passwd for the userdb (see dovecot - n output below). I'm trying to work out how to override the home directory returned from NIS. Ultimately I'd like to use this template: /mailstore/control/%1Ln/%Ln/home but for the time being while I'm trying to work out how to do it have my own area hard-coded in (as it's only me logging in to the test system): /mailstore/control/p/pmb1/home I'm specifying this with the "args" directive in the userdb section as follows: args = home=/mailstore/control/p/pmb1/home but it isn't being picked up. What am I doing wrong, please? (We want to continue using uids and gids etc from NIS so I don't think using the static userdb is the right thing to do?) I tried to disable courier-pop3 today in favour of dovecot pop3. [Dovecot] dovecot-sieve vacation changes

I'd like to put forward the following patch for dovecot-sieve. Essentially this just merges in some changes made in CMU sieve 2.3.8 and as such brings the behaviour more in line with RFC 3834 "Recommendations for Automatic Responses to Electronic Mail": - fixes erroneous sender "-request" substring match - checks for existence of a selection of list-* headers - expands "named-as-recipient" header checks to "Resent-To", "Resent-CC" and "Resent-BCC" fields. Note that the appended patch also includes a fix for some missing parentheses in the "resent-to" test which resulted in some extra work being done but was otherwise harmless. The fix has been sent to <cyrus-bugs+(a)andrew.cmu.edu> - prefixes subject in response with "Auto: " rather than (non-expanding) "Re: " I also, mostly for kicks, attach two sieve-like scripts that attempt to encapsulate the when-not-to-respond logic as implemented (if the patch were to be applied) and as advised by RFC 3834 respectively. I wrote these as an exercise to help me gain a better understanding of sieve and the CMU implementation. I'm not sure they are otherwise useful.

For v1.1, probably applies to v1.0 code pretty easily too: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot/rev/078d9dde99c8 The other rquota patches had authunix_create_default() call. Is this needed/useful? The client is now always created+destroyed for each quota lookup. I'd think it would be faster if it was created only once, but does it then break something? If the above isn't done, clnt_create() could be replaced with clntudp_create() and have the struct sockaddr_in cached. Patches welcome. :)

Hi, I'm trying to set up two shared folder hierarchies on my Dovecot installation for two groups of employees, all of whom should only have access to their own hierarchy. Any employee should be able to create sub-folders and generally have full access to the hierarchy. My initial setup was to create two public namespaces, Shared-One and Shared-Two. Each is a Maildir under /var/mail. The actual shared folders seem to be working fine in terms of adding and accessing folders and messages, and there are no problems at all for the 'admin' user, who belongs to both the shared1 and shared2 Unix groups. The problem is for other users, where trying to (IMAP-) LIST folders fails. (sanitized) IMAP session log: ('user2' is in group shared2) * OK Dovecot ready. A LOGIN user2 pass A OK Logged in. B LIST "" "%" * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "/" "Shared-One" B NO Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. (e.g. both have a 'Projects' sub-folder, but there's a pretty clear WARNING on the wiki about mailbox name conflicts.) I can't use symlinked Maildirs, because new subfolders get created under ~user/Maildir/. (Want them under /var/mail/Shared-X/) I can't use hidden namespaces, because employees use Outlook (uggh), and I couldn't figure out how to "find" the namespace when it was hidden. (That seemed like the closest thing to a solution - it solved the LIST problem.) Ideally, Shared-Two wouldn't even be visible to members of Shared-One, and vice versa. But, that's at least an acceptable "problem" I could live with. Any suggestions? Thanks, Ben

Hi. I'm using SMTP auth with Exim authenticating against Dovecot's auth socket. Seeing a few core dumps on my two proxy servers with dovecot-auth since upgrading to 1.0.2. [Dovecot] Authentication problem - or is it?

My old server ran v.0.99, and this is the first time I've tried to get v.1 running. When I try to test it with telnet I see telnet localhost 143 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to david.lydgate.lan (127.0.0.1). Escape character is '^]'. * OK Dovecot ready. x login anne xxxxxx x OK Logged in. Connection closed by foreign host. I assumed it was an authentication problem (I want to use /etc/passwd as the authentication file) but it does say that I managed to log in. If so, what could be causing it to close immediately? Anne

I'm not aware of any major problems and I think I'm pretty much done with new features (except for dbox). The largest changes since alpha1: * Removed THREAD indexing. It's a bit buggy and I think there's a better chance of releasing a bugfree v1.1 soon if it's not included. I'll fix it after v1.1. * Removed THREAD=X-REFERENCES2 also because it wasn't as easy to implement with the old threading code. I might put this back though if there's enough interest. * PAM always works in blocking=yes mode now. If you have problems with memory leaks, change auth_worker_max_request_count setting. + Filesystem quota backend supports inode limits, group quota and RPC quota for NFS. + SEARCH and SORT finally compare all characters case-insensitively. We use i;unicode-casemap algorithm. + Config files support splitting values to multiple lines with \ + Winbind NTLM and GSS-SPNEGO mechanism patches by Dmitry Butskoy.

[Dovecot] Not seeing other folders with some clients

Hi all I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc15 to serve a maildir by IMAP. I have an IMAP subdirectory called subscriptions. The messages are in maidir/.subscriptions/cur/ etc. Dovecot is renaming the directory .subscriptions/ to subscriptions/ This means that when my IMAP client requests this directory, it gets the message "no such directory", and dovecot also gives the error message: dovecot: IMAP(tcv): read() failed with subscription file /var/mail/maildir/tcv/subscriptions: Is a directory The two should be able to live happily side by side, with the subscriptions file called "subscriptions" and the maildir called ".subsciptions". The offending function is maildir_subscriptions_convert_099() in src/lib-storage/index/maildir/maildir-storage.c Can someone with developer access please change this so that rename() is not called if subscriptions is a directory. Hi, I just wanted to "beautify" my dovecot configuration file and as one of the first comments suggests whitespaces and <TAB> should be completly ignored but that doesn't seem to be the case, e.g.: postmaster_address<TAB>= some(a)address.de results in an configuration error as the postmaster_address is not set. Using just a space or replacing the <TAB> char with space chars resolves the problem. This is with dovecot version 1.0.3 on Debian and FreeBSD. Greetings, Sascha
