Hi, One of my users can't read message of his Inbox, he can view subject of message with Thunderbird or Squirrelmail and IMAP but when he click on a message in order to read it he has thess messages with Thunderbird : The current command did not succeed. Invalidmessageset: 1181461470:-1181461446. ou 1181461444:* ou 1181461444:-1181461445 with Squirrelmail : SquirrelMail: ERREUR ERREUR: Le serveur IMAP n'a pas trouvé le message requis. La cause probable est que votre liste de messages n'est pas à jour et le message a été déplacé ou supprimé (éventuellement par un autre programme qui utilise la même boîte aux lettres). traduction : IMAP server doesn't find the message Your message list isnt up to day or has been delated or moved.... With the mail -f command I can read messages and with POP3 protocol and Thunderbird also. Install : dovecot-0.99.11-4.EL4 :-( What can I do ? Thanks Sophie

[Dovecot] Password Problems

I have a user that has a password that has {} in it (left and right curly brackets). Under earlier versions of dovecot (less than v1) there weren't any problems with it. Now that we've upgraded to v1, his password no longer work. The short term solution is for him to change his password, which he has. Has anyone else seen this same problem? It seems to pop up more when using webmail apps such as Squirrelmail or Uebiumaiu. Thanks!

We are considering switching from the Washington UW IMAP server to Dovecot for performance reasons, but we make use of the feature in the UW server that automatically moves new email from the mail spool to the IMAP INBOX. Has anyone implemented this in Dovecot, or considered implementing it ? Hello, I'm setting up a new mail server using freebsd 6.2, postfix, dovecot with SASL and, eventually, squirrelmail. I've gone through http://wiki.dovecot.org/TestPop3Installation the program is running, plain works over telnet from local host or from a remote machine. I can do stat and retr commands. however, when I try to use the login method (that is what the command 1 login username password part is, isn't it?) all I get is: -ERR Unknown command. even with auth_verbose = yes auth_debug = yes, logs give no information. Perhaps the first fundamental is that Internet email isn't handled by one kind of server. It's a suite of protocols that are served by distinct processes. At minimum, you have inbound (POP3, IMAP) and outbound (SMTP) servers. You may also have a separate authentication server (LDAP) and perhaps other pieces providing calendaring, web mail (HTTP), and central storage of client configuration (ACAP). The different protocols exist not because some programmer thought it would be cool to create a new protocol, but because they serve completely different needs. For example, POP3 was designed to support lightweight disconnected clients. IMAP provides server-based storage of mail folders. LDAP provides authentication not just for mail systems but for many other applications. (I'm sure experts for each of these protocols could provide better explanations. The RFC for each probably has a motivation section that you can quote.) An important "slide" in the presentation would show the plumbing that ties all these protocols and processes together and shows how mail moves through the system. In some cases the plumbing itself is variable. For example, spam and virus processing might occur within several servers or within a client.

Hello everyone, I'm using Dovecot (v1.0.beta3-3ubuntu5.4 under Ubuntu) with postfix and LDA with virtual users. Everything is working fine. To filter mails I use the Dovecot Sieve feature. This is probably the more prevalent, and annoying of the two problems. facts: * There was only one active client. * The client was T'bird, v1.5.0.10, running on XP. * This particular test had a 3Mb attachment. * The mail was delivered immediately to the single, remote recipient (after a ~20 seconds of 3Mb upload). * The "Copying to Sent Folder" dialog stayed up for (no exaggeration) 15-minutes, and then completed; the message is in the Sent folder now. suspicion, from months of experiencing the behavior: * Attachments are usually involved. How does the config look? Are the mbox lock settings appropriate? [Dovecot] Converting Courier mailboxes to Dovecot

Hi, I have around 100 mailboxes (maildirs) to convert from Courier IMAP (4.1.3) to Dovecot. (From a recent backup) I've tested a few mailboxes on Dovecot 1.0.0, and while the client doesn't notice any difference (at least in Thunderbird) I'm hoping to get rid of the old Courier folders and convert any useful information they may have into Dovecot. I've tried Timo's migration script (http://www.dovecot.org/tools/courier-dovecot-migrate.pl) but it fails at line 230 with a "no file/directory" error. At that line, it appears to be finding Courier's keywords folder (courierimapkeywords), and looking for a file called ":list". However in my mailboxes, there's no file by that name, only what looks like a set of standard IMAP filenames, most of which are empty files. If I can't salvage anything useful, is there any adverse effects to me deleting all the "courier*" files/folders from each mailbox and subfolders so when the client connects back when Dovecot's running, it creates it's own UIDs and keywords etc? Hello Folks, I've my dovecot working well and authenticating in my ldap servers. But I'd like configure my users to authenticate in two ways. One is just submitting the username and the other one is providing user(a)domain.com . I'm moving from a cyrus-imap solution to dovecot and I've implemented it with VD domains. But nowadays I still have one domain at my servers. So to no cause to much impact to users, I'd like to provide this two ways of authentication. [Dovecot] Sieve not recognizing keywords

First, I've been lurking and using dovecot for a few years now and I've always liked it, great piece of software! :) I've finally decided to clean up my act here and get virutal users and get postfix (2.3), dovecot (1.0.0) and deliver to play nice, using postfixadmin. I have it 99% there, but one thing is left: When I receive mails, deliver finds my virtual home dir and then tries to compile the sieve script (converted from procmail with the script mentioned in the wiki), and then always bums out on this: sieve parse error: line 3: Unsupported features in require line and line 3 looks like this: require ["fileinto","regex","envelope","vacation"]; which should be fine? Then I googled around and found this thread from january: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-January/018376.html Which made it sound like the sieve plugin 1.0.0 had a bug that got fixed in 1.0.1. I am doing all of this on Gentoo, so I decided to just redo the ebuild so that I got the dovecot 1.0.0 ebuild, but with the sieve plugin 1.0.1. Aparently I get the same error and now am at a loss here. Any pointers? -A

[Dovecot] Testing IMAP clients with Dovecot, problems with MacMail

I've been testing my user community's IMAP clients when I try to login and then transfer a big message from the inbox into a folder in an overquota folder directory. I am using native filesystem quotaing in AIXV5.3 with UWIMAP and comparing my results with what I see with Dovecot 1.0.0. (My Dovecot built without any plugins or quota extensions) Everything matches/works except for Mac Mail under SSL with Dovecot.. Mac Mail: 1) with UWIMAP, login and mailbox load goes OK, then the illegal overquota xfer fails (as it should) with a popup reading 'Message could not be moved', with (port 993) and without (port 143) SSL 2) with Dovecot, 1) login and mailbox load goes OK to port 10143, plain listen, and the illegal xfer correctly fails as it should with a popup messge under a plain connection, but 2) When the port number is set to the Dovecot ssl_listen port and the SSL box is checked, Mac Mail doesn't bring up the inbox and folders...it acts like it can't connect. Has anyone else seen this behavior, and is there a fix? Mac Mail is also known as Mail.app. I am testing it at 1.3.11 and 2.1.1. This is a dovecot question so bear with me. I just upgraded to Ubuntu 7.04 from 6.06. I used fetchmail and postfix but not dovecot on 6.06. Fetchmail retrieved my mail and postfix put it in my maildir. I used Evolution to access the maildir directly. I setup Evolution to send mail directly as well. With this move I decided to go the extra step and get dovecot working. With some help on this form, I did that. But, I immediately started having trouble with getting my mail. Fetchmail is retrieving it but postfix keeps not processing for some reason. So my question is, I know that dovecot only serves up email to a mail client but, does it do something that I have totally missed that would some how or some way refer mail back to a server? Is there some type of address check or something going on? I know Im grasping at straws here but, I have been unable to get help from the postfix list or any list for that matter so if I can eliminate one more piece of the puzzle, all the better. Thanks.

Hi everyone I have setup an ISP style mail system using postfix, dovecot, squirrelmail and mysql on ubuntu server 7.04. Everything seems to be working fine with sending recieving emails but relaying on submission service (port 587). I want to allow any client to be able to relay as long as they AUTH using dovecot SASL and are valid users regardless of what IP/host they come in from. I have a feeling that the submission service is not able to make use of dovecot sasl-auth. Hello listmembers, we have some trouble connecting postfix to dovecot. after a lot of hours the transport and delivery is working but dovecot can't get the correct user. postmap -q some.user(a)domain.com ldap:/etc/postfix/ldap-aliases.cf first returns: someuser The mailbox someuser exists and i can login with this user on imap and i can deliver directly using deliver -d but on mail delivery thrue postfix dovecot is not looking for someuser. [Dovecot] Any plans for storing messages on a database?

Redudancy and recovering from a mailstore failure is one of the concerns I am trying to address where I work. Any plans to have Dovecot store emails in a database? NAS/SAN devices which do automatic replication to a second device are extremely expensive. I also don't see any distributed filesystem which is mature and available for the OS we use (FreeBSD). I recall at one point, many months back, Timo mentioned that perhaps storing the messages in the database was a possibility for the future. Any additional thoughts on this?

Hi We've been using dovecot successufly for few month. Previous setup : solaris 8, postfix+LDA, mbox + index on NFS (Netapp), 2500 accounts Everything shared overs NFS, multiple servers connect to index, mbox. mail_location = mbox:/var/mail/mbox/%u:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/mail/indexes_dovecot/%u We had at first some issue with mbox locking, using lock_method = dotlock solve the issue. The problem seemed to be with fcntl. I Migrate to maildir to ease administration to use maildir quota I use mb2md-3.20.pl to migrate the mbox everything works smooth. Actual setup : solaris 8, postfix+LDA, maildir + index + control on NFS (Netapp) I change the mail_location settings to mail_location = maildir:/var/mail/maildir/%u:INDEX=/var/mail/indexes_dovecot/%u:CONTROL=/var/mail/dovecot_control/%u And now I'm facing new locking issue : Errors on user loging, users leaving mail on server downloading the same mail over and over. Hi, according to http://wiki.dovecot.fi/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/AllowNets there exists an option allow_nets to restrict IP ranges from where users are allowed to login to Dovecot. I am using Debian Etch with the official Dovecot packages: # dpkg -l | grep dovecot ii dovecot-common 1.0.rc15-2 ii dovecot-imapd 1.0.rc15-2 ii dovecot-pop3d 1.0.rc15-2 using a mostly unchanged dovecot.conf. I tried to add the line allow_nets=127.0.0.0/8,192.168.0.0/16 in the block passdb pam { which is the default enabled auth code in Debian. Dear Dovecot experts, I have a small home server debian based, with postfix/dovecot/squirrelmail installed locally and working. Dovecot is used non-secured (no imaps) but only on the 192.168.0.100 address (address of the server on the local network). I want to use squirrelmail to read my email from outside. Squirrelmail can configured to access it in particular, either through cram-md5 or login auths. In that situation, is it better (I mean more secure) to use : 1) auth mechanim = cram-md5 or 2) auth mechanism = plain (using PAM authentication for dovecot) ? That will determine my dovecot configuration. Thank you Eric

[Dovecot] Strange directory created at dovecot launch

I installed dovecot from scratch and compiled it from 1.0.0 source. Installed in /usr/local. Now everytime I launch dovecot it creates and uses /usr/local/var/lib/dovecot and /usr/local/var/run/dovecot directories. For the latter I found the modifications to do in dovecot.conf for using /var/run/dovecot instead, but for the former I see nothing about such directory in dovecot.conf. What happens ? How can I configure it so that dovecot uses /var/lib/dovecot instead ? Thank you Eric

I have done some testing transfering the mail with the mb2md script, the conversion works correctly, but users gets duplicates since they selected "keep mail on server" I have googled for the problem, and set pop3_reuse_xuidl=yes and pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv is the same on both servers.. but no luck. My first tought was to script in an X-UIDL header for each mail that was converted.. but that wont work since the mail already downloaded by the client didnt contain that header.. is there anyone that has some experience with this, or knows if its possible? Hi everyone, I have a client I've been trying to talk into switching from courier to dovecot, but the owner of the company wants me to set up two different accounts in Thunderbird (I finally got him switched to that from outlook express), one accessing his account through courier, and one through dovecot, so he can compare the speed... I'm having a problem with authentication using PAM, connected on the back end to Active Directory. PAM authentication itself works fine. We can log in to the machine using AD credentials without any problems. Each user is automatically mapped to uid's in the 10000+ range. However, for some reason when the user logs in via dovecot, the user's uid and gid are showing up as 0. For example: dovecot: May 01 11:22:47 Info: auth(default): master out: USER 3 mzukowski uid=0 gid=0 home=/home/URBACON/mzukowski dovecot: May 01 11:22:47 Error: Logins with UID 0 not permitted (user mzukowski) Is there a reason why dovecot might not be resolving the uid and gid correctly? PAM itself seems to be doing this right, since when I log on to the machine as an AD user, their UID shows up correctly as 10000+. I have been using uw-imap on my mailserver. I tried briefly to use dovecot with the default config. It seem to work faster, but users imap folders (user accounts are in openldap) disappeared. Is there a sample config somewhere I can look at to get some idea how to configure dovecot so all the imap folders users created will appear when I make the switch? Most of my users login via Horde. Hi, I am playing with Sieve, everything is working nice except notify method. Source script looks like this (generated with avelsieve): require ["fileinto","envelope","reject","vacation","imapflags","relational","compara tor-i;ascii-numeric","notify"]; if #hashed-avelsieve-source true { keep; notify :method "mailto" :options "xxx(a)xxx.xx" :low :message "Nova zpráva."; } but with no success. Hi, after the upgrade from 0.99 to 1.0rc15 on our RHEL 5 Server I noticed, that some of my mailfolders do double the mails subject line in the listview of thunderbird. The mail itself isn't doubled and the second mail contains a different content from a mail that didn't show up in the list. SO it seams, that only the subject line is somehow wrong. Any ideas or tips? I haven't found anything on that googling or in the list archive; but maybe I'm searching with the wrong syntax ... Regards Götz

hi guys, we are experiencing this particular problem with one of the webmail server we manage. the server is using dovecot as pop3 and imap server while sendmail is being used as mta. when this user tries to login via telnet, this is what i've got: $ telnet localhost pop3 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1). Escape character is '^]'. +OK dovecot ready. user user1 +OK pass password +OK Logged in. -ERR No INBOX for user. Connection closed by foreign host. when i looked at the maillog i saw this: Apr 25 20:52:32 samplemail pop3(samplemail): File isn't in mbox format: /var/mail/samplemail Apr 25 20:52:32 samplemail pop3(samplemail): File isn't in mbox format: /var/mail/samplemail Apr 25 20:52:32 samplemail pop3(samplemail): Couldn't open INBOX: Internal error occured. Refer to server log for more information. [2007-04-25 20:52:32] tried google but not much of help, they just suggested to update or replace dovecot. i already update dovecot and made some changes to default_mail_env parameter, still the same result. dovecot version is 0.99 on a fedora 4 box any idea?

[Dovecot] Shared mailbox plans

** Configuration ** namespace shared { prefix = user/%u/ location = maildir:/home/%u/Maildir:INDEX=~/Maildir/shared-indexes } So the only difference to how it's configured now is that %u is expanded to whatever user whose mailboxes we're accessing. ACL plugin then uses that user as the owner in the namespace's mailbox owner. Since the default ACL is to not give any access to non-owners, the mailboxes without dovecot-acl files will be invisible. If ACL plugin isn't loaded, I suppose the mailboxes can be accessed if the process has filesystem permissions to access them. ** ACL vfile speedups ** Currently it stat() the dovecot-acl file a bit too often. It doesn't do it more than once a second, but there's really no need to do it even that often. I guess it could be changed to be configurable with default being something like 5 minutes. Create a new dovecot-acl-list file which lists all the mailboxes which have dovecot-acl file with "l" right (visible in mailbox list) to any non-owner. It could be in "<timestamp> <mailbox name>" format. This allows other users to quickly get a list of mailboxes that are potentially visible to them. They still need to read the dovecot-acl file from the mailbox before knowing for sure. If the dovecot-acl-list file doesn't exist or if at any time any timestamp doesn't match dovecot-acl file's current mtime, the file is rebuilt by looking into all mailboxes' dovecot-acl files (if the reading user has write permissions to the directory, otherwise it just keeps it in memory). Whenever Dovecot modifies dovecot-acl file, it also updates the dovecot-acl-list file. This means that the file can contain stale data only if a new dovecot-acl file is created without updating dovecot-acl-list file. Even that will be fixed the next time the owner does a LIST (or select the mailbox, or anything that causes its dovecot-acl file to be stated), which causes ACL plugin to notice the desync. There exist also global ACL files. These need to be included in the dovecot-acl-list file as well. The only issue with them is that user doesn't necessarily have a mailbox even though the global ACL file exists. So these need to be marked somehow in the dovecot-acl-list file as non-existing mailboxes. Then if user creates a mailbox with such name, the mark is removed. Deleting the mailbox puts the mark back. After the visible mailbox list has been figured out once, only the dovecot-acl-list file needs to be stat()ed once in a while instead of all the mailboxes' dovecot-acl files. ** User list ** The next problem is how to quickly get a list of users whose mailboxes are visible to ourself so they can be included in mailbox list. I couldn't figure out anything new and great for this, so the options are the same as in http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006- October/017082.html Although for dict backend I could make it a bit more secure. Currently dict has "private" and "shared read-write" options to store the data with. The shared users list could be done with "shared read- only". ** Virtual domains ** ACL plugin could support virtual "group=@domain" to give access to usernames ending with @domain. Or perhaps the group could support wildcards? "group=*@domain"? That way it wouldn't be required to have @ really in the username. Anyway, I think "anyone" should then be aliased to "group=*@domain". If there are multiple virtual domains and you let the users manipulate the ACLs themselves, I'd think they want anyone to mean anyone within my domain (my organization) rather than really anyone who just happens to be using the same server. I think it would also be annoying if anyone could really force their own mailboxes to be visible to a lot of people. That could be used for spamming as well.. If administrator wants to have global mailboxes that really are visible to all domains, they could be done with public namespaces (not shared). ** Quota ** This is kind of problematic. The behavior depends entirely on quota backend: - Filesystem quota of course tracks the quota based on the file's owner - Maildir++ quota counts the quota for the user whose maildir the shared mailbox exists in. This means it also requires filesystem level access to maildirsize file, otherwise the quota updating happens sometimes later when the quota is recalculated. - Dict quota.. I think it'll need a new path for each shared mailbox, which is modifiable by any user. So while your own quota would exist in private/quota/storage, the shared mailboxes' quota would exist in shared/quota/storage. This means that the dict quota needs to be able to know what mailboxes the current user has shared. It also gets a bit tricky to update the quota if mailbox is unshared. The quota could be tracked individually for each mailbox also, but I'm not sure if that's such a great idea either. Perhaps a new quota backend could be implemented to make all this easier. The mail sizes could be tracked in index file, so getting the size of a mailbox could be done simply by reading the value from the index file's header. With mailbox list indexes (in CVS HEAD) they'd all be listed in a single mailbox.list.index file, which would make summing them up really fast. This would require that users don't use private index files for shared mailboxes though. But if the users don't have shell access the shared index files are probably a good idea anyway (at least from performance point of view). ** Symlink shares ** Currently the only way to implement shared mailboxes among users is for administrator to create symlinks. This will be possible in future too with a configuration like: namespace shared { prefix = Shared/ location = maildir:~/Maildir/shared-symlinks:INDEX=~/Maildir/ shared-indexes } The "owner" ACL won't match anyone. So it'll work exactly as it does now.

hi.... i using dovecot 1.0rc26 and i started to configure quota plugin but i think its not working fine. i configure like suggested in http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota in dovecot.conf: protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota imap_quota } plugin { # 10 MB quota limit quota = maildir:storage=10240 } in dovecot-ldap.conf: user_attrs = homeDirectory=home,uidNumber=uid,gidNumber=gid,quotaStorage=quota if a mua send a attach near 9MB i receive a message tell me that the server don't have more space, but if i attach files of 2MB this messages are sending ok, and the cur directory of this user have 15 MB. another question: in ldap entry, the attribute quota are the attibute that A represents the quota on a mailbox, ¿so why i put 10MB as limit? uota = maildir:storage=10240 ¿this value is for all "entryes" or the quota limit is the entry quota limit? i you can see, i not understand how dovecot works with the attribute quota in ldap entry; ¿can anybody explain me this? Dear all, We are running Dovecot (on debian etch, Version 1.0.rc15-2) on 4 Loadbalanced servers using a NFS share for the homedirs. The loadbalancer is using persistant connections (timeout 30min). Lately, IMAP Users (mostly using Thunderbird) reported the following errors: 1. When trying to mark messages as read, nothing happened, message was still displayed as unread. 2. When moving a Directory the client loads for a long time and then hangs. Same was reported to happened when a user tried to open a mail. Hi, I just migrated a server running qmail+vpopmail+maildir to sendmail+dovecot+maildir+vpopmail The migrating is working great thanks to the help from the list and the wiki. I'm now running the infamous problem about duplicating emails, because of pop3 UIDL mismatch. My question is: anyone knows that the pop3_uidl_format string for a vpopmail server? I'm using vpopmail auth and userdb. I noted that when manually issuing a list command to the vpopmail pop3 server, it uses a number that is in the filename for identifying the email. For example if the filename uses: .....,S=1234,... Then the UID is 1234, and 1234 appears in the list command. The LSUB command does not act like LIST when provided with an empty mask argument. LIST responds with the hierarchy delimiter: * LIST (\Noselect) "." "" OK List completed. whereas LSUB doesn't return anything useful: OK Lsub completed. RFC 3501 doesn't specify what LSUB should do in this case, but Courier IMAP has LSUB act like LIST. The attached patch modifies imap/cmd-list.c to make Dovecot do the same. Why do I care about LSUB? I'm using a hack for Apple Mail that replaces its LIST command with LSUB (something like what's described here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php? story=20040407062603804), to prevent it from syncing public folders from the Exchange server at the office. The hack replaces _all_ LISTs with LSUBs, including the LIST "" "" Mail.app sends to discover the hierarchy delimiter. Since dovecot doesn't give it any information in response to LSUB "" "", Mail.app defaults to using "/" as a delimiter, which means that trying to access a subfolder only results in an "Invalid mailbox name" error. While this isn't really a bug in Dovecot, it's not inconceivable that other people than me could be affected by this problem (macosxhints.com has a substantial readership). It's also tricky to diagnose, especially since the "Invalid mailbox name" message doesn't include the invalid mailbox name, so any bug reports you get are likely to eventually be filed under "crazy [Mac] users". In fact, while Googling to figure out why Dovecot wasn't working for me, I came across at least one poster to this mailing list who had discovered that Mail.app was using "/" as a delimiter. I can't be sure, but I'm guessing that his problem was related to mine. Since the patch is tiny and doesn't hurt performance or make Dovecot do anything that contradicts the IMAP RFC, I hope you'll consider adding it to the official distribution. Eyvind Bernhardsen

Hello Everybody, I would like to use Dovecot on my desktop with imap but before doing the real migration I have some (very simple) questions: - Is there any way to log in with imap automatically ? That is, from localhost without any passwords. - Can Dovecot work with only readable maildirs? I want to avoid accidental e-mail loss, therefore on some maildir folder I have only read permissions. Or shall I use ACLs only? - Is there or Will there be a windows version? (In case I had to use windows.) Thanks for any help. Hello. I've notice a problem with SMTP AUTH in postfix with dovecot. My configuration is based on Postgresql. I've created a function in postgresql which returns password and username and attached it to password_query. Query looks like this password_query = SELECT username_out as username, password_out as password FROM get_password(lower('%n'),lower('%d')); Problem is when get_password returns something like this... vmail=# SELECT username_out as username, password_out FROM get_password(lower(''),lower('')); LOG: statement: SELECT username_out as username, password_out FROM get_password(lower(''),lower('')); LOG: duration: 2.342 ms statement: SELECT username_out as username, password_out FROM get_password(lower(''),lower('')); username | password_out ----------+-------------- | (1 row) It returns 1 empty row.... When this is attached to postfix with smtp auth with such configuration # SMTP AUTH broken_sasl_auth_clients = yes smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtpd_sasl_security_options = noanonymous smtpd_sasl_authenticated_header = yes smtpd_sasl_local_domain = smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot smtpd_sasl_path = private/auth my serwer starts to be open relay... I now that it returns empty string for username and password... so where is the password checked... if I dont send password as a parameter to my function. With this i have a few interesting effects: - - dovecot doesn't use the CONTROL statement and generate a .subscriptions file at the namespace directory. The INDEX statement is used. - - dovecot can work with subdirectories even mbox is used - - I can't work with namespaces under Thunderbird till i have a mbox file manually there. an subscription or construction of a new mbox file isn't possible :-( but this seems like one of the (handling?) bugs of Thunderbird - - Why can't i delete a Folder at an namespace? Dovecot complains "Can't rename mailbox to another storage type". Probably this is only a config issue. - - if i use as the first character for the prefix an # like #Archiv dovecot dosen't recognize the complete prefix statement at this namespace. The output of "dovecot -n" is the same except the prefix statement. I thought # is a legal character? A folder can start with it. Any ideas ?? [Dovecot] bug? ldap auth CRAM-MD5

Hello list, our users are authenticated against ldap-server. anything works fine... dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<xxx>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured but now we want to use secure passwords and not only plain over ssl. so we configured dovecot to use cram-md5 and configured the ldap-server with CRAM-MD5 passwords. as client we used thunderbird 2.0 and a webfrontend called roundcube. that does not work, because the server gives... dovecot: auth(default): ldap(xxx,127.0.0.1): Password mismatch then we tried to use DIGEST-MD5. we changed the ldap password to the created one with dovecotpw. but this doesnt work too. thunderbird requests CRAM-MD5 and not DIGEST-MD5. so the log says: dovecot: auth(default): password(xxx,127.0.0.1): Requested CRAM-MD5 scheme, but we have only DIGEST-MD5 imap-login: Aborted login: user=<xxx>, method=CRAM-MD5 after that we changed the password back to CRAM-MD5, but we mad the failure not to delete the DIGEST-MD5 value. so the users had 2 passwords set... {CRAM-MD5}e02d374fde0dc75a17a557039a3a5338c7743304777dccd376f332bee68d2cf6 {DIGEST-MD5}358aefa044c08e6c19711c8117714fb0 password is "test" in both cases. on the next try we start thunderbird it works. i dont know why and the log of dovecot says... auth(default): ldap(xxx,127.0.0.1): Multiple password values not supported imap-login: Login: user=<xxx>, method=CRAM-MD5, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured user was logged in using CRAM-MD5. it's not nice but it works. anyone have an idea why? because of apache-module to auth against ldap and apache doesnt support nor CRAM-MD5 or DIGEST-MD5 we have set the password third time using MD5. So every user has three same passwords with different encryptions. Not nice - but it works. But what can we do to change this. Hi, now that a lot off software is updated e.g. RedHat EL and dovecot got finaly final :-) we plan to upgrade our mailserver from RHEL4 dovecot 0.99 to RHEL5 with dovecot 1.0rc15 - the rpms provided by Red Hat. I've read the upgrading Dovecot manual from here http://wiki.dovecot.org/UpgradingDovecot, but yust to get things right I'd like to ask some questions: Simply spoken, we use the basic default dovecot-config, mbox format and imaps/pop3s. So will there be any big trouble to just use the most default settings of the 1.0 config file? Or which options are compleatly different? hello, first of all I want to say thanks to Timo for Dovecot 1.0. We've been running it in production at the company where I work and we're very pleased with it. Good job! One thing that we were wondering about today is if we can disable a certain protocol depending on the mailbox. So for example: user A can access via pop3s and imap, user B can only access via pop3, user C can use only imaps, and so on. thanks! armijn PS: am I assuming correctly that IMAP namespaces will make it possible to have shared IMAP folders with Dovecot? For lack of a better name, we are interested in a feature where one could get a notice out to all Dovecot users as quickly as possible, possibly without going through an MTA even. Given a message and a list of userids we could certainly do a mailing on the MDA server itself going through both Postfix and Dovecot LDA. However, we were wondering what other options we might have in Dovecot. For example, would it be possible to place the message into some file which Dovecot periodically checks for, and if the file exists, either present it to the user as a new message, or automatically deliver it at that time via Dovecot LDA? -- Steven F. [Dovecot] SASL Problems

Hello all, I seem to be having a problem with SASL. It doesn't seem to work with Outlook. Upon searching a bit, I found that I need to enable "login" for auth mechanisms. However, when I do that, (after I stop and start dovecot and postfix), and then try to use SMTP auth using Outlook, it causes postfix to crash. It works fine with Thunderbird still though. Any ideas as to what the cause might be? I'm using Dovecot 1.0.0 and Postfix 2.3.5. Thanks, Phillip

Hi all, I have recently migrated my mail from courier-imap to dovecot. In doing so, I finally configured mutt to connect to imaps (SSL). In the end I got it all working. I then sat back and thought: "I kinda don't understand the SSL/TLS part even though it works". And I hate setting stuff up and not truely understanding the mechanics of it. So I started to write about it and am stuck. Can those that _understand_ mutt+ssl have a read of what I wrote to myself and give me your $00.02 worth (corrections etc). Trying to explain mutt+ssl and getting it all wrong --------------------------------------------------- * mutt(with openssl support built in) initiates with a "SSL-Client-Hello" to SSL on port 993 i.e. mutt's capabilities (algorithms, SSL version etc). * dovecot:993 compares mutt's CipherSuites with its own. Of the CipherSuites mutt and dovecot have in common, dovecot:993 chooses the _most_ secure algorithm. * Dovecot:993 will then tell mutt what it has decided to use and assigns a Unique session ID. From now on all communication is via this ID. * Now that the CipherSuite is set between mutt and dovecot, dovecot sends its SSL certificate to mutt [/usr/local/share/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem]. mutt then uses dovecot's corresponding public key [/usr/local/share/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem] to verify that the ceritificate is authentic. * once mutt has verified that the certificate is authentic ... and here I got unstuck. [Dovecot] deliver failing to execute sendmail (sieve)

I have apparently done something to mess up my test installation, as deliver's attempts to send messages now fail with the following error: deliver(user(a)example.com): execv() failed: No such file or directory In these cases, I have sieve rules trying to send messages. It had been working though, and I've tried going through all the changes I made yesterday (related to dictionary quota debugging) to find what could be wrong, but no luck so far. So, I was hoping for suggestions. Basically, deliver seems to not know where sendmail is. I have sendmail_path set in dovecot.conf (never changed that), yet when deliver tries to pull the location via deliver_set->sendmail_path, it's just returning an empty string. If I hard-code the location in smtp-client.c, it works again. Any ideas?

I can set up and access a dovecot pop3 account using outlook express fine. I can telnet into it fine. However, GFI FaxMaker is failing to log in. I assisted a client in switching his web site, including email from one server (FreeBSD) which was using Cyrus to a Redhat 4.0 server using dovecot version 0.99.11 Here's the listing of dovecot -n: dovecot -n Usage: dovecot [-F] [-c <config file>] Fatal: Unknown argument: -n The GFI Faxmaker polls the pop3 account every minute so we're getting a lot lf these messages in the log file: Apr 19 19:51:28 server name pop3-login: Aborted login [::ffff:<ip address here>] Again, I can telnet in to the account from that server. I verified all the log in credentials are correct but it still is failing to log in. Any ideas?

I use: log_path = /var/log/maillog info_log_path = /var/log/maillog And into /var/log are: maillog maillog.1 maillog.2 maillog.3 Now when log files are rotating at 04:00 (maillog > maillog.1) dovecot still keeps login into maillog.1 and not into maillog, where sendmail, etc writes logs. The only solution I did found, is adding into /etc/logrotate.d/syslog command to restart dovecot: /var/log/maillog { postrotate /usr/bin/killall -HUP syslogd /etc/rc.d/init.d/dovecot restart >/dev/null 2>&1 endscript } Any other solution? -- Mart

Hello dovecot users, I have updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to fix the currently known small problems with the protocol implementation. It is designed for rc28, but also compiles cleanly with the current cvs branch_1_0. Change Log V4 ------------- - Added managesieve_implementation_string setting to the managesieve configuration. This can be used to customize the default "IMPLEMENTATION" capability response (as requested by John Peacock). - Denied ANONYMOUS login until proper support is implemented - Fixed problem with authenticate command regarding continued responses. In V3 only initial response would work. Problem was caused by rc2 -> rc28 upgrade. One of the clear reasons why code duplication is a very bad idea. - Fixed readlink bug as indicated by Timo: return value of readlink can also be -1. - Fixed bug in the regular file rescue code, as introduced in the previous version. Used stat instead of lstat. This caused the symlink to be rescued subsequently in the next activation, thus still overwriting the initially rescued script. This patch still includes (yet another) instance of the CMU Sieve source, as explained in one of my previous e-mails (http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-July/015016.html) It can be downloaded at: http://sinas.rename-it.nl/~sirius/dovecot-1.0.rc28-MANAGESIEVE-v4.diff.gz A design related README is located at src/managesieve after applying the patch. [Dovecot] Duplicate E-mail Problem

Hello all, Definitely congrats on the 1.0.0 release! Anyway, I'm having a problem, that may or may not be related to Dovecot. Specifically, duplicate (and sometimes triplicate) emails are appearing. These emails have exactly the same queue ID, so its not that they were sent multiple times. These dup emails do not show up to me ever. Postfix is being used as the SMTP, and it hands it over to procmail. I set up procmail's verbose logging feature for that user and on the duplicate emails that he receives, it shows only ONE write to a file for that specific subject of email. Tonight / this morning I'll be tracking down to see if this duplicate for sure happens in IMAP. Note: Its possible that part of the problem is he leaves two IMAP clients open at the same time (Netscape I think). I'm going to verify that with him. Any ideas? I'm NOT trying to blame Dovecot, I'm just trying to explore options. Right now its looking fairly bad for Dovecot though....I mean, what else is there after the mail is delivered to the appropriate place in the mailbox? I'm not expecting to release v1.0.1 anytime soon, unless someone's been sitting on a major bug just waiting for v1.0 to be released. :) People wanting new features should start testing the upcoming v1.1. http://dovecot.org/nightly/ contains now snapshots from CVS HEAD. It already has tons of new features. I've been using it myself for half a year, so it should be mostly stable too. I'll write a separate mail about this later.

Hey, This may be a dumb question... I'm trying to set up 1.0 with a static userdb, and I'm getting stuck. I have: userdb static { args = uid=500 gid=500 home=/domains/%d/%n } When I attempt to log in as, say, kyle(a)memoryhole.net (via telnet, so I *know* I'm logging in as that user), the debug log says that it thinks my home directory is "/domains//kyle". I even tried, just to check what might be going on: args = uid=500 gid=500 home=/domains/%u/%d/%n It then thought my home directory was "/domains/kyle//kyle". Can anyone help me? I've configured the lazy_expunge plugin exactly like it says on the wiki. I can't seem to configure Mulberry to find the new namespaces. Any hints? I notice that the wiki says to use / as the separator. Mulberry has a setting for this, and the default is '.'. Leaving this as '.' in Mulberry and / in dovecot seems to work fine. (But I still can't access the .EXPUNGED or other namespaces.) Another page on the wiki says that the default separator for maildir is '.'. Why does the lazy_expunge page suggest using '/'? I'm very confused about namespaces. -frank

Hi there, I got a daily cron (rdate to local time server) job wich adjusts time and which constantly gives me headache. Every day my dovecot suicides with: "dovecot: Time just moved backwards by 11 seconds. This might cause a lot of problems, so I'll just kill myself now." Of course my onboard clock is constantly off by more than 5 secs. I don't want to abandon time synchronization and I want to use dovecot. Maybe a -HUP signal would do? [Dovecot] keeping indexes in tmpfs

While doing some testing with converting accounts while simulating incoming mail load (no other pop/imap processes going but 4 processes converting users), we found that we were maxing out the local disk in the server with the index activity. To find out that it was the index activity, I mounted a tmpfs for dovecot to keep indexes on, and the system load dropped from 70 to 3 :) Anyway, Timo and others, do you have any thoughts about keeping indexes on a tmpfs partition? I realize the obvious issues with this: running out of space, and the fact that the partition is lost on reboot. However, we plan to run a cluster of these servers anyway, where we will keep domains/accounts going to a particular server but fail over to one of the others in case of an outage. Recreating the indexes seems pretty trivial when writing to tmpfs anyway, plus we could copy the indexes to disk (restore after reboot) in the case of planned outages... unplanned outages result in another server rebuilding them all anyway. So, I'm looking for non-obvious issues we may have with this approach. I need to do more testing to see how much memory we would actually need to feasibly keep the indexes there, but otherwise is there a good reason not to do this?

[Dovecot] Different classes of user

Hello list! Only recently joined, please excuse me if this is a stupid question. I'd like to have 2 classes of user: those with shell accounts, and those without. They'll all have "real" accounts, for which the password can be checked with PAM. I've set up SSL too. What I want to arrange is for users with shell accounts not to be succeed in logging in to Dovecot without using TLS/SSL. I'll have to allow unencrypted logins (for non-shell users), but I want to reject/refuse such a login from someone with a shell account. I've already made my exim do this, with the following logic in my authenticator there: if (pam auth ok) and ((tls) or (user's shell not listed in /etc/shells)) I haven't worked out how to make Dovecot do this, yet. So far I just tried using * as the PAM service name, in the hope that not only would pop3 or imap get passed through, but pop3s and imaps might, and I had a line in my /etc/pam.d/imap and pop like this: auth required pam_succeed_if.so debug shell notin /bin/bash:/bin/sh which worked, but unfortunately also got used for imapS logins. Then I realised this was likely to be the wrong thing anyway, because it would presumably only cover IMAPS on port 993, and not IMAP+TLS on the usual port 143. So I've had a go but got it wrong. What should I do to get it right? Cheers, John.

Hello, I have upgraded to Dovecot 1.0.0, I saw a lot of error in the dovecot.log file: Timeout while waiting for lock for transaction log file /fs/example.com/joewong/Maildir/dovecot.index.log where /fs is a NFS mounted directory. [Dovecot] Maildir, INDEX, and folders

I'm reading the wiki et el. regarding indexes, but can't come up with a coherent answer to the setup and what will happen. I want to take the indexes and move them off of NFS (~/Maildir) and place in /var/spool/dovecot/indexes, but not have to hand create everything (user homes, mail folders) So, I create a parent folder /var/spool/dovecot/indexes that has the appropriate permissions for writing by all users/dovecot. If I then set: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/spool/dovecot/indexes/%1u/%u ...will the dovecot daemon(s) automagically create (A) the parent user folders (i.e. .../indexes/t/tengel/)(1), and (B) the necessary subfolders for all the child folder indexes? (i.e. .../tengel/.Lists.Dovecot/) Most of the doc info seems to revolve around moving your indexes if you use mbox, I'm a little fuzzy on what happens with Maildir when you attempt this. thanks! -te (1) in our setup, initially user's home folders are created on an admin server -> NFS that is not the mail server, so Dovecot needs to create the home & index folders on it's own at runtime. -- Troy Engel | Systems Engineer Fluid, Inc | http://www.fluid.com

[Dovecot] LDA problem

Hi, I am using dovecot deliver as lda for sendmail. My problem is that when a user account is over quota, deliver program sends message in the logs, but the message is not bounced back to sender informing that their is disk quota problem at the recipient side. Further message remains in the mail queue. Details are below. Plz suggest how to figure out the problems: 1. Message should be removed from queue if quota is exceeded 2. Sender should get a proper response. In passdb-pam.c, I found some bits about const with some PAM data types. Rather than check for each vendor of PAM, better to check for actual const usage ... some vendors have changed const-ness between releases. Also, actually testing constness is great for supporting new implementations that may come out. [Dovecot] Moving Maildir files from multiple Dovecot installs

I currently have Dovecot running on a SuSE SLES 10 mail server with postfix as the MTA and a number of real linux users. I have postfix delivering to Maildir records. We are going to convert to a virtual user/domain system with PostfixAdmin. I have checked out all of our settings and they appear to work well except for a problem with authenticating against mySQL using MD5-Crypt; plaintext works well however. My question is how to transfer the maildir files from the real users Maildirs to the created virtual users. When creating a mail user PostfixAdmin will create the maildir directory. Once this is created can I simply rsync the complete old directory including the dovecot files to the new mailbox? Sorry for the newbie question. [Dovecot] 2 mysql dbs or 2 types of encryption

Just upgrading to 1.0.0 and I'm trying to switch from PAM (using pam-mysql) to a direct mysql query from dovecot, and I've got both md5crypt and crypt passwords in a password db. http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/PasswordSchemes seems to indicate that I have to pick 1, but that is per auth-worker, right? So, I created 2 auth workers using 2 dovecot-sql config files specifying different default encryption schemes and it seems to work. Is there any problem with this, other than a small bit of overhead for 2 queries if the first doesn't hit? Thanks, Ken Anderson Pacific.Net
