This minor problem still exists in the current version. http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-December/018251.html It's my own fault, I kept meaning to test one of the latest versions before the 1.0 release and never got around to it. [Dovecot] Convert mbox to maildir

Hello all Ive installed a new Server with dovecot, started using it and had no problems until I noticed that I couldnt create sub-sub-folders on my imap account, Ive read for the past two days info on how to convert and I know now that instead of using mbox I need to user maildir, the issue is now to convert mbox to maildir, on the various searches I did, I found the convert wiki page (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Convert) followed the instructions there and no luck, I always end up with an error: Eopen(/.temp.chihuahua.intranet.acorporativa.com.mx.21409.1089e702ee50f317) failed: Permission denied Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 If I remove the line convert_mail = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u it starts correctly but I see no e-mails and no conversion takes place, since its a production server Ive reverted all changes and had to add a line (mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u) to be able to see my e-mails again. Ive tried stopping dovecot, making the changes and trying dovecot n to see the configuration, but with the same results. Any ideas on what Ive been doing wrong? They shouldn't anyway break anything, so here's one more day for you people to find out about any bugs. One thing that I'm a bit concerned about is the addition of #define LDAP_DEPRECATED. I know it fixes crashes with OpenLDAP 2.3 + 64bit systems, but I hope it doesn't break compiling with some old versions or non-OpenLDAP libraries.. - LDAP, auth_bind=no: Don't crash if doing non-plaintext ldap passdb lookup for unknown user. This also broke deliver when userdb static was used. - LDAP, auth_bind=yes and userdb ldap: We didn't wait until bind was finished before sending the userdb request, which could have caused problems. - LDAP: Don't break when compiling with OpenLDAP v2.3 library - Convert plugin: Don't create "maildirfolder" file to Maildir root.

[Dovecot] dovecot forward multipart problem

Hi, I experience problems everytime i forward a mail (basically, when forwarding an email containing an attachement). I'm using thunderbird (it does the same with outlook clients) with the forward parameter "as attachement" instead of "inline". (Using the inline parameters works fine). When i forward a mail with attachements (eg a jpeg file), the attachements file is displayed in base64 instead, and is impossible to detach/save. I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc22-1 (debian package) on debian etch, x86 SMP box with maildir format on a ext3 partition. I'm using postfix currently 2.3.4-3, i have tried different version of dovecot (from rc16 i think) and postfix (from 2.2.?) and i suspect the deliver to be the origin of the problem. I think it is the same problem than here http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2006-July/014786.html , my "From" headers are badly duplicated. Could this be fixed before the dovecot 1.0 release ? Hi all. I spent some time testing Dovecot's LDA sieve plugin and found problem with "notify" method. In fact it always returns "generic sieve error"... and thus produces bounce messages like this: ----- Your message was automatically rejected by Dovecot Mail Delivery Agent. The following reason was given: Unknown error ---- Deliver logs error: "generic sieve error", but otherwise server reports "notify" method as supported. The problem is: original code was taken from curys sieve and requires "notifyd", as sieve runs 'chrooted' and can't access external binaries like "sendmail". communications with notifyd is done via socket. Thus I wrote pacth, which ads "notify" functionality to dovecot's sieve plugin, at less "notify:mailto" method. cyrus originally contains null, log and zephyr methods. null and log is useless with dovecot, zephur is cyrus specific... RFC docs says there is 3 available methods SMS, XMPP and MAILTO: ------ method can be an SMS URI [SMS-URI <http://ietfreport.isoc.org/idref/draft-ietf-sieve-notify/#ref-SMS-URI>] containing a phone number, or an XMPP [XMPP <http://ietfreport.isoc.org/idref/draft-ietf-sieve-notify/#ref-XMPP>] URI containing an XMPP identifier [XMPP-URI <http://ietfreport.isoc.org/idref/draft-ietf-sieve-notify/#ref-XMPP-URI>] The supported URI values will be site-specific, but support for the [MailTo <http://ietfreport.isoc.org/idref/draft-ietf-sieve-notify/#ref-MailTo>] method is REQUIRED in order to insure interoperability. If a URI schema is specified that the implementation does not support, the notification MUST cause an error condition. Sieve scripts can check the supported methods using the "valid_notify_method" test to be sure that they only use supported ones, to avoid such error conditions. ------ as SMS-URI and XMPP methods are not included in cyrus sieve version, they are not available in dovecots plugin too. [any ideas, sample code how to implement them?] BUT... WARNING All this will not work if you have "mail_chroot" setting enabled in dovecot.conf; chrooted process can't access required external binaries. DOT USE THIS PLUGIN WITH "mail_chroot" SENTIG ENABLED! Actualy it is not sieve plugin problem only - its LDA problem... it can't send bonce messages, do forwards etc. Question to Timo: Do You have ideas how to fix it? My be disable chroting for LDA at all? or do it "cyrus way" - move all calls to external binaries to sepreate, non chrooted process? [Dovecot] convert plugin created maildirfolder file in root maildir directory

I've noticed that if a user's maildir gets created by deliver or pop/imap without the convert plugin running, the maildir structure is fine (no maildirfolder file). But, if a user gets converted, there is a maildirfolder file in the user's base maildir directory. As far as I can tell, that doesn't cause any problems, but I just wanted to mention it. I've looked at the code for a while but didn't find why it behaves differently.

Fedora pushed out an update to Dovecot 1.0 rc 28 today. After upgrading, mail isn't delivered to local recipients. I started playing with deliver, and saw a permission error in the logs for dovecot.conf. Under my distro install, /etc/dovecot.conf was installed owner/group root, with only user rw rights. I added "other" read privileges and deliver is happy - is this necessary? -- Daniel

I received this response from a member of the OpenLDAP core team when asking about meaning of the deferred operations I was seeing. Is it possible that this is what I'm seeing, Timo? -Ben --------------------------------------------- I'd note that if your client is performing search + bind on the same connection in an asynchronous manner, then the server behavior as per RFC4511 is undefined, since a server is not supposed to be willing to handle operations intermixed with binds until a bind is concluded. That is, any operation can be multiplexed on a single LDAP connection __except__ binds, which must be serialized. A more appropriate client for that type of operations would need to use at least 2 connections, one for searches and one for binds, and the one for binds should take care of either performing synchronous binds, or in any case to wait for response to a bind before performing another. In case of failure (e.g. timeout) while waiting for bind response, the connection should be trashed (see ldap_unbind_ext(3)) and recreated. This is what is done, for example, by slapd-ldap(5). p. [Dovecot] Dovecot Assertion on mail server with POP3 and LDAP authentication

Running two Fedora 6 systems with all the latest updates as of a week ago. One system is the mail server (sendmail, dovecot), the other is the master (open)LDAP server with the mail server running a slave LDAP instance. The problem I'm having is the client pop3 users are frequently being told their passwords aren't correct by their email clients (Outlook, Eudora). They try again, a couple times and eventually it works. I've seen it on my own account and when I test their accounts, occasionally it just doesn't take the password. I've only had this trouble since I implemented the LDAP authentication. Checking through the server maillog, I see the following entry: Apr 4 08:44:38 msi2 dovecot: auth(default): dovecot-auth: ../../../libraries/liblber/io.c:491: ber_get_next: Assertion `ber->ber_buf == ((void *)0)' failed. Hi List Looks like OpenLDAP 2.3 doesn't define LDAP_DEPRECATED [1] anymore which causes a few warnings in Gentoo [2]. Attached is a patch that re-defines this so that dovecot can continue using simple functions like ldap_bind(). [Dovecot] Convert plugin mbox to maildir has no effect

Convert plugin seems to have no effect with dovecot-1.0.rc26 and my settings. When a user log, maildir creation is successful, but no mbox conversion occur. New incoming mails are dropped into maildir, but I cant access those in Mbox file. [Dovecot] Building Dovecot to link against alternative libldap

I'm running Dovecot on an Ubuntu (Edgy) box. I'd like to link dovecot against the latest stable version of the OpenLDAP libraries instead of the system defaults. I can't really replace the existing libraries as other packages rely on them. If this didn't use libtool, I would be able to influence the runtime linker by manipulating -rpath and -L. I can't seem to figure out how to get this to work with Dovecot's libtool-based build. The system libldap_r.so.2 lives in /usr/lib My libldap_r.so.2.3 lives in /usr/local/lib Anyone have any pointers? -Ben

[Dovecot] Problems with (probably) Dovecot

Hello altogether, I've got Dovecot 0.99 installed on a Suse Linux 9.2 system, together with Postfix. I need to upgrade that server in the near future to new hardware and new versions, but at the moment it would be great, if I could find the solution for the following problem without upgrading. Unfortunately I didn't find a solution in Google. The system has enough memory and disc space, it was running for about 4 or 5 years without problems now. Trying to access my messages on the server via IMAP protocol using Outlook (2000 or 2002 or 2003) leads to an error message "Invalid messageset: xxxxxxxx" (where xxxxxxxx is a changing number). No data is displayed, the headers are not updated. Squirrelmail says, that the messages are not available any more. And Thunderbird joins in with Outlook and also tells me something about an invalid messageset. For some reasons (and some messages, not all) Kontact / Kmail does not give me error message, however, my main system is not a Linux one and therefore I'd like to get that fixed, if possible. Somewhere in Google I found a note about IMAP index files, which may be corrupt and need to be rebuilt, but I didn't find any Index files, I must admit. Any idea how to solve that? [Dovecot] rc31 -> "deferring operation: binding"

I hate to bring up anything that might delay 1.0, but the behavior I'm seeing is rather... weird. I'm running rc31, using "userdb static" and "auth_bind=yes". With rc1 (what I had been running) I would occasionally get some "deferring operation" complaints from LDAP, but very rarely. Every now and then it would start to throw "deferring operation: pending operations" and stop authenticating. Digging through the Changelog indicated you've made considerable updates to the auth_bind code, apparently to eliminate just such problems, so I upgraded. Now I'm running rc31 and my OpenLDAP logs are throwing an error like this every few seconds: Apr 9 19:56:42 swizzle slapd[1626]: connection_input: conn=6696168 deferring operation: binding This appears to happen with around every 3rd or 4th bind request. Sometimes it happens with the anonymous requests, sometimes with the auth bind request. As I understand it, the new auth_bind code is extremely careful about flushing all pending operations before attempting to perform the authentication bind. If that's the case, any idea why OpenLDAP is deferring the binding operations so frequently? So far it hasn't caused any login problems, but it's quite disconcerting given the expected behavior described in the Changelog. [Dovecot] Moving maildir folders between different RC dovecot machines

Is it ever necessary to delete any of the dovecot files when moving between machines from different RC versions? I read all the RC notes from RC15 to 31 and didn't see any notes about this, but wanted to be completely sure. Have some domains that I need to move from a RC15 machine to a RC29 machine. Also later this month we plan to ugprade from RC15 to Release 1.. when it is out shortly.

Hi, I've just installed dovecot on a RHEL 4 server. I'm using postfix as my MTA. Everything seems to work well when I have a home dir for the user, but I don't like to clutter up my /home/ dir with dirs for users that will never use them (other than mail). Is there no way to just use /var/mail/user (I think in mbox format?). I have no interest at this time of using IMAP, this is purely for POP3. Thanks Nick

[Dovecot] error creating subfolders

I'm running rc31 and I've come across a weird little error in creating subfolders that's only apparent in a specific situation. I recently moved our entire campus from UW to dovecot, and as part of that migration, and following the wiki, I have some namespaces: ##default namespace namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } #for backwards compatibility: namespace private { separator = / prefix = mail/ hidden = yes } namespace private { separator = / prefix = ~/mail/ hidden = yes } which absorb the typical configuration previously used wherein the email client had the imap server folder set to "mail/" or similar, and which still remains on most clients. All of this works perfectly fine, and all users see their mail folders properly. Currently everyone is still in mbox format, and as far as I can tell, users can also create email folders without problems (ie single files in the file system containing messages). But one user discovered that it does not work to create folder containers (ie directories in the filesystem) that would contain other email folders, no matter how one appended / or checked the right box (or having me add the tb-extra-mailbox-sep client workaround -- they're using Thunderbird). Their client config still had mail/ as the server imap directory, and when I cleared that out, then everything worked perfectly. So it's a bit weird that everything works fine with the namespaces, except the one operation of creating the subfolder. I've compiled the latest release candidate of dovecot and I am encountering a strange problem when mail is delivered. I have my installation configured to use Maildir. When messages arrive, they are placed in the correct user directory, but the ownership for individual messages is set to root and the group set to mail. This prevents these messages from being displayed in my client. The error message logged is as follows: dovecot: Apr 08 13:11:08 Error: IMAP(mel): open(/home/mel/Maildir/cur/_d2F.eyKGGB.mjolnir:2,) failed: Permission denied The file permissions for the message are as follows: -rw------- 1 root mail 1805 2007-04-08 13:02 _AqG.VxTGGB.mjolnir:2, I also noticed that the log file in the root Maildir also has the same ownership assigned (not the user's uid/gid). Unless something has changed in dovecot.conf, this behavior is somewhat unexpected. [Dovecot] "TLS handshake" errors, frozen IMAP

Another new issue has cropped up with my rc1 -> rc31 upgrade: This morning, right around the typical morning email surge, Dovecot stopped accepting new IMAP connections. I didn't get a chance to do much troubleshooting and a restart of Dovecot fixed it. Back a year ago, I asked what the key DC executables where that I had to bring from my compile host to the production imap server to install or upgrade DC. I was told: dovecot, dovecot.conf, dovecot-auth, imap & imap-login I recently got DC up and running unencrypted and that worked fine. Then I tried to enable SSL and the logs said I was missing /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/ssl-build-param, which I located in the build tree under ./src/master. I am using the base AIX Unix authentication with NIS. I saw some stuff about AFS maildirs awhile back, and dovecot seems happy being running via ssh from offlineimap with :INDEX=/tmp/dovecot-%u, but what I'd really like to know is has anyone got a functional dovecot installation with AFS and GSSAPI sasl support that gets the correct users's AFS tokens? Hi Timo, First, thanks very much for dovecot, you are doing a fine thing making it open source, and it is working very well here. It would be helpful to me if there were more logging options available. For example, I would like to see a record of each email deleted, with the filename (if maildir), and size in the log. I haven't been able to find much documentation on logging at all. Have I just not been looking in the right place? If so, I would appreciate any enlightenment offered. Thanks in advance, - Richard

I get the errmsg: auth|security:err|error dovecot-auth PAM: load_modules: can not open module /usr/lib/security/pam_prohibit That file is 444 root:security What is wrong here? Also, I'm using plain UINX authentication, but PAM keeps trying to run. How do I turn it off? First off, just want to say Dovecot is great! We have been using it for several months now in a fairly large installation with only a few problems. We are running 1.0.rc28 on three servers with 3 Horde/IMP boxes talking to Dovecot. The user's home dirs are located on an NFS server and the indexes are stored in their Maildirs. I have mmap_disable=yes and lock_method=dotlock in dovecot.conf. We have not implemented anything to direct users to the same server as is recommended per the Wiki. I have been trying to avoid this, as the best way I could see to do it would be to put in an IMAP proxy (Perdition?) and I just wanted to keep it as simple as possible if I could. The problems we have been having are due to dovecot.*.lock files not being cleaned up. This issue presents itself as a user not being able to login via the webmail interface. I have attached the output of 'strace -p pid' of this IMAP session, which shows that it appears to be in a loop (statting the lock file?) for 244 seconds (seems to be consistent, tried it three different times) before it continues and gives me the INBOX. This happens for every subsequent command as well (Fetch, etc.) Once I log out, the lock files are not removed. Has anyone implemented a script to block IPs which are attacking on POP3 ports using dovecot logs to indicate repetitive failed login attempts? sshblack does this nicely for ssh (port 22) attacks by monitoring the /var/log/secure file. I am considering rewriting this to POP3 port (110), but if it has already been done, I sure don't need the practice. Thanks!

[Dovecot] chdir failed, but requires group permissions

Using Debian Etch package dovecot-common and dovecot-pop3d, based on 1.0.rc15-2 My home directories are set up with 770 permissions as follows: /home/<group name>/<user name> Using this method, users MUST be a member of the appropriate group to access their own home directory. If they are not, they can't chdir past /home. This appears to kill dovecot with a "chdir failed with id xxxx: Permission Denied" error, immediately after authenticating a pop3 user. I was able to make a user the owner of the <group name> directory, and dovecot succeeded But when the <group name> directory is owned by <group name>:<group name> and the user is a member of the group - the process dies. Any suggestions?

[Dovecot] SQL mail storage

I wasted some time yesterday and today implementing a SQL storage plugin. It seems to be working, but: - Saving new messages is done in a regular INSERT statement, which is bad. PostgreSQL has at least this COPY TO command which could be used instead. - It breaks in stress testing - It's not that well optimized. Especially it could support caching some commonly requested fields (same as dovecot.index.cache file). - Currently works only with PostgreSQL. Nothing is committed to CVS yet. I'm not sure if I should even do that. I'm not sure if those lib-sql API changes were that great. Maybe there's a better way.. If you're interested in trying it, you need the latest CVS HEAD sources and these patches: http://dovecot.org/patches/sql-storage-changes.diff http://dovecot.org/patches/sql-storage-plugin.diff The SQL schema is in src/plugins/mail-sql/schema.sql file. Hi there, I'm using the latest Thunderbird & Dovecot. I'm trying to setup either pop3s or imaps. The plain versions of the protocols both work fine for me, even with the TLS option selected in Thunderbird. But when I try to use the ssl versions, my client does not negotiate - it just time's out. Hi folks, I've poked through the archives and google and have not seen how do do this. Is it possible to virtualize ALL emails on a system? That is, I want delivery only to e.g. /var/mail/vmail/domain.tld/user/Maildir/, and for authentication & userdb to: 1) Try /etc/passwd, and if someone is there, automatically append the "default" domain, otherwise, 2) Authenticate off a mysql db or similar. Is this kind of "fallthrough" user lookup and auth. possible with dovecot? I assume the delivery can probably be done by just telling postfix to use dovecot as the local delivery agent. [Dovecot] Inbox inside the mail location

I recently had some scary experience with the Inbox being stored in the default /var/mail dir, and I believe it would be a better idea to keep the Inbox next to any other mail in the users $HOME. mail_location = mbox:~/.mail:INBOX=~/.mail/INBOX This is what I used for a quick test, and actually would love to use in production soon. Based on the test, it just does exactly what I want. :) However, I'd like to confirm what I see is how it is expected to work. Since the Inbox with this layout is is part of the ~/.mail dir just like any other mbox file (or subdir), I am concerned with getting a "second" Inbox mail folder in the client. I did not, which is great. So, is this expected behavior, and the Inbox mbox file actually being the Inbox and only the Inbox? Will it always be excluded from the list of IMAP mail folders? Also... Thanks for this great IMAP server! I migrated many moons ago, beginning with some 0.9x version I don't exactly recall, and it just works. Any way I can find out if it's really dovecot that's causing this? I recognize it might not be a dovecot issue, but it's the only hint i've got right now. .tim

Good evening, folks, Well, here at least. ;) I recently found out by accident about support for gzip compressed mbox files. While this is great for archives to keep wasting of space down to a minimum, unfortunately it is read only -- no support for rw access. Is implementing write access by any chance planned for future releases? Now for the spoiler. :) I mentioned, I found out about this feature "by accident", reading the NEWS for RC29. Talking to some guys on IRC I realized I am not the only one who found out about this by the release announcement. However, no one (around) was able to tell me how to use it, though interested too. I couldn't find any info in the docs, and google wasn't helpful either. But another careful look at the security announcement (especially the few words about it being a plugin not commonly used) got me going. So I figured, I'd mention it here -- I'm sure others have been wondering about this themself. And maybe google will pick up this post eventually. Of course, just sticking a gzipped mbox file inside your mail dir doesn't work... Inside the protocol imap section of the configuration, you need to enable the zlib plugin (and maybe set mail_plugin_dir, though the build time default should do). Basically, that's it -- once this is done, the naive first attempt magically works. ;) mail_plugins = zlib Of course, restart dovecot. Also, the gzipped mbox file needs to have a .gz suffix. This works for mbox files gzipped in one fell swoop just as well as incrementally concatenated single gzipped mails, as served by some mailing list servers as archives. Keep in mind though, that these archives are read only. With one notable exception: Read/Unread status is being updated and saved, as it will be stored in the index files in this case. Hi ! I am still a bit annoyed with the way that Sieve plugin handles multiple delivery into the same folder. For reference : http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-January/019029.html Summary : When a same message (same message-id) is to be delivered twice into the same mailbox, it is delivered twice while I think that the second one should be discarded. Here are a few test cases : - you subscribe to a few mailing lists on topic "X" and deliver all mails from those mailing lists in the same folder. You get twice the mails that are crossposted. - you subscribe to one mailing list and read it regulary so you don't care of receiving messages from this mailing list (you are in Cc when someone answers) in your INBOX. You match on To or Cc to put everything in the same folder. You get messages twice when you are put personally in Cc. - you place a forward from one account to two of your accounts (one is keeping backup, the other don't but delivers faster). You receive all messages twice. With procmail, I handle those (real) cases with formail. I can't with Sieve. I don't see any interest in receiving the same message twice into the same mailbox. Is it possible to maintain a list of recent message-id and mailbox couples to avoid to deliver again a message to the same mailbox ? -- Terminate input by end-of-file or marker, not by count. - The Elements of Programming Style (Kernighan & Plauger)

Help! I just noticed this error this morning, we have been getting a lot of these in rc28 and rc29, not in rc27 or before: Apr 6 07:22:52 karst dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.error] IMAP(jaearick): mbox file /var/mail/j/jaearick was modified while we were syncing, check your locking settings Pine coughed up an internal error, no core dump, and dovecot basically doubled the size of my mailbox by duplicating all of my messages again. What changed with file locking between rc27 and rc28 to cause this? How to fix? My setup: dovecot server is Solaris 10, with ZFS for home directories (where index files go). The mail server is also Solaris 10, /var/mail NFS mounted to the dovecot server (NFSv4, yes lockd is running). The /var/mail filesystem on the mail server is also ZFS. Hi all, I'm new to the list, so ... hello everybody :-) Let's go to the point... I'm implementing quota over imap support in my mail server, so since a number of days I'm tring to upgrade to the new 1.x version (debian sarge) ... After having a number of troubles using the debian backport packege I am now using the -rc28 package that I have built by myself... I installed libmysqlclient14 and compiled dovecot with the following configure options: ./configure --with-ssl=openssl \ --with-mysql \ --disable-ipv6 \ --with-cyrus-sasl2 \ --with-gssapi \ --with-deliver \ --host=$(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE) \ --build=$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE) \ --prefix=/usr \ --sysconfdir=/etc/dovecot \ --libexecdir=\$${prefix}/lib \ --localstatedir=/var \ --mandir=\$${prefix}/share/man \ --infodir=\$${prefix}/share/info \ --with-moduledir=\$${prefix}/lib/dovecot/modules as taken from the sarge-backports debian package and after having removed pgsql, ldap and ipv6 support, as I don't need them... The imap over quota seem to work perfectly, since I can see quota info in IMAP clients (and via telnet) the only thing I can't make work is the dict: storage for quota info!! It seems the dict{ .. } section in the dovecot.conf file is *totally* ignored: dict { quotadict = mysq:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-quota.conf } As you can see I have a typo in the driver name, but no error nor error message is given ... I followed the wiki instruction about Quota/Dict and I have created the necessary table ... that is not filled of course .. Anybody can tell me if may be a compilation problem, a configuration one or a bug in the current dovecot release ?? Keep getting this error within Squirrelmail (and other clients) on one particular user's mailbox file: ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: SELECT "INBOX.Backup" Reason Given: Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file I've snipped the first and last message off of it, still no love. mailserver# cat FILE | od -c | less 0000000 F r o m p r o m o t i o n s @ 0000020 e m e s s a g e . c i s c o . c So apparently there isn't a control character in the first message that'd be causing this either. I am trying to use dovecot. I've got a GFS2 shared volume on two servers with dovecot running on both. On one server at a time, it works. The test I am trying is to attach two mail programs (MUA) via IMAPS (Thunderbird and Evolution as it happens). I've attached one mail program to each IMAPS server. I am trying to move emails around in one program (from folder to folder), and then checking it on the other program. I'm testing in effect how it would work if my users log on twice and end up on different servers. We have dovecot on a pop/imap server working as a proxy to dovecot on the backend storage servers. This is working fine, but the difficulty is that if I use, for example, avelsieve in squirrelmail, it doesn't know where to connect. I imagine the same problem would exist with sieve-capable mail clients such as KMail, especially since the outside world isn't allowed to connect directly to the storage servers. [Dovecot] GSS/Kerb5, Solaris 10, how to build?

Gang, I've been trying to build rc29 under Solaris 10 using either "--with-gssapi" or Kerberos 5 ticket usage. I'm trying to figure out how to set up fetchmail on another S10 box to do IMAP fetches from dovecot without having to enter a password. No matter what configure option I try, I get Building with GSSAPI support ........ : no at the end of the configure. I searched the list archives and I see some discussion from Dan Price about Solaris 11 builds. Is gssapi supposed to work with Solaris 10? Advice please? My dovecot server is a Kerberos 5 client of Active Directory, with PAM configured to do TGT exchanges. I can login to the system with my AD password, ssh to other Kerb clients without having to type in passwords -- Kerberos works at the OS level. Jeff Earickson Colby College

[Dovecot] changing fs separator for maildir (suggestions?)

Since we're migrating from an existing system that allows periods in folder names, I believe we must continue to allow them. So, I am deciding what to use as the separator instead. Right now, I'm leaning towards the backtick (`), since I don't think I have ever used it unless I was trying to execute an external command in some code. So, can anybody think of reasons not to use it, or have a better idea?

Well, I'm not paying for it. And I've managed to fix the comedy stability I've come across so far, but you're right- I haven't really loaded the system up yet. My rationale is that I want a filesystem I can share between several servers, reducing the points of failure as far as I can down. We've got a large iSCSI SAN we've already bought for other projects, and I'd like to use that for our storage. So using NFS, I'd have to have another server in front of my SAN that act as an NFS server (presuambly as a single point of failuire), and the mail servers as NFS clients. I'd rather have the servers talk to the SAN directly. Besides, NFS never really works for me, but I'm sure I could overcome that. Anyway, I don't think it's a GFS problem so far. Hello funkypunky drunky, on AIX dovecot plugins (which are shared objects = .so) are a little bit problematic. It is not enough to activate run time linking by using -brtl and make the main program (dovecot) to be able to use shared objects. When a share object does function calls back into the main program, all these functions (=symbols) in dovecot have to be explicitly exported. Otherwise you see "signal 11" or so. Because this is very fiddly, there is a linker flag -bexpall to export all symbols of the main program (dovecot)... but this does seemingly not work with symbols defined in static libraries (.a). While dovecot build creates static libraries to keep the linker command line small, but does *not* generate export files (.exp) containing the libraries globals symbols, the compile time linker does not known anything about them. I think, if dovecot build would use libtool to create the libraries, libtool would export the libraries symbols to fix this. And this is, what my script does. It looks on the compiler command line for library file (.a) and exports all global symbols to an .exp file. The paths of these .exp files are appended to the original compiler command line and so -bexpall knows about the globale symbols defined in the libraries and is able to export them. I don't know if this information is useful for you, because you're using gcc. But if you are using AIX ld (instead of gnu ld) you have to deal with this problem, I think. Several attempts to support both Mac and PCs keep failing. In my latest attempt I used the following settings: #courier-imap compatibility/Thunderbird namespace private { separator = . prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes } For MAC OS Mail.app namespace private { separator = / prefix = INBOX/ inbox = no hidden= yes } This last attempt was based on the suggestion of Timo Sirainen, on the Mac settings. The PC settings were the defaults I got from the sample config and have always worked for PC clients. The new setup with namespace private worked for Mac clients, but got the following error for a number of users in both Outlook and thunderbird. Unable to display the folder. The folder 'Inbox' cannot contain items. This is most likely a limitation of your IMAP server. In order to create a folder that can contain items, be sure to append / to its name as you create it. If we closed the client, all subsequent times the "folder Inbox cannont contain items" error would come up. doing a TCPdump showed us that the difference was that the first time that Outlook connects it issued a "Select" command, but all other times it did not. Someone suggested to take out prefix = INBOX. Would that help? I don't want to cause problems for the vast majority of our PC users while trying to fix the Mac clients. Even though Mac users are a minority of our users, it is extremely problematic for us not to be able to support them because many domains may have a handfull of such clients.. so we basically will not be able to host a large number of domains in dovecot machines, just because of a handfull of Mac clients. Currently using Dovecot r27, but have been having this same problem since r15.

When dovecot works - it works great, and I thank you. But it seems like every time I setup a new server, it's a challenge getting the IMAP logins to work reliably. The changelog's top comment is stamped 2007-01-05, 18:48 if that helps nail down the version (I'm using a Debian/Ubuntu package). Both non-SSL and SSL logins have the problem. This time around I'm using LDAP authentication - and once I figured out how it worked beautifully. The problem is from time to time - with no particular consistency - I lose the ability to log in. A "telnet localhost 143" on the server works with a Dovecot response, then followed with a "01 LOGIN <user> <password>" results in a long delay, then a timeout, with no log files affected. We do some routine logfile (syslog) gathering and analysis. I've been looking at extending this to parse the syslog output of dovecot. Hmmm... Perhaps something like: dovecot: subprogram: event, key1=value1, key2=value2 ... where: "subprogram" is "{imap,pop,deliver,...}"; "event" is "{login,disconnected, ...}; and one of the "key=value" will usually be "user=<uuuu>". Hello all, I am currently setting up a new mail server with Qmail, OpenLDAP and Dovecot in CentOS-4.4. Qmail version is 1.03, OpenLDAP is 2.3 and Dovecot version is dovecot-1.0-3_50.rc27(RPM). I have successfully installed and tested it. But I have two issues with the current setup: #1. I am using dovecot LDA and configured the OpenLDAP such that the mail be delivered to the virtual users through a script. This script is saved in /var/qmail/bin/deliver.sh and the contents is as follows: /usr/bin/dspam --stdout --mode=tum --deliver=innocent,spam --feature=chained,noise --user global |/var/qmail/bin/preline -f /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d $RECIPIENT || exit 77 This script name is mentioned in each user's deliveryProgramPath in the LDAP. I am not sure whether this is the best approach of using dovecot as MDA. I tried to include the following contents in /var/qmail/control/defaultdelivery : |/var/qmail/bin/preline -f /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d $RECIPIENT But it seems that this is not working as desired. Please comment, if I have gone wrong anywhere. #2: I wish to use dspam to filter out the spam messages, but I am unsure whether the dspam plugin mentioned in http://johannes.sipsolutions.net/Projects/dovecot-dspam-integration is already in the dspam version I am using. Hello, I'm setting up Dovecot with client certificates and everything is working fine as long as the client only has one certificate in his store. If he has more than one, the wrong one might be sent to the server. The root of the problem is that Dovecot does not send out a list of valid CA names in the TLS handshake. If I connect using openssl s_client I get: "No client certificate CA names sent" I am using Dovecot 1.0 RC15 from backports.org. Is there a solution to this problem? Regards, Johnny

Hello, Trying to figure out how to get dovecot to startup at boot. I saw the Ubuntu script on the dovecot site, but that didn't work on my system (SuSe 10.2). Of course, copying the /usr/local/sbin/dovecot file into /etc/init.d doesn't work at all. Any one have working SuSe script?? Rodman

After sending a messasge about a problem (The folder 'Inbox' cannot contain items. Namespace problems) I found what seems to be a fix in the release for rc29. Besides any potential configuration files, do I need to delete the old index files? Any of the dovecot files? Based on the release notes for rc29 it seems the following will fix the problem we are experiencing: IMAP: LIST "" "" didn't return anything if there didn't exist a namespace with empty prefix. This broke some clients.

Timo, I finally made the time to backport a pam fix I created for proftpd over to dovecot, that allows FreeBSD's pam_group to work as expected. (the bug was escalated to me internally hehe.. ). I also noticed an issue while testing that will be confusing to users. If the docs stay as is, or the other half of this patch is applied, then when the dovecot.conf contains: passdb pam { args = * } the imap files within etc/pam.d right now have to be named 'IMAP' and 'POP3' rather than the expected 'imap' and 'pop3'. Hello, I run the domain for the school here with qmail and vpopmail on FreeBSD with dovecot from the ports. I'm running dovecot 1.0.r26 and everything is working great. I been noticing that dovecot isn't updating when the user last logged in.. and I can't seem to figure out why. [Dovecot] Suggestion: mod_auth_dovecot

Hello, I have a suggestion which might be a small and very useful project for a C coder (I'm not one!). As Dovecot makes its authentication interface available to other programs, I think that an Apache module to use it would be very useful. Currently I share an passwd-db file between Dovecot and Apache. However with Apache that means I have to give Apache read access. That means that websites with PHP could read that password file if they liked. If Apache could talk to the Dovecot authentication process instead, that would be a lot better. I'm sure there are lots of situations in which this would be useful - Dovecot's authentication settings are so flexible that it would be very handy to be able to use them more widely. If anyone produces one, I pledge to produce an RPM package and submit it to Fedora as my contribution. I would do it myself if I knew C... David

Hi all... The prefetch entry in the wiki says: "If you're using Dovecot's local delivery agent, you'll still need a valid userdb which it can use to locate the users. You can do this by adding a normal sql/ldap userdb after userdb prefetch." (http://wiki.dovecot.org/UserDatabase/Prefetch) My question is: Does it need to be a SQL/LDAP userdb? [Dovecot] testing LDAP connections

Hello all, I haven't looked into the source code, but i suspect that LDAP connections, once established, are not tested properly. My scenario is the followind: Dovecot server <--------> firewall <---------> LDAP backend What happens is that the firewall has a security feature which basically make de firewall box "forget" about connections that are idle for more than X period of time. That particular setting is 30 minutes right now. When that happens, neither the LDAP backend or the Dovecot server get any type of notification, and for all they care the connection is alive and well. This is a very common implementation in firewalls nowadays. So my question is, is there any way to make dovecot re-open a new connection if there is a timeout while trying to use a connection already opened? I believe that this could be of great benefit for those who don't have their servers on the same physical network. Hi all, After looking at the LDA/Sendmail page in the dovecot wiki, I wanted to contribute another method to easily configure Sendmail to use deliver. Instead of adding a new mailer definition, as already suggested, one can simply use the following line in their sendmail.mc file instead: FEATURE(`local_procmail', `/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver', `deliver -d $u', `SPhnu9')dnl And further on, still use: MAILER(procmail)dnl The location of deliver will of course vary for each OS and distro, etc, but this redefines the "procmail" mailer in the resulting sendmail.cf to use deliver instead, with the correct flags. For most setups, I believe this is the simplest configuration path. [Dovecot] Unexpected behaviour when deleteing a big mailbox

I usually use IMAP's "Mark messages a deleted" function and expunge later. Because the "Move to Trash" is default in many MUAs, I decided to try it on this mailbox. I do think that it is hard to detect and prevent such problem, but could it be implemented that when the client connection times out, the COPY process is terminated and rolled back? I mean, as long as the messages are copied/linked to */tmp nothing is done, yet, hence, a simple cleanup of */tmp would result in a rollback. Due to the timeout, the EXPUNGE wasn't issued so far and the source mailbox is unchanged. Or, is it possible to prevent two COPYs of an overlapping message range into the same destination folder simultaneously? Or, can I prevent to COPY such a huge range of messages at once? I know 80'000 messages are much, but I have users with an INBOX of at least 40'000, eventually moving all files into an archive mailbox. The mail folders are in Maildirs, NFS-mounted from a NetApp filer, and each account's INBOX has around 1000 messages in it. Control and Index files are on local disk. By the end of the 30 second test run load average has climbed to around 11 I don't know how "active" the imaptest10 utility is when it's running, but do you think I should be concerned by the "stalled" messages? That is, do you think I have something configured amiss? Or is it likely just to be I'm expecting too much of our hardware? [Dovecot] locking question

There are three applications that have their mitts on files on my mail server, which is running AIXV5.3 and UWIMAP and mbox format. The mail folders and INBOXES are native to that machine, but also are NFS exported to a login server and a mailing list server. All three machines are running the lockd daemon. Everybody wants to lock differently 1) procmail (delivering for sendmail), which seems to want to use dotlocking, fcntl and lockf locking; for whatever reasons, the compile time tests seem to disallow flock. 2) UWIMAP which according to wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/UW uses: mbox_read_locks = flock mbox_write_locks = dotlock flock 3) I want to run dovecot in the same environment as I switch over, for which the locking strategy is supposed to be (according to http://wiki.dovecot.org/MboxLocking) mbox_read_locks = fcntl mbox_write_locks = dotlock fcntl Since that same page in the wiki says. "*It's important that all software that's reading or writing to mboxes use the same locking settings.",* I had recompiled procmail so it only usedotlocking and fcntl (thus removing lockf in addition to the disallowed flock)...but now I bumped into the Migration/UW page and there looks to be a conflict. I want to be able to run dovecot (for testing) and UWIMAP (for all users/production) at the same time (but never at the same time with the same mailbox), but UWIMAP is doc'ed to use flock and Dovecot doesn't It's conceivable that the different locking strategies of UWIMAP and Dovecot don't matter because they would never be going after the same mail files (right?) but there is procmail, which has to interact with both. It appears to not use flock OK, even though the docs say it should since UWIMAP expects it, and I've disabled lockf as well. But will there be a conflict with procmail and dovecot's use of fcntl, which UWIMAP doesn't use? Are there any other files/dirs created for dovecot alone (not the mail folders and INBOXes); if so, how should they be owned and permed? Hi, I have recently migrated from Courier to Dovecot, and I noticed a problem in one of my spam scripts. Here's the setup: Spam that needs to be retrained by the filter is placed in a maildir from the IMAP client. A cron job scans that maildir and if it finds a message, feeds it to the spam filter and removes it from the training maildir. Depending on whether or not the message was a spam or ham, it is either deleted or delivered to Inbox. It appears I am getting an error when the script deletes a mail message. I haven't checked if this message only occurs when a client is connected -- it's possible. [Dovecot] convert plugin failing

I'm struggling to get the convert plugin working using the Debian etch packages. When starting dovecot it was trying to create files in /.temp.hostname... convert-plugin.c looks like it has a couple of typos in it - it checks "mail" three times for NULL rather than mail, user, home. I changed this but it's getting called when these three items are set to: "maildir:/HOME_DIRECTORY_USED_BUT_NOT_GIVEN_BY_USERDB/Maildir" "dump-capability" "" I must be missing something - shouldn't the mailboxes only be converted when a user logs in? Hi all, Merging the two large recent threads, my recommendation is as follows: * The Release Candidates for 1.0 should be bug fixes only. * Each new Feature, or a Feature Set, goes in a separate branch. * That branch is tested by those who need/want that feature. * When testing is completed, the branch is merged into the main trunk. This way, we will have fairly well tested features/feature sets in the main trunk which people can fairly safe download and test and deploy, if their own tests succeeds. When the feature code is merged into the main trunk, the minor version is incremented by one (1.0.x --> 1.1.0). Bug fixes increment the revision (1.1.0 --> 1.1.1). Easy to follow, easy to package for package maintainers. Also, it's easy to write Readme's and other documentation on what's changed. (And for those who think that odd versions are for development (unstable), well, they will just wait until sufficient features have been added before they think it is stable... ) Timo's new features he sees for future versions, plan them for a 2.0 or a 1.1 or whatever version number, just don't call it 1.0.2rc1 :-) Another suggestion, is to create a Bugzilla (or similar) site for dovecot. That gives us all a chance to track changes and bug fixes. /Peter, building rc29 as I write this

[Dovecot] rc28 : can't set quotas with userdb + passwd file

I'm using dovecot 1.0 rc28 - great software! I have a virtual hosting setup, with passdb and userdb both using a passwd file. I cannot get per-user quotas put in the relevant field of the userdb to work. They appear to be completely ignored; only the setting from /etc/dovecot.conf is applied. Can anyone confirm that this is working for them? If it is, can you post the relevant bits of your configuration, please? Many thanks. Kind regards, David

Hello everyone, I am getting an error message on FreeBSD 4 after I install dovecot. To start off, I create two regular users, testuser and testuser1. I send each user emails then I install dovecot. [Dovecot] Security hole #3: zlib plugin allows opening any gziped mboxes

zlib plugin allows opening gzipped mboxes as read-only mailboxes. However when using it, the mailbox name checks are bypassed so it's possible to open for example "../otheruser/somefile.gz". Only valid gzipped mbox files can be opened, and only if their name ends with ".gz". You can fix this by upgrading to v1.0.rc29 (available soon) or with this patch: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot-cvs/2007-March/008488.html I don't think this matters much though. zlib plugin is rarely used, and those who do use it are probably using Dovecot with systems users (per-user UIDs), so the imap process wouldn't have access to other users' mbox files anyway. I found this problem when I was cleaning up the code in CVS HEAD.

[Dovecot] uiddir mailbox format with benchmarks

I cleaned up the lib-storage code a bit so that it's easier to write support for new mailbox formats. It could still use a bit of cleaning up. Anyway, I thought I'd try how easy it would be to implement Cyrus-like mail store which would consist of only Dovecot's index files and "<uid>." message files. Flags and everything else is kept only in Dovecot's index files (so it might not be the best idea to use it in production just yet). Several hours later I ended up having it working. The same with maildir and mbox: maildir: 6022 18232 165605 total mbox: 7859 23283 213686 total Benchmarks show that with small mailboxes it's a lot faster than maildir, and with larger mailboxes it's a bit faster. I also tested it against Cyrus. I found out that fetching ENVELOPE vs. specific headers gives quite a huge performance difference. Cyrus is optimized for ENVELOPE while Dovecot is optimized for specific headers. With larger mailboxes + ENVELOPE Cyrus is faster than Dovecot, while with specific headers Dovecot is always faster. Maybe I'll some day make Dovecot optimize for ENVELOPE also if it sees that client only wants to use it. BTW. Does anyone have better naming ideas than "uiddir"? Hi Timo & Co, Is there any time frame for updating the deliver LDA's sieve plugin code to that from Cyrus IMAPd v2.3.x? I ask as I'm looking for the functionality of the sieve-body extension, as described here: http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-sieve-body-06.txt This requirement has come up as we're upgrading from a Courier-IMAP/maildrop configuration that has some filtering based on message body content. As an aside, if that time frame is undefined or will be long, if I use maildrop instead as my LDA, will I loose the instant delivery notification via IMAP IDLE? [Dovecot] Version numbering

After v1.0 is released, I can finally get back to sane version numbers. But any comments on which one is better: a) Postfix-style: "1.1.UNSTABLE.YYYYMMDD" -> 1.1.0 (stable) b) Odd-even numbering: 1.1.x (unstable) -> 1.2.0 (stable) With a) style the releases could be done by simply copying a nightly snapshot to releases/ directory and announcing the changes since the last release. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

[Dovecot] Forbidding folder delete

Is there some way I can forbid the deleting of folders? I have a Thunderbird user who twice now has accidentally deleted a folder, forcing me to go fetch it from the nightly backup. I'd like to prevent this from happening again, and the easiest way to me is to block folder deletion. I'd rather do that "manually" from the shell than leave it available from the client GUI.

[Dovecot] Copy to sent mail timeouts

Hi. I'm running the dovecot IMAP that comes with Ubuntu Edgy, which is 1.0rc2. I realize this is old, but I'll ask my question in case anyone knows about this problem and how to fix it, or knows that a later version definitely fixes it. What I'm seeing is that the IMAP server works perfectly, except for occasional timeouts when the user sends an email with attachments, causing that email then to be copied to their sent mail folder. The behavior seen is that Thunderbird, for instance, will say it is copying to the sent mail and the progress goes up to 100%, but then stops and Thunderbird eventually says the action timed out. I don't see anything in any dovecot logging and the file does not appear in the sent mail. I don't have any other kind of timeout issues. I can move mails around folders, read large emails, or whatever. The problem seems worse with large emails, but some times it will copy 15 MB emails and some times it won't. I can't find that any particular email always fails. Any ideas? As a last resort, I'll build the latest rc from scratch, but I like the automatic installation, notification of security problems, etc. I get with the distro packages. Thanks Jeff

I'm not sure if it's even intended to work in this particular case, but there's a problem when chroot is explicitely defined and rawlogging is used. Rawlog respects chroot point, without being actually chrooted.
