Hi, I just migrated a server running qmail+vpopmail+maildir to sendmail+dovecot+maildir+vpopmail The migrating is working great thanks to the help from the list and the wiki. I'm now running the infamous problem about duplicating emails, because of pop3 UIDL mismatch. My question is: anyone knows that the pop3_uidl_format string for a vpopmail server? I'm using vpopmail auth and userdb. I noted that when manually issuing a list command to the vpopmail pop3 server, it uses a number that is in the filename for identifying the email. For example if the filename uses: .....,S=1234,... Then the UID is 1234, and 1234 appears in the list command. [Dovecot] LSUB "" "" vs LIST "" "" (hacked Apple Mail problem)

The LSUB command does not act like LIST when provided with an empty mask argument. LIST responds with the hierarchy delimiter: * LIST (\Noselect) "." "" OK List completed. whereas LSUB doesn't return anything useful: OK Lsub completed. RFC 3501 doesn't specify what LSUB should do in this case, but Courier IMAP has LSUB act like LIST. The attached patch modifies imap/cmd-list.c to make Dovecot do the same. Why do I care about LSUB? I'm using a hack for Apple Mail that replaces its LIST command with LSUB (something like what's described here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php? story=20040407062603804), to prevent it from syncing public folders from the Exchange server at the office. The hack replaces _all_ LISTs with LSUBs, including the LIST "" "" Mail.app sends to discover the hierarchy delimiter. Since dovecot doesn't give it any information in response to LSUB "" "", Mail.app defaults to using "/" as a delimiter, which means that trying to access a subfolder only results in an "Invalid mailbox name" error. While this isn't really a bug in Dovecot, it's not inconceivable that other people than me could be affected by this problem (macosxhints.com has a substantial readership). It's also tricky to diagnose, especially since the "Invalid mailbox name" message doesn't include the invalid mailbox name, so any bug reports you get are likely to eventually be filed under "crazy [Mac] users". In fact, while Googling to figure out why Dovecot wasn't working for me, I came across at least one poster to this mailing list who had discovered that Mail.app was using "/" as a delimiter. I can't be sure, but I'm guessing that his problem was related to mine. Since the patch is tiny and doesn't hurt performance or make Dovecot do anything that contradicts the IMAP RFC, I hope you'll consider adding it to the official distribution. Eyvind Bernhardsen

Hello Everybody, I would like to use Dovecot on my desktop with imap but before doing the real migration I have some (very simple) questions: - Is there any way to log in with imap automatically ? That is, from localhost without any passwords. - Can Dovecot work with only readable maildirs? I want to avoid accidental e-mail loss, therefore on some maildir folder I have only read permissions. Or shall I use ACLs only? - Is there or Will there be a windows version? (In case I had to use windows.) Thanks for any help. Hello. I've notice a problem with SMTP AUTH in postfix with dovecot. My configuration is based on Postgresql. I've created a function in postgresql which returns password and username and attached it to password_query. Query looks like this password_query = SELECT username_out as username, password_out as password FROM get_password(lower('%n'),lower('%d')); Problem is when get_password returns something like this... vmail=# SELECT username_out as username, password_out FROM get_password(lower(''),lower('')); LOG: statement: SELECT username_out as username, password_out FROM get_password(lower(''),lower('')); LOG: duration: 2.342 ms statement: SELECT username_out as username, password_out FROM get_password(lower(''),lower('')); username | password_out ----------+-------------- | (1 row) It returns 1 empty row.... When this is attached to postfix with smtp auth with such configuration # SMTP AUTH broken_sasl_auth_clients = yes smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtpd_sasl_security_options = noanonymous smtpd_sasl_authenticated_header = yes smtpd_sasl_local_domain = smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot smtpd_sasl_path = private/auth my serwer starts to be open relay... I now that it returns empty string for username and password... so where is the password checked... if I dont send password as a parameter to my function. [Dovecot] bug? ldap auth CRAM-MD5

Hello list, our users are authenticated against ldap-server. anything works fine... dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<xxx>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured but now we want to use secure passwords and not only plain over ssl. so we configured dovecot to use cram-md5 and configured the ldap-server with CRAM-MD5 passwords. as client we used thunderbird 2.0 and a webfrontend called roundcube. that does not work, because the server gives... dovecot: auth(default): ldap(xxx,127.0.0.1): Password mismatch then we tried to use DIGEST-MD5. we changed the ldap password to the created one with dovecotpw. but this doesnt work too. thunderbird requests CRAM-MD5 and not DIGEST-MD5. so the log says: dovecot: auth(default): password(xxx,127.0.0.1): Requested CRAM-MD5 scheme, but we have only DIGEST-MD5 imap-login: Aborted login: user=<xxx>, method=CRAM-MD5 after that we changed the password back to CRAM-MD5, but we mad the failure not to delete the DIGEST-MD5 value. so the users had 2 passwords set... {CRAM-MD5}e02d374fde0dc75a17a557039a3a5338c7743304777dccd376f332bee68d2cf6 {DIGEST-MD5}358aefa044c08e6c19711c8117714fb0 password is "test" in both cases. on the next try we start thunderbird it works. i dont know why and the log of dovecot says... auth(default): ldap(xxx,127.0.0.1): Multiple password values not supported imap-login: Login: user=<xxx>, method=CRAM-MD5, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured user was logged in using CRAM-MD5. it's not nice but it works. anyone have an idea why? because of apache-module to auth against ldap and apache doesnt support nor CRAM-MD5 or DIGEST-MD5 we have set the password third time using MD5. So every user has three same passwords with different encryptions. Not nice - but it works. But what can we do to change this. Hi, now that a lot off software is updated e.g. RedHat EL and dovecot got finaly final :-) we plan to upgrade our mailserver from RHEL4 dovecot 0.99 to RHEL5 with dovecot 1.0rc15 - the rpms provided by Red Hat. I've read the upgrading Dovecot manual from here http://wiki.dovecot.org/UpgradingDovecot, but yust to get things right I'd like to ask some questions: Simply spoken, we use the basic default dovecot-config, mbox format and imaps/pop3s. So will there be any big trouble to just use the most default settings of the 1.0 config file? Or which options are compleatly different? Dose there exist a migration how to beside the dovecot upgrade from the wiki? Thanks for hints and tips! [Dovecot] disabling pop/imap per mail address?

hello, first of all I want to say thanks to Timo for Dovecot 1.0. We've been running it in production at the company where I work and we're very pleased with it. Good job! One thing that we were wondering about today is if we can disable a certain protocol depending on the mailbox. So for example: user A can access via pop3s and imap, user B can only access via pop3, user C can use only imaps, and so on. thanks! armijn PS: am I assuming correctly that IMAP namespaces will make it possible to have shared IMAP folders with Dovecot? [Dovecot] message-of-the-day feature?

For lack of a better name, we are interested in a feature where one could get a notice out to all Dovecot users as quickly as possible, possibly without going through an MTA even. Given a message and a list of userids we could certainly do a mailing on the MDA server itself going through both Postfix and Dovecot LDA. However, we were wondering what other options we might have in Dovecot. For example, would it be possible to place the message into some file which Dovecot periodically checks for, and if the file exists, either present it to the user as a new message, or automatically deliver it at that time via Dovecot LDA? -- Steven F. Hi, I am using dovecot 1.0 with squirrelmail. [Dovecot] SASL Problems

Hello all, I seem to be having a problem with SASL. It doesn't seem to work with Outlook. Upon searching a bit, I found that I need to enable "login" for auth mechanisms. However, when I do that, (after I stop and start dovecot and postfix), and then try to use SMTP auth using Outlook, it causes postfix to crash. It works fine with Thunderbird still though. Any ideas as to what the cause might be? I'm using Dovecot 1.0.0 and Postfix 2.3.5. Thanks, Phillip

Hi all, I have recently migrated my mail from courier-imap to dovecot. In doing so, I finally configured mutt to connect to imaps (SSL). In the end I got it all working. I then sat back and thought: "I kinda don't understand the SSL/TLS part even though it works". And I hate setting stuff up and not truely understanding the mechanics of it. So I started to write about it and am stuck. Can those that _understand_ mutt+ssl have a read of what I wrote to myself and give me your $00.02 worth (corrections etc). Trying to explain mutt+ssl and getting it all wrong --------------------------------------------------- * mutt(with openssl support built in) initiates with a "SSL-Client-Hello" to SSL on port 993 i.e. mutt's capabilities (algorithms, SSL version etc). * dovecot:993 compares mutt's CipherSuites with its own. Of the CipherSuites mutt and dovecot have in common, dovecot:993 chooses the _most_ secure algorithm. * Dovecot:993 will then tell mutt what it has decided to use and assigns a Unique session ID. From now on all communication is via this ID. * Now that the CipherSuite is set between mutt and dovecot, dovecot sends its SSL certificate to mutt [/usr/local/share/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem]. mutt then uses dovecot's corresponding public key [/usr/local/share/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem] to verify that the ceritificate is authentic. * once mutt has verified that the certificate is authentic ... and here I got unstuck. [Dovecot] deliver failing to execute sendmail (sieve)

I have apparently done something to mess up my test installation, as deliver's attempts to send messages now fail with the following error: deliver(user(a)example.com): execv() failed: No such file or directory In these cases, I have sieve rules trying to send messages. It had been working though, and I've tried going through all the changes I made yesterday (related to dictionary quota debugging) to find what could be wrong, but no luck so far. So, I was hoping for suggestions. Basically, deliver seems to not know where sendmail is. I have sendmail_path set in dovecot.conf (never changed that), yet when deliver tries to pull the location via deliver_set->sendmail_path, it's just returning an empty string. If I hard-code the location in smtp-client.c, it works again. Any ideas?

[Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0.0 and Seive 1.0.1 on FreeBSD

I have installed dovecot and sieve using the FreeBSD ports. Authentication is against a MySql Database. Dovecot is running using deliver as the LDA. I can set up and access a dovecot pop3 account using outlook express fine. I can telnet into it fine. However, GFI FaxMaker is failing to log in. I assisted a client in switching his web site, including email from one server (FreeBSD) which was using Cyrus to a Redhat 4.0 server using dovecot version 0.99.11 Here's the listing of dovecot -n: dovecot -n Usage: dovecot [-F] [-c <config file>] Fatal: Unknown argument: -n The GFI Faxmaker polls the pop3 account every minute so we're getting a lot lf these messages in the log file: Apr 19 19:51:28 server name pop3-login: Aborted login [::ffff:<ip address here>] Again, I can telnet in to the account from that server. I verified all the log in credentials are correct but it still is failing to log in. Any ideas?

I use: log_path = /var/log/maillog info_log_path = /var/log/maillog And into /var/log are: maillog maillog.1 maillog.2 maillog.3 Now when log files are rotating at 04:00 (maillog > maillog.1) dovecot still keeps login into maillog.1 and not into maillog, where sendmail, etc writes logs. The only solution I did found, is adding into /etc/logrotate.d/syslog command to restart dovecot: /var/log/maillog { postrotate /usr/bin/killall -HUP syslogd /etc/rc.d/init.d/dovecot restart >/dev/null 2>&1 endscript } Any other solution? -- Mart

Hello dovecot users, I have updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to fix the currently known small problems with the protocol implementation. It is designed for rc28, but also compiles cleanly with the current cvs branch_1_0. Change Log V4 ------------- - Added managesieve_implementation_string setting to the managesieve configuration. This can be used to customize the default "IMPLEMENTATION" capability response (as requested by John Peacock). - Denied ANONYMOUS login until proper support is implemented - Fixed problem with authenticate command regarding continued responses. In V3 only initial response would work. Problem was caused by rc2 -> rc28 upgrade. One of the clear reasons why code duplication is a very bad idea. - Fixed readlink bug as indicated by Timo: return value of readlink can also be -1. - Fixed bug in the regular file rescue code, as introduced in the previous version. Used stat instead of lstat. This caused the symlink to be rescued subsequently in the next activation, thus still overwriting the initially rescued script. [Dovecot] Duplicate E-mail Problem

Hello all, Definitely congrats on the 1.0.0 release! Anyway, I'm having a problem, that may or may not be related to Dovecot. Specifically, duplicate (and sometimes triplicate) emails are appearing. These emails have exactly the same queue ID, so its not that they were sent multiple times. These dup emails do not show up to me ever. Postfix is being used as the SMTP, and it hands it over to procmail. I set up procmail's verbose logging feature for that user and on the duplicate emails that he receives, it shows only ONE write to a file for that specific subject of email. Tonight / this morning I'll be tracking down to see if this duplicate for sure happens in IMAP. Note: Its possible that part of the problem is he leaves two IMAP clients open at the same time (Netscape I think). I'm going to verify that with him. Any ideas? I'm NOT trying to blame Dovecot, I'm just trying to explore options. Right now its looking fairly bad for Dovecot though....I mean, what else is there after the mail is delivered to the appropriate place in the mailbox? It already has tons of new features. I've been using it myself for half a year, so it should be mostly stable too. I'll write a separate mail about this later.

Hey, This may be a dumb question... I'm trying to set up 1.0 with a static userdb, and I'm getting stuck. I have: userdb static { args = uid=500 gid=500 home=/domains/%d/%n } When I attempt to log in as, say, kyle(a)memoryhole.net (via telnet, so I *know* I'm logging in as that user), the debug log says that it thinks my home directory is "/domains//kyle". I even tried, just to check what might be going on: args = uid=500 gid=500 home=/domains/%u/%d/%n It then thought my home directory was "/domains/kyle//kyle". Can anyone help me? I've configured the lazy_expunge plugin exactly like it says on the wiki. I can't seem to configure Mulberry to find the new namespaces. Any hints? I notice that the wiki says to use / as the separator. Mulberry has a setting for this, and the default is '.'. Leaving this as '.' in Mulberry and / in dovecot seems to work fine. (But I still can't access the .EXPUNGED or other namespaces.) Another page on the wiki says that the default separator for maildir is '.'. Why does the lazy_expunge page suggest using '/'? I'm very confused about namespaces. -frank

Hi there, I got a daily cron (rdate to local time server) job wich adjusts time and which constantly gives me headache. Every day my dovecot suicides with: "dovecot: Time just moved backwards by 11 seconds. This might cause a lot of problems, so I'll just kill myself now." Of course my onboard clock is constantly off by more than 5 secs. I don't want to abandon time synchronization and I want to use dovecot. Maybe a -HUP signal would do? [Dovecot] keeping indexes in tmpfs

While doing some testing with converting accounts while simulating incoming mail load (no other pop/imap processes going but 4 processes converting users), we found that we were maxing out the local disk in the server with the index activity. To find out that it was the index activity, I mounted a tmpfs for dovecot to keep indexes on, and the system load dropped from 70 to 3 :) Anyway, Timo and others, do you have any thoughts about keeping indexes on a tmpfs partition? I realize the obvious issues with this: running out of space, and the fact that the partition is lost on reboot. However, we plan to run a cluster of these servers anyway, where we will keep domains/accounts going to a particular server but fail over to one of the others in case of an outage. Recreating the indexes seems pretty trivial when writing to tmpfs anyway, plus we could copy the indexes to disk (restore after reboot) in the case of planned outages... unplanned outages result in another server rebuilding them all anyway. So, I'm looking for non-obvious issues we may have with this approach. I need to do more testing to see how much memory we would actually need to feasibly keep the indexes there, but otherwise is there a good reason not to do this?

[Dovecot] Different classes of user

Hello list! Only recently joined, please excuse me if this is a stupid question. I'd like to have 2 classes of user: those with shell accounts, and those without. They'll all have "real" accounts, for which the password can be checked with PAM. I've set up SSL too. What I want to arrange is for users with shell accounts not to be succeed in logging in to Dovecot without using TLS/SSL. I'll have to allow unencrypted logins (for non-shell users), but I want to reject/refuse such a login from someone with a shell account. I've already made my exim do this, with the following logic in my authenticator there: if (pam auth ok) and ((tls) or (user's shell not listed in /etc/shells)) I haven't worked out how to make Dovecot do this, yet. So far I just tried using * as the PAM service name, in the hope that not only would pop3 or imap get passed through, but pop3s and imaps might, and I had a line in my /etc/pam.d/imap and pop like this: auth required pam_succeed_if.so debug shell notin /bin/bash:/bin/sh which worked, but unfortunately also got used for imapS logins. Then I realised this was likely to be the wrong thing anyway, because it would presumably only cover IMAPS on port 993, and not IMAP+TLS on the usual port 143. So I've had a go but got it wrong. I want to take the indexes and move them off of NFS (~/Maildir) and place in /var/spool/dovecot/indexes, but not have to hand create everything (user homes, mail folders) So, I create a parent folder /var/spool/dovecot/indexes that has the appropriate permissions for writing by all users/dovecot. If I then set: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/spool/dovecot/indexes/%1u/%u ...will the dovecot daemon(s) automagically create (A) the parent user folders (i.e. .../indexes/t/tengel/)(1), and (B) the necessary subfolders for all the child folder indexes? Hello all, Is there any way to add additional options for the mail_log plugin? Specifically, I'm wanting to make it so IMAP copy commands will show the source filename and/or the user's IP address. Is this possible? If there are docs for this info, feel free to point me to it. -Phillip

Hi, I am using dovecot deliver as lda for sendmail. My problem is that when a user account is over quota, deliver program sends message in the logs, but the message is not bounced back to sender informing that their is disk quota problem at the recipient side. Further message remains in the mail queue. Details are below. Plz suggest how to figure out the problems: 1. Message should be removed from queue if quota is exceeded 2. Sender should get a proper response. In passdb-pam.c, I found some bits about const with some PAM data types. Rather than check for each vendor of PAM, better to check for actual const usage ... some vendors have changed const-ness between releases. Also, actually testing constness is great for supporting new implementations that may come out. [Dovecot] Moving Maildir files from multiple Dovecot installs

I currently have Dovecot running on a SuSE SLES 10 mail server with postfix as the MTA and a number of real linux users. I have postfix delivering to Maildir records. We are going to convert to a virtual user/domain system with PostfixAdmin. I have checked out all of our settings and they appear to work well except for a problem with authenticating against mySQL using MD5-Crypt; plaintext works well however. My question is how to transfer the maildir files from the real users Maildirs to the created virtual users. When creating a mail user PostfixAdmin will create the maildir directory. Once this is created can I simply rsync the complete old directory including the dovecot files to the new mailbox? Sorry for the newbie question. Just upgrading to 1.0.0 and I'm trying to switch from PAM (using pam-mysql) to a direct mysql query from dovecot, and I've got both md5crypt and crypt passwords in a password db. http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/PasswordSchemes seems to indicate that I have to pick 1, but that is per auth-worker, right? So, I created 2 auth workers using 2 dovecot-sql config files specifying different default encryption schemes and it seems to work. Hello all Ive installed a new Server with dovecot, started using it and had no problems until I noticed that I couldnt create sub-sub-folders on my imap account, Ive read for the past two days info on how to convert and I know now that instead of using mbox I need to user maildir, the issue is now to convert mbox to maildir, on the various searches I did, I found the convert wiki page (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Convert) followed the instructions there and no luck, I always end up with an error: Eopen(/.temp.chihuahua.intranet.acorporativa.com.mx.21409.1089e702ee50f317) failed: Permission denied Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 If I remove the line convert_mail = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u it starts correctly but I see no e-mails and no conversion takes place, since its a production server Ive reverted all changes and had to add a line (mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u) to be able to see my e-mails again. Ive tried stopping dovecot, making the changes and trying dovecot n to see the configuration, but with the same results. Any ideas on what Ive been doing wrong? They shouldn't anyway break anything, so here's one more day for you people to find out about any bugs. One thing that I'm a bit concerned about is the addition of #define LDAP_DEPRECATED. I know it fixes crashes with OpenLDAP 2.3 + 64bit systems, but I hope it doesn't break compiling with some old versions or non-OpenLDAP libraries.. - LDAP, auth_bind=no: Don't crash if doing non-plaintext ldap passdb lookup for unknown user. This also broke deliver when userdb static was used. - LDAP, auth_bind=yes and userdb ldap: We didn't wait until bind was finished before sending the userdb request, which could have caused problems. - LDAP: Don't break when compiling with OpenLDAP v2.3 library - Convert plugin: Don't create "maildirfolder" file to Maildir root.

[Dovecot] dovecot forward multipart problem

Hi, I experience problems everytime i forward a mail (basically, when forwarding an email containing an attachement). I'm using thunderbird (it does the same with outlook clients) with the forward parameter "as attachement" instead of "inline". (Using the inline parameters works fine). When i forward a mail with attachements (eg a jpeg file), the attachements file is displayed in base64 instead, and is impossible to detach/save. I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc22-1 (debian package) on debian etch, x86 SMP box with maildir format on a ext3 partition. I'm using postfix currently 2.3.4-3, i have tried different version of dovecot (from rc16 i think) and postfix (from 2.2.?) and i suspect the deliver to be the origin of the problem. I think it is the same problem than here http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2006-July/014786.html , my "From" headers are badly duplicated. Could this be fixed before the dovecot 1.0 release ? Hi all. I spent some time testing Dovecot's LDA sieve plugin and found problem with "notify" method. In fact it always returns "generic sieve error"... and thus produces bounce messages like this: ----- Your message was automatically rejected by Dovecot Mail Delivery Agent. The following reason was given: Unknown error ---- Deliver logs error: "generic sieve error", but otherwise server reports "notify" method as supported. The problem is: original code was taken from curys sieve and requires "notifyd", as sieve runs 'chrooted' and can't access external binaries like "sendmail". communications with notifyd is done via socket. Thus I wrote pacth, which ads "notify" functionality to dovecot's sieve plugin, at less "notify:mailto" method. cyrus originally contains null, log and zephyr methods. null and log is useless with dovecot, zephur is cyrus specific... RFC docs says there is 3 available methods SMS, XMPP and MAILTO: ------ method can be an SMS URI [SMS-URI <http://ietfreport.isoc.org/idref/draft-ietf-sieve-notify/#ref-SMS-URI>] containing a phone number, or an XMPP [XMPP <http://ietfreport.isoc.org/idref/draft-ietf-sieve-notify/#ref-XMPP>] URI containing an XMPP identifier [XMPP-URI <http://ietfreport.isoc.org/idref/draft-ietf-sieve-notify/#ref-XMPP-URI>] The supported URI values will be site-specific, but support for the [MailTo <http://ietfreport.isoc.org/idref/draft-ietf-sieve-notify/#ref-MailTo>] method is REQUIRED in order to insure interoperability. If a URI schema is specified that the implementation does not support, the notification MUST cause an error condition. Sieve scripts can check the supported methods using the "valid_notify_method" test to be sure that they only use supported ones, to avoid such error conditions. ------ as SMS-URI and XMPP methods are not included in cyrus sieve version, they are not available in dovecots plugin too. [any ideas, sample code how to implement them?] BUT... WARNING All this will not work if you have "mail_chroot" setting enabled in dovecot.conf; chrooted process can't access required external binaries. DOT USE THIS PLUGIN WITH "mail_chroot" SENTIG ENABLED! Actualy it is not sieve plugin problem only - its LDA problem... it can't send bonce messages, do forwards etc. Question to Timo: Do You have ideas how to fix it? My be disable chroting for LDA at all? or do it "cyrus way" - move all calls to external binaries to sepreate, non chrooted process? [Dovecot] convert plugin created maildirfolder file in root maildir directory

I've noticed that if a user's maildir gets created by deliver or pop/imap without the convert plugin running, the maildir structure is fine (no maildirfolder file). But, if a user gets converted, there is a maildirfolder file in the user's base maildir directory. As far as I can tell, that doesn't cause any problems, but I just wanted to mention it. I've looked at the code for a while but didn't find why it behaves differently.

Fedora pushed out an update to Dovecot 1.0 rc 28 today. After upgrading, mail isn't delivered to local recipients. I started playing with deliver, and saw a permission error in the logs for dovecot.conf. Under my distro install, /etc/dovecot.conf was installed owner/group root, with only user rw rights. I added "other" read privileges and deliver is happy - is this necessary? -- Daniel

I received this response from a member of the OpenLDAP core team when asking about meaning of the deferred operations I was seeing. Is it possible that this is what I'm seeing, Timo? -Ben --------------------------------------------- I'd note that if your client is performing search + bind on the same connection in an asynchronous manner, then the server behavior as per RFC4511 is undefined, since a server is not supposed to be willing to handle operations intermixed with binds until a bind is concluded. That is, any operation can be multiplexed on a single LDAP connection __except__ binds, which must be serialized. A more appropriate client for that type of operations would need to use at least 2 connections, one for searches and one for binds, and the one for binds should take care of either performing synchronous binds, or in any case to wait for response to a bind before performing another. In case of failure (e.g. timeout) while waiting for bind response, the connection should be trashed (see ldap_unbind_ext(3)) and recreated. This is what is done, for example, by slapd-ldap(5). p. [Dovecot] Dovecot Assertion on mail server with POP3 and LDAP authentication

Running two Fedora 6 systems with all the latest updates as of a week ago. One system is the mail server (sendmail, dovecot), the other is the master (open)LDAP server with the mail server running a slave LDAP instance. The problem I'm having is the client pop3 users are frequently being told their passwords aren't correct by their email clients (Outlook, Eudora). They try again, a couple times and eventually it works. I've seen it on my own account and when I test their accounts, occasionally it just doesn't take the password. I've only had this trouble since I implemented the LDAP authentication. Checking through the server maillog, I see the following entry: Apr 4 08:44:38 msi2 dovecot: auth(default): dovecot-auth: ../../../libraries/liblber/io.c:491: ber_get_next: Assertion `ber->ber_buf == ((void *)0)' failed. Hi List Looks like OpenLDAP 2.3 doesn't define LDAP_DEPRECATED [1] anymore which causes a few warnings in Gentoo [2]. Attached is a patch that re-defines this so that dovecot can continue using simple functions like ldap_bind(). [Dovecot] Convert plugin mbox to maildir has no effect

Convert plugin seems to have no effect with dovecot-1.0.rc26 and my settings. When a user log, maildir creation is successful, but no mbox conversion occur. New incoming mails are dropped into maildir, but I cant access those in Mbox file. [Dovecot] Building Dovecot to link against alternative libldap

I'm running Dovecot on an Ubuntu (Edgy) box. I'd like to link dovecot against the latest stable version of the OpenLDAP libraries instead of the system defaults. I can't really replace the existing libraries as other packages rely on them. If this didn't use libtool, I would be able to influence the runtime linker by manipulating -rpath and -L. I can't seem to figure out how to get this to work with Dovecot's libtool-based build. The system libldap_r.so.2 lives in /usr/lib My libldap_r.so.2.3 lives in /usr/local/lib Anyone have any pointers? -Ben

[Dovecot] Problems with (probably) Dovecot

Hello altogether, I've got Dovecot 0.99 installed on a Suse Linux 9.2 system, together with Postfix. I need to upgrade that server in the near future to new hardware and new versions, but at the moment it would be great, if I could find the solution for the following problem without upgrading. Unfortunately I didn't find a solution in Google. The system has enough memory and disc space, it was running for about 4 or 5 years without problems now. Trying to access my messages on the server via IMAP protocol using Outlook (2000 or 2002 or 2003) leads to an error message "Invalid messageset: xxxxxxxx" (where xxxxxxxx is a changing number). No data is displayed, the headers are not updated. Squirrelmail says, that the messages are not available any more. And Thunderbird joins in with Outlook and also tells me something about an invalid messageset. For some reasons (and some messages, not all) Kontact / Kmail does not give me error message, however, my main system is not a Linux one and therefore I'd like to get that fixed, if possible. Somewhere in Google I found a note about IMAP index files, which may be corrupt and need to be rebuilt, but I didn't find any Index files, I must admit. Any idea how to solve that? [Dovecot] rc31 -> "deferring operation: binding"

I hate to bring up anything that might delay 1.0, but the behavior I'm seeing is rather... weird. I'm running rc31, using "userdb static" and "auth_bind=yes". With rc1 (what I had been running) I would occasionally get some "deferring operation" complaints from LDAP, but very rarely. Every now and then it would start to throw "deferring operation: pending operations" and stop authenticating. Digging through the Changelog indicated you've made considerable updates to the auth_bind code, apparently to eliminate just such problems, so I upgraded. Now I'm running rc31 and my OpenLDAP logs are throwing an error like this every few seconds: Apr 9 19:56:42 swizzle slapd[1626]: connection_input: conn=6696168 deferring operation: binding This appears to happen with around every 3rd or 4th bind request. Sometimes it happens with the anonymous requests, sometimes with the auth bind request. As I understand it, the new auth_bind code is extremely careful about flushing all pending operations before attempting to perform the authentication bind. If that's the case, any idea why OpenLDAP is deferring the binding operations so frequently? So far it hasn't caused any login problems, but it's quite disconcerting given the expected behavior described in the Changelog. [Dovecot] Moving maildir folders between different RC dovecot machines

Is it ever necessary to delete any of the dovecot files when moving between machines from different RC versions? I read all the RC notes from RC15 to 31 and didn't see any notes about this, but wanted to be completely sure. Have some domains that I need to move from a RC15 machine to a RC29 machine. Also later this month we plan to ugprade from RC15 to Release 1.. when it is out shortly.

Everything seems to work well when I have a home dir for the user, but I don't like to clutter up my /home/ dir with dirs for users that will never use them (other than mail). Is there no way to just use /var/mail/user (I think in mbox format?). I have no interest at this time of using IMAP, this is purely for POP3. Thanks Nick

[Dovecot] error creating subfolders

I'm running rc31 and I've come across a weird little error in creating subfolders that's only apparent in a specific situation. I recently moved our entire campus from UW to dovecot, and as part of that migration, and following the wiki, I have some namespaces: ##default namespace namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } #for backwards compatibility: namespace private { separator = / prefix = mail/ hidden = yes } namespace private { separator = / prefix = ~/mail/ hidden = yes } which absorb the typical configuration previously used wherein the email client had the imap server folder set to "mail/" or similar, and which still remains on most clients. All of this works perfectly fine, and all users see their mail folders properly. Currently everyone is still in mbox format, and as far as I can tell, users can also create email folders without problems (ie single files in the file system containing messages). But one user discovered that it does not work to create folder containers (ie directories in the filesystem) that would contain other email folders, no matter how one appended / or checked the right box (or having me add the tb-extra-mailbox-sep client workaround -- they're using Thunderbird). Their client config still had mail/ as the server imap directory, and when I cleared that out, then everything worked perfectly. So it's a bit weird that everything works fine with the namespaces, except the one operation of creating the subfolder. I've compiled the latest release candidate of dovecot and I am encountering a strange problem when mail is delivered. I have my installation configured to use Maildir. When messages arrive, they are placed in the correct user directory, but the ownership for individual messages is set to root and the group set to mail. This prevents these messages from being displayed in my client. The error message logged is as follows: dovecot: Apr 08 13:11:08 Error: IMAP(mel): open(/home/mel/Maildir/cur/_d2F.eyKGGB.mjolnir:2,) failed: Permission denied The file permissions for the message are as follows: -rw------- 1 root mail 1805 2007-04-08 13:02 _AqG.VxTGGB.mjolnir:2, I also noticed that the log file in the root Maildir also has the same ownership assigned (not the user's uid/gid). Unless something has changed in dovecot.conf, this behavior is somewhat unexpected. [Dovecot] "TLS handshake" errors, frozen IMAP

Another new issue has cropped up with my rc1 -> rc31 upgrade: This morning, right around the typical morning email surge, Dovecot stopped accepting new IMAP connections. I didn't get a chance to do much troubleshooting and a restart of Dovecot fixed it. Back a year ago, I asked what the key DC executables where that I had to bring from my compile host to the production imap server to install or upgrade DC. I was told: dovecot, dovecot.conf, dovecot-auth, imap & imap-login I recently got DC up and running unencrypted and that worked fine. Then I tried to enable SSL and the logs said I was missing /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/ssl-build-param, which I located in the build tree under ./src/master. I am using the base AIX Unix authentication with NIS. I saw some stuff about AFS maildirs awhile back, and dovecot seems happy being running via ssh from offlineimap with :INDEX=/tmp/dovecot-%u, but what I'd really like to know is has anyone got a functional dovecot installation with AFS and GSSAPI sasl support that gets the correct users's AFS tokens? Hi Timo, First, thanks very much for dovecot, you are doing a fine thing making it open source, and it is working very well here. It would be helpful to me if there were more logging options available. For example, I would like to see a record of each email deleted, with the filename (if maildir), and size in the log. I haven't been able to find much documentation on logging at all. Have I just not been looking in the right place? If so, I would appreciate any enlightenment offered. Thanks in advance, - Richard

I get the errmsg: auth|security:err|error dovecot-auth PAM: load_modules: can not open module /usr/lib/security/pam_prohibit That file is 444 root:security What is wrong here? Also, I'm using plain UINX authentication, but PAM keeps trying to run. How do I turn it off? First off, just want to say Dovecot is great! We have been using it for several months now in a fairly large installation with only a few problems. We are running 1.0.rc28 on three servers with 3 Horde/IMP boxes talking to Dovecot. The user's home dirs are located on an NFS server and the indexes are stored in their Maildirs. I have mmap_disable=yes and lock_method=dotlock in dovecot.conf. We have not implemented anything to direct users to the same server as is recommended per the Wiki. I have been trying to avoid this, as the best way I could see to do it would be to put in an IMAP proxy (Perdition?) and I just wanted to keep it as simple as possible if I could. The problems we have been having are due to dovecot.*.lock files not being cleaned up. This issue presents itself as a user not being able to login via the webmail interface. I have attached the output of 'strace -p pid' of this IMAP session, which shows that it appears to be in a loop (statting the lock file?) for 244 seconds (seems to be consistent, tried it three different times) before it continues and gives me the INBOX. This happens for every subsequent command as well (Fetch, etc.) Once I log out, the lock files are not removed. Has anyone implemented a script to block IPs which are attacking on POP3 ports using dovecot logs to indicate repetitive failed login attempts? sshblack does this nicely for ssh (port 22) attacks by monitoring the /var/log/secure file. I am considering rewriting this to POP3 port (110), but if it has already been done, I sure don't need the practice. Thanks!

[Dovecot] chdir failed, but requires group permissions

Using Debian Etch package dovecot-common and dovecot-pop3d, based on 1.0.rc15-2 My home directories are set up with 770 permissions as follows: /home/<group name>/<user name> Using this method, users MUST be a member of the appropriate group to access their own home directory. If they are not, they can't chdir past /home. This appears to kill dovecot with a "chdir failed with id xxxx: Permission Denied" error, immediately after authenticating a pop3 user. I was able to make a user the owner of the <group name> directory, and dovecot succeeded But when the <group name> directory is owned by <group name>:<group name> and the user is a member of the group - the process dies. Any suggestions?

[Dovecot] SQL mail storage

I wasted some time yesterday and today implementing a SQL storage plugin. It seems to be working, but: - Saving new messages is done in a regular INSERT statement, which is bad. PostgreSQL has at least this COPY TO command which could be used instead. - It breaks in stress testing - It's not that well optimized. Especially it could support caching some commonly requested fields (same as dovecot.index.cache file). - Currently works only with PostgreSQL. Nothing is committed to CVS yet. I'm not sure if I should even do that. I'm not sure if those lib-sql API changes were that great. Maybe there's a better way.. If you're interested in trying it, you need the latest CVS HEAD sources and these patches: http://dovecot.org/patches/sql-storage-changes.diff http://dovecot.org/patches/sql-storage-plugin.diff The SQL schema is in src/plugins/mail-sql/schema.sql file. Hi there, I'm using the latest Thunderbird & Dovecot. I'm trying to setup either pop3s or imaps. The plain versions of the protocols both work fine for me, even with the TLS option selected in Thunderbird. But when I try to use the ssl versions, my client does not negotiate - it just time's out. Hi folks, I've poked through the archives and google and have not seen how do do this. Is it possible to virtualize ALL emails on a system? That is, I want delivery only to e.g. /var/mail/vmail/domain.tld/user/Maildir/, and for authentication & userdb to: 1) Try /etc/passwd, and if someone is there, automatically append the "default" domain, otherwise, 2) Authenticate off a mysql db or similar. Is this kind of "fallthrough" user lookup and auth. possible with dovecot? I assume the delivery can probably be done by just telling postfix to use dovecot as the local delivery agent. [Dovecot] Inbox inside the mail location

I recently had some scary experience with the Inbox being stored in the default /var/mail dir, and I believe it would be a better idea to keep the Inbox next to any other mail in the users $HOME. mail_location = mbox:~/.mail:INBOX=~/.mail/INBOX This is what I used for a quick test, and actually would love to use in production soon. Based on the test, it just does exactly what I want. :) However, I'd like to confirm what I see is how it is expected to work. Since the Inbox with this layout is is part of the ~/.mail dir just like any other mbox file (or subdir), I am concerned with getting a "second" Inbox mail folder in the client. I did not, which is great. So, is this expected behavior, and the Inbox mbox file actually being the Inbox and only the Inbox? Will it always be excluded from the list of IMAP mail folders? Also... Thanks for this great IMAP server! I migrated many moons ago, beginning with some 0.9x version I don't exactly recall, and it just works. Any way I can find out if it's really dovecot that's causing this? I recognize it might not be a dovecot issue, but it's the only hint i've got right now. .tim

Good evening, folks, Well, here at least. ;) I recently found out by accident about support for gzip compressed mbox files. While this is great for archives to keep wasting of space down to a minimum, unfortunately it is read only -- no support for rw access. Is implementing write access by any chance planned for future releases? Now for the spoiler. :) I mentioned, I found out about this feature "by accident", reading the NEWS for RC29. Talking to some guys on IRC I realized I am not the only one who found out about this by the release announcement. However, no one (around) was able to tell me how to use it, though interested too. I couldn't find any info in the docs, and google wasn't helpful either. But another careful look at the security announcement (especially the few words about it being a plugin not commonly used) got me going. So I figured, I'd mention it here -- I'm sure others have been wondering about this themself. And maybe google will pick up this post eventually. Of course, just sticking a gzipped mbox file inside your mail dir doesn't work... Inside the protocol imap section of the configuration, you need to enable the zlib plugin (and maybe set mail_plugin_dir, though the build time default should do). This works for mbox files gzipped in one fell swoop just as well as incrementally concatenated single gzipped mails, as served by some mailing list servers as archives. Keep in mind though, that these archives are read only. With one notable exception: Read/Unread status is being updated and saved, as it will be stored in the index files in this case. Hi ! I am still a bit annoyed with the way that Sieve plugin handles multiple delivery into the same folder. For reference : http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-January/019029.html Summary : When a same message (same message-id) is to be delivered twice into the same mailbox, it is delivered twice while I think that the second one should be discarded. Here are a few test cases : - you subscribe to a few mailing lists on topic "X" and deliver all mails from those mailing lists in the same folder. You get twice the mails that are crossposted. - you subscribe to one mailing list and read it regulary so you don't care of receiving messages from this mailing list (you are in Cc when someone answers) in your INBOX. You match on To or Cc to put everything in the same folder. You get messages twice when you are put personally in Cc. - you place a forward from one account to two of your accounts (one is keeping backup, the other don't but delivers faster). You receive all messages twice. With procmail, I handle those (real) cases with formail. I can't with Sieve. I don't see any interest in receiving the same message twice into the same mailbox. Is it possible to maintain a list of recent message-id and mailbox couples to avoid to deliver again a message to the same mailbox ? -- Terminate input by end-of-file or marker, not by count. - The Elements of Programming Style (Kernighan & Plauger)

[Dovecot] mbox sync/lock issue, rc28 and later

Help! I just noticed this error this morning, we have been getting a lot of these in rc28 and rc29, not in rc27 or before: Apr 6 07:22:52 karst dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.error] IMAP(jaearick): mbox file /var/mail/j/jaearick was modified while we were syncing, check your locking settings Pine coughed up an internal error, no core dump, and dovecot basically doubled the size of my mailbox by duplicating all of my messages again. What changed with file locking between rc27 and rc28 to cause this? How to fix? My setup: dovecot server is Solaris 10, with ZFS for home directories (where index files go). The mail server is also Solaris 10, /var/mail NFS mounted to the dovecot server (NFSv4, yes lockd is running). The /var/mail filesystem on the mail server is also ZFS.
