[Dovecot] testing LDAP connections

Hello all, I haven't looked into the source code, but i suspect that LDAP connections, once established, are not tested properly. My scenario is the followind: Dovecot server <--------> firewall <---------> LDAP backend What happens is that the firewall has a security feature which basically make de firewall box "forget" about connections that are idle for more than X period of time. That particular setting is 30 minutes right now. When that happens, neither the LDAP backend or the Dovecot server get any type of notification, and for all they care the connection is alive and well. This is a very common implementation in firewalls nowadays. So my question is, is there any way to make dovecot re-open a new connection if there is a timeout while trying to use a connection already opened? I believe that this could be of great benefit for those who don't have their servers on the same physical network. Hi all, After looking at the LDA/Sendmail page in the dovecot wiki, I wanted to contribute another method to easily configure Sendmail to use deliver. Instead of adding a new mailer definition, as already suggested, one can simply use the following line in their sendmail.mc file instead: FEATURE(`local_procmail', `/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver', `deliver -d $u', `SPhnu9')dnl And further on, still use: MAILER(procmail)dnl The location of deliver will of course vary for each OS and distro, etc, but this redefines the "procmail" mailer in the resulting sendmail.cf to use deliver instead, with the correct flags. For most setups, I believe this is the simplest configuration path. [Dovecot] Unexpected behaviour when deleteing a big mailbox

I usually use IMAP's "Mark messages a deleted" function and expunge later. Because the "Move to Trash" is default in many MUAs, I decided to try it on this mailbox. I do think that it is hard to detect and prevent such problem, but could it be implemented that when the client connection times out, the COPY process is terminated and rolled back? I mean, as long as the messages are copied/linked to */tmp nothing is done, yet, hence, a simple cleanup of */tmp would result in a rollback. Due to the timeout, the EXPUNGE wasn't issued so far and the source mailbox is unchanged. Or, is it possible to prevent two COPYs of an overlapping message range into the same destination folder simultaneously? Or, can I prevent to COPY such a huge range of messages at once? I know 80'000 messages are much, but I have users with an INBOX of at least 40'000, eventually moving all files into an archive mailbox. I'm also surprised to find that I didn't get two full copies of the source mailbox. ============== Start situation: 4.8G .box1 (I didn't recorded the individual subdirs, unfortunately.) # find .box1 -type f | wc -l 84273 Newly created .Trash. === I started Thunderbird, let sync the mailbox, selected them all, and pressed "Delete". I ended up with two processes copying all messages to .Trash/tmp on the server. The process I traced a bit later linked any file after the other. So, why are there 3.5GB additional files in .Trash, when I configured Dovecot to use hardlinks? I'm assuming it's just that I'm pushing our hardware beyond its reasonable limits: it is only an oldish development box... The mail folders are in Maildirs, NFS-mounted from a NetApp filer, and each account's INBOX has around 1000 messages in it. Control and Index files are on local disk. By the end of the 30 second test run load average has climbed to around 11 I don't know how "active" the imaptest10 utility is when it's running, but do you think I should be concerned by the "stalled" messages? That is, do you think I have something configured amiss? Or is it likely just to be I'm expecting too much of our hardware? [Dovecot] locking question

There are three applications that have their mitts on files on my mail server, which is running AIXV5.3 and UWIMAP and mbox format. The mail folders and INBOXES are native to that machine, but also are NFS exported to a login server and a mailing list server. All three machines are running the lockd daemon. Everybody wants to lock differently 1) procmail (delivering for sendmail), which seems to want to use dotlocking, fcntl and lockf locking; for whatever reasons, the compile time tests seem to disallow flock. 2) UWIMAP which according to wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/UW uses: mbox_read_locks = flock mbox_write_locks = dotlock flock 3) I want to run dovecot in the same environment as I switch over, for which the locking strategy is supposed to be (according to http://wiki.dovecot.org/MboxLocking) mbox_read_locks = fcntl mbox_write_locks = dotlock fcntl Since that same page in the wiki says. "*It's important that all software that's reading or writing to mboxes use the same locking settings.",* I had recompiled procmail so it only usedotlocking and fcntl (thus removing lockf in addition to the disallowed flock)...but now I bumped into the Migration/UW page and there looks to be a conflict. I want to be able to run dovecot (for testing) and UWIMAP (for all users/production) at the same time (but never at the same time with the same mailbox), but UWIMAP is doc'ed to use flock and Dovecot doesn't It's conceivable that the different locking strategies of UWIMAP and Dovecot don't matter because they would never be going after the same mail files (right?) but there is procmail, which has to interact with both. It appears to not use flock OK, even though the docs say it should since UWIMAP expects it, and I've disabled lockf as well. But will there be a conflict with procmail and dovecot's use of fcntl, which UWIMAP doesn't use? [Dovecot] who owns dovecot files and dirs?

...and what permissions should they have. I am thinking of /var/run/dovecot and the index directory. What ownership, group and permissions should they be? Are there any other files/dirs created for dovecot alone (not the mail folders and INBOXes); if so, how should they be owned and permed? [Dovecot] 1.0rc29: Corrupted index cache file

Hi, I have recently migrated from Courier to Dovecot, and I noticed a problem in one of my spam scripts. Here's the setup: Spam that needs to be retrained by the filter is placed in a maildir from the IMAP client. A cron job scans that maildir and if it finds a message, feeds it to the spam filter and removes it from the training maildir. Depending on whether or not the message was a spam or ham, it is either deleted or delivered to Inbox. It appears I am getting an error when the script deletes a mail message. I haven't checked if this message only occurs when a client is connected -- it's possible. [Dovecot] convert plugin failing

I'm struggling to get the convert plugin working using the Debian etch packages. When starting dovecot it was trying to create files in /.temp.hostname... convert-plugin.c looks like it has a couple of typos in it - it checks "mail" three times for NULL rather than mail, user, home. I changed this but it's getting called when these three items are set to: "maildir:/HOME_DIRECTORY_USED_BUT_NOT_GIVEN_BY_USERDB/Maildir" "dump-capability" "" I must be missing something - shouldn't the mailboxes only be converted when a user logs in? Hi all, Merging the two large recent threads, my recommendation is as follows: * The Release Candidates for 1.0 should be bug fixes only. * Each new Feature, or a Feature Set, goes in a separate branch. * That branch is tested by those who need/want that feature. * When testing is completed, the branch is merged into the main trunk. This way, we will have fairly well tested features/feature sets in the main trunk which people can fairly safe download and test and deploy, if their own tests succeeds. When the feature code is merged into the main trunk, the minor version is incremented by one (1.0.x --> 1.1.0). Bug fixes increment the revision (1.1.0 --> 1.1.1). Easy to follow, easy to package for package maintainers. Also, it's easy to write Readme's and other documentation on what's changed. (And for those who think that odd versions are for development (unstable), well, they will just wait until sufficient features have been added before they think it is stable... ) Timo's new features he sees for future versions, plan them for a 2.0 or a 1.1 or whatever version number, just don't call it 1.0.2rc1 :-) Another suggestion, is to create a Bugzilla (or similar) site for dovecot. That gives us all a chance to track changes and bug fixes. /Peter, building rc29 as I write this

[Dovecot] rc28 : can't set quotas with userdb + passwd file

I'm using dovecot 1.0 rc28 - great software! I have a virtual hosting setup, with passdb and userdb both using a passwd file. I cannot get per-user quotas put in the relevant field of the userdb to work. They appear to be completely ignored; only the setting from /etc/dovecot.conf is applied. Can anyone confirm that this is working for them? If it is, can you post the relevant bits of your configuration, please? Many thanks. Kind regards, David

Hello everyone, I am getting an error message on FreeBSD 4 after I install dovecot. To start off, I create two regular users, testuser and testuser1. I send each user emails then I install dovecot. zlib plugin allows opening gzipped mboxes as read-only mailboxes. However when using it, the mailbox name checks are bypassed so it's possible to open for example "../otheruser/somefile.gz". Only valid gzipped mbox files can be opened, and only if their name ends with ".gz". You can fix this by upgrading to v1.0.rc29 (available soon) or with this patch: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot-cvs/2007-March/008488.html I don't think this matters much though. zlib plugin is rarely used, and those who do use it are probably using Dovecot with systems users (per-user UIDs), so the imap process wouldn't have access to other users' mbox files anyway. I found this problem when I was cleaning up the code in CVS HEAD.

I cleaned up the lib-storage code a bit so that it's easier to write support for new mailbox formats. It could still use a bit of cleaning up. Anyway, I thought I'd try how easy it would be to implement Cyrus-like mail store which would consist of only Dovecot's index files and "<uid>." message files. Flags and everything else is kept only in Dovecot's index files (so it might not be the best idea to use it in production just yet). Several hours later I ended up having it working. The same with maildir and mbox: maildir: 6022 18232 165605 total mbox: 7859 23283 213686 total Benchmarks show that with small mailboxes it's a lot faster than maildir, and with larger mailboxes it's a bit faster. I also tested it against Cyrus. I found out that fetching ENVELOPE vs. specific headers gives quite a huge performance difference. Cyrus is optimized for ENVELOPE while Dovecot is optimized for specific headers. With larger mailboxes + ENVELOPE Cyrus is faster than Dovecot, while with specific headers Dovecot is always faster. Maybe I'll some day make Dovecot optimize for ENVELOPE also if it sees that client only wants to use it. BTW. Does anyone have better naming ideas than "uiddir"? Hi Timo & Co, Is there any time frame for updating the deliver LDA's sieve plugin code to that from Cyrus IMAPd v2.3.x? I ask as I'm looking for the functionality of the sieve-body extension, as described here: http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-sieve-body-06.txt This requirement has come up as we're upgrading from a Courier-IMAP/maildrop configuration that has some filtering based on message body content. As an aside, if that time frame is undefined or will be long, if I use maildrop instead as my LDA, will I loose the instant delivery notification via IMAP IDLE? After v1.0 is released, I can finally get back to sane version numbers. But any comments on which one is better: a) Postfix-style: "1.1.UNSTABLE.YYYYMMDD" -> 1.1.0 (stable) b) Odd-even numbering: 1.1.x (unstable) -> 1.2.0 (stable) With a) style the releases could be done by simply copying a nightly snapshot to releases/ directory and announcing the changes since the last release. I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

[Dovecot] Forbidding folder delete

Is there some way I can forbid the deleting of folders? I have a Thunderbird user who twice now has accidentally deleted a folder, forcing me to go fetch it from the nightly backup. I'd like to prevent this from happening again, and the easiest way to me is to block folder deletion. I'd rather do that "manually" from the shell than leave it available from the client GUI.

[Dovecot] Copy to sent mail timeouts

Hi. I'm running the dovecot IMAP that comes with Ubuntu Edgy, which is 1.0rc2. I realize this is old, but I'll ask my question in case anyone knows about this problem and how to fix it, or knows that a later version definitely fixes it. What I'm seeing is that the IMAP server works perfectly, except for occasional timeouts when the user sends an email with attachments, causing that email then to be copied to their sent mail folder. The behavior seen is that Thunderbird, for instance, will say it is copying to the sent mail and the progress goes up to 100%, but then stops and Thunderbird eventually says the action timed out. I don't see anything in any dovecot logging and the file does not appear in the sent mail. I don't have any other kind of timeout issues. I can move mails around folders, read large emails, or whatever. The problem seems worse with large emails, but some times it will copy 15 MB emails and some times it won't. I can't find that any particular email always fails. Any ideas? As a last resort, I'll build the latest rc from scratch, but I like the automatic installation, notification of security problems, etc. I get with the distro packages. Thanks Jeff

I'm not sure if it's even intended to work in this particular case, but there's a problem when chroot is explicitely defined and rawlogging is used. Rawlog respects chroot point, without being actually chrooted. I am setting up my dovecot installation and I am not getting results that I expected for the authentication phase. i'm running RHEL v 5 and 1.0-1.2.rc15 of dovecot and 2.3.3-2 of postfix. users can send mail to outside hosts, but can not receive them. i find no errors in the maillog -- i used a page from the redhat docs to configure postfix and dovecot so that they used the same mail directory... i think... any ideas on how to debug and/or fix this would be greatly appreciated. thanks, steve

Hi all, I have continuously experienced a new mail not appearing problem in Outlook 2003 on Windows XP. Using Dovecot 0.99.14 on Debian Sarge and now in 1.0rc26 and rc27. The problem exhibits itself as: Some new mail is randomly(?) not shown in my mailbox. More new mail does appear, so it's difficult to know when a message has been missed. If I restart Outlook the missed new messages will appear as unread in the order where they should have been received in my inbox. I use secure imap. I get email through my inbox (receipts from a website we're testing, at its peak maybe 2-3 a minute) that are moved into another mailbox using a rule in Outlook. These are often the messages that are missed as above, but it often includes other email as well. The mail box format is mbox on the server. The mail delivery is by exim4 from Debian Sarge. I wondered if there was a locking problem between exim4 and dovecot? My transport in exim4 for delivering the mail is: mail_spool_home: debug_print = "T: appendfile for $local_part@$domain" driver = appendfile file = /home/vmail/$domain/$local_part/INBOX delivery_date_add envelope_to_add return_path_add group = mail mode = 0660 mode_fail_narrower = false The problem is reproducable in that I see the problem occur everyday. Hi, When I try to open the attached mbox file I get the following warning in Thunderbird 1.5.0.10: 'The current command failed. The e-mail server responded: Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file'. I also tried this with squirrelmail, with the same result. The Dovecot version is dovecot-1.0.rc28, compiled from source. The attached mbox was correctly read from, and written to in earlier versions (either rc15 or rc22, I am not sure). The initial import was done (a long time ago) by copying a file from my Thunderbird profile directory. [Dovecot] odd behavior with Dovecot LDA

Okay, to convince myself that quota handling was working okay with Dovecot 1.0-rc27 on Solaris 10, I tested sending a message to an account that was purposely over-quota. The account in question had a vacation message set up. For the first test, there was no $HOME/.imap directory at all. I received the vacation message, but the message which was supposed to be delivered locally queued in Postfix (temporary failure). For the second test, I created $HOME/.imap and $HOME/.imap/INBOX directories with the owner and group set to that of the user (just to make sure the code handled things the same). Again, I received the vacation message, but the message which was supposed to be delivered locally bounced back to me after Dovecot LDA crashed: <syst0005(a)peridot.tc.umn.edu>: Command died with status 139: "/opt/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/deliver -f "$SENDER"". Command output: Segmentation Fault It appears that Dovecot LDA assumes that if .imap/FOLDERNAME exists that the index files must also exist.. I wonder what other assumptions might cause segfaults. -- Steven F. I have some files I want to transfer from Plesk qmail to Postfix with virtual mailboxes, MySQL, Maildir etc. I can add the accounts to the database manually as there are only a few of them. In the case of the mail folders, is it merely a matter of copying the mail files over, or are there some adjustments to be made to the files? I have noticed the thread about the Courier to Dovecot script and I wonder whether it may have a role in this process.

[Dovecot] Deliverm, vpopmail, and valias

I'm in the final stages of testing my e-mail server to come and I seem to have hit a roadblock. I have already accepted a message for an aliased address, but the MTA isn't going to be rewriting the envelope address, so how can I get dovecot's deliver to dereference the alias and deliver to the correct Inbox? Because of the number of other hops[1] that the message is going through, I don't want to rewrite the destination address unless I really have to, but if that is the only option, that is what I'll have to do. Thoughts? John 1) inbound e-mail hits a qpsmtpd instance which validates e-mails using several different filtering techniques. Next the mail gets fed to a dspam appliance running two Postfix queues (one before dspam and one after). Mail that isn't quarantine by dspam gets sent to the delivery server (currently running qmail) and delivered to the final destination (modulo sieve rules under deliver). Hello I'm looking at migration path from my current setup (tpop3d/courier-imap) and I seem to miss one feature - ability to ignore some subfolders for pop3. tpop3d allows me to say: maildir-ignore-folders: Spam Trash trash Sent sent-mail POP3-Invisible (would be stupid to fetch own sent-mail via pop3 again 8-) In recent tpop3d cvs version I can also use regexps like maildir-ignore-folders: ^IMAP-Only.*$. Is it possible to ignore some subfolders in dovecot per protocol (like for pop3 only and not imap) ? [Dovecot] problem with POP3 mail location when using namespaces

Hello, I have a problem (at least with 1.0rc28 and 1.0rc27) when using the following namespace definitions: namespace private { separator = "/" inbox = yes location = mbox:~/Mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u } namespace public { separator = / prefix = 0-LISTS/ location = mbox:/var/mail/lists:INDEX=~/.sharedMail/lists/index } namespace private { separator = "/" prefix = "0-MAILDIR-FOLDERS/" location = maildir:~/Maildir } IMAP access is working as expected, but when connecting with POP3(s), the (mostly empty in our case) ~/Maildir is used as mail location when it has been created (including index files) by IMAP access. If ~/Maildir does not exist/has been deleted again, POP3 uses /var/spool/mail/%u. This is independent of the private namespace section order and also an explicit "inbox = no" in 0-MAILDIR-FOLDERS namespace. Any idea if this is an configuration issue I don't understand yet or a bug? [Dovecot] rc2x seems to break Pegasus Mail

Hi guys, I upgraded from rc7 to rc24 a couple weeks ago, and noticed today that Pegasus Mail's IMAP no longer connects. So I put rc27 in, and it worked, but only for a little while... I'm not sure what the problem might be, the logs look fine, and I can still use Horde and Evolution without a problem. Pegasus Mail's error is unfortunately not helpful. Restarting rc27 didn't 'bring it back' for Pegasus. I guess I'll release rc29 tomorrow. The current changes are: + Added auth_gssapi_hostname setting. - IMAP: LIST "" "" didn't return anything if there didn't exist a namespace with empty prefix. This broke some clients. - If Dovecot is tried to be started when it's already running, don't delete existing auth sockets and break the running Dovecot - If deliver failed too early it still returned exit code 89 instead of EX_TEMPFAIL. - deliver: INBOX fallbacking with -n parameter wasn't working. - passdb passwd and shadow couldn't be used as master or deny databases - IDLE: inotify didn't notice changes in mbox file - If index file directory couldn't be created, disable indexes instead of failing to open the mailbox. - Several other minor fixes

Hello dovecot users, I have updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to apply and compile against dovecot 1.0.rc28. Not much has changed with respect to the functionality of the previous version however: ChangeLog vs v2 - Updated source to compile with dovecot 1.0.rc28, tested with rc27 (debian package) - Daemon now uses the same location for .dovecot.sieve as dovecot-lda This is typically ~/.dovecot.sieve. - If .dovecot.sieve is a regular file, it is now moved into the script storage as dovecot.orig.sieve, preventing deletion of (important) active scripts upon managesieve installation. Otherwise, it would simply be replaced by a symlink to the new active script. - Changed error handling to yield a BYE message when the managesieve daemon exits unexpectedly (upon login) before any commands are entered. Horde-ingo would wait indefinitely for a response. Hi all-- been away from the list for a few weeks so forgive me if this problem has been reported-- with the help of some of our Kerberos engineers, we tracked down why we can't authenticate our Solaris kerberos clients to Dovecot. Here's the deal: Our IT organization issued us kerberos tickets of the form imap(a)foobar.sfbay.sun.com Which I presume is their standard-- and probably not negotiable. However, the hostname of the machine is: "foobar", not foobar.sfbay.sun.com (as reported by gethostname(3c)). So when dovecot does this: mech-gssapi.c: principal_name = t_str_new(128); str_append(principal_name, service_name); str_append_c(principal_name, '@'); ---> str_append(principal_name, my_hostname); We wind up asking kerberos to look for a ticket for imap@foobar, instead of imap(a)foobar.sfbay.sun.com. Obviously we can patch the source, but I was wondering if we could have a gssapi_hostname setting in the config file? Or perhaps we could have a knob letting us globally override my_hostname? Although I don't know what side effects that could have. We have some new cores I also need to report-- I'll get on that. Hi list, I'm new on this mailing list and I'm kind of stucked at the moment. I managed to get Postfix and Dovecot working together with Amavis, OpenLDAP und SASL on Ubuntu Linux Release "Dapper Drake". The Dovecot version shipped with Dapper is 1.0-beta3 (at least, that's what the package database tells me), I also tried this with a Debian Backport of version 1.0-rc15. And here is my problem: A customer of mine needs usernames different from the mail address for his third party software to work. In other words, I need the ability to login with the username foo to get access to the mailbox bar(a)example.com. So I tried to override the mail_location property for this user with a separate mailDirectory attribute in my LDAP tree. With this configuration dovecot creates the directory /var/spool/spool/dovecot/mail/patrick if I login with the uid patrick but I wanted access to /var/spool/dovecot/mail/ekits.de/blubb If anybody has any clue what I did wrong or if I have a conceptional misunderstanding, I would appreciate every help. Hi! Compiled the latest cvs today, and noticed the changes in src/master/main.c and master-settings.c. With the versions 1.80.2.19 and 1.125.2.28 (respectively) I can not start dovecot, because it says: Fatal: dup2(stdin) failed: Bad file descriptor Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 After reverting the patch: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot-cvs/2007-March/008371.html everything is back to normal. [Dovecot] Sync of read message status between squirrelmail and outlook express

Hi, We have a Linux email server running CentOS 4.4. I have a scenario here. The users here use a mixture of outlook express and squirrel mail as their email client. The users download their mail into outlook express via pop3 but the have configured outlook express to leave a copy on the server for 7 days. 1. After downloading the mail into outlook express the users would read the mail and the mail would be set as 'READ' in outlook express. 2. Is there a way to configure dovecot so that the 'READ' status in outlook express is reflected on the message still stored on the server as well. Cause when they access via squirrel mail the message is still mark as 'UNREAD'. Any suggestions is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I try to compile the dovecot with gcc version 3.3.2 on aix. It seemed it was okay. It was working but when i try to use quota dynamic modules i get error. Edlopen(/usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib10_quota_plugin.so) failed: Could not load module /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib10_quota_plugin.so. System error: No such file or directory Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 When i check the /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib10_quota_plugin.so i see that it is a link which is pointing /usr/local/lib/dovecot/lib10_quota_plugin.so . But there is no lib10_quota_plugin.so . I try compiling it on linux debian. I see that lib10_quota_plugin.so in it is proper place. I dont know what to do. Did i something wrong? I need help Best regards

We are running Dovecot 1.0-rc27 and have run across what seems to be a fatal error (SIGSEGV) in the past few days (4 times total in past 6 days). It appears to have been 5 separate users, 5 separate remote IP addresses. We are seeing some poor performance recently that is focused around users with large mailboxes (100,000 message /INBOX, 80,000 message subfolders, etc). The performance problem manifests as very high system% utilization - basically iowait for NFS. There are two imap servers with plenty of horsepower/memory/etc. They are connected to a 3050c cluster via gig-e. Here are the mount options: rw,tcp,nfsvers=3,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,nosuid,nodev,soft,intr,noac,actimeo=0 I need to get this system% utilization brought down because it is starting to slowdown imap performance for other users (it goes up to 95% on a regular basis, with users that have folders with many messages). My thought is to try removing the noac option and bump up the actimeo value from 0 to 30. Unfortunately I don't have access to use a SLB to direct traffic to individual servers. My understanding is that the worst that can happen is index corruption (which will result in rebuilding them when it happens). Any thoughts? I'm running RC24.

[Dovecot] Unwanted INBOX. prefix issues

I have a strange problem. I installed Dovecot and had my trash folder and such in the root of my maildir, and everything was working great. I then installed SquirrelMail which created folders in with the INBOX. prefix. I manually removed these from the maildir, but the INBOX.Trash is still shown in the folder listing of Thunderbird. This leads to some strange behavior, such as the delete button not working. Is there a way I can reset the folder list, and take the INBOX.* items out? Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Kevin

Maybe best asked to Axel... I'm re-building my server from scratch (the old one was MDK 10.1 -> Mandriva 2006.0 with Postfix/Courier) and I want to install the latest versions postfix/mysql/postfixadmin/dovecot/squirrelmail. I've been building Dovecot (and postfix) from tarballs/srpm in the past so I know more or less how it all fits together. But I wonder if 'old' patches still need to be included/applied in the building of the latest rc's. I still see references to those patches in the spec file. Unfortunately the latest 'official' rpm for Mandriva (I'm running 2007.0) is rc7 and I never succeeded getting in contact with the Mandriva maintainer to ask the same question. In the Axel's AT rpm I still see some patches included but others than in the Mandriva rc7 spec file. Are those patches not already applied to the latest sources by Timo? Tnx Egbert Jan NL

[Dovecot] Bug tracking system

There are three reasons why I haven't really bothered setting up a bug tracking system for Dovecot: 1) They're all kind of annoying to use. 2) They all require a lot of stuff like PHP, SQL server, etc. which I don't really want to put into dovecot.org. 3) Probably most importantly: If people start reporing bugs in there, I'm pretty much the only person who will ever read them and reply to them. Currently when people report bugs in here, it's quite useful to have other people read them too. They may already know the bug and say they've reported it, they may have an idea what's causing it, they may know a workaround, etc. All in all, moving things to BTS would most likely cause my life to be harder and it might be more difficult to get some bugs fixed. A couple of days ago I started thinking about this and then I figured out a way to solve all of this nicely with a new and great Dovecot based bug tracking system. :) Just so I won't forget it, here's the plan: Dovecot BTS ----------- The preferred way to report bugs is to send them to dovecot-bugs(a)dovecot.org. The only thing it does is prefix the subject line with [BUG #nnn] and forward it to dovecot(a)dovecot.org. Now everyone can reply to it just as it was a normal mailing list mail. As long the subject contains the "[BUG #nnn]" prefix, it's part of the bug. Existing mailing list threads can also be turned into bugs by replying to the thread's root message with To: dovecot-bugs(a)dovecot.org. This again causes the new reply to contain [BUG #nnn] prefix. Then comes the web part. There's no SQL database or anything, everything is stored in a mailbox in the IMAP server. The mailbox contains the whole dovecot(a)dovecot.org archive. Bug metadata such as priority, status, etc. is stored using IMAP ANNOTATE extension, which allows setting key=value pairs to messages. Unfortunately Dovecot doesn't yet support that extension. Bugs' root messages contain the annotations for the whole bug thread. So to get a list of all bugs, the BTS issues an IMAP SEARCH ANNOTATE command to list all messages with some specific "bug=yes" type of annotation. For those messages then it can fetch the subject and whatever else metadata it wants. Newly created bugs don't have annotations though. To fix that, the BTS also uses ANNOTATEMORE (or is it METADATA nowadays?) extension to keep "last seen message in BTS" state in the mailbox's annotations. It then issues a SEARCH SUBJECT "[bug #" command for the new messages and does THREAD command for them to see if they're the bug root, or if they were replies to another message which should be treated as the bug root. When viewing a bug, the bug metadata comes from the annotations. Annotation history could also be kept, possibly as messages in another history mailbox. The messages for a bug can be viewed by issuing a THREAD (REFERENCES) command and showing all the mails that exist under the bug root. So, any volunteers to implement the web part, if I implement the ANNOTATE extension? :) It would actually even be possible to implement multiple frontends. All I need to do is give you access (read-only, or read-write for some) to the bug tracking mailbox, and you can use whatever frontend you wish, even a non-web one!

[Dovecot] Dovecot LDA issues

We've seen two issues come up with Dovecot LDA, both of which have caused us problems: 1) If the user's home directory does not exist, or is not owned by them, deliver fails and causes the mail message to bounce back to the originator. In our environment this happens when our user is moved to another server (where we move their files, but for up to 24 hours afterwards, continue to re-mail their /var/mail INBOX). This no longer works because the user has no home directory, causing deliver to fail with "Permission denied" when attempting to create their home directory for the purposes of creating INBOX index files. 2) If the user is over quota (in their home directory), deliver fails with a temporary error, causing requeues until the user is back under quota (which in our environment could be a long time, days). Since we've never had quotas on the user's INBOX (in /var/mail), this is a problem for us. I'd propose for both of these cases that deliver issue WARNING messages to its logs, and simply not create index files for the INBOX. If the INBOX index files already exist, and the user is over quota in /home, neither deliver nor any other Dovecot process should attempt to update them, and instead issue WARNING messages. This allows the e-mail to be delivered instead of requeued, or worse yet, rejected. Index files are supposed to make things perform better, not worse, in ALL cases. :) -- Steven F. Hi, I took a stab at editing the wiki ... the changes disappeared? I guess I was overruled. The wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA) states -m <mailbox>: Destination mailbox (default is INBOX). If the mailbox doesn't exist, it's created (unless -n is used). If message couldn't be saved to the mailbox for any reason, it's delivered to INBOX instead. I tried to add a little note that the sieve plugin takes precedence. For example if at the end of the a .dovecot.sieve there is a line like: fileinto "CompanyFolders.general"; then the -m <mailbox> is ignored. I am not sure about the use of 'stop'. -n: If the destination mailbox doesn't exist, don't create it. This affects both -m parameter and fileinfo action in Sieve scripts. The fallback is to deliver mail to INBOX. (typo: fileinto not fileinfo) My testing shows that if the mailbox does not exist then the mail is rejected like so: === Your message was automatically rejected by Dovecot Mail Delivery Agent. The following reason was given: Mailbox doesn't exist: mail-lists.debian === I like the wiki's solution better. Jim

[introduction: new to the list, used dovecot w/exim as MTA in simple ways for 2 years, blah blah blah] i'm trying to get exim to use dovecot auth with a copy of rc27 and am missing something that's probably quite simple. specifically, how does one configure the authenticators in dovecot.conf for rc27? the auth section of the default config file installed in rc27 doesn't entirely look like what i'm seeing in other documentation; instead of auth default { } i'm seeing auth = default followed by lots of standard flags prefixed by auth_, but i don't see how to set up the socket. i have the following; dovecot starts and doesn't complain but it doesn't create the socket either: auth_socket listen { client { path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-client mode = 0660 user = exim group = exim } } any suggestions? thanks, richard

[Dovecot] anonymous mailing list archive configuration?

Hi, I'd like to run a mailing list archive via IMAP like for this list but my mails are in maildir and not mbox. It's easy to add a new user that has access to the maildir that mails get stored in, and I can simply link that up to that user's inbox. It's also easy to prevent putting mail into that folder. However, one thing I'm not clear on is how to prevent that user from creating new folders. I don't think I can do that with permissions to the ~/Maildir since that user needs to be able to create files there for indizes etc. Is that possible? Should/can I write a plugin that prevents things? johannes

I'll probably release 1.0.rc28 in a few days. Would be nice to get some testing for it first. http://dovecot.org/nightly/dovecot-latest.tar.gz contains pretty much what it's supposed to be. I've now replied to all the mails I was planning on replying, excluding the few patches that are v1.1 material. If you think I forgot to reply to some mail, please resend it. I think the documentation in Wiki is finally beginning to look pretty good. All the important things are done. The only things in my "would be nice TODO" list are: - Add a new page about index files and their configuration. I'll probably do this before rc28. - PasswordSchemes and Authentication/Mechanisms are pretty heavy reading. Could be made easier to understand. Possibly also create some mechanism-specific pages describing how to configure them in Dovecot and in clients. - Design documents would also be nice, but not very useful for non-programmers and pretty big job to write them I'm planning on adding the Wiki pages to doc/wiki/ in the tarball and changing: - http://wiki.dovecot.org/* links to doc/wiki/*.txt in dovecot-example.conf - doc/variables.txt could be removed and links to it updated to doc/wiki/Variables.txt - doc/auth-protocol.txt is also already in wiki. Maybe create doc/design/ and put the AuthProtocol.txt there and other design wiki pages there as well. As for v1.0, it looks like there aren't many bug reports anymore about rc27. If there are as few for rc28, I'll release v1.0 in about a month. So unless something special happens, I'll fix only the simplest bugs after rc28 and leave the rest to v1.1/v1.0.1. Hmm. It affects both -m parameter and Sieve plugin's fileinto action - auth cache: If unknown user was found from cache, we didn't properly return "unknown user" status, which could have caused problems in deliver. - Index view syncing fixes - rc27 didn't compile with some non-GCC compilers - vpopmail support didn't compile in rc27 - NFS check with chrooting broke home direcotry for the first login - deliver: If user lookup returned "unknown user", it logged "BUG: Unexpected input" - convert plugin didn't convert INBOX

I was trying to run two instances of dovecot on the same machine, each listening on a single IP. The problem I ran into was that each time one was started or restarted, the other stopped responding. I saw the following in the logs: Mar 23 00:02:27 sentinel dovecot: Dovecot v1.0.rc27 starting up Mar 23 00:02:27 sentinel dovecot: Socket already exists: /var/run/dovecot/dict-server After I saw that, I commented out the dict section and quota from the plugins. The second line disappeared, but I could still only get one dovecot listening at a time. In the end, I went back to a single dovecot listening on all IP's, and found another way to do what I was trying to do, so all is still working for me. I'm guessing I'm the first person to try to run two dovecots on one machine. Actually, I should clarify: there was also a third, listening to none on localhost, but there only for the lda process. Dear list, I don't know if this is by design or possibly a bug, but there is a difference when removing e-mail when a user is over filesystem quota when indexing is on or off. All is working fine on our servers when indexing is on, users can remove then purge e-mail when over quota, but when we turn off indexing (by setting INDEX=MEMORY) it doesn't work. Users can remove, but not purge. And after a reload of the page the e-mail is there again. We are using Dovecot 1.0.rc15 on Debian Sarge (through backports.org) with mboxes. Hello all, Recently I have received a few complaints from users that their quota was being reported wrong. This seems to have started when I switched to quota=maildir and ignore=Trash (did both at the same time). The main reported problem is that maildirsize is not correctly updated when they delete messages. My personal hypothesis is something like this: - User moves to Trash - Trash is ignored so it is not marked on the maildirsize (?) - User purges trash - Trash is still ignored so it is still not marked (?) Resulting in a buildup of errors in the maildirsize file. Would it be a good idea to mark the maildirsize file when a file is moved to an ignored folder? I have written a managesieve server from scratch in Python. I did just enough work to get it working with avelsieve (the squirrelmail plugin), smartsieve, and KDE's sieve kioplugin. It supports the entire Internet draft. Since I didn't have a working sieve server to compare against, I'm not sure if it's 100% compatible with timsieved. Client applications seem to work okay anyway. I wrote it in such a way as to decouple how authentication is carried out and how sieve scripts are actually stored, so you could for instance modify this to work with SASL and Exim. Currently it only has code for PAM and Dovecot's LDA, because I run Postfix :). TLS support is in the code but disabled because I had problems writing a unit test for it. All my connections are from localhost anyway. http://woozle.org/~neale/repos/pysieved if anyone is interested. I haven't looked closely at Stephan Bosch's managesieve server in C but I do want to acknowledge that he has written a C managesieve server that currently exists as a patch to the Dovecot source code. Originally I've thought that this is related to INBOX field, but it turned out it happens only when you specify mbox. No idea about how sql or ldap would behave here, but global mail_location from dovecot.conf doesn't suffer from this issue (~ was expanded properly in ktrace dump). Chroot specification (/./) doesn't matter here. If I change mbox:~/Mail:INBOX=..... to mbox:/home/vmail/ppgk.com.pl/%u/Mail:INBOX=~/inbox then everything will be fine - no extra '~' dir. Thus my assumption it's not INBOX field related. Looking at ktrace, it seems that imap process is checking for the existence of ~/Mail, without expanding tilde. Then quite a bit later, it creates Mail as a "side effect" of creating Trash subdirectory. We also run two other FreeBSD machines with Sophos PureMessage for Anti-SPAM and Anti-Virus cleanup which is linked via sendmail's milter. You're going to need Procmail to link sendmail and dovecot for local mail delivery to the user's mbox or Maildir, which ever you prefer. We're using Maildir here to serve both IMAP over SSL and POP3 over SSL. If you need any help in the setup of sendmail + procmail + dovecot, just tell me. Of course, if you're more experienced with Postfix, then use it. IMHO it's not as flexible as sendmail. But YMMV. [Dovecot] GSSAPI authentication behind HA servers

Hi all, We have 2 mail servers sitting behind linux-HA machines.The mail servers are currently running dovecot 1.0rc2. Looking to enable GSSAPI authentication, I exported krb keytabs for imap/node01.domain@REALM and imap/node02.domain@REALM for both mail servers. However, clients are connecting to mail.domain.com, which results in a mismatch as far as the keytab is concerned (and rightly so). Connections directly to node01 and node02 work fine for gssapi auth. I proceeded to export a key for mail.domain.com into the same keytab for both the nodes, however, I don't think more than a single key is checked for the imap service, and authentication errors continued. [Dovecot] Preparing for sharing with ACLs

Greetings - I'm finalising the layout of our new mailstore ready for a trial service using Dovecot (switching from the UW IMAP server). This is using Maildir mailboxes, changing from our current mix of MBX and traditional Berkeley. One of the things we are often asked for is how someone can grant another access to their mailbox: eg, a Head of Department wants the Departmental Secretary to review and reply to e-mails, but not tell her the password. I understand that Dovecot doesn't provide a user-interface for setting up or manipulating these, nor the IMAP ACL extension at this time, so... Q1. Are there plans to add support for ACLs in the future, along with an end-user accessible means of setting these up and manipulating them? I also understand that it is currently possible for the Mail Admin to set up ACLs (globally and/or per-mailbox) and shared folders (I admit I'm having trouble getting my head around the latter in the Wiki a bit). I' hoping to avoid using the current "has to be done by the Administrator" setup, and instead want to plan for any future end- user interface. We are using filestore quotas for the Maildirs, so at present a user's Maildir directories and files are owned by their username (UNIX uid) and group (UNIX gid). * Naturally for filestore quotas to continue to work items need to continue to be owned by the person's username (UNIX uid). When end-user support for shared mailboxes and ACLs comes along one day (hopefully!) I assume two levels of access control are needed: 1. At the filestore level the other authorised users will need read and/or write access to the directories and files comprising the Maildir, and 2. Suitable ACLs will be needed to grant access via Dovecot to authorised persons, but not to other random people. So looking to the future, I'm therefore thinking that instead of having each user's Maildir directories and files owned by their UNIX uid and gid I should instead have them owned by their UNIX uid and a common-to-everyone UNIX gid. Eg, drwxrwx--- user1:mail directoryname -rw-rw---- user1:mail filename I realise there is an element of risk here, as we would be relying on Dovecot's security to limit access so that only authorised users can access a given person's mailbox. Is this the right approach to adopt? Or is there a better way of (one day) enabling Person A to share their mailbox to Person B but not Person C? (We need a solution that is general and based on ACLs, not one that relies on our creating custom UNIX groups and assigning people's usernames to these.) I've read the Wiki pages on ACLs and Shared Folders, but am having trouble putting the information together in my mind to (one day) solve this particular requirement. Can anyone shed any light, please? hi dovecot list help me please dovecot-1.0.r27 exim lda virtual users in ldap base i decided to start using the sieve pluging so i have to make the homes (now my homeDirectory in ldapbase is /nonexistent). there is a lot of users, so i dont wonna to make changes in every ldap record + imho the hard link to userhome in ldap - its a not good idea. so is there any way to make it easy? may be like home_location = bla-bla-bla/%n/home in dovecot.conf (or in dovecot-ldap.conf ) sorry for my english -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/

[Dovecot] corrupted transaction log error resulting in multiple deliveries

I'm finally picking my dovecot project back up now, and after upgrading rc19 to rc27, I sent a test message to an existing account which resulted in log entries like these: Mar 16 08:45:37 node7 deliver(user(a)example.com): Corrupted transaction log file /var/indexes/example/com/u/us/user/.INBOX/dovecot.index.log: Append with UID 3, but next_uid = 15368 Mar 16 08:45:37 node7 deliver(user(a)example.com): msgid=<20070316124031.8F089D39A5(a)node7.neonova.net>: save failed to INBOX Mar 16 08:45:37 node7 postfix/pipe[29267]: 8F089D39A5: to=<user(a)example.com>, relay=dovecot, delay=306, delays=306/0.01/0/0.02, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (temporary failure) So, as you can see deliver has the problem and defers delivery. Is dovecot supposed to be able to recover from a corrupted log file on its own? It repeated this until I manually wiped out the index directory (didn't try just removing the log files first, sorry). The kicker is that deliver actually did save the message to the inbox every time, so multiple copies were delivered (every time I flushed the queue until it was actually fixed, a copy was delivered). I have my mail directories on an NFS mount, and indexes on localdisk, FYI.

Hi. Earlier today I was hit with 612 login attempts in 7 minutes. They ramped up slowly, too. :-) They quickly hit the file descriptor limit. And then a login server spawned and died so quickly that dovecot just died. My question is, is there a way to throttle the number of login connections? I'm doing it in my firewall now, but it would be nice to be able to say something like "max-login-attempts: X" before we blacklist the IP (for some configurable time). yeah, I know V4.2 :-) By the way, I *really* appreciate all the effort that's gone into Dovecot. We are running Postfix 2.3.3 and Dovecot 1.0-RC27 on a Solaris 10 server. We use the Dovecot LDA for local delivery. Problems arise with looping mail whenever a user's .forward contains a reference to themselves. [Dovecot] Timeouts connecting via POP3

I'm experiencing timeouts from time to time from both Mac Mail and Outlook when connecting to my server. I originally suspected that it might be process # related, so I increased the auth & login process counts but that hasn't seemed to make a difference. I'm running 1.0rc10 which came with my DirectAdmin control panel. I'm wondering if this problem is known and was fixed in a later release? I'm waiting for instructions from the DirectAdmin folks on building a new version in case they do something special. Any ideas? Thanks!

To all, I am using Dovecot on solaris 10. Home directories are mounted using NFS. However, they are not readable by root. I compiled Dovecot from the source. I set the following environment variables: export LDFLAGS='-L/local/software/openssl/lib -R/local/software/openssl/lib' export CPPFLAGS=-I/local/software/openssl/include Then I ran gmake and the gmake install. In the server logs, when I attempt to connect to port 993 using imap over SSL, i receive the following error: dovecot: Mar 21 15:34:25 Info: imap-login: Login: user=<someusername>, method=PLAIN, rip=134.121.92.228, lip=134.121.5.141, TLS dovecot: Mar 21 15:34:25 Error: IMAP(someusername): ld.so.1: imap: fatal: libgcc_s.so.1: open failed: No such file or directory dovecot: Mar 21 15:34:25 Error: child 13085 (imap) killed with signal 9 Has anyone seen similar issues? I've just tried out Dovecot LDA. The reason I didn't want to use it before was that I found it unnecessary together with Exim, plus I wanted to use Exim's filtering. But now I wanted to see if can notice any improvement when the indexes are updated on delivery, and I saw that it's possible to use Exim filters and pass the resulting folder with -m. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but IIUC some corrections, improvements, and comments could be made on http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA. In the "Site-wide setup" section (and in dovecot.conf) it's suggested that access be restricted to the master socket somehow. The first Exim example ("System-users"), however, requires a world-writable socket. Uncomment "group = mail" and deliver will complain that setgid() fails. In this situation, the "-d $local_part@$domain" is unnecessary because then deliver will use the name of the user it's running as (it should probably have been just "-d $local_part" anyway). However, if deliver is run by root (which is by default impossible under Exim) or setuid root, then a destination user is mandatory. Oh wait, without -d the auth socket isn't used at all, only the HOME environment variable and default_mail_env are. Well, it shouldn't matter much if you're running a standard pam/passwd setup, but with a more complicated non-virtual setup I see only four solutions: Make deliver setuid root, remove root from the compiled-in FIXED_NEVER_USERS list, run deliver as a user/group that has write access to all mailboxes, or make the master socket world-writable. -- Magnus Holmgren holmgren(a)lysator.liu.se (No Cc of list mail needed, thanks)

Hi, I'm still trying to migrate a running qmail + vpopmail to sendmail + dovecot. I need the milter stuff from sendmail. I got sendmail + dovecot running using the migrated tables from the vpopmail DB, but I'm facing the UID problem in pop3. So, now I'm following the vpopmail authdb path. My questions are: - what do I need, a running vpopmail server (lib + binary, etc)? - or only the DB? So as to make sure that Dovecot Sieve's vacation system works Exim has to be forced to generate a "Reply-To:" header in the message (which it doesn't do by default). The current example for using the Dovecot LDA with Exim doesn't do this. Here is a replacement example for the local_delivery transport:- local_delivery: driver = pipe command = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d $local_part message_prefix = message_suffix = log_output delivery_date_add envelope_to_add return_path_add headers_add = Reply-To: ${if def:header_reply-to:{$h_reply-to:}{$h_from:}} #group = mail #mode = 0660 Basically, if the Reply-To: header exists than it merely gets overwritten with itself. If it doesn't then the header is created and the contents of the From header is put into it. If this is not done then the libsieve over restrictive rules (requiring a "Reply-To:" header even though the RFC doesn't require it) will not allow the vacation system to work. Hi, I'm still seeing mails being downloaded twice via POP3 in my setup, running rc27.
