[Dovecot] Dovecot cannot find passwd-file

Posted this once before, but am still having problems. I have dovecot 1.0 rc15 running with postfix 2.3 on a SLES 10 server. With local user and /etc/passwd /pam authentication my local user can retrieve mail. I am now adding a virtual domain and have postifx relaying correctly. I want to have dovecot pull passwd and userdb from two files. When setting passwd-file to /etc/dovecot/passwd the system states that the file does not exist but it does. It does not appear to be a permissions issue; is this a path issue relative to chroot? Would appreciate some input; I have found others with the same issues but have not seen a solution posted. [Dovecot] Dovecot deliver and procmail

Hi, I have site w. around 7000 users, most of which have some procmail rules (theres even .procmailrc in /etc/skel with rule to put spam into spam folder). Afaik dovecot's deliver doesnt understand procmail rules, so i'd like to ask if its possible to configure procmail so it saves mail using deliver, without modifying users .procmailrc Thanks for any pointers, Vaclav Hula

[Dovecot] Index corruption causes child process to die

My recent migration from Courier-IMAP to Dovecot has been marred by these errors: Oct 24 12:12:40 server dovecot: IMAP(juha): Fixed index file ~user/Maildir/.Geekzone/dovecot.index: first_recent_uid_lowwater 431 -> 430 Oct 24 12:12:40 server dovecot: IMAP(juha): Corrupted index file ~user/Maildir/.Geekzone/dovecot.index: Duplicate header extension keywords Oct 24 12:12:40 server dovecot: child 5786 (imap) killed with signal 11 They happen with Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 and I'm using Dovecot 1.0RC7 from the FreeBSD ports. I think the index corruption may be caused by Tbird's message filtering - I'm asking it to filter certain messages from INBOX to subfolders. When the error occurs, Tbird pops up an error message saying it can't connect to the mail server, but I don't lose any messages it seems. Hi all, ive seen a few segfaults in RC15. It's hard for me to reproduce but I was able to get a core when it happened with one of our customers. RC15 FreeBSD 4.10 X86 NFS/NetApp It's squirrelmail/webmail client. Can't reproduce it, cant turn on dovecot.rawlog because I dont know in advance which customer will hit this. [Dovecot] imap over ssh won't work

Hi, Using version 1.0.rc15 I'm trying to let Evolution connect with IMAP over SSH. When run from the command line, this is what I get: ssh host dovecot --exec-mail imap * BAD [ALERT] imap binary must not be started from inetd, use imap-login instead. ssh host MAIL=/root/Maildir/ /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap * BAD [ALERT] imap binary must not be started from inetd, use imap-login instead. When I run the same commands directly on "host", I do get a PREAUTH prompt (Logged in as root) and when I look around I find exactly the same syntaxis. Does anybody have a clue why it doesn't work? [Dovecot] IMAP folder watching plugin request

Hello Timo and list, I'm pretty sure this has been asked before but would it be possible for a generic folder watching plugin to be distributed with Dovecot? My intention for this is to be able to integrate a spam filter into dovecot. Filtering would be performed on delivery and spam put into a spam folder and then if mail was moved into or out of the folder the filter could be retrained. [Dovecot] Weird indexing problem between Thunderbird and Dovecot

Folks - I just ran across this problem; not sure how it originally happened. I noticed that Thunderbird was displaying the wrong message body when I selected a message. I tried several actions to clean up the problem (stopping dovecot and thunderbird, removing all .thunderbird/pref/ImapMail cache data, removing all dovecot index and uidlist files), to no avail. Then I noticed that somehow a core file had made it into my main inbox. I surmise that dovecot saw it as a legitimate email but thunderbird refused to count it (or some permutation thereof). (The core file had been renamed "core,2u" IIRC). Anyway, removing the offending file and (again) all cache files seems to have solved the problem. Just FYI. -- Mario

[Dovecot] help with deleted segment of email when connecting Outlook?

This group was so helpful last time I am hoping someone can HELP! We have qmail / dovecot running IMAP and a user who had all their email in their non-Outlook client (Thunderbird?). We installed Outlook 2003 and configured it with IMAP and all their email EXCEPT a three week block showed up. The three week block of email is not on their desktop and even worse, isn't on the server / in qmail - its totally gone. Does anyone have any idea of why or how this would have occured? And even better - is there any hope we could ever find this email (its not on a backup)? Hopefully, Lisa

[Dovecot] RC16 is a lot slower that RC7

I tried RC16 from RC7 and like other releases since RC7 it is significantly slower. I'm still trying to figure out why. But I have again switched back. Do new version take up a lot more ram perhaps? I'm running with a gig of ram, and I'm running a few other apps. It's not a fast computer, just an old 754 pin semptron. But the point is that RC7 runs a lot faster than RC16.

The question is addressed to Linux RPM-packagers. Hello! I was trying to rebuild rc17 binaries from dovecot-1.0-1_38.rc17.at.src.rpm taken at ATrpms <http://ATrpms.net/>. I've noticed a burst of about 12000 of these mbox-rewrite msgs in the log, spread over about 10 minutes. They are always for the same person (XXX'd out here), and have not occurred before or since. There's no evidence of device problems in the message log. People who have had "duplicate header extension" and whatever other random index file corruption problems, please see if this fixes anything: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot-cvs/2006-December/007315.html The change is also in the latest nightly snapshot (http://dovecot.org/ nightly/dovecot-latest.tar.gz). You could in general treat the latest snapshot as "pretty much the same as the 1.0.rc16 release", so some testing for it would be nice. I've updated autotools that were used to build the snapshot, does anyone have problems with compiling the snapshot? I'm going to build the 1.0rc16 release using the same autotools. rc16 has several changes intended to make Mac OS X's HFS+ happy. This is mostly because currently the only computer I have is a Powerbook. I'll get a new Linux machine in a couple of weeks hopefully. I've still about 50 unread/possibly unanswered mails. I'll try to get to them soon. Here's a list of all the important changes: * IMAP: When trying to fetch an already expunged message, Dovecot used to just disconnect client. Now it instead replies with dummy NIL data. * Priority numbers in plugin names have changed. If you're installing from source, you should delete the existing plugin files before installing the new ones, otherwise you'll get errors. * Maildir: We're using rename() to move files from tmp/ to new/ now. See http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/Maildir -> "Issues with the specification" for reasoning why this is safe. This makes saving mails faster, and also makes Dovecot usable with Mac OS X's HFS+ (after you also set dotlock_use_excl=yes, see below). + Added dotlock_use_excl setting. If enabled, dotlocks are created directly using O_EXCL flag, instead of by creating a temporary file which is hardlinked. O_EXCL is faster, but may not work with NFS. + If Dovecot crashes with Linux or Solaris, it'll log a "Raw backtrace". It's worse than gdb's backtrace, but better than nothing. + Added maildir_copy_preserve_filename=yes setting. + Added a lazy-expunge plugin to allow users to unexpunge their mails. + maildir quota: Added ignore setting to maildir quota, which allows ignoring quota in Trash mailbox. + dict quota: If dictionary doesn't yet contain the quota, calculate it by going through all the mails in all the mailboxes. + login_log_format_elements: Added %a=local port and %b=remote port - Doing a STATUS command for a selected mailbox (not a recommended IMAP client behavior) caused Dovecot to sync the mailbox silently. This could have lost eg. EXPUNGE events from clients, causing them to use wrong sequence numbers. - deliver was treating boolean settings set to "no" as if they were "yes" (they were supposed to be commented out for "no") - Running "dovecot" with -a or -n option while Dovecot was running deleted all authentication sockets, which caused all the future logins to fail. - maildir: RENAME and DELETE didn't touch control directory if it was different from maildir or index dir. - We treated internal userdb lookup errors as "user unknown" errors. In such situations this caused deliver to think the user didn't exist and the mail get bounced. - pam: Setting cache_key crashed - shared maildir: dovecot-keywords file's mode wasn't taken from dovecot-shared file. - dovecotpw wasn't working with PowerPC

hi, i use dovecot and squirrelmail wwbmail to access my mails in fc6, every thing is working ok, but the only thing quirrel mail can create new folders but can't acces or open them for example i created folder accounts by squirrelmail it was created but can't open, this is the permissions for the accounts in the ~/mail/: drwx------ 2 jaan jaan 4096 Jan 8 07:14 accounts -rwxr-xr-x 1 jaan jaan 0 Jan 8 20:35 draftbox any one can help please?

Hello everybody! I am a Linux admin trying to move my mail system based on qmail to the software which is more spam-protected: exim4 + dovecot-1.0rc15 + pgsql . I've downloaded and rebuild dovecot from src.rpm (for fc4). During the testing stage I've discovered two troubles: 1) the problem with deliver (...I'm not sure it's a really bug). Hello, we are currently using sendmail, procmail, uwimap and qpopper. We are planing to replace uwimap and qpopper with dovecot. Which seems to be a very good idea :-) But: Sendmail and Procmail will not be replaced. Now I've realized that deliver rewrites existing "From <....> ..." header lines to ">From <...> ..." and adds it's own "From "-line. I was fooling around the /var/run/dovecot directory and I noticed a lot of stale auth-worker.xxxxx sockets, probably left there by unexpected termination of old versions of Dovecot. Just to know who does what, have I to clean up the stale sockets, or a future version of Dovecot will get rid of this unused sockets? Hi, Wow, I haven't had an assert/core in dovecot in a long time. Here goes: Setup: Solaris 10, dovecot built with gcc 4.1.1, imap and imaps only. User's home directory lives on a ZFS filesystem, but I don't think that makes a difference. So does every other user here (>3K). Assert: IMAP(mulepri): file message-body-search.c: line 393 (message_body_search_ctx): assertion failed: (input->v_offset <= part->physical_pos) gdb backtrace and other poking at the core is attached. Hello! I am setting up a Dovecot mailserver for around 2000 people with: sendmail + dovecot + squirrelmail + spamassassin and some plugins. I have the Imap quota working in mboxes with this quota commands: plugin { # 10MB quota limit quota = dirsize:storage=10240 } It worked good in Squirrelmail, but the person that only use some imap program (outlook, eudora) don't get the info when theirs account will be full of mail. So can someone give me a good script for a automatic mail. I want to send a mail to a user when they are nearly exceeded their limits, so they can start cleaning theirs account. Are this possible or how should I solve this problem? /Andreas

Greetings all, I (nor anyone else) am suddely unable to read mail. Dovecot dumps the following in it's log: # BEGIN LOG ENTRIES # dovecot: Jan 07 18:15:52 Info: imap-login: Login: user=<username>, method=PLAIN, rip=::1, lip=::1, TLS dovecot: Jan 07 18:15:52 Error: IMAP(username): file istream-raw-mbox.c: line 499 (istream_raw_mbox_get_body_size): assertion failed: (rstream->mail_size != (uoff_t)-1) dovecot: Jan 07 18:15:52 Error: child 1584 (imap) killed with signal 6 # END LOG ENTRIES # NOTE: 'username' represents the users name at that time. The users subscribed to folders all show up. But no mail is visable. Dovecot is leaving username.lock files in /var/mail as well. It doesn't do this on my other servers running dovecot. They are using older versions of dovecot tho. Does anyone know what might be causing these problems? I want to switch away from bincimap, and I am having some trouble getting dovecot up and running. Something isn't working (I suspect it's a permissions problem) but the logs aren't really telling me anything interesting. I can authenticate and get a list of folders, but when I try to select a folder, I get the "Internal error" message that tells me to check the server logs. Trying out the post-login scripting Timo added recently. Wanting to run a SQL query, as detailed in the example on the Wiki. However, my "USER" env variable is set to "OK" instead of the username. DOVECOT_VERSION=1.0.rc16 RESTRICT_GID_FIRST=127 USER=OK All the other variables (MAIL, HOME, etc) are fine with the correct username. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks, -c

Hi, Since I installed rc15 I'm seing the following errors in logs of a server with several hundreds of pop3 and imap users. All the indexes have been erased and recreated after installation. [Dovecot] Failed proxy auth drops connection for IMAP/POP3 proxy in 1.0-RC15

Hello, I was seeing an odd behavior in a proxy-only configuration of dovecot. When a user entered an incorrect password in either IMAP or POP3, the Dovecot connection would be immediately dropped, sometimes with the auth failure message, sometimes without (a timing issue). I believe I have tracked down the cause to the code commented out in the attached diff. It appears that the proxy handlers are giving the client the go-ahead to attempt authorization again and then dismantling the proxy session. I believe the correct behavior would be to allow LOGOUT or QUIT to end the session and do the tear-down in client_destroy. The commented code all gets executed (with more error checking) in client_destroy, so there shouldn't be any memory leaks that I can see. Please advise if this seems correct or let me know of a different method of fixing. Thunderbird does 'Bad Things (tm)' when the connection is dropped without an authorization failed message... It doesn't re-prompt for the password and the user appears to have correctly authenticated, but the session just sits and no mail can be retrieved. Hi gentlemen! After running for six month Dovecot 0.99.14 I decided to upgrade to 1.0rc15. Actually Dovecot is running under Slackware Linux 10.2 and I got the package from http://www.linuxpackages.net. Problems? Yes, one! When I try to startup Dovecot program hung: Fatal: Can't resolve address no: Name or service not known I'm not a Dovecot or IMAP guru and I can't imagine what kind of address number (I think is complaining about the machine's IP address) or "name" or "service" that it doesn't know! I googled for the entire afternoon for someone that meet the same problem but I got no interesting clues... Yesterday I installed also iptables and I thought the two things are related so I disabled iptables but... nothing! I'm architecting my system so that my internet facing SMTP is Postfix, but the mail folders live on a different machine. We are having problems with the latest Dovecot 1.0 (RC15) regarding file descriptors > 255 being handed off to fdopen() via crypt() via PAM(?). This is a problem on Solaris 10 due to the fact that the stdio library does not support file descriptors > 255 (in order to remain binary-compatibile with older binaries). I have tested the fact that this removes the >255 fd limitation in Solaris 9/10. 3) Has anyone even run into this problem on Solaris? I imagine anyone with more than 250 or so simultaneous IMAP/POP sessions would have had to run into it by now. 4) Anyone have any suggested workarounds (besides compiling in 64-bit mode)? We have upwards of 4500 simultaneous IMAP connections alone on some of our servers (running UW IMAP still), so we obviously need to address this problem before we can fully deploy dovecot in our environment. -- Steven F. I am running Dovecot 1.0rc15 on NetBSD 3.1 with only a few connections. It is built from pkgsrc-2006Q3, with mail/dovecot/ updated to HEAD. kqueue is a default build option - I haven't tried without yet. Mail directories/indexes are on a Linux 2.6.16.29 NFS file system, I have set these options and it performs well: mmap_disable=yes lock_method=fcntl FYI. rc7 had very high CPU use with the same options, which rc15 seems to have fixed :-) I also have this problem with dovecot-nightly-20060225 (1.0beta3) on NetBSD 2.1RC3 using a local ffs file system. I've just installed dovecot and am trying to use it to access my Maildir folders. Unfortunately: 1 SELECT INBOX 1 NO Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. Just a quick question, nothing broke. I setup about 5 virtual servers. It's great! I can define which protocols to listen on per server. Just curious why I can specify a unique "login_dir" per server, but not a unqiue login_greeting? Appears dovecot always shows the first login_greeting from the first virtual server. We're in the process of migrating from mbox over to maildir. I'm running into a problem with the proxy and timeouts. Appears the idle timeout is set to 60 seconds. This is a bit too low for some of our large mbox files :( Any plans on adding the: #define CLIENT_LOGIN_IDLE_TIMEOUT 60 #define AUTH_REQUEST_TIMEOUT to the .conf file to be tunable on the fly? I ended up just patching the couple of files in question, but it'd be nice.. Cassidy

Setup: MySQL 5.0.22 Qmail Plesk 7.5 DoveCot v1.0 RC15 The problem: I setup sql.conf for user query and password query. I tried different ways, DoveCot always says "Authentication failed". [Dovecot] Error reading configuration file

Good day, I seem to be having an issue using dovecot 1.0 rc15. I compiled the source with the following configure command: CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/local/include/mysql" LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/lib/mysql" -lmysqlclient" ./configure -with-mysql -with-sql-drivers=mysql Did make and make install and set the dovecot-example.conf to dovecot.conf and tried running the program and got the following error: Error: Error in configuration file on line 50: expecting '=' Line 50 of the default config is a comment, which struck me as odd. So, I uninstalled and tried building with no options. I did a make uninstall, removed the /usr/local/lib/dovecot directory did make and make install and tried the program. This time it didn't crash about the config file, but the mail.err log notes that the child processes died on an error 89, apparently unable to figure our what pam was. I'm wondering why the thing seems to work if I do not build for mysql but if I want mysql, it breaks in the manner it does? Is it a bug, or am I doing it wrong (which is a real possibility). Hi Folks, I'm hoping some one can set me straight here please. Postfix 2.1.5 Dovecot 0.99.11-2 I have Postfix set up on a new box with Virtual Domains and Virtual Users using MailDir format with their mail homes in /var/spool/mail/<domain>/<user> I want Dovecot to login using PAM Authentication. The idea is to host multiple domains which each have multiple aliases which resolve to one email account for their respective domain but using a user name which actually _is_ a system user. So I might have; jo(a)abc.com joe(a)abc.com joey(a)abc.com pete(a)abc.com peter(a)abc.com jo(a)xyz.com joe(a)xyz.com joey(a)xyz.com pete(a)xyz.com peter(a)xyz.com where 'joe' and 'peter' are both system users each with mail homes of; /var/spool/mail/abc.com/joe /var/spool/mail/abc.com/peter /var/spool/mail/xyz.com/joe /var/spool/mail/xyz.com/peter In my dovecot.conf, I have; auth_userdb = static uid=89 gid=89 home=/var/spool/mail/%d/%u auth_passdb = pam If I login with just 'joe', I get; Fatal: chdir(/var/spool/mail//joe) failed with uid 89: Not a directory Fair enough, that sounds logical to me. But if I then login with 'joe(a)abc.com', I get; PAM: pam_authenticate(joe(a)abc.com) failed: Authentication failure So it appears Dovecot is checking PAM for 'joe(a)abc.com' rather than just 'joe'. Hi, I am new to this list and to dovecot. Forgive me if I ask long discussed items. I managed to install postfix and dovecot 1.0.rc15 on a Debian Sarge server out of the backports. It works so far, I can send emails via smtp to postfix, they are stored in the virtual mailboxes of some users, and I can get them via IMAP from dovecot. However, in dovecot.conf I configured mechanisms = plain login digest-md5 cram-md5 when I connect to the server via telnet 143, I get this: 2 CAPABILITY * CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 SASL-IR SORT THREAD=REFERENCES MULTIAPPEND UNSELECT LITERAL+ IDLE CHILDREN NAMESPACE LOGIN-REFERRALS STARTTLS LOGINDISABLED 2 OK Capability completed. Is there a way to configure logging to indicate what connection type was used to authenticate? I'd like to be able to tell from the logs whether the user used STARTTLS on port 143 or an SSL-wrapped connection on port 993. [Dovecot] Ampersand in Folder names causing folders to disappear?

Hi All, Dovecot 1.0.rc7 Not sure if this is a problem with Outlook, or with Dovecot, or to do with encoding in Linux. Whenever a user enters an ampersand into an IMAP folder name, it dissapears from outlook. These folders appear on the ext3 filesystem as &- for example drwx------ 5 mailusers mailusers 4096 2006-10-10 17:54 .INBOX.Networks.London Networks.NDCs.WH&-P joint working Any pointers or previous experience anyone has of this would be very gratefully received. [Dovecot] "Not connected to database" MySQL errors

I've been in the process of moving my pop3 proxy over to the dovecot proxy. I have a ton of users using pop3 still, and am seeing these errors popup within a minute or so of the connection to the database: Password query failed: Not connected to database Eventually the auth-worker will reconnect to the database and things will go on normal for another minute or two, then the same issue occurs. I'm runing MySQL 5.0.22 on FreeBSD 6.1. I upgraded to 5.0.27, however I started getting the: "Password query failed: Commands out of sync; you can't run this command now" error instead. So I downgraded until I could figure out this issue first. I've tried connecting to localhost, /tmp/mysql.sock, and a remote server and all exhibit the same problem. The MySQL idle timeouts shouldnt come into play because I'm constantly having users check their accounts. Any insights will be useful, Thanks! FTR, we use both Mail.app and Thunderbird. Note that in the Mail.app preferences, I have a blank IMAP Path Prefix. I'm using Dovecot 1.0_rc15 on Gentoo, and Mail.app from OS X 10.4.8, Thunderbird 1.5.0.9. With the old courier setup, in Mail.app I would see a top level Inbox folder, with an inbox icon'd folder underneath that representing the IMAP account. That IMAP account subfolder would be the inbox of that account. Under that, I'd see all the subfolders for that account. Something like: Inbox Account1 Folder1 Folder2 ... Account2 FolderA Outbox Drafts Sent Junk SmartFolder1 SmartFolder2 Note that a straight copy from the courier Maildir leaves me with directories like ~/Maildir/.Folder1 and ~/Maildir/.Folder2 -- IOW, they do not have .INBOX. prefix. I tried adding a "namespace private" section, with separator, prefix, and inbox values as specified in the docs. This gives me the same layout in the Mail.app u/i as with Courier, but there's a big problem: none of the folders under Account1 have any contents. The folders are there, and in the right location, but they have zero messages (even though they certainly have messages in the filesystem). Nothing in the Dovecot log file indicates any problem. But if I hover over say Folder1 in the Mail.app u/i, I see a popup message like: Mail was unable to open this mailbox on the server "imap.example.com". The server error encountered was: Unknown namespace Moving over to Thunderbird though, I see exactly what I want to see. Top level expandable is the account, with Inbox under that, which expands to all my folders. Of course Thunderbird supports subscriptions, which Mail.app does not, so I only see the folders I've subscribed to. Clearly, there's some weird interaction between Mail.app and Dovecot. Next, I tried removing the 'prefix' value from the "namespace private" section, and restarted Dovecot. Now the Mail.app u/i is different, but all the folders have their contents back! The u/i now shows: Inbox Account1 Account2 FolderA Outbox Drafts Sent Junk SmartFolder1 SmartFolder2 Account1 Folder1 Folder2 IOW, all of account1's folders live under a separate expandable section below the top level Inbox expandable (that section has a little world icon instead of the little inbox icon). Account1's inbox lives in a different section from its folders, but it has no subfolders. Looking back at Thunderbird, I notice that all the subscribed folders are now at the same level as the Inbox, just under the account name. I.e. Account1 Inbox Trash Folder1 Folder2 ... I suppose I can live with the Mail.app behavior sans the prefix setting in the namespace section, but it's not ideal. I'd really like to know why Mail.app has a problem with this! Why are the folders there but the contents empty? Is there any way to increase the logging that Dovecot does to understand what the Mail.app client is sending and why Dovecot is sending back that error? This got us further (upwards of 300 concurrent users), but we are now running into what appears to be a full listen queue (connections are not rejected, but rather slow in being established). What I would like to know is if anyone else out there runs with large numbers of concurrent IMAP sessions via Dovecot and has run into problems. If so, did you have to up your fd limit w/ulimit? Hi All, I have dovecot working wonderfully on a qmail/vpopmail, but I've noticed my 'lastauth' is never filled in.. If I use vpopmail's pop, and auth to that, then 'lastauth' is updated. It just seems weird that if dovecot is using the vpopmail lib, that lastauth wouldn't be updated. Has anyone else run into this? Thanks Rick

Hi, I have just started using Dovecot (1.0.10) SASL behind my Postfix (2.3.3). Everything works fine, as long as I send the SMTP AUTH command manually. When using M$ Outlook (2000 and 2003) and Outlook Express 6, authentification always fails. Turning on the Dovecot auth debug on reveals the reason: Dovecot SASL expects, in accordance with the standards, the following format of the SMTP AUTH command (using the PLAIN auth mechanism): AUTH PLAIN base64_encode("username\0username\0password") whereas the M$ clients send as the second argument only base64_encode("username\0password"), which naturally leads to authentification failure. Postfix apparently does not play any role in this game, as it simply passes the received command arguments to dovecot. Before I start hacking the source myself, I just wanted to ask if somebody has a patch for this M$ shortcoming - as the damned M$ clients are very much spread, I would assume this should be the case... From its interface I can only see Sent, Trash and Drafts. Is this a folder naming problem, a configuration issue or what? How can you solve these issues with ./configure? checking whether size_t is signed... configure: error: cannot run test program while cross compiling See `config.log' for more details. [Dovecot] Correct naming scheme for dovecot / squirrelmail subfolders?

Hello, I am running dovecot 1.0-0_34.rc15 and squirrelmail 1.4.8-2 on a Centos 4 server. Right now all messages are delivered to maildir /var/mail/vhosts/virtual_mail_root/, which has its cur, tmp, new subdirectories. I need to (re) configure postfix, dovecot and squirrelmail so that email is filtered and dovecot serves different boxes to squirrelmail, that is when I log in in squirrelmail I see: Inbox work (5) friends (6) lists (35) Sent Trash Spam that is every subfolder listed under Inbox with the number of unread messages. Now, I do know how to filter incoming email in different folders with postfix. The part still missing, in spite of several online searches, is the correct _naming_ and nesting of all the new mailboxes. In other words, if now everything goes into /var/mail/vhosts/virtual_mail_root/ : 1) what is the currect _name_ to give to the future "work" inbox ?? /var/mail/vhosts/virtual_mail_root/work/ /var/mail/vhosts/virtual_mail_root/INBOX.work/ what else? 2) which parameters must be changed and how in dovecot and/or squirrelmail (or any IMAP client in my home PC) so that folders are recognized and displayed as I wish? Hello, I have an account (called awesome) that does not have access to some public shared folders. I can use this account from Mozilla Thunderbird, but I cannot use it from Outlook. I opened /var/log/maillog. Why outlook wants to open these folders? I only clicked on "Inbox", it should only open "Inbox", am I right? Outlook says "Could not select 'Inbox' on the IMAP server. You might try refreshing your folders list to synchronize with the IMAP server." But this is a lie. It tried to open many other folders, not just "INBOX". I think that my dovecot configuration is okay. I have different public and private folders. Some users can access all of them, others cannot. Using different groups of users, I can distribute permissions without problems. But I cannot make dovecot "hide" shared folders. Nor can I force all of my users to use Thunderbird. I'm running Dovecot on a Debian system which recently has been failing on an assert(). I have a spam mailbox that if I try and open (from any client), the imap process dies and this is written to the error logs: Dec 21 18:57:11 theronge imap(mronge): file imap-bodystructure.c: line 278 (part_parse_headers): assertion failed: (part->physical_pos >= input->v_offset - start_offset) Dec 21 18:57:11 theronge dovecot: child 28911 (imap) killed with signal 6 I had this same issue with my Inbox a few weeks ago, so I moved all the e-mail out and moved each piece back in one by one, in order to determine if a piece of mail was causing the issue. As soon as all my mail was moved back in, the issue went away and I was able to load my Inbox as usual. I still have the same issue with my spam mailbox, is there anything particular I can do to help debug this issue? In the past I've rm'ed all the mail in my spam mailbox and that fixes it. One thing that may be related is that I only noticed this issue after I had setup Spambayes, which does it's work via procmail. The mailboxes that I've had the issue with, all had headers that contain a Spambayes header, usually like so: X-Spam-Score: 26 X-Spam-Score: 0.6 (/) Sender: mailman-bounces(a)acm.uiuc.edu Errors-To: mailman-bounces(a)acm.uiuc.edu X-Spam-Score: 0.1 (/) X-Authenticated-Sender: X-Spam-Details: rule=cautious-plus_notspam policy=cautious-plus score=26 mlx=26 adultscore=0 adjust=0 reason=mlx engine=3.1.0-0611300000 definitions=main-0612060023 X-Spam-OrigSender: mailman-bounces(a)acm.uiuc.edu X-Spam-Bar: *** X-Spambayes-Classification: spam; 1.00 X-Spambayes-Trained: spam I'm not sure if it's related, but it's a shock in the dark on my part. I hate asking questions on mailing lists, but I've exhausted my googling and FAQ trawling skills. If I've missed the pertinent doc, please tell me where to RTFM. Environment: I'm running postfix 2.3.2 on a Solaris 10 server. Mail goes into standard mbox format in /var/mail. Users can access their mail via shell (pine, mutt), POP3 or IMAP, and the pop3/imap server is dovecot-1.0.rc15. Problem: For a few users, mail occasionally fails to deliver. The mail is accepted by smtpd, passes cleanup and qmgr without incident. When it gets to local delivery, though, local complains that "cannot open file: Permission denied". [Dovecot] Sizing login_process_size and login_processes_count?

Any suggestions on sizing login_process_size and login_processes_count for a server expected to be doing 100 to 200 simultaneous connections? Is there a way to separate login_processes_count between imap and pop? I would like to have at least 50 imap processes ready, but we rarely have any more than 5 to 10 pop connections. Would be a shame to have 40+ pop login processes doing nothing most of the time. For now did login_process_size = 96, but with an average of 100 to 200 and some rare ocassion of 300+ connections I am wondering what is a reasonable number for login_process_size.

I have a working Dovecot + LDA + Maildir setup and am looking to implement sieve with it. The examples that I have seen seem to be for mbox. Does sieve work with maildir? Looking to move mails marked as spam to a spam folder. Also we have a feature we offer to send spam to a different account in the domain. Could this also be done with sieve?

I suspected as much, though I had hoped that there was an easy applicable solution. Sadly my MS-using clients are reluctant at best to change their applications, flawed as they may be, so I guess they'll have to live with things as they are for now. MS really should fix their apps, but that's a topic for a discussion of it's own. I use a mysql-backend, and suspect I could change the login-call to match whatever Outlook or Entourage choose to send, but that would be difficult to make consistent enough to be truly workable, I think... [Dovecot] NTLM authentication woes

Hi all, I have set up dovecot to use a number of different authentication- mechanisms, which are all working as expected from well-behaved clients. However, MS Outlook on Windows and MS Entourage X on Mac OS X refuse to connect using NTLM. Outlook Express on Windows seems to be working fine, and NTLM authentication works from within OS X Mail.app as well. Turning on auth_debug and auth_verbose has led me to discover that MS Outlook uses the users full name as login, instead of whatever is entered in the account-information - if the user "John Doe" has the login "jd(a)domain.com", Outlook sends "John Doe" instead. This of course fails. Strangely enough, if I turn off "Use Secure Authentication" from within Outlook, the login-name from the account- information is used as it should be. From MS Entourage, the problem is similar but not identical. Here, the login is sent as "jd(a)domain.com/jd". I have worked around the problem for now by instructing my clients to use SSL-connections and disabling "Secure Authentication", but would like for everyone to be able to log on without using SSL (due to the returning questions regarding my self-signed certificate). Hi, perhaps I should post this in a Postfix forum but I'll give it a shot: I want my accounts sorted under /home/vmail/[domain]/[username] (and I managed to get Dovecot to look for mail there with %d and %n ), but how do I tell Postfix to sort the mail? I can't figure out how to do it. The virtual_mail_base is /home/vmail/ but there I get a bunch of folders in the form [username]@[domain]. I use mysql for the virtual mailboxes if that matters. [Dovecot] Feature request: don't allow subscriptions to deleted mail boxes

Hello, Due to Thunderbird's mailbox deletion problem I was able to remove a mailbox while keeping the subscription. This was hugely annoying as Thunderbird is totally incapable of removing the subscription, even though the mailbox is long gone. It took me a while before I found a work around: I had to actually log in and remove a line from the .subscriptions file. You will probably get the same problem when you manually delete or rename a mailbox. So here is my feature request: please check for subscriptions to non-existing mail boxes and delete these when found. I am not sure what events would be appropriate for triggering the check, but I am sure there are some. Environment: - Dovecot 1.0 rc15 - SuSE Linux 10.0 - Thunderbird 1.5 Regards, Erik. PS. Hello all, I am trying to figure out why I am can't seem to access any of my mailboxes that I moved from my OS X machine using UW-IMAP and I followed the directions on the wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/MissingMailboxes) to try and figure this out. I believe based on what I saw that my client seems to be the problem, but my question is. Can anyone tell me what the difference between (\NoInferiors) and (\NoInferiors \Marked) All of my mailboxes showed up when I telnet'd to my IMAP server but I noticed some had that tag and some didn't and I'm just wondering if I should be concerned with the difference? [Dovecot] Dovecot killing OpenLDAP

Hi all, For some reason, dovecot is holding a connection up, so we can't shutdown our directory server. OpenLDAP just sits there waiting for the thread to finish. Our OpenLDAP logs show (binding example and shutdown): connection_input: conn=1 deferring operation: binding daemon: shutdown requested and initiated. conn=1 fd=12 closed (slapd shutdown) slapd shutdown: waiting for 1 threads to terminate Sometimes the IMAP connection is also dropped. We are storing our users in the directory for passdb and userdb, no prefetch enabled. Running rc15 on FC6. This is crashing OpenLDAP 2.3.31 (bdb 4.2.52), as it won't shutdown. [Dovecot] NEWBIE: Package Requirements List?

I can't seem to find a succinct listing of the packages (and optional packages) required to compile dovecot. I see references to various RDBMS's, but nothing that says I actually _require_ one, etc. I see references to openssl, but similarly, I don't see that it's technically required. Is there a link I'm missing that indicates the pre-conditions (pre-installed/configured software) before compiling and linking dovecot? Thanks in advance! -AJ

[Dovecot] First Login (Thunderbird) Aborted in RC15?

Not sure if this is anything to worry about. Just upgraded to RC15 to do some testing, and like always, I monitor the logs when I do this. I restarted the server (basically a clean install, uninstalled RC2, installed RC15, same config file), and then opened Thunderbird. Hi gang, We just yum updated BQ server and now use dovecot instead of imapd/pop3 with a slight config all is well accept for one of our users that has a fancy yahoo account that allows them to pop other accounts into it. [Dovecot] dovecot lda truncates messages

I'm running dovecot 1.0.rc2 (package from ubuntu 6.10) and use the dovecot lda 'deliver' (also a package from ubuntu 6.10 with sieve filtering) to deliver messages to maildir. Everything works well, until I discovered a truncated message this week. The problematic message is a message bounced by the majordomo mailinglist software. I think the problem is related to the fact that the message body is another mail message (including the original headers and body). I attached two (scramled) versions of the message. The first one (message-normal.txt) is the file which is delivered to the maildir by the built-in postfix lda. The second one (message-truncated.txt) is delivered by the dovecot lda. [Dovecot] Configuration Question.

Hi Everyone. I have recently installed dovecot for the first time on a RHEL3 server. I have it working for the most part, but am a bit baffled by part of the configuration, something that I am sure I am just doing incorrectly. I can successfully access my normal mailbox which is in /var/spool/ mail/username, but I also want to create mail folders, and that's the problem I am having. I want the folders to live in ~/mail/ I have tried default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u and default_mail_env = maildir:~/mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u What on earth am I doing wrong? I'm sure it's something small that I just don't understand. Thanks James

[Dovecot] auto-detection of user mailbox type

The config file indicates that if mail_location is empty, dovecot will try to find the mailboxes automatically (and by implication determine if the user is using mbox or Maildir format). But if the mbox inbox is non-standard (I have procmail delivering to ~/.mail) then one needs to specify mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=~/.mail and presumably dovecot will no longer try to determine what each user is doing. I'd like to slowly convert users from mbox to Maildir (putting DEFAULT=Maildir/ in the users' .procmailrc accomplishes that from the delivery side) and have dovecot still automatically figure out which way to work, based on finding ~/Maildir (or not). Somehow I don't think mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:mbox:~/mail:INBOX=~/.mail is going to do what I want. I saw the example on multiple mailboxes using namespaces, but I confess I'm not clear on that especially with ragard to the INBOX setting. I know I can set mail_location on a per-user basis using the userdb (eg ldap) but was hoping to avoid that. Is there a way to specify the details of the mbox configuration, but have dovecot instead use Maildir if that exists? [Dovecot] Lazy expunge plugin

There's now a plugin called lazy_expunge in CVS. Instead of EXPUNGE expunging the mails directly, they're moved to a mailbox with same name in another namespace where user can still copy the mails back. Also DELETEd mailboxes are moved to another namespace. See http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Lazyexpunge for more information. This is for Dovecot 1.0.rc15 from Debian Backports on 3.1 Stable, x86; Filesystems are local reiserfs; IMAPs client is KMail 1.9.5 Non-default settings in dovecot.conf: protocols = imaps ssl_cert_file = /etc/dovecot/mail.cert.pem ssl_key_file = /etc/dovecot/mail.key.pem mail_location = maildir:/var/mail/ambrosia.plus.com/%n mail_extra_groups = mail first_valid_uid = 1000 first_valid_gid = 1000 umask = 007 maildir_copy_with_hardlinks = yes To reproduce:- 1. Using your IMAP client with two IMAP accounts, copy a message from a folder in one account, to a folder in the other account 2. See that the newly created message file is -rw------- If a message is moved between folders on the _same_ account, however, the group permissions are preserved (ie not masked off). Hi, i have a mail server with many users and i am using dovecot as pop3 server. I was wondering if there is a way to detect the last date each user logged in to the server for retrieving his mail.
