[Dovecot] quota plugin feature request

Hi am having an issue with the quota plugin To reproduce: - have a mailbox close to its quota limit (say 10 MB), and a large email in the inbox (say 6 MB) - use Squirrelmail or Thunderbird to delete the email The operation fails, as by default the email client seems to try and copy the message into the Trash before deleting it from the inbox, and dovecot will correctly deny the copy operation as the quota will be exceeded if the message is copied... Because of this, I am wondering if it is possible to have an option for the quota plugin to track, but not enforce the quota. This is because I don't require quota enforcement on IMAP operations, as Postfix will enforce quota on incoming mail anyway. Attached is a quick hack job I did on the plugin to strip out the enforcing functionality, but it would be great if this could be a configurable option.. [Dovecot] slow attachments loading

when i browse imap with thunderbird, attachments are loadin/downloading really slow although they are size around 2Mb, it takes up to half minute to get it ..really annoying (server is in the same network as client) any idea why is so slow?

Hi all., I am uing dovecot rc7 and dovecot-sieve both compiled from source. If I test sieve with feature redirect require "redirect"; redirect "user@domain"; keep; log says "sieve parse error: line 1: Unsupported features in require line" Is this normal? Thanks !

[Dovecot] dovecot ignoring config file contents -- istream.c problem?

Hello! This is my first time trying to run dovecot so maybe I've overlooked something, but I'm having a hard time running dovecot. First of all, it's worth noting that I'm trying to run dovecot on an embedded platform: the target architecture is mipsel; I have patches for the 2.4.18 kernel with special support for the board so I'm still using the 2.4.18 kernel. My C library is uClibc (I forget which version; will look it up later). The compiler I'm using is GCC 2.96. Anyway, after some struggling, I got dovecot to compile. These are my configure options: ./configure --prefix=/home/marko/ovis/myfirm/tmp/ --build=i686-linux --host=mipsel-uclibc-linux --disable-static --disable-rpath --disable-ipv6 --with-pic --with-notify=none --without-shadow --without-pam --with-checkpassword --without-bsdauth --without-vpopmail --without-ssl --without-pop3d --without-docs dovecot compiles and runs, but no matter what I put in dovecot.conf, it says something like "SSL support not build in but ssl_disable=no". I've even tried putting garbage into the config file (like hello=test ; on my desktop dovecot complains on that line, it is completly ignored on my embedded device). But when I delete the config file, dovecot complains. So I've done some printf-debugging in lib-settings/settings.c, and fount out that: control flow reaches the line input = i_stream_create_file(fd, default_pool, 2048, TRUE); but then no single iteration of the while loop is executed. Do you have any idea what could be wrong here? Any help is greatly appreciated ! Thank you. Pavol Marko

Hello, I've had a look through past messages and I think this has been brought up but I'm not sure what the outcome of it was. I'm trying to use quotas with a MySQL dict backend. I am using Dovecot version 1.0.rc6-1 from the Debian Testing package on a x86 machine. My dovecot.conf file has the following entries which I took from the Wiki: dict { quotadict = mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-quota.conf } plugin { quota = dict:storage=10240 proxy::quotadict } and my dovecot-dict-quota.conf looks like the following, again from the Wiki: connect = host=127.0.0.1 dbname=mail user=<user> password=<passwd> table = quota select_field = current where_field = path username_field = username and my MySQL table is as follows: create table quota ( username varchar(255) not null, path varchar(255) not null, current integer, primary key (username, path) ); Now with this setup, the query for looking up the current quota appears in the MySQL logs as: SELECT current FROM quota WHERE path = 'quota/storage' AND username = 'neil(a)example.com' and the query for Inserting/Updating the quota is: BEGIN;INSERT INTO quota (current, path, username ) VALUES ('quota/storage', 0, 'neil(a)example.com') ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE current = current + 0;COMMIT With latter query, it appears to be trying to insert 'quota/storage' into `current` and 0 into `path`. This seems to be the wrong way around. Is that correct? If I change my dovecot-dict-quota.conf file to read: connect = host=127.0.0.1 dbname=mail user=<user> password=<passwd> table = quota select_field = path where_field = current username_field = username the two queries now look like: SELECT path FROM quota WHERE current = 'quota/storage' AND username = 'neil(a)example.com' and BEGIN;INSERT INTO quota (path, current, username ) VALUES ('quota/storage', 0, 'neil(a)example.com') ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE current = current + 0;COMMIT Although the latter query now works as expected and does update the quota in the database, the former query is now incorrect. [Dovecot] Using Dovecot SASL with postfix

I'm trying to use Dovecot SASL with postfix 2.3.3 and when trying to send mail I get the debug output below. I don't know enough about whats going on to know where the problem is but something clearly is not right. I would send the configurations for postfix and dovecot except they are clearly talking to each other so I kinda doubt its a configuration issue. The machine can afford to be down for an hour or two at a time for testing stuff if needed. Hello, It is my first post on this list and I hope someone will be able to help. I have installed dovecot on FreeBSD 6.1. Everything works fine but I wanted to create a way to accept mail to a few virual users and decied to use and example from http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualhostingWithExim auth = default auth_userdb = static uid=500 gid=500 home=/home/dovecot/users/%u auth_passdb = passwd-file /home/dovecot/passwd auth_user = dovecot I altered the uid and gid and made sure I have the directories ready and passwd file ok. Although everything appears to be working fine, I see the following entry in my log file each time someone logs on via the IMAPS service (all other services are disables: POP, IMAP, etc.): ========== Sep 6 02:57:00 mgw1 dovecot: Logins with login process UID xxxx (user someone(a)example.com) not permitted (see login_user in config file). ========== Any idea what this log entry means and is there a config setting I need to adjust to stop these log entries (Dovecot version 1.0.rc7)? Our imap/pop service is moving from UW imap to dovecot 0.99.11 on RHEL4. This is for around 200 users with lots of different email clients, e.g.: Windows: outlook, outlook Express, eudora, thunderbird, netscape OS X: mail, eudora, thunderbird Unix/Linux: evolution, thunderbird, pine, mutt Web: squirrelmail Apart from the example configuration file, I can't find any guides for optimal values to use for dovecot's many configuration options. A few that look like they might need changing are: login_process_size = 32 login_process_per_connection = yes login_processes_count = 3 mbox_dotlock_change_timeout = 30 auth_count = 1 client_workarounds = Does anyone have any pointers to reasonable values for those or other settings? It seems to be a bug in rc7, and probably an "always been there" bug. I sprinked a few "i_info(...)" diagnostics into "deliver.c" where it does 'getenv("MAIL")' and 'getenv("DEFAULT_MAIL_ENV")'. It shows that these are being successfully read from the 'dovecot.conf' file (good). But, crucially, it seems that the "%" variable substitution is incomplete: line 483: MAIL [null] line 486: MAIL mbox:%h:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%-2.02i/%u:INDEX=/var/spool/mail/indexes/%d/%n line 492: MAIL mbox:/home/fred:INBOX=/var/spool/mail//fred:INDEX=/var/spool/mail/indexes//fred (Aside: The act of inserting the 'i_info' will have knocked the line numbers adrift by a couple. But it shows what is (not) happening.) Note in the "INBOX=..." clause that while "%u" and "%h" have been successfully expanded (good), the "%i" variant (UNIX uid) has failed to get expanded (bad). I'm new to dovecot, so am on a steep learning curve and am unfamiliar with the source code and dovecot's principles. So it would probably take me ages to work out a suitable patch, and even then it might be inappropriate. But hopefully the above information is sufficient and suitable for someone (Timo?) to investigate more expertly and fully. Hello to All. I have a system with FreeBSD 6.1 Release, Dovecot 1.0 Release Candidate 7. I am a novice user in unix world and when my first deal with with Dovecot is Virtual users. User databes in master.passwd file (like a /etc/master.passwd) created by "pw". All works fine, BUT --- If user exclusivly virtual (there is no user with same name in system) IMAP folders are created normal with a right access rights(they described in dovecot.conf statically UID 555) - all cool - BUT when i trying to login with a Virtual user with the SAME LOGIN NAME as in SYSTEM (FreeBSD's /etc/master.passwd user) USER ---- going something strange: imap folders that creating for this user takig wrong ACCES RIGHTS (access rights for system user), not statically with UID 555! [Dovecot] Maildir messages owned by Root.

G'day I am having an interesting issue, that I can not find a fixe for. I am running dovecot 1.0 rc7, on a Freebsd 5.4 x86 box, with around 1500ish users, using Maildir storage format. I have a very small number of user, with the same problem, when messages are moved from ~username/Maildir/new to ~username/Maildir/cur a random number, of the files ownership, will change to root. And my users can then not download any mail until this has been fixed. I have an identical setup running on Solaris 10 x86, that does not have this problem. Has anybody come across this before on Freebsd or any other operating system. Or have any suggestions, on what I can try to fix the problem. I have not been able to emulate it in a lab environment, and the logs on the server do not produce an error.

[Dovecot] OT: NIS Authentication

Ran into a major issue with my setup overnight: We have a Win2K AD domain running SFU with a master and 1 slave NIS server. Our mail server is a FC1 box that runs dovecot and a MailScanner/sendmail config. The mail server is configured as a NIS client. The problem is that we lost power overnight and all of the boxes shutdown after the UPS's ran out of battery. After the power came back on, all of the boxes automatically rebooted. The problem is that our mail server is somewhat faster than the rest of the servers. It booted up before the master or slave NIS servers were up and running. Since the mail server uses a PAM NIS authentication scheme, it knows nothing about our users unless it connects to a NIS server. So, this morning users were getting "unknown username" type errors with outlook. Furthermore, the mail logs show that sendmail was rejecting mail with "unknown user" errors. It wasn't until we rebooted the mail server and it was able to reconnect to the NIS servers that mail resumed being received and users could access it. It seems like a fundamental problem with our setup. Since I'll eventually be updating the box to a newer OS and configuration, I need to plug this hole somehow without changing the authentication scheme. Furthermore, I'm concerned that if the master or slave went down while the mail server was still up, we'd see similar results. I'm thinking of one of two options to fix this but wanted to run it by everyone to see if there was a better way: 1) Configure the boot loader to wait 5 minutes before loading the OS (it uses GRUB so I'll set it display the OS menu screen for 5 minutes and then boot). Then if I'm doing maintenance to the box I can just hit enter to boot immediately and hopefully the 5 minute delay will allow the other boxes to boot after a power outage. This won't cover me if it's not a power outage (Eg. The master or slave dies). 2) Configure the mail server as an NIS slave. I'm thinking that this will basically "copy" the user info (username, password, homedir, etc.) on a schedule and store it locally on the mail server (is this how it works?). This covers both issues - power outage and a server dying. But I've read about problems getting password sync to happen quickly. I'd ideally like it to happen immediately (without any manual intervention) but I don't think this is possible. Thoughts? [Dovecot] Can't build with PAM support

I'm having trouble getting dovecot to compile with PAM support. Output from the configure command says its checking for pam_start in -lpam .... no. I've checked, there is a pam_start in there. So how can I force configure to see what its looking for? I've tried the --with-pam switch and that doesn't work. I'm trying to build the latest RC7 on a Debian Sarge box. Hi All, I have just setup a Dovecot Imap server on a Ubuntu 6.06 Lamp box. Basically I use fetchmail to retrieve emails from foregin pop accounts and then procmail transfers emails for /var/mail/username to ~/Maildir/new and other folders. Everything works fine *except* if my Thunderbird client is connected (I haven't tried any other client). If an email is received while TB is connected, then the file for the email is empty (eg size 0) leading to an empty email dated 1/jan/1970!. Hello I have just spent a happy day (!) configuring Exim4 to accept authenticated connections from full blown Outlook clients. That works. Unfortunately, by ticking the "Use SPA" box in Outlook it now demands SPA on the POP3 server as well. The existing POP3 server doesn't support this style of authentication. I believe Dovecot will. We're already using it as an IMAP server. What I'm worried about is diverting its current view from /etc/passwd. I have an /etc/exim4/passwd file which contains three fields for the users tested so far, their name, an encrypted password, and a clear text one. Timo has already told me that the system needs access to the cleartext password (or an NTLM style password) in order to work. It would be nice if I could have the system check the /etc/exim4/passwd file and if the user wasn't there then check the /etc/passwd file - and ignore NTLM as it would normally. Dovecot rc7 I have Dovecot working fine with using SSL on port 995. up until a week or so ago, I had no problem using IMAP logging into a server running Fedora Core (I think 4 or 5 ) with dovecot 1.0. Had used squirrelmail and other mail agents using IMAP with no problem. as of 2 days ago, I get a squirrelmail error "ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server. Hi, my dovecot installation works since months and clients authenticate using CRAM-MD5. But today I got the first chance to test an client that supports DIGEST-MD5 - and it doesn't work. Because of lack of other supporting clients and servers I'm now at the point I don't know which side is to blame. The error I get after the client answers the servers challenge is "-ERR Authentication failed: Missing nonce parameter". I read through the thread on Stale imap process and would like to chime in that I too am having the problem. The only imap user on the system is using Mail.app 2.1. The other users are using pop with thunderbird. After quiting mail.app and stopping dovecot I can still see many imap sessions opened. Over the course of the day a good number of imap process will be open and no one will be able to connect to the server via imap or pop. Typically I have to restart dovecot twice a day with the following: /etc/init.d/dovecot stop killall imap /etc/init.d/dovecot start I've narrowed it down to an imap issue. If i don't connect with imap the other users don't report any issues connecting with pop. I'm using mbox as my mail format on centos 4. I know that the default version on centos4 is .99, but it appears that people are still having issues into 1.0rc2. Could it have something to do with using mbox format? (OS: Fedora Core 5; dovecot: 1.0 rc7) On a typical UNIX-like OS, the INBOXes are in "/var/spool/mail/" using the user identifier: so user 'fred' has INBOX "/var/spool/mail/fred". We have a well-established different convention which subdivides this, based on the last two digits of the uid: "/var/spool/mail/12/fred" (for fred's uid as something ending "[...]12"). This is working nicely with dovecot, using the new rc7 functionality: default_mail_env = mbox:%h:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%-2.02i/%u:[...] I am now trying to get sendmail to use dovecot's "deliver" as the LDA, (following "http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA") as a simple drop-in replacement for the normal LDA. (Actually our migration starting point is a UW-IMAP background using its 'tmail' as LDA.) 1. It seems that using "auth default {...socket listen {...}...}" is mandatory. Can someone confirm? This feels like an extra complication: is it strictly necessary in a NIS/PAM set-up? (Fair enough if so.) 2. The main problem is that, according to the log file, the delivery attempt is being made to an INBOX "/var/spool/mail//fred". That is, it seems to be ignoring the "default_mail_env" setting. [Dovecot] No tcp wrappers, other ideas to help stop brute force attacks?

I'm looking for a way to deny access to dovecot from certain IP addresses, basically to help prevent brute force attacks on the server. Right now I'm using denyhosts which scans /var/log/secure for authentication failures which then can add an entry to /etc/hosts.deny, but since dovecot doesn't have tcp wrappers support, that doesn't do anything. It doesn't look like I can run dovecot run xinetd. Any other ideas to help protect dovecot from brute force attacks? I don't think pam can help, can it? Otherwise I need to figure out a way to have denyhosts trigger iptables rules or something, or maybe there's another application that will work? -Dave

Hello Timo, Dispite the heat out here, I managed to come up with a new version of the managesieve patch for dovecot-1.0rc2: - Fixed the bug (missing CRLF) in the authenticate command - Modified the sieve storage library making the interface much less crude. - The scripts put on the server using the putscript command are now checked before they are accepted. - The reported SIEVE capability is now directly read from the sieve implementation (in this case cmu), listing much more than "FILEINTO VACATION". - Fixed some minor bugs in the putscript command Considering the dovecot-sieve plugin, I noticed that you obviously do not want to include the cmu sieve code in the main dovecot source tree. Unfortunately I did not see any other way but to include this library in my patch to make it support checking the uploaded scripts (for now). There are a few alternatives to solve this issue. We could combine de dovecot-sieve plugin with the managesieve patch yielding a single large sieve plugin. However, this would require some means to let the master know about the new managesieve process type. This could be achieved with some more plugin magic. Another way to solve this problem is by truly only excluding the cmu source from the main dovecot tree. If the interface of the sieve implementation is abstracted somehow, one could build a plugin interface for sieve implementations. This sieve interface would be common to dovecot-deliver and the managesieve daemon. This way, it does not matter how the sieve language is implemented (dovecot could even implement its own and still support cmu and others). I saw a hint to this solution in your original dovecot-lda plugin (i.e. sieve-mailutils.c etc), so you must have been playing with this idea as well. I took the liberty to define an example interface for the sieve implementations in the src/lib-sieve directory. It was concieved very quickly and it is far from complete, but it should support the current features of the delivery process. It is only tested for the managesieve putscript verification (no script was ever run though this interface). I am also not quite happy with the error reporting scheme of this interface. This needs more work and if you don't like it you can of course discard it entirely and define your own. Currently, I am also testing other sieve implementations. I am experimenting with libsieve2 (libsieve.sourceforge.net) and with building a wrapper around 'exim -bf'. This last solution is of course not useful for dovecot-lda, but I think the managesieve daemon is not only useful for dovecot itself. Support for these implementations is not yet included in this patch. The only other implementation I got working is smartsieve. The others either crashed or produced protocol errors (i.e. sieveshell). I hope I can get more client implementations to work to ensure the incompatibilies are not my fault. Hello Timo, On FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE, rc7 doesn't build (rc6 didn't either) because of a broken "sed" in the genarated "libtool" script, at least with the "zsh" shell comming from the ports (zsh-4.3.2). This has occured starting from your move from Autoconf 2.59 to Autoconf 2.60 since for some reason, now "libtool" is run by zsh (instead of sh as in 2.59). I didn't investigate if it comes from : . "me/FreeBSD" : my particular version of zsh, or some patch that may be included in the port . "you" : changes in config.in, some problems in autotools you are using . "Debian" : the 1.5.22 Debian 1.5.22-4 patches of "ltmain.sh" used . "Libtool" : maybe some strange interaction with zsh . [Dovecot] RC7: its issues or mine?

Background: I'm new to dovecot (although with many years Washington IMAP behind me). We're considering migrating from Washington IMAP to dovecot on the main service here, and have just started trying dovecot, using RC7. Washington, IMAP has the usual(-ish) "/var/spool/mail" shared area for the INBOX (trad. UNIX "From " format); a user's folders default to being in their home directory (same format). We are looking towards a "minimal effort" migration to dovecot, so wish to keep this layout. (In an ideal world, we would re-think, including "maildir" etc. But that's not an option at the moment.) I have encountered three issues (so far); I'm not sure whether their mine or something in dovecot (if the latter, whether bugs or features; whether RC7-specific issues; etc.). 1. The overall description of "default_mail_env" seems inadequate (in the conf file, "doc/variables.txt" and "doc/mail-storages.txt"). I'm trying: default_mail_env = mbox:~:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%-2.02i/%u:INDEX=/tmp/indexes/%d/%n and that seems OK-ish. (The extra "%-2.02i" is because we subdivide the otherwise huge "/var/spool/mail/" directory using the user's uid-mod-100.) But the mere act of an IMAP "login" commands creates a directory (empty) with the liternal name of ~ (tilde). (An IMAP 'list "Mail" "*"' command successfully finds the usr folders in the 'Mail' subdirectory of the user's home directory.) It's almost as if the 'default_mail_env' is telling it to create (literal) '~' before realising that this is shorthand (as in C-shell) for home directory. 2. We have some Pine usage in our UNIX cluster. Historically this has taken advantage of the Pine "rsh mailmachine /etc/rimapd" ability to avoid the need for the password: pre-authentication etc. (Yes, we realise that 'rsh' has security issues.) But when I try making symlink "/etc/rimapd" point to "/usr/dovecot/sbin/dovecot" this fails: Error: Can't use SSL key file /etc/ssl/private/dovecot.pem: Permission denied We have: /etc/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem (mode 444) /etc/ssl/private/dovecot.pem (mode 400) for the sake of secure-IMAP (port 993). But why does this come into the equation at all for this (none-SSL) "rsh ... /etc/rimapd" usage? 3. I was developing and testing this here at work using an account that I mostly use from home using Outlook Express. I was very careful (I think!) only to use the read-only "examine INBOX" command (not "select INBOX"). When I went home and tried it as usual (connecting to our production Washington IMAP service reading that INBOX). But OE showed all the email (including previously read) as "unread" (closed envelope icon). It seems that dovecot has done something to the message headers (even under "examine") that has worried OE. Any thoughts? Finally any hints for NFS-based working? We have a farm of a few Fedora machines running the IMAP processes and the sendmail locally-delivery. Our current "/etc/fstab" NFS spec. for the INBOX area (on a NetApp) is: rw,noac,actimeo=0,vers=3,tcp,timeo=600,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,hard,intr,fg,nosuid Any changes? Issues? Thinks to consider? Hi, We have been using Dovecot 1.0 to serve Maildir format over IMAPs to a client with an office of around 30 people, and a remote office of 10, all using Outlook 2003. While users in the base office (location of server) are not having issues with the server users in the remote office are often having problems with Outlook freezing, or not being able to connect. The dovecot log shows them logging in, but users report not being able to open any mail. We are having similar problems with 2 users that are often on 3G cards, in that the headers download but when they try to open the file it gives the 'must be online to download the message' error, even though they are still connected to their 3G. The net connection for the server is 2mb sdsl, which I have tested myself (using thunderbird on linux!) and achieved good throughput and reliable mailbox navigation. Is there any Outlook work arounds we could be using? (currently using idle timeout work around) Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks, Mark

I have the SyncKolab plugin installed with Thunderbird. I can't get it to work properly. Maybe I have to have a Kolab Server? I can get my Address Book contacts to sync with an IMAP folder when I check Sync IMAP, but I can't get it to work the other way around. From their website, it seems possible: [begin paste] SyncKolab SyncKolab was written to add kolab functionality to thunderbird. It reads a selected Imap folder and synchronizes it with the local address book and calendar. It has been tested under Thunderbird 1 for Windows and Linux. What is Kolab? What it does is, that it loads all your contacts (from a selected address book) as well as events and todos (from the selected calendar), and synchronizes them with a selected imap folder. Where every contact is stored as an vcard and every event,todo as iCalendar. For more information http://kolab.org/ The idea behind this is, that you can now have your contacts+calendar entries stored on the imap server. so you can actually have the same addresses on more than one computer. The kolab project has a groupware server that uses imap to exchange calendar entries and vcards. I don't know. Is IMAP capable of serving "Special" folders? If so, then I would say yes. Are there plans for dovecot to support this feature? And if not, does anybody know of a way to sync up Contacts & Calendar information from one client to another (using the same id) with Thunderbird, Outlook, or another MTA? Curious to know. Thanks. Hi guys, this is my first message in list. i've installed dovecot 1 RC 7 from sources and set it up with postfix as a pop3 mail server: all worked perfectly. Now i would like to set up a local web mail interface; most web mails (eg horde,squirrelMail) use imap to get mail; so i've to set up dovecot imap server. For some reason, I cannot filter messages that have uppercase or possibly mixed casing in them. I have tried several tests by connecting to port 25 and sending messages. The ones that fail are from MAILER-DAEMON(a)mydomain.net. But I have some problem which I can't resolve with Google and Dovecot.Org. Now users can see and subscribe to test folder "share", but I can't block ability to delete messages via ACL. [Sending this again from the email account that I actually have subscribed to the list - hopefully won't be a dup...] We have been running dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.rpm on CentOS4 (since that's the latest that ships with RHEL/CentOS) for a while. Aalso in parallel, we have been running various 1.0 betas and RCs on a different port for a different set of more test-tolerant users. This weekend, I upgraded to 1.0.rc7, and made all users use this. I found a small issue. All our users have a large set of folders in their Maildir. For the users who got upgraded from 0.99.11 to 1.0.rc7 (well, the one user who accessed their mail so far since the upgrade...) their folders weren't showing up in Thunderbird any more. Deleting all the dovecot-* files in the Maildir didn't help. In the end, the user re-subscribed to all the folders and then they showed up. (FYI, this is a right-click operation on the account in the Thunderbird tree view, subscribe menu option, then re-check all the folder names). Is there anything that can be implemented in 1.0.rc7 so that users don't have to manually re-subscribe to everything, so the upgrade process in this situation is a little more transparent? Is this simply a matter of the different Dovecot versions naming the folders with different UUIDs (or whatever the IMAP protocol uses), or something else?

[Dovecot] Auto-blacklisting hosts after too many failed logins

Hi folks, first of all thanks for Dovecot, I appreciate it a lot. On one of our servers, we experience regular tries to brute force logins, probably based on harvested mail addresses. Now I wonder if dovecot has or could in future have some mechanism to blacklist remote IP addresses after a configurable number of failures to login to any account. Blacklisted IPs could simply be disconnected without giving them a chance to do anything. After e.g. one day or one hour of no further connection, the blacklist entry could be dropped. As a bonus, it would be great to have a way to close the POP3/IMAP firewall ports to these IPs to avoid dovecot seeing the connection at all. A kind of blacklist status file on disk would be enough, from which some cron job could fill a firewall chain. If necessary, I would try to add this functionality myself. I can consistently reproduce a crash in dovecot: Select 20 or more messages and copy them to a test folder. It seems related to when the system run out of file descriptors, to force the issue i forwarded 3k of messages trough the server(using thunderbird). I also tried with my usual mail application - mail.app, but no luck there. Well, I finally got around to fiddling with this, and I now have created a /etc/pam.d/system-auth that doesn't trigger the annoying authentication failure messages in syslog. The file is shown below. I've tested this by connecting in using SSH (setup for PAM) both as a user in the local /etc/passwd and as a user in LDAP. Also, I tested /etc/passwd users with the LDAP server stopped, and that worked too. Finally, I tested connecting to Dovecot as an LDAP user. Note: The only section that references LDAP is the auth section. That's because account and session rely on pam_unix to pick up the information using nss_ldap (i.e. /etc/nsswitch.conf says "files ldap" for passwd, group, etc.) This seems to work for me... Also, note that my LDAP server stores Samba passwords too, so that's why the password section uses pam_smbpass (which in turn is setup to access LDAP via /etc/samba/smb.conf) rather than pam_ldap. Hello, i saw you posted on dovecot.org and was hoping you could assist with a problem i have with dovecot. I installed the attached file to webmin and clicked it said it installed correctly: Dovecot IMAP/POP3 Server in /usr/libexec/webmin/dovecot (372 kB) under category Servers I clicked the link and then clicked "Start Dovecot Server" from the webmin panel and got this error: Failed to start Dovecot : I assume this means a file is missing. My config file looks like this: dovecot=/usr/sbin/dovecot dovecot_config=/etc/dovecot.conf init_script=dovecot pid_file=/var/run/dovecot/master.pid There doesn't appear to be a dovecot directory in: etc/rc.d/init.d/ Perhaps that's the issue? I'm running Redhat Linux 4. Can you assist in any way? Any help is most appreciated. Thanks, Don

I also found the MySQL Problems page on the wiki, but the issues are supposed to be resolved for my version of MySQL. The only way to get dovecot to authenticate again is to restart the daemon. Is there a solution to this problem? The cur/new/tmp folders gets created, but nothing more. The MTA on the server puts the messages inside the new/ folder, and I can get the mails with pop3 from the 'teszt' account. Only imap is acting funny. This "infinite loop" happens with Thunderbird, but I tried it with KMail too. The latter says right after the login procedure: "The connection to the server IMAP Account was unexpectedly closed or timed out. It will be re-established automatically if possible." Is there some script which makes the maildir folder "ready" for use (like the mkmaildir with courier imap), or is there some special file which I must put in it to make it work? Thanks for the help! Hi! Is this possible? I couldn't find any writings about the 'auth' (like 'auth default') keyword in the wiki. What does that mean? Can I setup seperate user and password dbs for sepearate circumstances? I've tried to experiment with it and added two auths: auth pop3 { mechanisms = plain digest-md5 passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot_pop3.passwd } userdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot_pop3.passwd } user = _dv_auth } auth imap { mechanisms = plain digest-md5 passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot_imap.passwd } userdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot_imap.passwd } user = _dv_auth } But how can I configure dovecot to use the 'auth imap' for imap authentications, and use 'auth pop3' for pop3 authentications. [Dovecot] Dovecot SSL issue on Solaris 10 x64 (64-bit)

I'm having an issue with Thunderbird (and Opera) and Dovecot SSL on a Solaris 10. My OS is Solaris 10 6/06 x86 (running in 64-bit mode) using ZFS (disk mirror) as the filesystem for my users. Dovecot version is 1.0rc7 (logs below are from 1.0rc6). First the connection asks if the SSL-certificate should be accepted, accepting it seems to work but then nothing happens. Thunderbird is quite silent, not always displays an error message, it just seems that there are no emails to download. It works fine in Mac OS X Mail.app with POP3s and IMAPs (both SSL). But not for Thunderbird (1.5.0.5) and Opera (latest). (at least from what I've read on the Internet) Strange that it works fine with Mail.app on Mac OS X. So, I installed the latest OpenSSL, compiled, tested and installed. Hello, I'm using dovecot-1.0.b9 on a FreeBSD 6.1 system. Usually we have 6 clients connected to dovecot through IMAPs. These clients are Thunderbird 1.5 programs. After some hours, one or two processed go up to 100% WCPU. As an example, this is what I see when I run 'top': last pid: 5111; load averages: 1.34, 1.82, 1.75 up 13+00:04:09 15:26:59 150 processes: 2 running, 147 sleeping, 1 zombie CPU states: 21.2% user, 0.0% nice, 47.7% system, 0.0% interrupt, 31.1% idle Mem: 149M Active, 368M Inact, 196M Wired, 29M Cache, 111M Buf, 255M Free Swap: 5120M Total, 548M Used, 4572M Free, 10% Inuse PID USERNAME THR PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE C TIME WCPU COMMAND 52627 thomas 1 109 0 2940K 1500K CPU1 0 21:49 99.02% imap When there are two rebellious clients, they occupy 50-50% CPU time. Hi, The documentation says to authenticate only from a specific IP or network… if you set this to 127.0.0.1 to indicate the local loop then this effectively blocks every IP address but this one. Since the extra field is in passdb then this would imply it can be done on a per user basis. Have you tried this? [Dovecot] multiple mailboxes in imap

Hi I try to setup a mail server which fetches mails from some pop accounts and presents them through imap (with dovecot) to my local network. I get the mails with getmail at this works as it should. To use dovecot as a pop3 and imap server works too. Now I am trying to setup multiple mailboxes which then should be presented to the user as different folders. I think I have to use namespaces for this (is this correct?) So I tried to configure two namespaces with the following statement. namespace private { separator = / inbox = yes prefix = } namespace private { separator = / prefix = ns location = maildir:/data/server/mail/in/%u/ns } when i try to access the imap server with thunderbird I can receive mails for Inbox but when I want to subscripe an additional folder ns can be seen but is grayed out in thunderbird. To summarize this can anybody give me a hint or example how to configure multiple mailboxes which are located in different directories on the server. thx

In testing the migration from courier-imap to dovecot I've discovered that the forward flag on messages isn't kept track of in a standard way. courier-imap seems to keep track of forwarded messages in courierimapkeywords/:list dovecot seems to add an 'a' flag to the filename. Unfortunately this 'a' flag information doesn't seem to be given out by dovecot. It's like it's write only. I'm having a problem with the dovecot server. I've upgraded to 1.0rc7 to no avail. My naive view is that a cache file is corrupt, or a lock file cannot be unset. Certain mailboxes cannot be accessed to read or write. Checking the process, the server looks stuck in an infinite poll/wait loop. telnetting directly to the server shows that things are definately amiss, though the original problem may have been caused by a faulty client (Apple Mail or Outlook). My question at this point is how to unwedge the server. Is there a cache repair utility, or a list of files which shouldn't exist? I don't see this info on the Wiki. After sortinig this out, I'm going to install mysql, since this seems to be the more-tested installation. Will dovecot automatically rebuild my current databases or do i need to prepare for sql by hand? -SM-

It looks like the v.0 RC7 is still not stable. It hangs almost every day. This morning I found that pop3 was not working but imap was working. I know other times when dovecot stop working, neither pop3 and imap worked. I just want to know if other users are getting the same problem.

Ok, I tried: sh -x /etc/rc.d/init.d/dovecot start and it started ok. Then I tried: sh /etc/rc.d/init.d/dovecot start and it started ok too. However, simply using: /etc/rc.d/init.d/dovecot start won't start. On a hunch, I disabled SELinux, and then: /etc/rc.d/init.d/dovecot start started ok. So I have an SELinux problem. Right now I'm doing a filesystem relabel. If that doesn't work, does anyone know where to go from here? Joseph D. Wagner

Hi all, I'm having an intermittent problem logging users in through a webmail client (RoundCube). My maillog reports this: auth(default): vmysql: sql error[3]: MySQL server has gone away imap-login: Disconnected: user=<sales(a)coppersinkdepot.com>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured The MySQL server hasn't gone anywhere, I can log into it fine and other apps report no problems with it. Restarting Dovecot fixes this issue, but it'll just happen again later. I'm on OpenBSD 3.9 using vpopmail. I've looked through the mailing list archives but can't find any info on this specific problem. Any ideas?

Dear All can someone confirm this bug please ? I am using Thunderbird 1.07, TB 1.5.0.4, Horde/IMP webmail as test clients, all running on FC4. Server is 1.0RC6 on CentOS 4 with maildir-sep set to ';' To reproduce: In your favourite mail client: 1. Create a top-level mail folder "atest" 2. Rename "atest" to "atest-extra" (basically hyphen<anything>) Result: Error about mailbox "atest-extra" does not exist If you refresh the folder list you see a new folder called "atest-extra-extra" (read all about it). Anyone else see this or is just me ? [Dovecot] virtual user directories?

I'm installing dovecot and hope to migrate my users from a POP3 system soon. I have the users in LDAP and LDAP is working, dovecot is using LDAP to authenticate my tests. What I'm trying to find is a setting when a user is authenticated by LDAP and dovecot, and that user directory does not exist in the location I have given for the private name space, I want dovecot to create the directory. Mentioning in a log that it created a directory is ok, but I want it to create the directory. I do not want to have to create the directories by hand (easy to do, I know, but that's not the point). Is there a way to tell dovecot to create any missing directories for authenticated users? Mike

[Dovecot] Problems with VersaMail on PalmOS

I'm at the early stages of debugging this problem, but in case I can save some time because somebody else has already come across these issues I thought I'd try a quick post. I have an installation of Dovecot 0.99.14-1sarge0 from the Debian stable tree (so nothing cutting edge, but it's proving stable and reliable) that I am connecting to from a Palm TX with VersaMail 3.1C over IMAP. Sadly it doesn't display all the mail folders I have available and I'm not entirely sure why. So far I've not found a common link between which are displayed, and if I try renaming them then the ones displayed change - so I suspect there is a certain randomness to this. I am aware that it doesn't cope with subfolders, and all these are root folders. Some of the root folders are empty because they are simply acting as a container for other folders in case that is relevant. As I say I'm at the early stages, and I'm also looking at other Palm mail apps (but this came with it so it seemed a good starting point). [Dovecot] Exempt mailboxes from indexing?

I looked through the wiki and the archives, but couldn't find an answer to this question. We use a webmail product that uses three dummy mbox dotfiles for storing configuration and temporary info. I'm trying to find a way to have dovecot's indexing ignore all dotfiles, and so far have had no luck (other than, of course, coding it in myself). Does anyone know if this is possible? Hi, I've set up a dovecot server under redhat enterprise 4.3 with the basic configuration(mbox). Everything runs fine under webmail(squirrelmail) and thunderbird. When I try it under outlook/outlook express tough, it takes a couple of minutes after the authentication to get all headers where it takes a couple of seconds under thunderbird(both windows and linux version). I tried with these two versions with same results: dovecot-1.0.beta9 and dovecot-1.0.rc7 Any idea? Thanks for help and regards --

According to RFC2104 an HMAC is calculated as follows: H(K XOR opad, H(K XOR ipad, text)) where H is the cryptographic hash function (MD5 in this case). Therefore the result has to be a 128 bit string, which is obviously not the case in the above shown example. In addition, the input value 'text' is missing if you only have a password K. Maybe it would be better to use {HMAC-MD5-CONTEXT} or {HMAC-MD5-CTX} ? Chris

This one has me stumped. After upgrading from dovecot-1.0-beta8 to dovecot-1.0-rc6, I can't start dovecot from /etc/rc.d/init.d/dovecot. I can start dovecot directly from the command line (/usr/sbin/dovecot). I can still use /etc/rc.d/init.d/dovecot to query the status of dovecot and shutdown dovecot, but I can't use it to start dovecot. It just says "FAILED". diff scan of the two different versions of the /etc/rc.d/init.d/dovecot file says they're identical. Ideas? Joseph D. Wagner

This box has 253 IP addresses bound to it and Dovecot is listening on everything. It looks like 213.13.124.18 was connecting to every IP, but I'm not sure why this would cause Dovecot to crash. I've been going round and round with this, and its driving me nuts. Previously, dovecot was erroring out during make due to some MySQL library issues. I thought I had that fixed, but now the compiled version I'm getting says it doesn't have MySQL support. I just started over, and noticed that ./configure is saying: Install prefix ...................... : /usr/local File offsets ........................ : 64bit I/O loop method ..................... : poll File change notification method ..... : dnotify Building with SSL support ........... : no Building with IPv6 support .......... : yes Building with pop3 server ........... : yes Building with mail delivery agent .. : yes Building with GSSAPI support ........ : no Building with user database modules . : static prefetch passwd passwd-file checkpassword sql (modules) Building with password lookup modules : passwd passwd-file shadow checkpassword sql (modules) Building with SQL drivers ............: I've tried running with: CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include/MySQL LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/lib ./configure --with-MySQL But same result. No MySQL support noted by ./configure. Any tips? Please help. Thanks.

[Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0rc7 quits without notice

Today I switched one of our servers from Courier (deployed 3-4y ago) to DCrc7. Everything seemed very nice (system load dropped significantly). Unfortunately after some time and ~8000 pop3-logins the main DC loop just quit without _any_ notice. Some pop3-login childs still showed up in the processlist, but the main listener on port 110 was gone. The above described scenario has been observed 2 times. Any suggestions are welcome. [Dovecot] Filesystem Quota Enhancement Patch

I have just updated my patch that provides enhanced support for filesystem-based quotas in Dovecot. I provides 2 main features: * Support for group quotas * Number of messages quota for users of maildir If both user and group quotas are enabled on the filesystem, the plugin will report the quota that is closer to the maximum independently for both storage space and message count. The message count quota comes from the filesystem inode quota. This patch has been tested on Fedora Core only, but it should work on all other OSes. The only exception is there is no group support on Solaris (I believe this is a limitation of Sun's implementation of filesystem-based quotas). I believe this patch make Dovecot's filesystem-based quota support complete. So, after a little bit of testing, it would be nice to have this merged with the main distribution. Scott Alter

Hi, Just today, Thunderbird started throwing errors when accessing a particular mail folder. Looking in the logs showed this: dovecot: Aug 09 15:36:31 Error: IMAP(nmenere): Corrupted index file /imap/mailboxes/nmenere/shared-settings/jira-support/index/.INBOX.Triaged/dovecot.index: messages_count too large (51 > 39) This is a new user's first attempt to access a shared jira-support/ folder, so there is no chance of their index files being corrupt. Deleting the dovecot* files didn't help. Neither did 'cp -rp .INBOX.Triaged .INBOX._Triaged' and then subscribing to the new folder. In fact, the problem seems to be with the files in cur/. There are 51 in total, and 39 of them have an 'i' flag: 1155084961.P27685Q5.redback.sydney.atlassian.com:2,Sbrk 1155084979.P27685Q6.redback.sydney.atlassian.com:2,Sbtk 1155085103.P27685Q10.redback.sydney.atlassian.com:2,Sbwk 1155085175.P28321Q1.redback.sydney.atlassian.com:2,Sbcki 1155085221.P27685Q12.redback.sydney.atlassian.com:2,Sbwk 1155085228.P28321Q4.redback.sydney.atlassian.com:2,Sbki 1155085231.P28321Q5.redback.sydney.atlassian.com:2,Sbki 1155085246.P28321Q6.redback.sydney.atlassian.com:2,Sbki Loading the maildir in mutt and re-saving them all to a clean maildir fixes the problem, by resetting the flags. I should mention that this happened a few months ago too, with 1.0b8 (I think). This is all running on a linux box, mail delivered with procmail, no special settings. Anyone seen this before? Hi List, I am trying to set up dovecot on my mail server and am having some difficulties… I want to use virtual mailboxes and so have set up a passwd-file for userdb and passdb and created entries for a user but they don’t seem to be working… I have included the relevant lines from all three files below… Dovecot.conf… auth_userdb = passwd-file /etc/dovecot/users auth_passdb = passwd-file /etc/dovecot/passwd users file… HYPERLINK "mailto:phil@topazaccommodation.co.uk::503:503::/var/mail/vhosts/topazaccomm odation.co.uk:/bin/false"phil@topazaccommodation.co.uk::503:503::/var/mail/v hosts/topazaccommodation.co.uk:/bin/false:: passwd file… phil@topazaccommocation.co.uk:$1$G/FqlOG5$Vj0xmc9fKY.UVr8OWr/7C1 As far as I know the password is the word ‘test’ encrypted with MD5 (is there anyway to have these as plain text?) [Dovecot] dovecot vs qpopper performance testing results

Hi, I did some performance testing with dovecot and qpopper, if anyone is interested.. Hardware: Dual Xeon 2.8 with HT enabled (dmesg sees 4 cpu-s), 1 GB RAM, SCSI RAID 1 with 2x Maxtor Atlas 10K V disks. Software: CentOS 4.3, Qpopper 4.08 in standalone mode vs Dovecot 1.0-0_19.rc6, ext3 filesystem Mailbox format Mbox, tested Pop3 with PAM authentication My setup had 15 test users with 15 identical 40 MB mbox files. Each mbox had 370 messages, 35 % of them had attachments. So average message size is about 110 KB, average attachment size 220 KB. "rabid" utility is part of postal package (http://www.coker.com.au/postal/) Command line, which fetches and deletes all the messages from users in the textfile: rabid -p 1 192.168.x.x ./users - Resulting fields are: time,messages,data(K),errors,connections,SSL connections,IMAP connections Results (only the best one shown): Qpopper: 1 parallel processes: 12:36,1020,111470,0,6,0,0 5 parallel clients: 12:44,3246,366207,0,13,0,0 15 parallel clients: 13:06,4099,481347,0,48,0,0 Dovecot: p1: 12:19,3316,367859,0,13,0,0 p5: 12:50,4653,524456,0,34,0,0 p15: 12:56,5063,578889,0,84,0,0 As you can see, Dovecot is faster.. With 15 parallel processes it seems to have saturated my 100Mbit/s LAN (578889 kB data in one minute). Dovecot had noticeably smaller disk IO and system load was smaller too, probably thanks to smaller IO. Qpopper performed better than I hoped.. It is probably due fast disks of the test system, I wouldn't expect such numbers using single IDE disk. Conclusion: The hardware was too fast for testing, LAN became a bottleneck atleast once. The results could be different with different mbox structure.. Anyway, I was convinced, Dovecot wins. -- asko
