In pop3-login/client-authenticate.c, when sasl_server_auth_begin() is called, it does so with the service name of "POP3". GSSAPI uses this service name when obtaining its service credentials. The problem is that according to http://www.iana.org/assignments/gssapi-service-names , the service name should instead be simply "pop". This causes GSSAPI authentication to fail when used with a POP3 account. I'm currently setting up a large mail system, with different services split out onto different machines. What I want is this: machine1: dovecot smtp auth, no pop/imap machine2: dovecot lda, no pop/imap machine3: pop/imap, nothing else machine3 is obviously not the issue. I'm trying to set up Johannes's DSpam plugin for dovecot. I've compiled rc2 and the plugin, and have things installed OK. I have a X-DSPAM-Signature in my message that is delivered to Inbox. Whenever I try to move this to my spam folder (I changed source to say 'Spam' instead of 'SPAM'), my client (Thunderbird) pops up 'The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: dspam failed.' I've set '#define DEBUG 1' in the plugin and see this in my 'messages' log. Sep 20 09:39:03 ltsp imap: /usr/local/bin/dspam --source=error --stdout --class=spam --signature=45113fe931161804284693 '/usr/local/bin/dspam' is the location of my dspam binary. Occasionally, though not every time I move a message, I see this in my 'messages' log. Hi, I installed a Emailserver based on Debian Sarge, exim (4.50-8sarge2) and dovecot (1.0.rc2-1bpo1). Delivering Mails with Exim to my Maildir works fine. hello, I have submitted a few weeks ago problem on sieve implementantion but there not useful solution for me at this time. I think that it depend on my mail architecture : _One NFS server _two dovecot POP/IMAP server (for pop and webmail access) : the POP/IMAP don't run dovecot LDA _two delivery serveur with exim and dovecot LDA : they communicate with external relay servers and deliver mail in box. The mailbox format is maildir and the dovecot version is 1.0 rc2 Question : On which server and how to implement sieve for dovecot. Regards Amadou TOURE

[Dovecot] Problems restoring from dump

Hello all, First, the vital stats: FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE, dovecot 1.0.rc7 from ports. I have run into a vexing little problem that has brought my deployment of a shiny new dovecot server to a screeching halt. Using 'periodic' I've configured regular backups to occur using 'dump'. I have a monthly level 0, a weekly level 4, and a daily level 8. These dumps take advantage of snapshots to ensure they are taking a backup of a consistent filesystem. As part of the beta testing, I decided to delete my maildir and attempt to recover from the dumps. Recovery went well, as dump/restore is a wonderful piece of software. I did a quick check at the file level to be sure my mailbox looked like it had when I took the last level 8 dump, and everything looked good. The problem came when I started up Thunderbird to take a look at my mail. When I selected a message, say one that said "knockout daily run output", I'd be reading a different message entirely, like a recent email from my boss! Most of the messages were like this - hopelessly scrambled! I tried just deleting the account in Thunderbird and connecting again, but that didn't change a thing. What happened!? Dump has faithfully restored the files, including the dovecot indexes... so why are my messages scrambled? Thanks for your help, Paul

After migrating our mail server from uw-imap to dovecot at the weekend we've had a few corrupted mbox folders. I assume this is due to messages with bad Content-length headers. Is there any way of checking the Content-length of messages in mbox folders? Thanks -- Ian

Hi All, I've just upgraded to Dovecot 1.0.rc7-1 with Postfix 2.3 on Debian Etch and it's trashing my email. I get lots of the errors below as well as other strange ones in my logs. I don't use NFS. Mail comes in via Postfix, gets passed through MailScanner, gets passed back to Postfix and then Postfix passes it to Dovecot's LDA via: mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver Deliver then chokes and get's a little upset. Is there anyway to wipe out all the indexes/uidlists etc and just have Dovecot regenerate them all with a clean slate? Has anybody seen this with dovecot LDA before? Any hints about troubleshooting it? Is the best plan just to copy my imap mail out, nuke the folders and then copy the mail back in again? I am trying to get Dovecot - Postfix - SASL to work. Hi, Im using dovecot version 0.99.11 and I'm facing a situation with one pop3 client. This is a fax application (faxmaker for windows) written by a third party that tries to login to the dovecot as USER username@domain. When the application tries to login that way, my dovecot rejects the auth. All the other pop3 clients (outlook, eudora,etc) in the system log in correctly because they do just USER username. The only failures related to the login (and I have debug enabled in dovecot) are: Sep 15 15:17:57 mail pop3-login: Aborted login [ipaddress] How ca I tell dovecot to ignore the domain part for that user? I am not using virtual support. Hello all, I am new to dovecot and have had a good experience so far. I'm using fetchmail - exim - dovecot - my email clients (mac os mail and thunderbird so far). I'm also using Ubuntu Server i.e. debian. I didn't like the inflexibility of mbox so I did a tweak to exim to deliver mail to a Maildir folder in my home directory on the server. I restarted Dovecot and it found it! Very nice but mysterious. I don't remember if I did anything to the dovecot.conf file. My clients balk at the ssl certificate that was created at install time. I see a little bit of documentation on SSL. I'll struggle with it. I'm going to look at more client setups like evolution and a webmail client. Can anyone recommend a good ajax-driven webmail client? Dovecot is good software. I'm happy I found it.

Hi, Trying to simplify the postfix/dovecot/saslauthd setup with less than 10 users, I was looking for some way to NOT duplicate the username/password setup. Currently I need to use a seperate file for dovecot as I do for saslauthd. (One is a simple shadow-alike file, the other the sasldb) I know that postfix 2.3 can use dovecot directly for sasl authentication, and that would be a neat solution, but we're stuck with postfix 2.2. I was wondering if anyone ever succeeded in making dovecot use saslauthd for authentication so that saslauthd becomes the authoritative source for password authentication for virtual users. (both for smtp auth as pop3/imap) My other idea to simplify was using something like pam_unix, but modified to use a seperate file (not /etc/shadow) and use pam in both dovecot and saslauthd. But I can't find something like that, pam_unix is fixed, and pam_userdb is something I'd like to avoid. Any ideas ? Hello, a couple of months ago, also thanks to help from this list, I set up postfix and dovecot for virtual domains on a Centos 4 remote server. I have postfix set up to deliver all email for marco(a)domain1.net to /var/mail/vhosts/marco_domain1.net/ Everything is fine, as far as postfix is concerned: all email to marco(a)domain1.net goes in that mailbox, dovecot sees it, etc... Now I need to add sorting all incoming email in subfolders: mail from SOME_LIST to marco_domain1.net/SOMELIST/ (lots of other rules for custom folders) all else to main inbox I have to do all this sorting with procmail for two reasons: - I want to have as little sw as possible on that server, and update it semi-automatically, if possible only from the official repositories: procmail has these characteristics - I want to reuse as is, with the smallest possible amount of translation, filtering, etc, the very long and complicated procmailrc files I have built over the years on several servers. My question is how do I have to modify (with a perl or similar script) the procmail rules so that they sort messages in maildir folders which: - are fully compatible with dovecot (and Squirrelmail) - (very useful, but not mandatory) can be viewed in categories and subcategories from Squirrelmail: personal/ friends/ family/ mailing_lists/ postfix/ dovecot/ .... work/ - *all* the messages, no matter how they were sorted on the server, can still be downloaded with fetchmail from home Note that I am not asking anybody to write the script for me (if you want to share a ready one, of course, I'll be glad). I just need to know what is the exact syntax/ folder naming conventions I have to follow to make all I wrote above happen. Hi all, I've just configured Dovecot as my IMAP server in my Ubuntu machine. Everything works fine: I can access my IMAP folders remotely, I have also installed Squirrel webmail to access it thru the web... Although I'm most of the time working with Ubuntu, sometimes I boot my machine with Windows XP. However, since the server is not running then (because I'm not running Ubuntu), the only thing I can do is read the files directly. Is there any client able to display the messages directly from the files and folders stored in Maildir? We recently switch from up-imapd to dovecot But many users are reporting that they cannot access certain mail folders. The log file has: imap(dws): Sep 14 00:06:19 Error: File isn't in mbox format: /home/research/dws/mail/TaskDL The files in the logs are "MBX mail folders", not "ASCII English text" as are the folders that can be read under Outlook. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? This is a serious problem in switching. I've read the FAQ and documentation but it doesn't speak to this specific problem. Hi, I'm just starting using dovecot, and find it powerfull and really fast, and have a so configuration, It's just making me happy :) (after tests, and test, and tests). So thanks you for the great job. I've got a question : POP get all my mail in all my maildir subfolder. I find it great and was searching for a pop daemon doing that (and discoved it accidentaly). Hi, I've been using Dovecot successfully for a while and I've recently encountered an issue : I got to work today and half the emails, were deleted... and after careful investigation : - On Monday it seems, the emails magically vanished .. (what I've been told) - My backup from Tuesday morning at 3am, indicates that all the files (mailbox) are intact but the subscription file is missing half the entries. - At noon, on Tuesday, half the subscriptions are still missing and half the files now also missing. Any ideas, known issues, suggestions? I have some code that can return the disk quota from AFS that I would like to add to the existing file system quota plugin (or perhaps create a new plugin) but I am having a hard time deciphering what each function should return and the data formats (e.g. kilobytes versus bytes). Hi all I have this interesting issue. I installed dovecot on FreeBSD 6.1. The install went well. I'm trying to get it to use a mysql database that postfix is already using to authenticate. When I use this in dovecot.conf userdb mysql { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot/dovecot-mysql.conf } passdb mysql { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot/dovecot-mysql.conf } I get this error. auth(default): Unknown passdb driver 'mysql' (typo, or Dovecot was built without support for it? Check with dovecot --build-options) This is strange because I did compile it with mysql support. Any ideas here?

I have some emails where the Subject line has been wrapped, and subsequent lines are indented with TAB characters. When I view this email using Thunderbird 1.5.0.5 on Windows XP, with Dovecot 1.0.rc7 running on CentOS 4.3, this TAB character shows up as a funny character in the subject line, as displayed by the Thunderbird. My question is: Should Dovecot be detecting mail header continuation lines that start with a TAB, and stripping the TAB (converting to a space)? I *think* that's what the RFCs implied when I read up on this a few months ago, but I may easily be mis-remembering. A second somewhat off-topic question: When the automated system that sends out these messages sends them to me directly, this problem does not occur, because the email titles are not wrapped. However, when I receive these emails via a mailman mailing list, mailman prepends the text "[Buildbot]" on the front of the title, thus making the title long enough to require wrapping. As such, I imagine that it's mailman that is indenting the Subject continuation line with the TAB character. Is there an issue in mailman - should mailman be indenting with e.g. a SPACE character, or is mailman's action perfectly legal? Thanks for any pointers.

Hello, I want to use PostgreSQL to store my Dovecot users. I setup a very basic configuration, following word for word this page http://wiki.dovecot.org/DovecotPostgresql and it works ... almost. In fact, it works if I use PLAIN password scheme in my database. However, I would like to store them encrypted. But, if I replace the password field for my user with {HMAC-MD5}-... (the password generated by dovecotpw), it doesn't work. I don't know if it's normal or not. So, I'm not sure what to do next :/ I use this kind of 'auth mechanism'/'password scheme' on another computer, with passwd-like files, and it works. [Dovecot] Mail does not arrive at my server.

I run under FC5. I want to setup a mail server with postfix (already runnung) and dovecot. Once this i working I add spamassassin and clamav. I setup postfix and can send emails. When replying to these emails they do not get to my server (I checked in the Maildir directory of the user, there is no file) The server has 2 NICs. there is a firewall where I opened the port 143 (that is for IMAP?) 0 0 ACCEPT tcp -- eth1 * 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 state NEW tcp dpt:143 flags:0x17/0x02 the only change I made to the dovecot.conf files is: protocols = imap I did not touch the rest as in the comments of the file it says # Default values are shown after each value, it's not required to uncomment # any of the lines. Any hint on what I am doing wrong is welcomed. Thanks in advance

Hello, I'm using a OpenLDAP server to store mail users infos like maildir location and password. This server is running on a separate machine and I'd like to protect the connection to it by using SSL/TLS. The server is configured so that it offers ldaps and it works with other clients. But I haven't found how to configure dovecot to use ldaps. Would someone please direct me to the right place or directly help how to? Greets, Jürgen

Hi I met problem developing plug-in under FreeBSD 6.1. First I tried to use internal plugins like quota and acl but I got: IMAP(xxx): module /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib01_acl_plugin.so: dlsym(acl_plugin_init) failed: Shared object "nss_dns.so.1" not found, required by "imap" This library doesn't exist on FreeBSD 6.1 Same story when u mention any plugin in dovecot.conf… Any ideas how to fix it? -- Yours Boris

[Dovecot] Namespace with a single mailbox (for spam)

Hi there. Perhaps this is answered somewhere, but a short search through the mailing list and Wiki yielded nothing. We have spam filtering set up for all users, with all messages over some spam threshold going to a separate mbox. There is one directory containing the spam mboxes of all users (call it "/var/spool/spam", right now), with the spam box of a user residing in /var/spool/spam/<user>. I am trying to achieve that, in IMAP, each user will see his spam mbox as a folder named "SPAM" or something like that (possibly under some new namespace), without creating a symbolic link for each user. Is there any facility for that? Specifically, I do not want to create a single namespace pointing to the directory, since that will cause each user to have to access his spam folder under a different name (e.g. #spam.<user>), and users will also see (although not be able to read) others' spam folders. Hi all, It looks like Dovecot 1.0rc7 reports the wrong content-type for messages with only a text/html body. An example of such a message is: --- From: mathijs(a)izecom.com Subject: test To: foobar(a)example.com Content-Type: text/html; test --- When I talk IMAP to Dovecot directly using telnet and fetch the bodystructure of this message, Dovecot replies: * 1 FETCH (BODYSTRUCTURE ("text" "plain" ("charset" "us-ascii") NIL NIL "7bit" 6 1 NIL NIL NIL)) I guess that should be 'text/html', not 'text/plain'. Hi, Folks, I recently migrated from courier-imapd to dovecot when I migrated a machine from rh9 to fc5. I managed to hit a snag with the 1.0b8 version of dovecot that's currently in fc5. With AppleMail 1.3 I was seeing most of my incoming mail go missing. To make a long story short, AppleMail was applying mail filters inappropriately (walking right past a 'stop processing' rule and moving my incoming mail into folders specified for Act-On actions). This made the AppleMail 1.3 client unusable with 1.0b8. Before complaining here I figured I ought to try the current version, and, sure enough, 1.0rc7 fails to cause AppleMail to go insane like 1.0b8 did. I'm not sure which change between b8 and rc7 is the important one, but rc7 seems to work well. I saw the pointer on the Wiki to the ATRPM's repository which had a current RPM, but looking at the included patches in their SRPM they seem to be doing things somewhat differently than the Fedora guys are (default settings, etc.), so, I figured for my machine I'd rather stay as close to the Fedora methodology to make future upgrades perhaps less painful. To that end I took the SRPM for b8 from fc5 and modified it as little as possible to make it work with 1.0rc7. One bugfix patch was left out as that seems to have been fixed in the Dovecot source during the interim period. I have dovecot on Fedora Core 5 and I want to create a subfolder. By default its impossible!!!! I setup dovecot for maildir and after I able to create a subfolder. But I cant receive my old and new email on this format. I read dovecot documentation at http://wiki.dovecot.org/QuestionsAndAnswers#head-35b621e067b7e72c1d1e47886f4 00a1a784bd95c and its write: For ordinary local Unix users, you may want to specify the mail environment as "maildir:%h/Maildir:INBOX=/var/mail/%n". There are two reasons. First, mail can be delivered there without consuming the user's disk quota on the home directory. Second, the user's home directory may prohibit access to any users other than the owner and the privileged user root. Having the INBOX outside the user's home directory permits mail delivery by programs running without root privileges, but belong to the group mail. I try it with maildir:%h/Maildir:INBOX=/var/mail/%n and dont work. I cant connect to my imap server. Help me please!!! Hugo

I can not understand, how at presence of system users (passdb shadow and userdb passwd) and virtual (for example, user(a)host.domain.com as system user and user(a)domain.com as virtual) to allow virtual users to not enter a domain part of username at a login, and to allow system users to use a full name (user(a)host.domain.com)? I have read the documentation and default config - I can not understand, how it can be made? If the parameter "auth_username_format = %n" worked inside of separate passdb{} and userdb{} sections, it can be realized, but it does not work inside of them :( . --- M. Alhimenko.

Hi am having an issue with the quota plugin To reproduce: - have a mailbox close to its quota limit (say 10 MB), and a large email in the inbox (say 6 MB) - use Squirrelmail or Thunderbird to delete the email The operation fails, as by default the email client seems to try and copy the message into the Trash before deleting it from the inbox, and dovecot will correctly deny the copy operation as the quota will be exceeded if the message is copied... Because of this, I am wondering if it is possible to have an option for the quota plugin to track, but not enforce the quota. This is because I don't require quota enforcement on IMAP operations, as Postfix will enforce quota on incoming mail anyway. Attached is a quick hack job I did on the plugin to strip out the enforcing functionality, but it would be great if this could be a configurable option.. when i browse imap with thunderbird, attachments are loadin/downloading really slow although they are size around 2Mb, it takes up to half minute to get it ..really annoying (server is in the same network as client) any idea why is so slow?

Hi all., I am uing dovecot rc7 and dovecot-sieve both compiled from source. If I test sieve with feature redirect require "redirect"; redirect "user@domain"; keep; log says "sieve parse error: line 1: Unsupported features in require line" Is this normal? Thanks !

[Dovecot] dovecot ignoring config file contents -- istream.c problem?

Hello! This is my first time trying to run dovecot so maybe I've overlooked something, but I'm having a hard time running dovecot. First of all, it's worth noting that I'm trying to run dovecot on an embedded platform: the target architecture is mipsel; I have patches for the 2.4.18 kernel with special support for the board so I'm still using the 2.4.18 kernel. My C library is uClibc (I forget which version; will look it up later). The compiler I'm using is GCC 2.96. Anyway, after some struggling, I got dovecot to compile. These are my configure options: ./configure --prefix=/home/marko/ovis/myfirm/tmp/ --build=i686-linux --host=mipsel-uclibc-linux --disable-static --disable-rpath --disable-ipv6 --with-pic --with-notify=none --without-shadow --without-pam --with-checkpassword --without-bsdauth --without-vpopmail --without-ssl --without-pop3d --without-docs dovecot compiles and runs, but no matter what I put in dovecot.conf, it says something like "SSL support not build in but ssl_disable=no". I've even tried putting garbage into the config file (like hello=test ; on my desktop dovecot complains on that line, it is completly ignored on my embedded device). But when I delete the config file, dovecot complains. So I've done some printf-debugging in lib-settings/settings.c, and fount out that: control flow reaches the line input = i_stream_create_file(fd, default_pool, 2048, TRUE); but then no single iteration of the while loop is executed. Do you have any idea what could be wrong here? Any help is greatly appreciated ! Thank you. Pavol Marko

Hello, I've had a look through past messages and I think this has been brought up but I'm not sure what the outcome of it was. I'm trying to use quotas with a MySQL dict backend. I am using Dovecot version 1.0.rc6-1 from the Debian Testing package on a x86 machine. My dovecot.conf file has the following entries which I took from the Wiki: dict { quotadict = mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-quota.conf } plugin { quota = dict:storage=10240 proxy::quotadict } and my dovecot-dict-quota.conf looks like the following, again from the Wiki: connect = host=127.0.0.1 dbname=mail user=<user> password=<passwd> table = quota select_field = current where_field = path username_field = username and my MySQL table is as follows: create table quota ( username varchar(255) not null, path varchar(255) not null, current integer, primary key (username, path) ); Now with this setup, the query for looking up the current quota appears in the MySQL logs as: SELECT current FROM quota WHERE path = 'quota/storage' AND username = 'neil(a)example.com' and the query for Inserting/Updating the quota is: BEGIN;INSERT INTO quota (current, path, username ) VALUES ('quota/storage', 0, 'neil(a)example.com') ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE current = current + 0;COMMIT With latter query, it appears to be trying to insert 'quota/storage' into `current` and 0 into `path`. This seems to be the wrong way around. Is that correct? If I change my dovecot-dict-quota.conf file to read: connect = host=127.0.0.1 dbname=mail user=<user> password=<passwd> table = quota select_field = path where_field = current username_field = username the two queries now look like: SELECT path FROM quota WHERE current = 'quota/storage' AND username = 'neil(a)example.com' and BEGIN;INSERT INTO quota (path, current, username ) VALUES ('quota/storage', 0, 'neil(a)example.com') ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE current = current + 0;COMMIT Although the latter query now works as expected and does update the quota in the database, the former query is now incorrect. I'm trying to use Dovecot SASL with postfix 2.3.3 and when trying to send mail I get the debug output below. I don't know enough about whats going on to know where the problem is but something clearly is not right. I would send the configurations for postfix and dovecot except they are clearly talking to each other so I kinda doubt its a configuration issue. The machine can afford to be down for an hour or two at a time for testing stuff if needed. Everything works fine but I wanted to create a way to accept mail to a few virual users and decied to use and example from http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualhostingWithExim auth = default auth_userdb = static uid=500 gid=500 home=/home/dovecot/users/%u auth_passdb = passwd-file /home/dovecot/passwd auth_user = dovecot I altered the uid and gid and made sure I have the directories ready and passwd file ok. Although everything appears to be working fine, I see the following entry in my log file each time someone logs on via the IMAPS service (all other services are disables: POP, IMAP, etc.): ========== Sep 6 02:57:00 mgw1 dovecot: Logins with login process UID xxxx (user someone(a)example.com) not permitted (see login_user in config file). ========== Any idea what this log entry means and is there a config setting I need to adjust to stop these log entries (Dovecot version 1.0.rc7)? Our imap/pop service is moving from UW imap to dovecot 0.99.11 on RHEL4. This is for around 200 users with lots of different email clients, e.g.: Windows: outlook, outlook Express, eudora, thunderbird, netscape OS X: mail, eudora, thunderbird Unix/Linux: evolution, thunderbird, pine, mutt Web: squirrelmail Apart from the example configuration file, I can't find any guides for optimal values to use for dovecot's many configuration options. A few that look like they might need changing are: login_process_size = 32 login_process_per_connection = yes login_processes_count = 3 mbox_dotlock_change_timeout = 30 auth_count = 1 client_workarounds = Does anyone have any pointers to reasonable values for those or other settings? It seems to be a bug in rc7, and probably an "always been there" bug. I sprinked a few "i_info(...)" diagnostics into "deliver.c" where it does 'getenv("MAIL")' and 'getenv("DEFAULT_MAIL_ENV")'. It shows that these are being successfully read from the 'dovecot.conf' file (good). But, crucially, it seems that the "%" variable substitution is incomplete: line 483: MAIL [null] line 486: MAIL mbox:%h:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%-2.02i/%u:INDEX=/var/spool/mail/indexes/%d/%n line 492: MAIL mbox:/home/fred:INBOX=/var/spool/mail//fred:INDEX=/var/spool/mail/indexes//fred (Aside: The act of inserting the 'i_info' will have knocked the line numbers adrift by a couple. But it shows what is (not) happening.) Note in the "INBOX=..." clause that while "%u" and "%h" have been successfully expanded (good), the "%i" variant (UNIX uid) has failed to get expanded (bad). I'm new to dovecot, so am on a steep learning curve and am unfamiliar with the source code and dovecot's principles. So it would probably take me ages to work out a suitable patch, and even then it might be inappropriate. But hopefully the above information is sufficient and suitable for someone (Timo?) to investigate more expertly and fully. Hello to All. I have a system with FreeBSD 6.1 Release, Dovecot 1.0 Release Candidate 7. I am a novice user in unix world and when my first deal with with Dovecot is Virtual users. User databes in master.passwd file (like a /etc/master.passwd) created by "pw". All works fine, BUT --- If user exclusivly virtual (there is no user with same name in system) IMAP folders are created normal with a right access rights(they described in dovecot.conf statically UID 555) - all cool - BUT when i trying to login with a Virtual user with the SAME LOGIN NAME as in SYSTEM (FreeBSD's /etc/master.passwd user) USER ---- going something strange: imap folders that creating for this user takig wrong ACCES RIGHTS (access rights for system user), not statically with UID 555! G'day I am having an interesting issue, that I can not find a fixe for. I am running dovecot 1.0 rc7, on a Freebsd 5.4 x86 box, with around 1500ish users, using Maildir storage format. I have a very small number of user, with the same problem, when messages are moved from ~username/Maildir/new to ~username/Maildir/cur a random number, of the files ownership, will change to root. And my users can then not download any mail until this has been fixed. I have an identical setup running on Solaris 10 x86, that does not have this problem. Has anybody come across this before on Freebsd or any other operating system. Or have any suggestions, on what I can try to fix the problem. I have not been able to emulate it in a lab environment, and the logs on the server do not produce an error.

[Dovecot] OT: NIS Authentication

Ran into a major issue with my setup overnight: We have a Win2K AD domain running SFU with a master and 1 slave NIS server. Our mail server is a FC1 box that runs dovecot and a MailScanner/sendmail config. The mail server is configured as a NIS client. The problem is that we lost power overnight and all of the boxes shutdown after the UPS's ran out of battery. After the power came back on, all of the boxes automatically rebooted. The problem is that our mail server is somewhat faster than the rest of the servers. It booted up before the master or slave NIS servers were up and running. Since the mail server uses a PAM NIS authentication scheme, it knows nothing about our users unless it connects to a NIS server. So, this morning users were getting "unknown username" type errors with outlook. Furthermore, the mail logs show that sendmail was rejecting mail with "unknown user" errors. It wasn't until we rebooted the mail server and it was able to reconnect to the NIS servers that mail resumed being received and users could access it. It seems like a fundamental problem with our setup. Since I'll eventually be updating the box to a newer OS and configuration, I need to plug this hole somehow without changing the authentication scheme. Furthermore, I'm concerned that if the master or slave went down while the mail server was still up, we'd see similar results. I'm thinking of one of two options to fix this but wanted to run it by everyone to see if there was a better way: 1) Configure the boot loader to wait 5 minutes before loading the OS (it uses GRUB so I'll set it display the OS menu screen for 5 minutes and then boot). Then if I'm doing maintenance to the box I can just hit enter to boot immediately and hopefully the 5 minute delay will allow the other boxes to boot after a power outage. This won't cover me if it's not a power outage (Eg. The master or slave dies). 2) Configure the mail server as an NIS slave. I'm thinking that this will basically "copy" the user info (username, password, homedir, etc.) on a schedule and store it locally on the mail server (is this how it works?). This covers both issues - power outage and a server dying. But I've read about problems getting password sync to happen quickly. I'd ideally like it to happen immediately (without any manual intervention) but I don't think this is possible. Thoughts? I'm having trouble getting dovecot to compile with PAM support. Output from the configure command says its checking for pam_start in -lpam .... no. I've checked, there is a pam_start in there. So how can I force configure to see what its looking for? I've tried the --with-pam switch and that doesn't work. I'm trying to build the latest RC7 on a Debian Sarge box. [Dovecot] Emails corrupted...

Hi All, I have just setup a Dovecot Imap server on a Ubuntu 6.06 Lamp box. Basically I use fetchmail to retrieve emails from foregin pop accounts and then procmail transfers emails for /var/mail/username to ~/Maildir/new and other folders. Everything works fine *except* if my Thunderbird client is connected (I haven't tried any other client). If an email is received while TB is connected, then the file for the email is empty (eg size 0) leading to an empty email dated 1/jan/1970!. [Dovecot] SPA (NTLM) Authentication

Hello I have just spent a happy day (!) configuring Exim4 to accept authenticated connections from full blown Outlook clients. That works. Unfortunately, by ticking the "Use SPA" box in Outlook it now demands SPA on the POP3 server as well. The existing POP3 server doesn't support this style of authentication. I believe Dovecot will. We're already using it as an IMAP server. What I'm worried about is diverting its current view from /etc/passwd. I have an /etc/exim4/passwd file which contains three fields for the users tested so far, their name, an encrypted password, and a clear text one. Timo has already told me that the system needs access to the cleartext password (or an NTLM style password) in order to work. It would be nice if I could have the system check the /etc/exim4/passwd file and if the user wasn't there then check the /etc/passwd file - and ignore NTLM as it would normally. Dovecot rc7 I have Dovecot working fine with using SSL on port 995. up until a week or so ago, I had no problem using IMAP logging into a server running Fedora Core (I think 4 or 5 ) with dovecot 1.0. Had used squirrelmail and other mail agents using IMAP with no problem. as of 2 days ago, I get a squirrelmail error "ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server. Hi, my dovecot installation works since months and clients authenticate using CRAM-MD5. But today I got the first chance to test an client that supports DIGEST-MD5 - and it doesn't work. Because of lack of other supporting clients and servers I'm now at the point I don't know which side is to blame. The error I get after the client answers the servers challenge is "-ERR Authentication failed: Missing nonce parameter". [Dovecot] Stale imap processes

I read through the thread on Stale imap process and would like to chime in that I too am having the problem. The only imap user on the system is using Mail.app 2.1. The other users are using pop with thunderbird. After quiting mail.app and stopping dovecot I can still see many imap sessions opened. Over the course of the day a good number of imap process will be open and no one will be able to connect to the server via imap or pop. Typically I have to restart dovecot twice a day with the following: /etc/init.d/dovecot stop killall imap /etc/init.d/dovecot start I've narrowed it down to an imap issue. If i don't connect with imap the other users don't report any issues connecting with pop. I'm using mbox as my mail format on centos 4. I know that the default version on centos4 is .99, but it appears that people are still having issues into 1.0rc2. Could it have something to do with using mbox format? (OS: Fedora Core 5; dovecot: 1.0 rc7) On a typical UNIX-like OS, the INBOXes are in "/var/spool/mail/" using the user identifier: so user 'fred' has INBOX "/var/spool/mail/fred". We have a well-established different convention which subdivides this, based on the last two digits of the uid: "/var/spool/mail/12/fred" (for fred's uid as something ending "[...]12"). This is working nicely with dovecot, using the new rc7 functionality: default_mail_env = mbox:%h:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%-2.02i/%u:[...] I am now trying to get sendmail to use dovecot's "deliver" as the LDA, (following "http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA") as a simple drop-in replacement for the normal LDA. (Actually our migration starting point is a UW-IMAP background using its 'tmail' as LDA.) 1. It seems that using "auth default {...socket listen {...}...}" is mandatory. Can someone confirm? This feels like an extra complication: is it strictly necessary in a NIS/PAM set-up? (Fair enough if so.) 2. The main problem is that, according to the log file, the delivery attempt is being made to an INBOX "/var/spool/mail//fred". That is, it seems to be ignoring the "default_mail_env" setting. [Dovecot] No tcp wrappers, other ideas to help stop brute force attacks?

I'm looking for a way to deny access to dovecot from certain IP addresses, basically to help prevent brute force attacks on the server. Right now I'm using denyhosts which scans /var/log/secure for authentication failures which then can add an entry to /etc/hosts.deny, but since dovecot doesn't have tcp wrappers support, that doesn't do anything. It doesn't look like I can run dovecot run xinetd. Any other ideas to help protect dovecot from brute force attacks? I don't think pam can help, can it? Otherwise I need to figure out a way to have denyhosts trigger iptables rules or something, or maybe there's another application that will work? -Dave

Hello Timo, Dispite the heat out here, I managed to come up with a new version of the managesieve patch for dovecot-1.0rc2: - Fixed the bug (missing CRLF) in the authenticate command - Modified the sieve storage library making the interface much less crude. - The scripts put on the server using the putscript command are now checked before they are accepted. - The reported SIEVE capability is now directly read from the sieve implementation (in this case cmu), listing much more than "FILEINTO VACATION". - Fixed some minor bugs in the putscript command Considering the dovecot-sieve plugin, I noticed that you obviously do not want to include the cmu sieve code in the main dovecot source tree. Unfortunately I did not see any other way but to include this library in my patch to make it support checking the uploaded scripts (for now). There are a few alternatives to solve this issue. We could combine de dovecot-sieve plugin with the managesieve patch yielding a single large sieve plugin. However, this would require some means to let the master know about the new managesieve process type. This could be achieved with some more plugin magic. Another way to solve this problem is by truly only excluding the cmu source from the main dovecot tree. If the interface of the sieve implementation is abstracted somehow, one could build a plugin interface for sieve implementations. This sieve interface would be common to dovecot-deliver and the managesieve daemon. This way, it does not matter how the sieve language is implemented (dovecot could even implement its own and still support cmu and others). I saw a hint to this solution in your original dovecot-lda plugin (i.e. sieve-mailutils.c etc), so you must have been playing with this idea as well. I took the liberty to define an example interface for the sieve implementations in the src/lib-sieve directory. It was concieved very quickly and it is far from complete, but it should support the current features of the delivery process. It is only tested for the managesieve putscript verification (no script was ever run though this interface). I am also not quite happy with the error reporting scheme of this interface. This needs more work and if you don't like it you can of course discard it entirely and define your own. Currently, I am also testing other sieve implementations. I am experimenting with libsieve2 (libsieve.sourceforge.net) and with building a wrapper around 'exim -bf'. This last solution is of course not useful for dovecot-lda, but I think the managesieve daemon is not only useful for dovecot itself. Support for these implementations is not yet included in this patch. The patch can be downloaded at: http://sinas.rename-it.nl/~sirius/dovecot-1.0.rc2-MANAGESIEVE-v2.diff.gz (Simply apply it (-p0) to a clean 1.0rc2 source tree and run autogen.sh etc.) For testing, I have tried other client implementations than horde-ingo, but somehow everyone is very focused on the timsieve daemon and they tend to require its protocol specifics. The only other implementation I got working is smartsieve. The others either crashed or produced protocol errors (i.e. sieveshell). I hope I can get more client implementations to work to ensure the incompatibilies are not my fault. Hello Timo, On FreeBSD 6.1-STABLE, rc7 doesn't build (rc6 didn't either) because of a broken "sed" in the genarated "libtool" script, at least with the "zsh" shell comming from the ports (zsh-4.3.2). This has occured starting from your move from Autoconf 2.59 to Autoconf 2.60 since for some reason, now "libtool" is run by zsh (instead of sh as in 2.59). I didn't investigate if it comes from : . "me/FreeBSD" : my particular version of zsh, or some patch that may be included in the port . "you" : changes in config.in, some problems in autotools you are using . "Debian" : the 1.5.22 Debian 1.5.22-4 patches of "ltmain.sh" used . "Libtool" : maybe some strange interaction with zsh . [Dovecot] RC7: its issues or mine?

Background: I'm new to dovecot (although with many years Washington IMAP behind me). We're considering migrating from Washington IMAP to dovecot on the main service here, and have just started trying dovecot, using RC7. Washington, IMAP has the usual(-ish) "/var/spool/mail" shared area for the INBOX (trad. UNIX "From " format); a user's folders default to being in their home directory (same format). We are looking towards a "minimal effort" migration to dovecot, so wish to keep this layout. (In an ideal world, we would re-think, including "maildir" etc. But that's not an option at the moment.) I have encountered three issues (so far); I'm not sure whether their mine or something in dovecot (if the latter, whether bugs or features; whether RC7-specific issues; etc.). 1. The overall description of "default_mail_env" seems inadequate (in the conf file, "doc/variables.txt" and "doc/mail-storages.txt"). I'm trying: default_mail_env = mbox:~:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%-2.02i/%u:INDEX=/tmp/indexes/%d/%n and that seems OK-ish. (The extra "%-2.02i" is because we subdivide the otherwise huge "/var/spool/mail/" directory using the user's uid-mod-100.) But the mere act of an IMAP "login" commands creates a directory (empty) with the liternal name of ~ (tilde). (An IMAP 'list "Mail" "*"' command successfully finds the usr folders in the 'Mail' subdirectory of the user's home directory.) It's almost as if the 'default_mail_env' is telling it to create (literal) '~' before realising that this is shorthand (as in C-shell) for home directory. 2. We have some Pine usage in our UNIX cluster. Historically this has taken advantage of the Pine "rsh mailmachine /etc/rimapd" ability to avoid the need for the password: pre-authentication etc. (Yes, we realise that 'rsh' has security issues.) But when I try making symlink "/etc/rimapd" point to "/usr/dovecot/sbin/dovecot" this fails: Error: Can't use SSL key file /etc/ssl/private/dovecot.pem: Permission denied We have: /etc/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem (mode 444) /etc/ssl/private/dovecot.pem (mode 400) for the sake of secure-IMAP (port 993). But why does this come into the equation at all for this (none-SSL) "rsh ... /etc/rimapd" usage? 3. I was developing and testing this here at work using an account that I mostly use from home using Outlook Express. I was very careful (I think!) only to use the read-only "examine INBOX" command (not "select INBOX"). When I went home and tried it as usual (connecting to our production Washington IMAP service reading that INBOX). But OE showed all the email (including previously read) as "unread" (closed envelope icon). It seems that dovecot has done something to the message headers (even under "examine") that has worried OE. Any thoughts? Finally any hints for NFS-based working? We have a farm of a few Fedora machines running the IMAP processes and the sendmail locally-delivery. Our current "/etc/fstab" NFS spec. for the INBOX area (on a NetApp) is: rw,noac,actimeo=0,vers=3,tcp,timeo=600,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,hard,intr,fg,nosuid Any changes? Issues? Thinks to consider? [Dovecot] IMAPS + Outlook

Hi, We have been using Dovecot 1.0 to serve Maildir format over IMAPs to a client with an office of around 30 people, and a remote office of 10, all using Outlook 2003. While users in the base office (location of server) are not having issues with the server users in the remote office are often having problems with Outlook freezing, or not being able to connect. The dovecot log shows them logging in, but users report not being able to open any mail. We are having similar problems with 2 users that are often on 3G cards, in that the headers download but when they try to open the file it gives the 'must be online to download the message' error, even though they are still connected to their 3G. The net connection for the server is 2mb sdsl, which I have tested myself (using thunderbird on linux!) and achieved good throughput and reliable mailbox navigation. Is there any Outlook work arounds we could be using? (currently using idle timeout work around) Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks, Mark

I have the SyncKolab plugin installed with Thunderbird. I can't get it to work properly. Maybe I have to have a Kolab Server? I can get my Address Book contacts to sync with an IMAP folder when I check Sync IMAP, but I can't get it to work the other way around. From their website, it seems possible: [begin paste] SyncKolab SyncKolab was written to add kolab functionality to thunderbird. It reads a selected Imap folder and synchronizes it with the local address book and calendar. It has been tested under Thunderbird 1 for Windows and Linux. What is Kolab? What it does is, that it loads all your contacts (from a selected address book) as well as events and todos (from the selected calendar), and synchronizes them with a selected imap folder. Where every contact is stored as an vcard and every event,todo as iCalendar. For more information http://kolab.org/ The idea behind this is, that you can now have your contacts+calendar entries stored on the imap server. so you can actually have the same addresses on more than one computer. The kolab project has a groupware server that uses imap to exchange calendar entries and vcards. But you can also setup simple sharing in your office if you have f.e. cyrus by symlinking shared folders. [end paste] Yeah, I've explored the Outlook connectors some. I don't know. Is IMAP capable of serving "Special" folders? If so, then I would say yes. Are there plans for dovecot to support this feature? And if not, does anybody know of a way to sync up Contacts & Calendar information from one client to another (using the same id) with Thunderbird, Outlook, or another MTA? Curious to know. Thanks. When I attempted to import my Contacts list into dovecot, my mail client told me that the IMAP server did not support "Special" folders. Is there a way to to do the contacts, or sync up Contacts & Calendar from a database or something else? I'm using both Thunderbird and Outlook. Thanks.

Hi guys, this is my first message in list. i've installed dovecot 1 RC 7 from sources and set it up with postfix as a pop3 mail server: all worked perfectly. Now i would like to set up a local web mail interface; most web mails (eg horde,squirrelMail) use imap to get mail; so i've to set up dovecot imap server. For some reason, I cannot filter messages that have uppercase or possibly mixed casing in them. I have tried several tests by connecting to port 25 and sending messages. The ones that fail are from MAILER-DAEMON(a)mydomain.net. Hi, all! I'm new to dovecot but trying to setup read-only public folders for different user groups. My goal is to create several public folder such as sales, operation etc with per user index. But I have some problem which I can't resolve with Google and Dovecot.Org. Now users can see and subscribe to test folder "share", but I can't block ability to delete messages via ACL.
