I'm seeing all kinds of problems with namespace prefixes and LIST code. I guess it would be important to fix it before v1.0 since it makes upgrades from other servers easier.. I also tried looking into the "Unknown namespace" problems that happens if you try to create only one namespace with "INBOX." prefix. I couldn't really figure out what causes those errors. Could someone show me what commands the client tries to use which causes it? * Removed login_max_logging_users setting since it was somewhat weird in how it worked. Added login_max_connections to replace it with login_process_per_connection=no, and with =yes its functionality is now within login_max_processes_count. + Added --with-linux-quota configure option to specify which Linux quota version to use, in case it's not correct in sys/quota.h. Usually used as --with-linux-quota=2 + acl plugins: If .DEFAULT file exists in global ACL root directory, use it as the default ACLs for all mailboxes. - Fixes to login process handling, especially with login_process_per_connection=no. - Back to the original SSL proxy code but with one small fix, which hopefully fixes the occational hangs with it - Several fixes to handling LIST command more correctly.

[Dovecot] Dovecot proxy: Too many open files

It appears that when running Dovecot as a proxy-only box with "login_process_per_connection = no", it ignores the value of login_max_logging_users. And in Linux, since each socket requires a file descriptor, if you don't increase the maximum number of open files that each process is allowed to have open, imap-login will reach the 1024 open file limit and start logging the following errors: imap-login: socket() failed: Too many open files imap-login: Internal login failure: user=... imap-login: socketpair() failed: Too many open files Here are the settings I am testing with: login_process_per_connection = no login_max_logging_users = 225 login_processes_count = 20 login_max_processes_count = 30 And here the output of "lsof -nu dovecot" when one of the imap-login processes reaches its open file limit. In this case PID 20087 had 362 users connected, but it should have allowed no more than 225 users, which would have kept it from reaching the open file limit: (sent directly to Timo since it was too big to post to the list) Also, I am running CVS dovecot-20060725. [Dovecot] Using mail_chroot and default_mail_env

Settings for mail_chroot and default_mail_env are not playing well together. It seems that default_mail_env is verified to exist *before* the chroot but is later used *after* the chroot. A configuration like this: * mail_chroot = /var/mail/example.com/username * default_mail_env = maildir:/Maildir Fails with the message: * stat(/Maildir) failed: No such file or directory As a work-around, I created an empty directory named Maildir *outside* of the chroot. The relevant portions of the filesystem now look something like this: * /Maildir * /var/mail/example.com/username/Maildir/... NOTE: The empty /Maildir directory is owned by root. NOTE: Each /var/mail/example.com/username directory and up is owned by root. NOTE: Each /var/mail/example.com/username/Maildir directory and below is owned by the email user. After successful testing with the "static" settings above, I was able to pull the per-user settings for mail_chroot in from PostgreSQL using home to over-ride mail_chroot. If anyone else has been having trouble with mail_chroot + default_mail_env, hopefully this work-around will help. Finally, I should mention my system, just in case I am the only one affected... * Xen + Linux 2.6.16.13 + Debian 3.1 + ( Dovecot 1.0rc2 in chroot ) Regards, Daniel Kauffman

Hi again, I am still struggling with ldap and dovecot. I have my dovecot authenticating against ldap. The problem now seems to be of a permission type. I am also trying to figure out the default_mail_env and valid_chroot_dirs settings. may maillog gives me: IMAP(user): Ambiguous mail location setting, don't know what to do with it: /var/spool/mail/ (try prefixing it with mbox: or maildir:) server dovecot: IMAP(user): Failed to create storage with data: /var/spool/mail/ Can anyone help me please.

Hi, I just started running RC2 on Thursday. I migrated an old Courier IMAP server, and the only issue I had was that I didn't understand how to enable quotas :) It's impressively fast, and I'm quite happy with it so far. This morning I found that dovecot had crashed, I had exceeded FreeBSD's kern.maxpipekva Has anyone successfully run dovecot under daemontools? I got it to fire up, but it didn't seem to work right.. I'm guessing it's a rights issue, but I haven't delved into it at all. Thanks! Rick

[Dovecot] Dovecot proxy in front of UWash?

Is it possible to use Dovecot frontends in front of UWash backends? I need a proxy pool ASAP. There is not sufficient time to migrate the backends for 40,000+ users so they have to stay UW for now. I have been looking at Perdition but concerned about performance under load. Dovecot looks really promising with it's non-forking mode. I need simple dumb frontends no local mail. Other questions: 1) Database? Wiki only talks about SQL, can I have it map username to hostname using LDAP or some other mechanism? 2) Kerberos? I am hazy here, but can I have the frontends auth the user via Kerberbos and things "just work"? Or do I need to stick with PLAIN authentication? 3) Port mappings? Can I have the requests coming in on SSL ports remapped to non-SSL ports on the backends? Thus the backends could have their load reduced somewhat. e.g. client->proxy:993->backend:143

In postgresql you can do something like select 'maildir:' || maildir as mail, uid, ... through dovecot-sql.conf Is there a mysql equivalent for adding 'maildir:' as a prefix to the 'mail' location ?

[Dovecot] Thunderbird and hanging "Copying message to Sent folder..."

Here's a work-around for the problem that appears to work and maybe also hints at the root of the problem: If you setup the Thunderbird account to "Place a copy in:..." "Other" and then select the Sent folder of the account (rather than just selecting "Sent Folder on: ..."), the problem appears to go away. I can't tell for sure, but Thunderbird seems to send the copy using a different connection than the one used for sending the message itself if you set things up in this way. [Dovecot] Stale imap processes

Anyone have any theories or experiences as to why for a certain user, some of his imap processes hang, and stay around for days and days? He just reported that his Thunderbird was timing out when trying to open folders, I looked on the server, and he had 3 old imap processes from 1 week+ ago. I killed those and his performance immediately improved. He checks mail with Thunderbird > 1.5 from both Win and Linux, Squirrelmail webmail, and pine. Of those, pine is the only one that is somewhat rare around here - any specific problems with pine's imap client code that anyone knows about? We have been using the dovecot-1.0-0.beta2.7 rpm for Fedora Core 5, I'm updating to 1.0-0.beta8.2.fc5 to see if that helps, as well. Just curious if anyone else has seen this lately. We have been using dovecot v1.0 alpha3 for almost 1 year for our mail hosting. It was running great until more accounts added to the hosting. I have been trying to upgrade it to v1.0 rc5 and we have found that the RC5 has problem with Outlook (Express) with POP accounts. We are getting error with POP3 on Outlook Express: Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'box5.dnsexit.com', Server: 'box5.dnsexit.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F Do you know if this is a bug or it is our configuration problem? I tried it on Thunderbird and it works great. Both Outlook and Outlook express fail. Are there anyone getting the same problem?

i'm running postfix+dovecot+mysql on FreeBSD 6.1, which has dovecot-1.0.b7_1 i'd like to be able for each user to deliver all spam-tagged email (by spamassassin) in a separate mailfolder i've done some "googling" but find it hard to find a solution for this has anyone a working setup with the above ? can dovecot do this or should i find a solution via postfix ? in the past i've used procmail (in a setup without mysql), but i've just read that procmail is not meant to be used with virtual users any hints ? thanks in advance! -- grtjs, albi

[Dovecot] Dovecot IMAP and Mac OS X Mail.app

Hi All, I recently switched our Courier IMAP server over to Dovecot primarily for performance reasons. Server OS is Debian Sarge with Dovecot packages from backports.org (v 1.0.rc2-1bpo1). Access from Thunderbird and Horde worked fine with some shared folders defined and the Courier compatibility private folder stanza. Initial testing with Mail.app showed that, although the folder listing was fetched correctly including all shared folders, no mail could be viewed with Mail.app timing out with an error about invalid namespace. (I'll post the exact error message as a follow up when I can test again later). After searching the mailing list for a while, I came upon a message suggesting adding a second private namespace like so: namespace private { separator = . prefix = "INBOX." inbox = yes hidden = no } namespace private { separator = . prefix = inbox = yes hidden = yes } Now, this does work in a fashion and allows Mail.app to access the folders and mail. Problem with this config: * Mail.app displays all INBOX. folders at the top level *and* below Inbox * Thunderbird displays a spurious INBOX folder in the folder listing under Inbox. * Horde displays folders at the top level and below Inbox. Whilst not being a huge problem for our internal mail server, this is not optimal. Has anyone else had these or similar problems and managed to work them out? If so, how did you configure Dovecot or the clients to all play nicely together? I'd quite like to roll Dovecot out on our client mail server but I need to work this out first so any help is appreciated. Thanks. Anyone have a solution for this, it appears in the log every time a user accesses their E-Mail via IMAP it obviously relates to filesystem quotas. I'm running: Linux version 2.6.9-34.ELsmp dovecot-1.0.rc2 Disk quotas for user aweaver (uid 1880): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace /dev/sda1 72172 512000 640000 7167 0 0 Relevant config(/usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf): mail_plugins = quota imap_quota quota = fs any advice would be lovely. [Dovecot] Deleted email does not appear in the Trash folder

Hi all I seem to have this problem whereby if I delete an email, then the deleted email does not appear in the Trash folder. I tried setting dovecot mail_debug = yes, but I find in syslog, mail.log etc that there is very limited information. If anyone could assit, I would be most greatful. Kind Regards Brent Clark P.s. [Dovecot] Can't change permissions for /var/spool/postfix/dovecot.index.log

For some reason i can't change the permissions on /var/spool/postfix/ dovecot.index.log from postfix to dovecot, or anything else. I changed all the files in /var/spool/postfix to be owner postfix so that postfix wouldn't complain about insufficient priviledges. I'm running MacOS X 10.4.7. I can change it all I want, but the owner and group changes do not 'stick' - they simply stay at postfix. Does anyone have any ideas? Can I have the index and index.log files elsewhere? Hello, In rc2 sources, the rawlog directory seem to be hard-coded to be looked for in $HOME. I'd like to have a way to centralized the place where rawlog files are, in order to be able : . to rotate them more easily . not to leave them at the user's reach . not to have to enter the user's directory to read them I'd like to have a layout similar to this : /var/log/dovecot.rawlog/ /user1/20060708-093811-45581.in /user1/20060708-093811-45581.ou /user1/... /user2/20060708-093811-45590.in /user2/20060708-093811-45590.out What do you think about that idea ? Is there already a patch to do that, should I change rawlog.c or is ther already a regular way do do that ? I should have looked closer at the log entries. I went to my maildir and ran a find . -name "dovecot.index*" -print0 | xargs -0 rm -f, which got rid of all the index files, but left the uidlists alone. That worked. The 64 bit dovecot is now running fine. So I guess we know that a 32 bit and a 64 bit dovecot can't both use the same mail store. Doesn't the dovecot front page talk about sanity checks being done to prevent this kind of stuff? This makes dovecot seem brittle. Anyway, thanks for the help. cheers, Scott

Personally I use maildirs and have the format be the filenames so I can continue to use qmail-pop3d (for now). If you're using the default, yeah, I think that's a generated id. Another option would be to recompile dovecot on the 64bit system with the --with-file-offset-size=32 instead of the RPMs. It is really an easy build. Personally, first I'd try removing the index files for my own account and see if my mail gets re-downloaded. Please note that I've done very little on 64bit systems, so these are mostly guesses. But I have compiled with --with-file-offset-size=64 and had to remove my index files to avoid that crash. > -Scott >

Howdy, I'm very excited about the new dovecot release because I've been having problems with a hang on saving messages to my sent-mail box over imap+ssl. I installed 1.0rc3 over my 1.0rc2 install on FreeBSD 5.3 in the same manner as all the other upgrades I've done. Hello. I'm in the final stages of installing Dovecot on a new server, and then will be migrating user mailboxes from an older server that was using UW-IMAP. I realize that I will have to rename the ".mailboxlist" file to ".subscriptions". But, I have a question about the "mail/" directory part that appears for most mailboxes in each users .mailboxlist file: since I'm configuring my Dovecot to use multiple hidden namespaces (one of which will include "mail/"), do I still have to remove the "mail/" directory portion of each entry in the subscription file by hand, or will the namespace settings take care of "ignoring" that part of each listed mailbox? Hi Just been reading a few threads on the sent-mail hang problem on Thunderbird (TB) and dovecot 1.0RC2 I'm getting reports from WinXP SP2 users running TB 1.0.7, server CentOS 4.2 and dovecot 1.0RC2 There were some suggestions: * Set max cached connections to 1 in TB - but this can result in access problems with blocking processes * Upgrading to TB 1.5.0.5 - not guaranteed to work * Downgrading to 1.0beta8 - works? Does anyone have a definitive answer to this problem ? [Dovecot] Inconsistent handling of CRLF in APPEND

One of the recent 1.0 commits relating to CRLF handling (maybe 2006-06-24) has changed the behaviour of APPEND when using mbox files with ordinary plain text emails. When a client stores a new message using an APPEND command (eg. saving a draft or copy of a sent message), it uses CRLF consistently as a line-ending throughout the literal data block over the wire - both for the header and the body. At least, this is what both Pine and Thunderbird do, so I suspect it's correct according to the IMAP specs, though perhaps there are grey areas around 8bit messages with no transfer-encoding. When Dovecot stores the message in the mbox file, it *used* to convert all the CRLFs to LF. Since the change, it is still converting the CRLFs in the header, but is leaving them intact in the body. The result is a weird hybrid format within the file. FETCH seems to undo the damage - at least, it sends back data with CRLF in both the header and the body - so provided the only access to the mail-store is through Dovecot, the clients are none the wiser. Dovecot also seems to handle existing messages (stored with LF only) OK too, and doesn't seem to be re-encoding them on update (eg. status changes). However, direct local access to the hybrid new messages will only work if the client is lenient about line endings: Pine seems OK, but others might not be, expecting an mbox file to be consistently "Unix" format. Is this a regression introduced while trying to fix the attachment corruption problem, or just a brand new bug?! Hopefully there is a way of reverting this change without reintroducing the attachment problem. Richard

[Dovecot] Quota with dict backend - sql does not get registered

Hello everyone, I've been working with the quota plugin, attempting to use the dict backend. It seems the sql dict class is not getting loaded. I dropped a couple lines in dict_class_lookup(dict.c) and it seems the only class that gets loaded is "proxy". Any idea how to get the sql driver to load in the quota/dict module? My authentication goes through the sql module and is working perfectly, so I know that the module and db are talking in general. I've scoured the documentation and dug through the code but I can't seem to discover the solution. There is "Dynamic SQL drivers" in the compiling from source section: http://wiki.dovecot.org/CompilingSource#line-158 I compiled the driver_mysql.so, copied it to lib/dovecot/, symlinked it into auth/, imap/, pop3/ and lda/, then tried-- but it still only showed "proxy" as being loaded. After that I added it to the mail_plugins list, mail_plugins = driver_mysql quota but it didn't like that and spat out some linking errors: Edlopen(/usr/local/dovecot-1.0.rc2/lib/dovecot/imap/driver_mysql.so) failed: /usr/local/dovecot-1.0.rc2/lib/dovecot/imap/driver_mysql.so: undefined symbol: sql_not_connected_result So, where do I go from here? When we switched, no one complained of performance issues -- except myself. mail.app would seem to stall on caching a message, then report that it was reconnecting, and move a bit further, then stall. . . What apparently was happening was the dovecot was polling for /dev/urandom, over and over again, waiting for some random bits, and Mail.app would timeout and reconnect. Turning off SSL made it MUCH faster. Of course, that's not a solution. So, I hunted the mailing lists, and ran across some notes about dovecot using /dev/urandom a little too enthusiastically. I haven't had a chance to grub through the code (hard to do with a 2-year old that won't sleep until midnight on many a nights!), and this post is somewhat premature, but I'm curious if turning off SSL removes the problem. Of course, switching to a Linux server will (sort of) negate the problem, in that apparently Linux is a little faster at finding random bits (I guess, I've never looked into it). My server is Solaris 9. My client is Mail.app from 10.3.9. As I grub through the code, I'll try and identify cryptographically significant randomness from non-cryptographically significant randomness. Sean

Background: I am wanting to create shared folders (public namespace) with access control lists on the sub directories. Our implementation of dovecot (v1.0b7) uses many virtual users and domains and 1 actual user (vmail), all using maildir. So far I have successfully created the public namespace (Public_Folders) which every user can access but I'm having difficulty restricting access using ACls. When trying to implement the dovecot ACL plug-in I followed the wiki instructions and created a "dovecot-acl" file within Public_Folders containing: owner lrwstiekxa user=user1(a)domain.com lrwstiek However this doesn't appear to do anything. All users can still access Public_Folders so I have a couple of questions that hopefully someone can help me with... 1) Is it possible to use the dovecot's ACL plug-in on a Public name space? 2) Is it possible to create dovecot-acl files with virtual usernames, i.e. user1(a)domain.com or does it have to be actual users, i.e. vmail? 3) Is it possible to restrict access within the namespace definition, i.e. set up another public namespace restricted to manager(a)domain.com? 4) Is ACL accepts & denies logged somewhere other than /var/log/maillog (my default)? 4) Is anyone successfully set-up an environment with a public namespace and ACLs? I've got Sun's Directory Server 5.2 installed here, and I would like to have dovecot use it for virtual users. I have the following questions: a) How do I get dovecot to link to DS's libraries? Am I better off just building OpenLDAP client libraries and linking dovecot with them instead? b) how about password-hash {CRYPT} in the OpenLDAP config file? Do I need to do anything to make DS5.2 do that for me the right way? c) Schema. Can I use the OpenLDAP schema? Does DS5.2 have the correct schema for my needs? Which exact schema does dovecot use? Maybe I can check and see what's in there and what needs to be added/extended. I think that's it for now. ;) -brian

I cannot manage to copy the emails from one server to the other, however the dry-run from imapsync works nicely. Hello, we're running RC2 and seeing a problem with the way SSL certs are handled by Dovecot. We've set ssl_verify_client_cert=yes and ssl_require_valid_client_cert=no. Note that the certificates are all valid and have not expired. The <user cert> is signed by the <CA cert> and we set ssl_ca_file to the CA certificate PEM file. Ideally, we'd like to only accept login requests from users which have a valid certificate signed by our CA. Even better would be an approach such as the one taken by Postfix where you have to provide a list of valid MD5 hash sums for the users you'd like to accept. Unfortunately, their dovecot packaging has not been recently updated: dovecot-common-1.0.beta3-3ubuntu5.2 dovecot-imapd-1.0.beta3-3ubuntu5.2 dovecot-pop3d-1.0.beta3-3ubuntu5.2 postfix-2.2.10-1ubuntu0.1 I have 'universe' enabled. Does anyone know of an alternate repository for bleeding-edge dovecot and postfix packages? As a debian/ubuntu newbie, I don't expect that rolling my own properly secure package is practical or advisable at this early stage. Thanks.

Dear List, I have a problem copying lots of IMAP-messages from one server running Dovecot 0.99 over to my new server running dovecot 1.0rc2. It is damn slow and after a minute only 1 or 2 messages are copied. I tried with thunderbird and sylpheed-claws as email client. I guess it has something to do with the connections which terminates after each copy?! Perhaps someone has a clue? This may be a dumb question, but I'll ask because... :) I've got dovecot installed and running successfully on OpenBSD 3.9 (this *really* was an easy setup, my hat's off to the developer(s)). And the other employees can now use MS Access to read their mail (they didn't like mutt and pine via SSH - go figger'). So my final challenge is to get things configured so that they can also *send* mail through the same host that dovecot is installed on. I *think* this has to be configured in sendmail, but I'm hoping that someone can confirm that before I start reading. Thanks, Jay

I have successfully run dovecot on three out of four of the servers I use. They all run Fedora Core 2 or 4. But when I installed dovecot on a Mandrake server I have using urpmi, I can't start dovecot there. [Dovecot] IMAP issues?

I've probably done something dumb, but a quick search on Google, etc has turned up nothing I recognized as useful. I just installed dovecot on an OpenBSD 3.9 box. It is working fine with secure POP3 (after changing the config file to "mbox_write_locks = fcntl"). I also selected secure IMAP as a protocol, but it is proving to be more resistant to working. I am trying to connect to dovecot using Outlook as a client (sigh). Outlook's error messages are to the effect that it is unable to connect to the server. Looking in /var/log/maillog indicates that a connection was not even attempted! I've configured the client to use SSL (port 993), and tried diddling with some of the other parameters to no avail. I also tried to connect using the Thunderbird IMAP client with similar results. I've obviously missed something in my dovecot setup, but just don't see it... can anyone offer a clue? Thnx, Jay

I jumped right in and followed the "Quick Configuration" guide after installing dovecot (dovecot-1.0.beta3.tgz) on my OpenBSD 3.9 box. I had previously been using akpop3d (which worked, but was flaky). FreeBSD 6.1 STABLE I am using a basic MBOX mail setup. I have noticed that when the MBOX size starts to grow, say 35-30M or more, Dovecot will not always deliver the mail via POP on the first attempt. In fact, in some cases it takes four or five attempts before it will actually deliver the mail. Is there some setting that I should be changing? Hi list, my ldap directory uses DNs like this: uid=solist,ou=People,dc=solistland,dc=net,ou=Virtuals but I only could use something like uid=solist,ou=People,dc=solistland.net,ou=Virtuals with dovecot, which obviously isn't what the dcObject object class was meant to present. I've written a small function for var-expand.c which introduces a new modifier for string variable expansions, %D (arbitrarily chosen), which substitutes dots to ",dc=". You might want to include that in dovecot's code base, after bringing it up to dovecot standards of course. :-) Example of use: base = ou=People,dc=%Dd,ou=Virtuals Warning: I'm a beginner in C and could only understand so much of dovecot's code, so this patch is a hack at best. Hello all, We are using Horde/IMP and we are having problems deleting messages from accounts where the user is very close to going over quota. My test environment includes: Horde 3 IMP 4.1.2 dovecot 1.0rc2 postfix maildrop I created a user and set the quota at 13MB. I then sent a 10MB file to the user - which was received. However, when I attempt to move the message from the INBOX to Trash, I get a Quota Exceeded error. Is this more of an IMP error than a dovecot quirk? Is the message size credited back to the quota after the message has been removed from the INBOX? In your "http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/Dict" documentation, the table to create is : create table quota ( path varchar(255) not null primary key, username varchar(255) not null, current integer ); "path" field is the primary key. But when i see the SELECT queries, "path" is always used ('quota/storage') and username too. I don't understand... If "path" is the primary key, it must be unique in quota table ? Perhaps the table would be like this : create table quota ( path varchar(255) not null, username varchar(255) not null, current integer, primary key (path, username) ); No ? [Dovecot] POP does not seem to be working

OK, I am brand new to this so please bear with me. I have an FreeBSD 6.1 STABLE system. Postfix is installed with qpopper. The mailboxes are standard mbox format. I just installed Dovecot. At some point I want to update to a mdir format, etc., but quite frankly I do not know how to go about that. In any case, I shut down qpopper and started Dovecot. I modified the Dovecot.conf file SSL settings (turned them off) since I do not have the files it needs built yet. Anyway, when using a mail client on another PC on my network, although it makes a connection, no mail is ever downloaded. Ther is mail in the folders however. Obviously I am doing something really wrong, but I am not sure what. I would sure appreciate any assistance available. The only information I have is in the 'log' file which shows the a pop3-login, the user name, method=PLAIN, and two numeric addresses. Thanks! -- Gerard Seibert gerard(a)seibercom.net

I am trying to install dovecot as a second pop3 service in my RH9 system. It is a Cpanel based system using Courier for primary IP By primary I mean all the other domains use courier on xxx.xxx.xxx.21 port 110 I have a domain with special pop3 needs that is dedicated to xxx.xxx.xxx.22 port 110 The two mail systems are installed, I can tell via telenet that dovecot is listening and responding on the desired IP and port Cpanel is the tool being used by all domains to create mail accounts and hence setting the 'policy' for the mailboxes, userdb and passdb information. I am trying to make dovecot use those files and can't get past authentication. What I guess I don't know is the encryption type being used by Cpanel Any help appreciated.!!!! I do not have much experience in setting up imap servers - only that I have tried several and experienced the same problem with all of them. I suppose that is because I do not really know the in's and out's of an imap server. What I want to do is to setup an IMAP server on my PC with full access to all the emails already there in a maildir structure. I have the following setup: fetchmail -> procmail -> maildir exim for outgoing mail. When I install an imap server, I loose access to my present emails in ~/Mail and most imap-servers (dovecot included) seems to create a new structure within ~/Mail. ~/Maildir is a symlink to ~/Mail. Now my questions: 1. How do I set up dovecot to serve the present maildir to the user? 2. Related to 1: How do I migrate my emails to the new imap-maildir structure without losing any? 3. How would my present procmail-setup change? But I have a problem regarding quota limits, I am using quota plugin on imap, pop3 and LDA, the deliver agent blocks new messages for delivery, like hard quota. Hi, Would it be possible to make a change in the configure file to search for gssapi.h in <kerberosV/gssapi.h> if it fails to find it in <gssapi/gssapi.h>? That would allow to compile dovecot with gssapi easily on OpenBSD without patching it.

[Dovecot] making Dovecot match Courier POP3 UID's

Hi, guys. I've read the information in the Wiki about making dovecot's UID's match Courier's UID's in the POP3 server, so that a UIDL command on either server will return the same UID's for the same group of messages. However, what I've read doesn't match what I'm seeing in Courier. Courier appears to keep the UID numbers for messages that it uses for the POP3 server separate from the UID numbers for the IMAP server. Courier has a file: courierpop3dsizelist which has a line for every message, like: 1129610881.6075832619.blade4:2,S 2361 1478:1065670602 1129727025.1168007000.blade1:2,S 14718 1479:1065670602 1130005953.3295720403.blade5:2,S 1554 1481:1065670602 1130108068.0849623942.blade5:2,S 8246 1482:1065670602 The first column is the maildir filename, the last column is the UID that the POP3 server uses and the UID validity. Both are used to create the UID number returned by UIDL. The IMAP server uses a completely different UID number that's stored in courierimapuiddb. So, it seems to me that dovecot can't ever match Courier's UID numbers for the POP3 server unless it reads and interprets this courierpop3dsizelist file. My Courier-IMAP installation is Courier-IMAP 4.0.6. Any ideas? This is a real hassle because it means I can't switch the POP3 server from Courier to Dovecot or, if I do, lots of my users will download every message again which is just unacceptable. Thanks Jeff

[Dovecot] proxy performance

Can anyone speak to experience using Dovecot proxy to frontend for multiple back-end servers in a "large" environment? We have 50,000+ mailboxes spread across 10 POP/IMAP servers. We'd like to be able to put in a front-end setup on our load-balancer of 4 dual-CPU Sun systems. I am a bit concerned about performance issues although from what I have read the proxy can be set not to fork, which improves performance a lot. Still concerned about whether SSL loading will be an issue. We'd like to use LDAP to look up the reference to which mail-store a user is on. I see that the Wiki refers to SQL. The mailing list indicates passwd-file also works. Not clear about LDAP.

[Dovecot] /var/spool/mail directory size and subdirectories

(Complete newbie to dovecot. I hope what follows isn't something I've missed in some FAQ somewhere...) On a traditional UNIX filesystem with UW-IMAP several years ago, we encountered major performance problems when "/var/spool/mail/" got big (we would currently be ~20,000 entries). This was due to the inefficiency of the UNIX filesystem when creating and deleting the lockfiles (etc.) in a directory of that size. We worked around that (all those years ago) with a local source-code mod to UW-IMAP ("c-client") to use subdirectories "/var/spool/mail/00/" to "/var/spool/mail/99/" based on a trivially simply "uid mod 100" algorithm. (Our uids are random; our usernames are not.) Thus we had 100 subdirs each of about 200 entires. Efficiency and performance vastly improved, and we've been running like that ever since. Now we are considering migrating to dovecot... Does dovecot do file creation/deletion in this (or similar shared) directory? (And so would it be liable to the same inefficiency problems?) Is there some means in the "dovecot.conf" file to specify an INBOX pattern as "/var/spool/mail/%ZZZ%/%u" where "%ZZZ%" could be algorithmically specified as (say) "user-uid mod 100"? -- : David Lee I.T. Hi Timo I've been seeing data corruption in the lda when forwarding mail. I think it's due to confused file pointers. [Dovecot] strange dropping of Word.doc-attachements - sendmail dovecot RHEL4

Hi, we have a strange problem: two of our users informed me, that they aren't able to send word-.doc-files anymore while othe attachements work fine. The e-mail gets deliverd, but the attachement is dropped. This happens using the latest thunderbird 1.5.x and mac os x. The e-mail is also not saved in the send-drawer. If the users send the same e-mail to the same recepient using an other mailclient, there is no problem. Other users (like me) using the same systemsettings and software versions don't have the problem. The server is RHEL 4 (2.6.9-kernel), sendmail 8.13.1 and dovecot 0.99. We use Mailscanner and spamassassin too, but as only the two users do have the problem I'm looking for some help to track this problem down. Any ideas?? I have a big problem with our cluster, if i read my mail with POP3 client (and check the option, keep a copy on server), every time I read my mail, my client retrive ALL messages an the mailbox !!! I test this with: - Apple Mail 1.0 + 2.0 - M$ Outlook 2000 + 2003 - Thunderbird We use: - Dovecot RC1 - Postfix on Debian Sarge (stable) Can you know this bug ? Or have a workaround ? Hi ya'll I'm using dovecot 0.99.11 and I have a doubt about some folders. The Inbox folder is greyed out on most of my clients, and I just cannot move any message (on other folders) into inbox. I'd like to know if I can do that. Besides that, when I select the Drafts folder I get the "Mailbox isn't selectable" warning, and cannot save any drafts there so, how could I change that? Can somebody post details for how to get maildir++ quotas working in the latest CVS? I have tried but can't get the CAPABILITY string to show "QUOTA"; and the GETQUOTAROOT command is recognized, but returns nothing... 2 GETQUOTAROOT INBOX * QUOTAROOT "INBOX" "" * QUOTA "" () 2 OK Getquotaroot completed. So I suspect that I am not returning a valid quota value from the user database. I am returning what my old Courier-IMAP wants to see "1073741824S,4000C"... if the format for Dovecot is different, what should the format be? So there are two problems that I am trying to resolve, but I'm not sure how to go about fixing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated: (1) Dovecot isn't announcing QUOTA support in the capability string. (2) Dovecot isn't getting a valid quota limit, which I assume is breaking the GETQUOTAROOT command. Thanks, Bill

[Dovecot] Postfix Virtual Users and Directory Permissions

I have followed the instruction here: http://www.postfix.org/VIRTUAL_README.html#virtual_mailbox There are five virtual domains configured and each directory containing each domain is owned by one UID/UID with permissions of 700. I can send mail to each domain and it is stored in the appropriate Maildir under the correct directory. The system is OpenBSD 3.8 STABLE. So far, so good. Now comes Dovecot. What I would like to do is to have one set of credentials for 4 of the domains, and another for the remaining. I would also like to *not* use a database backend for authentication at this time and would prefer to stick with standard UNIX /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow. Considering the directories are all owned by one user, does Dovecot need to be configured to use the same user as auth_userdb = static? That would make sense. What I'm not clear on is how Dovecot would know which domains are associated with which user, and does the user need permissions to those directories or is that handled by impersonation? [Dovecot] pop3 auth problem solved!

Fellow techies, OK... This is going to go down as one of those "D'Oh!" moments in the world of computers. Boy, do I feel dumb... In short: I found the problem. One miserable little line in 'dovecot.conf' called 'auth_default_realm =.' I had this set to 'bluefeathertech.com,' thinking it was necessary to do so. I was wrong, at least for my environment, and the stupid clues were right in front of me in the logfile all the time! For the benefit of others who may run into this: Setting a domain name in this entry causes that domain name to be automatically appended to usernames when they log in. No wonder nothing ever matched in /etc/passwd! My deepest thanks to Frank Cusack for giving me the idea. Fellow users, This is just a heads-up to let the list know that I'm still unable to get ANY sort of pop3 or pop3s authentication to work with Dovecot. Just as a sanity check, I set up an entirely separate system, running FreeBSD 6.1 production, postfix 2.3, and Dovecot 1.0rc2, as a testbed. I got the exact same problem that I had with the NetBSD 3.0 production server, specifically that Dovecot refuses to authenticate a user with either basic pop3 or pop3s. The way I see it, I may as well try to get basic pop3 working first. If it doesn't, pop3s will never work. Note that pam was added just as an experiment. [Dovecot] auth with kerberos

Hello, I am running dovecot 1.0RC2 and I'd like to know if there is a way to make dovecot provide PLAIN, LOGIN, CRAM-MD5, NTLM authentications from a kerberos database. GSSAPI works great, but I currently have to have two password databases, one for GSSAPI and one for all the others. What I'd like is to have only one password database (namely kerberos). I know that cyrus-sasl (which most of you don't like I think ;)) can provide such authentications, but I haven't found the way to configure dovecot to do the same. Any input welcome.

Hi All, I've recently upgraded to RC2 (debian package) and now I get the following message in syslog all the time: Jul 14 15:51:04 server01 deliver(alex): saved mail to INBOX This seems to happen for every mail, despite some being filtered into different folders. It goes like this: Mail arrives from Ubuntu mailing list: Jul 14 15:53:49 server01 postfix/qmgr[19023]: D51A95C023: from=<ubuntu-users-bounces(a)lists.ubuntu.com>, size=4319, nrcpt=1 (queue active) I get this message: Jul 14 15:53:51 server01 deliver(alex): saved mail to INBOX Postfix sends to deliver: Jul 14 15:53:51 server01 postfix/local[29843]: D51A95C023: to=<alex(a)placet.co.uk>, relay=local, delay=29, status=sent (delivered to command: /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver) ...and a few seconds later it shows up in my Ubuntu-Users folder, exactly where my sieve rule sends it. [Dovecot] Backing up mail

Greetings, in backing up mail stored according to default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u is it safe *not* to backup the .imap subdirectory ? I am currently using dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3. When restoring, I guess the safe option would be to zap the contents of .imap so that it gets rebuilt, correct ? Thank you for your consideration, Davide Bolcioni -- Paranoia is a survival asset.

[Dovecot] TLS Issues - Plain Text login?

I'm trying to setup IMAP, so that it works via secure connections. I have it working fine over SSL, now I wish to get TLS to work. I have set imap and imaps to both listen on *, and have disable_plaintext_auth = yes, which according to the docs, Disable LOGIN command and all other plaintext authentications unless SSL/TLS is used (LOGINDISABLED capability). So the problem is now, that TLS doesn't work. Trying it with thunderbird, I get a message about login being disabled, and to check my settings and such. The port is correct (imap, not imaps), and I have it to always use TLS. I see the following in my logs Jul 14 16:35:46 mafeking dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login: rip=58.7.136.163, lip=203.30.47.34, TLS Any ideas? To me it appears to be using TLS, so why doesn't thunderbird work? Is it the LOGINDISABLED capa keyword? Is it dovecot telling Thunderbird the wrong capa when using TLS? It all works fine with SSL, and the port (in thunderbird) set to the imaps port. The logs show lines like below when using SSL. Jul 14 16:36:32 mafeking dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<joeblogs>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured Any ideas? Or should I just force SSL?
