Hi, I am running into trouble getting things set up correctly for postfix + virtual domains (using ldap) with dovecot LDA. I can get it to work without LDA, but I'm running into permissions problems when I try to run with LDA. I am wondering if anyone has any good examples of configuring this. It would seem that we can't deliver in setuid mode, even though the documentation seemed to indicate that we can. I basically have a 'vmail' user (1015) that owns a /var/vmail/domains directory tree. [Dovecot] greetings and logging

Howdy, I've been working with a new CentOS installation and this is my first experience with dovecot. I would like dovecot to provide more logging, however I'm not finding much on how to alter it's logging. http://wiki.dovecot.org/DovecotFeatures speaks of having Logging Control. i use openbsd/i386, dovecot-1.0b7 i see the error message in maillog dovecot: statfs(mail/username) failed: No such file or directory i guess the statfs() can not find the directory, because i run dovecot-imap in chroot userdb static { args = uid=34567 gid=34567 home=/var/./mail } i am sure, i have this directory "/var/mail/username", and i add "nfs_check = no" to dovecot.conf, the error message will gone

Hi is it possible to have the .imap directory and sub-directory located under the same directory as mbox users. i.e /var/spool/mail/%u is where mbox files are i would like to use /var/spool/maildir/%u/.imap reason being i do not want my users /home/username used for anything otherthan their website. how big do the files under .imap get? Hello Timo and other dovecot-dev or users, It looks like Dovecot accepts (with APPEND command) messages that begins with 'From[SPACE]' line, which are not valid from RFC 2822 point of view. Additionnally, Dovecot will store them as they are APPENDed, I mean with the starting 'From[SPACE]' line, which generates a bad Maildir format. http://www.qmail.org/man/man5/maildir.html states the following : << Each file in new is a newly delivered mail message. The modification time of the file is the delivery date of the message. The message is delivered without an extra UUCP- style From_ line, without any >From quoting, and without an extra blank line at the end. The message is normally in RFC 822 format, starting with a Return-Path line and a Delivered-To line, but it could contain arbitrary binary data. Hi folks! It looks like Timo nailed down the NFS issues we've been seeing here in last night's CVS build. Anyone running Dovecot in a high-usage environment should check this out. Here are some relevant ChangeLog updates that seem to address the problem: 2006-05-02 11:11 Timo Sirainen <timo.sirainen(a)movial.fi> * src/lib-storage/index/maildir/: maildir-save.c, maildir-storage.h, maildir-sync.c, maildir-uidlist.c, maildir-uidlist.h: Adding mail to index while saving it had a race condition. Fixing it required a bit larger changes. Switched uidlist/index locking order so that uidlist is now locked first. 2006-05-02 11:04 Timo Sirainen <timo.sirainen(a)movial.fi> * src/lib-index/: mail-index-private.h, mail-index-sync-update.c, mail-index.c: mmap_disable: When syncing in-memory index from transaction log, we didn't skip external transactions which were already been in our in-memory mapping, causing "Append with UID n, but next_uid = m" errors. Dear all, Getting lots of these errors in our maillog with the INDEX changed: dovecot: IMAP(ghenry): fchown() failed with file /home/ghenry/Maildir/index/.INBOX/dovecot.index.tmp: Operation not permitted For .log and .cache as well. We have: location = maildir:/home/%u/Maildir:CONTROL=%h/Maildir/control:INDEX=%h/Maildir/index I looked in safe-mkdir.c and saw: fchown() failed for (line 42) to change the owner first, so don't know why we are getting this error? If pop3_lock_session = yes, how does Dovecot LDA handle the situation when the pop3 mbox is locked? Does it requeue mail for later delivery immediately (EX_TEMPFAIL), or wait until mbox_lock_timeout? Thanks, Ken A. Pacific.Net

Hi, I just want to install dovecot 1.0 beta7 from atrpm and noted that it depends on a non official dependency. If you have RHEL4 (Centos) 4.3 fully updated and you try to install: http://dl.atrpms.net/all/dovecot-1.0-0_10.99.beta7.el4.at.i386.rpm You get this error: # rpm -ivh dovecot-1.0-0_10.99.beta7.el4.at.i386.rpm error: Failed dependencies: openssl >= 0.9.7f-4 is needed by dovecot-1.0-0_10.99.beta7.el4.at.i386 The lates official openssl version for RHEL 4.3 is: # rpm -q openssl openssl-0.9.7a-43.8 I think I can solve this problem by compiling the src.rpm, but I get this error: # rpmbuild --rebuild --target=i686 --clean dovecot-1.0-0_10.99.beta7.el4.at.src.rpm Installing /opt/shares/tmp/dovecot-1.0-0_10.99.beta7.el4.at.src.rpm Building target platforms: i686 Building for target i686 error: line 4: Tag takes single token only: Release: 0_%atrelease 10.99.beta7 How can I compile the .src.rpm from atrpm? [Dovecot] running only the dovecot-auth service

Hi, we are just testing postfix 2.3 in combination with its new dovecot SASL plugin. Now what we would like to have was dovecot SASL without acutally running dovecot ... The reason for this is because we have the "real" dovecot running on a different server than the postfix instance and it would be nice if it would not be necessary running an "full" dovecot on that server for only SASL support. So is it possible to start only the "dovecot-auth" part of dovecot? Another idea that I had was to export the created auth socket via nfs. Somewhere, sometimes I think to have read that it was possible to use unix domain sockets over nfs mounted shares, but I am not sure about this (and have failed so far). It's getting weirder and weirder. 1) imap works fine when i connect to this dovecot from a remote client (e.g. thunderbird or scripts provided above) 2) everything works fine when i use the troubled box and connect to a remote dovecot server, using telnet and the scripts provided above. 3) the scripts above do work when used with localhost but they are extremely slow. It takes about 1,5 to 2 minutes to complete just to perform a login/logout sequence. Seems to be something wrong with connecting to localhost on that port. Can't pinpoint what it is. Oh by the way, results do not differ when the firewall is enabled or disabled. Floris

Hello I'm attempting to configure Dovecot with mysql support so I'm able to have a single database of users and point both postfix and dovecot to this db. I currently have an rpm src that I have download and placed in my RPMBUILDROOT of my linux box. Next I configured the .spec file and attempted to run a rpmbuild -bb Near the end of the install phase I receive an error which has me stumped. I ran rpmbuild again and used the -bi --short-circuit options and logged the output for you to see. I like this unofficial survey of hardware but wondering what MTA and spam filtering everyone is using. I do front end spam filtering for other servers as well. (junkemailfilter.com) I'm using Exim 4.61 SpamAssassin 3.11 Some version of DSpam that I'm experimenting with Most of my spam filtering happens on the Exim level. My mail spam filter server is: AMD 3800 Dual Core Athlon 2 100gb SATA drives 4 gigs ram 64 bit Fedora Core 4 2 backup servers on higher MX recored that are similar configuration.

Hello, I have run into troubles trying to jump from 1.0alpha5 (basically running smoothly) to 1.0beta5 and/or beta7. While I tweaked settings for the differences between the 1.0a5 conf file and the beta conf file, things are fundamentally the same between them. The other critical element to this is that imap-login sessions are being left around and the load average climbs inexorably. (It reached 50 on this dual dual-core machine before I killed things off and started the daemon from scratch.) This occurs for users using a whole array of clients: Thunderbird, SquirrelMail, Eudora, Apple Mail, etc. How can I track this down or can someone please help me figure out what is happening here? (I have been unable to find answers between the mailing list archives and Google.) Thanks in advance, David P.S. But like Curtis and Brent, I found that Outlook and Outlook Express display "incorrect" dates on messages uploaded via APPEND. That's because they sort messages using INTERNALDATE: wea3 SELECT "Test Folder" pqng UID FETCH 1:* (UID FLAGS RFC822.SIZE BODY.PEEK[HEADER] INTERNALDATE) Some have created scripts to sync file timestamps with "Date" headers, which conflicts with the concept of "INTERNALDATE". Others ask users to add the "Date Sent" column, but those dates are only revealed after a message is viewed. [Dovecot] Expunge is not expunging unless it is called twice

Dovecot is requiring two "expunge" calls before it deletes an email. It just seems to ignore the first expunge call, leaving the email file in the maildir cur/ folder. Any idea why? [Dovecot] Dovecot LDA - Performance/issues versus postfix delivery? Also, installing on OS X?

Can anyone give me an idea of whether or not dovecot-lda can solve the following issue: We seem to have constantly-corrupting dovecot* files for people who fit one (or more) of the following categories: 1) 1000+ message inboxes; 2) multiple clients simultaneously checking mail; 3) people receiving a lot of mail, and/or the server receiving and trying to deliver a single message to all users at once We're using straight postfix maildir delivery, and while the mail keeps coming, we start to see a lot of "temp.xxxx.xxxx.xxx" type lockfiles build up after any inconsistencies appear in the Inbox indexes, and clients start to report timeouts and/or crash as a result. Would switching to LDA by itself resolve this issue (on the argument that delivery would ALSO update the indexes every time), or is there some more fundamental issue we are having that is causing the inconsistency to arise? On a related note: I noticed the darwinports version of 1.0beta7 does not include the code for dovecot-lda... Does anyone have experience setting this up? Thanks! -deano

Do these hurt?: May 2 13:41:30 sysname dovecot: POP3(xxxx): madvise() failed with file /users/xx/xxxx/Maildir/dovecot.index.log: Operation not supported I think not, since I've been seeing them forever. But they do muddy the logs. This is on an old BSD/OS server, where the man page for madvise ends with: BUGS This call is not yet supported. The messages are *only* about index.log files. Would it be possible to either suppress the log message if the error is specifically "not supported" or, better yet, detect it at configure time? Completely understandable if it's not worth the effort, though. mm

[Dovecot] Assertion failed

We're in a bit of a panic here as we're getting a lot of errors along the lines of: May 2 12:39:00 lenny dovecot: IMAP(XXXXX): file mbox-sync-rewrite.c: line 106 (mbox_sync_headers_add_space): assertion failed: (start_pos < data_size) We didn't see this until our mail servers went under a full load and now we've trashed the ability of nearly all our users to read email. We saw this first under 1.0Beta3 and we've tried building 1.0Beta7 and its made no difference. I've tried fiddling with the "dirty" settings for the indices and banning mmap to see if there's any way way of avoiding the broken code, but with no luck. We're running White Box EL4 (2.6 Linux kernel) Does anyone know a workaround or whether there is an older version that doesn't have the bug? [Dovecot] Dovecot and NFS with file locking

Greetings all, I'm trying to get an understanding of a problem we are facing here. We're currently running dovecot 1.0-beta3 and have a long standing issue of system crashes on our mail server (Debian Linux 2.4.27-2-k7-smp). Here's what is happening: The machine hangs and the system load climbs as high as 80.0+. Yet, the system response is not effected. Command line is still responds instantly. There are multiple running dovecot PIDs, even if I stop the service. If I try to kill or -9 the PIDs, they will not die. The machine is DOA and must be forcefully restarted. Issuing a reboot will cause the machine to hang when it attempts to unmount network shares. Here's the setup: - Dovecot 1.0-beta3 - lock_method = dotlock - mmap_disable = yes /var/mail is store locally on the mail server and access via NFS to ALL remote machines. All remote machines have /var/mail sym linked to the NFS share on Mail. /home on Mail is NFS'd to another set of servers where IMAP mail folders reside in mbox format. All client machines have /home sym linked to the second NFS server. In other words, there's a lot of NFS shares and one mail transaction can involve 3 machines. What I'm trying to find out is the current state of NFS locking with Dovecot. This system hang happens 1-3 times a week. The current /home NFS mounts are running from SGI machines on IRIX 6.5. Clients are all Linux (debian) 2.4 or Linux (ubuntu) 2.6. Is our setup too much for Dovecot to handle? Are there other variables we're not looking at here? There's some strange problem with forwarding messages from thundebird, the body of the forwarded message is always completely blank - 0 byte size. Forwarding from squrrel, horde, eudora and outlook works fine. Client setup on thunderbird installs hasn't changed a bit. I'm still investigating why this is happening. Has anyone run into this ?

Since version 1.0 I experience strange problems with dovecot. At the moment I have beta 7 installed. I use FreeBSD 6.0. * Pop3 works * Imap works, but only when i telnet to localhost * In all other cases I can't connect to the server. Tried with squirrelmail, uebimau and thunderbird. Squirrelmail after a long time waiting: "ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server." Happens too with firewall switched off. Happens too when i restart exim and dovecot. /var/log/maillog mentions something about Inactivity. When i do tail -f /var/log/maillog and try to connect using squirrel, i see hardly any imap messages fly by, except 'inactivity'. Any ideas? Floris

Hi, we run a dovecot mail-server with about 50GB of e-mail and at the moment users are responsebil for macking ther own backup of e-mails. But I'd like to have also a backup of the mail, beckause not all users do ther backups ... We use mbox-format-mailboxes. Any ideas how to backup the mailboxes without stopping the server, doing a backup to disk/tape/...? Thanks for any ideas ant tips! Hello to all! I'm using IMAP-based antispam self-learning. I have a folder "spam" in each Maildir in which I place spam-tagged messages during delivery. If antispam filter makes mistake, user can drag'n'drop message to/from "spam" folder. I running perl-script periodicaly and retrain spam-filter (dSpam). Now I must scan all messages, but it's not a good practice (server load depends from mail volume, not user activity) so I want add a "hook" to IMAP-server, i.e. I want server to report me something like "date: file1 -> file2" via any IPC (socket?) or log file while user moves messages across different mail folders. Overload from antispam retraining will be function from user activity with such feature added. P.S.: Now I'm using courier, but want to try dovecot. Sorry for bad English. hi all just a quick question i have dovecot (0.99.14 yum install) running on my fc4 server to get this working, i had to downgrade from mysql 5 to fedora's mysql rpm's i really would prefer to use mysql 5, but to satisfy the dependencies, i had to go to mysql 4 now, i just want to know if there is an rpm (linux rather than specific fc4 version is fine) out there for dovecot, that i can use with mysql 5 definitely prefer rpm's to src as i don't really like getting into the nitty gritty of config/setup thanks dave -- http://dtracorp.com

Hello I'm attempting to configure Dovecot with mysql support so I'm able to have a single database of users and point both postfix and dovecot to this db. I currently have an rpm src that I have download and placed in my RPMBUILDROOT of my linux box. Next I configured the .spec file and attempted to run a rpmbuild -bb Near the end of the install phase I receive an error which has me stumped. I ran rpmbuild again and used the -bi --short-circuit options and logged the output for you to see. Hi all, I'm running fedora core 5 with postfix 2.2.8 (modified rpm version) and dovecot 1.0 beta7 and dovecot-lda nighly cvs snapshot from 14-04-2006 I might need to add that amavisd-new is configured as a content-filter. I have postfix running using virtual users in an mysql database and I have setup dovecot lda in postfix like the wiki says here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA#head-dacb9b9a1f19c3ea86bb6f8caa3d64e3ddad9ef8 When I sent an email using this setup I get the following error in my maillog: May 1 20:41:29 calimero postfix/pipe[15760]: 8337934FABB: to=< mark(a)mydomain.com>, relay=dovecot, delay=0, status=bounced (Command died with status 2: "/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver". Command output: input in flex scanner failed ) I really don't know if this is a configuration problem or a bug and how I can get more information about the error note: I haven't included config-files, but if they are needed I will provide those of course Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Building a newer version of Dovecot on Fedora is dead simple: ./configure --with-mysql make make install And you absolutely DO NOT want to run Dovecot with MySQL authentication using the 0.99 builds. Since version 1.0 I experience strange problems with dovecot. At the moment I have beta 7 installed. I use FreeBSD 6.0. * Pop3 works * Imap works, but only when i telnet to localhost * In all other cases I can't connect to the server. Tried with squirrelmail, uebimau and thunderbird. Squirrelmail after a long time waiting: "ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server." Happens too with firewall switched off. Happens too when i restart exim and dovecot. /var/log/maillog mentions something about Inactivity. When i do tail -f /var/log/maillog and try to connect using squirrel, i see hardly any imap messages fly by, except 'inactivity'. Any ideas? Floris

I am running dovecot and dovecot-lda. Mail is delivered from my ISP via cron script using fetchmail. Over the last few days, there has been a selinux problem which gave permission denied problems whenever deliver would try to store mail in Maildir. I have a big blank spot in my incoming email from about Wed evening (when the latest FC5 upgrade (..) was installed to a few hours ago when I recognized that I may have a problem. Question: What does dovecot deliver do with a message that it cannot store due to permission problems?

I'm running beta7 on two machines, with maildir on NFS. I have lockd running on all machines. I've found that Dovecot is highly unstable with NFS when accessing a mailbox on more than one machine at the same time. Both dovecot machines have: mmap_disable = yes lock_method = fcntl NFS is version 3, exported from a third linux machine. All machines are running 2.6.9 kernel. Any ideas what's going wrong here? Hello all.. I'm trying to configure dovecot do athenticate using mysql, but I?m having some troubles... After configuring the mysql athentication in dovecot-mysql.conf and in dovecot.conf, when I try to login I get this mesage in my logs: Dovecot-auth: MySQL: Can't connect to database dovecot: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) Any ideia why this happens and how to fix it? I hacked some command line options into imaptest. I dont think I broke it.. Place into dovecot-source root as usual and compile with: gcc imaptest.c -o imaptest -Wall -W -I. -Isrc/lib -DHAVE_CONFIG_H src/lib/liblib.a As per Timo's instructions. # imaptest -h imaptest [USER@IP:PORTNO] [pass=PASSWORD] [mbox=MBOX] [clients=CC] [msgs=NMSG] [use_authenticate] [PORTNO] USER = template for username. "u%04d" will generate users "u0001" to "u0100" MBOX = path to mbox from which we read mails to append. CC = number of concurrent clients. [20] NMSG = target number of messages in INBOX. [100] If use_authenticate is given AUTHENTICATE will be used instead of LOGIN. Have fun! [Dovecot] setuid(5000) failed: Resource temporarily unavailable

I have combed google for days searching for an answer to this but cannot find anything anywhere, I'm hoping that posting to this list will get me the solution. I have FC4 running dovecot v1.0.beta7 to serve my POP3 (I had to install v1.0.beta7 because it's on a x86_64 and I need mysql support). It runs great for about two hours, after which I start getting the resource temporarily unavailable error. I can't get the error to go away by restarting dovecot, the only way I can figure out to do it is to restart the box. This is terribly annoying... please help! Thanks!

OK, I am running (for many years now) an existing courier_imap maildir ++ setup with exim as the MTA. Has been fine. I have my own custom ldap schema for user account definition and authorization. I installed dovecot 1.0 beta 7 as a test and have it listening on a different port. I would like, if possible, to set things up so that a user could use either dovecot or courier. Having to re-subscribe to folders is OK when moving to dovecot. (It would be nice to be able to make a symbolic link from courier's subscription file to the dovecot one though) (My client for testing is the Mac OS X (10.4.6) Mail client Mail.app -- it seems to do an auto subscribe to folders) I set up a namespace for dovecot, using the wiki as a guide, so: namespace private { # Hierarchy separator to use. I have my own custom schema for email that I have been using for years with courier_imap and exim. I am experimenting with dovecot and trying to set up my conf so that it logs in using the ldap database. In the dovecot-ldap.conf there is a section # Filter for user lookup. Some variables can be used (see # http://wiki.dovecot.org/Variables for full list): # %u - username # %n - user part in user@domain, same as %u if there's no domain # %d - domain part in user@domain, empty if user there's no domain #user_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=%u)) In order to match my scheme I changed it to user_filter = (&(objectClass=shireNetEmailaccount) (shireNetEmailAddress=%u)) This should match my courier setup of ##NAME: LDAP_MAIL:0 # # Here's the field on which we query #LDAP_MAIL mail LDAP_MAIL shireNetEmailAddress --- Anyway, it appears from the logs that my user_filter is being ignored as I get the following in the log dovecot: Apr 26 11:24:35 Info: auth(default): ldap(chad(a)rkba.com, 67.171.127.191): base=dc=shire, dc=net scope=subtree filter=(& (objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=chad(a)rkba.com)) fields=shireNetUserPassword which shows the original default user_filter What do I need to do to have it use the one I give in the dovecat- ldap.conf and not the default? [Dovecot] problems getting dovecot-LDA to work

(hopefully with the ability to support imap-quotas) anyways, i've got it all compiled fine (as far as I can tell) and following the directions on the wiki for setting up dovecot LDA with sendmail. (I've had to alter the configuration a bit since using the mailertable didn't work with my actual hostname). when I try to use /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver via sendmail, i get a EX_TEMPFAIL. I logged into the machine as the user I'm trying to deliver mail for and do the following: /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d alan and get the following error: deliver: Error: Ambiguous mail location setting, don't know what to do with it: /var/spool/mail/alan (try prefixing it with mbox: or maildir:) deliver: Fatal: Failed to create storage for 'alan' with mail '/var/spool/mail/alan' in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf I have the following: protocol lda { postmaster_address = postmaster(a)pluto.valueclick.ne.jp auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master location = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/indexes/%u } I tried setting the default_mail_env with the same settings but got the same results (i did a complete restart of the dovecot services) I've even specified the config file with: /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -c /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf -d alan with the same results. Dear all, We would like to setup, if possible, for example: We have 4 example groups, we various users in those groups: Directors director1,director2 Support manager1,support1,support2,support3 Enquiries manager2,enquiry1,enquiry2,enquiry3 Accounts manager3, accounts1,account2 Shared Mailboxes: Support: Support, user1, user2, user3 Accounts: Directors, Support So basically, we want 2 public folder shares, with the names: Support Accounts Everyone in the Support group and user1-3 should be able to subscribe to the "Support" share. Everyone in the Directors and Support groups should be able to subscribe to the Accounts shares (only an example ;-) ). We also need to set it up that the Managers have visible in the available shares, all the employees that they look after. No private e-mail allowed. Symlinks for this? Is this possible? We already have the subscribtion file and index files saved in their own homedirs. Not sure how to even think about dovecot-shared file and symlinks etc? Hi All Just trying to config dovecot and I'm guessing there's been a change in the app. In the dovecot.conf and on http://wiki.dovecot.org/MainConfig I see "Number of login processes to create. If login_process_per_user is yes, this is the number of extra processes waiting for users to log in." but as a config option I only see "login_process_per_connection = yes" Has "login_process_per_user" been changed to "login_process_per_connection = yes"? I'm setting up a new server. I have a couple of dozen users, and several domains. I've set up Postfix as my MTA, and it's dropping things into maildirs. Now I want to get Dovecot to work for POP/IMAP. (Getting SMTP AUTH to work is also on the agenda, but slightly tangential.) Postfix is putting things into /var/mail/vhosts, an example line in my vmailbox file is: test(a)callas.org callas.org/test/ Dovecot is installed via darwinports. (Oh, yeah, this server is an Intel dual-core Mac Mini running OS X 10.4 -- *not* OSX Server.) So I need to figure out how to get dovecot to authenticate in my users. From reading <http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualUsers> and <http:// wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication> it will be easiest for me to set up a passwd-file authentication. So I would make some file somewhere in passwd-file format. As an example, I might set up "test(a)callas.org" as: test@callas.org:{plain}pass:1000:1000:Test User:<I think no home dir is needed>::mail=maildir:/var/mail/vhosts/callas.org/test/ Is this reasonable? Hi, All, I've been happy user of dovocot as far. It is easy to configure, reliable and secure. Hat off to all developers who make this possible! I know dovecot is on the mailbox format front, it supports both mbox and maildir format well, and is developing and experimenting a new flexible format, dbox. But is there any plan to add mbx (i.e., indexed mbox format) support, to complete the set? There is some circumstance that mbox format is chosen over the mordern maildir format, For example in our situation, we receive many, many small messages and it would be expensive to create so many files with maildir. And we do a lot of searching - again a single mbox is faster in searching. Now the problem is, we have to use the tranditional mbox format with dovecot, as it does not support indexed mbox format, which makes deleting messages costly. Also the long-time file locking (due to the slow operation on the dovecot side) causes our MTA (exim, by the way) holds a huge queue. That drives up the system load to mad (load average above 500 is not unusual in our case). If dovecot support index mbox format, we be in the havean! But is there a plan to add this support in the near future? Thanks, JY

Dovecot beta 5 + dovecot lda, solaris 9 sparc. Dovecot seems to use a lot of memory with large Maildir folders, ( 300-500 mb folder - 100-200 mb process), something I never noticed with similarly large mboxes. Is that expected behavior or are my observations incorrect.

I've just installed Dovecot and am running into a bit of a problem with it. I'm using virtual email accounts and everything seems to be working up to a certain point. Let me break down how the server is setup. Each domain belongs under the directory /mail so it's path is basically: /mail/domain.tld. Within each domain directory there are two sub-directories etc and mail. Under /mail/domain.tld/etc I have two files setup aliases and passwd, the aliases file handles all mail aliasing for that domain and the passwd file holds the users account name and password. The password file has the accounts stored in the following format: user@domain.tld:(encrypted password):500:500:Virtual User:/mail/domain.tld/mail/user:/dev/null The password enctryption is basically htpasswd() style encryption. Now the problem I'm having is I keep getting authentication errors when I try to login via POP3 (I'm testing via command line so I do `telnet localhost 110`). They insist I use UW IMAP but I can't get it to work with the vitrtual users like the previous guy did. I've used Dovecot before but it's been two years and I can't remember how I got everything working before. They want things back to normal by Monday morning (tomorrow) so now I'm a bit stressed since I've lost most my weekend rebuilding the server and users. Any help would be appreciated. I thought I had this setup just right but I just can't get passed it telling me the user doesn't exsist.

Hi list, I have installed dovecot on fedora4 and I migrated courier-imap to dovecot with instructions given on the site. everthing works fine for thunderbird, horde, evolution and mail/macosx.. but i have some pbs with pine because it doesnt read .subscriptions and directories aren't seen as it should be seen like in the .subscription. maybe i should reconfigure the .pinerc correctly, but what should I put in place then? does anyone have a .pinerc template that reads like other mail browsers with dovecot? [Dovecot] Solved problem with index corruption (new mail not seen)

Having had many problems in the past with IDLE not working, new messages not being seen from Thunderbird, and sometimes garbage seen as part of mailboxes, I eventually added some workaround/sanity check patch to the imap_sync_deinit code to reread the offsets from the index and that solved the problem. Now with beta7 (I've previously used beta2), this seems not to be necessary anymore. I installed vanilla beta7 and couldn't reproduce the problem in any way! I'm not sure what has changed there, and haven't yet checked if I see anything relevant, so this is just to let you know, and ask - any idea which change could have caused this. Happily I will soon be going on with working around other issues I have here, and start bugging you in the list again. Hi. I've just compiled and installed 1.0beta7 on MacOSX 10.4.6. I have lost the battle with PAM authentication. When I connect to the IMAP server and provide the correct user name and password, the mail client is told authentication failed. I am in the throes of trying to understand all the issues of transforming an old UW Imap server with mbox (I think) INBOX format running sendmail and procmail serving 3500 users to dovecot and maildir format. Currently, the folders are under ~/mail and the INBOXes are under /var/spool/mail. If I understand correctly, the typical default Dovecot/maildir format installation will have both the INBOX and folders (prefixed with a period), so they take the format: .<foldername>) under ~/Maildir. Right? I am planning to do a gradual phaseover of one chunk of ids at a time........ "I am in a maze of twisty tunnels, all alike. A dwarf runs by........" Some questions: 1) In the UW IMap docs, formats.txt discusses a bunch of different mailbox formats. Hello, I have RHEL v4 Linux. I have always been using exim with teapop (po3 client) for my emails. I would like to try dovecot (imap) because I would like to implement squirrelmail. I'm hosting several domains with email each on different IP. I have the some user names in different domains with my pop3 teapop. Can I have it with dovecot. I managed to configure exim to deliver messages for localuser to Maildir directory. directory = /var/spool/mail/${local_part}/Maildir and for virtual_users to Maildir directory. directory = /var/spool/mail/${domain}/${local_part}/Maildir This is working. Email are delivered. But I cannot to connect with my Outlook Express to imap server and download them. I cannot see how dovecot would differentiate between users with the some named in different domains. I believe that me configurations is not right. I would like for starters to have real user to be checked (like in teapop) against /etc/password /etc/shadow file, and virtual user against /etc/mail/passwd.domain file which would contain login:passwd pairs. Do I need like with teapop different IP for every domain ? How do I do that? Any advice would be appreciated. All, I'm trying to teach dovecot to use the mbox format for /var/mail/%u and maildir for /home/%u/Mail/ but I'm having quite a hard time. This is Dovecot v1.0.beta3 under OpenBSD 3.9 on sparc64. I've been fiddling with default_mail_env and also tried separate namespaces, but all to no avail. Here's some of the things I tried : default_mail_env = maildir:/home/%u/Maildir:INBOX=mbox:/var/mail/%u ... default_mail_env = INBOX=mbox:/var/mail/%u:MAIL=maildir:/home/%u/Maildir/ ... namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes location = mbox:/var/mail/%u } namespace private { separator = / prefix = "Folders/" location = maildir:/home/%u/Mail } ... But all it does is complain that my mbox files dont have a cur/ directory in them or create mbox-type files in /home/%u/mail/, in stead of saving my mail in a maildir under /home/%u/Mail/. So using namespaces doesn't seem to be such a good idea after all, I can have extra maildirs under Folders/ in ~/Mail, but that's not where my IMAP client saves its sent mail. I'm quite obviously doing something wrong, is this possible at all ? What is the correct incantation for the default_mail_env setting for such a setup ? [Dovecot] multiple domains for the same user

I have postfix and dovecot set up to use virtual domains. I am now experiencing a problem that when I log in as user1(a)domain1.tld and then log in as user1(a)domain2.tld all the emails are downloaded for user1(a)domain2.tld as it thinks all the messages are new. is there anyway to stop dovecot from saying that all the messages are new?

[Dovecot] dovecot.rawlog for imap-login

I'm trying to see what users are sending for login. I added the rawlog binary in front of the imap-login in the config file. I'm not seeing any rawlogs. I added the dovecot.rawlog in the dovecot user directory (since that's what the imap-login process seems to run as) and it's permission are wide open. Still nothing. Help?

[Dovecot] Very Complex Master Password Challenge

This might require adding some new code to Dovecot to pull this off. But it would be extremely powerful if I could get this to work. Here's the situation. Having a master password is great for helping users and doing tech support. But - suppose I'm hosting many domains and I want to create master passwords for each domain separately so that the owners of the domain can log in as any user within that domain? Here's the way I have things set up. I have a directory of passwd/shadow pairs for each domain as follows: /etc/vmail/passwd.domain1.com /etc/vmail/shadow.domain1.com /etc/vmail/passwd.domain2.com /etc/vmail/shadow.domain2.com Additionally I have a master domain used for management of the other domains. The master domain is an email account for each domain under the domain junkemailfilter.net. domain1.com(a)junkemailfilter.net domain2.com(a)junkemailfilter.net The password and shadow files are like the others: /etc/vmail/passwd.junkemailfilter.net /etc/vmail/shadow.junkemailfilter.net So - the idea is that the owners of the domain have access to the email accounts on junkemailfilter.net and what I'm hoping to do is that they can use this as the master password for their domain only. Example: domain1.com(a)junkemailfilter.net domain2.com(a)junkemailfilter.net I suppose that the master password feature needs another new feature to limit the scope of what it is allowed to be a master password for. Something perhaps like: passdb passwd-file { # Path for passwd-file args = /etc/vmail/shadow.junkemailfilter.net master = yes scope = *@%u } In the above example "%u" is the user part of the master password. So that that master user would be for example "domain1.com(a)junkemailfilter.net" and it would be the master password only for users of domain1.com and not domain2.com. So - if you can follow this - then you will see that this would be a really cool feature to have. And - I'm guessing that it might be easy to implement.

Hi all. I got my previous problem fixed. Effective uid and gid fix in dovecot.conf file made it work. However, I'm still seeing this in my /var/log/dovecot.conf dovecot: 2006-04-13 21:09:00 Info: imap(chl(a)iaminla.com): Effective uid=1000, gid=1000 The uid and gid *should* both be 1009, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to configure that. I looked around the list and couldn't find the answer. Help a noob out please? Hi Still running 1.0 stable (an old release i know but until i see more stable reports on beta7 i will hold out). last night is the first time in months the dovecot has died. maillog has repeated lines of this. Apr 16 02:31:37 proteus2 dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files dovecot.log just shows last login Apr 16 02:31:36 Info: pop3-login: Login: username [IP] i restarted it Apr 16 08:38:04 Info: Dovecot v1.0-stable starting up and now it seems ok. anyone got a monitor script for watching the dovecot daemon and send a start if it dies? [Dovecot] hard link between courierimapuiddb and dovecot-uidlist?

Hi, guys. I'm attempting to transition between Courier IMAP and Dovecot. I may not be able to transition all the courierimapuiddb files instantly or even transition all my servers at the same time. Ideally, it wouldn't matter. Users can login and get to a Courier IMAP machine or a Dovecot machine and read their email (all mounted via NFS). My question is: is there any reason I can't just do a hard link between courierimapuiddb and dovecot-uidlist? That way, I can transition users over to Dovecot at my leisure. And, if I need to, I can move back to Courier. The hard link is essentially free and lets me make sure these files stay synced. Thanks Jeff
