Rich, We're also in the process of setting up a GFS/Cluster with CentOS. I'm hopeful this will eliminate some of the issues. I'll keep everyone posted. Steve > Hi Steve, > > We'll give that a try. [Dovecot] FreeBSD 6 - DirectAdmin - dovecot
by Floris van den Berg 02 May '06

02 May '06

Since version 1.0 I experience strange problems with dovecot. At the moment I have beta 7 installed. I use FreeBSD 6.0. * Pop3 works * Imap works, but only when i telnet to localhost * In all other cases I can't connect to the server. Tried with squirrelmail, uebimau and thunderbird. Squirrelmail after a long time waiting: "ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server." Happens too with firewall switched off. Happens too when i restart exim and dovecot. /var/log/maillog mentions something about Inactivity. When i do tail -f /var/log/maillog and try to connect using squirrel, i see hardly any imap messages fly by, except 'inactivity'. Any ideas? Floris

[Dovecot] mail messages moving between mailfolders
by taras＠elantech.ru 02 May '06

02 May '06

Hello to all! I'm using IMAP-based antispam self-learning. I have a folder "spam" in each Maildir in which I place spam-tagged messages during delivery. If antispam filter makes mistake, user can drag'n'drop message to/from "spam" folder. I running perl-script periodicaly and retrain spam-filter (dSpam). Now I must scan all messages, but it's not a good practice (server load depends from mail volume, not user activity) so I want add a "hook" to IMAP-server, i.e. I want server to report me something like "date: file1 -> file2" via any IPC (socket?) or log file while user moves messages across different mail folders. Overload from antispam retraining will be function from user activity with such feature added. P.S.: Now I'm using courier, but want to try dovecot. Sorry for bad English. [Dovecot] fedora core 4 + mysql 5 + dovecot
by dave 02 May '06

02 May '06

hi all just a quick question i have dovecot (0.99.14 yum install) running on my fc4 server to get this working, i had to downgrade from mysql 5 to fedora's mysql rpm's i really would prefer to use mysql 5, but to satisfy the dependencies, i had to go to mysql 4 now, i just want to know if there is an rpm (linux rather than specific fc4 version is fine) out there for dovecot, that i can use with mysql 5 definitely prefer rpm's to src as i don't really like getting into the nitty gritty of config/setup thanks dave -- http://dtracorp.com

[Dovecot] Dovecot-1.0.beta7 Build Fedora 3 Error
by Luke Jackson 02 May '06

Hello I'm attempting to configure Dovecot with mysql support so I'm able to have a single database of users and point both postfix and dovecot to this db. I currently have an rpm src that I have download and placed in my RPMBUILDROOT of my linux box. Next I configured the .spec file and attempted to run a rpmbuild -bb Near the end of the install phase I receive an error which has me stumped. I ran rpmbuild again and used the -bi --short-circuit options and logged the output for you to see. Any help would be greatly appreciated..... rpmbuild -bi --short-circuit dovecot-fc5.spec Executing(%install): /bin/sh -e /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.44599 Making install in src make[1]: Entering directory Hi, folks! How to notify dovecot that maildir contents is changed by third-party helper? My script performs spam cleanup, but all index/cache files (dovecot-uidlist, dovecot.index, dovecot.index.cache and dovecot.index.log) still unchanged, so, Web-frontend (IlohaMail over IMAP) displays taht mailbox contents isn't refreshed. [Dovecot] Documentation for ACL support
by Michael Renner 02 May '06

Hi, the changelog of beta4 suggested that ACL support was added but I couldn't find any documentation for it neither in the tarball nor in the wiki. Timo, do you already have some writeups regarding the ACLs or do I have to RTFS? best regards, Michael

[Dovecot] Dovecot LDA troubles (input in flex scanner failed)
by Mark Moses 02 May '06

02 May '06

Hi all, I'm running fedora core 5 with postfix 2.2.8 (modified rpm version) and dovecot 1.0 beta7 and dovecot-lda nighly cvs snapshot from 14-04-2006 I might need to add that amavisd-new is configured as a content-filter. I have postfix running using virtual users in an mysql database and I have setup dovecot lda in postfix like the wiki says here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA#head-dacb9b9a1f19c3ea86bb6f8caa3d64e3ddad9ef8 When I sent an email using this setup I get the following error in my maillog: May 1 20:41:29 calimero postfix/pipe[15760]: 8337934FABB: to=< mark(a)mydomain.com>, relay=dovecot, delay=0, status=bounced (Command died with status 2: "/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver". Command output: input in flex scanner failed ) I really don't know if this is a configuration problem or a bug and how I can get more information about the error note: I haven't included config-files, but if they are needed I will provide those of course Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Sincerely, Mark

[Dovecot] Re: fedora core 4 + mysql 5 + dovecot
by Roger Weeks 01 May '06

Building a newer version of Dovecot on Fedora is dead simple: ./configure --with-mysql make make install And you absolutely DO NOT want to run Dovecot with MySQL authentication using the 0.99 builds. There are many many bugs. Go get yourself the latest 1.0 beta version instead. -- Roger J. [Dovecot] FreeBSD 6 - DirectAdmin - dovecot
by Floris van den Berg 29 Apr '06

Any ideas? Floris

[Dovecot] Question - where's the mail?
by Bob Gustafson 29 Apr '06

29 Apr '06

I am running dovecot and dovecot-lda. Mail is delivered from my ISP via cron script using fetchmail. Over the last few days, there has been a selinux problem which gave permission denied problems whenever deliver would try to store mail in Maildir. I have a big blank spot in my incoming email from about Wed evening (when the latest FC5 upgrade (..) was installed to a few hours ago when I recognized that I may have a problem. Question: What does dovecot deliver do with a message that it cannot store due to permission problems?

I'm running beta7 on two machines, with maildir on NFS. I have lockd running on all machines. [Dovecot] imaptest, with options!
by Jens Laas 28 Apr '06

I hacked some command line options into imaptest. I dont think I broke it.. Place into dovecot-source root as usual and compile with: gcc imaptest.c -o imaptest -Wall -W -I. -Isrc/lib -DHAVE_CONFIG_H src/lib/liblib.a As per Timo's instructions. # imaptest -h imaptest [USER@IP:PORTNO] [pass=PASSWORD] [mbox=MBOX] [clients=CC] [msgs=NMSG] [use_authenticate] [PORTNO] USER = template for username. "u%04d" will generate users "u0001" to "u0100" MBOX = path to mbox from which we read mails to append. CC = number of concurrent clients. [20] NMSG = target number of messages in INBOX. [100] If use_authenticate is given AUTHENTICATE will be used instead of LOGIN. Have fun! [Dovecot] setuid(5000) failed: Resource temporarily unavailable
by Jon Baker 27 Apr '06

27 Apr '06

I have combed google for days searching for an answer to this but cannot find anything anywhere, I'm hoping that posting to this list will get me the solution. I have FC4 running dovecot v1.0.beta7 to serve my POP3 (I had to install v1.0.beta7 because it's on a x86_64 and I need mysql support). It runs great for about two hours, after which I start getting the resource temporarily unavailable error. I can't get the error to go away by restarting dovecot, the only way I can figure out to do it is to restart the box. This is terribly annoying... please help! Thanks!

[Dovecot] being courier_imap compatible
by Chad Leigh -- Shire.Net LLC 26 Apr '06

26 Apr '06

OK, I am running (for many years now) an existing courier_imap maildir ++ setup with exim as the MTA. Has been fine. I have my own custom ldap schema for user account definition and authorization. I installed dovecot 1.0 beta 7 as a test and have it listening on a different port. I would like, if possible, to set things up so that a user could use either dovecot or courier. Having to re-subscribe to folders is OK when moving to dovecot. (It would be nice to be able to make a symbolic link from courier's subscription file to the dovecot one though) (My client for testing is the Mac OS X (10.4.6) Mail client Mail.app -- it seems to do an auto subscribe to folders) I set up a namespace for dovecot, using the wiki as a guide, so: namespace private { # Hierarchy separator to use. You should use the same separator for all # namespaces or some clients get confused. '/' is usually a good one. separator = . # Prefix required to access this namespace. This needs to be different for # all namespaces. For example "Public/". prefix = INBOX. # Physical location of the mailbox. This is in same format as # default_mail_env, which is also the default for it. location = . # There can be only one INBOX, and this setting defines which namespace # has it. inbox = yes # If namespace is hidden, it's not advertised to clients via NAMESPACE # extension or shown in LIST replies. This is mostly useful when converting # from another server with different namespaces which you want to depricate # but still keep working. For example you can create hidden namespaces with hidden=no } (location has to be . or something similar since my ldap schema is purely virtual users and returns the actual root of the maildir) I am able to get the root mailbox (INBOX) to work. I can see new mail and look at mail messages etc. I create a new account in Mail.app that logs in to an existing account (to make sure there is no client cached info involved). It logs in and is able to see the imap folders that exist for this account. However, clicking on the folder does not show any messages at all. dovecot is not creating a subscription file inside the maildir (Mail.app does not allow you to subscribe to folders -- it subscribes to all existing folders for you) And if I try and create a new folder inside the account I get a "CREATE" command failed, server error: unknown namespace How can I get the folders to work with dovecot using my existing maildir++ setup? [Dovecot] ldap and user_filter
by Chad Leigh -- Shire.Net LLC 26 Apr '06

26 Apr '06

I have my own custom schema for email that I have been using for years with courier_imap and exim. I am experimenting with dovecot and trying to set up my conf so that it logs in using the ldap database. In the dovecot-ldap.conf there is a section # Filter for user lookup. Some variables can be used (see # http://wiki.dovecot.org/Variables for full list): # %u - username # %n - user part in user@domain, same as %u if there's no domain # %d - domain part in user@domain, empty if user there's no domain #user_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=%u)) In order to match my scheme I changed it to user_filter = (&(objectClass=shireNetEmailaccount) (shireNetEmailAddress=%u)) This should match my courier setup of ##NAME: LDAP_MAIL:0 # # Here's the field on which we query #LDAP_MAIL mail LDAP_MAIL shireNetEmailAddress --- Anyway, it appears from the logs that my user_filter is being ignored as I get the following in the log dovecot: Apr 26 11:24:35 Info: auth(default): ldap(chad(a)rkba.com, 67.171.127.191): base=dc=shire, dc=net scope=subtree filter=(& (objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=chad(a)rkba.com)) fields=shireNetUserPassword which shows the original default user_filter What do I need to do to have it use the one I give in the dovecat- ldap.conf and not the default? The dovecot-ldap.conf is being used as it is going against my ldap server thanks Chad --- Chad Leigh -- Shire.Net LLC Your Web App and Email hosting provider chad at shire.net

[Dovecot] problems getting dovecot-LDA to work
by Alan Premselaar 26 Apr '06

26 Apr '06

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I've setup a test machine and have been playing with dovecot-1.0beta7 and dovecot-lda in preparation for a migration from 0.99.x series. (hopefully with the ability to support imap-quotas) anyways, i've got it all compiled fine (as far as I can tell) and following the directions on the wiki for setting up dovecot LDA with sendmail. (I've had to alter the configuration a bit since using the mailertable didn't work with my actual hostname). when I try to use /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver via sendmail, i get a EX_TEMPFAIL. I logged into the machine as the user I'm trying to deliver mail for and do the following: /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d alan and get the following error: deliver: Error: Ambiguous mail location setting, don't know what to do with it: /var/spool/mail/alan (try prefixing it with mbox: or maildir:) deliver: Fatal: Failed to create storage for 'alan' with mail '/var/spool/mail/alan' in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf I have the following: protocol lda { postmaster_address = postmaster(a)pluto.valueclick.ne.jp auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master location = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/indexes/%u } I tried setting the default_mail_env with the same settings but got the same results (i did a complete restart of the dovecot services) I've even specified the config file with: /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -c /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf -d alan with the same results. [Dovecot] Public Shares, Groups and Undeletable Sent E-mails?
by Gavin Henry 26 Apr '06

26 Apr '06

Dear all, We would like to setup, if possible, for example: We have 4 example groups, we various users in those groups: Directors director1,director2 Support manager1,support1,support2,support3 Enquiries manager2,enquiry1,enquiry2,enquiry3 Accounts manager3, accounts1,account2 Shared Mailboxes: Support: Support, user1, user2, user3 Accounts: Directors, Support So basically, we want 2 public folder shares, with the names: Support Accounts Everyone in the Support group and user1-3 should be able to subscribe to the "Support" share. Everyone in the Directors and Support groups should be able to subscribe to the Accounts shares (only an example ;-) ). We also need to set it up that the Managers have visible in the available shares, all the employees that they look after. No private e-mail allowed. Symlinks for this? Is this possible? We already have the subscribtion file and index files saved in their own homedirs. Not sure how to even think about dovecot-shared file and symlinks etc? Lastly, can it be set so a user can't delete their sent e-mails? chattr -i on Sent folder, of ACL in Dovecot? Here's hoping this is all possible ;-) Thanks, Gavin. -- Kind Regards, Gavin Henry. Hi All Just trying to config dovecot and I'm guessing there's been a change in the app. In the dovecot.conf and on http://wiki.dovecot.org/MainConfig I see "Number of login processes to create. If login_process_per_user is yes, this is the number of extra processes waiting for users to log in." but as a config option I only see "login_process_per_connection = yes" Has "login_process_per_user" been changed to "login_process_per_connection = yes"? [Dovecot] Sanity checking on dovecot
by Jon Callas 26 Apr '06

26 Apr '06

I'm setting up a new server. I have a couple of dozen users, and several domains. I've set up Postfix as my MTA, and it's dropping things into maildirs. Now I want to get Dovecot to work for POP/IMAP. (Getting SMTP AUTH to work is also on the agenda, but slightly tangential.) Postfix is putting things into /var/mail/vhosts, an example line in my vmailbox file is: test(a)callas.org callas.org/test/ Dovecot is installed via darwinports. (Oh, yeah, this server is an Intel dual-core Mac Mini running OS X 10.4 -- *not* OSX Server.) So I need to figure out how to get dovecot to authenticate in my users. From reading <http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualUsers> and <http:// wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication> it will be easiest for me to set up a passwd-file authentication. So I would make some file somewhere in passwd-file format. As an example, I might set up "test(a)callas.org" as: test@callas.org:{plain}pass:1000:1000:Test User:<I think no home dir is needed>::mail=maildir:/var/mail/vhosts/callas.org/test/ Is this reasonable? Is there something easier that I'm missing? Jon

[Dovecot] Plan/Status of MBX support?
by Jiaying Xu 25 Apr '06

25 Apr '06

Hi, All, I've been happy user of dovocot as far. It is easy to configure, reliable and secure. Hat off to all developers who make this possible! I know dovecot is on the mailbox format front, it supports both mbox and maildir format well, and is developing and experimenting a new flexible format, dbox. But is there any plan to add mbx (i.e., indexed mbox format) support, to complete the set? There is some circumstance that mbox format is chosen over the mordern maildir format, For example in our situation, we receive many, many small messages and it would be expensive to create so many files with maildir. And we do a lot of searching - again a single mbox is faster in searching. Now the problem is, we have to use the tranditional mbox format with dovecot, as it does not support indexed mbox format, which makes deleting messages costly. Also the long-time file locking (due to the slow operation on the dovecot side) causes our MTA (exim, by the way) holds a huge queue. That drives up the system load to mad (load average above 500 is not unusual in our case). If dovecot support index mbox format, we be in the havean! But is there a plan to add this support in the near future? Thanks, JY

[Dovecot] Test migration (IMAP copy) and INTERNALDATE?
by Apps Lists 25 Apr '06

25 Apr '06

We're trying some migration tests ... from CommuniGate to Dovecot. The migration program does an APPEND into the new mailbox: src>: a0 FETCH 2900 (FLAGS INTERNALDATE RFC822.PEEK) src<: * 2900 FETCH (FLAGS (\Seen) INTERNALDATE "29-Aug-2005 18:36:54 +0000" RFC822 {1194157} src<: ) dst>: bAPP APPEND "INBOX" (\Seen) "29-Aug-2005 18:36:54 +0000" {1194157} dst<: + OK It appears to be trying to set the message date... in this example, to 29 Aug 2005. Dovecot seems to be ignoring it. Am I doing something wrong, or does Dovecot not allow this? Steve

[Dovecot] Dovecot LDA with sendmail/Mailscanner
by Gerhard Wiesinger 24 Apr '06

24 Apr '06

Hello! I'm running dovecot in a sendmail/Mailscanner/procmail/mbox environment. I want to use dovecot lda because index files aren't updated when using sendmail as lda. Has someone this combination running and some configuration hints so that sendmail, Mailscanner and procmail ist working well. Does procmail work with lda, too? Thank you for the answer. Ciao, Gerhard

[Dovecot] maildir memory usage
by lenny＠edpausa.com 24 Apr '06

24 Apr '06

Dovecot beta 5 + dovecot lda, solaris 9 sparc. Dovecot seems to use a lot of memory with large Maildir folders, ( 300-500 mb folder - 100-200 mb process), something I never noticed with similarly large mboxes. Is that expected behavior or are my observations incorrect.

[Dovecot] Just setup Dovecot and having a small problem.
by Tom Ray 24 Apr '06

24 Apr '06

I've just installed Dovecot and am running into a bit of a problem with it. I'm using virtual email accounts and everything seems to be working up to a certain point. Let me break down how the server is setup. Each domain belongs under the directory /mail so it's path is basically: /mail/domain.tld. Within each domain directory there are two sub-directories etc and mail. Under /mail/domain.tld/etc I have two files setup aliases and passwd, the aliases file handles all mail aliasing for that domain and the passwd file holds the users account name and password. The password file has the accounts stored in the following format: user@domain.tld:(encrypted password):500:500:Virtual User:/mail/domain.tld/mail/user:/dev/null The password enctryption is basically htpasswd() style encryption. Now the problem I'm having is I keep getting authentication errors when I try to login via POP3 (I'm testing via command line so I do `telnet localhost 110`). At first I had only auth_debug_passwords=yes set and I was seeing this in the log file: Apr 23 18:54:19 www dovecot: auth(default): client in: AUTH^I1^IPLAIN^Iservice=POP3^Isecured^Ilip= 127.0.0.1^Irip=127.0.0.1^Iresp=AHRvbUBkZXRyb2l0b25saW5lLmNvbQBuZXdiZXJn Apr 23 18:54:19 www dovecot: auth(default): pam(user(a)domain.tld,127.0.0.1): pam_authenticate() failed: Authentication failure Apr 23 18:54:19 www dovecot: auth(default): passwd-file /mail/domain.tld/etc/passwd: Read 1 users Apr 23 18:54:19 www dovecot: auth(default): passwd-file(user(a)domain.tld, 127.0.0.1): unknown user Apr 23 18:54:20 www dovecot: auth(default): client out: FAIL^I1^Iuser= user(a)domain.tld So I can see it's reading the proper password file but it claims that user doesn't exist, however, that user does exist. When I turn on auth_verbose=yes and I'm still seeing the same errors in the log file. Can someone tell me what I'm missing here? I'm really on a time crunch with this, our mail server died friday morning and it's been put on me to fix it. They insist I use UW IMAP but I can't get it to work with the vitrtual users like the previous guy did. I've used Dovecot before but it's been two years and I can't remember how I got everything working before. They want things back to normal by Monday morning (tomorrow) so now I'm a bit stressed since I've lost most my weekend rebuilding the server and users. Any help would be appreciated. I thought I had this setup just right but I just can't get passed it telling me the user doesn't exsist.

Hi list, I have installed dovecot on fedora4 and I migrated courier-imap to dovecot with instructions given on the site. everthing works fine for thunderbird, horde, evolution and mail/macosx.. but i have some pbs with pine because it doesnt read .subscriptions and directories aren't seen as it should be seen like in the .subscription. maybe i should reconfigure the .pinerc correctly, but what should I put in place then? does anyone have a .pinerc template that reads like other mail browsers with dovecot? Thanks in advance Cheers. Richard

[Dovecot] Solved problem with index corruption (new mail not seen)
by Tom Alsberg 24 Apr '06

24 Apr '06

Having had many problems in the past with IDLE not working, new messages not being seen from Thunderbird, and sometimes garbage seen as part of mailboxes, I eventually added some workaround/sanity check patch to the imap_sync_deinit code to reread the offsets from the index and that solved the problem. Now with beta7 (I've previously used beta2), this seems not to be necessary anymore. I installed vanilla beta7 and couldn't reproduce the problem in any way! I'm not sure what has changed there, and haven't yet checked if I see anything relevant, so this is just to let you know, and ask - any idea which change could have caused this. Happily I will soon be going on with working around other issues I have here, and start bugging you in the list again. [Dovecot] Bug: quota-maildir.c, array accessed out of bounds
by Bill Boebel 22 Apr '06

22 Apr '06

Timo, In src/plugins/quota/quota-maildir.c, in the maildirsize_read() function, if the maildirsize file is greater that 5120 bytes, this code breaks because the while loop executes multiple times, incrementing size to a value larger than 5120, and then size is later used to referece the buf array out of bounds. To fix it you could add a break statement after "size+= ret;" so that the while loop is always only executed once: char buf[5120+1]; ... size = 0; while ((ret = read(fd, buf, sizeof(buf)-1)) != 0) { if (ret < 0) { if (errno == ESTALE) break; mail_storage_set_critical(storage, "read(%s) failed: %m", path); } size += ret; } if (ret < 0 || size == sizeof(buf)-1) { /* error / recalculation needed. */ (void)close(fd); t_pop(); return ret < 0 ? -1 : 0; } /* file is smaller than 5120 bytes, which means we can use it */ root->total_bytes = root->total_count = 0; /* skip the last line if there's no LF at the end */ while (size > 0 && buf[size-1] != '\n') size--; buf[size] = '\0';

[Dovecot] PAM authentication woes with MacOSX
by Jim Reid 22 Apr '06

22 Apr '06

Hi. I've just compiled and installed 1.0beta7 on MacOSX 10.4.6. I have lost the battle with PAM authentication. When I connect to the IMAP server and provide the correct user name and password, the mail client is told authentication failed. Here's what's in the log: Apr 21 22:47:43 shaun dovecot: auth(default): client in: AUTH 2 PLAIN service=IMAP secured lip=195.54.233.68 rip=195.54.233.69 resp=AGppbQB1bmxpbmsoLik= Apr 21 22:47:43 shaun dovecot: auth(default): pam(jim,195.54.233.69): pam_authenticate() failed: Authentication failure Apr 21 22:47:45 shaun dovecot: auth(default): client out: FAIL 2 user=jim Apr 21 22:47:53 shaun dovecot: auth(default): client in: AUTH 3 PLAIN service=IMAP secured lip=195.54.233.68 rip=195.54.233.69 resp=AGppbQB1bmxpbmsoLik= Apr 21 22:47:53 shaun dovecot: auth(default): pam(jim,195.54.233.69): pam_authenticate() failed: Authentication failure Apr 21 22:47:53 shaun dovecot: auth(default): client out: FAIL 3 user=jim Apr 21 22:47:55 shaun dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login: user=<jim>, method=PLAIN, rip=195.54.233.69, lip=195.54.233.68, TLS After some googling, I found a posting from this list that claimed the following PAM setup would work for MacOSX: # dovecote: auth account password session auth required pam_nologin.so auth sufficient pam_securityserver.so auth sufficient pam_unix.so auth required pam_deny.so account required pam_permit.so password required pam_deny.so session required pam_uwtmp.so It didn't. :-( If it had, I wouldn't be posting this. :-) BTW, that posting said the wiki entry for PAM didn't work on MacOSX. Which is true. I tried that unsuccessfully too. Can anyone shed any light on what's been misconfigured or how to turn on enough debugging to show where I'm going wrong? Thanks. BTW, here's what I think is the relevant bit of dovecote.conf: auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb pam { args = dovecot } userdb passwd { } user = root }

[Dovecot] Question about mail storage
by Stewart Dean 21 Apr '06

21 Apr '06

I am in the throes of trying to understand all the issues of transforming an old UW Imap server with mbox (I think) INBOX format running sendmail and procmail serving 3500 users to dovecot and maildir format. Currently, the folders are under ~/mail and the INBOXes are under /var/spool/mail. If I understand correctly, the typical default Dovecot/maildir format installation will have both the INBOX and folders (prefixed with a period), so they take the format: .<foldername>) under ~/Maildir. Right? I am planning to do a gradual phaseover of one chunk of ids at a time........ "I am in a maze of twisty tunnels, all alike. A dwarf runs by........" Some questions: 1) In the UW IMap docs, formats.txt discusses a bunch of different mailbox formats. I am unclear as to whether I currently have what Crispin describes at .unix format or .mbx format. > . unix This is the traditional UNIX mailbox format, in use for nearly > 30 years. It uses a line starting with "From " to indicate > start of message, and stores the message status inside the > RFC822 message header. > > unix is not particularly efficient; the entire mailbox file > must be read when the mailbox is open, and when reading message > texts it is necessary to convert the newline convention to > Internet standard CR LF form. unix preserves UIDs, and allows > the creation of keywords. > > Only one process may have a unix-format mailbox open > read/write at a time. > and ... > . mbx This is the current preferred mailbox format. It can be > handled quite efficiently by c-client, without the problems > that exist with unix and mmdf formats. Messages are stored > in Internet standard CR LF format. > > mbx permits shared access, including shared expunge. It > preserves UIDs, and allows the creation of keywords. How do I tell them apart? Alternately, how do I tell if what I now have (some sort of one big single-file INBOX) is mbox? Or is what he's referring to as unix just mbox 2) How to change Where Things End Up a) The users' ~/.procmailrc pretty much consists of: MAILDIR=$HOME/mail Am I correct in assuming that this should be changed to: MAILDIR=$HOME/Maildir/ ? b) Mail appears to end up in /var/spool/mail/<username> because that's the procmail default (ORGMAIL). To redirect individual users (because this will be a gradual changeover), am I correct in assuming that putting: DEFAULT=$HOME/Maildir/ in ~/.procmailrc will redirect incoming mail? 3) I see that, in the default configuration, /everything/ will now be under ~/Maildir and thus in the home directories. Is there a reason to get away from a separate INBOX directory (we use /var/spool/mail)? I'd have to rebuild the homedir filesystems to accommodate the INBOX demands. This isn't all that big a deal, I'd like to understand the rationale..or should I just bow to the inevitable? 4) Pardon my stupidity, but how is the Dovecot INBOX under maildir++ organized? a) Is it a separate directory under ~/Maildir (say ~/Maildir/INBOX or some such) that has a separate file for each message or b) are the INBOX messages just mixed in with the folders under ~/Maildir. If so, how are they differentated? Enlighten my ignorance,.please! I've been reading docs today until my brain feels like custard, but I couldn't seem to get clear definitive answers to these questions........ Thanks in advance. -- ==== Stewart Dean, Unix System Admin, Henderson Computer Resources Center of Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York 12504 sdean(a)bard.edu voice: 845-758-7475, fax: 845-758-7035

[Dovecot] How to configure virtual use suport.
by Slawomir Orlowski (Cympak) 21 Apr '06

21 Apr '06

Hello, I have RHEL v4 Linux. I have always been using exim with teapop (po3 client) for my emails. I would like to try dovecot (imap) because I would like to implement squirrelmail. I'm hosting several domains with email each on different IP. I have the some user names in different domains with my pop3 teapop. Can I have it with dovecot. I managed to configure exim to deliver messages for localuser to Maildir directory. directory = /var/spool/mail/${local_part}/Maildir and for virtual_users to Maildir directory. directory = /var/spool/mail/${domain}/${local_part}/Maildir This is working. Email are delivered. But I cannot to connect with my Outlook Express to imap server and download them. I cannot see how dovecot would differentiate between users with the some named in different domains. I believe that me configurations is not right. I would like for starters to have real user to be checked (like in teapop) against /etc/password /etc/shadow file, and virtual user against /etc/mail/passwd.domain file which would contain login:passwd pairs. Do I need like with teapop different IP for every domain ? How do I do that? Any advice would be appreciated. I'm going for a few days vacation I hope that somebody will be able to give me some hints. I have attached my dovecot.conf file. regards Slawomir Orlowski

[Dovecot] INBOX as mbox, other mailboxes as maildir
by Paul de Weerd 21 Apr '06

21 Apr '06

All, I'm trying to teach dovecot to use the mbox format for /var/mail/%u and maildir for /home/%u/Mail/ but I'm having quite a hard time. This is Dovecot v1.0.beta3 under OpenBSD 3.9 on sparc64. I've been fiddling with default_mail_env and also tried separate namespaces, but all to no avail. Here's some of the things I tried : default_mail_env = maildir:/home/%u/Maildir:INBOX=mbox:/var/mail/%u ... default_mail_env = INBOX=mbox:/var/mail/%u:MAIL=maildir:/home/%u/Maildir/ ... namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes location = mbox:/var/mail/%u } namespace private { separator = / prefix = "Folders/" location = maildir:/home/%u/Mail } ... But all it does is complain that my mbox files dont have a cur/ directory in them or create mbox-type files in /home/%u/mail/, in stead of saving my mail in a maildir under /home/%u/Mail/. So using namespaces doesn't seem to be such a good idea after all, I can have extra maildirs under Folders/ in ~/Mail, but that's not where my IMAP client saves its sent mail. I'm quite obviously doing something wrong, is this possible at all ? What is the correct incantation for the default_mail_env setting for such a setup ? Any clues would be greatly appreciated, Cheers, Paul 'WEiRD' de Weerd -- >++++++++[<++++++++++>-]<+++++++.>+++[<------>-]<.>+++[<+ +++++++++++>-]<.>++[<------------>-]<+.--------------.[-] http://www.weirdnet.nl/

[Dovecot] Very Complex Master Password Challenge

This might require adding some new code to Dovecot to pull this off. But it would be extremely powerful if I could get this to work. Here's the situation. Having a master password is great for helping users and doing tech support. But - suppose I'm hosting many domains and I want to create master passwords for each domain separately so that the owners of the domain can log in as any user within that domain? Here's the way I have things set up. I have a directory of passwd/shadow pairs for each domain as follows: /etc/vmail/passwd.domain1.com /etc/vmail/shadow.domain1.com /etc/vmail/passwd.domain2.com /etc/vmail/shadow.domain2.com Additionally I have a master domain used for management of the other domains. The master domain is an email account for each domain under the domain junkemailfilter.net. domain1.com(a)junkemailfilter.net domain2.com(a)junkemailfilter.net The password and shadow files are like the others: /etc/vmail/passwd.junkemailfilter.net /etc/vmail/shadow.junkemailfilter.net So - the idea is that the owners of the domain have access to the email accounts on junkemailfilter.net and what I'm hoping to do is that they can use this as the master password for their domain only. Example: domain1.com(a)junkemailfilter.net domain2.com(a)junkemailfilter.net I suppose that the master password feature needs another new feature to limit the scope of what it is allowed to be a master password for. Something perhaps like: passdb passwd-file { # Path for passwd-file args = /etc/vmail/shadow.junkemailfilter.net master = yes scope = *@%u } In the above example "%u" is the user part of the master password. So that that master user would be for example "domain1.com(a)junkemailfilter.net" and it would be the master password only for users of domain1.com and not domain2.com. So - if you can follow this - then you will see that this would be a really cool feature to have. And - I'm guessing that it might be easy to implement.

[Dovecot] okay, working, but not quite pretty...
by Chris Lea 21 Apr '06

21 Apr '06

Hi all. I got my previous problem fixed. Effective uid and gid fix in dovecot.conf file made it work. However, I'm still seeing this in my /var/log/dovecot.conf dovecot: 2006-04-13 21:09:00 Info: imap(chl(a)iaminla.com): Effective uid=1000, gid=1000 The uid and gid *should* both be 1009, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to configure that. I looked around the list and couldn't find the answer. Help a noob out please? I promise I'll write up a detailed howto for my debian + postfix + dovecot using static userdb's when I have it all working. :) -- --------------------------------------------------------------- "When moderate to highly intelligent people get bored, bad things happen." -- Ann Moreno (310) 709-4021 http://www.chrislea.com ---------------------------------------------------------------

[Dovecot] hard link between courierimapuiddb and dovecot-uidlist?
by Jeff Tucker 21 Apr '06

21 Apr '06

Hi, guys. I'm attempting to transition between Courier IMAP and Dovecot. I may not be able to transition all the courierimapuiddb files instantly or even transition all my servers at the same time. Ideally, it wouldn't matter. Users can login and get to a Courier IMAP machine or a Dovecot machine and read their email (all mounted via NFS). My question is: is there any reason I can't just do a hard link between courierimapuiddb and dovecot-uidlist? That way, I can transition users over to Dovecot at my leisure. And, if I need to, I can move back to Courier. The hard link is essentially free and lets me make sure these files stay synced. Thanks Jeff

[Dovecot] UIDL documentation
by Mark E. Mallett 21 Apr '06

21 Apr '06

Hi, I see this in the 1.0-beta7 dovecot-example.conf file: # If you want UIDL compatibility with other POP3 servers, use: # UW's ipop3d : %08Xv%08Xu # Courier version 0 : %f # Courier version 1 : %u # Courier version 2 : %v-%u # Cyrus (<= 2.1.3) : %u # Cyrus (>= 2.1.4) : %v.%u # Older Dovecots : %v.%u # # Note that Outlook 2003 seems to have problems with %v.%u format which was # Dovecot's default, so if you're building a new server it would be a good # idea to change this. %08Xu%08Xv should be pretty fail-safe. # # NOTE: Nowadays this is required to be set explicitly, since the old # default was bad but it couldn't be changed without breaking existing # installations. %08Xu%08Xv will be the new default, so use it for new # installations. and on the wiki at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration there is this: By default Dovecot generates POP3 UIDs differently than UW-IMAP. If you want to preserve them, with 0.99.x you'll have to patch Dovecot. With 1.0-tests you can use: pop3_uidl_format = %08Xv%08Xu In the dovecot-example.conf file, it appears that the mentions of "%08Xu%08Xv" as being fail-safe and being the new default may be typos, since that format doesn't seem to come from anywhere. Should they not say "%08Xv%08Xu" ? (It'll still provide the same sort of unique value, only with the ends reversed; i.e. it should still work ok. But consistency and compatibility is nice.) mm

[Dovecot] LDA Plugin Maybe?
by Timothy White 19 Apr '06

19 Apr '06

I was just looking into setting up DSPAM, with the Dovecot LDA. Essentially, what I was probably going to do, was use DSPAM as the Delivery agent, after postfix, and then have it pass it off to dovecot, or something along those lines. I just had an idea, if we start using libdspam, in the dspam plugin, or one of the other suggested methods, we could have a similar plugin in the LDA, so that if it's marked as spam, deliver it straight into the Spam folder! Also, with Sieve, can we make it create a folder if the folder doesn't exist, and can it modify the subscriptions file? Thanks Tim -- Linux Counter user #273956

[Dovecot] unofficial Survey about your Dovecot server :) to compare with my own server setup...
by Flavio Domingos 18 Apr '06

18 Apr '06

Hi Borthers/Sisters Thanks for all the developer(s) and for all the hard work spent on build this great piece of software! I loved Dovecot since it is really easy to set up and really fast but I am really new to it (only 2 weeks and half). Right now, our server configuration is: Server: Apple Xserve G5 dual RAM: 4GB Number of Users: ~ 150 IMAP only users Authentication: LDAP Mailboxes sizes: ~200GB Dovecot version: 1.0 Beta 5 (I am looking forward to beta 7 that was released today) Email client software: mostly Thunderbird 1.5 Right now, we are experiencing occasional problem with imap users unable to connect to the server. With beta 3, we had to restart the dovecot/imap processes almost every 3 hours. with Dovecot beta5 we still have to restart the processes but it seems to occur every 3 days (Friday and Yesterday) and only in a peak time (around 3pm). I am waiting to occur it again and I will be able to grab more information about the number of processes, users, virtual memory, etc, etc. So, at this point, I don't have much information to debug the problem. Let's wait. I guess we have here a nice machine (xserve) and not a huge number of users (~150). So, I would expect that our server would handle the load. But having to restart Dovecot once a while, as I described, is not an option (users are getting frustrated). :( Maybe with Beta 7 with the feature "Added shutdown_clients setting to control if existing imap/pop3 processes should be killed when master is" can stop our nightmares :) By the way, our dovecot.conf is basically the default sent with the software. We haven't changed much there! Meanwhile, I'd like to know, if possible, whar are you using to run Dovecot like hardware, OS version, number of users and problems that you are experiencing. I'd like to compare with my setup and if it is the case, migrate to pure Linux or FreeBSD if it is more stable than OS/X! Best Regards, Flavio Domingos - San Francisco/CA -

[Dovecot] Quota again
by Stian Jordet 14 Apr '06

14 Apr '06

Hi, quota is now working well, except that both quota-fs and quota-maildir is showing incorrect values. I have to use this patch to get correct numbers. I _know_ it's totally wrong, and that the cause have to be something else, I just want to know if this is something with my setup, or what? With these changes the values are correct (Indeed the quota-fs is correct, the quota-maildir is at least better...) [Dovecot] dovecot error: unrecognized event
by david williams 14 Apr '06

I'm setting up a new server with dovecot 1.0b7. Whenever I try to connect with a mua (thunderbird or outlook) I get this error in the log: kernel: pid 53279 (pop3), uid 15008: exited on signal 6 Apr 14 10:52:54 dovecot: POP3(williams): Unrecognized event: kevent {.ident = 2, .filter = 0xfffffffe, .flags = 0x0001, .fflags = 0x00000000, .data = 0x00004000} Apr 14 10:52:54 dovecot: child 53279 (pop3) killed with signal 6 The system is freebsd 6 with maildir in nfs mounted home dirs. Any ideas on what the problem is?

[Dovecot] configure option to add QUOTA to IMAP CAPABILITY?
by Apps Lists 14 Apr '06

I'd really like to see a configure option to add "QUOTA" to the CAPABILITY response. I always forget to modify configure and add it manually when compiling new versions. Thanks! Steve

[Dovecot] 1.0.beta6 released
by Timo Sirainen 14 Apr '06

14 Apr '06

Fixes, mostly: * The login and master usernames were reversed when using master_user_separator (now the order is UW-IMAP compatible). * Killing dovecot master process now kills all IMAP and POP3 processes also. + -a parameter to dovecot prints now all settings that Dovecot uses. -n prints all settings that are different from defaults. + Added pop3_lock_session setting + %M modifier returns string's MD5 sum. Patch by Ben Winslow - PLAIN SASL authentication wasn't working properly, causing failed logins with some clients (broken in beta4) - Fixes to Maildir++ quota, should actually work now - Don't crash if passwd-file has entries without passwords (eg. deny=yes databases) - Fixed prefetch userdb to work nicely with other userdbs - If master process runs out of file descriptors, don't go to infinite loop (unlikely to have happened unless the OS's default fd limit was too low) - Fixed non-plaintext password lookups from LDAP. Patch by Lior Okman - %U modifier was actually lowercasing the string. Patch by Ben Winslow

[Dovecot] Re: unofficial Survey about your Dovecot server :) to compare with my own server setup...
by Roger Weeks 14 Apr '06

14 Apr '06

I've posted this to the Wiki as requested. Servers: 2 SuperMicro single-Xeon (dual-capable) 2.8, 1gb RAM, mirrored SATA boot Storage: 1 SuperMicro dual-Zeon 2.8, 2gb RAM, 600GB RAID5 SATA shared via NFS over GigE OS: RHEL 4 Users: 10,000 mostly POP users, SquirrelMail IMAP Auth: MySQL Maildir size: daily averages about 50gb Dovecot version: 1.0 beta 5 Client Software: squirrelmail, outlook, outlook express, thunderbird, eudora, Apple Mail, Claris Emailer, and other odd clients too numerous to mention This system is intentionally over-engineered, to replace the single server Courier-IMAP system that it replaced. Load on each Dovecot/ SquirrelMail server is very low and allows for a lot of growth. Our incoming MTA is Exim, on another pair of SuperMicro machines writing to the same NFS over GigE. -- Roger J. [Dovecot] Feature request for pop3
by Adnae Mac Uthidir 14 Apr '06

14 Apr '06

Dear List, is it possible to integrate a function for timelimits the pop3-connects? I require this function for an email-masshosting-project. My problem is, the most customers will lookup all 30 seconds or 1 minutes for new mails, that is stupid so I mean. My idea is a function where the customer must wait (for example) 3 minutes for a pop3-connect and lookup for new emails. Is it possible? Thx for your help and for the very good software best regards, Sascha

[Dovecot] Compile issues dovecot-1.0.beta7
by Mark E. Mallett 14 Apr '06

14 Apr '06

Hi, I haven't tried compiling 1.0 series since -test52, figured I'd give it a shot. There were a couple of minor problems. This is building on a fairly ancient BSD/OS box, so the issues may not be universal, but I suspect these ones are. ==================== Building in src/lib-dict/dict.c : loading the 'dict' program fails because it can't find various RAND and other functions. Adding -lcrypto fixes. I did this by hand rather than adjusting the configure script; looks like the need for -lcrypto is detected in other cases, but not here. ==================== In src/plugins/quota/quota-fs.c , line 276: #ifdef HAVE_QUOTACTL if (quotactl(QCMD(Q_GETQUOTA, USRQUOTA), root->mount->device_path, root->uid, (void *)&dqblk) < 0) { I believe the first two arguments are backwards, i.e., should be: if (quotactl(root->mount->device_path, QCMD(Q_GETQUOTA, USRQUOTA), root->uid, (void *)&dqblk) < 0) { I have a vague recollection of seeing this already being reported, but can't instantly find it, so what the hey. ==================== Yours, -mm-

Re: [Dovecot] unofficial Survey about your Dovecot server :) to compare with my own server setup...

Server: VA-Linux 2U rackmount Board/CPU: dual PIII 800Mhz Disks: Megaraid R5, 10000rpm disks RAM: 1GB Users: 150 Imap only OS: Debian testing Auth: postgresql Mbx-size: 100MB-2GB (52GB live) Dovecot: 1.0.beta2 Client-SW: OSX Mail (95%), Squirrelmail, Outlook We use exim to authenticate against the same database. Because we have fairly draconian attachment size limits, the 52GB of mail we are serving contains a _lot_ of mail. Dovecot is working extremely well for us at this site, and several other smaller sites all using a combination of OSX Mail and Outlook. [Dovecot] 1.0.beta7
by Timo Sirainen 13 Apr '06

13 Apr '06

Sorry, the authentication problem still wasn't actually fixed in beta6. Now, this time I tested every possible authentication case that it really works. I'll soon create a CVS branch which is going to stabilize into the 1.0 release. I won't add new features there so it shouldn't really get broken anymore, at least because of new features.. So, two changes in this release: + Added shutdown_clients setting to control if existing imap/pop3 processes should be killed when master is. - Master login fixes, PLAIN authentication was still broken..

[Dovecot] problem with out-of-box fedora rpm
by Marc Newman 13 Apr '06

13 Apr '06

Hi Folks, Most of the available howtos suggest that an out of the box binary rpm should at least be able to start on a similarly out of the box Fedora Core 4 installation. However, whenever I run /sbin/service dovecot start I get a failed message. Dovecot was installed using the standard package that ships with FC4 (i386 0.99.14). The only slightly anomalous feature of my system is that wlan0 not eth0 is the primary network interface. This hasn't upset anything else though. I even tried disabling the firewall briefly to see if that had any effect, and it doesn't. So, two questions. Firstly, any ideas on why it might be failing to start? Secondly, where might I look (like, which logs/where) for clues? /var/log/messages doesn't contain any references to dovecot (I grepped it), so I'm out of ideas. My sendmail configuration is working perfectly, and I can send and receive emails fine. But I need pop3 access for some of my users. Just to recap, I haven't even got to the point of testing whether its listening, or configuring authentication. It will not start out of the box. Am I missing some essential configuration step? Marc.

[Dovecot] dspam plugin
by Ryan Kolak 13 Apr '06

13 Apr '06

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hey everyone.. been struggling with building a mailserver and i'm almost done. One of the last pieces is integrating dovecot with dspam so that I'm users can train their spam filters easily (sieve filtering is the last piece left.. that should be interesting.. lol) Anyway, I think i found an issue with memory allocation, and I'm not sure if its due to changes to the code base or if its a 64 bit memory issue. When i try to move a message into or out of the spam folder, it fails, and with debugging on, there are strange entries in the syslog. Added a few more debugging statements, and I get the following showing up: Apr 11 00:04:41 uberserver imap: found signature 443b336a271581061887518 Apr 11 00:04:41 uberserver imap: working with signature (<E4>Z Apr 11 00:04:41 uberserver imap: in call dspam Apr 11 00:04:41 uberserver imap: /usr/bin/dspam --source=error --stdout - --class=spam --signature=(<E4>Z Apr 11 00:04:41 uberserver dspam[1361]: Unable to determine the destination user Apr 11 00:04:41 uberserver dspam[1361]: DSPAM agent misconfigured: aborting The line with the correct signature showing up is simply outputing 'signature' after: signature = mail_get_first_header(mail, SIGHEADERLINE); The 'working with signature' that shows the corrupted signature is right before call_dspam is called, and it outputs siglist->sig: ... syslog(LOG_INFO, "working with signature %s ", siglist->sig ); if ((*enh_error = call_dspam (siglist->sig, is_spam))) { ... This leads me to believe that there's a problem with: list_append(listpool, &siglist)->sig = p_strdup(listpool, signature); but I'm really not sure how dovecot deals with allocating pooled memory, as that's what it appears to be doing. I'm not sure what information might be useful to anyone in helping me look into this and the searches i've been able to do have been unsuccessful.
