[Dovecot] invalid mbox files

Hello! I recently upgraded from dovecot 0.9x to 1.0.5-Aplha and now when ever folders are opened (in IMAP), it keeps saying invalid mbox files. It worked fine in 0.99.x. It is detecting the right mbox files because it lists the folders and the subscriptions correctly. I am using "default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u" in the config file, but I get the same error with "Detect automatically". It generates nothing in the log files so I am lost!! I tried both outlook and thunderbird but same results. Thanks for the help, Harout S. Hedeshian

[Dovecot] 1.0alpha5: fcntl() locking problem

Hi, My setup: Solaris 9, /var/mail is NFS mounted from another Solaris 9 box, home directories and dovecot index stuff is on local ufs filesystems. I upgraded from alpha4 to a5 about 36 hours ago. Dovecot is configured like so during the build: VERSION=1.0.alpha5 CC=gcc CFLAGS="-g -O" CPPFLAGS=-I/opt/openssl/include LDFLAGS=-L/opt/openssl/lib \ ./configure --prefix=/opt/dovecot.$VERSION --with-ssl=openssl \ --with-ssldir=/opt/openssl/ssl > configure.out This afternoon dovecot basically locked up where a lot of people (including me) were getting: imap(user): fcntl() failed with mbox file /var/mail/user: No record locks available for syslog messages, and their mailbox operations would fail. In my case pine just closed the mailbox with an internal error. I did a quick fix by stopping dovecot, killing all dovecot processes, killing /usr/lib/nfs/lockd on the dovecot server, and restarting lockd. Ideas? Suggestions? Jeff Earickson Colby College

[Dovecot] Bug with userdb prefetch

Hi, when I'm (trying) to use userdb prefetch with ldap, it works fine for system users, but for virtual users without their own uid and gid, it won't work. I get in the log: Dec 31 01:34:47 buick dovecot: auth(default): prefetch(oddrun,127.0.0.1): userdb_uid not returned Dec 31 01:34:47 buick dovecot: auth(default): prefetch(oddrun,127.0.0.1): userdb_gid not returned Which means that the problem is that user_global_uid and user_global_gid is not used when using prefetch. Hi all, I've managed to get dovecot running with ldaps (ssl over port 636, not starttls). Btw, it's working right only if i specify "TLSVerifyClient never" in my slapd.conf. [Dovecot] new user setup trouble

Hi again, I am still trying to run Dovecot but persistently get the errors Corrupted transaction log file and Lost transaction log file. I cannot find any reference to this problem that will help, I have checked the file permissions and locks and cannot see any obvious cause. Could somebody please advise what I might be doing wrong or direct me to somewhere else that I can ask for or find help. Below is some information about the problem. [Dovecot] Dovecot index cache regeneration

Hi, We've been using dovecot in the lab now for quite a while and really like the results we're seeing. Underlying dovecot we're using maildir mailboxes. We have the need to manually remove maildir files from time to time. That is, by hand (we'll, actually by script) but not via imap or pop. Dues to dovecot's index caching (which I might add, we love most of the time) imap clients still continue to display the message once they're gone (as we'd expect). However, in this instance it's not what we're after. So my question is, what is the "dovecot recommended" way to force the index cache to regenerate. We really don't want to delete the entire index cache for a particular mailbox as larger mailboxes will then need to unnecessarily regenerate indices on unaffected messages. Hello, I just tried dovecot-stable-20051206.tar.gz. It takes me one additional day to get it work. >From INSTALL file, it failed to miss the following installation steps: 1) needs to create the file /etc/pam.d/dovecot 2) needs to create the directory /etc/ssl/certs/ and /etc/ssl/private/, configure doc/dovecot-openssl.cnf, chmod +x doc/mkcerts.sh doc/mkcerts.sh Not sure why it is not in the the file INSTALL. For pop3 client configuration, I wonder if it is OK for me to use: #outlook-no-nuls: # Outlook and Outlook Express hang if mails contain NUL characters. # This setting replaces them with 0x80 character. # oe-ns-eoh: # Outlook Express and Netscape Mail breaks if end of headers-line is # missing. This option simply sends it if it's missing. pop3_client_workarounds = outlook-no-nuls, oe-ns-eoh or dovecot can only allow one such as: pop3_client_workarounds = outlook-no-nuls Thanks. Tom

[Dovecot] LDAP authenticated bind support

Recently at Better.be we implemented LDAP authenticated bind support for dovecot. A patch against CVS HEAD is attached. I have not tested it against all possible configurations one can use, but the basic operation seems to be right. As documented in the patch, it adds one new option to the dovecot-ldap.conf configuration file: # Set "auth_bind" to "yes" if you want to use "authenticated binds" # as a login validation mechanism. NOTE: the pass_attrs option # will (naturally) be ignored if you enable this auth_bind = yes Authenticated bind support is implemented asynchronously. This involves 2 asynchronous calls: the first being 'ldap_search' to find the dn to bind against and the second being the actual 'ldap_bind' call. I'd love to hear some feedback on this. Hi! I'm currently trying to migrate from courier-imapd to dovecot... Unfortunately I'm experiences some difficulties here... Since I don't want any user to notice the change of the server backend I've tried changing the namespace in dovecot.conf to namespace private { separator = . location = maildir:~/Maildir prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes hidden = no } With this setting almost everything works fine! Almost... ;-) Squirrelmail won't show 'INBOX' on the left side of the folder tree... If I configure dovecot without the 'INBOX.' prefix it works fine in Squirrelmail, except that all other eMail clients show all sub-folders as a sub-folder of root and not the inbox... root \- inbox \- sent \- trash \- drafts \- private \- spam instead of root \- inbox | \- sent | \- trash | \- drafts | \- private | \- spam any Idea what could be wrong? I've read the wiki about the courier-migration and also tried the conversion script ... but something is wrong I'm afraid... thanks in advance, Andreas

[Dovecot] inbox problems when moving from server to server

this is probably an FAQ but I moved all the mailboxes from a gentoo server to an ubuntu one and all old inbox messages "disappeared" for. New messages appear and can be read, deleted etc. the old messages can still be found in the Maildir/cur directory like they were on the old mail server. Ownership was changed to user:user and is 600 permissions. Dovecot version: 0.99.14-1ubuntu1 all other mailboxes are fine, all messages visible as far as we can tell. ideas?

I've setup dovecot to authenticate against postgresql. But I consistently get a "No INBOX for user" error when I try to do pop requests. Any pointers would be helpful. Hi, I am new to dovecot and have just got it up and running on mandrake 8.2. Dovecot seems to be running OK, I can telnet in and log in and Mail on OS X will get the folder list but if a client selects a mail box I get an error back. I'm adding the finishing touch to the Postfix Dovecot plug-in, to be released with snapshot 20051223. The plug-in code quality is generally very good. I had two observations, both of minor importance: - The authentication server protocol uses the TAB character as a delimiter, so it is critical that legitimate user names don't contain this character. This is of course trivial to ensure with the authentication server implementation, so I will not worry about it. - I noticed that the plug-in did not satisfy one Postfix principle, namely that operations be bounded in time. I added a time limit for connect, read and write operations. Postfix will time-bound all operations anyway, but the diagnostics of the watchdog timer are less specific and therefore less useful. Hi, I'm using RHEL4 and since the dovecot RPM is present in the main repository, I'm thinking about switching from courier-imap (with whom I've got trouble to update) to Dovecot. Here are two questions about Dovecot (google didn't answer me): 1. Is it possible for dovecot to use the bind mecanism against ldap for authentification purpose. My main concern is to avoid the clear-text password in the dovecot-ldap.conf file. With courier-imap, the process simply bind to the ldap tree with the users's supplied login/password. No need for a special authentification purpose user. 2. Does imap's dovecot implementation support folders imbrication (more than one level folders) ? Thanks, kfx.

Hi there, Does anyone have Dovecot working correctly with pam_mkhomedir, please? I seem to be going through quite a number of IMAP servers this week, trying to find one that will not only authenticate against a Windows domain but which will also create home directories for users the first time they log in. I'm using winbind to do the authentication & that seems to be doing the trick in the first instance - if I log in using Squirrelmail I see entries written to the system log saying: Dec 16 11:58:35 baby pam_winbind[9319]: user 'ned' granted access I have set Dovecot to log to /var/log/mail and in that I see only three entries saying: imap-login: Dec 16 11:58:36 Info: Login: ned [127.0.0.1] But Squirrelmail gives: ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: SELECT "INBOX" Reason Given: /etc/pam.d/imap says: #%PAM-1.0 auth required /lib/security/pam_winbind.so account required /lib/security/pam_winbind.so session required /lib/security/pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel umask=0022 If I use the same configuration for SSH then the user's home directory is created upon authenticaton, but not with Dovecot. I chose to try Dovecot because I understood it handled PAM session wossisnames, which Courier-IMAP doesn't. My dovecot.conf is attached - I'm wondering if the problem could be with the "auth_userdb" setting, but `getent passwd` does show an entry for the user: # grep ned /etc/passwd # getent passwd | grep ned ned:x:10012:10000:Ned Nedbody:/home/DOMAIN/ned:/bin/false # Many thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions - I'd really like to understand what's going on here. I believe I can authenticate against the domain using LDAP / Active Directory, but since I don't know if that'll help I'd rather not go that route yet. If I first try to log in using ssh with pam_mkhomedir enabled then the users' home directory is created successfully & I can subsequently log on in Squirrelmail. But it's important to me that I shouldn't have to create users' home dirs for them - I should be able to add them on the Windows domain controller & just tell them to log in to their email - the home dir on the mailserver should be created automagically when they authenticate against the domain. So it's easy to reproduce but I'm not sure how to go about debugging it. Can anyone help with this? It's a very recent Linux-2.6 system so epoll support should not be an issue. Additionally -CVS won't compile for me right now, it bails out when compiling the 'quota' plugin. Workaround is to manually edit the dovecot/src/plugins/Makefile and not build this plugin.. Timo - is there a file/commit missing from -CVS at the moment for this plugin? Hi, I'm testing/debuging the migration from mbox to maildir in a mailserver running Dovecot 1.0alpha5. I migrated all 472715 emails(in a test server) and later noted that dovecot could not get the same flags/status of the emails as in the mbox. I was using perfect_maildir.pl and I think its not dovecot fault. Seems to me that perfect_maildir.pl convert the emails in a way that dovecot could not understand completelly. [Dovecot] mailbox from ldap and indexes

Hi, because of quota, I would like to have indexes on another filesystem then user's maildir. This I can do with "default_mail_env= maildir:/% h/Maildir:INDEX=/var/indexes/%u" or something. But when I get the users mailbox location from ldap, there is no way to set the index? I guess I can make the ldap entry contain the INDEX as well, but I would like to use the ldap entry in the exim conf as well, to tell exim where to write the mails... Is there a way I haven't thought of yet? I have this in dovecot-ldap.conf now: user_attrs = uid,homeDirectory,mailbox,uid,uidNumber,gidNumber If I could do something like: user_attrs = uid,..,"maildir:" . mailbox . I'm running Solaris 9 Sparc with Dovecot alpha 5 and using maildir format.. Hello, I'm running Dovecot v1.0.alpha5 and I'm trying to get the quota plugins to work. I've enabled modules in dovecot.conf, but when the IMAP connection is opened, the log shows undefined symbols. : Loading modules from directory: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap : dlopen(/usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/libtrash_plugin.so) failed: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/libtrash_plugin.so: undefined symbol: quota : dlopen(/usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/libimap_quota_plugin.so) failed: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/libimap_quota_plugin.so: undefined symbol: quota : dlopen(/usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/libquota_plugin.so) failed: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/libquota_plugin.so: undefined symbol: dict_transaction_commit The source shows that the modules are read by reading the module directory and loading each of the found .so files. Supposing that the ordering of the files in the directory is wrong, I've even recreated the module directory manually, copying the libs into it in different orders; no change. It seems to me as though there are cross-dependencies in the shared libs that cannot be resolved. Has anybody found it to work or could anyone give me a hint on how to get it working? Hi, I'm having trouble as of about noon today. I noticed I wasn't getting any new messages in Thunderbird. I restarted it and still nothing. I looked at the log, and found nothing from dovecot for a long time (since perhaps noon today). I restarted dovecot, but still it didn't get me new mail. I finally removed dovecot.* in my Maildir folder and restarted dovecot. I'm using 1.0alpha4. [Dovecot] Auto-expunge

Hi, For some time we've been intermittently experiencing a problem whereby dovecot often automatically expunges "deleted" messages. This has happened across several mailboxes. The problem is proving difficult to isolate as it's seemingly non-deterministic in nature. One commonality, however, is that the "auto-expunge" seems to occur with greater frequency on mailboxes with a larger of deleted messages. First off, does this sound any alarm bells for anybody else? Perhaps others have encountered this in the past? I've trolled the mailing list (and web) but cannot find any references to this occurring elsewhere. Additional Information: We have experienced this "bug" in 1.0-alpha3 and alpha4. Underlying dovecot we have a maildir, populated via Perl's Mail::Box::Maildir module. Obviously I have an account. This is Solaris 10. I have been tinkering with the /etc/pam.conf without success. Does anyone have a solution? If its too hard for them to setup the pop3 catch all, we can probably put some mapping in place to smtp froward mail to their server. [Dovecot] Two-phase delete/expunge ?

Is it possible to have messages which have been marked for deletion or which are to be expunged, moved into a "secret" directory on the IMAP server? The IMAP client would consider the message as deleted, but an administrator could easily restore single messages (without having to retrieve tapes) by moving the message back into inbox. I understand there are patches floating around somewhere enabling that for Cyrus, but I'd love to see Dovecot do that as well. Is anyone aware of such functionality? Thanks, -JP

Dear all, I have a devocot server based on fedora core 3 in Japan. When my users are in Japan, there is no any problem reported.Devocot works very well. But when my users are in China, sometimes the following problem occured. Sometimes the user can not download mails, after that all connections attempt to server(e.g http/ssh) failed. the user has to close OutLook, and wait for about 10 minutes, then access the webmail to read mail. Maybe the POP NG is due to the network , but what is the possible reason of 10-minute other connection NG? Is there any solution? Because users in China share the same outside IP, when one user occures POP NG, all users occures server access NG, that is a big puzzle. Thanks in advance. Best regards,

[Dovecot] 1.0alpha5 released

We have now some new big features: - Beginnings of dbox mailbox format. It should work, but if you happen to delete/break index files, the mails aren't found again. So really not a good idea to use it for more than testing. - GSSAPI (Kerberos 5) support by Jelmer Vernooij with some fixes by pod(a)herald.ox.ac.uk - Added dictionary API to Dovecot, similar to what Postfix has. It can be used for getting/setting key=value pairs, which can be useful for many different purposes. For example it could be used to store mailbox metadata for ANNOTATEMORE extension. Implemented SQL backend for it. In future there should be berkeley DB backend at least. Also there could be some kind of proxy backend which would use UNIX socket to connect to dictionary server doing the actual work. This way each imap/lda process wouldn't have to connect to SQL server themself. - Quota plugin is now included. We also have now dictionary based quota support, which means the quota limits and values can be stored in SQL. However I haven't actually tested these changes yet, so there's a good chance the quota plugin doesn't actually work at all. - Created a new trash plugin which works only together with quota plugin. The point of it is to expunge mails from a list of configurable mailboxes whenever saving new mails would cause the account to go over quota. The oldest mails are expunged first, and only as many mails are expunged as is needed to save the new mail. For configuration it first looks up for ~/.dovecot.trash.conf, and then fallbacks to /etc/dovecot-trash.conf. The file format is "<priority> <mailbox name>". It's possible to have multiple mailboxes with same priority. Lower number = higher priority. This plugin is also currently untested. The plugins are currently installed as shared libraries to plugin directory. At some point I'll add a configure option to select which plugins to compile directly into binaries. Possibly even do it by default for some plugins (quota). And smaller new features: - If LDAP lookup fails because connection gets closed, try retrying it again after reconnect. This is however untested, hopefully didn't break LDAP code completely.. - %w variable in dovecot-auth contains password. Can be used to do eg.: password_query = select null as password from users where userid = '%u' and password = password('%w') - syslog_facility setting And fixes: - auth_cache was quite broken - adding keywords caused sometimes assert-crash - If login_greeting_capability = yes we could have sent the capability before dovecot-auth returned what auth mechanisms were available, forcing clients to use plaintext authentication - Lots of mbox fixes again.. - userdb prefetch wasn't supposed to be uncommented in dovecot-example.conf in alpha4. Comment it out if you don't need it. - Don't crash with "out of memory" in 64bit systems - IDLE command might have crashed when finishing itself if there were lots of external changes - pop3_reuse_xuidl setting wasn't actually working

I've seen this was mentioned before but remains unsolved. I upgraded Dovecot from 0.99 to v1.0.alpha4 yesterday and it rendered my inbox inaccessible: Dec 15 00:09:07 sand dovecot: imap(willers): Corrupted index file /home/willers/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index: messages_count too large (1121 > 1115) I've since moved that inbox away so I can view my new mail again. The error has moved with the mbox file: Dec 15 00:27:41 sand dovecot: imap(willers): Corrupted index file /home/willers/mail/old-inbox/.imap/200407-200512/dovecot.index: messages_count too large (1121 > 1115) Dec 15 00:27:41 sand dovecot: child 83886 (imap) killed with signal 11 This is on FreeBSD 4.8 (yes, yes ... but: "up 687 days" which is quite nice) all running on local disk. So earlier suspicions about NFS or MacOS X are out of the window. One day I'll move move from mbox to dir format and the problem will go away, in the meanwhile, I thought it would be good to resolve this issue. [Dovecot] writing an MDA, help me avoid corrupted indexes

Hello. First, I want to thank those responsible for Dovecot IMAP as it was a real treat to implement in comparison to my mostly-failed attempts with Cyrus. The passwd-file authentication was exactly what I needed as I really didn't want to have to deal with PAM or LDAP but where I am setting up a server with virtual accounts. I'm using Postfix as an MTA, and it quite handily passes the mail off to SpamAssassin. From there I need an MDA to dump any mails detected as spam into a common spam folder, discard any mails with viruses (antivir) and send a notification to me, and then drop good mail into the appropriate maildir directory for the virtual users to get via both POP3 and IMAP. I could conceivably use procmail to do that MDA, and I've done similar things with procmail in the past, but my growing experience with procmail indicates that procmail is too ferocious for what simple work I need done, and too difficult to make work right in a virtual-user environment. So I've written my own little MDA with a few lines of shell that will take the mail from Postfix+SpamAssassin and ultimately deposit mails in the maildirs. So far so good, except that I keep seeing corrupt indexes... probably because I'm not touching the indexes at all with the MDA. My guess is that in order for the MDA to properly deal with maildir it needs to adjust the indexes after depositing new mail. Okay. So can someone either give me a pointer to the proper documentation on this, including the index file formats, or perhaps just explain it to me? Maybe I'm missing a larger picture of maildir handling? I've glanced through http://www.dovecot.org/doc/index.txt but I notice that the index files are not ASCII, so I'm not sure where to start at understanding that documentation. [Dovecot] How to serve two "inboxes" via imap

Hi In our setup we have mail delivered to /var/spool/mail/<username>. Many users like thunderbird as their MUA and we typically have thunderbird set up to read mail using a movemail account with the local mail directory set to ~/mail so that the mail can be read easily by pine as well. So, when a user clicks the "Get Mail" button in Thunderbird, mail is moved from /var/spool/mail/<username> to ~/mail/Inbox. Although I can serve other folders from ~/mail my imap clients don't see ~/mail/Inbox, they see just /var/spool/mail/<username> as INBOX. Can anyone advise please how to make the ~/mail/Inbox available as well via imap using dovecot (currently using 1.0-alpha5). We currently use default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u Many thanks Roderick Johnstone

I am trying to compile the 1.0alpha5 on Mac OS X Server 10.4.3, and not having success. My configure flags are: ./configure --with-mysql We're thinking of migrating from courier. Hi, does anyone already use the checkpassword authentication scheme? I have not found any description how I have to configure dovecot in order to work together with qmails checkpassword. Enabling passdb = checkpassword /bin/checkpassword in dovecot.conf starts /bin/checkpassword for every authentication request, but the result does not seem to matter for the authentication. Without enabling a userdb entry, dovecot claims not to be able to find out the uid, gid and home of the user, although checkpassword replies these values. Setting static values with "userdb = static uid=$fixed_mail_uid gid=$fixed_mail_gid home=/maildata/%d/%n" results in being every login successful, no matter if the checkpassword authentication is ok, or not. I'm using the latest dovecot nightly build from 22. Nov. 2005. - Florian

Hi, dovecot (1.0.alpha5) won't compile with inotify support because inotify.h can't be found. I'm running Linux 2.6.15-rc5 with headers from 2.6.12 (like most vendors). I've noticed that beagle and other inotify-enabled applications ships with an inotify.h. Could this be scheduled for alpha6? :-)

[Dovecot] No "Ok Dovecot Ready " on fc3 with ssl on ports 993 and 995

hey friends, I am trying to secure my mail server on FC3.I have enabled TLS support in postfix(version postfix-2.1.5) and want to use ssl settings for dovecot( 0.99.13). Lines of ssl in /etc/dovecot.conf protocols = imaps pop3s imaps_listen = * pop3s_listen = * ssl_disable = no ssl_cert_file = /usr/share/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key_file = /usr/share/ssl/private/dovecot.pem ssl_parameters_file = /var/run/dovecot/ssl-parameters.dat disable_plaintext_auth = yes If i do telnet localhost 993 or 995 I don't see any "Ok Dovecot Ready" message.If I enable pop3 and imap in dovecot.conf and then I telnet localhost 110 or 143 I can see "Ok Dovecot Ready" message. Hi, i never used dovecot so far, but i heard a couple good things about it .. for one the debian maintainer of the exim package recommended it :-) so i want to change our mailserver (currently using ipop3 and uw-imap) to dovecot ... now my boss seems to favour cyrus. i could use some good arguments for dovecot, also your experiences with it and with other mailservers so i can make a reasonable desicion and preset some good arguments :-) Florian

If our symptoms are the same, maybe our setup errors are as well. The problem... while Thunderbird and Outlook are OK, the Inbox doesn't show in Outlook Express. You can click on the Imap Folders button, select the Inbox, click on the "Go To" button and the Inbox will appear until you shut down Outlook Express. Next time you fire up OE, no Inbox. Other than that, it all works as expected. I haven't torture-tested the setup yet though, I wanted to set up one of each client and get the basics running before doing that. Are your symptoms similar? [Dovecot] Case sensitive nightmare

It took me 4 days to figure this out and I sure hope someone can help me solve it. My Setup: Postfix + MySQL + dovecot dovecot.conf: default_mail_env = maildir:/var/spool/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir password_query = SELECT password FROM mailbox WHERE username='%u' user_query = SELECT maildir, 108 AS uid, 108 AS gid FROM mailbox WHERE username='%u' The virtual host schema is postfix.admin compatible but I¹m not using it (phpMyAdmin is actually easier to use). When foo(a)domain.tld, abrand new account, logs in using an IMAP client (any client; squirrelmail, OE, tbird, Apple...) a maildir is created named domain.tld/foo/Maildir¹ and everything is good. Now I login as Foo(a)domain.tld and then as fOo(a)domain.tld and then as foO(a)domain.tld then so on for every case variation. Each of these accounts can login correctly, they are seen as being the same account by dovecot. On the other hand they are not seen as being the same mailbox! When I check my mail spool I see one maildir for every case variation (domain.tld/foo/Maildir, domain.tld/FOO/Maildir, etc.) It would seem to me that the queries above would fail for the different variations of the name but they don¹t seem to. Is dovecot converting %u to lower case for the query on the virtual users table but then using it unconverted when looking up the Mairdir for the account? If the username column has the value foo(a)domain.tld1 how does SELECT * FROM table WHERE username=¹FOO(a)domain.tld1 match the row? Also puzzling is that I select a column named maildir which has the path to the mailbox in it (using the correct case). Even if SELECT pigs fly¹ AS when WHERE FoO¹=¹foo¹ the maildir path for the account is being returned which is domain.tld/foo/Maildir¹ so how does domain.tld/FoO/Maildir¹ get created? This is both a pain in the nuts support nightmare but also a security problem (albeit fairly limited). An account named ³barneyrubble² could generate a significant number of maildir directories if you logged in with every variation thereof. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

[Dovecot] Corrupted index problem when disk quota exceeded

Hi! I should report yet another problem with dovecot index files. Suppose we have a user with his filesystem disk quota exceeded. He logins via POP3 or IMAP to remove some mail messages and fix this problem. When he logins for the first time, everything works fine, and he can read and remove something. But if his disk quota is still exceeded when he logs out, he cannot login any more. I guess it is not fair to give user only one chance to clean his mail folders :) The problem is that dovecot tries to rewrite index files on logout, but it cannot do it correctly because the user's filesystem quota is exceeded. So the next time dovecot just replies "Mailbox is in inconsistent state, please relogin". I believe that dovecot should work with any kind of corrupted index files, this is why I report such kind of bugs here. My linux is Redhat AS3 U3, openssl is 0.9.7a-33 I downloaded dovecot 0.99.14 src rpm and rebuild to binary rpm Everything went smooth but I tried to install the dovecot binary rpm, it reported that openssl need >= 0.9.7f-4 Since there are many other rpm packages have dependency on the current version of openssl 0.9.7a-33, so It's not possible to upgrade openssl to 0.9.7f-4 or greater Is it a must to use openssl 0.9.7f-4 or greater in order to use dovecot 0.99.14 ?

[Dovecot] Order of emails

Hi We have an issue regarding the order in which emails are displayed in an imap folder, which our customers regularly complain about. By default, emails are returned from a folder in the order in which they were placed into the folder, which makes perfect sense. However, if an email is moved into another folder, it will always appear at the top, no matter how old it is. We could order the emails ourselves before displaying them in our webmail program. However, this would mean parsing the headers of every single email, which could be many thousands, so would slow things down considerably and greatly increase load. At the moment, we only read 30 at a time as the user pages through the folder. >From what I can see, the order is determined by the timestamp in the email filename, which gets updated every time the email is moved. Is there any way we could disable this, so the filename (or at least the timestamp part of it) remains constant? If so, would this affect in any way the behaviour of other imap clients, such as Outlook? All suggestions welcome. Hello, there is a little bug in Squirrelmail 1.4.5 or Dovecot 1.0.alpha4-1: the sort is not correct if I use squirrelmail with the option: 10. Allow server thread sort : true 11. Allow server-side sorting : true with the option on false and with Thunderbird 1.5rc1 there is no problem, but I think Thunderbird 1.5rc1 already does the sort by itself. [Dovecot] Update on Using Dovecot with Webmin

First of all thanks for the replies. I have decided to try the updated version 1.0 alpha After uninstalling Dovecot .99 and cleaning up user,groups and files. (Dovecot .99 was authenticating as best I can tell using unix users = the default -- and PAM = the default - I only had to setup the PAM if I remember correctly. Loaded Dovecot 1.0, made sure user, folders and files all seem to be setup correctly. Now - Webmin is able to stop and start Dovecot and it loads fine on reboot. But, it is pretty obvious that the Webmin modual is not up with then new and much more powerful Dovecot config file. For me that is OK, as long it will show weather the service is up or down - stop and start it, which is seems to be doing just fine. The reason I say this is when I try and use the Webmin modual to set user authentication to Standard Unix user database and PAM - it does not work. So I am needing help editing the Dovecot.conf file. My new problem is this: Can not get users to authenticate. I am trying to first setup just unix authentication - with plain text for starters then will move up to more secure. I have left the config file default - just made changes until it would start. With the notable execption I set plain text to yes. I have setup the Dovecot PAM file per the documentation. So what I need help now with is this I am wanting to setup a very simple setup to start with: A setup so that a outlook express client can login, using plain text password, unix login and password POP3 = yes Users = linux/unix (/etc/passwd) Passwords = PAM or Shadow Can anyone send me and edited config file that is setup to for this type of authentication? Or cut from their config file those sections needed for the authentication? Actually, if anyone is willing to share a config file that is setup with a more secure type of authentication that would be great too. (Thinking of switching to Cyrus - have any of you jump off of Cyrus to use Dovecot -- why??) hi I have dovecot (1.0.alpha4-1) installed on a Debian sid amd64 machine (dovecot-imapd and dovecot-common). I am using this so that I can use both Mutt and something like Thunderbird to access my local Maildir folders. Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes when I try to access my mailboxes locally using Mutt, it hangs for a very long time (the bottom of the screen says "Selecting in..." (.in is the mailbox), and eventually gives me a blank mailbox with "(no mailbox)" at the bottom of the screen. In /var/log/mail.err I find lines like the following: Dec 3 06:39:02 localhost dovecot: child 4600 (imap) returned error 83 (Out of memory) Dec 3 06:44:03 localhost dovecot: imap(ric): pool_system_malloc(): Out of memory For example, it was working fine earlier this morning, but now I am unable to access the mailboxes and I'm getting the error messages in /var/log/mail.err. I have the same problem with Thunderbird; it hangs and cannot access the mailboxes. At my office I have dovecot (0.99.14-1) installed on a Debian sarge machine and it works fine. I would appreciate any suggestions as to what to try or what to look for. Hi All, I have Dovecot 1.0 Alpha3 running on x86_64 Linux 2.6 multi-CPU box using Maildir folders. Moving messages from one folder to another in Thunderbird 1.0.7, regardless of their size (usually small), produced error 83, "Out of memory", when both of these parameters were unset (default): mail_read_mmaped, mmap_disable. The log line before the error was pool_system_malloc(): Out of memory. I initially changed mmap_disable to "yes", the error stopped, but it still wasn't moving messages reliably. I then set MM parameters more aggressively: mail_read_mmaped = yes, mmap_disable = no (and the third of the series, mmap_no_write, is left unset). The error stopped popping up, and the moving works speedily. Maybe the default for mail_read_mmaped should be "yes?" Thank you! Sergey.

[Dovecot] Controlling Dovecot with Webmin

Dear Sir I have just setup a Fedora 4SE server, with Webmin - latest production release and Dovecot .99.14. The only way to start dovecot is to be logged into the server as root - locally or ssh, and type the dovecot command. >From Webmin - logged in as ROOT, when I attempt to start Dovecot it tells me that it can't because it can not open the config file - permission denied. This indicates to me that Webmin is not really logged in a "root" but that doesn't seem right since I use root/password when I access the server per the Webmin instructions. Also, in the Webmin configuration for that server - it references a master.pid file. Which did not exist. I tried to create a pid file using the PID (19638) of the Dovecot service. That did not help the start up problem, but I am sure needs to be fixed before I can have the service start on boot up?? I got the PID number after starting Dovecot and then going and seeing the services that where then running. The user/group Dovecot where created during the install. Sendmail is running along with SpamAssassign. When I start Dovecot, logged in as root at shell, everything runs well, email is processed all the way through. Do you know how to resolve this problem of controlling Dovecot through Webmin and making sure the Dovecot will start on reboot of the server. Thank you very much. Lee D. [Dovecot] Dovecot login hangs often

Hi - We have dovecot version : 0.99.11 release : 2.EL4.1 on Centos 4.2, with an LDAP backend (Samba PDC) and pam set to authenticate against LDAP. Dovecot is set to use pam for authentication. It uses mbox, and the machine has very little load (95% idle, no memory pressure). Every 36 hours or so, no users are able to login to imap (we have only imap enabled). Other services that use the same backend are working fine (like squid and ssh logins) even while this is happening. So we are not sure if we can blame this on pam/ldap problems. When this happens, we tried a "service dovecot restart", and that results in saying the "address is in use". About 10 "imap-login" processes seem to lurk around holding on to the imap port. We can get dovecot service to start again, only after a "killall -9 imap-login". What kind of debug should we enable so that you all can diagnose this further ? Any other configuration things that we should try ? We prefer to stay with Redhat/Centos releases, but if this is already reportedly fixed in one of the later builds, we are open to trying one. Hello all, any suggestions on this? It seems like a pretty serious issue and it hasn't reoccurred since we switched back to UW imapd. As I mentioned, it seems to be related to dovecot compiled on Solaris 10/x86... Intended Format will/should be such as: 'timestamp_in_second' user_id remote_ip one user per line. My guess we have all the needed information within dovecot to make such list. But I have seen no way to 'trick' dovecot (dovecot-1.0.alpha3) to do it... Could someone on the list able to give me some advices? I know there is Perl script to scan maillog file and extract information from collected data, but this seem to me 'a kind of the very last option'.... May be the trick can be achieved using 'executable' function? [Dovecot] Pop-before-smtp and MySQL?

Hi, I found that dovecot have many nice features. Now I write because I'm tring to setup the dovecot server, I would substitute a qpopper daemon (patched for mysql authentication) The problem I find is to set up the pop-before-smtp using sql (mysq) as written in http://wiki.dovecot.org/moin.cgi/PopBSMTPAndDovecot (Waiting for post_login ;-) I would use the script popbsmtp.sh and not a perl pig. (I'm using qpopper patched to store the relay IP in mysql and it works) I set .my.cnf in /root What happen is that the $3 don't contain the IP that should be written to the DB. Is there something I miss ? I tried to modify the dovecot.conf file like this mail_executable = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/popbsmtp.sh /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 %r "%r" and it write to the db the litteral value %r and not the ip, otherwise it write nothing. the connection with mysql works and any other operation on it works. this should be the last step for my setting.
