Hi! On the unstable version of Debian I try to use Dovecot POP3-ssl server. I both tried out the debian package(1.0.alpha3-2.0.1) from the official repository and compiling from source(1.0 alpha3 version). The error is always the same: Oct 15 09:28:04 www dovecot: pop3-login: Can't set cipher list to 'all:! LOW': error:25066067:DSO support routines:DLFCN_LOAD:could not load the shared library Is it a bug of dovecot or a bug of the openssl package? [Dovecot] a few questions about my experience with alpha1

Hi all, I've just switched from 0.99.10.6 to alpha1 on a Solaris 9 system, and I have a few questions: 1) I'm using "verbose_proctitle = yes" but I don't see the special username or IP address information in the output of ps. I've used: ps -fu dovecot ps -ef | grep dovecot /usr/ucb/ps aux | grep dovecot The process table simply shows the /usr/local/sbin/dovecot, dovecot-auth, and imap-login processes. Is there something else that I need to do, or is there a special way that I should use ps? 2) After sending dovecot a HUP signal, the logs will report something like: Warning: SIGHUP received - reloading configuration And everything seems to work fine. However, *sometimes* after sending a HUP signal, logging will stop indefinitely. Has anyone else noticed anything similar? 3) We use UW in production, and I'm new to any real use of namespaces. Almost all of our clients use the root "~/Mail/" to find their folders (in $HOME/Mail/) and their INBOXes are located in $HOME/.inbox. A few people actually find their folders with the direct path Mail/foldername. So, I'm trying to configure Dovecot to work with any of these roots / prefixes: ~/Mail/ Mail/ "" (empty/blank) I'm using the namespace configuration below, and it seems to work with any of the above prefixes. However, the logging that I see makes me wonder if I'm doing it the best way. Note the attached log file. [Dovecot] Problem with pop3 and alpha3

Hi all, I have a problem with dovecot-alpha3 and pop3 protocol (on a tru64 5.1a...) In my Maildir/cur there are 8144 mails and if I use pop3 protocol I receive in the output 8146 line instead of 8144. The problem is that 2 mails are duplicated . The output of List command is like: 1 51265 2 261783 . . . 2987 30291 2987 30291 (duplicated line) 2988 16631 . 4601 1231 4602 8921 4602 8921 (Another duplicated line) 4603 1313 I've deleted dovecot.* and dovecot-uidlist in the Maildir path but the problem remains. Suggest? Is a bug? I've tried also to remove the first 1000 messages but the problem now is on the mail number 2635 and not 1987 like I can think. [Dovecot] Possible bug: why is the owner of home-directory important?

Dear all, I am trying to migrate one of our systems to dovecot. We were using uw-imapd in black-box-mode before. Since the home-directory of a user is not unique per definition on our systems, we have kind of a different setup. As an example: I got a user, let's say user1. It's home directory is /local/web/websites/5850844095/www. This directory has the following permissions: # ls -la /local/web/websites/5850844095/|grep www drwxr-x--- 7 www-data g5850844095 4096 Oct 13 12:28 www (user1 is member of the group g5850844095) Why is logging in not working properly? See: # telnet localhost 143 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK dovecot ready. 1 LOGIN user1 password 1 OK Logged in. Connection closed by foreign host. And in the logfile I see: Oct 13 13:09:47 s1 dovecot: chdir(/local/web/websites/5850844095/www) failed with uid 1020: Permission denied Oct 13 13:09:47 s1 dovecot: child 1527 (imap) returned error 89 However, when I change the permissions on the home-dir to 755, it works. The point is, none of my mailboxes (INBOX or others) are in my home-dir, so why does dovecot need my home-directory? I hope someone can help. After updating from Dovecot 0.99.x series to Dovecot 1.0A, Nokia 9500 communicator crashes frequently while checking imap mailboxes over wlan? Any ideas? Any people with same problem? Looks like it dovecot relates since, it works with 0.99.x series. -- Eero

[Dovecot] Cyrus migration - Header version 6 not supported

Hello, I was previously running a cyrus server which I realized later on is overkill for what my needs so I would like to switch to dovecot. Unfortunately the cyrus2courier utility to migrate the mails gives me the error Header version 6 not supported I was using cyrus 2.2.3. Does anybody have any advice on how I could migrate all the mails ? Thank you. Arnaud.

[Dovecot] Cannot see new messages in Inbox

Hi, just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on this. I'm having a rather odd problem in that I cannot see new emails in my IMAP inbox, this is true for both Thunderbird & Squirrelmail. I know the mails are arriving & being delivered correctly as I see the logs for postfix & procmail, and I can also list them from a command prompt on the Linux mail server. The really odd thing is that I can see new mail in other folders within the same mailbox (maildir) without issue, it's only the inbox that seems to be exhibiting the problem. Nothing has changed on the server and all permissions look fine. The only thing I can think of is that I reinstalled my other machine with Linux the other day & setup Thunderbird as normal - I didn't have any problem at the time but yesterday I noticed the problem. I have tried stopping & restarting the dovecot service a few times but this hasn't helped. I've had this running for months now & this just seems to have cropped up, very strange. Any thoughts anyone? farmorg

[Dovecot] How to set up a passwd file for virtual hosting

Hi, Exim4 is running fine and I am trying to set up Dovecot 0.99 to handle virtual users (http://wiki.dovecot.org/moin.cgi/VirtualhostingWithExim) so I don't have to set up user accounts for each e-mail address I want to server out via pop3. I need to create a user and passd file, a bit like /etc/passwd, but in a different location for my dovecot virtual users. I can create a blank file such as /etc/dovecot/users (beware my increasing vi skills...) but how do I add users and passwords to this? Can I just type them in and separate them with colons? If so, how would I add a password to the file? I am happy using the passwd command which alters my user passwords in /etc/passwd. Can I use it or something similar to create the passwords for the users in my new file /etc/dovecot/users ? Is there any way I can use an MD5 hash or CRYPT format for the passwords? Yours, Richard

[Dovecot] FreeBSD Ports Issues

Installed dovecot for the first time, using the FreeBSD port. Found 2 issues with the port, and I've only been able to resolve one of them. First of all, the port, (or perhaps dovecot) does work with mysql 4.1 encryption. I had to create a user with access to the mysql table, then do 'set password = old_password('password');' in order to get dovecot to talk to the server. The second issue, is that dovecot seems to be ignoring my user_query settings. I have the following in dovecot-sql.conf: password_query = SELECT password FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' user_query = SELECT maildir, 125 as uid, 125 as gid FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' The password query works, however the user query seems to default to something else, and no matter how I change the user_query line in dovecot-sql.conf, it uses the same query. [Dovecot] Dovecot on FC3 with Active Directory authentication

I am building an IMAP server that uses Dovecot/Sendmail on FC3 to replace our POP server that uses Dovecot (via POP)/Sendmail on FC2. My new server is authenticating users via winbind/smb against my WIndows 2003 Active Directory. The authentication is working great. The problem come up when a user gets an email and has not ever logged into the IMAP server via SSH, local, or GDM, therefore that user has no home directory. /etc/pam.d/ssh, /etc/pam.d/login, and /etc/pam.d/gdm all have a line calling mkhomedir.so, which is using the /etc/skel home directory skeleton to create the user's home dir upon successful login, however, when I add that line to /etc/pam.d/dovecot, I get a permission denied error in /var/log/maillog. I'm assuming this is because dovecot is running as the user at this point, and therefore does not have the necessary permissions to create a folder under / home/DOMAIN/, which is where the home dir is supposed to be. If I manually create the folder, and set it's permissions, or if the user logs in via any of the before-mentioned methods, dovecot and sendmail work great. Does anyone else run a similar setup? If so, how did you overcome this problem? If not, can some Linux gurus recommend either altering the write permissions on the /home/DOMAIN directory, or should I try to call the mkhomdir app earlier in the process somehow? Any help would be appreciated. I'm trying to make this as seamless as possible. Basically, I can manually create all the home dirs well enough, but when I add a new user to the Active Directory, it would be nice if this part was automated as much as possible. [Dovecot] Mapping username only for auth

I am running Dovecot alpha 3 with authentication from the local shadow file. I'd like to change the authentication to use our radius server. I can probably do this through pam. The usernames on the mail server are set up as first initial + last name ( jdoe for John Doe ). The usernames on the radius server are the employee number. Is there a way to map the username to the employee number in dovecot before handing off the authentication to the radius server? I want the usernames on the mail server to remain first initial + last name. I don't mind maintaining a mapping file to go from username to employee number because I can automate this task. Has anybody done this?

Hi, I am using SMTP-AUTH over TLS with sendmail, to allow remote users to authenticate and send mail via my server, and this uses saslauthd to authenticate users. I have set up saslauthd with the "MECH=rimap" mechanism, so it uses the local IMAP server, Dovecot, for authentication. I want to do this because Dovecot is set up to use /etc/passwd for user credentials (so I don't have multiple password files to manage), and Dovecot handles restricting the range of valid UIDs (including blocking root). (Using the default MECH=shadow with saslauthd allows all users to authenticate, which I don't want) For real "normal" users, this all works fine - right password = user can relay mail, wrong password = relaying denied. So far so good. If I try to authenticate as root (which I want NEVER to work), with the wrong password, Dovecot correctly refuses to allow root IMAP access and saslauthd/sendmail denies the relay. But if I try to authenticate as root with the correct password (which I still want NOT to work!), Dovecot still refuses IMAP access, and puts this in the maillog: Oct 5 14:16:18 hadrian dovecot: Logins with UID 0 not permitted (user root) Oct 5 14:16:18 hadrian imap-login: Internal login failure: root [127.0.0.1] But saslauthd seems to treat this as a successful authentication and still allows root to relay email! So: Dovecot problem or saslauthd problem? Server is running CentOS 4.1, fully patched. Packages are dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1, cyrus-sasl-2.1.19-5.EL4, sendmail-8.13.1-2. Thanks Andrew

Hi all, I really don't know where to go from here. I've traced and pasted, but never heard responses.... I'm getting the following (see bottom of this email) in a single day of dmesg....most of the time the error message in the log file is something like: Oct 5 09:21:43 mail1 dovecot: imap(*****): file mbox-save.c: line 280 (mbox_save_init_file): assertion failed: (mbox->mbox_lock_type != F_RDLCK) Some of them also have something to do with storage space. Any ideas at all? First, thanks to Timo for the patch -- fixed missing protocol name error on my Solaris box. Now, I've moved the whole distro, part and parcel, to a Centos 4.0 Linux box, with the HOPE of getting it working there. But when I've set all of it up, I get the error message, mentioned in the 'Subject' line, in my /var/log/dovecot file. Any clues? PEV

Hi guys and girls, I am having a problem with Dovecot. It seems like it's the dovecot auth daemon that is locking up(I'm guessing) I am running SuSe 9.3 Pro, and Dovecot 0.99.14 Everything works perfectly for a few days, and then eventually I end up with tons of what look to be "stale" processes.(I'm guessing roughly 300 like below.) 4204 ? S 0:00 dovecot-auth 24722 ? S 0:00 pop3-login 24723 ? S 0:00 pop3-login 24724 ? S 0:00 dovecot-auth 24921 ? S 0:00 dovecot-auth When I "telnet 127.0.0.1 110" I get a login, and I can type "User blabla" I get an "OK" then I type in "pass blabla" and then I don't get any response, and I have to kill my session with "Ctrl ]" and then "quit". I am using both POP3 and IMAP, but it seems to be only the POP3 daemon that dies. There are roughly 60 users on the network, and it dies after roughly 5 days of usage, and I then have to restart Dovecot by running /etc/init.d/dovecot stop and then start Any help would be appreciated. [Dovecot] new to dovecot

Hello all I'm new to dovecot (and imap in general!) having installed only only today. My current set up is exim as MTA with procmail delivering /var/spool/mail/%user (which gets nfs exported). We also have a pop3 server running as well. I'm moving to new machine and though I'd look at dovecot and squirrelmail. In /etc/dovecot.conf I'm confused by the default_mail_env, what exactly are we trying to set here? We have $MAIL set already, so for example what does the line: default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u try to set Cheers John

[Dovecot] Same email recieved

Some of my users seem to be receiving the same e-mail over and over. This doesn't happen all the time, just once in a while it seems to get stuck in a loop. Is it possible that dovecot is the culprit here or is this a problem with something else? I'm running Postfix/amavisd/dovecot on Slackware 10.1. Regards, Savage

Hi, I'm sure this is a bug fixed in CVS or something stupid I did in the config but here goes: I am getting at least one complaint a day about POP login customers getting 'Message not found' errors while getting their mail. The only thing I can find in the messages that could be related is: Oct 12 15:40:18 svr21 dovecot: pop3(user): Mailbox init failed top=0/0, retr=0/ del=0/0, size=0 It doesn't happen on a very high percentage of logins which makes me think its a locking problem of some kind. Any ideas? [Dovecot] dovecot won't launch

Hi, I downloaded the latest dovecot (1.0 alpha 3) and tried numerous installs which get me nothing. No errors, no crashes, no segfaults and no running dovecot. It just seems to silently exit. I was trying to build with mysql support but I've also tried a plain old install, just configure, make install, etc. I get nada. strace doesn't show anything, at least as far as I can tell. No messages are logged. No output to the console. Any ideas? My only guess, no idea if it matters, is that dovecot doesn't like the fact that this is a VPS (User Mode Linux, Fedora Core 3). But I don't see any reason why not, other mail servers are pretty happy... I know with my fileserver i do weekly full backup and daily incremental which would file on those type of files. Ok, so if anyone runs into a problem where dovecot reports chdir(/home/BLAH) failed with uid NNN: Permission denied in Fedora Core 4 or otherwise, it seems to be a SELinux problem. Turn OFF SELinux and the problem goes away.

[Dovecot] time out error and email with attachments

I'm facing some problem with emails and attachments. I'm not sure it's dealing with MTU (it is set to the maximum number before a fragmentation occurs). I have no errors from pop3, but the following message is the best I can show you just to understand my problem. The log shows this: "imap(roberto.cipollini(a)allmediasolution.com): Oct 04 17:35:03 Error: Timeout while waiting for release of exclusive fcntl() lock for index file /mail/allmediasolution.com/roberto.cipollini/.INBOX/.imap.index " I think that the pop3 process is locking the index file (thunderbird was waiting to download the file) and the imap (i tried to get the file from webmail) is going time out. Can anyone tell me how to fix the time out? any suggestion? do you need more information/logs? can I try different setting in dovecot conf? thanks for any kind of help. Roberto

Hi there, Upgrading to Fedora Core 4 from an old server running Red Hat 7.3. I'm moving accounts over by hand, and I'm having the following error crop up for *everyone*. chdir(/home/BLAH) failed with uid 500: Permission denied Now, that UID is correct, the user has that access, and there are no permissions problems changing to that directory. I've got the mail in /var/mail/XXX for each user as a simple mbox. I was browsing through the code to check for what *exactly* dovecot is doing when it's trying to change directory there. The error reporting is a bit spotty. It could be that it can't change to that directory (unlikely). It could be that something in that path is a problem (also unlikely, as the /home directory is world readable and executable), or, it could have something to do with a file or directory it's trying to create. I'm not sure. Could someone let me in on what files or directories that dovecot tries to create by default? This permission denied error doesn't make any sense (I created a brand new user with nothing there, made all of his directories readable/writeable, and executable by EVERYONE, and it STILL gives me this error.

I upgraded dovecot from 0.99.20050712-2 to 1.0.alpha3-1 (Debian testing). Hey All, Id just like to start by thanking Timo Sirainen and any others that helped produce such a great IMAP server, it was a breeze to set up with no previous experience in mail servers. What I am trying to do is setup a spare computer to run Dovecot and that It stores all my email from my accounts which are all accessed through POP. This way instead of being tied to one mail client (and hence OS and Computer) I just set up my mail client to access Dovecot and then I'm done. So I am trying to set up an IMAP server to store my emails instead of just storing them on my local hard disk really. Now so far Ive set up Dovecot and Its working fine, but How would I get my email accounts mail to be placed in the Inbox of my IMAP account? I'm think I would need to use either fetchmail or getmail to grab my mail. After that do these programs just save it in the appropriate IMAP folder on disk (which would be new?) or do I need a MTA such as qmail setup and fetchmail or getmail passes the email to the MTA which just transfers it locally on the same computer? So any help would be greatly appreciated as well as advice on which software to use, the getmail site attacks fetchmail quite strongly, but I'm not sure of its performance being written in Python as I'm running on an old Pentium MMX(100MHz) using OpenBSD 3.7. After installing alpha3, when I view a list of my IMAP mailboxes in Pine 4.64 on Linux, several of the mailbox names are followed by odd characters: ., ~, and _. So the list of mailboxes looks like: INBOX saved_ sent-mail~ Biz Service. Home_ and so forth. The distribution of the characters remains the same throughout the Pine session, but is different every time I restart Pine. It doesn't happen in Pine 4.63 or any other client, but I associate it with Dovecot rather than Pine because it started exactly when I upgraded Dovecot today, rather than five days ago when I upgraded Pine. I am using dovecot with vpopmail and qmail and problems is percent hack that works with qmail-pop3d does not work with dovecot. So login works like that: firstname.lastname%domain.ext I need that function to work with dovecot too, and I am using stable 0.99.x series of dovecot. Problem is that some Apple machines client can't use at-symbol in their login names. So, where I need to hack sources to convert % -> @ to get login working. I recently set up an OpenBSD - Dovecot mail server for a client. Naturally (according to Murphy's Law) they want to use Outlook 2003, pop3s, and leave messages on the server. And just as naturally, the UIDLs don't seem to be working, and when they download mail, they get EVERY email stored on the server, not just the new ones. Other than switching them over to IMAP, I found the following in the Wiki documentation: #POP3 UIDL format to use. hi all, i've exim 4.53RC2 + dovecot-cvs on OSX 10.4.2. i'm working on implementing recipient-delimiters for delivery from exim to a user's imap store using dovecot's cvs-lda. reading on the wiki (Jakob's latest comments?): " ... the part after the delimiter is passed to the lda as an additional parameter. so dovecot-lda should handle that parameter and leave the separator handling to the MTA. I've been trying to get dovecot working with postfix with virtual domain setting. I noticed that if I started dovecot with "sudo /usr/sbin/dovecot", everything would work fine. But if I started with "sudo /etc/init.d/dovecot start", I would get the following permission error. I checked "ps -ef | grep dovecot" and didn't find anything different. [Dovecot] Using procmail with virtual users...

Hello all, I've a working dovecot installation on my machine, using exim3, virtual users and maildirs. I would like to add procmailrc rules for these (virtual) users, but i've not succeeded with that. The authentication is done with a passwd-file looking like this : testuser:password:uid:gid::/home/mail/testuser::chroot:maildir:/home/mail/testuser/Maildir/ i've put .procmailrc files in /home/mail/testuser/.procmailrc, but it this not taken into account, because the MTA never calls the procmail router as it resides after the dovecot one. How is the proper way of using procmail with virtual user (and is it at least possible) ? Thanks, -- Arnaud

I have a couple of questions regarding the default dovecot packaged with RedHat ES 4. The dovecot version is 0.99.11-2.EL4.1 which I assume is considerably behind the current stable version of 0.99.14. Is it the fact that I am using an older version of dovecot that SSHA passwords in an openldap directory are not recognized and give the following error: dovecot-auth: Unknown password scheme SMD5 ? LDAP is working as expected for NFS maildirs. I have dovecot 0.99.13 working on fedora core 3, but the stability of fedora leaves much to be desired and would like to get a stable, low maintenance install of dovecot on an enterprise supported linux. Redhat does not have packages for 0.99.14 and I would rather compile from source if possible. I've specified --with-ldap as part of the configure script, but am wondering if there is anything more to add to support SSHA passwords. Until dovecot 1.0 is proven in the field, it is not a consideration for the production environment this server is being used for. Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. [Dovecot] Can't connect to auth server at default: Connection refused

We've being running with Dovecot 1.0-stable since Tuesday, and on the whole it's gone very well (meaning nobody's noticed!). My best estimate is we're using half the disk accesses and 2/3 the CPU of UW-IMAP/Qpopper. We've quite a mixture of error messages in the logs, the most worrying of which is that several times we've had a few seconds of "xxx-login: Can't connect to auth server at default: Connection refused" (where xxx is pop or imap). It seems to sort itself out shortly afterwards. We're using userdb=passwd, passdb=passwd (authenticating via NIS). From Tuesday we'll be using passdb=pam (pam_ldap to Active Directory). My first guess is that some dovecot-auth process stops responding and gets killed off. Is this right? Other errors we're seeing include 1) pread_full() failed with mbox file /export/mail/c/37/sau04djp/INBOX: No such file or directory (when there is!) 2) mbox sync: UID inserted in the middle of mailbox (especially with .prayer folders - configuration folders for our Webmail) 3) file mbox-lock.c: line 505 (mbox_lock): assertion failed: (lock_type == F_RDLCK || ibox->mbox_lock_type != F_RDLCK) presumably some of these are fixed in alpha2. I've only just subscribed to the list, but in reading through the back-issues have come across a bug with dovecot-lda that was reported previously, and I can reproduce. Using dovecot-lda CVS with Revision 1.21 of deliver.c (as newer versions won't compile against 1.0-alpha3), with dovecot 1.0-alpha3 and postfix 2.1.5 Rredirects mangle some headers - the 'To:' header ends up as: To: undisclosed-recipients: ; And there is no subject header. Running sendmail from the cmdline with: sendmail -i -f '<>' -- destination at address.com <msgtext> as suggested to test by *Timo Sirainen *results in a correctly formatted message. The mail_send_forward function in mail-send.c looks sane from what I can see, but then I'm not a C coder... Any clues guys? Cheers, Pete

[Dovecot] Maildir and counting inodes

I've been testing with alpha 3 and I am about ready to go production. I am switching from mbox to maildir and I'd like to know if there is a formula or rule of thumb for determining if your file system will have enough inodes to handle all the mail message files. I could write a script to look at each user's mbox files, count the number messages and calculate the average number of emails per user, then add a fudge factor for expected growth. However, I doubt anybody actually goes to this much trouble to plan ahead. Or do they? I'm running Solaris 9 and when I created the file system I just used the defaults. If I need to change anything, I'd rather do it before going production. Thanks for any info you can provide on this subject.

hi all, has anyone had any success in getting the current dovecot cvs-lda's implementation of CyrusSIEVE responding to a ManageSIEVE client? in particular, i'm hoping that one can use, e.g., Mulberry's Client- & Server-side sieve editor: <http://www.cyrusoft.com/sieve/sievescreens.html> if i telnet to my dovecot box's sieve port ( = 2000) i get no response at all ... telnet localhost 2000 Trying 127.0.0.1... telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused telnet: Unable to connect to remote host net-stat shows nothing on port 2000, and, afaik, there's no mention of a server on the wiki ... so i'm either doing something wrong, or "it" is simply not there. has a sieve server been implemented? any plans? thx! richard

But I found that I must add the mail=mbox:/var/spool/virtual/%d/%n part. Without this part, the dovecot seems not checking the right location of mail spool and simply say that "no new email". Now I added this part together with "home=/tmp" part into userdb config and It works now with IMAP folder in /tmp directory. But I want to ask if there is any file locking problem as I am running virtual email with vmail as owner for all mbox accounts. And it seems that they are all share the same IMAP folder located in /tmp directory.

(I am sorry to bother the list with something I should have verified myself right now - I simply do not have access to the source code here) Thinking of some limit I wanted to put with authentication, I am wondering - when Dovecot authenticates a user using PAM, now that (in 1.0) it passes the rhost item to PAM, it passes a hostname, not an IP address. Does it double-verify the DNS record before it trusts this to be the hostname (first checking the IP address in in_addr.arpa and then checking that the hostname indeed maps back to the same IP address)? That is necessary in order to trust the client address when determining authentication strength in the PAM module based on the client location (specifically we want stronger authentication when the client comes outside of our network, while inside a plain password suffices), as else anybody could "spoof" the hostname by changing the IN PTR record of his IP address to point back to some "trusted" hostname (given he has control of the DNS zone his host is in, which is completely possible given the server knows nothing about it). I did the following test: Sent an email to some other server(yahoo.com)->email got there fine. >From that other server(yahoo.com) replaied-> to the new server and email got there fine,checked using pine. Now in x windows on the mail server if i lunch email client software and set up the account, then i can send and receive emails fine so pop3 is working. But when i go to different machine like PC set up outlook then i cannot receive emails. I get error in outlook that the connection has failed. So i telnet 192.168.1.10 110 and I have gotten response from the server 250 dovecot OK. I really dont what to do at this time. I have been trying couple different things without any luck..... need some help? Mike

I've tried turning on mbox_very_dirty_syncs for myself (and a few other brave souls running 1.0-alpha3 rather than 1.0-stable) again to see what perfomance gain it gives (see thread http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2005-July/007956.html) Now we aren't running UW-IMAP at all, how safe is mbox_very_dirty_syncs assuming the only other process writing to mailboxes is our MTA (exim) which simply appends messages to the end? Is it safer still using Dovecot 1.0-alphas and the LDA? Does it matter if there are concurrent connections to the mailbox? Updated version. The previous one was a bit too complicated with flag updates for pretty minimal benefits. Changes: - writing/reading mail flags can be disabled to get better performance without it requiring any changes to how the files are normally handled (so mixed more works fine). - writing flags now requires getting shared locks. so there's the overhead of locking but flag writers don't have to wait for each others. - reading requires no locking anymore. the comment in the previous version about reading only half a mail being a problem doesn't actually matter, since if a client tries to read an expunged mail Dovecot already disconnects the client immediately (since most clients can't handle such situation well anyway). - no more problems with mailbox readers locking out expungers - note about fcntl() locking being able to provide even higher concurrency - works just fine with plain dotlocks, so works fine with NFS And looks like I forgot to explain the "mail header padding" before. I'm not exactly sure if it's useful or not, but it doesn't hurt to have it there if it's wanted. The idea was anyway that if you're writing more than one flag at a time, having a 512 byte padding would make sure that when writing the few bytes the OS will only have to read one sector from disk (512 bytes in all todays OSes I believe?) to get the non-written parts of the sector instead of possibly reading two sectors. So it might help with trading disk reads for some wasted disk space. Generic ------- The point is to have a mailbox format where the mailbox can consist of one or more files. Grouping multiple files in a single file makes it faster to read, but it's slower to expunge mails from the beginning of the file. So this format would allow sysadmin to specify rules on how large the files would be allowed to grow. Index File ---------- Named "index". Index file gives a mapping between UIDs <-> filenames: Header: <uidvalidity> <last-used-uid> Record: <uid-first> <uid-last> <filename> Record: .. eg.: 1127468129 5 1 3 msg.1 4 4 msg.4 All of the UIDs don't have to actually exist in the file if they have been expunged. The record should be removed once all of the UIDs have been removed from it (and the file itself been deleted). The same file may appear multiple times in the index. For example: 1 2 msg.1 3 3 msg.3 4 5 msg.1 This means that UIDs 1, 2, 4 and 5 are in file msg.1, but UID 3 is in file msg.3. The filename doesn't matter as long as it's unique, but probably wouldn't hurt to include its first UID in the filename so humans can find mails more easily. The filename however must not end with ".lock". The file is modified by creating first exclusively owned "index.lock" file, updating it and then rename()ing it over the index file. This lock file shouldn't be held for a long time, so if it exists, and it doesn't get modified at all within 30 seconds, it can be overwritten. Before rename()ing over the index file, you should check with stat() that the index.lock file is still the same as you expect it to be (in case your process was temporarily stopped for over 30 secs). The index file's mtime timestamp must grow after each modification. This makes it easy to check if new mail has been added to the mailbox. Mail File --------- File header: Bytes Format Description 8 hex Header size 16 hex Append offset 4 hex Mail header size 4 hex Mail header padding 4 hex Keyword count in mail headers Mail header: Bytes Format Description 8 hex UID 16 hex Mail size 1 1/0 Answered flag 1 1/0 Flagged flag 1 1/0 Deleted flag 1 1/0 Seen flag 1 1/0 Draft flag 1 1/0 Expunged flag n 1/0 Keywords The file layout then goes: <File header> - possible padding due to Header size <Mail header #1> - possible padding due to Mail header size <Mail data #1> - possible padding due to Mail header padding (ie. next Mail header's offset is divisible with Mail header padding) <Mail header #2> etc.. The UIDs must be ascending within the file (but as said above, some UIDs between them may exist in other files). If mail has been marked with expunged-flag, it should be treated as if it was already expunged. The mail will really be expunged later in some nightly run. Reading the files requires no locking. If while reading you happen to hit unexpected end of file, it means that mails were expunged from the file. After that you'll look at the index file again to see which file the mail went and continue from there on. If the mail isn't found, it means it got expunged. Expunging happens by locking the file and then copying all non-expunged mails after the first expunged one to new file. Then update the index file with the new location for the UIDs, and at last ftruncate() at the position of first expunged mail in the original file. Flag updates require locking the file as well, otherwise we might try to write past the end of file when another process is expunging the mails. Shared locking can be used for flag update locking since each flag update can be atomically changed by writing one byte. Appending mails can be done by either locking existing file and appending to it, or creating a new file. If appending to a new file, create it with .lock suffix and then check that the file without .lock wasn't already just created to prevent race conditions. When appending to existing file, check "Append offset" from file's header. If that offset is at the end of file, just append there. Otherwise read the mail's header from there. If it has a non-zero UID and index file says that the same UID exists in this file, jump over the mail and do the same checks for all the rest of the mails in the file. Once the check doesn't match or you reach EOF, update the append offset in the header to that offset and write your mail there. Initially write the UID in mail's header as zeroes ('0', not NUL). Once the append is completely finished, you'll have to update it with the new UID. You'll do this by locking index file, reading the latest last-used-uid and using the next value for your UID. Once you've written it, rewrite the index file with updated last-used-uid field and your UID added to it. After this, update the append offset in the mail file and unlock it. If fcntl() locking is used, locking only specific ranges can give more concurrency. Flag updates only need to lock the part of the file they're modifying. Expunges need to lock the part which it's removing. Appending needs to lock from <end of file-1> to end of file (ie. l_len=0). Keywords file ------------- Named "index.keywords". This contains mappings between keyword numbers and names. TODO: write how it's updated Recent file ----------- "index.recent.<uid>" file tells what the last non-recent UID was. The file doesn't have any data inside it. When opening the mailbox you should find and rename() the existing index.recent.<uid> file to the new index.recent.<last-uid>. A successful rename() means the mails between <uid>+1 .. <last-uid> are recent for you. A failed rename() means that someone else managed to do it. You should look for the file again and if it was renamed to less than <last-uid>, you should try again. Nightly cleanups ---------------- Because expunged mails may be left lying around for a while, there probably should be some nightly check that cleans them up. Other cleanups that may be necessary after crashes are: - .lock files - expunged data at the end of files (can be checked with same rules as how appending determines the offset where to append) Alternative ways to use ----------------------- Expunging mails isn't very filesystem quota friendly since it requires creating another file to copy the expunged mails to. This could also be done by just moving the data within the file. This however requires that all file reads must also be shared-locked. Also it has the problem of leaving the mailbox corrupted if the copying gets aborted in the middle. For the best performance the mail flags could be stored only in Dovecot's index files. In that case the flag update locking isn't slowing down expunges (and if fcntl() locks can't be used, doesn't slow down appends either). Also there's no need for keywords/recent files. Compatibility ------------- If needed, it would be possible to create new/ and tmp/ directories under the mailbox to allow mail deliveries to be in maildir format. The maildir files would be then either just moved or maybe be appended to existing mail files.

[Dovecot] Mail directory funkiness

I am using dovecot-0.99.14-4.fc4 on FC4, was testing using mbox and than switched to using Maildir. default_mail_env = maildir:~/Maildir >From evolution when I create a folder the folder is created in ~/mail instead of ~/Maildir I am still rather new to dovecot, but this does not make sense. I made sure to restart dovecot, even added a .procmailrc. cat .procmailrc MAILDIR=/home/tedkaz/Maildir :0 ./ I am going to grab the latest version and test with that, but if if anyone has insight into how I got here it would be appreciated :-) Likely a pilot error. [Dovecot] Misbehavior with Dovecot and Mulberry

I'm having a bit of misbehavior wherein Dovecot seems to refuse to cooperate with my Mulberry MUA. By and large, everything works great. I can move mail back and forth happily. I can compose a note and copy the outgoing mail to my Dovecot "Sent" folder using my default Mulberry settings. But if I reply or forward a mail, I get a Mulberry error popup saying that it "couldn't decode the response from the server" and that the operation was unsuccessful. This was somewhat mystifying (especially since this does work for a newly composed message as opposed to a reply/forward), so I turned on Mulberry logging. This is what I see (with unrelated operations clipped from the log). First, the first case where I create a new message, send it, and save a copy in my Sent folder: --> #6.3408 Mon Sep 5 23:24:27 2005 A00085 APPEND Sent (\Seen) {418+} * 5544 EXISTS * 1 RECENT A00085 OK Append completed. All's well there. Mulberry does a FETCH to grab the new message (reply) from my Sent folder and then does a SORT so that it can order it properly in the display. This too succeeds but is probably irrelevant to us. After a couple NOOP commands come and go in the background, I try to reply to a message in one of my mailboxes. In this case it happens to be the one in my Sent folder. So Mulberry issues a FETCH (you can see the original mail there in the FETCH response from Dovecot). It then does a STORE of the original mail, apparently to update the \Answered flag. It then tries to APPEND the reply to the Sent folder, but this time, the server comes back with a NO. All my folders are maildir at this point -- I've converted them out of my UW mbx format store. My client is Mulberry 3.1.6 for Windows and the OS is AIX 5.1. This weird behavior is a mystery to me!

[Dovecot] Problems with alpha3 + openssl-0.9.8

Has anybody successfully compiled alpha 3 with the newly released openssl-0.9.8? I just wasted the weekend trying to get dovecot to compile using the new openssl libs. Openssl-0.9.7d works like dream. Just wanted to know if anybody had this combo working.

Sorry this took even longer than I thought but they should be arriving in unstable this afternoon. I also have a backport for stable available at http://www.braincells.com/backports This directory is not aptable so manually install the packages for now. (Hopefully backports.org will have their sarge repository open soon. When that happens they will move there.) The configuration file format has changed so you will want to carefully check /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf when upgrading. I forgot to put a note about that in NEWS.debian sorry. I think I might have forgotten a couple of config file tweaks people have suggested and in general, if you sent me mail in the past month or so and I didn't respond or the problem still isn't fixed, please give me a nudge. This is why you really ought to use the Debian bug tracking system rather than mailing the maintainer. Anyway, enjoy. -- Jaldhar H. we are currently using vm-pop3d to implement virtual domains. But due to some locking problem in vm-pop3d, we want to test the possibility to change to dovecot. Currently, in vm-pop3d, the passwd file is located in /etc/virtual/domain1.com/passwd /etc/virtual/domain2.com/passwd and the passwd format is: user: md5 encrpted password and the email is store in /var/spool/virtual/domain1.com/user /var/spool/virtual/domain2.com/user and we login as user(a)domain1.com, user(a)domain2.com . We want to maintain this format as login id and the password format. What should be changed in dovecot.conf? Thanks.

i can't find a trace of any sieve mgmt services in dovecot as yet, and haven't found anything in this list ... so, if i *am* missing it, if someone would be kind enuf to point me in the right direction, i'd appreciate it! 8-} in the meantime, a little more info for those interested ... the latest spec for sieve management, "A Protocol for Remotely Managing Sieve Scripts", can be found at: <http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-martin-managesieve-05.txt> iiuc, one of the authors, Tim Martin / Mirapoint Inc., is the "Tim" of "timsieved" -- Cyrus' ManageSIEVE 'server' bundled with cyrus-imap. i can strip timesieved it out of a successful build of cyrus-imap, but it seems to be dependent on cyrus-sasl ... as such, i'm not sure how to integrate it with dovecot's SASL auth methods. i have a feeling that such fuctionality would have to be re-implemented in dovecot alongside of sieve itself ... and probably should, if it were to be included. the courier-imap mailing lists also have folks searching for an alternative to timsieved ... richard

Hello, I have set up postfix to use dove-cot lda. This works perfect. Sieve works a bit... I would like to user the redirect feature of sieve. Hie all, I am new to both Dovecot and this list. I am trying to set up a Dovecot and Sendmail mail server with OpenLDAP user database for authentication. The sendmail setup is working fine, but authentication for Dovemail is not working. [Dovecot] Fatal: EOF reading environment from master

I have been running dovecot as an imap server since 22nd July 2005. The server was started from xinetd using /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-auth The sever run successfully until the machine was shut down in a power outage on 12 Aug 2005. Dovecot has failed to start since the reboot. When starting it with the imap-auth it gives the following error: fatal: EOF reading environment from master I have uninstalled dovecot, downloaded, compiled, and installed the stable of 14Aug 2005 and got the same error. I then installed the 0.99.14 version ang got the same error. Hello, I'm trying to set up dovecot as the delivery agent for postfix. Hello Timo, I'm curious about 2 points (I'm using alpha2 but these are general questions) : Background : . I connect to dovecot-1.0.alpha2 through thunderbird . I use ldap pass/userdb and PLAIN mech . I've only got one auth block in dovecot.conf (all pass/userdb/mech except ldap/PLAIN are commented) 1) I notice that, for one thunderbird connection trial, imap-login issues 2 AUTH messages. Why ? What info does the "resp=" hold the second time ? I'm a bit too busy nowadays because of school so I haven't had time to look at everyone's bug reports and some other mails. They're still marked as unread in my mailbox, so hopefully I'll get to them soon. And I don't mind you resend them if I don't answer in a few weeks :) Changes: - Fixed maildir syncing errors about wrong UIDs - Maildir was re-read all the time, even if we knew nothing had changed there - SSL/TLS connections used to have extra ~0.2s latencies because kernel was waiting for more data before sending it (at least with Linux). Fixed it by corking/uncorking before/after sending. I don't think the socket latencies are this bad normally though, I should probably look more into it if we're setting some socket flags badly (or does it happen specifically because we were using corking for the socket before SSL and kernel increased the timeouts because it thinks we're going to be using corking?). - Marking index file corrupted caused its recreation to still use old transaction log file, which usually caused the index to get corrupted again - Added --build-options parameter to dovecot binary (by Andrey Panin) - Parse obs-phrase correctly in mail address parser (by Chris Wakelin)

[Dovecot] dovecot with ssl only works on foreground mode

Hi, I've set up dovecot to use imaps/pops with certificates that I signed with my own CA. When I try to start it using service dovecot start it fails. I've tried disabling imaps in the config file and it starts fine so it seems it's the certificate part of the config. If,however, I start it with '/usr/sbin/dovecot -F' or even '/usr/sbin/dovecot' it starts! I've looked over the dovecot startup script but, can't seem to see anything that would hinder startup. Hi, I'm planning to migrate from dovecot/mbox to dovecot/maildir both using imap. I have read that when using the Maildir storage format, all folders are stored under the INBOX. Is this true in dovecot too? I want to have a configuration like the current: - new mail is delivered in /var/mail/USER - user folders are in /home/USER/mail I want to ask if this is posible in dovecot? Hi, I'm trying to get dovecot set up better. I am using 1.0alpha3. It takes a long long time to move messages for some reason. It seems it may be a timeout thing, because neither the client or server is using any cpu time or disk i/o or network to speak of. (To move maybe 400 messages, it seems to take maybe half an hour, maybe longer.) With alpha 2 I was getting messages from Thunderbird saying that the server was unable to move messages, would I like to continue. I haven't seen any of these lately, but when I updated to alpha3 I also made some dovecot.conf changes. I'm running this on OS X with a 450 MHz cube with 1.2 Gig of ram and a 7200 RPM hard drive. I have a lot of rules that move messages to various mailboxes and I get a lot of mail, so this is important to me. I have a very large Maildir set of mailboxes (about 40 of them with up to 70,000 messages in each mailbox). I have finally got it so that it will load the mailbox headers pretty quickly in Thunderbird. It takes about 15 to 30 seconds to load a message, but that is acceptable to me. Here is my dovecot.conf. [Dovecot] signing dovecot certs with own Cert. Auth.

Hi, I'm trying to get apache, sendmail , and dovecot to use SSL certs signed by my own CA. I've got the apache certs working fine. However, dovecot ( I haven't even tried sendmail yet) doesn't seem to accept any of the certificates that I create for it. There is a script that comes with dovecot that creates self-signed certificates for you but, I need certificates signed by my own CA. I found this tutorial http://homepage.mac.com/pauljlucas/personal/macmini/certs.html it shows you how to create a csr for dovecot that you can send to a CA. I signed it using CA.pl -sign. however, the certificate isn't accepted by dovecot. Unfortunately, dovecot doesn't log anything to maillog at failed startup. Just looking at the certificate contents I noticed that the self-signed certificates don't have all kinds of publisher information at the beginning of them like the apache certs. So I think what I'm missing is the difference between all the different cert types. I know that there are pem and cert ssl cert types, at least different extensions. Can anyone tell my what the difference is? are the certs suitable for apache and others for mail applications? is there a converter? Could it be the way that I'm signing the certificates? [Dovecot] Lost transaction log file in alpha2

I had run alpha1 pretty uneventfully for several weeks. I upgraded to alpha2 a couple of days ago and have since suffered two incidents of "Lost transaction log", resulting in the client being unable to access the mailbox until I "rm dovecot.index.log*" Sep 14 10:48:35 caddy dovecot: imap(jberry): Lost transaction log file /Users/jberry/Maildir/dovecot.index.log seq 1 I should point out that this is a server with a single imap user (myself) and that I know only one imap client was trying to access the server at that point in time (though the client sw Mail.app may have had multiple connections to the server). Any suggestions/ideas/thoughts on whether something might have changed in alpha2 to start causing this? James.

Hey, I'm doing a setup of dovecot (cvs) + postfix + dovecot lda (cvs). Is there any solution to the /var/run/dovecot/auth-master access restrictions, prohibiting the user running dovecot-deliver from communicating with the master (aside from the dirty and unsafe hack to reset the permissions of the /var/run/dovecot dir after starting dovecot)? [Dovecot] Can't donwload mails with some attacchments

Hi. Does anyone find the same problem with attachments bigger than few Ks? The client (thunderbird) waits for the file to be downloaded. It can be waiting for several minuts and tryies before having it from dovecot. Can it be something against the lock of the file, the processes or something else? Any workaround or bugfix in the stable/alpha rel? thanks. L.

I changed servers at the same time as changing from Alpha1 to Alpha2 but I'm on a faster server so it should be faster. But it seems slower especially deleting server side messages. Using mbox . Anyone else seeing tis?

[Dovecot] Basic namespaces question

I can't find a generalised "What the heck are namespaces all about?" anywhere, can anyone point me to a decent one? More directly, my question is this: if I set up two non-hidden private namespaces (one for mbox and one for maildir), will a well-written IMAP client automagically list folders from both as if they were part of (or below) the same hierarchy, or do I have to set up two accounts, one with a prefix of (say) #mbox and one of #maildir? One step further, I'd like to eventually get mail from /var/mail/%u in mbox format, and in "maildir:%h/.maildir" or "mbox:%h/.mail", whichever exists (I'm migrating from imap-uw, and would like the benefits of maildir without forcing users to change their mailstores in case they use pop3 or tools like mail(1)). I'm willing to do some coding for it, but I imagine that it would be non-trivial if namespaces aren't automatically integrated
