[Dovecot] Do index files need removing when upgrading 1.0-stable to 1.0-alpha1 or later?

Hi Timo, Just a quick question: do index files still need removing when upgrading from 1.0-stable (as in the testXX series) or will Dovecot regenerate them automatically? I'm expecting to go with 1.0-stable on Tuesday for my 20,000 users (as that's what I've been testing), but if we see lots of index issues, I may want to upgrade to alpha1 (or later) fairly soon afterwards and it would be annoying to have do delete thousands of indexes! [Dovecot] 1.0alpha1: stack frame core

Hi, Today's core dump from 1.0alpha1 came from a syslog message of: IMAP(user): pool_data_stack_realloc(): stack frame changed gdb info on the resulting core dump attached. Question: how many people are building/using dovecot 1.0alpha1 with gcc 4.0.1 versus gcc 3.4.x? I am wondering if these issues come from the compiler instead of dovecot itself? Hi, I have seen the following in my syslogs for 1.0alpha1: Corrupted index cache file [filename]: record points outside file and : indexid changed : record list is circular : Cache record offset 9772 points outside file : invalid record size Are these errors minor? I searched for these errors on the web and maillists and about the "LF not found", it seems a problem related to dovecot versions older than v0.99.10.5, but my version is 0.99.14-r1. Any ideas? [Dovecot] subscriptions or .subscriptions?

I may have found a problem with the documentation concerning the subscriptions file. On the Dovecot web site there is a document that outlines the conversion from UW IMAP to Dovecot. The document says Dovecot's folder list is stored in ".subscriptions" However, I have found that Dovecot's folder list is really "subscriptions" without the preceding dot. Help... Dovecot 1.0alpha1 hung up today with nothing working and the following spewing to my syslog: pipe() failed: Too many open files My setup: Solaris 9, just using imap, mbox format. The various "max" settings in dovecot.conf use the defaults. Suggestions on what to change in fovecot.conf to keep this from happening? Jeff Earickson Colby College

Hello, I have noticed a weird behaviour in dovecot 0.99 which, I hope, is not replicated in 1.0-alpha. First I have to say that it works very well. So if I login with user foo(a)bar.com, the maildir is created. But when I log in with User FOO(a)BAR.COM, or FOO(a)BAR.com, then two other maildirs are created. Authentication is ok (I'm using mysql backend) but no mails are obviously found. Maybe a solutions would be adding some config item to turn lowercase the maildir path or authentication tokens (received from client) at login time. Or maybe I am missing something. Is there a solution for this problem out there ? Thanks, Massimo

Hi,all I have a POP3 problem about multi users from one IP address concurrent. [Issue description] The network architecture is as following. I have setup a mail server(sendmail/dovecot) in PlaceA with IP_A. And about 6 users are receving mail from the same IP_B( NATed public IP) in PlaceB. Their mails are many( about 1Mb/hour each) and ususally set fetch time as 10min/fetch. Then they complain that their mails often cannot be downloaded. [Reason investigation] I noticed that 1.when one of them fail to fetch mail. All TCP IP connection between IP_A and IP_B will be RST.which means that http/ssh/pop/smtp all not work for a while. And after about 10 minute, the http/ssh can work well. 2.I have asked them to backup and delete pop accounts and use webmail through imap provided by dovecot.And that seems work well but inefficient. I think this maybe because of multi users from one IP address concurrent, [Question] Would you pls provide some suggestion or solution about this issue? [Dovecot] Fatal: EOF while reading environment from master Error

Hello all! I guess it's a standard reason for joining a mailing list, but I have a problem. For some reason, whenever I try to start dovecot, be it from the xinet.d or from the commandline, I get this rather bizzare error. I can't even work out what it means, so I can't even begin to debug it. There is nothing extra in /var/log/messages, so I'm out of ideas. I've tried it with the default config, as well as with a config that I adjusted to fit the environment. I'm currently out of ideas. I did notice that there is a brief thread on this in the mailing-list archive, but it doesn't seem to point to a solution. Hopefully someone can help. I'm running it with the command /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login I am using the 1.0.alpha1 version, running on RedHat AS 3. thanks in advance. [Dovecot] Lot of crashing messages

[Dovecot] Dovecot-alpha1 and Thunderbird Sent problems

I have dovecot 1.0alpha1 setup in a semi test environment running on Solaris 2.6. When using Thunderbird 1.0.6 from Windows occasionally the client will hang after sending a message and before copying it to the Sent folder on dovecot. Sendmail logs indicate that the message has been sent correctly. The mail directory is not shared over NFS. It is in maildir format. Restarting Thunderbird and sending exactly the same message will work. This seems to imply that it is not message dependant. Once the error has occured once it continues to occur until the client is restarted. We have file system quotas however they are very large for a very small amount of mail. The filesystem is about 80% free space and about 98% free inodes. I cannot replicate the issue under Linux using Thunderbird that is current for FC3. Some hacked version 1.0.2-1.3.3 Imap workarounds turned on under dovecot are outlook-idle for imap. The issue has not been seen under Outlook. Outlook is using a local Sent-Items folder instead of an Imap one however. The connection is running over SSL so I can not sniff the traffic on the wire, I have not tried using the rawlog settings yet. I plan to start this now, however the sporadic nature of the problem may delay useful information from here. The dovecot logs are not showing error messages, just: dovecot: Sep 09 09:24:35 Info: imap-login: Login: user=.... TLS Any suggestions on where to start would be great. I recompiled from source and just replaced the dovecot binary in /usr/sbin. Trying to do 'rpmbuild -tb' and install the resulting rpm rendered everything unusable, but I guess that's just a matter of tweaking some options to 'configure'. Hi, I have a dovecot IMAP server whit the Horde/Imp webmail. I know that this request is OT, but I need an help. [Dovecot] Ip addr + login name

Hi everybody, Is there a way to bind client ip address that connects to pop3 with the login name? For example if the client ip address is 192.168.2.40 then his login name is 'test' and he can log in with only that account name. I think it is possible to do it with an external authentication program. Thanks.

Hi all - I'm brand new to dovecot (0.99.14 on freebsd 5) and am just playing with it a bit. POP works just fine, but the only thing that shows up in my logs is this: Sep 7 11:46:25 freebsd5 pop3-login: Login: philip [10.28.61.200] Thought maybe syslog was quietly eating things, but told dovecot to use it's own log file and it didn't improve. Is there a way to turn on more detailed logging about what the user did? Along the lines of what uw-imap's pop gives you in terms of number of messages available, downloaded, deleted, etc.? I'm also interested in how much was transferred size wise... If I mised it in the conf file just let me know, but I didn't see anything... Thanks! -philip

Hi, Recently I have to rush one of my mail servers to a new installation, actually GNU Linux/Debian Sarge, the system run dovecot 0.99.14 for pop and imap, and the web server, other machine, uses horde2/imp3. The problem is the following, pop clients including the imp3 cant log properly apparently, the even when a connection is made to pop3 dovecot trys to make a secure connection, I found this after sniffing the connection between the web server and the mail server, for some reason, imp cant handle it well and the some clients like OutLook also have troubles working this out. For now I work around this problem by disabling the ssl/tsl support, but that's not the solution I need. So the question is can I disable this feature without loosing the secure connection and how can I do it? Cheers, rak

Hi, I saw a new assert and core dump today in 1.0alpha1. Setup is Solaris 9, dovecot built with gcc 4.0.1, running as imap server for mbox format. The syslog said: IMAP(user): file message-body-search.c: line 393 (message_body_search_ctx): assertion failed: (input->v_offset <= part->physical_pos) A gdb analysis of the core dump is attached. BTW, I save core dumps in case you need further debugging done for an assert. On another note, I have also had issues with dovecot locking up with "Too many open files" syslog error messages. Last night, after several hours of "too many open files" complaints, the master dovecot process just died -- no core dump and no complaint to syslog. Per advice of the list, I have doubled the rlim_fd_cur and rlim_fd_max kernel parameters and rebooted my imap server. I also saw in my syslog: Sep 6 16:48:53 emerald dovecot: [ID 956436 mail.error] pipe() failed: Too many open files Sep 6 16:48:53 emerald dovecot: [ID 257797 mail.crit] dup2(stderr) failed: Bad file number With students back, they have been giving dovecot a real hard workout. It should be possible to just rename 0.99.x's .customflags file to dovecot-keywords (but it can't be renamed back after modification). Also fixed another uid/sequence mixup bug with setting keywords in general (in mbox too). Fixed SHA1 checksum generation with big-endian machines (used only in passwords). I think I'll forget about the master/config rewrite for a while and leave it for Dovecot v2.0. That would mean the next release will be called 1.0-alpha1. After that there should be only bugfixes and some smaller features and optimizations left. I looked through my TODO and found the following missing features / optimizations that pretty much have to be done before v1.0. Anything important missing? - keywords: - add some limits to how many there can be - send FLAGS/PERMANENTFLAGS untagged replies when they change (required by IMAP RFC) - remove unused keywords from keyword list? (only when adding new ones) - mail cache file - cache _all_ headers that are marked to be cached when headers are being parsed, not just the ones client is requesting at that time. - compression should drop fields with last_used < (latest_mail_index_date - month) - when parsing mbox or saving message, parse the mail through index-mail so things gets saved into cache immediately - mbox - when we're updating flags with lazy writing, we're still parsing the mbox, just not writing to it! - always add empty line after mail. - make the parser require it too? syncing should make sure there always exists two LFs at end of file. raw-mbox-stream should make sure the last message ends with LF even if it doesn't exist in the file - COPY doesn't work to same mailbox (lock assert crash) - keep mbox lock for two extra seconds after sync to make sure we notice changes made by other mbox writer software - maildir - hardlink copying doesn't update indexes (does it even work?) - deliver needs quota integration somehow so it returns out-of-quota failure as fatal instead of temporary Probably after v1.0: - Full NFS support - Try to handle out-of-quota/disk space situations well

Hi, I'm currently using 1.0.alpha1 without luck regarding a namespace issue. Maybe it's a general understanding problem on my side, but let's see :-) I would like to have my mail stored in Maildir format below ~/.maildir/, which works fine so far. I want any (sub)folders to be created like this: ~/.maildir/ /cur /new /tmp /.Folder/ /cur /new /tmp /.Subfolder/ /cur /new /tmp BUT ;) Dovecot seems to disregard my namespace settings: --8<--[ /etc/dovecot.conf ]--8<-- default_mail_env = maildir:~/.maildir:INDEX=MEMORY namespace private { separator = / # prefix = # location = maildir:~/.maildir inbox = yes hidden = no } --8<-- Every new (sub)folder I create is stored as ~/.maildir/.Folder resp. ~/.maildir/.Folder.Subfolder in the filesystem. [Dovecot] upgrading: should I and what will change?

I've been running dovecot 0.99.11 with postfix and postgresql in a production environment with about 25 real users and a couple hundred aliases split over a few domains for nearly a year now. No problems of any kind that I have noticed. Should I upgrade to the latest dovecot? What changes, if any, will I have to make? I've looked through the archives for a couple months without seeing much, and I don't see anything specific in the docs about upgrading. -Joshua <><

[Dovecot] how to migrate from one server to another?

Hi I have purchased and installed a new PC and would like to transfer my mail (in Maildir format) to it. Are there any precautions I must take before copying the mail over? I will disable mail delivery temporarily so no new mail gets written to disk but I don't know if dovecot has to be stopped before copying/editing mail for backup or migrating purposes. Anything else I must pay attention to? TIA Bram

Hi, I'm trying to add some sanity to a badly thought out mail system that, for various reasons, cant be fixed from the bottom up at this moment in time. The system is debian sarge, exim 4.5, doing virtual domains and delivering into mboxes in /var/spool/virtual/$domain/$user , there is webmail access and this allows user to create folders in (dont shoot me!) /etc/openwebmail/users/$domain/$username/mail/ , the files in this directory appear to be mboxes in that each mail begins with a From: line, the naming of these files is completely arbitrary. Im trying to add imap access that would ideally give users access to the mail in /var , and also in the openwebmail dirs, though the latter is not essential, just desirable. All mails are owned by user mail. I've installed dovecot-imapd version 0.99.14-1, but if this doesnt have the namespace additions from version 1.0-test, I can easily install that. Reading the wiki, it seems I can achieve this with namespaces, something like namespace private { separator = / inbox = yes prefix = location = mbox:/etc/openwebmail/users/%d/%u/mail:INBOX=/var/spool/virtual/%d/%u } But, Im not quite sure where this would go in the config file, going by the example config you can just shoehorn them into the middle of the file, but I'm not 100% sure... I had been trying to use things like.. default_mail_env = mbox:/var/folders/%d/%u:INBOX=/var/spool/virtual/%d/%u:INDEX=/var/indexes/%d/%n Having created the necessary folders in /var , but I didnt have much success (the authentication part worked straight away using my passwd file), And having read more and been told about namespaces on the irc channel, it seemed like I should go that way anyway. If anyone could give me a steer in the right direction, or even tell me i'm wasting my time (tho dont bother telling me how much better maildir etc is, i know!) Thanks for your time. -- Pete

hi there, i am totally new to dovecot and use communigate pro stalker.com as my mailserver. everything in communigate is fine. the only problem i do have is imap speed. i just got a login at a dovecot server and i must say WOW its so fast amazing. since communigate does not support indexing on mdir direcotries i need to find a solution. so i am wondering if it would be possible to use dovecot imap server on top of communigate as an imap server? i know that this would not work for special cgp features like shared mailboxes. etc.... thnax christof

Hi! After upgrading from dovecot 0.9.14 to 1.0 crashes immediately after starting when using ldap as userdb and passdb. [Dovecot] Dovecot-LDA: Development questions

Hello, I'm tinkering with Dovecot-LDA in order to achieve: + Better intergration into sendmail, and + tweaking its way to act on errors. Attached patch is a "brainstorming" like suggestion: a) when sendmail is dropping a message, it spawns the LDA, captures stderr/stdout and, if the LDA returns an exit code != 0, generates either a DSN or, when EX_TEMPFAIL, queues the mail. Hence, it is not necessary to have mail_send_rejection() to spawn another sendmail instance. The attached patch suggest to introduce an "operation_mode", in which Dovecot-LDA behaves differently for different environments. b) Some errors, like when spooling the message into the users folders fails, because the user is out of quota, one should prefer tempfailing the message, rather than a permanent error. Attached patch includes an option "-f", which has main() to return EX_TEMPFAIL. This is the way maildrop is acting, BTW. === Sendmail supports "account+detail" syntax out-of-the-box; that is for recipient matching only the portion left of the plus-sign is significant, the trailing portion may be used by the LDA as a hint to spool the message. Usually the information is passed via command line to the LDA. The libsieve seems to already support this notation, see tokens DETAIL, subaddress, :detail and the README file: Derrick Brashear (shadow+sieve@andrew...) Did somebody used or have some idea how to make use of the "+detail" stuff of libsieve? Basically the main problem in my opinion is what to query, because the information (final physical mailbox and/or owner) one can query is neither a header nor an envelope information (besides that the envelope information is not available to the LDA anyway). Consider a BCC to one recipient that expands to numerous maildrops, then the maildrop of actual delivery attempt can not be derived from neither the envelope nor the header information. The only way to integrate the +detail stuff into Dovecot-LDA seems to be when "keep" is performed (or no Sieve script is present). Then one could spool the message into folder "detail", if it already exists -- one should be allow other people to create mailboxes ;-) This is no action of the Sieve library, but of the LDA calling sieve. The Wiki mentions in the section about to setup exim: envelope_to_add What's this setting is doing? In src/sieve-cmu.c, static int getenvelope, there is: } else if (!strcasecmp(field, "to")) { *contents = m->temp; m->temp[0] = /*FIXME:msg_getrcptall(m, m->cur_rcpt)*/m->authuser; m->temp[1] = NULL; return SIEVE_OK; So it seems appropriate to tweak dovecot_sieve_run() into: mdata.authuser = username; mdata.recipient = detail_on_commandline ? concat(username, "+", detail_on_commandline) : username ; Or better: Have the complete recipient passed via command line option? and alter getenvelope(): m->temp[0] = m->recipient; I think this tweaks would be better than have the "-d" option support the plus-syntax. === Currently, the compiled Sieve script is placed into the same directory the script is located itself. How about to _always_ file the compiled script into [CONTROLDIR]/.dovecot.sievec? That would come over the problem with the system-wide default sieve script. Otherwise: The README mentions a test application and I found a sievec and sieved application (Sieve compile / decompiler) I presume. [Dovecot] 1.0a1 Coredumps / errors when moving multiple

I've just tried upgrading 1.0t51 to 1.0a1 and it has been........ difficult. I've been getting logs of Sig11s and other errors, and have trouble tracking them down. Main problem seems to be with moving / copying messages. One at a time works (mostly), multiple will coredump the imap process (not yet managed to get a proper core out though...) I'm using imap & Maildir, maildir on NFS & Indexes on UFS, Solaris 8. Server is postfix / procmail (delivering pre-sorted into various Maildir folders) and Dovecot 1.0a1. Client is thunderbird on OS/X. If I turn off mbox_copy_with_hardlinks, then instead of a coredump I get a hang and an error message: > IMAP(gnb): Maildir /home/gnb/Maildir sync: UID inserted in the middle > of mailbox (3871 > 3870, file = 1125740849.23189_0.lenford:2,Saa) This is after I've removed all the cache/index files and even all the dovecot-uid files.... Fedora Core 4 dovecot-0.99.14-4.fc4 I'm trying to diagnose some mail issues. I do not believe Dovecot is the problem. If I could see the Dovecot logs, it might be helpful in resolving my issue. In /etc/dovecot.conf I have tried to set the following: log_path = /var/log/dovecot.log info_log_path = /var/log/dovecot.log I have 'touch /var/log/dovecot.log'. When I try to restart dovecot 'service dovecot restart', it fails and I'm not able to see the reason why it is failing. Where am I going wrong getting this working? Also, are there various debug levels? I saw 'debug' mentioned on the list, but I was unable to see anything about it in the config file. Hi Chris, We migrated to Dovecot from Qpopper/UW-IMAP in July. We previously looked at altering the Dovecot code, client-side duplicate email cleanup utilities (for Eudora), and enforcing "download-then-delete from the server" prior to the migration. We got around the "downloading of previously downloaded emails" problem by moving all previously downloaded emails to a new folder called "ConvertedMail" during the conversion process from mbox (Qpopper) to maildir. This assumes you're going to maildir though. The benefit in this is that the POP client only retrieves email from th inbox folder, and after conversion, this will mean only new emails. If the POP client's previous download of older email dissappeared (for whatever reason), a Web Mail client accessing the mailstore via IMAP would allow access to the ConvertedMail folder. Hello All (possibly again) I did send a messge earlier, but it may have been eaten by the mail system. I've now managed to get dovecot started, and I'm now getting "Missing protocol from server name 'imap'" This is somewhat confusing. Does it mean that I have somewhere called my server imap? or is it talking about it missing a protocol called imap? if it's meant to be "missing protocol imap definition" or somesuch, I have filled that out, but can't for the life of me figure out what the error message is actually trying to tell me! I'm running dovecot alpha1 on RedHat as3. I have the feeling I've been staring at the problem for too long, and somone will just say "have you tried this!", but it's worth a shot. hi all, I am hoping to convert a 350K user qpopper installation using mbox to dovecot and maildir (pop3 only). many of the users "leave mail on server", and qpopper's UIDL format isn't (yet) supported by dovecot. since the UIDLs have been written by qpoppper to the existing mbox files (and will be preserved when the mboxes are converted to maildir) it would be possible to do this seamlessly if dovecot could read the UIDLs from the messages and populate the index files as needed. is anything like this already possible? it doesn't matter what UIDLs new messages get, since they would never have been downloaded by the user via qpopper. any ideas would be appreciated. grant.

Hi, I am using dovecot 0.99.14 RPM on a Fedore Core 4 Server. Everything was running fine for weeks (IMAP), and 2 days ago I was not able to delete/purge any Mail in INBOX. I am using Outlook 2003 as an IMAP-Client. I tried to delete/purge the Inbox with other mail-clients (Mozilla Thunderbird, Mulberry) too, same effect: I can read mail, I can copy them by drag-n-drop to a local Client-Folder (eg: Outlook) , but I can delete them. Strange enough, the mails are marked as read, but when I login again, all Mail are marked as new/unread ! When I log to the node, and start mutt (which is using the spool-file /var/spool/mail/username), then I am able to read-n-delete all Mails... The File Permisson of the File: 755, Owner: Username, Group: Mail. Did I miss something ? How can this stop working from one day to another ? I seems to me, like the INBOX is not writable to me ... From the UNIX Side, it is ... :-/ Any Comment/Feedback would be helpfull. This is really strange. Regards, AVE.

[Dovecot] Weird internaldate behavior with 1.0-test80 and mbox folder

Has anyone else encountered weird date behavior with mbox-style folders? I am nearly ready to bite the bullet and convert my UW imap hierarchy (which is in mbx format) to Dovecot. In so doing, I need to convert each UW-specific mbx-format mailboxes to the more portable mbox format, which Dovecot can read. (This is done with the 'mbxcvt' utility that's part of UW.) I am then planning to copy those mbox-format folders into a staging area in a directory I've defined to Dovecot as a mbox-format namespace. The plan was then to use my normal GUI to reorganize my old data and copy it into proper maildir folders into Dovecot's default namespace. Since I'm naturally paranoid, I did a dry run of a couple folders first and discovered a rather strange anomaly -- all the mail in the converted folder is displayed by Dovecot with a timestamp exactly 200 minutes (3 hours 20 minutes) into the future! Investigating this via telneting to the respective IMAP ports shows that UW imapd shows the correct timestamp both in the original mbx-format folder and the converted mbox-format folder -- so it appears that Dovecot is skewing the time. This doesn't look like a timezone issue since 200 minutes ahead from CST6CDT would be a pretty strange timezone -- not even Newfoundland has this odd a TZ value! :) (For the curious, Newfoundland is a Canadian province whose time zone is TZ=NST3:30NDT, therefore being a half-hour "off" from the rest of North America.) I have distilled this into a degenerate case of a single folder with a single message and can reproduce. As mentioned, I am running 1.0-test80. My platform is AIX 5.1. I created the test by sending a message to myself using date | mail -s "Test at $(date)" roma(a)uiuc.edu and using my MUA (Mulberry) to file it into the test folder, which defaults to mbx format in UW's namespace. I am trying to get away from courier imap because it is flaky the way it uses FAM (or gamin in my case), and the developers seem to have a chip on their collective shoulder, and it is too complex. I found dovecot because it is ships with CentOS 4 (ie Red Hat Enterprise 4). It looks like just what I need: simple, fast. But I can't use it! I can't authenticate. If any of these statements were untrue, I would use it happily: o it doesn't support simple bind authentication against LDAP o I don't want to make passwords readable, and this version (0.99.14) doesn't support SSHA anyway o it won't talk to the saslauthd I already have configured o I can't find how to implement a new auth module for dovecot I am wondering why, in the quest to fill a niche with a simple, fast, secure IMAP server, the authors felt the need to re-implement a robust and well-tested infrastructure (saslauthd) with a less-featureful and untested one?

[Dovecot] Dovecot imap with Postfix and using Thunderbird as client

Hi, I just recently installed dovecot, and I am having the following problem: If I send an email to my account on this new machine, I can log in via SSH and use the unix mail command, and instantly my email is visible. If I turn on Thunderbird, it will show my new message. If Thunderbird was already on and had already checked the mailbox, even if I click on get new mail for that specific mailbox, the new mail does not show up until I restart thunderbird. Is there something that I have set wrong in the config files that is preventing the IMAP part of dovecot from refreshing the messages quickly for me to see? I dont see anything in the log files at all except for it showing me logging in. Thanks, Ben

Has there been any thought given to implementing authentication via an LDAP 'bind', rather than by a password lookup and hash comparison? doing a bind would obviate the need to make the passwords readable by the dovecot process and would lend itself to improved security. I'd say it depends, I'm working with clustered filesystems in SAN environments where mbox is significantly faster than maildir since single mbox file generates much less overhead in form of distributed file locking accross cluster nodes. On single host systems with good file system I'd probably go with maildir. Maybe someday I'll manage to do some benchmarking between mbox and maildir with Dovecot. -- Tomi Hakala

So this gets me: 1) Daily backups of a ~/Maildir are much smaller than a large mbox because most files don't change, while a single change to a large mbox file will require the entire mbox to be backed up. 2) Moving emails from folder to folder is much faster, as it's moving a single file and you don't have to delete an email from a middle of a mbox file. I have a 5 year old 450 Mhz Dell that easily and quickly manages over 2 Gbytes of email for several users. Regards, Blair

Hello, I'm running an Debian etch box with unstable and ever since the last upgrade to dovecot, I've seen odd things. At times, I would see emails would go missing from the Inbox or other folders, and I couldn't move emails that were moved from the Inbox to another folder back into the Inbox. These have seen gone away since I removed all dovecot.* files and .index* files from my Maildir's and let Dovecot regenerate them as needed. Hi, This is off-topic I know, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. I'm running postfix 2.2.x, dovecot 0.99, and it's working great, I wanted pop-before-smtp functionality, so I fired up the suggested perl daemon in the dovecot docs.. This seems to work, I ran tests, it was picking up the ip's, putting them in the .db file, and postfix was able to read them. My issue is that it doesn't seem to continue to do this. It only works if I force it with a --reprocess flag. At that point, the latest set of ip's get inserted in the database, and all is well. Any ideas? I did check to make sure the daemon is running, and it is. Thanks! -Micah

What is the default name of the inbox when using maildir format? Hi, I'm running CentOS 4 in a X86_64 server with dovecot. I've been having some (already reported by others) problems. For example, sometimes - randomly - a mbox file wil get a couple of lines at the beggining of the mbox file (/var/spool/mail/user), before the first From line, and dovecot will complain that that file is not a mbox file. Also, neither sylpheed nor thunderbird would get new mail via imap a second time (I have to kill thunderbird, then run it again so it would give me the new mails). But I'm more concerned by the mbox corruption. so I want to upgrade, but to what? 0.99.14? But in www.dovecot.org says that dovecot-1.0 is recommended. But it also says -alpha! (not even beta: alpha). There is also a stable branch, but it's not the recommended one (or is it?). Can anyone point me to a stable version that addresses the mbox corruption issue, or if there isn't such a version, any idea of when it will be ready? Thank you. -- Diego.

Hello, I have a setup where each user has different mailbox formats (some use only /var/spool/mail/user) mailbox format, some is stored in mbx format ~/INBOX or ~/mbox and some is stored in maildir format in ~/Mail/ I currently use UW-IMAP to read /var/spool/mail/... and the mbx format mailboxes in ~/INBOX and mutt to read ~/Mail/... (the maildirs in ~/Mail/ are created by procmail rules) Does dovecot make it possible to also read the maildir directories i have in ~/Mail/ without having to reconfigure the delivery/imap system for all users? I know I should migrate to use one consistent mailbox format (thinking about maildir), but to avoid any migration It would be great if dovecot just would be able to read multiple inboxes in different formats differently configured on a per-user basis. I use postfix for delivery/transfer.

[Dovecot] quick, quick, slow...

Hi, I'm (still) evaluating dovecot for a switch from UW in the near future. All the following happens on a Solaris server. Functionally, all is well. However, I see strange phenomena. Normally, dovecot is pretty swift. Every now and then, though, things slow down to a crawl. Everything seems to be working, still, but a few orders of magnitude slower. A copy of an outgoing message (of a few lines) to my Out box, which normally succeeds nearly instantly, suddenly takes over 30 minutes, for example. Obvious things to look for would be conflicting locking strategies. As far as I know, though, my mail delivery agent (procmail) and all mail handling software use dotlocking, fcntl lockf, in that order), as does dovecot. In syslog there's nothing to see, except an occasional SSL_accept() syscall failed: EOF messsage, which I can correlate to my service monitoring software (nagios), which checks for the presence of the imaps service. When this happens and I quit my mail agent (Thunderbird), an imap process seems to remain on the server. Killing that does not resolve the extreme slowdown; that persists on consecitive reruns of my mailer. I'm at a loss here. Any hints?

Thanks but that was of absolutely no help. Evidently the 1.0alpha version syntax is completely different from the .99 release. The 1.0 syntax for setting up dovecot.conf uses brackets "{}" for auth and other drastic differences, so most of the documentation is either vacant or out of date. I tried using the syntax used in the Wiki only to have it die. There are NO docs for the 1.0 release to help understand how to make MySQL work with Dovecot. I've hacked my way along and stumbled into some success, but overall I'd have to say there is a bug in the software that is preventing it from connecting. I do not know where else to look or what else to do other than start to hunt again for yet another pop server. I've spent the past week downloading, compiling, and trying to get various POP servers to work, only to have the wheels fall off at one point or another. I'm so fu**ing close to getting Dovecot to work, but may have to walk away from yet another disappointing software product. I might downshift to the .99 release and see if I can get that one to work. But thanks anyway for your desire to help, it prevented me from leaving a note and then pulling the trigger. :-) Tim

[Dovecot] Feature Request - wild idea - folders for executing programs

Timo, I have a wild idea for a feature that is somewhat unusual, would be very powerful, and easy to implement. What I want is ... Special folders that when someone drags a message into them - it pipes the message into a program. The reason I want this is - for example - reporting of spam. Suppose you want everyone to have a spam-missed folder so that if a spam gets through then the user drags it into the spam missed folder. But instead of storing it there it executes a program and pipes the message into it. In this case a learner program for the spam filter. The folder would be "write only" and attempting to read the folder would generally look like it was empty. Setup would look like this: executable-folder spam-missed { command = /usr/bin/sa-learn spam user = spamd group = spamd create_folder = yes accounts = * } The "create_folder" command says to add the folder to the users lists whether or not it is physically there. The folder appears even if there is no real folder. If it is "no" then it only exists if there is a real folder. The "user" and "group" is of course the UID and GID to run the "command" as. The "accounts" determines which accounts are affected. Default is everyone. Other uses is to control blacklists and whitelists. Dragging a message into the blacklist folder runs an executable that adds the sender to a blacklist, or a whitelist, or controls settings etc.

I just upgraded my production box from 1.0-stable to 1.0.alpha1. I've noted some new errors in my dovecot logs: Aug 28 23:23:56 cliff dovecot: IMAP(rsferra): Corrupted index cache file /mail/mcad.edu/rsferra/Maildir/.Sent Items/dovecot.index.cache: indexid changed Aug 28 23:33:57 cliff dovecot: IMAP(acarr): Corrupted transaction log file /mail/mcad.edu/acarr/Maildir/.Deleted Messages/dovecot.index.log: unexpected end of file while reading header I'm not too worried about those, as I'm hoping they'll go away once all the indexes have been rebuilt. However, these are a bit more disconcerting: Aug 29 09:07:35 cliff dovecot: child 22484 (imap) killed with signal 11 Aug 29 09:07:36 cliff dovecot: child 22488 (imap) killed with signal 11 I don't see any other errors in the logs around those messages. [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0 alpha trouble on OS X

Hi all! I've just upgraded dovecot from 0.99 to 1.0 alpha, and it seems to be working perfectly except for a strange problem with one of my imap- users Inbox. Every folder is accessible, including the Inbox. The inbox currently contains five mails. With at least three of these, when they are attempted moved, dovecot crashes immediately with the message "Unable to determine CPSProcessSerNum pid: 12345 name: imap". The destination folder seems to be of no importance. I can copy or move these mails from the command-line, but not from the mail-client. I can, however, open them and read them from the Inbox using Apple Mail or SquirrelMail, as well as from the command- line. I've checked the privileges, and the mails belong to the user and have the appropriate rw-privileges. Any new incoming mail seems to be accessible as expected, and can be moved as desired. I apologize if this has already been discussed, but I've searched the archives without finding anything. Best regards Lars Skovgaard

Hi All This is possibly a silly question but after reading some of the docs and hunting a bit I could not find an answer. I need to run my pop3 service on both the standard 110 port and another (not really sure which yet) port. My ISP is doing shaping on port 110 destined traffic causing a nightmare with some of my machines pulling only some of their mail then crashing (and no its not anything else it is the ISP). Hi, I figured out my issue, in my database query for the mail dir, I was grabbing the home column instead of the mail column. Once I changed the name of the column returned it started working. Currently my queries are like such: password_query = SELECT `passwd` FROM users WHERE userid = '%u' and user_query = SELECT concat('/usr/local/virtual/',maildir, '.INBOX') as mail, 101 as uid, 103 as gid FROM users WHERE userid = '%u' My question now is currently I'm saving mail like this: mailroot/domain/user/.INBOX I assume I should be able to save it as: mailroot/domain/user/ the .INBOX is superfluous, is that correct, or will imap want to make directories at the same level at inbox? [Dovecot] Success: MySQL Works on 0.99 But Not 1.0alpha

Great news! yay! I downshifted to dovecot 0.99-14 and pop server is working! Finally a pop-server and postfix and all! And no Courier! or Qmail! Whatever changed in the 1.0 release regarding MySQL is broken, and is working in the .99-14 release. I can finally use my mail server! :-) I'll keep an eye out for the 1.x stable release, hopefully it will have MySQL support working. Maybe by then I'll be brave enough to get IMAP working and maybe even ( gulp ) LDAP. Good Luck to all of you! Timo go go go ! Tim

my mailsystem is using postfix and virtual mailbox which stored in mysql db. SMTP AUTH is using PAM, pam-mysql to authenticate against a mysql db. I installed dovecot 0.99-14. In the dovecot example config file it mentioned that auth_passdb can check against thru PAM but auth_userdb didn't Does it mean that auth_userdb should use other means e.g. /etc/passwd, shadow, vpopmail, etc and in my case it is mysql. Right ?

The default_mail_env is very powerful, but .... If you have multiple databases wouldn't it make sense to have a separate mail environment for each database? Hello, I have a postgresql database which contains users that will access dovecot, but their passwords are hashed and I don't have them in plain text. I was reading documentation that you can add tell dovecot which password scheme should it use. For example: password_query = "select '{MD5}'||password from users where userid=%u" Which would mean that dovecot will hash the password with MD5 from client and match it with the one in database. [Dovecot] Namespace Feature

I've never used namespaces and don't quite know what they do. If I add a namespace then do things like shared folders magically appear to users? Also - I wonder if this is possible. I'd like to create a write only shared folder. I know this is unusual but I have a reason. I'd like to have a folder that people can drag spam into to report missed spam. I want to write only so people aren't reading each other's spam. I have a bot that comes by and reads this to train the bayesian filter. [Dovecot] Postfix/Dovecot

Hi, I searched through the maillist archives and the docs, but didn't find anything that directly addresses my question, so here goes if anyone has some time to address it. I'm running a redhat el3 server, with Postfix as the MTA, and I'd like to setup Dovecot to provide IMAP/POP3 services. Postfix uses MySQL lookups to do mailbox lookups, and I configured dovecot to do the same thing. The mail is delivered to /usr/local/virtual/<domainname>/<end.address>/ in maildir format by Postfix. This is working fine. I've setup dovecot, and set it do user auth and user lookups to MySQL. This seems to be working fine as I get no mysql errors from the queries, and my login process (to IMAP from localhost) is fine. Here's a typical scenario: telnet localhost imap Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost.domain (127.0.0.1 <http://127.0.0.1>). Escape character is '^]'. * OK dovecot ready. 1login micah(a)9250x.com "rigid2" 1 OK Logged in. 2 select INBOX 2 NO If I look in the directory for micah(a)9250x.com I find: # ls cur new tmp The permissions are 777 for now to eliminate that possibility. The dovecot log file lists: imap-login: Aug 28 12:27:11 Info: Login: micah(a)9250x.com [127.0.0.1<http://127.0.0.1> ] each time I log in, and nothing after that indicating why it's not seeing any mail. Why isn't it seeing any mail? Do I need to make an Inbox directory and tell postfix to deliver there? From reading the docs, having the delivery into the main maildir directory should be okay, but I might be mis-reading. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.. Thank you, -Micah

[Dovecot] Permission denied changing to mail directory

I have 3 domains using one mail server. I've set the dovecot mail directories to be /mail/mail/%d/%n When someone logs on, dovecot attempt to navigate to the domain directory first & we get a permission denied, and we get no further. Its very odd because (a) it was working up until 16:50 on Thursday & (b) the directories now have 777 access. Each user is (at present) a separate unix user & the directories are owned by root & have a file group of mail. I would have thought that the 777 access would have been enough. I don't know what we did on Thursday evening, but any ideas about how to fix the permissions problem? Chris

First off, sorry if this has been asked before - I have looked, honest. Is it possible to get dovecot to authenticate users against active directory, treating the AD as a plain ldap server? I have this working with cyrus saslauthd. Currentlt I get a long delay (30 seconds or so) then * BYE Disconnected for inactivity. All I get in the maillog is imap-login: Disconnected: Inactivity [::ffff:127.0.0.1] I am using dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1 on CentOS 4. If anybody has got this to work then please let me know - otherwise I will be forced to use Cyrus........ Cheers Dave Smith

[Dovecot] Dovecot Delivery Bug

Ran into an interesting bug in Dovecot delivery. A friend forwards an email to me as an atachment. When I receive it - it comes in as two separate messages. One is the forwarding message which is empty, and the other is the original message that was forwarded but it comes in as if I had got the email directly. If I use exim to deliver the message to the mailbox it works. Right ? Yes, at least in 1.0-alpha1/stable, so I guess the same for 0.99. Dovecot can authenticate via mysql directly, of course (but I've never done it, so don't ask me how!) What would be extremely helpful is a really clean explanation of how to set up connections for MySQL. It would have to start with basic information and some real-world examples that make no assumptions, and clearly spell it out without confusion. In fact good examples reduce the need to subscribe to mailing lists and ask dumb questions! The current assumptions in the docs to date are that somehow non-geeks and those of us who have learned far more about email servers than we ever wanted to will somehow "get it" without decent examples. This has got to be the biggest problem using Dovecot. I've tried just about every pop-server I can find and I am about to give up on Dovecot if I can't get the connection to MySQL to work. I just want decent pop server that understands Maildir, now that I went through Cyrus SASL hell and got that working--again with incredibly poor documentation. And I don't give a rats-ass about IMAP, just need a pop server. Maybe IMAP later, for now just a pop server that understands Maildir and comes from open source. I'm using Postfix but it shouldn't matter. So far I've tried the following pop servers: nupop-1.3.9 -- can't compile qmail-1.03 -- a f**ing nightmare cyrus-imap/pop -- poor-to-no docs for pop server -- another nightmare vm-pop3d-1.1.6 -- works only on mbox flexpop-1.0.1 -- no docs , doesn't compile popular-1.5.5 -- docs are too sketchy for installation, too complicated and doesn't work I thought Dovecot would be the last one I have to screw with, but maybe I'm wrong... Hi, we are trying to track down the problem that prevents two mysql password databases from working. Instead of connecting to each database, it looks like dovecot tries to connect *twice* to the second specified. Do do this we just inserted some i_warning()s in the code. We noticed that passdb_sql_init (auth/passdb-sql.c) is called twice, once per configuration file, with the correct argument (path to config file). However, as you can see in the following maillog piece, this function calls sql_connect with the SAME parameters (the parameters of the second database). So the first call works and dovecot connects to the host correctly (lines 7-8), but in the second call dovecot finds the connection already up and obviously doesn't try again (last line). Could this be the origin of the problem? Now we are trying to understand why the argument to sql_connect isn't updated correctly. Maybe a bug in the linked list of sql_connection's? [Dovecot] Dovecot Virtual Users & Sendmail

Not directly Dovecot, but a configuration problem. We have a working set-up with Dovecot+Procmail+Sendmail, using POP-before-SMTP. We want to be able to offer email accounts to some local schools, using SquirrelMail (keeps their costs & maintenance down). The whole arrangement is working, but we don't want to have to have 300+ School children as users of our Red Hat Enterprise server, so I've set up a passwd style file for authentication. This all works fine, they can access mailboxes & send emails, but to receive Sendmail is checking that they are unix users & bounces messages back if they aren't in /etc/passwd too. Has anybody ever got Sendmail working with Dovecot virtual users? Or is it time I switched to Postfix? Chris Hogan

Hi, I've been running 1.0alpha1 in production since August 18, and got my first assert and core yesterday. Otherwise it has been running flawlessly. My setup: Sun E220R, Solaris 9, compiled dovecot with gcc 4.0.1, configured dovecot like so: #!/usr/bin/sh VERSION=1.0-alpha1 CC=gcc CFLAGS="-g -O" CPPFLAGS=-I/opt/openssl/include LDFLAGS=-L/opt/openssl/lib \ ./configure --prefix=/opt/dovecot.$VERSION --with-ssl=openssl \ --with-ssldir=/opt/openssl/ssl > configure.out The syslog message: Aug 25 04:15:43 emerald dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.error] IMAP(user): file mbox-sync-update.c: line 442 (mbox_sync_update_header_from): assertion failed: (ctx->mail.uid == 0 || ctx->mail.uid_broken || ctx->mail.uid == mail->uid) Gdb analysis of the resulting core file is attached, I hope this helps.
