[Dovecot] IMAP Memory Error

Hi, I recently upgraded dovecot on an OpenBSD server from the 0.99.x series to the 1.0-test series to eliminate a problem. That was fixed, however I am now experiencing issues with IMAP(S) connections. The main IMAPS use to the server is via Squirrelmail (many users login with it), however I typically use Thunderbird. The user mailboxes are stored in Maildir format. Basically, moving, deleting or copying mails tends not to work. I have managed to move mails in Thunderbird if the source mailbox is small, and deleting mails usually works in Thunderbird. However, in Squirrelmail deleting or moving results in: "ERROR : Connection dropped by imap-server. Query: COPY 5629 "<dest-mailbox>" /var/log/maillog reports: May 24 23:19:03 orca dovecot: IMAP(jmcaree): pool_system_malloc(): Out of memory The Out of memory error appears when moving mails with Thunderbird, also. I had originally upgraded to dovecot1.0-test66 via a patch supplied by an OpenBSD porter. Today I decided to compile -test70 to see if it was any better. Unfortunately, this issue still exists. I tried upgrading Squirrelmail to the latest (1.4.4 from 1.4.3a), but no luck there. Since it's happening with both it and Thunderbird, though, I don't see it being a client issue. Server is: # uname -a OpenBSD my.hostname.com 3.7 GENERIC.RAID#0 amd64 I'd appreciate any assistance or advice on this issue! Obviously, I'd prefer to not have to downgrade to the 0.99.x series. :-) I'm not subscribed to the list, so please CC me with any replies. TIA, John.

[Dovecot] Auth Issue

I am so confused. Can someone help me out here? I have set it up so that it is to accept login via PLAIN TEXT. I am using Thunderbird to connect, and it will ask for my password (the username is already in the system) I get a pop-up for Enter the password for Username on Domain.com I enter my password (the same I would use to login to FTP) and it fails. Hi, I'm having a hideous problem trying to get the latest stable version to work. I've had no success and simply can't pinpoint the problem. Sorry for the rather long email but I've included as many details as I can to help here. I've been trying to install the latest stable version (as of 23rd May 2005) by downloading the tarball from the site to my OpenBSD 3.6 box, and building with these arguments: # ./configure --localstatedir=/var --with-ssl=openssl --with-ssldir=/etc/ssl --without-vpopmail - -without-pam --without-shadow Which builds fine. [Dovecot] Newbie-ish Questions

Hi, I'm in the process of migrating from local Maildir, to IMAP-enabled Maildir (terms are made up by me). I have my Maildir directories all under $HOME/Mail I have a procmail script that sorts everything into different folders under $HOME/Mail, and leaves the rest in a Maildir folder chosen by me, that I think of as my INBOX. Now, I am assuming that the folder I identify as INBOX is the one that a client will interpret as the INBOX? I really want the INBOX to be one of the folders under $HOME/Mail, but at the moment dovecot only will only consider the folder $HOME/Mail as the INBOX, so I have to send my 'inbox' mail to $HOME/Mail, rather than what I would prefer, which would be $HOME/Mail/INBOX (or something like that). The seting I have in dovecot.conf is: default_mail_env = maildir:~/Mail Is this is the only way, or am I doing something wrong? Should I be using default_mail_env to define the inbox? e.g. with: default_mail_env = maildir:~/Mail:INBOX=INBOX (or whatever my inbox mail folder name is) Maybe I've just got my Maildir folder set up completely wrong, and I'm supposed to accept the Maildir folder itself as the inbox? If so, please just send me on my way ;-) Also, since I don't know much about IMAP, where can I find out what the .subscriptions file is, and what it does, and also all the other files created by dovecot, like the .imap files and the .customflags Thanks, Joe -- Joe Dauncey

[Dovecot] Read-only mail folders

Is it possible to have folders on read-only partitions in Dovecot 1.0-stable? We have a NetApp fileserver which would probably be accessed via NFS (though iSCSI is possible) and which stores readonly "snapshots" of every directory accessible as .snapshot (but usually hidden from the operating system). It would be very nice to set up a "snapshot" namespace something like :- namespace public { separator = / prefix = "#snapshot/" location = maildir:%h/Maildir/.snapshot/nightly.0 hidden = yes } so that users could recover messages from say yesterday's version of their mailbox. Unfortunately, Dovecot always seems to want to write to the directory, even when indexes are stored elsewhere (as recommended with NFS anyway, I think) using INDEX=whatever in the location line. hello, i'm reading and trying to configuring my mailserver following this howto on the dovecot wiki: http://wiki.dovecot.org/moin.cgi/DovecotPostgresql but i got always this problem: ERROR: permesso negato per la relazione postfix_virtual in english is "permission denied for the relation postfix_virtual". Hi all I just compiled Dovecot v1.0-test70 and i tried using the dovecot-example.conf for a quick test to see if the daemon would work. I am currently using Dovecot 0.99.14-r1 as provided by Gentoo, in a Qmail + VPopmail configuration. I am curious as to how to configure it to ensure the most stability, as it serves >1000 clients. I would rather disable any indexing that give small speed improvements if they are not known to be stable. Advice? [Dovecot] 1.0-stable loses flag changes sometimes?

I've been struggling with an odd bug in the latest 1.0-stable (20050427) release. Sometimes Dovecot seems to forget that a message has been read or deleted and marks it unread (or not deleted). As far as I've been able to determine, it seems to happen when 1) There have been several recent deliveries 2) Possibly some of those deliveries are of multiple messages 3) Possibly they are read very quickly (say only a second for each message) 4) Folder is an mbox (haven't tried Maildir) I've seen it with Thunderbird mostly, but did manage to recreate it once in "telnet" - the debug IMAP client ;) - using "IDLE" "FETCH" and "STORE msgid +FLAGS (\Seen)" commands. I managed to catch it in the act with one Thunderbird session, and it seemed to occur when Thunderbird, for some reason, issued an IMAP "CHECK" command. In this case it issued an extra "* 710 FETCH (FLAGS (\Recent))" response (the new messages had been msgid 711-715). Incidentally, Thunderbird seems to do a "STORE .. +FLAGS (\Seen)" command even though this is implicit the "FETCH .. BODY[..]" command (and it gets informed of the flag change in the response). I've tried and tried to find a "formula" for re-creating the problem "on demand", but it only goes wrong occassionaly. My guess is it's some sort of timing thing with mbox sync (BTW we have "mbox_dirty_syncs = yes" and "mbox_very_dirty_syncs = no"). Has anybody else seen this? I'm hoping to roll out this version to our wider group of testers soon and would like to get this issue solved first if possible (it counts as an annoyance rather than a serious problem). Hello, I'am Filip Cristian System Administrator at Astral Telecom and i'am using on our email servers dovecot for pop*, imap* auth with mysql suport. I have noticed that in the 1.0-test* release you have support for multiple password databases. From what i have tested this it's working but only if you want to fallback to another supported password databases different that the privios. Is there a posibility to use multiple mysql authentication ? I mean to use two or more mysql hosts on wich to connect and search for the username if the user it's not in the first database? Hi I'm have problems with dovecot and the php imap_open function. Can't seem to get it to work. I just get a "Aborted login [127.0.0.1]" in the dovecot logs. Hi all I have just finished installing / configuring my dovecot IMAP server. Im seeing something weird happing. It seems my Winblows Outlook users are experiencing a problem whereby when they delete an email, Outlook puts a line though the email, but the mail does not delete. Im not sure if this is a an outlook problem or a dovecot IMAP problem. I cant see anything in the conf file to suggest that it is a IMAP problem. i have recently rebuilt dovecot on my mail server as i wanted to add SSL support for it. well, my OpenSSL libs are 64-bit, so what they hey, i'll build dovecot 64-bit as well. worked just fine, no issues at all. the setup is: Solaris 9/SPARC Sun C compiler Dovecot 0.99.14 after rebuilding it 64-bit, i now have a small problem however. I cannot save messages to IMAP folders from Mail.app on OSX 10.3.9. I've been searching, and I can't find any rpms of dovecot stable for RHEL 4. Does anybody know where I can get one? Ever since we went from IMAP-UW to Dovecot, we've been having frequent problems with mbox corruption, and I've read that 1.0 fixes many of those types of problems. I'm new to Dovecot but I've been able to get it up and running on a test basis without too much difficulty. I'm running dovecot-stable-20050508 with maildir, under Linux (an old Gentoo setup that's been stable for about 2,5 years). Mail client is Thunderbird. However, in the course of experimentally copying the accumulated household email (95000 emails from the last 10 years) from the existing IMAP server (UW-IMAP) using imapsync, I'm seeing some problems. Hi, I noticed, that all messages are moved from new/ to cur/ (using maildirs) after the authentication in pop3, even before the list command. I'm working with 1.0-stable-20050426. Why is this done? Shouldn't a message keep it's new-attrib as long as it isn't retrieved? This is how it worked with qmail-pop3d. Through imap, it works correctly. It's just sad if I can't distinguish between older and new emails with imap, just because I logged in through pop3 shortly before. Regards Marten

Whenever I attempt to retrieve or delete mail (Using thunderbird win client) operation takes several minutes. right before completion posts the following error to maillog: May 14 10:22:04 NAPUtil imap(djrobert): Timeout while waiting for release of shared fcntl() lock for index file /home/djrobert/Maildir/.Trash/.imap.index deleting the index file speeds up the operation once. subsequent operations are slow again I don't know what other process is placing a lock on the file. or how to clear it. I am running the 9914p0 package distributed with a march 11 3.7 snapshot (OS loaded from the same snapshot). I previously was running the release 3.6 OS and the Dovecot package that came with the CD. both installs exhibit the same behavior. Both Dovecot and postfix are configured with fcntl locking only. Hello, as our mail server load increases every day, I plan to scale the single mailserver in differnt units: 1x big storage server for all mailboxes, folders exported through NFS 1x smtp for mail-in (queue local, messages on storage server) 1x pop3/imap to retrieve the messages (config local, messages on storage server) Since we're using maildir only, there's no problem to get the messages into the mailboxes. But what about dovecot for retrieving them? NFS will be v3. Is locking still a problem with it? Might the indexes get corrupt? Regards Marten

Hello, first thanks for all the work, I appreciate the attention to security :-) I have a performance issue I am trying to solve. On my new server it would appear that synchronizing changes between the client and server is taking longer then my previous setup. I have recently upgraded from my old server to a new home (the basis for my comparison), From: - Redhat 9.0, uw-imap, using self-signed ssl certificates, on an old p-II. - Only one email user (me), about 40 mail folders with a few dozen messages in each. - Performance was never an issue, Mail.app took maybe 20 seconds to sync up minor deletes etc. To a new home: - Clean install of Fedora Core 3 on a p4, dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3. - Copy of /home/gturner/mail directory to new server, ie existing mbox format from uw-imap. - Recreated new self-signed certificates on new server, manually added the self-signed certificates, connected with no problems. - Mail.app client, on OS X 10.3.9 (no Tiger yet). I deleted the account on Mail.app, and created it again, the first login/sync took a long time, which was expected. However after that, I noticed that when I first connect or delete a file the sync is slower then the old setup (FYI, I keep "Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes" checked on Mail.app). A result of this appears to be some corruption of some mailboxes, only one or two, nothing valuable. For example, I delete a file and then clear the trash while things are still syncing. So my current solution is to be patient. :-) Any suggestions? I know that I could covert everything over to maildir, but I would like some feedback to see if this would be reasonable. I also noticed that initially there are 3 'gturner imap' threads and the syncing seems to be flying along. Then the thread count goes to 5 or 6 and sync starts to crawl. I looked for a way to limit the number of spawned threads, but only saw stuff about 'waiting' threads or reference to 1.0. I have attached my dovecot.conf for reference. Any help is greatly appreciated, Gord Turner.

Outlook (2003) users receive duplicate mail, "the" second mail doesn't have a title, when clicking on it, we are getting "non fully downloaded" error message. When deleting the "orignal" mail, all duplicates gets deleted too. Any ideas? Hi all, I noticed a problem with test69. I can recreate it with the following steps: - create a folder - copy about 200 emails from INBOX to this folder The copy succeeds, I can see with rawlog that it actually moves the 200 emails around. I can see on the spool that there are 200 emails. This is maildir, with spool over NFS. Now I immediately select the new folder. I now see only a part of the emails reported. And with rawlog I indeed see something like: * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft Junk) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft Junk \*)] Flags p ermitted. * 158 EXISTS * 158 RECENT * OK [UNSEEN 3] First unseen. * OK [UIDVALIDITY 1115970206] UIDs valid * OK [UIDNEXT 217] Predicted next UID 2 OK [READ-WRITE] Select completed. My client faithfully reports 158 instead of 200. If I now close/open my client, and re-select, I see 200. This I can reproduce with several different clients, but its pretty obvious it isnt a client issue. I also reproduced this with different users. Anyone see this also? NFS issue? Cor

[Dovecot] dovecot 1.0-test69 io hangs

I've been testing test69 with pop3 (under Linux and with mbox). I began testing with a large inbox (11000 mails) and it seems the communication between dovecot and the mailclient (evolution) stalls after 1000-2000 messages transferred. I've looked in to the (non-trivial) io functionality of dovecot. What I see is that io_loop_handler_run() in ioloop-poll.c does not signal any more data (and eventually the whole thing timeouts). Evolution downloads the mailbox fine via qpopper. I tried turning on rawlog: mail_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/rawlog /usr/libexec/dovecot/pop3 I cannot find any logfile.. I must be missing something. Any help or ideas ? Is it possible to change the IDLE command timeout to be more than 30 minutes? I have a client on my PalmOne Treo 600 which will stay in IDLE mode as long as it can. I would like to set the timeout to something much higher than 30 minutes. Maybe several hours or even more. I don't see a configuration setting for this value in "/etc/dovecot.conf". It was badly broken before. And somewhat off topic advertisement: I got a bit distracted from Dovecot a week ago when a guy started mailing me about wanting to write an irssi2 client as a project to learn Ruby. Half a year ago I had written a semi-working irssi2 server but I got stuck with it because I wasn't interested about writing client for it. Now that the client actually works, irssi2's development has kind of exploded :) Irssi2 is a bit related to Dovecot too, in that it'll be integrated with it more or less tightly to provide instant messaging support. Nothing prevents extending irssi2-protocol to support all other kinds of realtime events either, for example to send new mail notifications. If you're interested, see: http://main.irssi.org/projects/irssi2.html And for the lazy, here's the introduction copy&pasted: Shortly put, irssi2 is to instant messaging what IMAP is to mail. You can safely exit your irssi2 client, and irssi2 server just keeps on going. When you connect back with your client, you can see all the discussion that happened while you were away (and even older discussion, too, if you want). You can also use multiple clients even at the same time, so you could for example keep one client always open at home and still be able to check what's going on with your mobile phone. Irssi2 clients are encouraged to keep their configuration in server side, so nothing should prevent you from temporarily using another irssi2 client from your friend's home with no other configuration needed than irssi2 server's address, your username and password. Irssi2 is designed to support multiple chat protocols (IRC, SILC, MSN, ICQ, etc.) but without ignoring hardcore IRC users. That means that unlike all other similar attempts (such as Jabber), irssi2's client-server protocol will actually allow fully featured irssi2 IRC client to be written with no compromises (but still the same client can be used to talk to MSN and elsewhere). Note that irssi2 isn't trying to replace IRC servers (yet ;). irssi2 server simply connects to normal IRC servers just as a regular IRC client. To prevent mixups with these terms, IRC servers are usually called "gateways" in irssi2.

Hi all, I'm using Debian (testing) for my office mail. I'm using sendmail and Dovecot to deliver email to clients over IMAP using mbox format. I want to move over and start using Maildir. I know that I can use different MTA's to do the job, but I really like sendmail, and I run additional sendmail servers across the my internal and external networks. I'm probably being anal, but I want to keep my MTA the same across the board. Does anyone here use sendmail + dovecot + maildir? if so what's the best way of going about this? Gabe

Hi, thank to developers for such a flexible imap server. Is solves succesfully my needs to have a single passwd file for clients accessing both imap/imaps and pop3/pop3s protocols (on a diskless mail/web server with NFS maildirs and NFS indexes!). My question: With 1.0-test68 I have to set login_dir=/var/run/dovecot-login (just a dir not under /var/run/dovecot) instead of /var/run/dovecot/login. I guess that imap-login (running with uid=dovecot) can't access /var/run/dovecot/login if it is under /var/run/dovecot because it is set with permission 0700 and uid=root by dovecot. How can I run dovecot with its standard login_dir config? [Dovecot] start_tls on the user and password ldap connection

hi, it seems when dovecot use ldap user and password databases it's not possible to use tls connection and certificate with the ldap connection. wouldn't it be possible to use the same certificate on the ldap connection as used in the ssl_{cert,key}_file parameters in the dovecot conf (or would be possible to use it's own cert in the ldap conf file? yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

[Dovecot] problems with ldap auth

I'm trying Dovecot v1.0-test43 with ldap authentication but can't seem to make it work. I'm getting the following errors in the log: dovecot: Sep 16 19:50:09 Info: Dovecot v1.0-test43 starting up dovecot: Sep 16 19:50:10 Error: Auth process died too early - shutting down What can I do to see where the error is? I have this configuration working with dovecot 0.99.xx . And if I replace the ldap authentication scheme with another one it starts up right. Following some past mailing list sugestions I've also tried removing most of the auth modules from the compilation but it made no diference. hi, I am trying to set up dovecot with digest-md5 as authentication mechanism and openldap as passdb. My problem is ... that I just can't get it working. PLAIN authentication works as expected, but no luck with digest-md5. [Dovecot] transparent proxy

I'm excited to see that dovecot 1.0-test series supports transparent proxy, but that excitement is muted by: - the recommendation to avoid 1.0 at present; - the requirement to use SQL authentication. I guess I could ignore the first, but the second is sticky. How hard would it be to hack a different sort of proxy server cue into the authentication? Perhaps one of: If authenticating via passwd, use a gid as an index into a server table (or perhaps have the group name be a server name), If passwd authentication fails, try a starting the proxy to a specific other server and see if one can log in there. Or something else.. I dunno, I'm just looking not to install a SQL server just for this. mm

[Dovecot] index file corruption

Hello everyone. I am new to the list, so forgive me if this has been discussed already. My configuration is as follows: Fedora Core 3, fully patched through yum through today. Dovecot 0.9.9.13 Postfix 2.1.5 Using Maildir with Mail stored in ~/Maildir My issue is that, for some odd reason the inbox file index gets corrupt, There is no rhyme or reason as to why it happens or when, but a simple rm -rf ~/Maildir/.INBOX fixes everything (I assume because Dovecot rebuilds the index file.) Has anyone else on the list seen this? Is there some workaround for it? Andy

[Dovecot] dovecot 0.99.14 and imaps (SSL) "hangs"

Hello, I just decided to try dovecot again after a long pause, and I must say that I am very impressed with the speed and resource usage, even when running with UNIX mailboxes. However, I have a problem with SSL. Every two minutes the connection is frozen, and the client has to reconnect after it times out waiting for a response from the server. My IMAP client fetches all headers, and then caches all messages in my mailboxes. However, if I do this while connected to dovecot using SSL (imaps, port 993) the connection times out roughly every two minutes, and the IMAP client must close the connection, reconnect and resume operations from where it left off. This makes resynching a 40000 message 300MB folder take VERY long :-) Using the same client, connected to the same server and syncing the same mailbox connecting to regular imap port (no TLS, port 143), everything works smoothly. The very same client, server and mailbox works flawlessly with uw-imapd and SSL. I have turned on rawlog, and everything seems to be OK. I am unable to dump the wire, because it's SSL, so not sure what to do to debug this. One thing I find a bit strange is that /var/run/dovecot/ssl-parameters.dat is a 0 byte file. Is this normal? [Dovecot] pop vs. imap inconsistancy

I am converting from courier and have noticed change in behaviour with Dovecot. I use maildirs with squirrelmail connecting by imap as well as a POP3 client. Courier would set the 'mail status-read' flag for any message which was downloaded with the POP3 interface. Dovecot apparently does not. Is this a bug or intended behaviour? If it is intentional, can it be changed with the config file?

[Dovecot] Outlook Duplicates issue is still killing me

Hi, I have one pop3 client who has three computers, and he has Outlook XP on two, and 2003 on the third. They are all set to leave a copy of messages on the server, and that causes a duplicate message for every message he gets. I then can tell him to uncheck the "leave a copy on the server" box, and pop his mail, and the duplicates will go away for two or three days, only to start up again. I have a stock Fedora Core 2 server with dovecot and Sendmail. I do a nightly yum, so as to stay up2date. My version of dovecot is 1.0-test42. Has anyone else seen this issue? What can I do to fix it, short of permanently unchecking that box in Outlook? Trying to compile Dovecot on Solaris 10. I have tried the 99.14 release and today's 1.0-stable release. Hello List, I am in the process of building a new mail system here. I am hoping to eventually migrate my users from mbox storage to maildir. They have been using mbox forever and would rather get used to maildir slowly. So I have come upon the idea of using namespaces to provide the different mailstores. Since this isn't available in the current stable, or at least I could not figure out how to do it, I have been working with 1.0-test68 since it provides the ability to configure things with the namespaces. [Dovecot] test-68 coredump

I've tried upgrading from test-51 to test-68, with mixed results. It seems to fix the problem I had with imap and Thunderbird getting confused and not showing headers or body for some email. But something in dovecot is coredumping when I select certain mailboxes. Thunderbird just hangs when you select that mailbox, and mutt gets an EOF on the imap socket while "fetching message headers". Other mailboxes seem to run OK. The failing ones _might_ be empty or have only 1 message in them. Removing index files doesn't help. There is a core file in /var/run/dovecot, and file(1) says it's from dovecot-auth, but GDB can't make sense of the core with that executable, and the login has well and truly run when the core happens. (The core doesn't seem to be from the imap process either.) Any clues how I might debug this? [Solaris 2.8, gcc-3.3, dovecot test-68, imap+Maildir, Thunderbird 1.0.2 on OSX and mutt on Solaris]

Hello, if you log in at hotmail.com, gmx, lycos or yahoo, you can see something like "using 1.4mb of 250mb total". Is there any IMAP command to check to current quota usage? Our webmail-interface will not have access to the filesystem to summarize the size of each file, so an IMAP-command would be great. I don't know if this would be a new feature or just part of the Maildir++ quota-system, that is not yet supported by dovecot. Regards Marten

Hello Gang, I am new to dovecot and the only reason (so far) I would like to use dovecot, and in production with 12k+ users, is the fact that it's supposed to be faster and less of a resource hog. Now, sometimes I am really good at reading the documentations but it sometimes happens that one overlooks something. I did read the migration notes three times! My users are in /etc/passwd and I am running dovecot in IMAP only mode. I did put default_mail_env = maildir:~/Maildir in dovecot.conf, then for one user, I did the following: cd ~wash/Maildir cp courierimapsubscribed .subscriptions # Then I edited to remove "INBOX." cp courierimapuiddb dovecot-uidlist The permissions are right, but when I login as this user, I don't see all the folders that had been there before when he was using courier-imap!! When I login to the web interface (we use Squirrelmail) and go to the Folder options, I can't see any folders to subscribe to either! Now my questions: 1. What am I overlooking?? 2. Does someone have a script that can be used to automate the copying of courierimapsubscribed to .subscriptions and that of courierimapuiddb to dovecot-uidlist, and the editing to remove the "INBOX."? I am sure I really don't have to reinvent the wheel, no? Meanwhile I am hitting google, while waiting for your answers. Hello, I'm checking my way to migrate from Courier to Dovecot. Wiki says that "there's currently no easy way to migrate them [the keywords]". Frankly, I lack the information to check if some client is using keywords at all. More importantly, is it OK to assume that when SELECT INBOX returns no \* in OK [PERMANENTFLAGS ...] that the IMAP server does not allow keywords at all? I use Squirrelmail to filter messages, and it's doing this: raw log in: A009 UID SEARCH CHARSET ISO-8859-1 ALL Header X-Spam-Level {4} **** A010 LIST "" "spam" raw log out: * SEARCH A009 OK Search completed. * BAD Error in IMAP command : Unknown command. * LIST (\NoInferiors \Marked) "/" "spam" A010 OK List completed. it goes on like that in the log for every filter. What exactly is the BAD Error there, and is it something I can fix?

We have NFS-mounted user directories which cause significant problems with stale file handles: dovecot: IMAP(uid): fstat() failed with file /home/uid/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.log: Stale NFS file handle (a) why can't it just close the file and re-open ? (b) is there a way to specify with the 'default_mail_env' (or in some other way) the location of **only** the indexes (and let dovecot autodetect all else?). I have already tried 'mmap_disable = yes', but that does not solve the problem, and if I set 'default_mail_env = INDEX=/var/spool/mail/INDEX/%u', I get errors like: IMAP(uid): Failed to create storage with data: INDEX=/var/spool/mail/INDEX/uid I don't want to specify mbox:~/mail/ or mbox:~/Mail/, because some users have one and some the other.

I have a mail account which needs to be accessed by 4-5 people simultaneously through IMAP. As of now I have configured it on the respective clients using the same username and password so we have multiple people accessing the same account through their mail clients simultaneously and it is working flawlessly. Is this alright or can it lead to some problems or corruption of data later ? What is the best way to allow multiple people to access a single mailbox for read as well as write operations ? Thanks,

[Dovecot] Error in rename uidlist while fetching through pop3

My dovecot server seems to randomly begin giving errors to pop3 users who try to fetch their email. Once this begins, they see no more new mail, though the mail is in cur. Hello, I'm interested in trying the dovecot-lda with sieve support. What would be the proper way to test it? I'm currently using a Fedore core 2 server, with spamassassin and procmail. To get the same effect with dovecot-lda, would I put a line like this in my .forward? spamassassin|dovecot-lda I'm just guessing, so please correct me if im wrong. Hello, I recently had the problem, that an index was corrupt. Thus, messages haven't been listed (talking about POP3), but still remained in the filesystem. As there is no SEARCH-command in POP3, dovecot didn't notice that the index is corrupt and didn't rebuild it. The problem is, that a user can't delete messages through POP3 which aren't listed by dovecot. If the maildir size increases, the arrival of new messages will be blocked because the mailbox is full. And the user has no chance to delete it. Regards Marten

Hello, we use dovecot on a regular basis. Sometimes I end up with a user telling me he does not get mail. When I look after the problem, I always find leading blank lines in the mbox file. We are using postfix with dovecot and amavisd as spam scanner. Amavisd never accesses the mbox files directly so this can be ruled out. I suspected procmail but now it happened also with accounts where no procmail is active. I found only a list thread where this happened always, i.e. it was a configuration error. (Meaning the mailbox was correct but dovecot would not read it). Here ist is only occasionally and therefore hard to track . Does anybody have the same problem or has hints to a solution ? We are running postfix 2.1.4 and dc 0.99.10.6 ; just now I am upgrading to pf 2.2.2. and dc 0.99.14. Yours, Jakob Curdes

[Dovecot] Fresh Dovecot Install

Working on an RH9 box. Did not use yum. Downloaded the "dovecot-stable-latest.tar.gz". Uncompressed it, downloaded and installed gcc. Ran the following: ./configure make sudo make install Seemed to have done its thing. I'll admit I am not well versed in using "make" or compiling anything. When I install I usually use yum on fedora machines. This one being an RH9 machine I have plugged yum into the fedora legacy project and it did not let me install dovecot via yum. So I opted for this route. Regardless, if I run 'which dovecot' I see "/usr/local/sbin/dovecot" However now I do not seem to be able to see it run. I get nothing when I: rpm -qa | grep dovecot ps aux | grep dovecot service dovecot status SO AM HAVE MISSED SOMETHING! Is there another script I need to run? Suggestions welcome. Thanks, George

[Dovecot] dovecot 0.99.xx to 1.0-stable how-to?

I realize that there have been some big changes in features and configuration file settings between 0.99.xx and 1.0-stable, so when I went to perform an upgrade on our testing server, I carefully combed through the configuration files and matched up everything I could. I fired up dovecot-1.0-stable and was pleased to see that it was happily running. I attempted to connect to it, and discovered that it wasn't listening to any ports.. then I realized that the app had crashed due to a typo in the config file (oops). Fixed that, started it up, and it was happily running and listening. However, it wouldn't authenticate any users.. Backing down to the 0.99.14 version that we had installed allowed for authentication (against ldap) to work just fine.. Is there anything that I should be looking for within the dovecot-1.0-stable that is dramatically different in regards to user authentication? -Rich

Hello, I am migrating one server to dovecot. The only problem is, that users have logins with @domain as part of their user name. I want to use pam auth (for other reasons, if only for dovecot, I would use mysql, but I need the same password db to be used for other services, like samba). Is there a way to allow this type of login? Just cut everything beginning with @. I can change the source code, but then I don't get nice automatic upgrades. Or can this be done easily with PAM? [Dovecot] Shared mailboxes and accessing MailDir not through IMAP

Hello, I'm testing Dovecot that is part of Debian/sarge (v0.99.14-1). So far so good. I have migrated some mailboxes for testing with success and seems that everything works fine. One thing I do not figure out is, what to do about shared mailboxes, which are the very reason of searching for an alternative IMAP server, The Wiki states that there is some sort of shared mailboxes, based upon symlinks. Well, but since which version actually?? The Changelog stops at 2003-11-08 21:12 ? What I need is a mailbox (maildir) for a contact address (not a real shared mailbox, but several users shall be able to read a mail and delete it after processing). For this, one needs write permission to the mails therein only, the MDA takes care of to make the mails readable for the group. It would be good to see, if somebody had answered a mail already, but that's not required. What I tried is this: I setup all Unix-permissions of the folders (. cur new tmp: u=rwx,g=srwx) and their parents (u=rwx,g=x). Then I placed a symlink into the maildir of all users. Each user caches the INDEXes into an individual /var/ directory, not in the maildirs themselves. (BTW: I wonder why I need to give the group write permission to the base directory '.'). The mailbox shows up and is read-write. Now I wonder, what impact I'm to expect here? Esp. "The only problem is that currently everyone's message flags would be shared as well." (quote from a message of a thread taken from the Wiki) Then there is http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2003-March/001113.html the third item will apply to my situation, I guess. MailDir is (sort of) expected to be read by mutt directly, for instance. Because the mailboxes are located within the users home directories, some of them do this. Do this item mean that Dovecot is NOT expecting that mails are deleted in any other way than through itself? Otherwise Dovecot would find a change in the mailbox and rebuilt the index file regardless whether the change had been originated by another IMAP client or by directly manipulating the maildir. I'm redesigning our mail server which holds several hundred mailboxes - most are local system users and some are virtual domains that we host. I understand that the 1.0x stable release allows for multiple auth mechinisms, so that I could use both PAM for local users and a passwd-file for the virtuals. If I want to stick with 0.99x can I mix and match in a single passwd-file the username/passwd for both local and virtual users? Greetings Running Fedora Core 3 and dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3 as a production mail server for around 30+ accounts. A couple of times a day dovecot just stops. Nothing in the mail log except for Apr 26 00:48:19 sydsrv05 imap-login: Can't connect to auth process at default: Connection refused It's got to the point that I have put a script into cron.hourly to restart the dovecot service every hour. Any suggestions where to start looking please? First off I've just got to say thanks. We just upgraded from UW to Dovecot migrating from mbox to maildir. Wow, what a difference! Load average used to hang around 5.0 during business hours and could get up to 20+ on a bad day. Now we rarely break 1.0! I'm wondering if there's a way to keep track of the last time a user checked their email and whether they checked it using POP or IMAP. We're trying to gather statistics on what protocols our users use and find accounts that haven't been checked for a long time. We used to be able to do some of this with the finger command and the user's mbox. I found a script called "mfinger" that works better with Maildir, but it's designed for Courier. Any ideas? Thanks!

[Dovecot] Why is "UIDVALIDITY changed" fatal?

I've got several users testing Dovecot IMAP at the moment, but some of them are also accessing their mail via UW-IMAP at other times. (I've warned them about accessing the same folder simultaneously via UW-IMAP and Dovecot!) In addition, we have special folders "AutoSpam" and "Trash" that pruned using Washington's "mailutil" automatically every so often. Of course, Dovecot's indexes will become invalid in such cases, but they seem to get rebuilt automatically OK. However, in some cases UW-IMAP seems to change the UIDVALIDITY value (not sure why!) and when Dovecot tries to sync it notices this and gives up with a fatal error on opening that folder. Opening the folder a second time is then OK. I was wondering why Dovecot can't just rebuild the indexes silently in such cases (which seems to be done by returning "0" from the mbox_sync_loop() routine)? Just a note, I backported some larger mbox changes from 1.0-test67. Hopefully works, but if you're going to try it test it well first :) Should fix some issues related to X-IMAP/X-IMAPbase header handling and maybe some other mbox related problems as well.

Hi Perhaps I've been going too far OT in my previous thread or perhaps I just didn't explain my problem clear enough so forgive me for trying again. I have configured fetchmail to fetch my mail from my ISP's POP3-server. [Dovecot] ldap uid with static gid problem

hi, i'd like to use dovecot to authenticate from ldap. in ldap each user has it's uniq uid and gid. unfortunately with postfix we can't use uniq uid/gid since in this case we have ot create all user's home in advance. so we decided to use uniq uid and a common gid in postfix since in this case postfix can create new users maildir and deliver new mails. so i'd like to use everyone's own uid in dovecot, but a common gid (same as in postfix). but how can i do so? i read the wiki, but the problem is if i use: auth_userdb = ldap /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf then i have to define ldap attrib name in dovecot-ldap.conf: user_attrs = mail,,,uid,uidNumber,gidNumber what should i use in the last field in user_attrs? or it's not possible with dovecot to define this? i'd be very said in this case:-( any advice? thanks in advance. yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

[Dovecot] libexecdir and localstatedir problem

Hello, I'd really like to define the finale libexecdir and localstatedir through the configure-script. But the Makefiles are rewriting them. Not $libexecdir is used, but $pkglibexecdir. And $pkglibexecdir is always defined as $libexecdir/dovecot. But I don't want this trailing "/dovecot". Same with localstatedir. I want dovecot to use a certain path. But to this path, a "run/dovecot" is appended. I surely could build some patchfiles to change the Makefiles. But it would be easier, if you could add a new directive --pgklibexecdir to the configure-script. I don't know where the "run/dovecot" is defined, but it would also be very fine to set it in the configure-script (specially when upgrading to new releases) instead of defining them all in the dovecot.conf (base_dir, login_dir). Changes: - LDAP authentication should work finally? - Some header lookup fixes that should fix sort/threading issues - Don't crash with 0-byte size mboxes - Transaction log fixes. Also rotate .log file to .log.2 file, allowing more history and less "transaction log file lost" messages. - SEARCHing multiple headers might have crashed - mbox: When first message was expunged we might have gotten "uid-last unexpectedly lost" errors. - recent flag counter wasn't updated in index file header always even if the recent flags were removed - UIDVALIDITY changes are handled more transparently - Added --rundir configure option (not actually tested, does it work? :) - etc.

[Dovecot] INBOX can't be deleted

Hi, surely it can't and it shouldn't. I'm just wondering why a check for "INBOX" is done in src/imap/cmd-delete.c AND src/lib-storage/index/maildir/maildir-storage.c. The first is clear because it gives an imap-error to the client. But for which case is the check in maildir-sorage.c? Just to be absolutely sure? The reason for me to ask is, because I need to disable deletions for five folders: Drafts, Infected, Junk, Sent and Trash. A certain webmail-interface and spamfilter will rely on these folders, so nobody shall be able to delete or rename them. First I placed the checks in cmd-delete.c. Should I place them in maildir-storage.c additionally? In normal circumstance, the check in maildir-storage.c should never be reached, right? Regards Marten

I'm mainly just curious, but what version of dovecot is considered to be stable enough to be running in a production environment? We're running the 0.99.13 version shipped with FC3 and, while experiencing great performance gains over UW-IMAP, we have hit a couple of snags here and there (random and infrequent characters at the beginning of a mailbox, periodic duplication of a message here and there, etc). I figure we should upgrade to something a bit more current, but I am not sure what the "recommended" verion would be.. Also, perhaps more important, what's the roadmap to getting 1.0 finalized? What's the timeframe? :-) -Rich

If anyone's interested about implementing quota code for Dovecot (there were a few of you before! :), now it's finally your chance to do it quite easily. With the API changes committed today to CVS, it's now much easier to write plugins that modify mail-storage behavior. So, I finally fixed my half-working quota plugin that had been lying there for a while. It implements the RFC2087 quota commands for IMAP, a generic quota API that should allow pretty much any kind of quota implementation, and the actual quota limit checking for saving and copying mails. As an example there's an implementation which just scans through all files in a directory and sums their sizes. Currently it can be made to work only when starting from command line, eg.: export QUOTA=~/mail:storage=1024 export MODULE_DIR=/usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap ./imap The QUOTA variable is passed to the quota implementation. In this case quota-dirsize reads it, figures out that ~/mail is the directory where to count the files, and 1024kB is the maximum for quota. I think I'll change the master process code so that any unrecognized varibles that come from userdb are fed to imap/pop3 processes. That way you could simply make the userdb return the quota value (and set other user-specific settings as well). Maybe the core implementation should be built into Dovecot, while the different quota implementations would be plugins? ..And even better would be if Dovecot's build process was modified so that it's possible to specify with configure script what to compile in and what to compile as plugins.. [Dovecot] File isn't in mbox format - Couldn't open INBOX

While I saw another thread on the list similar to the issue I was experiencing (http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2005-February/006168.html) I was wondering if there was a way around this problem (the thread simply suggested upgrading, but are the later version (specifically the 1.0-test releases) ready for prime time?)... We're periodically having this with some users (not sure what client they are using, but I am pretty sure it is MS Outlook) where the inbox is in near perfect shape except for some extra characters at the beginning of the file. POP or IMAP delivery fails with an error stating "File isn't in mbox format - Couldn't open INBOX". It looks like those characters are of a previous message that was not completely removed from the file, and those characters seem to throw everything out of wack.. It's easily correctable by removing the bogus characters from the beginning of the file, but that gets annoying quickly.. -Rich

Hi I would like to set up a local mailserver but I'm getting lost with all the available options. As I have already decided to use dovecot I hope someone here will be able to point me to the right docs/HOWTO's/... Here's my wish-list: 1) download mail from my ISP's POP3-server 2) scan with spamassassin 3) scan with ClamAV 4) filter messages (mailing lists/sender/...) 5) store messages in dovecot 6) be able to read messages on my desktop (where all of the above will be running) and on my laptop 7) be able to send messages (currently using evolution) from both my desktop and laptop so sent messages are stored in dovecot (the idea is to be able to see all sent messages on both PC's) I have already created a test-account om my ISP's POP3-server, installed and configured fetchmail and dovecot. Exim has been installed as well but I haven't touched it's configuration yet. Running fetchmail manually collects the mail and stores it in /var/mail/m8ram where dovecot finds it. So I would like to know (how to find out) how I can achieve 2), 3), 4) and 7). I have looked around and have discovered that there are many programs that can do some or all of this. But I haven't been able to figure out how to get them to work with dovecot. e.g. I don't understand what I would have to change to dovecot's config if exim or procmail or whatever moves certain messages to different folders (or even where these folders would be created). Perhaps I'm missing a HOWTO that explains all this, if so please let me know.
