dovecot: Jan 14 12:25:49 Error: IMAP(xxxuser): file istream-limit.c: line 85 (_seek): assertion failed: (v_offset <= lstream->v_size) That error message is generated when squirrelmail 1.4.4-rc1 attempts to access this peculiar message partially quoted below. It doesn't happen (after copying the message to our testing account) accessing it through squirrelmail now. But it did. The server is running test61 configured --without-pop3d --with-ssl=openssl and --disable-ipv6 and running on FreeBSD 5.2.1. I'm not sure if this bit of a message is useful, but I have seen that error message in dovecot's log more than just this once. Some additional tests. I tried to add a test connection in the main.c under auth, which should be the main file of dovecot-auth. The test connection is done as the first statement in the int main() function. However, it still reports that the connection fails due to access denied. What should I do?? [Dovecot] maildir and /var/spool/mail

All, Not sure what to do next. Have imap working in that I can see messages in inbox. When I create a folder it won't create one. Looking at maillog shows that I don't have rights to folder /var/spool/mail/.sent or whatever folder I am trying to create. I have procmailrc and dovecot.conf point to /home/Maildir but for some reason something is tied to /var/spool/mail. Of course I am running FC3 and sendmail. I'm in the process of moving from UW-IMAP to dovecot. I'm exploring the idea of using virtual users with dovecot and storing all user information in LDAP. While bouncing this idea off of a coworker, he asked me how we could handle vacation notices and forwards. Currently, we're using a procmail recipe to generate the vacation notice, and the sendmail .forward file for forwards (although most of our forwarding takes place elsewhere so the .forward file is rarely used). These are, of course, dependant on the user having an account on the mail server. How are those of you using virtual users supporting this functionality? Thanks!

However, dovecot-auth always claims that the username/password of mysql server is wrong (access denied by mysql server) during the connection. When I set the password to NULL, it can successfully connect to mysql server! I am 100% sure that I typed the correct password (by copy & paste), and I can successfully use this username/password connect to mysql server by mysqladmin and other mysql clients. I even wrote a C program which also successfully connects to mysql server. FreeBSD 5.2.1 Upgraded to dovecot 0.99.12.1 After authentication failed, I also upgraded OpenLDAP to 2.2.19 Dovecot and OpenLDAP are now the most recent versions in the ports. I can access the LDAP info through the OpenLDAP client without a problem, so slapd seems to be working fine. Both dovecot and OpenLDAP worked fine before the upgrade. I just tried upgrading one of our mail cluster servers to test60 from test57. We have dovecot connecting to 3 different MySQL tables in 3 sql conf files. The error seems to stem from this: Jan 13 14:57:59 svr21 dovecot: auth(sql8): file auth-client-connection.c: line 31 (auth_client_send): assertion failed: (conn->refcount > 1) After this the auth process gets killed with signal 6. The sql8 is the config in use at the time, but can be any of the 3. I take it this is the auth process not liking the 3 auth lookups (refcount > 1)? Hi there, my dovecot is now running normaly, but there is a small problem.... We want to to use the maildir format at the mailstorage. But the imap part of dovecot creates the for mbox specific files, but why? I created a passwd-file for a testuser. At this tme, there is only on line: test2@dev2.abc.de:ujAN28k8.5zV2:99:99:*:*:*:* in dovecot.conf are these interesting lines: auth_userdb = static uid=99 gid=99 home=/vrmd/pop3imap/links2mailboxes/%u/Maildir auth_passdb = passwd-file /vrmd/mailin/conf/pop3imapdb.passdb.txt I think, if a path ends of /Maildir dovecot will autodetect the maildir format. Now i have: auth_userdb = passwd-file /path/file auth_passwd = passwd-file /path/file (same file) dovecot is starting normaly (i think) but a authentification test via telnet doesnt work. We are using a "multi-level" maildir, so i'm not sure about the default_mail_env command. the Maildir for the user testuser1(a)dev.test.de is located here: .../mailboxes /t (first char of the top-domainname) /te (the first both chars of the top-domainame /test.de (the top domain) /dev (the subdomain) /testuser1 (the username) /Maildir actually i'm using this command (I know, thats not complete *smile*): default_mail_env = maildir:/............./mailboxes/%1d/%2d/%d/%n/Maildir How can i name the subdomain? Yesterday a user reported to me that she received a bunch of emails that were not addressed to her. I'm using dovecot version 0.99.11 along with postfix and amavisd-new. I don't know how this happened because each mail file in /var/mail/ is only readable by the user. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before?

Hi, I've got a problem of authenticating users when they've got the % character in their login name. It always returns -ERR Authentication failed. I've done some tests (explained below). 1. the mysql answer to SELECT password FROM users WHERE uid = 'foo%domain.com' is 123 2. the mysql answer to SELECT password FROM users WHERE uid = 'foo(a)domain.com' is 123 3. with a password_query like this : password_query = SELECT password FROM users WHERE uid = '%u' it works fine with foo(a)domain.com but not with foo%domain.com 4. everybody can login with password 123 with a password_query like this : password_query = SELECT password FROM users WHERE uid = 'foo%domain.com' => I don't know what's done with the % character when passed to the %u variable. Can somebody enlight me ? Thanks a lot.

Hi, I have recently been having a small problem with Dovecot (dovecot-0.99.13) not honouring the "maildir_copy_with_hardlinks" config option, specifically when it is set to "no". This results in errors to the syslog looking like: Jan 12 09:59:21 imap imap(dave): link(/afs/.../tmp/1105541958.P1137Q0M41428.imap, /afs/.../new/1105541958.P1137Q0M41428.imap:2,S) failed in maildir_copy: Invalid cross-device link The supplied patch will, when maildir_copy_with_hardlinks=no, rename files inside maildir's instead of hard linking them, hence honouring the configuration option. A word of caution! This all relies on the filenames in maildir being unique (which they should be, and this shouldn't be a problem, but..). It is possible (although unlikely) that renaming the file could destroy a file in the target directory; no checking is done to assure this is not the case! (If you are paranoid you can always write another patch). Yes I am using AFS (openafs specifically) to hold my maildir's, which does not support hard links. However AFS assures that rename operations are atomic so we can use that instead (this may be the case for other filling systems that do not allow hard links). Hi, every now and then it seems as if dovecot-auth zombie's out. When this happens nobody can log in. If I kill all the dovecot-auth processes and then restart dovecot everything seems to work again. I'm authenticating against an openldap server on a debian sarge box so I wonder if this has anything to do with it. All my clients are using Outlook. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. [Dovecot] can not connect to dovecot using ssl

I can connect using imap, but when I try using ssl (imaps) I get a can not connect to server error. I have in my dovecot.conf protocols = imaps imap imap_listen = * imaps_listen = * I DO get a connection when I telnet to port 993 of my server (both localhost and remote work). Any help much appreciated.. Jay

http://dovecot.org/test/ I've been running this for two hours now without problems. I guess it's pretty stable. - Keyword support finally included. Not too well tested, but I couldn't get it to break. Doesn't store the keywords into maildir/mbox yet. Hopefully soon. - Major reorganization of code in dovecot-auth, and not yet finished. Load balancing between multiple auth procsses (ie. auth_count > 1) was before done by connecting to each one's socket separately. Now there's a single socket which a balancer process listens to and distributes the requests to worker processes. What's left to do is make a single auth process support handling multiple auth sections in config file. This makes it possible to: - have ordering-sensitive fallbacking for multiple passdbs - have fallbacking work with non-plaintext authentication - allow for all kinds of new great features more easily. For example we could add PAM-like "required" vs. "sufficient" selection for auth sections, or some rules when each passdb is used (eg. based on username, domain or IP range). After that it should also be easy to run dovecot-auth standalone because it would read its own config file. I'm also planning on making it compatible with Postfix's master process, so you could directly add it to master.cf (actually I think I only have to move one fd from 3 to 6 and it'd work). - Added "passdb" userdb. Basically means that the passdb already returned all the information needed for userdb. With SQL this means you could do: SELECT password, uid AS userdb_uid, gid AS userdb_gid, home AS userdb_home FROM ... - If authentication failed because of some internal error, tell it to client instead of showing a generic "Authentication failed." error. - MySQL driver supports load balancing between multiple servers. Just add a new host=xx to connect string. It's not currently supported to have different usernames/passwords. Probably not worth it? - rawlog code rewritten. Should work better. - If userdb returns non-numeric UID or GID, look it up from passwd/group. - Rewritten message address parser. The old code could have lost some spaces and might have even returned invalid MIME string because of it. This affected only clients which use FETCH ENVELOPE command. - mbox: If lines began with NUL characters, things broke. Also fixed another potential problem with parsing mboxes. As a result hopefully these fix a problem with expunge sometimes leaving a few extra characters to beginning of mbox. - Added mail_debug setting which logs where and how Dovecot is trying to locate mails. Helpful when initially figuring out why Dovecot isn't working right. auth_debug=yes now also logs all SQL queries and LDAP lookups and some other things. - etc.

I check the gcc bug web page page came up with this reference which may explain this behaviour. http://gcc.gnu.org/bugs.html#known - see section "Casting does not work as expected when optimization is turned on" http://mail-index.netbsd.org/tech-kern/2003/08/11/0001.html They claim that this casting violates ISO aliasing rules and the results like crashing are to be expected. Maybe this statement ought to be rewritten memcpy(&offset,data,sizeof(uint64_t)); There is one other statement at mbox-synbc.c:319 (1.0-test59) that may need this consideration. [Dovecot] ldap auth (with user and domain a different places)

Hi, I am trying to use dovecot with my virtual-hosting setup. I have all users in LDAP like uid=user,dc=domain.tld,o=myorganization for the user with the mail-address user(a)domain.tld. This is also the username that user should use for login, but it is nowhere in the ldap-db in this form together, just user and domain at their own places. Is it possible to authenticate with dovecot against such an ldap-directory? After reading docs and comments in the config-file, I think no, but I am not sure. As I read the source, it is not possible just now, but would be, if I could use %d in the searchbase. Or did I understand something wrong? TIA Timo Boettcher

I was just wondering how dovecot interacts with vpopmail. Does it just call the vchkpw and pass the username and password to it then wait for a it to tell dovecot weather the user is vaild or not ? Does vchkpw pass back the users homedir ? PS. My plan is to just replace vchkpw with a script/program of own. that dovecot can call to auth a user again xmail passwd file. And using "auth_passdb = static uid=<uid> gid=<gid> home=<dir template> mail=<dir template>" to fill in all the holes. -- Chris L. Franklin --

[Dovecot] imap catches sig 11 on EXPUNGE

Debian unstable, x86 # dovecot --version 0.99.12 # tail /var/log/mail.log ... Jan 6 16:56:55 gecko dovecot: child 16505 (imap) killed with signal 11 ... When I use squirrelmail, the imap process always segfaults when I try to enter my INBOX group. Squirrelmail produces the following error message: ERROR : Connection dropped by imap-server. Query: EXPUNGE When I use gnus, I can enter the group just fine, but gnus/emacs hangs on exit (100% reproducible, as is the squirrelmail case). Turning on debug info I catch this in the imap log: 37 UID SEARCH UID 1098 NOT SINCE 30 DEC 2004 * SEARCH 37 OK Search completed. 38 EXPUNGE read:errno=0 (hangs until emacs is killed) So in each case, it seems to happen on EXPUNGE. Hello, I don't now wheather this is IMAP or actually dovecot-specific, but I hope you people here knows about this at least: Where are flags like seen/unseen or e.g. message-priority stored? My goal is to mark spam or other filtered by procmail as "seen", so that dovecot doesn't notify MUAs about new mail in IDLE mode. Are there any mail-headers, so I can set these with procmail to accomplish that? Thanks for help, A

[Dovecot] Repair/Cleaup Maildir

After having fought an issue with Courier-imap on FC3 for a week (that is still unresolved), I decided to try Dovecot instead. So far, fingers crossed, the issue has not re-occured. Migrating from courier-imap/sqwebmail to Dovecot/Squirrelmail was reasonably painless but I now have an problem. Is there a utility available to cleanup/repair the maildir tree for each user ? As part of the migration, I copied all of the courierimapsubscribed files to .subscriptions and removed the leading 'INBOX'. This seemed to be enough to get things going. Unfortunately, people who had only ever used webmail didn't have a courierimapsubscribed file. When they next used squirrelmail, a new .subscriptions file was created but didn't contain their folders. I tried to fix this by recreating the subscriptions file for each user and adding in all the .directories in their maildir root. I now have a maildir hierarchy with lots of crud in it. I need a utility to go through and deleted all the files that shouldn't be there anymore and to ensure that the subscriptions files are correct. Does such a utility exist ? If not, can anyone tell me where I can find a good description of what Dovecot expects to find in maildirs so I can write one myself. [Dovecot] Extremely Slow Pop3 Downloads, Evolution 2.0.2

Hello All, We've been running Dovecot for imap for quite some time and have had little trouble with it. However, we recently switched over to using dovecot for pop3 because of simplicity as well as security issues with the older UW based pop server. I've noticed one serious problem. The only client that seems to have any issue at all with the server is Evolution. In pop3 mode, it takes a minute or more to download a few messages on an inbox with 400+ saved messages in it over gigabit ethernet. Over a DSL connection using MS Outlook 2k3 it takes about a minute total for all messages. Similarly with KMail it takes about 5-10 seconds to download all messages in the pop3 box. The messages trickle in with evolution 2.x, I've tried 2.0.0, 2.0.1, and 2.0.2 and all have this problem. I haven't tried the 1.x series as I don't have any linux boxes that old available to test. So apparently, there's two things of concern. 1. The server is definitely fast enough to handle the large mail box. 2. There's some serious incompatibility in Evolution/Dovecot causing for the 14.4 modem email download speeds over lan. We're running Dovecot 0.99.12 on Debian unstable, however 0.99.11 exhibited this behavior as well. If anyone has some hints, I'd greatly appreciate it. It's annoying having to wait 5-10 min to download mail in the morning when one gets into work ;) If there's any other information I can provide, please ask. I use Mulberry 3.1.6 on Windows to read my mails with dovecot 0.99.12 Solaris 9. There are some mail which I cannot read. When I try to open such a mail, dovecot quits and restarts (I can see that with ps, nothing is logged). Is there plans to use libwrap Or is there already some kind of access control i have missed?? What i really want is a mechanism so i can say: If The request comes from "123.121.212.0" dont offer ssl and accept plain else demand ssl and no plain I now have this (almost) in another imap server by xinetd and two ip addresses. I could solve this by iptables or access list on the router but i would prefer to have it in the software itself. Hello, I'm trying to debug search command with Japanese 'ISO-2022-JP' codec. ISO-2022-JP codec needs to keep character cases until convert to UTF-8. For example: * '\033[$B%s\033[(B' means a character sounds 'N' * '\033[$B%S\033[(B' means a character sounds 'Bi' It causes a trouble in searches with Japanese. I found imap/imap-search.c/add_new() makes strings uppercase and fixed. But search results didn't affected.. ;-) I hope I can fix this problem in a few days. But I'm not clear about dovecot's source. When I do that, dovecot-auth crashes when squirrelmail try to login. [Dovecot] Using Dovecot with Thunderbird 1.0 on Macintosh

Hi.. (and Happy New Year).. I tried switching over from Apple's Mail client (applemail) that is part of Panther to using Thunderbird 1.0 and find that all of the folders in my imap mailbox are messed up. Below is what Thunderbird is claiming the folder structure looks like : Inbox Arch Archiv Archive BMW Co E-Bay M Miscellaneous ML Bargains CKF Que Sof Sonn Ideally, the way it looks in Applemail looks more like the following: Inbox Archive BMW CarFax Coupons E-Bay Miscellaneous ML Bargains CKF [and a bunch of others that were missing from Thunderbird] Nextel OpexLD Palm Paypal Quest SW Realtors Registrations+Purchases Schoolpop ... [others] Software Updates Sonnet ... [others] Any ideas on what is going on here? I just moved to DoveCot 0.99.12, but it doesn't appear to make any distance. Also, if I try to pull up any of the weird folders in Thunderbird, it of course complains about the folders not existing.. Any ideas on how to get around this would be much appreciated! I'v set the default_mail_env to maildir:/var/maildir/%d/%u where /var/maildir/ is the root dorectory for my maildir tree and I'm getting the folowing error in the maillog : Jan 3 15:16:58 websrv pop3(roi): unlink(/var/maildir//roi/cur/new:2,T) failed: Is a directory Notice that the %d is missing. If I change to 'default_mail_env = maildir:/var/maildir/example.tld/%u' then it's all working fine only I can't create other virtual domains. If anybody can help me solve this one...

Hello, I wrote a patch for header search about a word over two lines. Please check it. For example, following header string contains a word splitted into two mime encoded block. It's normal behavior of MUAs in CJK environment. [Dovecot] possible bug with mail->get_header and caching?

I don't know if this is intended or not, but here it comes. I have * that copy plugin I was working on * dovecot 1.0-test59 * thunderbird test client My copy plugin looks for the X-DSPAM-Signature header line, and reports it to syslog as such: imap: we have a signature: "X-DSPAM-Signature: <sig>" where <sig> is replaced by what is found in the header line. This only happens when I copy in/out of the SPAM folder (which works fine). Now, when a mail is copied from INBOX to SPAM that doesn't have the signature line, I return an error to the client saying the user can't do that copy since the signature line is necessary. I detect the condition of not having that signature line by checking like this: if (!(signature = mail->get_header(mail, "X-DSPAM-Signature")) { ... return error ... } This works fine, error comes back. Second try, copying a mail that has the header line: works. So, lets do some code changes, disconnect and reconnect to reload the plugin. All of a sudden, copying mails that don't have the header line works too! Uhh? Lets go looking at syslog: imap: we have a signature: "X-DSPAM-Signature: " The only rational explanation I could come up with is that dovecot caches the header line and somehow decided that since it knows about the X-DSPAM-Signature header line mails that don't contain it should have an empty version of it. Well, I can of course test for this (and I actually should anyway, an empty signature isn't useful to dspam), but I do think this is a bug since it makes distinguishing between empty and non-present header lines impossible. Hi, I am using postgresql for my password and user databases. The problem is, that the information needed in the user database is held in more than one table. But it seems to me that dovecot expects to get all the information for mailbox, uid, gid and home in _one_ query. Is there a way to get around this? Maybe even getting some of this information by another way than pgsql (this is more a rethorical question, since I have this information in the DB, but sometimes it is useful to get, for example the location of the mailbox by another way than the uid and gid). But my primary question is if I can set these fields in different queries. I'm trying to figure out how I might set up some virtual hosting accounts for my server. domain1 would be delivered via procmail to ~/Maildir mail directories domain2 would be delivered via postfix to /var/mail/vhosts/domain2/username and similarly for additional domains. There's also one domain that's delivered to another machine, but that's not a dovecot issue. I just mention it for completeness. currently I have only domain1 and only: default_mail_env = maildir:~/Maildir I'm not really sure how to set this up for additional locations of maildir:/var/mail/vhosts/%d/%n/Maildir (This seems right?) Right now I'm wondering if I have to do one of the following: create two instances of dovecot with seperate configuration files? move everything to /var/mail/vhosts/%d/%n/Maildir data structure and the rewrite all my local (~/Maildir) procmail rules to manage delivery.. This is seeming sticky?

[Dovecot] 0.99.1[12] IMAP problems with Apple Mail.app?

Is anyone else having trouble using the Apple OS X Mail.app with a Dovecot IMAP server? With 0.99.11 and 0.99.12 attempting to read certain messages using IMAP or IMAPS seems to put Mail.app into spinning pizza of death mode. Sniffing the connection, it looks like it happens after the client issues a BODY.PEEK[] and the server has responded with the (UID XXXX BODY[] {YYYY}...) and OK Fetch completed. I've only been able to catch it happening with messages that are either (a) Base64 encoded or (b) those that claim to be multi-part/alternative, but only seem to contain a single part. The client acts like it has received the message, since if I kill Mail.app and restart it, I am able to read the problem message from its cache. Is this a Mail.app bug? Is it something about the way Dovecot is responding to the BODY.PEEK[] in these cases? Using Mail.app with the Novell myrealbox.com IMAP I haven't seen problem, even with a test problematic message I redirected there, although admittedly I'm changing the headers by doing the redirection. I haven't gotten 0.99.13rc3 to get past the autotools stage of complaining about AM_ICONV (and a number of AC_ warnings), so I've yet to try it.

I am finishing up getting SSL/IMAP working on our mail server and I notice the Use secure authentication box....very little I can find out about it, except that everyone says NOT to use it and maybe it's only for POP, not IMAP. Can you confirm?...googled you on this. [Dovecot] pop3 and home directory

I have a question regarding dovecot (1.0-test52) and pop3. I have users that do not have home directories, they only have an inbox in /var/mail. When they try to pop their email, dovecot tries to create ~/mail and then fails. Is there a way around this or will all email users need to have a home directory? I have discovered an odd problem; some users are able to connect to Dovecot either via pop3 or imap without any problems. Hi I'm using dovecot on a LAN server. I sometimes read mail from the server itself locally with mutt and sometimes remotely with mutt or mozilla . I would like to avoid typing my password whenever necessary but without writing a plain-text equivalent copy of it locally. It feels quite silly to have to type the password locally becase the imapd does not know that the process is indeed a process of the user tzafrir. It has all the information it neeeds to check that. wu-imapd has something called "pre-authentication": the imapd is run by the user unpriviliged to access mail in the user's home directory. As a bonus this works quite nicely with ssh public key authentication. I know that at least mutt and pine support running a custom command for creating an imap connection. But then again, wu-imapd is built quite, well, differently. Any ideas? -- Tzafrir

Test58 and test59 breaks "compact folders" and "expunge" in thunderbird and evolution. Messages marked for deletion just sit there as if compacting folders or expunging have no effect. Thunderbird continues to behave erratically with dovecot test builds. I haven't been able to test the imap_client_workarounds=tb-negative-fetch option yet as I'm still running test52. Thunderbird displays blank messages when they are opened, but "Edit as new" shows the message contents. After I found out that {CRYPT} doesn't support passwords longer than 8 characters, I decided to switch over to MD5 for user passwords in my LDAP database. However, while I have no problem with Postfix + SASL, Dovecot fails to authenticate. Relevant bits from /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf: user_attrs = mailAddress,,,,, # The search string is identical to what's found in /etc/saslauthd.conf: user_filter = (&(|(uid=%u)(mailAddress=%u))(status=active)) pass_attrs = mailAddress,userPassword pass_filter = (&(|(uid=%u)(mailAddress=%u))(status=active)) default_pass_scheme = PLAIN-MD5 When I try to connect using either KMail or SquirrelMail (which worked just fine before I switched schemes), the following error appears in /var/log/syslog: ldap(user(a)mydomain.tld): password mismatch But when I try 'testsaslauthd -u user(a)mydomain.tld -p longpassword' it authenticates just fine. I have the line 'password-hash {MD5}' in /etc/ldap/slapd.conf, and I used 'slappasswd -h {MD5}' to create the MD5 versions of the passwords. Dovecot is v. 0.99.11. If I can't figure out how to get it to work with MD5, I guess I'll have to go back to CRYPT, but it would be nice to have longer passwords... :Peter

I talked to Timo about this before and even provided the beginnings of a patch but don't have enough time to really do a proper job. Anyway, dovecot doesn't work with recent versions of the GNU TLS library. As a result, I compile the Debian package with OpenSSL. However some of the other libraries used, such as OpenLDAP are linked against GNU TLS so Dovecot is linked against both. And it is suspected this is leading to bugs. That last line actually made it possible for me to be able to log into the server :) I am still getting errors from PAM but it starting to look good. Is there a good HowTo on setting Dovecot to comunicate directly to MySql without using PAM in the middle ? Also, Since Postfix is still not working on my server, I can't actually recive Emails. Is there somewere an example of the files that need to be in the maildir that I can put them in there and test that the email client get's the mail out ? I'm reading through the dovecot wiki pages for virtual hosting with postgresql/postfix/dovecot/debian and it looks pretty nice but I think I'm going to skip the SASL authentication since I'm in a trusted network. I think all I need to do is skip section 5 entirely and bypass all the sasl references in the postfix section. Technically, I don't think any of the SASL has much to do with the dovecot configuration.

I'm facing a problem with dovecot 1.0 test-59; ever since I installed it and use it my random pool is always depleted whenever someone opens an imap connection. This wouldn't be too bad if the machine was used interactively, but since it is not and other services read directly from /dev/random those are sometimes blocked due to dovecot depleting the pool by reading /dev/urandom. Thus my question: is it really necessary to use random numbers from /dev/urandom for temporary filenames? And even if, couldn't it use less? It apparently uses 8 bytes every time. johannes

There are constantly pretty basic questions in this list (and in my inbox) about how to get user authentication work correctly. This means that the documentation how it all works is either bad, or people don't find it easily. Any ideas how to improve it? I have set up a directory (/var/local/virtualdir/) as the maildir with a special user/group (virtualmail) and in it I create directories for each domain (example1.tld, example2.tld etc) and sub dir's for each mailbox). Only at the moment, apart from the first one, they are all created as with user root as the owner. How important is to have all the directory tree owned by the same user group (virtualmail:virtualmail) ?

[Dovecot] Deleting a message through IMAP

I have been having a problem with the test releases...I am now using Test 59. When I delete a message using SquirrelMail (IMAP) the message stays in the message list....but you can't open it anymore because it can't be found, if I logout and log back in...the message is gone from the list. I thought it could be a problem with the cache, so I added mail_never_cache_fields = MessagePart Envelope Body only to recieve Dec 24 09:23:34 news dovecot: IMAP(admin): mail_never_cache_fields: Invalid cache field name 'Body', ignoring Any ideas? This problem has plagued me for a while and I always go back to using the and older test like 22 and the problem isn't there... Doug

I have a dovecot installing working quite well for around 1000 users using passwd-file authentication. I'm moving to LDAP and would sure love to be able to migrate the existing MD5 passwords. I've tried using ldapmodify to set "userPassword" to {CRYPT}$1$H8JE0k5X$y.ptShgYbOgWF.99lX88N1 and {MD5}$1$H8JE0k5X$y.ptShgYbOgWF.99lX88N1 In both cases, ldapmodify exits without errors but I cannot bind using the new password. [Dovecot] bidirectional synchronization of dovecot-managed maildirs

Hello and happy holidays, I've been thinking about high performance bidirectional synchronizing the mail on my laptop (which is frequently disconnected) and my workstation at work (which is always on and receives all inbound mail). Both run dovecot on top of maildir. I've been playing with offlineimap, unison (which I already use for all my non-mail files), as well as the gnus agent (in IMAP "disconnected mode"). None of these solutions is really satisfactory: * offlineimap treats a message refile between folders as a delete-plus-resend; * unison doesn't understand the semantics of flag changes at the end of files in maildirs; it also has to stat all the files (which can become slow) to detect changes; * gnus agent can't refile messages between folders when in disconnected mode. Perhaps there are better disconnected IMAP modes available for other MUAs, but, it seems like a more general solution would be appropriate. In particular, the "uniq" field of a maildir filename is an easy way of tracking the identity of a message as it gets refiled. My question: would it be difficult to patch dovecot so that it maintained the *same* uniq when copying messages between folders? What about adding hooks that get triggered whenever dovecot copies or deletes messages? These hooks could log the changes. Later, when one tries to sync, one merges the changes from both replicas and then applies them. I'm aware that dovecot has an option to do copies as hardlinks, which is a good start, but still requires one to stat the files to discover which have the same inode. This is *much* slower than simply listing the directories and comparing maildir "uniq" fields. I'm aware that this invariant wouldn't be maintained if other programs modified the maildirs under dovecot's nose, but I'm willing to exclude this possibility. Suggestions? I will probably integrate Tom's idea about storing the messages until a cron-job picks them up at night by just storing signatures into mysql, in which case its easy to do with a single query: INSERT INTO new_spam (user, signature, isspam) VALUES (<user>, <signature>, <isspam>) ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE isspam = <isspam> with given values for <user>, <signature> and <isspam> and a key on (user, signature). For now, however, calling dspam for every message works good enough for me, and seems to work. Regards, Johannes

Hi, I have a user who is getting a strange error when popping his mail over a DSL line. The error in my log file is as follows: file client.c: line 237 (client_send_line): assertion failed: ((size_t)ret == str_len(str)) I can POP his mail just find here locally connected to the server via 100bT, but over his DSL link, he gets this error. His mailbox size is 24MB, and he is using outlook w/ the option 'leave a copy of messages on the server'. He has Outlook 2003 and we use Dovecot 1.0 test 42. Is there some way to add a maildir folder to a mbox hierarchy? My folders are all mbox, but I want to migrate some client-side mail from a client (PMMail2000) that stores messages as individual files, and it might be easiest just to dump all the files into a maildir directory with suitable naming.

I use bogofilter and a script or two to manage junk mail on my home box (fetchmail from POP3, postfix and procmail to local maildirs, mutt for MUA). Since these mails are just files I figured it never mattered that I moved them from one folder to another via a bash script, but some posts on this list make me think I shouldn't do that on a server running dovecot (IMAP). What I currently have is a MakeJunk folder (maildir) that I drop spam that was missed into, then a cron job runs mail in that folder through bogofilter and moves it to a Junk folder. Is it sane to do that with simple mv, or do I need to use some special imap command? Confused, Todd

I've just installed Dovecot 0.99.12.1 onto a White Box EL 3 server. I'm mostly following the email server setup instructions at http://www.wanderingbarque.com/mailserver.html and getting Dovecot to work is the last task to complete. I've compiled Dovecot with LDAP support. I'm authenticating Postfix via SASL to the LDAP database just fine, and I also authenticate and manipulate LDAP info from JAMM very well, too. However, Dovecot authentication seem to hang up when a correct password is submitted (POP or IMAP... it doesn't matter). Dovecot's log shows that it eventually times out the client, although the client never seems to get wind of this: pop3-login: Dec 19 22:13:08 Info: Disconnected: Inactivity [192.168.0.6] I know that Dovecot is connecting to the LDAP server because if I mess up the Dovecot LDAP password in the dovecot.conf file I get an authentication error (as I should): dovecot-auth: Dec 19 20:52:19 Error: LDAP: ldap_simple_bind_s() failed (dn cn=dovecot,dc=dillo,dc=info): Invalid credentials Again, if client submits an incorrect email account password everything works as it should: Dovecot tells the client that the password is incorrect, over and over, if necessary. However, if the password is entered correctly then Dovecot hangs up for good. --Richard

[Dovecot] Postfix + dovecot-auth

I wrote a patch to Postfix which now supports SMTP AUTH using dovecot-auth. This time it doesn't need any Dovecot libraries and it's backwards compatible with Cyrus SASL by default. You'll just need to set one variable in Postfix config file to enable it. Patches and instructions in: http://dovecot.org/patches/postfix/ Not very well tested yet though. And it doesn't work with 1.0-test59, you'll need to have at least today's nightly snapshot.

[...] OpenBSD should have strtoull starting from about version 3.2.

I get a few messages of this ilk each day: Dec 16 01:56:31 aurora dovecot: IMAP(doug): Corrupted index cache file /home/doug/Maildir/.users.joe/dovecot.index.cache: indexid changed I usually address this by deleting dovecot.* in the directory of issue. I was thinking that I could instead just have the server delete these files and attempt to recreate them, and skipping that error message unless the re-created files are also corrupted. Howdy all, Dec 19 14:24:53 dev imap(seb): Error indexing mbox file /var/mail/seb: LF not found where expected I just installed version dovecot-0.99.12.1 for the first time on FreeBSD 4.10 stable. This error occurs when I try to check my mail from a remote client and I have new messages. Here is my configuration: http://unf.be/dovecot.conf It's very close to the default install. In attempts to remedy the problem, I set "mail_read_mmaped = no", but the problem persists. Uh... I'm trying to debug an application and keep running into this: DEBUG: Sending: 1 AUTHENTICATE CRAM-MD5 DEBUG: Sent 25 bytes DEBUG: Read: 1 NO Authentication failed: Unsupported authentication mechanism DEBUG: Read: * BYE Disconnected for inactivity. So is this really asking for "digest-md5" or am I S.O.L? IIRC these are different protocols, but it's a bit early for my head to get this together.

Hi. I aim to provide pop3 and imap services to a few users. At the moment I only offer imap for squirrelmail users. However, I can't login successfully for pop3. It appears to be trying to auth against PAM, rather than directly using the passwd-file. Thoughts?
