Hello, I borrowed dovecot parser for email addresses and going to use it in new perl module as replacement for Email::Address. During implementation and testing I found bugs in dovecot parser & generator. So I'm sending my patches together with tests. pread() failures when using mdbox on btrfs

(Note: I am not subscribed to this ML, so please be sure to CC me in replies.) Hello, I see a strange bug when running dovecot under btrfs with a mailbox in mdbox format. At some point, which can take a few minutes or more than a day, dovecot starts logging pread() failures, like so: Apr 02 23:43:42 thetick dovecot[570]: imap(marcec): Error: pread() failed with file /home/marcec/.mdbox/mailboxes/LinuxAudio/User/dbox- Mails/dovecot.index.log: Input/output error These would trigger when getmail runs (which in turn is configured to use dovecot-lda). It's only ever the *.index.log files, and it would usually happen to the same one many times in a row. I tried a variety of options, but the only one that helped was to convert the mailbox from mdbox to maildir. I have not seen any pread() failures in the two weeks since. I originally wrote to the btrfs ML, see the thread at [0], in particular my messages [1] and [2], for additional details, including references to what little I could find on the web. However, nothing much came of that thread, so I am now posting here. Hi, I have error log entries like dovecot: lmtp(22155, mail): Error: user mail: Mail access for users with UID 8 not permitted (see first_valid_uid in config file, uid from userdb lookup). This obviously tells me that the user mail (UID 8) is trying to access the LMTP daemon. How can I find out why he is doing so and how I can get rid of this error message? ot: migrating TB user's email to new laptop

another OT: setting up new W10 laptop with TBird: user has three accounts, several hundred emails on old laptop BUT NO LONGER on server two of the accounts are on my Dovecot server, one on ISP server what's best way to transfer local emails: transfer TBird files laptop to laptop ? or, is there some way to sync old laptop to server, then retrieve on new laptop ? thanks, V

Unable to view shared mailbox

Hi All, I have a mailing list I'd like to archive and share with a handful of users. The users are all in OpenLDAP. 10-auth-system.conf.ext is setup with "driver=pam" so it appears anyone in LDAP who already is able to SSH into the server may also connect to dovecot with same username/password they use in LDAP. I have a shared mailbox directory called LISTS_Archive. The system directory is /home/shared_imap. I can connect to dovecot using LDAP credentials (using Thunderbird) and this shared folder (LISTS_Archive) is grayed out. I assume I have acls wrong? What I want is for users in LDAP to access the LISTS_Archive imap folder as a shared folder for everyone. Only R/O access however (which is 'lr' in acl file I think). Would someone please point out what I've missed? I was trying to set up a replacement laptop running W10/64 to replace a Win7 laptop, installed TBird, and, attempted normal setup: IMAP StartTLS 143, SMTP StartTLS 587 (like on old laptop), and, to cut a long story, eventually discovered it won't work till I changed IMAP SSL/TLS 993 ? SMTP seems OK, only IMAP didn't (I recall earlier similar type of issues with either Outlook or OE or WLive?) is this the self certified part ? or what is it ? what's the best way around ? or just leave it as 993 ? thanks for any hints , pointers or even words of encouragement

Error: Filename keeps changing

Dear all, Two days ago, my ldap server (for authentication) crashed and I had to set up a new one. Everything works fine except the mailbox for one user (let's name him debugger). Accessing the mails via a mail client (Roundcube, Thunderbird, etc...) give the same error. Dovecot runs on a virtual machine and the mailboxes are stored via a CIFS-share on a NAS. I rebooted both machines, checked the filesystem (no errors), CIFS-share, directories and mail files are readable and writeable by dovecot user (vmail on the mail server). The mails are intact, cat <filename> shows the full mail. I'm baffled, any suggestions? Growing number of dovecot processes

OS is CentOS 6, dovecot-2.0.9-19 Just started using this server as a replacement for an old Debian server running an old dovecot. The number of dovecot processes just grows and grows until there are 100 concurrent login processes (we have maybe 40 or 50 users), and then nobody can log in any more. A reload resets, but the number of stuck processes climbs very quickly. We're authenticating against an OpenLDAP. Unfortunately, this system is not connected to the Internet so I cannot paste logs or output of commands. No implicit INBOX with mailbox_list_index = yes?

Hello all, I am running a Dovecot Cluster (2.2.13 and 2.2.23 show the same behaviour) using dsync replication (as described here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Replication) In addition to that I allow users to share mailboxes using IMAP ACLs. My problem is that I need to set "mail_shared_explicit_inbox = yes" if I want my users to see Inboxes of other users. solr does not index files in the mailbox

Hello! I startet solr and configured dovecot to use it. We're running Dovecot with SOLR Lucene 5.5 and we have several errors like badMessage: 414 for HttpChannelOverHttp@5216da8e{r=0,c=false,a=IDLE,uri=-} 20.5.2016, 14:10:16 and URI is too large >8192 in our solr-logfile. I don't know if this is a problem in SOLR or in Dovecot, so I just bring it to your attention. Hi Timo, The below solved the problem for me as far as I can tell I was getting a EPIPE about 1:30 dsync runs over the socket. Hi, It appears that dsync closes the file handle once it gets the F (finish) response even if it hasn’t received the X (done) response. If the X (done) response gets delivered in another write this will generate EPIPE in the connected process. This is much easier to replicate over SSL, however the trace is provided without SSL since its easier to see whats going on. Thanks J. mailbox.auto ignores dovecot-uidlist.lock

I'm trying to lock down a maildir from modifications using dovecot-uidlist.lock, but when a user with mailbox.auto = create logs in, then the folder is created regardless of dovecot-uidlist.lock existing or not. Is there no way to prevent dovecot from touching anything in a maildir folder? -- Tom

I have been trying to follow the "instructions" at "http://blog.iandreev.com/?p=1975#dovecot" and they seem to be pretty good. everything works until I get to the part were I test the dovecot installation and it keeps failing. I get an AUTH fail error at the "telnet localhost 110" login commands I am trying to setup 3 domains: domain1.us domain2.com domain3.com I have 4 users entered in the /etc/dovecot/users file I followed the instructions for creating an encrypted password but don't think it is correct and I don't have the knowledge to say why. Just doesn't feel right. I admit I am over my head and the learning curve just got exponential - any help at all would be really appreciated. synchronous replication based on priority

Hi, i see in this page (http://blog.dovecot.org/2012/02/dovecot-clustering-with-dsync-based.html) : "Optionally the replication plugin can also support synchronous replication of new mail deliveries. In this way it connects to replication-notify UNIX socket, tells it to replicate the user with sync (=highest) priority and waits until it is done or replication_sync_timeout occurs. The IMAP/LMTP client won't see an "OK" reply until the mail is replicated (or the replication has failed). The synchronous replication probably adds a noticeable delay, so it might not be acceptable for IMAP, but might be for LMTP." is this fonctionnality effective for LMTP ? If so, where is the config ? The wiki says that replication is asynchronous. Reloading dovecot and postfix after updates

Recently someone used webmin to update dovecot, which went fine. However, after the update no one could login to the mail server because of the mismatch in the versions between what was installed and what postfix was expecting. Other that bapping the person on the head and saying “don’t do that” is there anyway to force a reload of postfix after dovecot reloads? Like adding a postfix reload to the dovecot rc.d script or someway of linking them so that if either version changes they both get reloaded? (I don’t even use webmin myself, so maybe it’s even possible through it?) I mean, it’s unlikely to happen again at this point, but still… -- "...and Digby considered how much he liked salt..."

Hello, I get the following errors when I move large e-mails (i.e. about 15MB) into mail files. I know this may not be a dovecot error, but any pointers why it is doing this so that I can report it to Oracle. Dovecot configuration: Home dir not found

Hi, I've my mail solution configured on Server-A with webmail, Dovecot and Postfix. I'm trying to deploy only Dovecot and postfix on Server-B to reduce IMAP/POP3/SMTP load on server-A. Please note server-B does not mailboxes. It should be mapped to mailboxes on server-A. While the LDAP query from Server-B to Server-A is going successfully, the imap service on Server-B is throwing the below error. imap(user(a)example.com): Debug: Home dir not found: /mail/vmail/**/ I guess imap is looking for *home dir* in server-B. How do I tel the imap that home dir is on server-A and not server-B. Please let me know if there exists a configuration parameter for the above.. Thanks Divakar

SSL on doveadm port

I have been attempting to setup ssl on the doveadm port. So far this works fine, as long as the global certificate is used. I wanted to use a different certificate, one that machines the machine name, instead of the generic mail certificate, but I have not been able to figure out how to do this. Attempts to add the certificate in the services section with the ssl = yes option, cause syntax error, and dovecot doesn't start. Creating a protocol doveadm section with it, is ignored, and setting up a local section with it in it, is ignored also.

Dovecot 2.1.7 randomly lost emails

Hi Dovecot 2.1.7 Postfix 2.9.6 Maildir backend, emails filtered by a Postfix frontend (Sqlgrey, Amavis). Lmtp delivering emails using a simple sieve script. Ubuntu 12.04 VMware virtual server. When email are CCed to other recipients on the same domain (the same backend), sometimes they are lost. We hosts approx. 1500 mailboxes, the problem occurs one or two times a day. Recently I changed the frontend, the previous one was delivering one email for each recipient, we had a couple of error per year, we thought it was due to client-side error. The frequency increased with the new frontend, no more “splitting” messages for more than one recipient. Hi, Thank you very much for creating and maintaining dovecot! In my scenario, I want to use the password hash algorithms provided by libsodium: https://download.libsodium.org/doc/ So my difficulty is to have dovecot support libsodium's hash algorithms, particularly: crypto_pwhash_scryptsalsa208sha256_str On the sodium maillinglist I asked for help and received an adjusted dovecot code, which exactly does what I need. You find it here: https://github.com/jedisct1/core/tree/scrypt-argon2 Obviously I need to apply these changes everytime I upgrade to a new dovecot version now. Automatic packages for Dovecot v2.3

Hi, The Xi repository for v2.3 is now public. The information is updated here: http://wiki2.dovecot.org/PrebuiltBinaries#Automatically_Built_Packages Xi now modifies the version string in the Dovecot sources. This way `dovecot -n` output includes the Xi package version. This is currently only true for the v2.3 packages though. I am still testing a new v2.2 builder that follows both the master and latest release branch. Packages from the release branch are published in a separate repository, so that a more stable package stream is obtained; it is only updated when the developers start working on making a release. The intermittent beta or rc release tags on that release branch are recognized and reflected in the package versions. If a new release branch is detected, the the development packages for the master branch get an alpha version with a lower version digit that is one higher than the upcoming release. For example, when a release-2.2.25 branch is created, packages from the master branch will get version 2.2.26~alpha0-1 in anticipation of the next release in this series. Packages from the release branch will have version 2.2.25~beta0-1 until the first release tag is seen. Regards, Stephan.

Undeletable mailboxes

Hi I have to maintain a dovcot installation where users may access there mails through IMAPS and/or via self-developed portal. >From time to time users complain about mailboxes showing up they have deleted bevor. ACLs over imapc

hello i've struggled various times trying to setup shared mailboxes to no avail. the same setup with local file access works imapc seems to work with generic shared mailboxes nevertheless, i never managed to get a working setup with both user-defined acls and imapc has anyone been successful in doing so ? is this supposed to work ? i've been experimenting with dovecot 2.2.9 and 2.2.22 and never saw any imap acl commands issued by the builtin imap client. thanks abi(a)oleane.net

Hello, Using the latest dovecot version, selecting a non-existing mailbox with non printable characters encoded in utf7, the mailbox doesn't exist response contains the folder name encoded in utf8. Is that legal regarding the rfc ? If yes, how the client can be aware of the used encoding ? Thanks.

Hi all! I'm stuck again, let me start with explaining my setup. The PassDB and UserDB is LDAP (FreeIPA) and I'm using ldap mail attribute to search after the recipient so one user can have multiple mail aliases. So far so good. Next is to have an catchall(a)domain.tld, that is done via an static userdb backend (I know you are strongly against catchall adresses), and they are delivered to public folders (${mail_location}/domain.tld). I also use address extension so sort a mail to correct folder (+ sign). Now I need to fix so mail to <mail attr>-sievetest is handled by the user assigned to <mail attr>, is this somehow possible? //Robban

I have just used Squirrel web client to re organize some old emails to subfolders. that worked OK, EXCEPT, all these emails are now in order that I have moved them rather than original date, is that some 'simple' way to re-sort them back by original date ? thanks for any pointers, sorry for dumb question Voytek

Is there a way to override Sieve's "not sending notification for auto-submitted message" behavior?

Goal: 1) Setup a Google Calendar entry for a biweekly task 2) Configure the email notification schedule 3) When the email notification from Google arrives have Sieve send a notification to an alias I have setup for my cell provider's email to text messaging gateway 4) Receive text message I know there are other products which likely handle this better, but I'm specifically attempting to replicate old behavior by getting text message reminders when a specific Google Calendar event occurs. The problem I'm having is that Sieve is attempting to help by NOT sending a notification for emails that it finds are automatically generated. I didn't found a lot of information when I searched for additional details, but I didn't find an earlier message thread on this list that led me to believe that the default behavior is likely chosen as some sort of safety net to prevent common issues from occurring. What I would like to do is override this behavior at some level (per rule, per user, system-wide, whatever) to allow for Sieve notifications when emails matching a specific pattern are detected regardless of whether they are auto-generated or not. I already found mention in the documentation[1] that the editheader extension refuses to remove the Auto-Submitted header, so setting up a per user or global rule to do just that wouldn't help. I also haven't come upon a way to simply modify the value for the Auto-Submitted header, so that doesn't look to work in this situation either. Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this? I configured Dovecot on our mail server under Centos 5.3 (I think) some while ago now (about 2 years) and, to the best of my knowledge,it had been working correctly all that time. However, one of the team wanted to use webmail while away from base and found that, although he could receive emails OK, he was unable to reply or send fresh emails. When he pressed Send he got a message “Authentication failed" in a pop-up box. He assured me that sending mail had been working and I was certain that I had tested that aspect when I was setting Dovecot up, at least for local mail. I tried to send email from my Dovecot account and had the same problem. Our MTA is sendmail and that is not configured to authenticate on outgoing mail, The configuration for sendmail hasn’t changed at least since the last update in 16 March 2015 (sendmail 8.13.8-10.el5_11). Dovecot uses php-5.5.5 in this set up. Long delays when deleting a message in inbox

Hi, Since recently, there's a long delay when deleting any message from my inbox folder. This affects deleting and moving messages, but only the inbox of a single mailbox. The delay is a few seconds. Other operations work instantly. The server is Ubuntu 14.04 running Dovecot version "1:2.2.9-1ubuntu2". The filesystem is local ext4. Director ignores nologin, reason etc.

I want my director to do all authentication, but it ignores the nologin and reason etc. fields returned by my director password_query I have my director password_query returning proxy=y, password=X, master=XXXX, pass=XXXX It works fine, but even if nologin is Y and 'reason' is set, the user still gets proxied to the backend and gets to login? -- Tom

autoexpunge wildcard mailbox from userdb

Was excited to see that wildcards are now possible on autoexpunge in the 2.2.24 release. However I'm trying to configure these from the userdb lookup and it doesn't appear to be working. if I set in 15-mailboxes.conf mailbox Trash/* { ... autoexpunge = 10m } everything works.. however if I return =namespace/inbox/mailbox/Trash/*/autoexpunge=10m via userdb - it does not. Logs say: Debug: Unknown userdb setting: plugin/namespace/inbox/mailbox/Trash/*/autoexpunge=10m Is what I am trying to do even possible? Thanks Leon

There are .debs available for version 2.2 both from backports and ix.dovecot.fi, but neither seem to have the antispam plugin built for version 2.2. Anybody know why, and (if there is no particular reason) how to get dovecot-antispam in a proper .deb package for dovecot-2.2.* ?

issues with doveadm sieve commands

Hi This is dovecot-pigeonhole 0.4.13 and dovecot 2.2.23 at FBSD 10.3-STABLE. I am used to run doveadm sieve commands for some time now whenever updating a sieve script. Recently those commands fail with a user set explicitly, e.g.: mail> doveadm sieve list -u test doveadm(root): Error: User doesn't exist When asking for all users, I do not run into any error: mail> doveadm sieve list -u '*' user1 default ACTIVE [snip] test default ACTIVE mail> doveadm sieve list -A user1 default ACTIVE [snip] test default ACTIVE That is true for all doveadm sieve commands, but other will work, like: mail> doveadm user -u test userdb: test user : test mail : mdbox:/—path-to-maildir--/test Hmm, any idea what is going on? Password database extra fields and SQL

Hi everyone, first post to the list, be gentle with me! Perhaps I'm missing something here, but it appears to me that many password database extra fields currently aren't much use inside SQL queries? All boolean fields like nologin/nodelay/nopassword are set if the column is present in the returned query, regardless of value (including NULL) For example, say you have a query like: password_query = SELECT hash AS password, NULLIF(active = 1, 'y') AS nologin FROM users WHERE name = '%u' Then nologin will always be set for this account, there's no realistic way to toggle the flag. Has anyone come across any workarounds for this problem that don't sacrifice efficiency by performing multiple lookups? I was considering what would happen if dovecot treated NULL fields as not present, but that immediately conflicts with advice to set password to NULL to satisfy the field requirement on nopassword. Any thoughts? -- Dave

I dimly remember some Windows clients preferring either "LOGIN" or "PLAIN" style mechanism. Doveadm Replicator problem with PAM passdb

Hi Everyone, We are running two CentOS 7.2 servers with Sendmail 8.14.7 V10 and Dovecot 2.2.10 installed on both and are trying to configure Master-Master Replication using doveadm replicator. We are using system users with PAM authentication but are receiving the following fatal error when dsync tries to run: doveadm(user): Fatal: /var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb: Configured passdbs don't support crentials lookups (to see if user is proxied, because doveadm_port is set). Please could someone confirm whether it is possible to configure replication using PAM passdb as the above error seems to suggest it isn't but we have come across various people online who seem to have it working. I don't know whether we need to create a master user or whether we need to create a separate password file with a directory of all of our user's passwords? We do have all the user passwords as they are only internal accounts that we are servicing. managesieve proxying not working

Hi, I'm setting up the directors for proxying pop3/imap/lmtp/sieve. pop3/imap/lmtp proxying work fine, but sieve not working. The error messages in maillog look not using proxying but local passdb. So these devices try to log in with AUTH PLAIN, then even after a successful login they want to log in again with USER, which gets rejected. The only solution here seems to be giving back -ERR to the client's AUTH command, which makes it try USER instead. I'm not aware of any configuration options which makes this possible. Option to not add "Received" header ?

Hi everyone, I use Dovecot in lmtp mode to receive mails. I would like an option to tell Dovecot to not add a "Reveived" header on each server (I use a director, so Director also adds this header). Is it possible to do this ? Or could it be a future feature ? Thank you. Florent

apt pinning specific dovecot version

I currently have the dovecot-core package from wheezy-backports pinned on one of my servers to version '2.2.9', which has been working great. I now want to upgrade that to the newest version under wheezy-backports which is: dovecot-core (1:2.2.13-11~bpo70+1) but I can't figure out how to get do it. I've tried a few different formats of the name but apt-get update then apt-get dost-upgrade doesn't pick up the new version - it ignores it when trying to do an update. This is what I've got in my apt preferences and pin files... /etc/apt/preferences Explanation: Stop ALL wheezy-backports updating system. Package: * Pin: release a=wheezy-backports,n=wheezy-backports Pin-Priority: 100 /etc/apt/preferences.d/dovecot.pref Explanation: Promote wheezy-backports version of Dovecot only Package: dovecot-core /2\.2\.9/ Pin: release a=wheezy-backports Pin-Priority: 500 Can anyone advise how I get it to pull the newer version?? I was (perhaps one of) the people who reported "reappearing emails" with 2.2.10 in the context of Maildir with replication under CentOS 7. I had spent a great deal of time making it reproducible, difficult because there was a timing element. In that context, 2.2.23 absolutely fixed the problem which was absolutely related to a timing issue with replication. If I remember right, this person was reporting a similar-sounding problem, but it did not involve replication and was not under CentOS 7. Creating a script that reproduces the problem is an important first step. Good luck.

Hello Dovecot users, The most important feature that this new release adds is the IMAPSIEVE capability, which allows executing Sieve scripts at IMAP events. It also adds the ability to obtain trace logs from Sieve execution at actual delivery (or from IMAP), rather than only using the sieve-test command line tool. This release also fixes a bug in the Sieve extprograms plugin that has been bothering a few people for a while now. Changelog v0.4.14: * The address test now allows specifying the X-Original-To header. + Implemented the Sieve imapsieve extension and its IMAP counterpart (RFC 6785) as a set of plugins. This allows running Sieve scripts at IMAP activity, rather than at delivery. There are also facilities for the familiar sieve_before/sieve_after administrator scripts. A user script is defined for a mailbox using an IMAP METADATA entry, whereas administrator scripts are configured using mailbox matching rules defined in the plugin settings. + Adjusted the Sieve ihave extension to allow capability tests to be performed at runtime. This way, scripts can be written that work both at delivery and from IMAP. + Implemented support for runtime trace debugging. This means that detailed information about which commands, actions and tests are performed is written to a file. That file is created in the configured directory, but only if that directory exists. This way, a particular user can be easily singled out for debugging. This works much like the Dovecot rawlog facility. The trace output is identical to what is produced using sieve-test with its "-t" command line option. + Added a "sieve_user_email" setting that configures the user's primary email address. This is mainly useful to have a user email address available in IMAP, where envelope data is unavailable. + Implemented the dovecot-specific "vnd.dovecot.report" extension. This allows sending report messages in the Message Abuse Reporting Format (RFC 5965). - extprograms plugin: Fixed epoll() panic caused by closing the output FD before the output stream. - Made sure that the local part of a mail address is encoded properly using quoted string syntax when it is not a dot-atom. help with sieve

Dear Dovecot / Pigeonhole community, I have a very specific issue, but trying to solve this for a full day, I am now getting so bold from pulling my hairs out, I thought it was time I asked for help. I hope this is a good place for that. At my hosting provider, who have been extremely helpful by the way but are not specifically skilled in Sieve, I have a catch-all address set up: *(a)domain.org (where * is literal), with a sieve script to control how messages are forwarded. Currently my rules are of the form: if address :localpart :is ["To","Cc","Bcc"] ["name1", "name2", ...] { ... } This works most of the time, but sometimes the messages are not directly addressed to me and so they slip through the filters. I figured that using envelope would solve this, so I require envelope and then do: if envelope :localpart :is "To" ["name1", "name2", ...] { ... } But this fails. After endlessly trying different combinations I figured out that the reason for failure is that the envelope believes the "To" is actually "*(a)domain.org", so it is never going to match any of the names. However, the following test succeeds: if header :contains "Envelope-To" "name1@" { ... } From this I deduce that a previous script has already done the conversion from name1 to *, and at the point where my sieve script is run the envelope picks up the *(a)domain.org address, leaving the Envelope-To header for what it is. But I am new to this. Is that likely to be the case? Is it a common sieve set-up? And most importantly, is there a better way around the issue than testing header :contains? With kind regards, Paul

This makes it less likely to reach the timeout and cause duplicate deliveries. * LMTP and indexer now append ":suffix" to session IDs to make it unique for the specific user's delivery. (Fixes duplicate session ID warnings in stats process.) + Added dict-ldap for performing read-only LDAP dict lookups. + lazy-expunge: All mails can be saved to a single specified mailbox. + mailbox { autoexpunge } supports now wildcards in mailbox names. + doveadm HTTP API: Added support for proxy commands + imapc: Reconnect when getting disconnected in non-selected state. + imapc: Added imapc_features=modseq to access MODSEQs/HIGHESTMODSEQ. It was unnecessary and it broke %variables in extra fields. - fts-tika: Don't crash if it returns 500 error - dict-redis: Fixed timeout handling - SEARCH INTHREAD was crashing - stats: Only a single fifo_listeners was supported, making it impossible to use both auth_stats=yes and mail stats plugin. - SSL errors were logged in separate "Stacked error" log lines instead of as part of the disconnection reason. - MIME body parser didn't handle properly when a child MIME part's --boundary had the same prefix as the parent.

Solr with shared mailboxes

We have multiple logins assigned to single mailboxes, so we can give one login to different devices. Does this cause a problem with mailbox guids in solr or is the ID stored within the indexes and not related to username.

Possible to use Doveadm for a time range deletion

Hello All, I was wondering if it s possible to remove emails between a time range. For example, End Users have emails dating back to Aug 2000. He would like all emails deleted between the time stamp of 07/2014 to 07/2015 yet keep any emails outside of this area. I've ran into some similar examples, but nothing definite.

Strange search behavior

Hello, I experienced a strange behavior in the way dovecot is performing searches, I only experienced this exact issue with the flag "seen". If I perform this command: UID SORT (SIZE) UTF-8 FLAGGED SEEN Dovecot return every seen messages even if the message is not "flagged'. This is only happening when there is no unseen messages in the mailbox, if there is at least one, this is working properly. Any though ? Thanks.

push-notification plugin and imap-metadata permissions

Ultra short version: Why cant I set the following mailbox metadata key? /private/vendor/vendor.dovecot/pvt/server/vendor/vendor.dovecot/http-notify Let me explain the context: I'm using the Dovecot version 2.23.1, but the same happens for the 2.2.22 The push-notification plugin is supposed to send out a notification whenever a mailbox get a new email message. In order to tell if a mailbox is enabled to send out the notification, the plugin looks out for the following mailbox metadata key: /private/vendor/vendor.dovecot/pvt/server/vendor/vendor.dovecot/http-notify If the key is set then everything is OK and the notification is sent, otherwise the action is skipped. If I try to setup the metadata key by hand (telnet as the user over the imap port): setmetadata INBOX (/private/vendor/vendor.dovecot/pvt/server/vendor/vendor.dovecot/http-notify "user=myuser(a)mydomain.com") I get the error message: "Internal mailbox attributes cannot be accessed" Digging in the Dovecot 2.2.22 sources i found that: This string is from lib-imap-storage/imap-metadata.c - line 36 - Dovecot 2.2.22 The message is triggered by the following condition - same file - line 125 - Dovecot 2.2.22 if (strncmp(*key_r, MAILBOX_ATTRIBUTE_PREFIX_DOVECOT_PVT, strlen(MAILBOX_ATTRIBUTE_PREFIX_DOVECOT_PVT)) == 0) { So the path pvt/server appears to be forbidden. But, in the file lib-storage/mailbox-attribute.h we can read the following comment: /* User can get/set all non-pvt/ attributes and also pvt/server/ (but not pvt/server/pvt/) attributes. */ And, after said comment there is the definition of the macro MAILBOX_ATTRIBUTE_KEY_IS_USER_ACCESSIBLE(key) which has the same basic function of the condition in imap-metadata.c , but in this case the same imap key is seen as accessible. Now my questions: Can we use a negated version of MAILBOX_ATTRIBUTE_KEY_IS_USER_ACCESSIBLE(key) in imap-metadata? Kernel panic in dovecot-ee-lmtp on Debian 8

Hi list I just realized that that I don not receive all mails in my mailbox (running dovecot-ee 2.2.23.1-1 on Debian 8). On my frontend servers (running postfix) the queue fills up with mails that cannot be delivered via lmtp to my backend servers. From time to time the frontends can deliver messages to my backends. I just tested it with a mail from work. doveadm backup 2.2.23 ignores -u, but reads USER environment?

Hi, during a migration (cyrus -> dovecot) we ran into trouble¹ using 'doveadm backup' with 2.2.9. So I built 2.2.22 and 2.2.23, but they expose quite different behaviour. 2.2.22 seems to work at least partially, but 2.2.23 complains about a non existing user (root?). The command I'm running is: doveadm -o pop3_uidl_format=%v.%u \ -o imapc_master_user=cyrus -o imapc_password=* -o imapc_host=* \ -o mail_fsync=never \ -o imapc_ssl_verify=no -o imapc_ssl=imaps -o imapc_port=993 \ backup -f -u heiko -R imapc: Using 2.2.9 or 2.2.22 it works, using 2.2.23 "-u …" is ignored and I've to pass the user via the USER environment. But according to the manpage of doveadm-sync -u user/mask Run the command only for the given user. It's also possible to use '*' and '?' wildcards (e.g. -u *(a)example.org) When neither the -A option, nor the -F file option, nor the -u user was specified, the command will be executed with the environment of the currently logged in user. Interestingly enough -u 'heiko*' works fine, even with USER=root. So the environment doesn't seem to override -u … always. Maybe an important side note: the user 'heiko' doesn't exist as a local system user, he is known via LDAP only. Moving to as new server

I will shortly have to replace the OS on my machine. For various reasons, I will not be able to use a program like “imapsync” to transfer my documents to a new server. All of the mail folders on my present PC are stored under “/var/mail/vmail”. If I copied all of the folders under “vmail” and moved them to the new PC, would Dovecot be able to access them normally? Dovecot would not be running while I moved the files. Thanks

expunging messages doesn't update maildirsize

This might be something that everybody thinks of as a well-known fact, but I've been searching around quite a bit without finding anything definitive. Maybe I just have the wrong idea of what's supposed to be going on. I'm using maildir+ quotas. For arriving mail, it works as I expect: new lines are appended to maildirsize to reflect the size of the new messages. But I also expected that mail that is deleted (and expunged, yes totally gone from the disk drive, verified from the command line) would lead to some kind of update to maildirsize or maybe even a complete recalculation. But that does not happen on my system (dovecot 2.2.9 on a Ubuntu variant). Now, I know that I can run "doveadm" from a cron job or whatever to have the maildirsize info recomputed. I also know that the maildirsize file will be recreated when it gets larger than 4k. That's all fine. But I don't see why I should have to have this out-of-band cron job, and I don't see why my users should have to wait if their maildirsize file doesn't tip over the magical 4k mark (which is a lot of individual messages being recorded). Is it by design that dovecot doesn't update maildirsize immediately when messages are expunged? If yes, why?

Redirect indicator issue in Maildir flag seems to be an issue [missing?]

Hi, I've got an issue with the latest Thunderbird, although I'm not sure this is when the problem started (version 45.0) it has an add-on "mailredirect (version 0.8.7)". In the past I've been able to redirect mail (bounce them) and I get a nice little green arrow like indicator (in TB) to show that I redirected the particular email. Now, that green arrow appears briefly, then it goes away and I can no longer tell by looking at my email list if the email has, in fact, been bounced or not. I suspect it is dovecot on the Debian server: dovecot-common 1:2.1.7-7+deb7u1 dovecot-core 1:2.1.7-7+deb7u1 dovecot-imapd 1:2.1.7-7+deb7u1 dovecot-pop3d 1:2.1.7-7+deb7u1 It isn't just Thunderbird though, as I just tried to redirect using a Squirrelmail plugin, and it gives me the same problem; so I don't think it is at the MUA end of the deal. It /may/ be that TB is setting the flag and resetting it or dovecot is resetting it.... Any ideas? Nobody else has seen this yet? Thanks AndrewM

Maildir P flag?

Hi, I use Thunderbird with a mailredirect addon. It used to show me which emails were redirected. I believe it used the "P" Maildiir flag for this status. Now it seems that none of my email store has any file with a flag of P. Is this something that dovecot may have adjusted with my mail store? And if so, why? Thunderbird version 45 no longer can login via SSL

All, Just ran into issue with the latest Thunderbird release today, version 45.0. This version will no longer login to our dovecot 1.2.17 version. I now this is old version but wanting to know if there is anyone finding a solution to this? Right now our work around is to reinstall Thunderbird version 38.7.2 Thanks... -- C. J. Hi all, The example config says: # Header where the original recipient address (SMTP's RCPT TO: address) is taken # from if not available elsewhere. With dovecot-lda -a parameter overrides this. # A commonly used header for this is X-Original-To. #lda_original_recipient_header = I'm using dovecot 2.2.19 The "if not available elsewhere" bit seems to hold true for LDA, but not for LMTP. That is to say, if the value I want used is passed with LDA using the -a option, and another one I want ignored is passed in the header specified in this option, it works correctly and I have the address detail in sieve. However when using LMTP and the desired value is passed as RCPT TO, and this option is defined, and such a header exists -- its value seems to take effect, and is matched by sieve as the envelope address.

Hi there, I have a customer with domain a@tld and domain b@tld. b.tld is an alias for a.tld The Server is using virtual users based on mysql, dovecot for delivery and Maildir for Mail-Storage. If someone writes an e-mail to a.tld with a cc: to b.tld the customer receives the E-Mail twice.
