Trouble viewing Inbox via IMAP Client

Hello, I have been having trouble with this issue for quite some time now. Here is my environment: CentOS 6.5, Postfix built with PGSQL support, PFA, and dovecot. The problem I am having is that I can send and receive mail fine, but when I try to view my Inbox in an IMAP client like Thunderbird, I can only view sent mail and trash. dsync-server couldn't create .dovecot-sync.lock file

My dovecot stores users' emails on /var/spool/imap/<user> and stores the messages index on /var/lib/imap/<user>. I have many users who do not yet have their userdb_home directories created on the server, because that is created at the time of first login. I'm testing dsync for replication and have seen the following error: dsync-server(<user>): Error: Couldn't create lock /var/lib/imap/<user>/.dovecot-sync.lock: No such file or directory The /var/lib/imap/<user> directory does not exist yet and I think this is the cause. Master user and non-plaintext auth does not work

mail_location hashing & lowercasing?

Need help to compile and install a minimal dovecot imap plugin

I am trying to create a plugin that adds a new IMAP capability. Hi, Is it noted somewhere that Dovecot (v 2.0.9) doesn’t use case in directory names in its config-files? I found that out the hard way (i.e. a week of debugging)!! in /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-master.conf, the line: unix_listener /var/spool/postOut/auth/dovecot-auth { creates a: Jul 29 22:15:58 server dovecot: master: Error: service(auth): unlink(/var/run/dovecot/) failed: Is a directory but unix_listener /var/spool/postout/auth/dovecot-auth { works just fine (with matching case changes on the directory names themselves). Hello, I tried to implement Dsync (doveadm version 2.2.10) following https://www.evilcoder.org/2014/08/22/automatic-replication-with-dovecot/ but had no luck. SSH commands working quite well, but I need to respond more quickly. So TCP looks promising. I have Centos 6, Dovecot 2.2.10. I did everything that is written there, but after I restart dovecot doesn't sync. Then i ran netstat command but no service listen to port 12345 also. Iptables service are of in testing scenario...

I want to use a dovecot lda/lmtp because the quota settings for trash-folders are very nice and reducing my support times but im stuck at getting one of the dovecot-LDAs to work. Multiple A Records for IMAP service

Hello All, I have a quick question. I have 2 MX servers each with a Dovecot Instances (2.2.6). These 2 Dovecot Instances are replicated by using Dsync... All works well. The questions is, Can I have 2 A records for my imap.mydomain.tld? The Idea being, if for any reason, one of the Dovecot IMAP instances are unreachable, the client can connect to the other Instance. (this is purely a fail over scenario). If it matters, The clients are Thunderbird, Android Native (default) Mail client, iOS Mail Client. -Thanks in advance Vijay

Dear Dovecot experts, I'm in the process of setting up dovecot with mbsync as a local cache for remote IMAP servers. One recipe that I found involves using the /usr/lib/dovecot/imap (This is with Debian's dovecot package). For example, in .mbsyncrc I have IMAPAccount cwg-wf-local RequireSSL no Tunnel "/usr/lib/dovecot/imap -o mail_location=maildir:/home/cwg/.mail/cwg-wf" This works, but I wonder: is there any documentation for the /usr/lib/dovecot/imap executable? What options does it take? If there's no documentation: where can I find this command in dovecot's sources? Thank you, Christoph

Postfix + dovecot setup

I'm trying to clarify the various ways in which I could set up Postfix + Dovecot + SpamAssassin under CentOS-7, and I'd welcome any comments on the following remarks. As far as I can see there are 3 standard ways of setting this up: 1. Use amavisd 2. Use dovecot + pigeonhole/sieve 3. Use spamass-milter At present I'm following (2), but am thinking of going over to (1), since this seems simpler. (Amavisd wasn't available when I set up CentOS-7, so I didn't consider it then.) It seems to me that (2) is using dovecot in a slightly odd way, since as far as I can see dovecot normally takes email from ~/Maildir/cur/ and then moves marked spam. POP/IMAP HA solution for 5k users

Hello, I want to build simple, cheap HA solution for 5000 users with postfix/dovecot. Each user will have 1.3 GB mailbox (maildir) storage quota. All of the users will use POP and also plus half of them will use IMAP from smart phones. Sometimes they will hit webmail (squirrelmail). I plan that every user will send 20 and receive 20 mails per day. I have 3 locations, but electricity are not very stable there. We have outages for couple of hours 3-4 times per year. So I plan distribute all servers (it's more like good PC's) across locations. I'm very tied on budget also. Or maybe I could say I don't have it and I'm forced to use hardware equipment which is given. We are talking about quite pour HA solution here. Don't judge me please. I start to plan architecture and I would be very thankful for all your thoughts. I'm not expert in this area, but I need to learn, fire up email system and manage it. I will have SMTP server (smtp.example.com) which will filter mail with Clam, Spamassasin, Greylisting and forward emails to IMAP/ POP3/webmail server (mail.example.com) Mail.example.com will sync all user and mail changes to the third server mail2.example.com. Mail2.example.com server is just stand by, hot backup server in cases if main mail server or smtp will not be reachable. Locations of servers are in different cities: Locations #1 - SMTP servers as virtual machines (vmware server or virtualbox), with CPU i3, 6GB RAM, SSD, Centos 6, Virtualmin Location #2 - Dovecot/webmail server: CPU i5, 16GB RAM, HDD 1SSD for OS/dovecot indexes and SATA 2TBx4 LVM (total 8TB) for Maildir's, Centos 6, Virtualmin Location #3 HOT BACKUP (always online) server in case of mail.example.com or smtp.example.com failure, electricity outage and etc. It contains Dovecot/webmail server: CPU i3, 8GB RAM, HDD 1SSD for OS/dovecot indexes and SATA 2x4TB LVM (total 8TB), Centos 6, Virtualmin DNS configuration (and location number): IN MX 10 smpt.example.com. (#1) IN MX 20 mail.example.com. (#2) IN MX 30 mail2.example.com. (#3) .... smtp IN A aa.aa.aa.aa mail IN A bb.bb.bb.bb mail2 IN A cc.cc.cc.cc So I need to solve SMTP, POP, IMAP high availability tasks. SMTP I think will be ok for external users. SMTP feature has all three servers. If smtp.example.com server is offline mail is sent to mail.example.com If mail.example.com is offline, then mail is sent to mail2.example.com If mail2.example.com is offline, the senders SMTP server will hold an email in a queue by default for 3 days (in most cases) and will try to deliver in some intervals. Local (users of domain example.com) SMTP/POP/IMAP users will have problems, because their domain server will be dead. This means that connections from user MTA agents (outlook POP) could not be delivered because DNS A type record pointing to a degraded server. When problem with server mail.example.com (POP/IMAP/webmail) connectivity will happen, I think to login to DNS server and point record (A type) to a working server. So if server in location #2 mail.example.com is dead, I will change mail IN A bb.bb.bb.bb ----> cc.cc.cc.cc The same with the server smtp.example.com. If it's down, I will change mail IN A aa.aa.aa.aa ----> cc.cc.cc.cc I know that this method is not perfect because of ISP DNS caching around the globe, but this the only option I have. Most of my users use ISP that refresh DNS in a period of 30 minutes so it won't be very terrible to half of hour to wait for the connection. My questions: 1. Is this infrastructure is ok for 5000 users? If you think it's not, please write how many users it will serve "normally"? Or maybe I it could handle and 10 000 users load? 2. Is the logic of all setup is right in such situation like mine? What other problems could arise? 3. I prefer to create users from one server. So the LDAP option is the best for me? In case of LDAP it will be on server #2 and I need to replicate it to #3. Is it rigth? Then server #2 will be offline does #3 LDAP will take place? The main problem is to synchronize maildir of POP/IMAP/webmail servers. Because of distance I do not want to use DRBD. It's not suitable for WAN connections. GlusterFS seems an option but.. I saw on internet users also having problems with it performance. Sometimes gluster hang and all cluster must be restarted. Maybe I can sync /home with gluster where maildir resides, but we need to take care of dovecot index and control files synchronization also. The performance of retrieving index'es by several thousands users every 2-5 minutes must be excellent. The only option I found is Dovecot Dsync (or newer Doveadm) command. I made initial tests on two servers, but only to get work with SSH command. The method using TCP connection doesn't work for me. So question, if I use SSH method in several thousand user system does it cause me trouble? SSH adds some overhead comparing to TCP. But could make a permament tunnel and TCP also would be quite secure. So please tell me what methods are you using to sync two mail servers (especially for POP accounts) in different locations? 5. File system. Is it ok to use EXT4 file system? I know that XFS is better in performance working with small files (maildir = a lot of small files), but in power outage it can become corrupted without journal. Thanks.

Moving from one Dovecot server to another Dovecot server

Hi, I'm planning to move all mailboxes from a Dovecot 2.2.10 server to a Dovecot 2.2.9 server. Dovecot is serving virtual users only. I'm not sure if I can use dsync for that. According to the Wiki [1] the command to mirror my own mailbox should look like dsync -u mine(a)michi.su mirror ssh -i my_ssh_key vmail(a)my-mailserver.com dsync -u mine(a)michi.su Where vmail is the user that is used by Dovecot to access mail_location. I assume the above command will only mirror the mailbox of user mine(a)michi.su, right? Is it possible to sync all mailboxes with just one single command? LMTP and passdb deny=yes not working

Hi all, I start this on in a new thread. I setup the deny-user setting to temporarily prevent users from logging in and (that would be great) also stop mail delivery for said user. All this is because of our upcoming migration. Now it seems that lmtp is ignoring this setting. While migrating a mailbox with dsync is it safe to deliver mail via LMTP to the new (target) mailbox or is it wiser to deactivate LMTP delivery to this mailbox until it's fully migrated? Lots of people must have had this issue before me - users using different devices&software (pc, smartphone, tablet, thunderbird, outlook, webmail) and languages (e.g. English on the PC, German on the iPhone), some folders end of with different names - e.g. "Sent" and "Gesendete Elemente" - meaning the same thing, namely "sent mails". How do you map these to just one folder such that it shows up correctly independently of what the user happens to be using? It sounds like something for the mailbox "Sent" { special_use = \Drafts } config directive? Timo, We are contemplating building an S3 compatible cluster of storage servers using Pithos <https://github.com/exoscale/pithos> and Cassandra to get multi data center redundancy and availability. Would it be possible to have multiple Dovecot servers in disparate geographical locations all talking to the same object storage, assuming it's consistent between sites? From what I remember about obox the dovecot servers all keep a copy of the index locally and merge it with a file in the object storage at intervals, is this an issue with our concept? Also does your team have any performance analysis data on the obox plugin, or data on it's use in production?

OS X 10.6 Server - Dovecot Issue

I've just taken over support for an OS X Server (v10.6.8) box, and am a bit new at Postfix & Dovecot. We're having an problem where, intermittently, dovecot seems to be bouncing messages inbound for some of my existing users. See $SUBJ - or is there a setting somewhere to control this? I have a userid = user(a)example.com with homedir (from /etc/shadow) = /home/example.com/user, but when dovecot wants to find e.g. ~/.dovecot.sieve , it looks in /home/user(a)example.com .... Hi, i would like to know if anybody have implemented the authentication of dovecot against samba4 via secure ldap (SSL/TLS). Hi all, I have a Dovecot setup (2.1, I will switch to 2.2 soon) with one Director and 2 backend servers. When my MX server (Postfix) tries to deliver mail to Dovecot via LMTP, it often gets an error "451 4.4.0 Remote server not answering (timeout while waiting for reply to DATA reply)" from the Director. Service LMTP is configured with "client_limit = 1" on Director en backends (others limits are default ones). Postfix is using "lmtp_destination_recipient_limit = 1" and "lmtp_destination_concurrency_limit = 1". I want that incoming messages are stored one after one per recipient (have a queue per recipient). I does not seem to be done actually. I think Postfix is sending too many messages at a time to Director. How do you do to handle that ? I already applied the 3 patches available on the list for 2.1, but it does not seem to solve my problem... Thank you a lot. Florent

Hello, I've upgraded to the new LTS version of Ubuntu. With that comes a new dovecot version. I think I've migrated my dovecot configuration correctly to the new version. Everything works, except that the mailboxes don't show up in the list of mailboxes in my mail clients. Thunderbird not able to edit sieve Message Filters

I'm not sure when this problem first occurred - it is many months since I last editted a sieve filter. I am certainly several versions of Thunderbird and, probably, a few versions of Dovecot on from when I last editted a sieve filter. However, I do know that I have done so in the past. I have just built Dovecot 2.2.13 and Pigeonhole 0.4.3, installed and running on Slackware 14.1 x64. I am running an up-to-date version of Thunderbird (31.0) on Arch Linux x64. The sieve filters are definitely being applied to incoming mail, and working perfectly well. However, when I attempt to edit the Sieve Filters (from Thunderbird Tools->Sieve Message Filters...), the Sieve Filters tab is displayed, but not populated (eg, the Server Sieve Capabilities are not displayed, and there is an endless 'hourglass' displayed in the main mailfilters pane. Hi, the affected machine is running 2.2.13 on Gentoo x86_64. For me it looks like the old size is still in some struct or whereever even after the file has been renamed. I see that there are many commits following 2.2.13, is that possibly already fixed or do I need to dig in the code? About network throughput between Director and backends

I plan to migrate my Dovecot IMAP servers to a clustered structure. I'm planning a cluster with high availability and load balancing. I know I need instances of Dovecot Proxy / Director. But these instances can be on another network? There is need for high network throughput between the Director and the backends? For me it would be cheaper to run Director in VM's at Amazon AWS for example. Thanks! -- Thiago Henrique

doveadm proxy list

Hi, i have configured my dovecot-proxy with "shutdown_clients = no" and "service_count = 1" for a "default_process_limit = 5000" and "default_client_limit = 25000". I don't know if this is a prefered setup for so many users/concurrent sessions but so i can reload my dovecot without disconnecting all sessions. The main problem are pop3 sessions - if i kill them, the mailbox remains locked and the client gets an error. Back to my problem: If i reload dovecot the "doveadm proxy list" shows me the list of the new processes. Is there any possibility to see the stats of the old sessions (user,source,destination) ? greet's Claus PS.: Could someone explain me why i have to set default_client_limit to 5x default_process_limit?

Hi. doveadm -D fetch -u login \ 'imap.envelope imap.bodystructure size.virtual date.received' '*' according to mail archives allows to regenerate indexes and precache specified headers for imap usage. What headers are needed for dovecot pop3 daemon? I have one server where dovecot works for imap only. For pop3 there is different software being used. I want to migrate to dovecot pop3 but I need to precache and regenerate indexes for dovecot pop3. Note, some users used pop3 only, so dovecot imap had no chance to generate any indexes. Hello List, with dovecot version 2.2.13.9, I actually have a problem using lazy_expunge and acl together. Shared/Public Folders work fine with lazy_expunge disabled. If lazy_expunge is enabled and userA got a shared folder form userB, then there is the error shown in subject. My test case to reproduce the error. doveadm mailbox list -u userA@domain --> Output Fine. doveadm acl set -u userB@domain INBOX user=userA@domain lookup read write write-seen write-deleted insert expunge create --> Fine. doveadm mailbox list -u userA@domain --> Some output and then: --> doveadm(userA@domain): Fatal: lazy_expunge: Unknown namespace: '.EXPUNGED/' I think this is a bug in dovecot, can someone of the dovecot developers or someone else confirm this? If it is not please show me the fault in my configuration. New user mailbox permission

Hi all, I have a problem with my Dovecot installation. First, some informations: - OS: CentOS 6.5 x86_64 - Dovecot: dovecot-2.0.9-7.el6.x86_64 Config: mail_location = sdbox:~/dbox user_query = SELECT username, password, 'vmail' as uid, 'vmail' as gid, '/var/vmail/%d/%n' as home, CONCAT('*:storage=', (quota DIV 1000)) as quota_rule FROM mailbox WHERE username='%u' What I want to do is to create a backup user to rsync the mailstore to a remote location. If possible, I don't want to use the root user for this operation. I already added the backup user to "vmail" group. The problem is that when a new user is created, it's base directory permission are 0700 (vmail:vmail). From what I read here (http://wiki2.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Permissions, "Permissions to new /domain/user directories"), simply using the setgid bit is not sufficient because I am not using an absolute path for mail_location. My questions are: 1) all I need to do is to switch to an absolute mail_location? 2) it is possibile to solve my problem _without_ altering mail_location? How to configure read-only access during a migration?

I would appreciate your advice about these TWO PROBLEMS: ======================================================= Find the simplest way to A) configure a Dovecot 2.2.10 IMAP server to access (existing) email users' (mbox-format) mail folders ****in read-only mode.**** B) Do the above while allowing a master_user to access mail on behalf of real users. (I've got master_user access working in read-write mode.) Simplest because while I'm proficient at UNIX systems administration, I'm under time pressure and dovecot has a lot of configuration flexibility. Identifying the right way to do this is proving time- consuming. Namespaces? ACL's? passdb's? I thought it was time to bring in the dovecot wizards. You! GOAL: ======================================================= Without knowing or changing users' passwords, migrate several hundred users of dovecot IMAP to MS Exchange using the commercial product Transend. I'm manging the dovecot side, someone else is doing the Transend/Exchange piece. Migration would occur in batches due to slowness of the Transend side when dealing with users with email collections over a few gigabytes. I have a production IMAP server (dovecot 1.0.13 on 32-bit RHEL 4.9). Let's call it PROD for short. Users INBOXes are stored locally on PROD. Their other mail folders are stored on a second machine and accessed via NFS. Those other folders contain the great majority of the email to be migrated. Let's call the NFS server MIGR for short. On MIGR, I've set up a migration IMAP server (dovecot 2.2.10 on 64-bit RHEL 5.10). MIGR is a dedicated NFS server with newer hardware than PROD. It has an unused Ethernet NIC I can tell Transend to use. Both PROD and MIGR use NIS for authentication. Therefore PAM is consulted for passdb information, normally. No SQL db's used. I set up the second server (MIGR) for several reasons: 1) there are some users mail folders larger than the 32-bit file size limit found on the PROD server. 2) the bulk of the email is stored locally on the MIGR server. 3) the version of dovecot is much newer and therefore more likely to have fewer bugs and more configuration options. 4) I don't want to modify the production environment except where really necessary. Pointing Transend at MIGR instead of PROD seems like it will be faster and better. Telling end-users to use MIGR instead of PROD would allow them to verify that their email came across okay (into MS Exchange) without being able to modify the original copy of email (in Dovecot). In the days and weeks after migration. I may need to re-enable write access on PROD for certain users if the migration does not succeed. Transend has been dying on a number of test users despite tweaking its parameters in consultation with the vendor. "Corrupt" messages seem to be the issue. Users (or sysadmins) might be required to identify and delete the offending messages before we retry their migration. (Which folders and which messages are causing problems will hopefully be discernible in Transend logs.) Ha! If you've read this far, then I'd also say that I welcome any advice on changes to increase performance on MIGR, such as whether trying to minimize indexing as I've done is useful. LMTP re-reading all messages

Hi all, I have a little problem with Dovecot 2.1.17 and MailDir accounts. I was using a shared file system (MooseFS), and all was pretty stable. Now I'm switching to CephFS, and Dovecot LMTP have problem to deliver mails. Very often, on large accounts, LMTP processes are running for a few hours before delivering the message. When I strace it, I can see that they are reading (open and stat operations) ALL the messages of the account. I was thinking to an index problem, but I think that after hundreds of delivered mails, indexes are rebuilded and problem should be solved. But not. The same way, If user connects to IMAP, a lot of IMAP processes get stuck on "getquotaroot" command (multiple processes for a single account). The previous FS didn't support mmap, so I disabled it. The new one supports it, so I enabled it, but it does not solve the problem. Do you have an idea of why Dovecot (LMTP or IMAP) spend a lot of time on large accounts ? Thank you a lot. Florent

antispam plugin crash

Hi, the dovecot antispam plugin crahses here on a nullpointer dereference in antispam_copy() at mailbox.c The crash tracks back to a call of antispam_classify_copy(asms->box_class, asmb->box_class) At that point in time asmb is set to 0x0, causing the process to crash with SIGSEGV. Dovecot v2.2 FTS is not indexing "text/html" emails...

Hi, I am not sure its intended or a fault in the newest Dovecot versions. I have been using Dovecot v1.2.15 on Debian squeeze and FTS is working as expected. When I search a quoted string "very good", I get 107 results including plain and HTML emails which have this phrase. In order to compare the benefits of lucene over squat, I recently started testing dovecot v2.2.13 on Debian Sid with the same maildir content. But now the same search "very good" yielded just 8 results. I thought it could be some problem with lucene so I tried switching to squat and got 107 results again. After this I deleted the old squat search index files created by v1.2.15 and re-indexed the mail-box by using doveadm index command. Now the same squat search is giving 8 results just as lucene. So I have realized that its not a problem with just lucene but FTS in newer dovecot isn't indexing those emails which have Content-type as text/html. Thus if a mail is like this: Content-Type: text/html <b>He is very good.</b> It isn't shown in search by the squat indexes created using dovecot v2.2.13. I have done further testing on some sample emails which confirmed this behavior. Why is this so? -Regards, Akash

auth_username_translation and LTMP problem

auth_username_translation seems to be appliet on RCPT TO address of LTMP transport. Why dovecot is doing that? And better question - is there a way to disable auth_username_translation for LTMP but leave enabled for the rest (imap, pop3 etc) ? Background: I'm doing auth_username_translation = @= to allow logins like aaa(a)bbb.pl to be internally translated to aaa=bbb.pl. That works fine. Now my exim delivers mail to dovecot using LTMP and it does translation or it own, so it does: RCPT TO: <aaa=bbb.pl(a)mymbox.pl> Unfortunately looks like dovecot it doing translation one more time and looking in user database for aaa=bbb.pl=mymbox.pl where such user doesn't exist. I have a script (available on demand) that moves all my mail for a given month to a separate NAMESPACE (#ARCHIVE). When I do that, the lucene-indexes folder in the PRIMARY namespace seems to get cleaned out, and NOTHING gets put in the lucene-indexes folder (although it gets created) in the #ARCHIVE namespace. Is this to spec? the archiving is done via doveadm move commands. Segfault with indexer-worker using Tika/Solr

Using Dovecot 2.2.13 with Tika 1.5 on Centos 5 64bit Tika is throwing an exception for some reason, which seems to be causing Dovecot's indexer to segfault. I'm using mdbox/gzipped compressed mail and private indexes for the shared folder. BUG: Solr FTS engine appends domain name to index records

The Solr FTS engine appends domain names to the "user" and "id" fields inside Solr when indexing. However, when an IMAP search is performed, the domain name is not appended, resulting in 0 results, 100% of the time. You can reproduce this by setting up dovecot to have user names like "admin", "james", etc (as opposed to admin(a)example.com) Then import some mail (ie: "dovecot-lda -d admin < /tmp/mymail.txt"). Now attempt to search for that mail and it will not be returned as a result. You can see in the Solr GUI (http://xxxx:8983/solr/) that record is indexed as: { "uid": 1, "box": "7dff0b0d4f84df53f25300003d823887", "user": "admin(a)example.com", "id": "1/7dff0b0d4f84df53f25300003d823887/admin(a)example.com", "_version_": 1475511406809841700 } However, the IMAP search is sent to Solr performed with user:"admin" instead of user:"admin(a)example.com". Either the Solr FTS plugin needs to not append the domain name or the search does need to do so.

Right now all users can move mail and remove mail from the shared folders. I want people (except a few specific users) to be read only on this public folders. 3. Need to know if i'm creating the folders correctly. Right now i'm under my shared folder directory creating shared_folder and 3 subfolders beneath it (cur, new and tmp). After this it shows up in eg. roundcube and i can subscribe to it. I have read all the documentation and tried all the solutions i can. Mostly moving the index and/or config files to seperate dirs and from my understanding that should give each user their own index file marking what mails have been read ect. But this doesn't happen. Huge difference between the lucene index size created by v2.1 and v2.2

Hi everyone, While examining dovecot versions v2.1 and v2.2 for their lucene search performances, I have noticed a huge difference in the index sizes created by them. Both versions were compiled on same system, against same libclucene, same configure options and were used with same dovecot.conf during run-time. I deleted the lucene-indexes folder and dovecot* files in the Maildir prior to indexing with both versions. Problems with dovecot 2.2.13 and monit

Hello, When I upgraded my servers to dovecot 2.2.13 the monitoring tool monit started to send out warnings that it couldn't reach my imap/pop3 servers through ssl any more. The same problem didn't happen on non-ssl-connections. Hi, I have a postfix+dovecot-2.2.13 system and have configured it to support IMAPS on 993 with SSL/TLS. I'm noticing with users using Thunderbird, the autodetect defaults to IMAPS on 143 with STARTTLS. Which is preferred? Which is more secure? Which is more common? Why would someone choose one over the other? Can I ask the same question about SMTP and submission? Why would one choose 587 with STARTTLS versus 465 with SSL/TLS? Thanks, Alex

Dovecot failing with exit code 19200 in cron job

Hi All, I am synchronizing a few hundred dovecot mailboxes with a perl script via a crontab. It works for a while (ie exit status=0) but the rest then start failing with exit code 19200. I tried redirecting STDERR but showed nothing. I suspect the cron job is hitting some sort of resource limit? If I run the perl script from the command line it appears to dsync all the accounts OK. The relevant part of my Perl code is below. Any ideas? NFS INTR mount option

Hi again, We have our mailboxes on several NFS filesystems mounted with the options below. 10.11.0.238:/mailbox_store_01 on /home1 type nfs4 (rw,noatime,vers=4.0,rsize=65536,wsize=65536,namlen=255,hard,nordirplus,proto=tcp,port=0,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,clientaddr=10.11.0.95,local_lock=none,addr=10.110.238) On the rare occasions that the NFS mounts hang, the system load goes through the roof and I often have to reboot the mailstore server as dovecot process are hung and can't be killed. INBOX subfolders not showing up

Hi, I have a problem with INBOX subfolders and subscriptions which I can't solve... Maybe somebody has seen this, too... I can create regular subfolders (not in INBOX) and (un-)subscribe to them with Thunderbird. If I create subfolders in the INBOX with TB this seems to work now in v31 (just found this out), but with v24.6 neither INBOX subfolder creation nor subscriptions worked. When I modified the `subscriptions' file manually on the server, the folders would show up in TB, though. Maybe this was a TB bug, but quite similarly INBOX subfolders don't show up on iPhones (iOS up-to-date), but all other subfolders do. Any ideas what's going on? Hello, I am having an issue with Dovecot. I am using Roundcube to access my mailboxes, which I have set up using ViMbAdmin. However when I go to the Roundcube, I get login Failed. namspace management

Hello, since some weeks I'm playing with namespaces. But I still did nod found a solution for all faces of different problems. Current issue: Public namespace. I have users inbox as follow: mail_home = /data/mail/%Ln/ mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=~/.dovecot.index namespace { inbox = yes separator = / prefix = INBOX/ } Public namespace: namespace { location = maildir:/data/mail_public/Maildir/:INDEXPVT=~/.dovecot.index.public/ prefix = PUBLIC/ separator = / type = public } that way only one subscription file is possible. Any use could subscribe/unsubscribe any folder and that match all users. If I add "subscription=no" the parent namespace' subscription is used. In fact there is no parent namespace an no subscription management is possible at all. On the other side I tried to change the PUBLIC namespace prefix to "INBOX/PUBLIC" but now the namespace is *below* the inbox. That's also not what I want. How do other users organise the namespaces INBOX, PUBLIC, SHARED and VIRTUAL (via virtual plugin) ? Thanks Andreas

Multiple Passdb's - Order

Hi, Today I upgraded my dovecot to a newer version (2.2.9 debian wheezy-backports) At that moment I also reconfigured the whole thing a bit nicer. Now I stumbled on the following issue. Cannot use dovecot with vpopmail and sendmail

Hi, I setup a configuration that will use sendmail with dovecot as imap/pop3 service and vpopmail as backend to handle virtual users and store email there. Trying Dovecot Replication with dsync

Hi, I have a failover cluster for mail server with: Ubuntu12.04 + DRBD (for block replication) + Ext4 filesystem + Dovecot-2.0.19-2 with Mdbox It works fine with ~50k accounts. My cluster design: http://adminlinux.com.br/cluster_design.txt I plan to test Dovecot Replication with dsync to build an active/active cluster with load balancing. Can anyone direct me to some literature? A tutorial for example. I'm installing a cluster (for tests) with Ubuntu 14.04 + Ext4 filesystem (without Drbd) + Dovecot-2.2.9-1ubuntu2.1. Hi all, First post here so hopefully I get all the required information correct. I am running a mail server on Debian, its consists of Postfix (2.9.6-2), Dovecot (2.1.7) and MySQL (5.5). Basic stuff is all working find so I decided to try and implement quotas. This is working to an extent but not properly and I am a little lost so looking for some help. In my configuration the default mailbox quota is set to "*:storage=100M". When I create a mailbox with 250M specified in the database, dovecot is applying the default quota rather than that specified in the database. So in the database I have a test user with the following entry password,email,quota_kb [hash], test(a)example.org, 25000 If I turn debugging on for mail and auth I see the following logged when the user logs in (logs pasted at the end in a bid to maintain some readability) If I check the quota with doveadm I get the limit back of 102400 which is the default mailbox size rather than that from the database. doveadm quota get -u test(a)example.org Quota, name, Type, Value, Limit, % User quota, STORAGE, 19139, 102400, 18 User quota, MESSAGE, 567, - I can't quite figure out where I am going wrong in terms of getting the database value to supersede the default value set in 90-quota.conf. I did read one thing in the quota documentation on the dovecot website (http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Quota/Configuration) that I didn't get and this might be where I am going wrong but can't check. It says "Check that dovecot-lda is called with -d parameter." Where would this be configured and where could I check? Hi, I'm trying to set up Postfix + Dovecot (2.0.9) + PostfixAdmin on CentoOS (the standard amazon machine image) and am having problems with my SMTP user authentication. Turning on auth debugging I can see the username is losing the first part of the domain so one(a)two.three becomes one.three dovecot: auth: Debug: sql(one.three, ... ): query: SELECT username AS user,password FROM mailbox WHERE username = 'one.three' AND active='1' I don't know if it's postfix or dovecot which is trimming the username, any tips on what causes this would be greatly appreciated. Sieve: Saving "pristine" messages for backups and spam training

Hello, I'm trying to work out a way to have my Sieve filter save a "pristine" version of email messages as a backup, primarily to use for training the spam filter. I would like is to have every message saved into a single, site-wide directory (in the global sieve) before being processed additionally and delivered. The messages in that directory will be used to train the spam filter without having to worry about removing Spamassassin headers and so forth. I thought fileinto :copy might do what I wanted, but this creates a backup directory individually for each user. That's unmanageable for the spam training process I use. redirect *could* work, but that adds a header during the process so the email saved would not be "pristine". I'm thinking of using the extprograms plugin to pipe to a program that will do a simple copy. That feels very hackish, however, and I'm hoping there is a more elegant solution. Am I missing something obvious here? Thanks! Jeff

Hey dovecot-users, did I miss anything anywhere about the configuration variables "nfs_storage" and "mail_nfs_index" being removed from the example configuration in 2.2? In 2.1 they where both in 10-mail.conf commented out and set to their default "no". But with 2.2 they are not in any of the exmaple config files anymore. doveadm is still showing the variables and they can be used as ever still. Just wondering if I missed something and this should be configured differently on 2.2 now. Regards Christian

poolmon improvements

I've been planning to improve poolmon failure checking for a long time already, but I still haven't managed to get to it. Maybe somebody else has more time, so here's a feature request for anyone to implement: poolmon currently gives up immediately if the first check to any service fails. It really should be trying multiple times over multiple seconds before giving up. I think ideally it would be: - Individual check timeout could still be the default 5 seconds - Add full check time setting, which could be e.g. 15 seconds. If all checks fail during this time then disable the host. - If request fails because connection gets rejected, retry quickly, e.g. after 0,1 seconds - If check fails because of protocol errors, wait for a long time, e.g. 1 second So this would avoid backend being removed in situations where it really shouldn't be removed: - Dovecot restarts - Dovecot reloads - load spikes and other random issues that cause temporary problems Especially the load spike is an annoying issue which my plan doesn't even fully solve. The solution to fix a heavily overloaded cluster isn't really to start removing all of its backends that are busy working..

Dovecot v2.2 FTS is not indexing "text/html" emails...

Hi, I am not sure its intended or a fault in the newest Dovecot versions. I have been using Dovecot v1.2.15 on Debian squeeze and FTS is working as expected. When I search a quoted string "very good", I get 107 results including plain and HTML emails which have this phrase. In order to compare the benefits of lucene over squat, I recently started testing dovecot v2.2.13 on Debian Sid with the same maildir content. But now the same search "very good" yielded just 8 results. I thought it could be some problem with lucene so I tried switching to squat and got 107 results again. After this I deleted the old squat search index files created by v1.2.15 and re-indexed the mail-box by using doveadm index command. Now the same squat search is giving 8 results just as lucene. So I have realized that its not a problem with just lucene but FTS in newer dovecot isn't indexing those emails which have Content-type as text/html. Thus if a mail is like this: Content-Type: text/html <b>He is very good.</b> It isn't shown in search by the squat indexes created using dovecot v2.2.13. I have done further testing on some sample emails which confirmed this behavior. Why is this so? -Regards, Akash

Hi, I have a fedora20 system with dovecot-2.2.13 running various services, including pop3. I'm noticing some users are frequently hamming pop3, and wondered if this was normal, or something I should be investigating? postfix-dovecot via lmtp

I've been trying for some days to get postfix + dovecot + pigeonhole/sieve working on a CentOS-7 home server. I think I may have detected the problem; I read in /var/log/maillog Aug 4 11:29:13 alfred postfix/lmtp[14871]: 9C04C220A99: to=<tim(a)localhost.gayleard.eu>, orig_to=<tim@localhost>, relay=alfred.gayleard.eu[private/dovecot-lmtp], delay=971, delays=971/0.03/0.02/0.1, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (host alfred.gayleard.eu[private/dovecot-lmtp] said: 451 4.3.0 <tim(a)localhost.gayleard.eu> Internal error occurred. (in reply to RCPT TO command)) (I've split one long line here.) 1) I see that the permissions on /var/spool/postfix/private/ are [tim@alfred ~]$ ls -ls /var/spool/postfix/ 4 drwx------. 2 postfix root 4096 Aug 4 11:30 private The socket dovecot-lmtp setup by postfix is in this directory; does dovecot need permission to access this? 2) I see that this mail (a test email from me) was deferred. What exactly does this mean? Where is the mail stored? I couldn't find it anywhere. (It has already been brought to the server by fetchmail.) 3) Am I right in thinking that there are 2 alternatives to dovecot/sieve a) amavisd-new with postfix + spamassassin b) postfix + procmail ? 4) I remember seeing a posting (probably not in this mailing list) describing how one can trace the progress of email through the server. Unfortunately I didn't note the URL, and now cannot find it. Does anyone have a pointer to such a document? As will probably be obvious, I am not at all clear how postfix and dovecot fit together if one introduces lmtp. Dovecot, Thunderbird and messages in wrong folder

Hello, Sometimes it happens that messages (e.g. one or two) appear in wrong folders in Thunderbird (latest version, also past versions, different computers, also Earlybird). When I repair the folder (folder/Settings/Repair Folder) in Thunderbird, the folder is correct then. It happens on my new server with Fedora 20, Dovecot 2.2.13 and Maildir but it also happened on my old server with Fedora 1, Dovecot 2.2.13 and mbox. Has anyone the same issue? Any guess whether it might be a thunderbird or dovecot issue? Anyone has the same issues with thunderbird and a different IMAP server (e.g. cyrus)? Thank you. Dovecot and remote SASL Client via TLS

Hello, Is it possible to configure Dovecot as SASL client for central authentication (also remotely via TCP/TLS)? Following use case: IMAP server (host 1) <=> Windows Domain Controller and /etc/shadow authenticator via pam (host2) Should work as: IMAP server (host 1) <=> SASL Client via TLS <=> Network <=> SASL Server via TLS <=> Local SASL via pam <=> Windows Domain Controller and /etc/shadow authenticator via pam (host2) Thank you.
