If a host is running NIS (passwd file ends in +::0:0:::) authentication, will dovecot be able to authenticate with auth_userdb = passwd directly and automagically or do you have to do a ypcat passwd > pwfile periodically to generate a passwd file that dovecot can use? ? I'm writing this on behalf of someone else... They successfully setup Dovecot, and can login to Dovecot using telnet but as soon as they are logged in, they get the message "Connection closed by foreign host" and are disconnected. The user is a valid Linux user and the mail file exists under /var/mail. They say no errors are written to /var/log/maillog. # telnet localhost 110 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1). Escape character is '^]'. +OK dovecot ready. USER mymailuser +OK PASS 123456 +OK Logged in. Connection closed by foreign host. # Can anyone give me ideas where we would begin troubleshooting this? Many thanks, Steve :)

[Dovecot] LDA Plugin Maybe?

I was just looking into setting up DSPAM, with the Dovecot LDA. Essentially, what I was probably going to do, was use DSPAM as the Delivery agent, after postfix, and then have it pass it off to dovecot, or something along those lines. I just had an idea, if we start using libdspam, in the dspam plugin, or one of the other suggested methods, we could have a similar plugin in the LDA, so that if it's marked as spam, deliver it straight into the Spam folder! Also, with Sieve, can we make it create a folder if the folder doesn't exist, and can it modify the subscriptions file? Thanks Tim -- Linux Counter user #273956

Hello everybody! I was searching around for an solution of my problem what surely is just a little thing, but nothing helped me out. Here the error in the mail.log: pop3(contact(a)maddy.cc): Failed to create storage with data: /var/vmail/maddy.cc/contact/ pop3-login: Login: contact(a)maddy.cc [84.4.228.150] dovecot: child 30083 (pop3) returned error 89 Who has to be the owner/group for /var/vmail/maddy.cc and /contact ? Because i have the user 'virtual' who manages the maildirs and the accounts (via PostgreSQL) and the user dovecot, but i tried already different scenarios with both and still no success. Do you still have some hints what i do wrong? Have you an idea what is happen here? But i don't know how i can switch my users to dovecot, wich have dotted logins in their mail clients configuration: user1.domain1.org user2.domain1.org user1.domain2.org ... Probably a very know problem but I fail to find a solution. selinux enforced makes the /etc/init.d/dovecot start command fail If I change it to permiscious mode then it works. Any idea how to solve this? I use FC5 with dovecot-1.0-0.beta2.7 Thanks, Alfred

Hi Borthers/Sisters Thanks for all the developer(s) and for all the hard work spent on build this great piece of software! I loved Dovecot since it is really easy to set up and really fast but I am really new to it (only 2 weeks and half). Right now, our server configuration is: Server: Apple Xserve G5 dual RAM: 4GB Number of Users: ~ 150 IMAP only users Authentication: LDAP Mailboxes sizes: ~200GB Dovecot version: 1.0 Beta 5 (I am looking forward to beta 7 that was released today) Email client software: mostly Thunderbird 1.5 Right now, we are experiencing occasional problem with imap users unable to connect to the server. With beta 3, we had to restart the dovecot/imap processes almost every 3 hours. with Dovecot beta5 we still have to restart the processes but it seems to occur every 3 days (Friday and Yesterday) and only in a peak time (around 3pm). I am waiting to occur it again and I will be able to grab more information about the number of processes, users, virtual memory, etc, etc. So, at this point, I don't have much information to debug the problem. Let's wait. I guess we have here a nice machine (xserve) and not a huge number of users (~150). So, I would expect that our server would handle the load. But having to restart Dovecot once a while, as I described, is not an option (users are getting frustrated). :( Maybe with Beta 7 with the feature "Added shutdown_clients setting to control if existing imap/pop3 processes should be killed when master is" can stop our nightmares :) By the way, our dovecot.conf is basically the default sent with the software. We haven't changed much there! Meanwhile, I'd like to know, if possible, whar are you using to run Dovecot like hardware, OS version, number of users and problems that you are experiencing. Hi, quota is now working well, except that both quota-fs and quota-maildir is showing incorrect values. I have to use this patch to get correct numbers. I _know_ it's totally wrong, and that the cause have to be something else, I just want to know if this is something with my setup, or what? I'm setting up a new server with dovecot 1.0b7. Fixes, mostly: * The login and master usernames were reversed when using master_user_separator (now the order is UW-IMAP compatible). * Killing dovecot master process now kills all IMAP and POP3 processes also. + -a parameter to dovecot prints now all settings that Dovecot uses. -n prints all settings that are different from defaults. + Added pop3_lock_session setting + %M modifier returns string's MD5 sum. Patch by Ben Winslow - PLAIN SASL authentication wasn't working properly, causing failed logins with some clients (broken in beta4) - Fixes to Maildir++ quota, should actually work now - Don't crash if passwd-file has entries without passwords (eg. deny=yes databases) - Fixed prefetch userdb to work nicely with other userdbs - If master process runs out of file descriptors, don't go to infinite loop (unlikely to have happened unless the OS's default fd limit was too low) - Fixed non-plaintext password lookups from LDAP. Dear List, is it possible to integrate a function for timelimits the pop3-connects? I require this function for an email-masshosting-project. My problem is, the most customers will lookup all 30 seconds or 1 minutes for new mails, that is stupid so I mean. My idea is a function where the customer must wait (for example) 3 minutes for a pop3-connect and lookup for new emails. Is it possible? Hi, I haven't tried compiling 1.0 series since -test52, figured I'd give it a shot. There were a couple of minor problems. This is building on a fairly ancient BSD/OS box, so the issues may not be universal, but I suspect these ones are. ==================== Building in src/lib-dict/dict.c : loading the 'dict' program fails because it can't find various RAND and other functions. Adding -lcrypto fixes. Because we have fairly draconian attachment size limits, the 52GB of mail we are serving contains a _lot_ of mail. Dovecot is working extremely well for us at this site, and several other smaller sites all using a combination of OSX Mail and Outlook. Sorry, the authentication problem still wasn't actually fixed in beta6. Now, this time I tested every possible authentication case that it really works. I'll soon create a CVS branch which is going to stabilize into the 1.0 release. I won't add new features there so it shouldn't really get broken anymore, at least because of new features.. So, two changes in this release: + Added shutdown_clients setting to control if existing imap/pop3 processes should be killed when master is. - Master login fixes, PLAIN authentication was still broken..

[Dovecot] problem with out-of-box fedora rpm

Hi Folks, Most of the available howtos suggest that an out of the box binary rpm should at least be able to start on a similarly out of the box Fedora Core 4 installation. However, whenever I run /sbin/service dovecot start I get a failed message. Dovecot was installed using the standard package that ships with FC4 (i386 0.99.14). The only slightly anomalous feature of my system is that wlan0 not eth0 is the primary network interface. This hasn't upset anything else though. I even tried disabling the firewall briefly to see if that had any effect, and it doesn't. So, two questions. Firstly, any ideas on why it might be failing to start? Secondly, where might I look (like, which logs/where) for clues? /var/log/messages doesn't contain any references to dovecot (I grepped it), so I'm out of ideas. My sendmail configuration is working perfectly, and I can send and receive emails fine. But I need pop3 access for some of my users. Just to recap, I haven't even got to the point of testing whether its listening, or configuring authentication. It will not start out of the box. Am I missing some essential configuration step? Hi all. I'm new to dovecot. I promise I've looked over the docs and lists for an answer to this, but I didn't find anything. If I missed something I apologize. I'm running dovecot 1.0.beta2 on debian testing. It's almost working, I'm getting permissions errors when the imap server actually goes to read the messages out of the cur Maildir directory. hello, i added the dovecot-dspam-plugin [1] to my dovecot-installation. when trying to move a mail out of or into the predefined spamfolder with thunderbird a messagebox shows : "dspam failed" and the message remains in its original position. i am using virtual mail users contained in a postgresql-database [2]. normal imap access and dspam training from the commandline works fine. a posting concerning probably the same issue has been posted on the dspam-mailinglist [3], but there haven't been any helpful replies so far. furthermore i suspect the plugin is missing the --user option when calling dspam, since this seems to be mandatory [4,5], but unfortunately adding this option in the plugin doesn't change its behavior. i am working on a debian system and currently using dovecot 1.0.beta3-3, dspam 3.6.4-2+b1 and the dspam-plugin "for dovecot beta 2 and 3". 1) calling dspam from the commandline with the same parameters as in the (slightly modified) plugin works fine :/# su virtual :/$ /usr/bin/dspam --user retrain --source=error --stdout --class=spam --signature=4,4434846e237406491211187 --debug -> /var/log/dspam.debug No QuarantineAgent option found. Hello. I have dovecot .99.14, sendmail, squirrelmail installed. Squirrelmail logins in fine and works with the IMAP server. I set up Outlook to connect to the imap server and it hangs. I telneted to the IMAP port and receive the following: * OK dovecot ready. a1 login aalang a1 BAD Error in IMAP command received by server. BYE BYE BAD Error in IMAP command received by server. I try STATUS and same thing happens. I searched the Internet for a bit and I didn't find anything that seemed helpful. Any ideas?

I set up postfix/dovecot with the dovecot-LDA according to the dovecot wiki, in particular: http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA#head-dacb9b9a1f19c3ea86bb6f8caa3d64e3ddad9ef8 For separation of privileges, I want to have one uid per virtual domain rather than have the vmail user own all directories under the mailstore. Therefore the LDA, deliver, in order to deliver must fulfill one of the following: a) it must be started as root b) it must be setuid c) it must have write access to the user's mailstore even as an unprivileged user itself. But a) postfix declines to this: postfix/pipe[26267]: fatal: user= command-line attribute specifies root privileges which is probably a good thing. b) will work, but I'm really wary of making anything setuid c) could be done if the group that deliver runs as (as defined in the user= attribute in master.cf) is the same as the group of each mailstore directory and that this group has write permissions *and* the sticky bit of each mailstore directory is set so that the file created by deliver is owned by the uid of the mailstore owner not deliver's uid. This is not exactly a question as such because I believe, subject to a little testing, that I have a working mail setup. However, I believe in doing things the right way wherever possible and I'm sure someone must have come across this before, so I'm submitting to the list inviting comment. After setting up a very sweet Dovecot installation (with OpenLDAP) we're finding something strange: passwords are accepted but only the first 8 characters and anything less than 8 characters is an invalid password For several reasons, including allowing longer passwords to make them more difficult to crack, I'd rather be able to use longer passwords. LDAP seems to have attributes for minimum and maximum password lengths. Ours is set currently at 256 char maximum. So my guess is that Dovecot may be doing something, or there's a configuration item I missed. Checked all the docs and the wiki. Anyone? Mark Richards

Hello, Running FC5 x86_64 with dovecot-1.0-0_8.beta3.rhfc5.at Using system user/passwds for 99.99% of users...have sql user/pass enabled to test virtual users from mysql. How do I strip off the domain when users provide user(a)domain.com so that my userdb and passdb use just 'user'? (disregarding sql auth...I'm not concerned with that right now). My dovecot.conf auth config: passdb pam { args = dovecot } passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-sql.conf } userdb passwd { } userdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-sql.conf } Can I just pass userdb the 'user' using an args= statement? %d? ...and then also to the passdb? So if I understand this correctly, %u matches the whole username in the sql database, but %n only matches the name before @? One thing we discovered in migrating from courier-imap to Dovecot is that courier-imap supported user@domain as a valid login name, where by default using %u in the SQL query, Dovecot does not. So it would have been useful for us to avoid a number of tech support calls for users who have user@domain configured in their mail clients. -- Roger J. SEARCH is probably the slowest command that Dovecot has, especially when searching texts from message bodies. There exists a lot of text search engines, but unfortunately as far as I know there exists only one that can be used with IMAP. The reason why IMAP is special is because it requires that when searching eg. "ello", it must match also mails which contain eg. word "hello". Most search engines support only matching either complete words or matching from the beginning of the words. So, the one usable engine which I know of is Cyrus's squat indexing. It works basically by indexing the mails in 4 byte blocks and storing them in a trie. So if there exists a string "he llo", it indexes "he l", "e ll" and " llo" strings. When searching it then gets the first 4 bytes of the search keyword, looks them up from the squat index and then once it gets a list of matched mails, it reads the mails and does a proper search for only them. So the squat index doesn't give exact results, but only narrows down the number of mails which have to be searched. The biggest problem with those squat indexes is that it doesn't support incremental updates, so there has to be some nightly runs to rebuild the indexes from scratch. And with lots of users that's not practical, so I think that's the reason why the squat indexes aren't all that commonly used with Cyrus. I was thinking about taking the basic ideas from the Cyrus squat indexer but making it possible to update it incrementally so Dovecot could do it automatically. Also to reduce space I was thinking about sorting the 4 byte strings so instead of eg. "abcd", "dcba" and "abdc" all being indexed, they could all be stored as "abcd" (so the search key would also have to be sorted before use). But that might cause larger result sets making the search slower, so I'll have to test if it's worth it. Unicode characters might also be a problem. If the characters are stored in 16bit characters, it would waste space. If they're stored in UTF-8 the 4 bytes might not be enough to give a useful index (as a single character might take even 5 bytes). One thing I was thinking was to not index in 4 byte blocks, but 4 character blocks in UTF-8, so the trie could be 4..20 levels deep depending on what unicode characters are used (in finnish text it would probably be max. 7 levels deep). So, now would be a good time to tell if you can think of some better ideas how to do this, especially if you know about some new algorithms specifically designed for this kind of searching. :) Pretty much all the algorithms I've found about this were suffix trees/arrays and this basic trie thing.

Hello, I've taken a different (better) approach to getting tpop3d-compatible UIDLs: the first attached patch (...md5_modifier.diff) adds a variable expansion modifier (%M) to return the md5sum of the expanded variable in hex. With the patch, you can get tpop3d-compatible UIDLs by setting pop3_uidl_format to %Mf. While testing interactions with other modifiers (e.g. %MUf to get the md5sum in uppercase), I noticed that %U is broken -- it lowercases the input just as %L does. The second patch (...ucase_modifier_fix.diff) is a one-liner to fix that. Finally, the third attached patch (...apop_aesthetics.diff) is another trivial patch to add a space between the server greeting and the APOP challenge. I think it looks better when telnetting to the server to diagnose something, and since spaces are stripped from the end of the login_greeting, editing the code is the only way to add the space. I have a new install of FC5 running dovecot 1.0.0 beta 2.7. I get my mail with POP3 but I have a user using IMAP. They both work great but I keep getting a message from dovecot in my mail saying DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE -- FOLDER INTERNAL DATA. I think it is there to help keep track of IMAP messages. Since I use POP3 is there any way not to have it show up all the time? I've deleted it, I've deleted my account and re-added it but it keeps coming back. Hi, I'm using Dovecot v1.0.beta5 (NetBSD 3.0, i386) and Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 (XP, i386). My dovecot.conf is pretty simple, because I just use dovecot for me as the only user. However, when I try to move a 'larger' amount of mails (>200) from my local TB-mbox to the remote IMAPS-storage, the process hangs after about 150 - 160 transferred mails (the 'blocking' mail is _never_ the same). I don't have the slightest clue why - there is nothing in the logs - even if I turn 'verbose_ssl' on. After a while, TB tells me, that the server timed out and dovecot says: "imap(petar): Disconnected" Usually - if I close my MUA correctly - dovecot says: "imap(petar): Disconnected: Logged out" Is somebody maybe experiencing something similar? Dear friends, I am trying to upgrade dovecot 1.0-alpha3 to dovecot 1.0-beta 5, but I have some problems to do that. When I install its rpm I get a message which indicates I have to install some dependences such as openssl-0.9.7f-7.i386, sqlite-3.2.8-1.9.el4 and libk5crypto.so.3. I haven't had any problems with openssl and sqlite but I always get a message that I need to have the libraries of libk5crypto. Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.0_beta3 on Gentoo Linux, and am experiencing a problem of what I call 'phantom mail'. This problem I have for a long time (pre 1.0), but at the moment I'm using 1.0_beta3 and the problem still is in there. My setup is as follows: - regular x86 box - running Exim and Dovecot - Exim saves new mail in maildir format in a local filesystem /mail/user/blabla - Dovecot reads and serves IMAP from local filesystem /mail/user/blabla - client is Mutt and/or Thunderbird from any OS (Mac, Linux, Windows) via IMAP Situation that happens: I get new mail in a folder, say =news (in Mutt style, it's .news dir in the maildir directory). I read the item, Mutt (or Thunderbird) marks the item as read (moving it over to cur aswell I think), save the folder, then move on to another folder. At this point dovecot IMAP server indicates to the client that there is new mail in the folder =news. If I visit the folder with the client, I see no new mail, and sometimes I have two or three of those folders, and I can keep on cycling with Mutt till I get bored :). Before upgrading Dovecot, I knew of no way to resolve this problem; eventually, it seemed that at some point the folder seemed to figure out itself that there was indeed no new mail. Sometimes I could trick it by letting Mutt mark the mail as new again, and then save the folder. Didn't always work. Now, I think a week or two ago I upgraded Dovecot and had to manually move all the .subscription files, and I also in one go decided to remove the dovecot* and .imap* files. That cleaned up, and at first that looked like it solved my problem. Not. So I figured out throwing away dovecot's index stuff (rm dovecot* in the directory that shows phantom mail) resolves the problem. However, this method starts to get annoying so to say. The 1141544380 entry comes from the first row of the dovecot-uidlist file: 1 1141544380 51 I guess it's just some sort of line to keep track of the last timestamp and the number of messages or something. If my theory is right here then it looks as if the 'bad entry' is actually more recent than this most recent timestamp reports. But this is only speculation of course. Enough for this lenghty mail I guess. Is this a known issue, or can it be caused by the way I set up my system? I must note that this only happens for some folders, not all of them. We are currently running a production mail server using version 0.990.99.11-2 (latest RPM from RHEL/CentOS). We would like to migrate more virtual domains off our courier imap server to dovecot but the courier imap user passswords are stored in LDAP and are SSHA hashed which is not supported by our current version of dovecot (CRYPT only). >From reading the mailing lists this feature is now available but I am hesitant to move a production server to a beta software release. Apart from waiting for a 1.0-final RPM, what is the simplest/best way for us to allow dovecot to read existing SSHA hashed passwords within LDAP? Any help would be much appreciated. Gavin

We have the exact same problem. Everything is fine with beta3, but the latest betas have problems with Horde. We are using FreeBSD and Horde 3.1. The logs show connections from 127.0.0.1. Login is successful, but the user is immediately disconnected. Before trying to Luis' suggestion, I had the following in /var/log/messages: dovecot(pam_unix)[4691]: check pass; user unknown dovecot(pam_unix)[4691]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= dovecot-auth[4691]: pam_ldap: could not open secret file /etc/ldap.secret (No such file or directory) I suppose the first two entries are the lookup for the dovecot user in the DS, where it doesn't exist. And since I want anonymous binds to the DS, I haven't created file /etc/ldap.secret. Users were able to authenticate and get their mail. After changing to auth_userdb = passwd, all the messages went away, but the users weren't able to get their mail: Evolution gave me the following error: "Unable to get a valid greeting" from the mailserver. I went back to auth_userdb = ldap /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf, and then back to auth_userdb = passwd. Users can get their mail, but the messages are back in the log file. Hello. I'm just wondering, that maybe is the time to change the imap -s format or add some more features, are in these day's most people, me also are so called mobile users. And imap is good solution for us but however still some basic things are missing, fore example: 1) Server side mail filters. I read mails from home, from office and from webmail. Now when I need to make mail filter, for example to collect all dovecot mails into one subfolder, I can do it in one computer, and they works, if the computer is online, but if I need to change them, reading email from the another computer, I can't do it. 2) Server side address book. Yes, I know, ldap is solution, but installing and configuring the ldap server for some simple global address book, is kind of overkill. And these rules/address book can be from client to see as subfolder, so every imap capable client can deal with them? Is this real on not? -- Sysadmin

Is anyone out there doing this just first of all to confirm to me that the combination works OK. If the first message in an mbox is deleted by an external program, therefore removing the X-IMAPbase header, an error such as the following occurs. Apr 9 20:10:51 sm1 dovecot: imap(306812): file mbox-sync-update.c: line 460 (mbox_sync_update_header_from): assertion failed: (ctx->mail.uid == 0 || ctx->mail.uid_broken || ctx->mail.uid == mail->uid) This prevents the user from logging in, but also appears to cause mbox corruption. If the X-IMAPbase and the X-UID headers are missing, Dovecot will insert them successfully, but fails to do so when only the X-IMAPbase header is missing. Using dovecot-1.0.beta3.

Hi all, I'm wondering if theres a way to report the quota, but not enforce it? The problem is that i'm using dirsize as the quota method to calculate the size of the mail directory, and for very large mailboxes this can take time... what i thought would be good, would be if dovecot could report the quota when the user requests it, but doesn't calculate it for every operation it performs? Does any one have any suggestions? I'm using Dovecot 1.0 beta5 My config: mail_plugins = imap_quota quota The quota for a mailbox is stored in sql, and so the sql query returns a "quota" which is picked up by the quota plugin Michael

Hi! I'm currently investigating a switch from courier-imap to dovecot since a number of our users experience problems with Outlook in combination with SSL. I can compile dovecot with openssl support and it runs "fine" except that the Outlook issues are still there. I read that dovecot works best with GnuTLS and thought that I'd try to compile for that instead. The system is running SuSE 9.3. I've installed the gnutls-library and configure runs fine, but make stops. Hi, I've seen you commited a lot of quota work tonight. I'm still unable to get the filesystem quota working, and I wonder if it's just me that is stupid, or if theres a bug somewhere. I enable quota and imap_quota plugins, I set fs in my ldap-base for quota, and logons. I then get this: dovecot: imap(ingvild): fs quota add storage dir = /home/ingvild/Maildir dovecot: imap(ingvild): fs quota: mount path for /home/ingvild/Maildir not found from /etc/mtab In my logs... Hi all, I've been having some issues with the ssl-parameters.dat file from dovecot 1.0 beta 2 on MacOS X 10.4.6 client. As I understand it, the user/group on the file should be root:wheel, and I have changed ownership accordingly. However, on occation this gets set to root:dovecot by some process I haven't yet identified, which causes the ssl-parameters.dat file to be regenerated once every 10 minutes instead of the default. Does anyone have an idea what is going on, or how I can avoid this? Best, Lars

[Dovecot] Feature Request: Config Dump

Hello, One of the less friendly lists I am on is the Postfix list, but one of the features that Postfix has, and the use of which is required when asking for help on their list, is a command called 'postconf', which simply dumps the current configuration parameters into a neat, orderly output that you can then cut-n-paste into an email request for help. The postfix guys won't even try to address a problem without this output (as opposed to snippets from config files), combined with log snippets of the failing behavior (as opposed to bounced message text, or 'it don't work' comments). So, what I'd like to see is something similar - a command that I can issue that will cause Dovecot to dump all of the configuration parameters it is currently using in a neat, orderly arrangement. This would dramatically help individual users in troubleshooting their own problems, as well as help people on this list help others. It would totally eliminate all of the 'what is xys set to' questions back and forth. But I'm more interested in how it will simply help me to see how I have it configured, and allow me to easily spot conflicting or misconfigured parameters. -- Best regards, Charles

Hi, I'm trying to configure DoveCot to allow NTLM authentication. I've successfully authenticated with Outlook 2003 against Dovecot when the passdb backend used to store the password is a passwd-file. It doesn't matter if the passwd-file contains plain or NTLM encrypted passwords. When I compare the NTLM hash provided by the dovecotpw utility to the one I have in my SAMBA ldap, it appears to be exactly the same. When I use the LDAP passdb backend, I can see in the log file that dovecot has received the correct NTLM hash value, but outlook fails to authenticate successfully. I'm using the debianized dovecot version v1.0.beta2. I can post my dovecot-ldap.conf file, if it will help. Can anybody help me configure my dovecot to allow Outlook to perform NTLM authentication when the password database is in LDAP? Thanks, Lior Okman

Hello, I have dovecot setup to pull passwords stored in plain from a database. My allowed authentication mechanisms are cram-md5 and digest-md5. Cram works but digest fails on my evolution client with and authentication failed. The server is running dovecot 0.99.14-1 on debian sarge. The user logging in is test(a)advanced-reality.com. I finally started looking into how to use libwrap, and even got the code working: http://dovecot.org/patches/1.0/tcp-wrappers.patch However once everything was done, I realized it can't work that way because login processes are normally chrooted. So if you want TCP wrappers and don't care that much about the security given by chrooting, you could disable it and use the above patch. Alternatively you could just make sure that the hosts.allow/deny files are always copied inside the chroot. I think I'll just forget about TCP wrappers for now, and implement it in Dovecot 2.0 as some separate non-chrooted process.

Dear All, I was wondering if this is possible: I am using namespaces to support my environment which has legacy mboxes and new maildirs. In it looks like: namespace private { separator = / inbox = yes prefix = location = maildir:/home/virtual/%d/home/%n/Maildir/ } namespace private { separator = / prefix = mail2/ inbox = yes hidden = yes location = mbox:/home/virtual/%d/home/var/spool/mail/%n:INBOX=/home/virtual/%d/var/spool/mail/%n } This basically means that there is a hidden inbox "mail2/INBOX" that the user cannot see but which can referenced and accessed. What I would like is for Dovecot to automatically move all mail (actually only as much as possible within quota limits) in "mail2/INBOX" into "/INBOX" whenever INBOX is checked/expunged. An alternative acceptable solution is to have something that moves mail once it has read. I would then symlink mail2/INBOX as a "New mail" folder. Once user's read their mail it is moved to the standard /INBOX folder. Are either of the above possible natively or do I need to look at something like plugins? Incidently where is the documentation guiding plugin development? I've looked at the website but can't find anything either by browsing or searching. Many thanks, Daniel

Hello, just to soothe my paranoia from many years of qpopper usage, which enforces solitary access to a POP mailbox. Only one login per user is possible at the same time and if a session terminates w/o qpopper being properly notified it will remain locked for some time, 30 minutes by default. With dovecot (0.99.10.4) one can login multiple times (using POP, with IMAP of course this comes as no surprise :) and thus I presume this bit from the configuration: --- # Should we create dotlock file even when we want only a read-lock? Setting # this to yes hurts the performance when the mailbox is accessed simultaneously # by multiple processes, but it's needed for reliable reading if no other # locking methods are available. #mbox_read_dotlock = no --- means that if the only other reading accesses to a (mbox style in this case here) mailbox are via other dovecot processes everything will be fine? Hi there We are trying to move over from 1 IMAP server to another, but the problem is dovecot does not allow .'s in folder names (and we have quite a number of people who do have .'s in their folder names (ie "www.domain stuff") Is there anyway of allowing dovecot to allow .'s in folder names? Hi. I'm testing out the new 'master users' feature, and I'm not having any luck getting it to work. Anyone out there using it yet? I just transferred over my first server from Suse Linux with uw-imap(ipop3/imap2003) to CentOS with Dovecot (0.99). I didn't find any problems in the testing phase, but when the actual transfer into production happened I found a few problems crop up: 1. Dovecot wants to chdir in the user's home directory even when logging in via POP3. However, the mailboxes for POP3 are all in /var/spool/mail. What's the reason for this and can I stop this? 2. In addition I found that the home directories need additional permissions I did not need when using ipop3/imap2003, although this imap server needs to write/read in the same directories as dovecot. Specifically, I had to change the permissions on the directory right above the pop user directories from 750 to 755. Those directories are owned by the user and the primary group he belongs to. It seems that dovecot somehow doesn't "use" the primary group of the user and so can't traverse thru and the chdir fails. 3. Furthermore, Dovecot created an IMAP directory structure within the home directory of most users like "mail/.imap/INBOX" (on some it reused the existing Mail -uppercase- directory). Just on a simple first POP3 login. What's the reason for doing this? Maybe that user is never going to use IMAP? Does it test for both mail and Mail before it creates it's own structure or what does it do? I assume this is related to default_mail_env? 4. [Dovecot] LDA and Shared Mailboxes

I'm hoping LDA has what I'm looking for, basically, I want to be able to deliver mail, to a shared mailbox. Ideally, I'd like a method of determining what address can send to the shared mailbox, and I don't like the idea of having to copy emails into the mailbox, to 'send' to it. Is there some way that message uids can be preserved when converting uw-pop3 mbox mail to dovecot maildir format? We've tried perfect_maildir, mb2md and the convert-tool that comes with dovecot but so far have been unable to preserve the message uids, which for example go from 44333a8500000003 before the conversion to 4434621500000003 afterwards. The quantity of mailboxes involved means forcing users to re-pop old emails left on the server isn't an option. Any help appreciated.

I've configured dovecot to authenticate against a Fedora Directory Server. The mail server on which dovecot is installed has the nss_ldap and pam_ldap packages installed, and /etc/dovecot.conf has the following two lines: auth_userdb = ldap /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf auth_passdb = pam In other words, I want dovecot to use LDAP to access the user database, but PAM for authentication. This part is working, since users authenticate and get their mails correctly through dovecot. /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf contains the following: hosts = 192.168.0.2 ldap_version = 3 base = ou=People, dc=duraflex, dc=com, dc=sv deref = never scope = subtree user_attrs = uid,homeDirectory,,,uidNumber,gidNumber user_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=%u)) I haven't specified a dn or dnpass, since all I need is that dovecot perform an anonymous query for the uid, homeDirectory, uidNumber and gidNumber fields of its users, which are publically viewable. Hey folks, Let me start by saying I really love what I see so far! Dovecot seems to be extremely feature-rich, and unlike a lot of free software the documentation is extremely good! I gave up on courier IMAP because of the poor documentation, and I have to say Dovecot sure differentiates itself in that area! Unfortunately I still can't get it going :-/ First thing I noticed is that --with-shadow does not appear to be working on my FreeBSD 6.0 system. Here is what I built with : ./configure --prefix=/usr/local --enable-shared --enable-static --disable-ipv6 --with-ioloop =poll --with-passwd --with-shadow --with-pam --with-passwd-file --without-checkpassword --wit hout-bsdauth --without-gssapi --without-ldap --with-static-userdb --without-prefetch-userdb --without-sql --without-mysql --without-ssl --with-rundir=/var/run/dovecot --with-storages=mb ox --without-sql-drivers However : root@heimat# dovecot --build-options Build options: ioloop=poll Passdb: checkpassword pam passwd passwd-file vpopmail Userdb: checkpassword passwd passwd-file static vpopmail And when I try to include the shadow options in the config file I get this in the log file : Apr 8 17:07:38 heimat dovecot: auth(default): Unknown passdb driver 'shadow' (typo, or Dovecot was built without support for it? Beta3 continues to work great for me; imap-login for it notes "method=PLAIN, TLS" in the syslogs. There were no real changes in my dovecot.conf between beta3 and beta5. What broke? There was a thread in February called "One dovecot, multiple domains" that I'd like to follow up on... I have a similar need; a hosted system with a couple IP aliases currently running dovecot for users at imap.domain1.com on one of those addresses. Now I need to also make it accessible via the name imap.domain2.com on a different address. Both "hosts" require SSL certs. They'll be using the same user auth source and have access to the same mailspools (although certain users will access theirs through domain1 and others through domain2). It sounds like dovecot doesn't support this sort of ip-based virtual hosting scheme right now. Is it possible to just configure two separate instances of the server, one bound to each virtual interface with their separate certs? Or are there issues with this poor man approach (contention, etc)? TIA; nap.

Maybe you guys seen this question a thousand times but really I can't find a solution. So is there anybody who can give me a direction or a clue to solve my problem. I configured my dovecot as follows: protocols = imap pop3 imaps pop3s login_chroot = yes login_user = dovecot auth_verbose = yes auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb passwd { args = /etc/passwd } userdb passwd { args = /etc/passwd } user = root } The maillog gives me that there is password mismatch, but I'm 100 % sure that the password is correct. I allso looked in my /etc/passwd file and the user is there. The user is all so able to login the Linux system. My system is Fedora redhat RC 5. Dovecot is v1.0.beta2. I attached the last rules of my maillog. Is there anybody who can please help me. Using kmail with PLAIN authentication worked fine with beta3 but trying it with beta4 authentication fails. This is because kmail sends "username \0 username \0 password" in the authorization token and the new code to call auth_request_set_login_username() when supplied an authid must be returning failure (certainly commenting this code out returns to the beta3 behaviour of successfully authenticating). I had a quick look at the routine to see why it might be failing but didn't really work out what its supposed to do. cheers mark

I did not use the the libc-client Perl bindings...sorry. I used a modified version of mb2md-3.20. It was pretty simple really. If you'd like to look at/dowload the source please visit: http://svn.dcs.it.mtu.edu/email.mtu.edu/convert_tools/tags/mb2md-release-4.… (I have my own release numbers for the whole system I wrapped around mb2md). Not a lot of documentation and there is a lot that is specific to my site, but it shouldn't be too hard to decipher and you can always ask me questions, though I'm going to take a well earned next 2 days off. If anyone is interested, the conversion we just performed has been in place for ~5 days now. Only a handful of the ~30,000 users we converted noticed we even did anything (except performance) is better (this was in large part due to the UIDL code I added to mb2md). We are now huge Dovecot fans! Hi, I have some real users and some virtual users. The real users use mbox file as their inbox. But I'd like to use Maildir as inbox for the virtual users. (The reason is that I am actually moving some accounts from another server that already uses Maildir.) I'd like Dovecot to find Maildir in $HOME of my virtual users as their inbox. Hi all. Can any C programmers out there tell me how to fix Dovecot to default to Maildir format when autodecting can't find anything? I don't know C, but it seems like it would be a simple thing. Right now, I use the autodetect mailbox feature because we want users to choose to optionally be able to use Mbox format (we have some diehard unix users with non-maildir clients). I have Maildrop setup to check for the existance of a ~/Maildir folder in the user's home, and if it exists, it delivers there. Otherwise it falls back to ~/Mail where mbox style files go. The problem with Dovecot is there is no way to tell the autodetect feature what to default to, and if it can't find anything, it automatically creates a folder called ~/mail under the user's home and primes it with an Mbox file, but I'd rather it create a ~/Maildir instead. So if we have for example, a new user with no mail yet, and they log in via IMAP before getting any mail from maildrop, Dovecot will create a them a ~/mail folder. So when they DO get mail, our maildrop filters will think they are an Mbox user. I could do some fancy Maildrop filters to fix that when they get their first mail, but in the meantime the unknowing user could try creating things via IMAP that gets overwritten. Anyway, it would be much cleaner if Dovecot just did what I wanted. If anyone could point me to the place to patch my copy of Dovecot, I would GREATLY apprecieate it. I don't know C, but I know many other languages. I would also like to see this be added via the config file in future releases. So consider this a feature request. Not only that, but more control over the autodetection process in general would be REALLY nice. Thanks. Adam

I'm working on migrating to Dovecot. At the moment, I have a mail path that includes the domain, so I'm using %d to get that. However, if users authenticate without specifying a domain (i.e. using "bob" instead of "bob(a)wiktel.com"), then %d expands to nothing. I'd like to have that expand to a default domain (wiktel.com) instead. Is that possible? Thanks, Richard

I have setup Dovecot 1.0B3, and IMAP works fine, but I cannot get IMAPS to work. I've generated the keys with the mkcert script and Thunderbird can see and accept the certificate but tosses an error just after that. I haven't had yet time to read all the mails in this list which I skipped in the last few of weeks. I'll try to get to them eventually. This release contains several new features which haven't been fully tested yet, such as ACLs, master users and Maildir++ quota. If you intend to use them, test them properly first. This is the first Dovecot release where it's supposed to work well with NFS. Even with indexes being stored in NFS. I was able to test it only with Linux 2.4 kernels as clients though, and it didn't work well in a stress test. It looked like the problem was caused by the kernel caching the data a bit too much. Hopefully I can test soon with 2.6 kernels. Also note the other changes which might affect you. Especially if you're using Dovecot-LDA remember to upgrade it as well to make sure the default lock_method gets updated in it also. As for the future, it looks like I'm getting soon paid to develop several features to improve Dovecot's performance (by the company which already paid for ACLs, NFS fixes and many other changes in this release, thanks!). * Changed the default lock_method back to fcntl. Apparently flock gives problems with some systems. * mbox: mailboxes beginning with '.' are now also listed * Replaced mail_use_modules and mail_modules settings with mail_plugins and mail_plugin_dir. Now instead of loading all plugins from the directory, you'll have to give a list of plugins to load. If the plugin couldn't be loaded, the process exits instead of just ignoring the problem (this is important with ACL plugin). + Added support for "master users" who can log in as other people. The master username can be given either in authorization ID string with SASL PLAIN mechanism or by setting auth_master_user_separator and giving it within the normal username string. + Added ACL plugin with ACL file backend. This however doesn't mean that there yet exists a proper shared folder support. If master user logged in as someone else, the ACLs are checked as the master user. + Added some Dovecot extensions to checkpassword passdb, see ChangeLog + Updated passwd-file format to allow specifying any key=value fields + Maildir++ quota support and several quota fixes + passdb supporting extra fields: Added "allow_nets" option which takes a comma separated list of IPs/networks where to allow user to log in. + NFS: Handle ESTALE errors the best way we can + IMAP now writes to log when client disconnects + In shared mailboxes (if dovecot-shared file exists) \Seen flags are now kept only in index files, so as long as each user has a separate index file they have separate \Seen flags. - Fixes to DIGEST-MD5 realm handling so it works with more clients - BODYSTRUCTURE -> BODY conversion from cache file was broken with mails containing message/rfc822 parts. - Fixed several memory leaks - We could have sent client FETCH notifications about messages before telling about them with EXISTS - Compiling fixes for Solaris and some other OSes - Fixed problem with internal timeout handling code, which caused eg. outlook-idle workaround to break. - If /dev/urandom didn't exist, we didn't seed OpenSSL's random number generator properly. Hello! Yesterday I upgraded from 1.0beta3 to 1.0beta4. I've major problems now with my inbox (quite large, 900MB) and another large folder. Thunderbird 1.5 connects and disconnects. I tried to delete the indexes of dovecot and thunderbird without any sucess. Finally I downgraded to 1.0beta3 and it works well again (Beta3 was running for a timeframe from when it came out and now without any problems). Config is the same as for 1.0beta3. Hello, I have used mb2md for an individual user like this: su ~username cd ~ ./mb2md -m This converted /var/spool/mail/username mbox to /home/users/username/Maildir just as I expected. To convert 100s of users the same way would be a chore (su as each user for permissions, etc.). Is there a way to batch process all /var/spool/mail/$USER to /home/users/$USER/Maildir with the correct permissions/file owners for each user?

We went through a courier to dovecot conversion. There are a couple of things that might be causing this problem. 1. Dovecot namespaces 2. Client configuration Your namespaces might not be taking into account the fact that courier prefixed all files and directories in the maildir with a dot (.). You can get around this a couple of ways. We had almost no IMAP clients under courier, so I renamed everything in our IMAP client directories away from .files and .directories, and used a default namespace without dots. Also some clients like Apple Mail needed an IMAP prefix like INBOX. to work with courier. I had to remove those with the dovecot namespace I set up. -- Roger J. Timo, Here's an example of the filesystem quota issue: A user was near his hard filesystem quota, so he moved some junk to his Trash folder to clear disk space. He got the following error on his IMAP client: "Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. {2006-04033 11:08:44]". I was seeing this also with 0.9, not just 1.0 betas. With x86_64 packages, any slight change to the main dovecot.conf file can prevent dovecot from starting (segfault with "Unexpected eof found when reading file 'UNOPENED' (Errcode: 0)" message), whereas i386 packages work somewhat better. This is on the same machine with an i386 compatibility layer. Is anyone using MySQL auth successfully? Any help or pointers would be more than welcome. Hi, I think the problem is in Dovecot. I'm using both Evolution and Thunderbird on a Gentoo box. One of my folders keeps locking up and the clients can't retrieve the messages. The situation appears to be triggered by trying to move a message into that folder. Deleting the index files (under /var/log/dovecot/xxx/) solves the problem (temporarily). [Dovecot] imap processes remaing after dovecot shutdown

Hello, I'm using dovecot-1.0.beta3. When I shutdown dovecot (kill -term on the master-pid) the main process disappears, but all the child processes still remain. Why doesn't dovecot kill them as I shutdown the master-process? When I shutdown mysql, all child processes will be shutdown, too. When I shutdown apache, all child processes willbe shutdown, too. Thats what I expect on every application. Usually there is no need to shutdown dovecot. But for some reasons, from time to time 50 and more processes of one user are running and I don't know how else to get rid of them. I don't like to kill the child processes always manually. Ok, it worked once, then stopped working. To get away from maybe it being a thunderbird setup issue, I made a little php script. And now I have an error that didn't show up in the dovecot log even though I have auth_debug and auth_verbose set to yes. Hi all, I just maked $SUBJECT to run. The main problem was, that in Dovecot are by default enabled only plain digest-md5 and cram-md5 authentication mechanisms. While MS Outlook knows only "LOGIN" mechanism. So, Outlook users wasn't able to use SMTP AUTH. The solution is to change a line in dovecot.conf: mechanisms = plain digest-md5 cram-md5 to: mechanisms = plain digest-md5 cram-md5 login I suggest Timo to change the default configuration, and the page http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication -- more precisely the line "LOGIN: Similiar to PLAIN, not very useful. [in 1.0-tests only]" -- I think, that this line is a little confusing. Becouse since one can use Dovecot for SASL authentication, "LOGIN" is starting to be useful (because of the M*S* bullshit). Are there any how-tos or documentation on getting dovecot to be thunderbird/outlook friendly? Thunderbird can connect about 20% of the time, the other 80% of the time, I Get the error: "You may need to connect via SSL or TLS. Please check the account settings for your mail server." I have my thunderbird setup to do TLS. I've put it on the TLS if available as well, still no love. Tks ----------------------------------------------------- Hi I am testing FC5 before upgrading my main server and I am getting errors with dovecot 1.0 beta3 - both the distributed RPM and also the one at ATrpms and thunderbird (the distributed version which is thunderbird-1.5-6) I am running both dovecot and thunderbird on the same machine, pointing thunderbird at 127.0.0.1 for its imap server. The symptoms are an inability to access mail - thunderbird just keeps on trying and getting nowhere and even if I shut down thunderbird on the client, it still leaves processes running that have to be killed by hand. [Dovecot] Courier to Dovecot Maildir converstion

Hello, I am running Dovecot 0.99 on OpenSuse 10.0. Previously, I was running courier IMAP with vpopmail on Suse 9.3. In the process of the change, I decided to sing MySQL to authenticate the users, provide home dir, uid and gid. I tar'ed up the old mail directories, moved them to the new server, added a new user and group to own the files, set the files uid/gid to match the values in the db. Next, I followed the Migration directions on http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration. I can successfully authenticate the new users, have no errors in the log file but when I am logged in I only see the Inbox. There should be other folders as well as mail in the inbox. No errors in the log files. Any ideas?

Hello I've migrated to dovecot-1.0beta3 and I have taken over the password files from an older system. For some reason the md5 hashs have "[" chars in the salt. For example like this $1$[xxxXX[E$bg/d4JdSSf2kTL8sXXxXXX Now the problem is that in the file src/auth/db-passwd-file.c on line 43 for libpam-pwdfile compatibility it will be searched for "[" to find the type of the password hash. Then only the hash up to this point will be used in future for comparing the passwords. The problem line. p = pass == NULL ? NULL : strchr(pass, '['); I changed the behavior to always use the complete hash out of the file because I don't use pam. Does anyone know if [ chars are allowed in md5 hashs? Greetings I'm currently working on a design, to integrate an IMAP server into our existing mail architecture. It's proving to be a difficult exercise, mainly because of how we structure our quotas. In our system, the quota covers more than just email. We have a single quota that covers email, ftp directory, and personal homepage. The quota is stored in a mysql database, in a werid table structure. The quota allocation is stored against the user, while the quota usage is stored in 3 rows per user, in a seperate table; One row each for www, email, and ftp per user. I'm currently trying to figure out how we could integrate this quota into Dovecot. I'm quite happy to write plugin to handle updating the quota in our system, but I have no idea where to start. Any information you could provide on updating a quota in a third party system would be much appreciated. Thanks for you help. It seems to be ignoring the userdb_* fields. Hello all, Recently, I was setting up SpamAssassin and procmail on my system (used to run Courier, and was converted using Courier convert scripts). I was setting up a rule in PINE to filter all previously marked SPAM messages into a folder, when I suddenly got disconnected from the IMAP server. I attempted to reconnect, but any attempts to access my INBOX would disconnect me. Hello...I'll TRY make this short. This post is not specific to Dovecot...but many subscribers to this list have probably been down this road. (private replies welcome if you want it to go off list) I currently use Sendmail with MailScanner, SpamAssassin, ClamAV, Procmail, and qpopper for POP3 (hash mail dirs for mbox files)on RedHat 9 server. Roaming users currently only have the option of UebiMiau webmail interface to POP3 (doesn't work well) I will be moving to a server with Fedora Core 5.(x86_64) Things I would like to accomplish: 1) Move to maildir mailbox format (currently large mbox files cause I/O flushing errors and problems for users retrieving). 2) Use squirrelmail for webmail (IMAP) (local or roaming users) 3) Enable local users (ones with current accounts on the server) to continue to use their current client setup. 4) Enable any user to use the webmail interface to retrieve/send email. 5) Enable roaming users (ones connected from any location) to use Outlook Express or similar with SMTP_Auth and port 587 for message submission and POP3/IMAP. 6) Enable mail quota. I want the current users to use their current settings (unless they roam...then require that they use webmail or SMTP_Auth and port 587), but moving forward with new users, I have no reason to give them shell access/system accounts....so I was thinking virtual users using user@domain and storing their auth information in mysql db. (mysql will be used for radius...so it is already running on the server). Because I am trying to figure out how to keep the existing users system accounts and move forward with new users only having virtual accounts (just mail access with no login), I don't think I can use file system quotas. I have used Sendmail for 10 years, so I am familiar with it and it has been very stable for me. (so I prefer to stick with it if I can) I rely heavily on MailScanner to scan/mark/clean virus and Procmail to filter marked spam. Qpopper is on the way out...A couple of weeks messing with the test server and I already love Dovecot. Questions: 1) Recommendations please: How to accomplish with what configuration. 2) Quotas? 3) SMTP_Auth using Mysql for virtual users? I saw some discussion on this from the middle of last year. Looking through the archives, there didn't seem to be a full solution using a standard dovecot configuration. Did this issue get resolved within dovecot? Will it strip domains from the login presented by the customer. I currently am using dovecot for imap with a webmail system (I strip the domain there before it hits dovecot), but I'd like to replace qpopper with dovecot's pop3, just need to work out the domain stripping bit. Hello, After a long break from Dovecot I finally managed to compile Dovecot-lda on RHEL 4 x86_64 platfrom. For some reason $LIBICONV translates to a @LIBICONV@ on config.status which generates loop for sed. Solution is to manually edit "configure" after autogen.sh. I tried putting login_greeting = Test Banner at the end of my dovecot.conf.:When i try restart the service it fails. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Hi, I am having some trouble with dovecot (0.99.14) and maildir. Some users are reporting that sometimes, they don't get (pop3, various clients) new mails for a while even though they should. I checked and confirmed this: mails were delivered by MTA (sendmail, procmail). But when the problem existed, the new mails were in cur/, not new/ and dovecot would not report any new messaged to the client. A 'solution' was to send another mail to the same account, and ususally this would end up in new/ On the next fetch, this new message and the new ones from cur/ are downloaded. I also had the same problem with imap and evolution today. My inbox showed as empty but there were many messages in cur/ I could access all other folders without a problem during this period. Again, a simple mail to myself 'solved' this. This behaviour does not happen all the time and I don't know how to trigger/reproduce it. Just the relevant (imho) parts of dovecot.conf: login_process_size = 256 login_processes_count = 64 login_max_logging_users = 1024 default_mail_env = maildir:%h/Maildir client_workarounds = outlook-idle oe6-fetch-no-newmail outlook-pop3-no-nuls everything else is set to default values Any ideas/help? Hi all, I've a problem during a big migration to dovecot. I'm not sure that is a really a dovecot bug ... but maybe somebody here know one solution ... I have more than 150000 imap account to migrate from an obscure mail system based on a database to an imap/dovecot system. During the migration (simple but very long process) I get a "Too many links" error from dovecot. This error is not obscure but I'm unable to find a solution with this error on google. I kown the /proc/sys/fs/file-max for increase the number of open file, but it's not the problem here. This probleme occure with more than 130000 directory and more than 350000 file. For example theyre downloading 20 mails, somehow when it reaches to 12 it disconnectes. Or the outlook client pops up some messages saying connection timeout? Hi I am testing FC5 before upgrading my main server and I am getting errors with dovecot 1.0 beta3 - both the distributed RPM and also the one at ATrpms thunderbird (the distributed version which is thunderbird-1.5-6) I am running both dovecot and thunderbird on the same machine, pointing thunderbird at 127.0.0.1 for its imap server. The symptoms are an inability to access mail - thunderbird just keeps on trying and getting nowhere and even if I shut down thunderbird on the client, it still leaves processes running that have to be killed by hand. Hi guys, just recently got a problem with my mail server. My clients are comlaining that whel receiving theyre emails after 7 mails received suddenly the connection has timeout. Another scenario is with attachments. Sending 1MB of attachment is not a problem, but receiving this attachement is. Suddenly it timeout for some while. Hello, today our dovecot imap server died. The following message appeared in the logfile: dovecot: Mar 23 07:00:58 Error: pipe() failed: Too many open files We have one dovecot instance for pop3 and one for imap, so while the pop3-service was still available, the imap-service was not running any more. I've seen a lots of users keeping there imap-connections idle for hours, often more than one per mailbox. How can I limit this? Can I limit the maximum time a connection can be open? Regards Marten

We're an ISP with approximately 9000 email customers. Up until early in January our primary mail servers ran on OS X, with exim as the MTA and courier-imap as the pop/imap server. We had continual problems with courier on OS X. The load it generates on the machine is horrible. You'll get absolutely no help from the courier mailing list or developers with OS X issues. When we started evaluating Dovecot, we first attempted it on OS X, however we were unable to get it running in an NFS environement on OS X in any sort of stable manner. I can't recommend highly enough getting off of OS X if you can for mail services. We went to Red Hat machines, and they have been amazingly stable and reliable. I love OS X, and use it for other things, but it makes a bad mail server at least for the volume of mail we process. -- Roger J. Hello, is the LDA linked against the Cyrus SIEVE library or against the fork at libsieve.sourceforge.net ? It seems Cyrus SIEVE from src/libsieve/README in the lda sources. libsieve seems to be better suited for inclusion in non-cyrus software and should be completely independent from libcyrus. hello, Sorry to jump straight in with a question, but I've searched the archive[0] and I'm pretty sure the answer's not there. I'm using dovecot to replace courier imap, so authentication is by vpopmail and the Maildirs are stored in the usual domains/domain/user/ Maildir. Everything seems to work very well, and setting it up has been easy, so thank you very much for that. I have only one problem left: %d is empty when interpolated into default_mail_env. I expect there's something obvious I'm doing wrong, but it's hard to tell because the wiki isn't always up to date (i'd be happy to update the vpopmail sections once this is working): Config has this [1]: default_mail_env = maildir:/home/vpopmail/domains/%d/%n/Maildir and i log in over imaps with the account i'm using for testing: username: sysadmin(a)spanner.org password: ... Thanks but for mbox it is ".subscriptions", "subscriptions" is for maildir, but I found the BUG !!! ~/mail/.subscriptions is on an NFS mounted filesystem, it keeps on getting deleted... does not like NFS (the files are renamed .nfsXXXXX when deleted) if I patch the code to get it on a local filesystem, like my indexes (in storage->index_dir instead of storage->dir): /var/indexes/%u/.subscriptions then it stays alive and work. [Dovecot] Clash between multiple authentication databases (security problem?)

Hi all, I just installed dovecot-1.0_beta2 and love it! However, I've run into issues using multiple authentication databases. I use both pam (for users on my system) and sql (for virtual users). I've noticed that if I have system user "userabc" and virtual user "userabc(a)otherdomain.com" (two distinct users) and my "auth default" section contains these passdb/userdb entries in this order (the order in the example config): passdb pam passdb sql userdb pam userdb sql then when userabc(a)otherdomain.com logs in, he'll get the system user userabc's mail instead of his own. It appears that the sql password check succeeds, then Dovecot grabs the home directory from pam, NOT sql. I can work around this by setting up "userdb prefetch" and adding that section *before* "userdb pam". If I put "userdb prefetch" after "userdb pam" or after "userdb sql", then Dovecot doesn't actually do the prefetch (which causes an error since Dovecot issues the default SQL query for "user_query", which my MySQL database doesn't like). Is there a safer way to do this? If not, should there be? Thanks! Hello. I have seen in recent posts that there are other people with this problem, and it is very important for me, as it is the only cause for not putting Dovecot in production in all mail servers in my University. When moving/copying messages, some of them get stuck in the tmp directory of the destination folder, effectively lost for the user. I have been tracing the problem, and it looks that it happens with messages that have flags. The others don't have problems. But if I copy/move several flagged messages, one of them is copied, and the others are kept in tmp. [Dovecot] OS X-centricities? Too many files, temp, indexes, etc...

I'm just writing to see if anyone else is seeing the following issues, and particularly if they are running OS X (especially 10.4), and/or have compatible solutions (I've been reading the mailing list quite a bit, and every now and then, I find a solution that just "doesn't work" because of the differences in OS: 1) Too many files open - no plimit command on OS X, so I can't figure out how to increase the max number of open files... Also, are there any alternative means of CLOSING the files? stopping/restarting dovecot didn't seem to help; 2) I was running 1.0beta1 last week, and am now on 1.0beta3, but I'm still not seeing corrupt indexes/other dovecot files rebuilding themselves. I really can't stick with this solution if I'll always have to worry about manually fixing broken caches/indexes. 3) Any advice on fcntl/flock on OS X, particularly? They both appear to work, but I'd prefer to use the fastest/least resource intensive options for everything if possible. Thanks! -deano

Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.0.0beta3 on a RHEL4 x86_64 server. But after putting this in production, it appears that when emails are retrieved, long ones always get truncated after a few kB, changing attachments into garbage :-( Has anyone seen this problem before? () The really weird part is that I've managed to get my dovecot.conf in a state where the problem no longer happens, but simply adding a line with '#', or removing trailing spaces (normally harmless) on some config lines makes the error re-appear. My quick guess would be that something is wrong with the config file parser on 64bit archs... Actually, I've just made some more tests, and it is "partially" reproducible on i386. [Dovecot] Per-user "Seen" flags with shared namespace stored as maildir?

Hi all, I was wondering if the above was possible. I know that the "seen" flag is stored in the filename, but was wondering if anyone knew of a way to separate it out? I know this would strictly-speaking break maildir compatibility, but it would be extremely useful for shared folders. I've been given the task of replacing the (extremely heavily used) shared folders functionality of our Exchange server and have almost everything working. I have authentication working against AD, shared folders, per-user subscriptions, "mail enabled folder" functionality and seem to have sorted all the other permissions issues I've been having. Apart from a nice easy-to-use front end for changing folder permissions this is the last thing I can think of that I need to look into before I can show this to my boss. Hi all, for one of my developpements, I need to be able to connect an IMAP server with a login but without password. (I use dovecot 1.0.beta3) For the userdb, I use "userdb static" : userdb static { args = uid=114 gid=114 home=/mydev/mail/%u } But I don't know how to allow IMAP connection by my application without password. I won't connect to a database, having a user/password file or something like this ... I think to use "passdb checkpassword" to call a fake authentication script .... Anyone have a better idea ? I tried Dovecot that it is better then Courier so much. But I have a problem with integration Dovecot to my system. I am using some extra flags in mails to mark them from others. For example I use a private flag "M" to understand it that this mail come from us as newsletter. I make some changes in code, but unfortunately I could'nt add this flag to Dovecot correctly. [Dovecot] Shared namespaces

Hi all, I'm trying to replace the "Public Folders" functionality in Exchange server. At first I thought it'd be something easily do-able with an IMAP server so I immediately thought of Dovecot. I setup what I though would work and things started to go a little screwy with subscription settings and the like. I started off by making a public maildir folder (in /home/public/Maildir) and setting the namespaces up in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf like this: namespace private { separator = / prefix = INBOX/ location = maildir:%h/Maildir inbox = yes } namespace public { separator = / prefix = Public/ location = maildir:/home/public/Maildir inbox = no hidden = no } The folder /home/public/Maildir has owner root:users and mode 770, and the file dovecot-shared in there has the same owner and mode 660. I logged with Thunderbird as user 1 and everything seems to work fine. However, when I logged in as user 2 I was getting all kinds of errors. On checking the permissions of /home/public/Maildir/subscriptions it was user1:user1 with mode 600. So then I thought "well, I'll change it to user1:users 660 and then everyone should be able to change it". I was very wrong. Whenever someone changed it, the ownership changed to userx:userx 600. Even when I tried setting the ownership to root:users and mode to 640, anyone could change it and set it to their own name (thus preventing anyone else from using it). To be perfectly honest, I'd ideally like to give people separate subscription settings anyway. I thought about symlinking the folders in, but that makes it a manual process to add new folders to everyone's maildirs. Can anyone please give me any pointers? Hi, dovecot tries to use OpenSSL's PRNG to generate random numbers if there is no /dev/urandom found. Unfortunately, it is flawed in its present form, since the PRNG is not seeded before RAND_bytes() is called in src/lib/randgen.c (on systems which have /dev/urandom, OpenSSL automatically seeds its PRNG from the urandom device). Here's a patch to address this issue: it tries to seed the PRNG if there is no /dev/urandom present (which is likely the case if dovecot uses OpenSSL's RAND API). [Dovecot] first crack at auto-trash plugin

I have written an alpha version of an auto trash plugin for dovecot. When compiled in any mail expunged from a non-Trash folder is moved to a folder named Trash. As of yet the folder is not created if it doesn't exist (the process fails before expunge). I would appreciate feedback of any sort. [Dovecot] Method of archiving mail?

Hello I have a situation in which a number of users have 10,000+ messages in the maildir, going back a few years. I'm not a fan of this many files lying around so I'd like to set up some kind of archiving, but one that will allow user's access to the old mails should they wish to see them. I thought of a cron job trying to sift through messages pulling those what were older than x days, then writing some script to process a request from a user (date/time/from/to/subject/body text) and copy matching messages to a "query" folder in the maildir. However, a) I'm not good at this kind of thing, and b) I have a feeling it's already been done before. Can anyone point me in the right direction please... is their software around to do this already? Many thanks, Steve :)

Hi guys, I've got a client running 1.0.beta3 on SuSe 9.3 Everything has been running perfectly since it was installed about 6 months ago, but lately they've had issues with email clients not being able to connect to the IMAP server, until they close their clients(Thunderbird & Outlook) and then re-open them. They have roughly 70 users on their network, so it sounds like it could be too many active sessions at once, but I've tried changing a few things in the config, and so far nothing has resolved this. Hi guys, I have a system whereby I am forced to deal with mbox files of /var/spool/mail/user1 (mbox text file) /var/spool/mail/user2 (mbox text file) etc Their mail homes are maildir format in: /home/user1/Maildir/{cur,new,tmp} /home/user2/Maildir/{cur,new,tmp} etc I can set things up so that the mbox inbox is shown using namespaces: namespace private { separator = / prefix = location = maildir:/home/virtual/%d/home/%n/Maildir/ } namespace private { separator = / prefix = mail/ inbox = yes hidden = no location = mbox:/home/virtual/%d/home/%n/mail/:INBOX=/home/virtual/%d/var/spool/mail/%n } This gives a rather odd folder structure as follows: INBOX Sent Drafts Trash mail/ --- INBOX myfolder1 myfolder2 Both of those INBOXes are actually the same folder. I'd ideally like to hide the mbox namespace entirely so that the user does not see any mbox folders. UW IMAP, with it's mbx format, allows you to just drop in a file called INBOX in mbx format and it will 'slurp' the /var/spool/mail/usersmbox file into the mbx INBOX. Has/could Dovecot have a similar feature whereby you specify a spool folder which is then 'slurped' into the local maildir INBOX? Not sure if I'm being clear enough here - do let me know if not! Anyway, it seems to have been working very well all the time. But recently three of my clients have claimed to have lost mail when moving from Thunderbird. I even experienced it myself once. I'm using Evolution 99% of the time, and have never seen any problems with that - but that doesn't mean the problem only occurs with Thunderbird. When moving mail from one folder to another, everything seems fine, except that the mail isn't in any folder anymore. It _seems_ related to this: Mar 14 14:46:53 buick dovecot: imap(larsmj): Fixed index file /home/larsmj/Maildir/.Junk/dovecot.index: first_recent_uid_lowwater 40 -> 36 Mar 14 14:46:53 buick dovecot: imap(larsmj): Corrupted index file /home/larsmj/Maildir/.Junk/dovecot.index: Duplicate header extension keywords But I'm not sure. Either way I get these lines rather often for some users. What does it mean? Anyone seen anything like it? I really don't like the idea of losing clients mail... Hi Steffen, I'm using procmail as my LDA and postfix as my MTA. Also, in my case I need all email to any email address at my domain starting with "pr" then some numbers to go into these folders. The reason for this is I'm trying to setup an open-source replacement for our mail-enabled Exchange Public Folders at the moment (can you believe you can't search sub-folders in Exchange Public Folders?!). First I created a fake user with it's own group: adduser public_folders Next, I added all the relevant users to that group: usermod -G public_folders john_smith usermod -G public_folders jon_doe Next, in /home/public_user/.procmailrc I put the following: MAILDIR=/home/public_folders/Maildir # If any mail gets through to this account without having a project number address, # put it in an "Unfiled" folder. DEFAULT=$MAILDIR/.Unfiled/new * # This line just gets me the project number (also makes sure the preceding letters * # are uppercase - otherwise we could end up with separate folders for pr123, Pr123, * # pR123 and PR123. * PROJECT_NUM=`formail -xTo: | egrep -o [pP][rR][0-9]+ | tr '[a-z]' '[A-Z]'` # This is not absolutely necessary, but I prefer to keep logs so I can see where # emails have been stored if anything goes missing. Now when someone sends an email to "pr123(a)mydomain.tld" it gets put into the relevant project folder under the "public _folders" maildir.
