I am having problems setting the default mail environment.# I am using Fedora Core 2 with version dovecot-0.99.10.5-0.FC2 My users all have an NFS mounted home directory, and all mail is delivered to ~Mail/.mailbox it is all mbox format. I would like to put the indexes on the local system in /var/indexes/{username}. So I set these parameters for default_mail_env : mbox:~/Mail/:INBOX=~/Mail/.mailbox Which produced the error : imap(test): stat() failed with mbox file ~/Mail/.mailbox: No such file or directory I set the mail environment back to default, linked inbox to .mailbox in the ~/Mail directory and all worked fine. Is there a better way to do this ? I would like to put the indexes on the local system in /var/indexes/{username}, so I decided to set: default_mail_env = INDEX=/var/indexes/%d/%n and got this error: imap(test): Failed to create storage with data: INDEX=/var/indexes//test dovecot: child 9142 (imap) returned error 89 I also tried : default_mail_env = INDEX=/var/indexes/%u And got the same error. I guessed at permissions, so I tried changing the ownership to dovecot and then test and then root and then 777, but I still get this error. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong? [Dovecot] imap idle on non-inbox?

Can this be done with dovecot? I really like the imap idle feature, but it doesn't work for me because I sort my mail into folders with procmail, so it only notifies me when one drops into inbox and not a subfolder. Is there just an option for this I'm missing, or does support for this not exist yet? Also, I don't think its a client issue as I watched the traffic with tcpdump and it only announced anything for inbox, messages dropping into other folders caused no traffic. -- Collin Grady BOFH excuse #347: The rubber band broke

Hello. I am currently testing dovecot (0.99.10.8, Debian woody from backports), with the maildir storage. I have noticed that when I use the mailutil tool from uw-imap distribution to transfer my IMAP mailboxes from our current server (uw-imap, mbx format) to the dovecot one, the mails arrival time are apparently lost. I can see this in Pine, using the Arrival sort: the mailboxes on the originating server and dovecot server are not ordered the same. If I use the mb2md perl script to transfer the same mailbox, I see the same behaviour. Is this normal ? Thanks. -- Nicolas

Hello, after I started to use dovecot as a backend for exim4 SMTP authentication on my main mailserver, I noticed that some clients don't advertise unicode support and so they can't log in. To fix the problem the attached patch allows use of OEM encoding in NTLM messages. Please consider applying. Best regards. P.S. HI, I recently upgraded an wu-imap server to dovecot dovecot-0.99.11-1.FC3.3 without big trouble (the subscribed mailboxes had to be added by hand...) But today users told me that there where some problems; e.g. a user tried to delete a message and got this error: Oct 19 09:43:13 mail imap(jmeinken): File isn't in mbox format: /home/mitarbeiter/jmeinken//Trash This didn't happen before; also after the migration. My questions: - Whats wrong? - Why is there the "//" a "more Trash" failed. After deleting this file and "touching" a new one, the user can delete files. The quota is 150 MB, the usere uses 100 MB at the moment. Any ideas? Hello, I am new to Dovecot and trying to setup on my Fedora Core 1 mail servers (actually migrating from uw to dovecot ;-) ). In my setup I use pam to authenticate virtual users. All the usernames include @domainname in their usernames like 'jane(a)somevhost.com'. Now path to user's home and INBOX includes /home/vhosts/<domainname>/home/<username>. I have added following to dovecot.conf. ------------------------ auth_passdb = pam auth_verbose = yes auth_username_chars = default_mail_env = mbox:/home/vhosts/%d/%h/:INBOX=/home/vhosts/%d/var/spool/mail/%n -------------------------- Now if I try to connect imap I get foll. error. -- imap(jane): May 19 01:58:08 Error: mkdir_parents(/home/vhosts///home/jane//.imap/INBOX) failed: Permission denied -- So %h and %u looks working but not %d :(. My pam module works right as if I use actual domain path in dovecot.conf everything works fine. Auth works correctly with uw. Any pointers ? TIA, Pythonic

Code which supports cyrus SASL library (src/auth/mech-cyrus-sasl2.c) is broken. Following is the workaround patch for Dovecot Rel 0.99.11, and it worked fine on FreeBSD 4.10 BOX. It will not work with current development version. Application for that version might not be so difficult. Recently I found the CVS log which appeals that cyrus SASL support is discontinued. Hi, I installed dovecot from dovecot-1.0-test51 with this configure line: ./configure --with-mysql --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --with-ssldir=/etc/ssl --with-ssl=openssl When I add this to my dovecot.conf: passdb = mysql /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf I get this in /var/log/maillog when I run "dovecot -c /etc/dovecot.conf": Oct 21 13:59:16 one dovecot: Dovecot v1.0-test51 starting up Oct 21 13:59:17 one dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down Oct 21 13:59:17 one dovecot: auth(default): Unknown userdb type 'mysql' Oct 21 13:59:17 one dovecot: child 13203 (auth) returned error 89 After my ./configure was complete it was also noted that mysql would be built into dovecot as passwd and userdb, so MySQL should be in there. [Dovecot] Problems with thunderbird

I'm running dovecot-1.0-test50 on openbsd 3.4 and it's working great, exept with thunderbird. Everything works fine with squirrelmail. The instant i log in with thunderbird the imap process goes up to 100% cpu, and instantly goes back down to 0 when i log out. I configured dovecot with the following arguments: --with-vpopmail --with-storages=maildir --without-passwd --without-passwd-file --without-static --without-pop3d --with-mysql --disable-ipv6 --with-ssl=openssl --without-checkpassword --without-bsdauth --without-static-userdb I'm usig the sql as auth, with vpopmail. I've also tried 1.0-test19, test46, 47, 48 and 49. Going to try 0.9.11 now, but in the 0.9-series i've had huge problems with indexes becoming fucked up every couple of hours. [Dovecot] procmail, mutt, and Mac OS X

Hi, I'm using procmail to deliver my mail to my maildir boxes, that are watched by dovecot, and I configured mutt to use imap to access these boxes. After installing a more recent procmail (the default one from Apple has a bug with "/" in the filenames, so I used the one from Fink), I sent myself a message, which was delivered correctly to Maildir/.INBOK/new (I can see the file there). However, I cannot see this file from mutt. I think it is dovecot that is not seeing it, as I tried quitting and restarting mutt. So my question is: how can I tell dovecot that it should check the mailboxes, and is there a way to make it do so regularly? Or is my problem from somewhere else? Hi, I'm trying to install dovecot on Mac OS X, and I'm having trouble to make it run. If someone could point me to what I'm doing wrong or suggest some documentation to read, I'd be very glad (I've search the wiki for Mac OS X specific documentation, but could not find any). I installed dovecot using darwinports. The version installed is 0.99.10.5. (It's running well enough to tell me that when I do a: sudo /opt/local/sbin/dovecot --version ;-) Before trying to tweak the configuration file, I wanted first to get dovecot to run. When I first launched it, it told me that there was no dovecot user. [Dovecot] Subscription problem with various clients

Hi, I'm a newbie with dovecot but i managed to install it and it's running great except i have this weird problem when trying to subscribe folders. I can subscribe to one folder at the time (for example inbox + sent), but if i try to subscribe an other directory client (tried with outlook express 6, Mozilla Thunderbird 0.8, Iloha Webmail) automaticly unsubscribes other directories. I've tried to search a solution for this problem without success. Please help. I'm using Dovecot 0.99.10.2 on FreeBSD 5.0

[Dovecot] test49 "killed with signal 6" errors...

I upgraded yesterday from 1.0test46 to 1.0test49 in an attempt to eliminate an error that a couple of my users were getting. Both users were using Thunderbird 0.6 over imaps, and were getting errors that said: "The current command didn't succeed. The mail server responded: Error in IMAP command UID: Invalid Body [..] Parameter: Missing '>'in'<14336-13057>'. When the user would click the Okay button on the e-mail client error message, the message would be delivered as normal. There wasn't any entry in the system logs about this that I could find. Googling didn't turn up anything concrete. I decided to upgrade to the latest test49 version. Dovecot is built with the following configuration: ./configure --sysconfdir=/etc \ --with-ssl=openssl \ --with-pam=NO \ --with-ldap=no \ --with-vpopmail=no \ --with-rawlog I added the --with-rawlog switch yesterday and created a dovecot.rawlog folder in the Maildirs but nothing seems to be logged. sorry if this mail is a duplicate - I am testing the new mail system! I am having problems setting the default mail environment.# I am using Fedora Core 2 with version dovecot-0.99.10.5-0.FC2 My users all have an NFS mounted home directory, and all mail is delivered to ~Mail/.mailbox it is all mbox format. I would like to put the indexes on the local system in /var/indexes/{username}. So I set these parameters for default_mail_env : mbox:~/Mail/:INBOX=~/Mail/.mailbox Which produced the error : imap(test): stat() failed with mbox file ~/Mail/.mailbox: No such file or directory I set the mail environment back to default, linked inbox to .mailbox in the ~/Mail directory and all worked fine. Is there a better way to do this ? I would like to put the indexes on the local system in /var/indexes/{username}, so I decided to set: default_mail_env = INDEX=/var/indexes/%d/%n and got this error: imap(test): Failed to create storage with data: INDEX=/var/indexes//test dovecot: child 9142 (imap) returned error 89 I also tried : default_mail_env = INDEX=/var/indexes/%u And got the same error. I guessed at permissions, so I tried changing the ownership to dovecot and then test and then root and then 777, but I still get this error. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong? [Dovecot] Occasional error msgs from 1.0-test49

I'm running 1.0-test49 on Solaris 2.8. MUA is Thunderbird (or mutt) running on FreeBSD. I'm using Maildir boxes. Occasionally, when browsing new mail in INBOX, I get an error back from the imapd, displayed in Thunderbird as the following popup msg: The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Error in IMAP command UID: Invalid BODY[..] parameter: Missing '>' in '<36864,-34800>'. >From this point, nothing much works reliably until I quit the MUA and start again. Sometimes, if I keep working, the email that was being fetched is shown but is corrupted and the msg body contains another copy of the whole email (header & body), sometimes 2 extra copies. Nothing is in the maillog. This _didn't_ happen with 0.99.

[Dovecot] Index corruption

I'm getting pretty constant index corruption on (admittedly large) Maildir folders. I'm running Thunderbird 0.7.3 and Mutt as my IMAP clients (on FreeBSD). Server is Dovecot 0.99.10.9 configured thusly: ./configure --disable-ipv6 CC=gcc-3.3 CXX=g++-3.3 --prefix=/opt/dovecot --without-pop3d on a Solaris 2.8 box. Maildirs are NFS-mounted, but the index files are on local UFS filesystem: default_mail_env = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/export/01/imapd/%u MTA is Postfix, LDA is procmail delivering to several Maildir folders. There will be 2 (or more) dovecot instances running for this user (me) - several from Thunderbird and one from the BIFF client (icewm). Turning off the BIFF client doesn't seem to help. Symptoms: when using Thunderbird, and deleting a msg or moving it to another folder, Thunderbird will sometimes not display the next unread message, but just sit there. Changing folders works, but changing back to the previous folder (or quitting/restarting Thunderbird) only shows the first N messages (N is about 500, in a Maildir of about 6000, and it is the SAME email that is "last" every time.) This happens with multiple folders, but (usually) only folders that are delivered to by procmail (this may be related to the problem or a coincidence in that only those folders have unread email!) Accessing the mailboxes using MUTT via IMAP shows the same truncated message list. (I'm the only user using dovecot as I want Maildir, the other users have uw-imap, so dovecot is listening on port 4343) Closing all imap clients, then removing the .index.* files from the appropriate /export/01/imapd/ directory, then restarting the imap client causes the missing messages to reappear (after a suitable wait for the index files to be recreated). It really looks like locking or truncation issues in the index files.... Any clues? Debugging hints? This is happening several times per day so I can get lots o' debug data! Greg.

I noticed a problem with handling UIDL msgnumber in test46. If you do "UIDL 1" on a POP3 connection it returns the UID of the message followed by a dot and an error message. I made 2 changes: I added the following line to line 527 of src/pop3/commands.c ctx->message = message; I changed line 559 from: if (list_uids_iter(client, ctx)) to: if (!list_uids_iter(client, ctx)) Next time I'll submit an actual diff, I've made lots of other changes and comments in my source though so it's harder. - Mike

Created lib-sql API with asynchronous PostgreSQL and synchronous MySQL implementations. Also means I dropped mysql and pgsql userdb and passdb and replaced them with one generic sql userdb and passdb. If you were using the old ones, you'll have to fix your configuration. See included doc/dovecot-sql.conf for more information. Note that the password_query must now return "password" named column, before it was assumed that the first returned column was password.

I also thought maybe Postfix could be made to talk that (or similiar) protocol as well, but no-one has answered my mail about it so far. Perhaps I should just write binary compatible libsasl2 which actually talks to dovecot-auth. - other authentication code cleanups - don't insert extra spaces at the beginning of FETCH replies (I guess most clients ignored them) - mbox fixes - some index fixes - Hopefully fixes _send_istream() assert crash with FreeBSD (sendfile() was used wrong) The authentication code changes haven't been tested too much. I only tried that PLAIN authentication works. Others might not.

Although I set `auth_debug = yes' in the dovecot.conf, the line about my uid being too low was never logged by the server. Neither KMail nor Mozilla showed me the rejection message, that dovecot was giving them. I had to ktrace the process to see it and adjust first_valid_uid down. Yours, -mi

I have several mail accounts, but collect all spam e-mail in the spam mailbox on one of them. After switching to dovecot (from imap-uw) I notice a very slow speed of bulk transfers and a very high CPU utilization by the dovecot's imap process during it -- sustained 62% of my server's Pentium2 @266MHz. Never saw such effects under imap-uw... My client is KMail (despite the awfull quality of its latest release). Hope, this helps. Yours, -mi

I'm getting this error on a particular message in my Maildir: Oct 11 21:59:48 aurora dovecot: IMAP(doug): file ostream-file.c: line 646 (_send_istream): assertion failed: (instream->v_offset <= in_size) To me, more import than the question "why is this happening" is "how can I debug this?" Attaching gdb to the running imap process doesn't give me access to the proper function names to set up breakpoints and get a stack trace. Can someone with the experience give a quick how-to on debugging functions deep in dovecot? Thanks, Doug

Hi, Can anyone tell me what the 'client_workarounds = outlook-idle' directive exactly does? I have enabled it in my /etc/dovecot.conf, but the problem that I think it should solve still exsits. That is that after being IDLE for more than half an hour Dovecot will disconnect Outlook but Outlook never connects back. Therefore users receive new mail, but they don't get notified unless they press send/receive. So what does the workaround do? And how can I solve the problem? Thanks! Jonathan

I've been browsing the wiki and thru my mail-list archives but haven't found an answer. does/can dovecot 0.99.x support authenticating with a SASL database? I'll be setting up a new mail server for my offices using Sendmail/MIMEDefang/ClamAV/etc with dovecot as the IMAP server. I'm not familiar at all with LDAP. I know that sendmail will authenticate to a SASL database and it's fairly easy to setup. My goal is that I can support "real" users (actual user accounts) but allow their mail passwords to be different than their login passwords, and changeable via some sort of CGI interface. (I also have 2 weeks to accomplish this) any assistance is appreciated alan

Ok, I am playing around with dovecot and things are running relatively smoothly. I am using Outlook as that is what the client uses for Email. I can copy messages to and from the IMAP folder. I can create folders from the root directory fine. My question is this. I have folders like this: IMAPServer --Inbox --Trash --WorkToDo Now when I try and create a subfolder in "WordToDo" I get an error message "Unable to create the folder. The server responded: 'Mailbox doesn't allow inferior mailboxes' When I try to create a subfolder in "Inbox" I get an error message "Unable to create the folder. The folder 'Inbox' cannot contains subfolders..." So is this a limitation of Dovecot? Another problem with Outlook? Or do I have some configuration problem on my end? Not yet. But I guess I should one day add support for it. Most SASL mechanisms support it directly without a kludgy username. I'm not sure about the configuration though. For passwd-file I guess there could be just one global flag which means that the user has access to everyone's mails. For LDAP and SQL I guess the pass_filter/password_query could have a few new %vars to describe the other user. Or maybe there needs to be a separate filter/query for that case. Hmm. Do you want the poweruser to have access to all mailboxes, or just for the one domain? What passdb are you using?

It occurs to me that, perhaps, the way to do this would be to look at the mtime on one of the dovecot-maintained files, like 'dovecot-uidlist'. In the clients issues section of dovecot.org is says "You should enable outlook-idle workaround" Ok, maybe I am missing something very obvious here but I can not find any documentation on how to implement the outlook-idle workaround. At least more stable than test46 which crashed quite often when expunging. - pretty much rewrote "index extension" support. it's now possible to add extensions to headers and to message records. it's possible to resize them. I'll probably use it soon to change mbox code to use 32bit offsets and automatically grow to 64bit offsets once mbox grows over 4GB (well, yes, rare, but.. :) - login_greeting and login_greeting_capability settings - auth_verbose is even more verbose - mbox fixes/optimizations - other fixes/additions

[Dovecot] dovecot and (no) new incomming mail - migration from wu-imapd

Hi, I recently installed dovecot 0.99 on a fedora core 1 Server which used the wu-imap-server. dovecot starts and I can subscribe to my old imapfolders, but if I send mails to my account, this new mail arent downloaded. If I quit Mozilla and restart Mozilla, the recently send mails are in my inbox. We use also a webmailsystem, so I could verify that the mails are in the inbox without relogging in. This phenome is not showing up by all my imap accounts. I'm testing with mozilla 1.7.3 and 1.8a4 on a mac os x 10.3.5 Client. The Inbox-folder for the "defect" account is showing in italic and grey ghosted (in the folder list), the folder in the working account is normal. A user using Netscape 7.1 on a Windows XP Client has also no Problems.... I upgraded my server from Mandrake 9.2 (Imapd , postfix & SQ mail) to Fedora core 2 (dovecot, postfix & SQ mail) i backed up /etc/passwd , /etc/shadow files & all home directories of users account on my server .. after resotration & configuration of the servers everything seems to work , except users email they had on the server saved :( man this is embaracing .. can u tell me wat i did wrong ? where were the mails stored .. & wat is the right way to do it ? thanks

[Dovecot] Spaces removed from subjects in FETCH response

I'm using SpamAssassin to tag spam and prefix the spam score to the subject line. To make the scores sort properly in the client's message list, I pad the score with spaces to right-align it. It looks like dovecot-0.99.10.9-1.FC3.2 is frustrating this by stripping the excess spaces from the subject before reporting it in FETCH responses. Here's an actual subject line: Subject: (SPAM? 6.9) Urgent Response !! Note the multiple spaces before the "6.9". Hi, It seems that on larger folders (32k emails) searching fails with the following error under squirrelmail 1.4.3a. (The server continues to work, as the hard drive stays on for a bit after the error is displayed) --- Search Results ERROR: ERROR : Connection dropped by imap-server. Query: SEARCH CHARSET ISO-8859-1 ALL SUBJECT {9} 5.3-BETA7 SUBJECT {9} available --- Oddly enough, when searching for just '5.3-BETA7' instead of '5.3-BETA7 available' the search completes OK. I can search with multiple strings on smaller (3k) folders however. Thanks.

Hi, I'm a new list member, I’m a not an English native speaking (so, please forgive any error you can find in this mail) and I'm trying to install Dovecot in Debian Woody. I've installed the Dovecot package from backports and I’m trying to configure it to get the credential authentication from an LDAP backend. This is the configuration process summary I’ve done; if you need some configuration file I can post it with great pleasure. In LDAP I’ve created the user cn=dovecot,ou=DSA,dc=flanet,dc=org, I’ve configured this user to have read access to the userPassword field in slapd.conf (the other parameter such as uid, directoryHome… can be read as anonymous), I’ve configured the dovecot-ldap.conf to bind using the “cn=dovecot,ou=DSA,dc=flanet,dc=org” and I set the *auth_userdb* and *auth_passdb* of dovecot.conf to *ldap /path/to/dovecot-ldap.conf*. [Dovecot] timeout when retrieving folder list w/ Evolution 2.0?

hi, i have a problem with some maildir folders, where Evolution times out when retrieving the header list. It only happens with one particular folder, but i can't seem to find a pattern behind it. The amount of headers it does manage to retrieve varies, from between 3% to 50%. Its not a particularly large folder either (only 520 messages). The error message I get from Evolution is "Server response ended too soon". I did an Ethereal trace, and the closest IMAP command before the failure is: FLAGS (\Answered \Seen) RFC822.SIZE xxx INTERNALDATE "xxx" UID nnn)\r\n its a different UID value that fails each time though. after this response from the server, it seems to get through the message header (not sure if the entire message header was sent back). i'll keep this folder around as a test case. any ideas on where to start debugging? i'm fairly familiar with C and gdb. leon

Hello, I am new to the list and after searching the net for a solution to this problem, I have yet to find it. Maybe someone here can help. I had been using Dovecot that came with FC2 for about 1200 POP3 and IMAP mail accounts. At random times (1-5 days) an imap process would run the cpu usage up to 99% on one of my cpus (Running SMP P3-866) and hang. That process was unkillable and only a reboot would fix the problem. If I let it go, eventually it would lock up the server completely. [Dovecot] Dovecot/IMP Bug with RFC822.SIZE and BODYSTRUCTURE

Ok, I have narrowed my IMP/Dovecot attachment problem down to what I think is a bug in Dovecot. The test that follow are performed on 0.99.11. When you download an attachment in IMP it uses the php function imap_fetchbody() which contacts the IMAP server and retrieves just the mime chunk you are looking for. It does this by first fetching some information about the email, and then grabs the specific chunk you are looking for in a second request. The first request looks like this. "FETCH 258 (ENVELOPE BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (Path Message-ID Newsgroups Followup-To References)] BODYSTRUCTURE INTERNALDATE RFC822.SIZE FLAGS)" Dovecot responds properly on all parts of this request except for the BODYSTRUCTURE portion which gets returned as this. "BODYSTRUCTURE ("text" "plain" NIL NIL NIL "7bit" 0 0 NIL NIL NIL)" This causes the imap_fetchbody() funtion to freak out and not do the 2nd request, and it returns 0 bytes. If I manually try "FETCH 258 (BODYSTRUCTURE)" Dovecot returns the expected data properly. I figured there must be an interaction between the BODYSTRUCTURE fetch and one of the other items that are requested, so I tried them all and narrowed it down to this. FETCH 258 (BODYSTRUCTURE) <- works OK FETCH 258 (BODYSTRUCTURE RFC822.SIZE) <- BODYSTRUCTURE reply is wrong. I have been surfing through the dovecot source looking for a way to fix or work around this, but I am only a mediocre C coder. Can anyone enlighten me? Ryan Hulsker

Hi all! I have setup dovecot (RPM) on a Fedora Core 2 machine using LDAP for authentication. It all seems to work pretty well, except for simultaneous logins. I am using mbox files to store the mail as follows (from /etc/dovecot.conf): default_mail_env = mbox:~/.mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:INDEX=MEMORY So the INBOX file is stored in /var/mail, other mailfolders are stored in the users home directory in the .mail folder. Because the /home directory of this machine is mounted from fileserver through NFS, I have set the INDEX=MEMORY options (see http://www.dovecot.org/doc/nfs.txt) As said before I am getting some problems when using simultaneous logins for the same mail account (for instance when multiple users that work on a specific project want to share a mail account containing all the mail about the project in addition to their private account). The client used is Microsoft Outlook and besides some outlook specific problems, it also gives these errors (translated from Dutch) when many users are simultaneously logged in to the same account: 'Your server reported that a UID does not comply with the IMAP standard, which signifies an error on the server.' 'The UID of a message is unexpectedly deleted. This signifies an error on the server.' I am not sure where to look... I assume a problem with the index files? Does NFS cause the problem? Will this be fixed if I switch to maildirs? I would be grateful for any tips on the subject! I can help you narrow the problem down a bit. I'm assuming you're using 1.0-test45 or 46, in which case I see the same problem using mbox, index files stored on disk and no NFS. I access my mail via pine and chatter email (an imap client for the palm). While I've not seen any errors that specifically say UID, the client for the palm will occasionally reload messages from a few days back thinking they're new, which eventually crashes the client when the count of mail it should be loading doesn't match what it actually got (the palm client's in beta, too :) ). I solved the problem by moving back to the 0.99 series, which other than performance issues works just fine for me. - Michael ------------------- In response to: Hi all! [Dovecot] Slow squirrelmail login/IMAP CPU 80%

I've been having a problem with Dovecot on Fedora Core 2 with SquirrelMail on the same system. When ever I login through SquirrelMail the imap process consumes around 80% of my CPU and the login takes forever (about 10 minutes). 1 Once I do manage to login, everything is fine and can even log out and back in without issue. hi, i'd like to seperate the password file for seperate virtual domains into seperate files. i tried specifying: passdb = passwd-file /etc/exim_incoming/local/accounts/pwdb/%d but i get an error message that it couldn't open the particular file, and then Dovecot shuts down. is there a way to do lazy-lookups? or, would i be required to write a little helper program and have Dovecot connect to its socket to do auth? leon

[Dovecot] evolution and received by header

Evolution has a nice feature where it can sort messages by the most recent received-by date, instead of the Date: header. This is nice, because then if something gets stuck on a server somewhere in the world for a couple of days, it shows up at the end of your mail list, instead of way back where you might miss it. However, when using dovecot with evo, if I sort of received by instead of date, it takes forever. I assume this is because date is indexed, and received by is not. So the natural question becomes, is there a way of getting dovecot to index received by? TIA.

Have been using dovecot since FC1 test-something, and latest working was couple of updates after FC3t2 (2.91 + devel updates). Tried downgrading with no luck, and can't figure out what's wrong. Setup is very standard Fedora, all defaults I guess, using postfix and Maildirs, and dovecot for imap access. What happens is when logging in and authenticated ok, the connection is dropped. To illustrate I've connected directly and showing the (verbose) output: (commands) [xxx@xxxxxxx ~]$ telnet localhost imap Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. So problem is for all accounts, both new, old and empty. Would be guessing some sort of permissions problem but should be running mostly as root in default mode? And the dovecot user seems to be ok and working, directory permissions are corrected at startup if it's wrong, and so on... I'm not an expert, might be something trivial, but cannot figure it out by myself or Google so mailinglists are next. Let me know if I should send some more information about the system. [Dovecot] Dovecot/IMP attachment problem

I recently installed dovecot in my production environment. This comprises about 60k mailboxes. The system was initially set up with dovecot 0.99.10.7 using maildirs. I have been using perdition to handle redirection during the process of converting from wu-imap. Last week it was brought to my attention that our webmail interface (horde/imp) is no longer allowing people to download attachments. Everything appears to work fine, however the downloaded files are 0 bytes in size. I built a test box with the latest horde/imp/php combination and that failed to solve the problem. Today I upgraded dovecot on one of our mail servers to 0.99.11 and that seems to have had no effect. I was hoping that the BODY and BODYSTRUCTURE changes from 99.10.8 would have fixed this. I am wondering if anyone has encountered these problems? Is this a dovecot bug? Due to the fact that I am still in transition mode using perdition I am in the unique position where I can basically hit two identical mailboxes, one in wu-imap and the other in dovecot just by using a different username. I have done this, and have ethereal traces if anyone is interested in helping me out with this. Ryan Hulsker

Hello, I'm having treuble setting up a ssl dovecot; here's some info: /etc/xinetd.d/pop3s: service pop3s { disable = no flags = REUSE socket_type = stream wait = no user = root group = root instances = UNLIMITED server = /usr/libexec/dovecot/pop3-login log_type = SYSLOG daemon info } I've setup the certificates, ssl_disable = no, protocols = imap pop3 pop3s ,but if I telnet on my server's port 995, I get the dovecot banner in clear-text. I'mt trying to make Dovecot run on Cygwin. I managed to make it compile and register as a service on Windows XP. I had a problem with setrlimit, but I disabled the process size limitation in the config file. Now, when I start the process, either by clicking the start button on the MS Managemente Console or by cygrunsrv -S dovecot, i get to error dialogs saying that the program needs cygcrypt-0.dll and cygwin1.dll. I have both of those libraries on the system but the program doesn't seem to see them. Do any of you have a clue about this? Hello list, I am running Dovecot 1.0-test46 on FreeBSD with PostgreSQL as backend, runs _very_ nice, but i can not set "default_pass_scheme = CRYPT" (only PLAIN) for PostgreSQL Auth in dovecot-pgsql.conf. I have a valid entry in pg_hba.conf (and reloaded/restarted): "local mail mail crypt" If i replace crypt in pg_hba.conf with md5 it works also with plain in dovecot-pgsql.conf? -- Christian. PS: sorry for my poore english.

[Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0-test45 indexing issues

We're currently on dovecot 0.99.10 with a few modifications (including one very nasty hack for the blank line at the beginning of the mailbox bug). We're using mbox all around. Everything works smoothly but we still ocasionally get corrupt mailboxes and indexes that need to be wiped out. I setup 1.0-test45 on one of our mailservers to start testing it and ran into a few issues. The first one is if I try to use mail_read_mmaped=yes I get this error: Error: POP3(sobo1): file istream-raw-mbox.c: line 410 (istream_raw_mbox_get_body_size): assertion failed: (rstream->mail_size != (uoff_t)-1) for every mailbox. If I switch to mail_read_mmaped=no everything works, but performance is extremely bad. I have a few test mailboxes with about 20k messages and if I toggle a message flag from unread to read, dovecot seems to re-read the entire mailbox up to that message (I saw this with strace). Is this how supposed to work?? I don't see behavior like this on 0.99.10, and on a mailbox with any substantial number of messages it really slows things down. Thanks for any input. - Mike

Restarting Dovecot doesn't kill the existing processes which are still using the old directories and since they're gone they begin complaining. Correct way to do moving would be: kill dovecot killall imap move directories start dovecot

Hi all, This is probably a silly question, but I have a problem. I've had to move my users maildirs from: maildir:/home/%u/.Maildir To maildir:/data/mail/%u I've updated the MTA to put mail to the correct place and it's working fine. I've also changed the dovecot.conf file and restarted dovecot and I thought that would be all I needed to do. However, the users are getting lots of error messages, and looking in the relevant logs shows lots of entries like: Sep 28 14:03:36 <hostname> imap(<user1>): stat() failed with file /home/<user1>/.Maildir/new: No such file or directory Sep 28 14:03:36 <hostname> imap(<user2>): utime() failed with index file /home/<user2>/.Maildir/.INBOX/.imap.index: No such file or directory (Sorry for changing usernames and hostname, but I'm neurotic about that kind of thing) What have I missed? Or am I not supposed to move maildirs once they're in use? Hi all, I have a temporary fix in case anyone is reading the archives with the same problem. Link the old location to the new location. E.g: mv /home/user/.Maildir /data/mail/user ln -s /data/mail/user /home/user/.Maildir Still no idea why dovecot is still looking in the original folders though. [Dovecot] Thunderbird 0.8 - Inbox grayed out and does not update

Hi all, I cannot get Thunderbird 0.8 to work with my dovecot IMAP server. It works fine with my work IMAP account - I'm not sure what they are using. What happens is that folders that I create in Thunderbird or Evolution can only contain subfolders or messages, not a combination of both. Folders which contain subfolders and not messages show up in Thunderbird grayed out. I can expand them and view the subfolders and the messages within those. The Inbox however, also shows up grayed out. When I look inside I can see the messages that were there when I created the IMAP account in Thunderbird, however, no new messages arrive, even after restarting Thunderbird. If I connect with Evolution 1.4 I can read the inbox without a problem. Has anyone seen this? warm regards, Joshua

[Dovecot] problems with cvs version and vpopmail

Hi, I have tried compiling the latest cvs version of dovecot on my FreeBSD 5.2.1-release box with the ports version of vpopmail: 5.4.3_1. In the configuration file I have two auth paragraphs, one for passwd authentication and one for vpopmail-auth: auth vpopmail { mechanisms = plain userdb = vpopmail passdb = vpopmail user = vpopmail } But the vpopmail dosn'nt work. I got the folowing in the log: Info: auth(vpopmail): vpopmail(stoffer(a)test.ek.dk): unknown user (stoffer(a)test.ek.dk) When I ktrace the dovecot process, it seams that it is trying to access the mysql db, but it ignores the settings in ~vpopmail/etc/vpopmail.mysql If I use the ports version of dovecot it works, but of course without the multiple auth capability since it is version 0.99... Greetings- Is there any way to increase the logging output of dovecot ? I've set auth_verbose and auth_debug = yes The only output is a single line to syslog mail.info: Sep 23 09:01:54 server dovecot: pop3-login: Login: me [ip.is.here.00] test45 doesn't appear to have the --rawlog configuration option There is nothing written to ~/dovecot.rawlog Tried setting ~/dovecot.rawlog mode to 777 Running FreeBSD-5.3 and dovecot-1.0-test45 dovecot is using passwd auth and pop3s for test purposes and appears to be working correctly otherwise The reason I think I need this is that I don't feel comfortable putting this into production as it is a 'black box' at this point, without a little more testing.. This makes Dovecot do writes to mbox only with EXPUNGE and CHECK commands and when mailbox is being closed. This is the same behaviour as with UW-IMAP. Especially useful for POP3 where most users just download the mails and delete everything - with this enabled Dovecot doesn't anymore go writing X-UID headers and whatever. Be careful anyway with this release, it seems to be working with me but mbox can get corrupted from simple mistakes. Other important fixes include: - handle UIDVALIDITY changes in mbox correctly - we might have overridden others dotlock files if they were being rapidly recreated with different processes - should fix syncing read-only mboxes (maybe dovecot.org finally stops giving internal errors :) - fixed several other mbox syncing issues which were quite rare without lazy writing - when sending lots of non-mail data to IMAP clients, Dovecot might have lost some of it causing weird problems. With pop3 it crashed with assert instead of losing data.

[Dovecot] Questions about mail process chroots

Greetings, I am configuring a new Dovecot installation, and the way the valid_chroot_dirs and mail_chroot variables affect the mail processes are a bit unclear to me. I was wondering if anyone could provide me with more specific details than the comments in the configuration file do, or maybe even recommend some values given my configuration. We have a Debian GNU/Linux system and a mix of users with shell accounts and users with disabled logins. Both these groups should be handled the same way by Dovecot: auth_userdb is passwd and auth_passdb is pam. The dovecot PAM service will use pam_mysql.so, if that matters. Mail is in mbox format (we have too many sticklers who are set in their ways, unfortunately); I'm thinking default_mail_env should be mbox:~/Mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u. So, if I understand correctly, (a) I should set chroots on the mail processes, since some of our users don't have real shell accounts, and (b) those processes will need access to /var/mail and home directories under /home. So my best guess is that I should set the chroot variables like this: valid_chroot_dirs = /var/mail:/home mail_chroot = /var/mail I'm not sure about this though, for a number of reasons. Do I need to even chroot at all, or do I misunderstand the comments? If I do need to chroot, the comments about valid_chroot_dirs warn very strongly that the chroot dirs should not be writeable by users. /home itself isn't writeable by users, but obviously their home directories are. Is listing /home also vulnerable to exploits? If it is, what would a good solution be? What's the meaning of /./ in mail_chroot? The comments about it, unfortunately, make no sense at all to me. It says that /home/./user is the same as /home, but if that's completely true, why wouldn't I just say mail_chroot = /home? I even looked into the source and it still wasn't really clear to me. I have just moved our corporate e-mail over to qmail/dovecot and am very happy with the performance. However, I have had two reports of messages going missing which may or may not be directly related to Dovecot. I was able to observe this in action this morning: 1) I got the user out of their e-mail client (Mozilla 1.7.2) and forced an email to be delivered. It showed up in Maildir/new. 2) I had the user log in using our webmail (Squirrelmail) and the message was visible to the client (and correctly moved to Maildir/cur). 3) The user then logged in using the Mozilla mail client and not only was the message not visible in the client, it was no longer on the disk! 4) This was completely repeatable, even if I deleted the .INBOX/index files and forced dovecot to rebuild. For the moment I am thinking this is a client problem, but I thought I'd mention it just in case it rang a bell with someone. I wound up installing 0.99.11 just for grins (I just moved these people to the new server and don't want to risk 1.00-test yet). I'm also going to look at whatever debugging messages are available in dovecot; it would be useful to see a log of all imap transactions, not just login, so I could confirm that it is the client process requesting that the files be deleted and not somethink with dovecot itself (or some hardware failure). For some reason I could never reproduce this problem with Linux or Solaris, but with OpenBSD it happened immediately. Stupid problem with marking output buffer empty if it was full and write() returned EAGAIN. Other changes include: - LDAP initialization crashed - fixed some compiler warnings and some issues with 64bit systems - fixed some memory leaks What bugs are there left?

For those of you using Dovecot on Fedora, the noisy syslog is fixed: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=124979 I'd suggest getting the pam SRPM from Rawhide (Fedora development tree) and rebuilding, to minimize dependency issues. (I haven't tried this yet. I'm just forwarding the bug-closing report.)

hello, I know this is a question that has probably been answered before but I have searched for the answer and am yet to find it. I am running dovecot under fedora core 2 and cannot figure out where I set it so that users can create nested folders. At the moment they can only create one subfolder in most mail clients. however if using squirrelmail they can create nested folders but the folder whicch hosts the subfolders cannot contain mail messages as well as folders. Hi I was trying to build test40 (and then test42, since it came out in the mean time) on my fresh Solaris 9 box at home, and ran into a few snags. First problem was during the build. Make spat the dummy in the auth directory: Making all in auth make: Fatal error in reader: Makefile, line 701: Unexpected end of line seen Current working directory /home/pkg/dovecot-1.0-test42/src/auth So, I went and checked it out, to find what certainly looked to me like an error: 697:distclean-generic clean-generic maintainer-clean-generic clean \ 698:mostlyclean distclean maintainer-clean 699: 700: checkpassword-reply.c 701: 702:# Tell versions [3.59,3.63) of GNU make to not export all variables. Originally, I tried tacking that onto the end of the preceding list, but when the next problem came about, I tried commenting it out... with no joy. The next problem was in starting it. I've configured Dovecot before, and it runs great, keeping all the users at my work happy and supplied with spa... erm... e-mail. I also have an older test version installed on an old SparcStation 5 at home. But when I try to start it, it complains of not being able to drop root group privileges. I googled about for a bit, and found mention of ensuring the minimum GID level was set right... but still no joy. I'm at a loss. Any suggestions? [Dovecot] Trying to install Test43 with rpmbuild

Hi! I'm using WhiteBox Enterprise Linux 3.0, which is a re-compile distro of RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0. I'm installing a new mail server and would like to use dovecot as it supports Maildir, which the default imapd does not. I've downloaded test43's tarball, and would prefer to use RPM to manage it. To that end, I've tried to do an rpmbuild, but get an error: [root@www src]# rpmbuild -ta dovecot-1.0-test43.tar.gz error: line 7: Illegal char '-' in version: Version: 1.0-test43 I tried untaring the tarball and looking at the dovecot.spec file, and sure enough on line 7 is a reference to "Version: 1.0-test43". The problem is that if I take out the '-', and try rpmbuild, I get more errors. I'm not an expert in this stuff...has anybody else managed to get this working? It would sure make my life easier (I think). Ben

Nothing special in the logs... [Dovecot] Weird behaviour with multiple accounts pointing to same maildir

I'm finding this a little strange. I'm putting together a mail server that will (someday, hopefully) serve a lot of email addresses for a lot of domains. To make life easy, each account name is the full mail name ... i.e "joe(a)domain.com" instead of just "joe" Mail is stored in Maildirs, and the user account information is all in MySQL. Delivery is handled by Postfix. Everything seems nice and clean, except ... If I create multiple accounts that all use the same Maildir for delivery (i.e. joe_smith(a)domain.com, js(a)domain.com, js(a)otherdomain.com) it seems to work well. Except that the user can _only_ log in as the first record in the database via IMAP. (i.e. in the example above, the user could log in as joe_smith(a)domain.com, but not the others) Logging in as the others does not produce any erros (that I can find, anyway) but the user can't see his/her mail. I'm rather stumped as to why this is happening. Each record in the database that points to a particular Maildir is identical except for the userid. In the example above, logging in as the 2nd or 3rd account shows folders created, but not the mail in them. Hello. I am trying to install Dovecot 0.99.10.9 on a FreeBSD 4.10 system from the ports collection (latest via cvsup). When running make, I get the message: dovecot-0.99.10.9 Currently incompatible with security/gnutls This is in contrast to the Dovecot web page which states that it does support GNUtls and OpenSSL. I am not really interested in gnutls/openssl support at this time. Is there a way I can install this port without gnutls/openssl?. [Dovecot] Logging IMAP transactions

Mulberry has the ability to log the IMAP exchange client-side. Is there an equivalent logging feature in Dovecot (0.99) to log the IMAP exchange server-side? My problem is that Mulberry is displaying some complex MIME structures incorrectly (eg. nested/forwarded messages) but it seems to go away if I close a folder and re-open it. I'm suspecting that Dovecot is reporting the wrong structure on first access and then fixes something on subsequent accesses. I'd like to log the FETCH result with the structure information to see if I can spot this happening.

[Dovecot] Fedora Core 2, dovecot, and Outlook Express

After the aging harddrive in my Redhat 7.2 server died, I decided it was time to upgrade. I bought a new harddrive and did a fresh install of Fedora Core 2. I've managed to get www, ssh and sendmail reconfigured, but I'm having a heck of a time with imap. I first fooled around with cyrus-imapd, and couldn't make head or tail of it, so I downloaded a fedore core 1 imapd rpm and installed it. That almost worked, but I could only see the INBOX. Next I tried dovecot. Via Outlook Express from my winXP box, I can Refresh the IMAP folder list, and see the INBOX and the sent-mail and saved-messages folders that were created when I first ran pine. However, if I try and mark sent-mail or saved-messages as Visible, I get an "Invalid mailbox name: saved-message/" error. And when I try and view the contents of Inbox, I get "Mailbox doesn't exist: INBOX/". I tried running evolution on the server, and I could subscribe and view the INBOX. But when I try and make a new folder, it gives me a "Cannot create the specified folder. Generic error" I'm hoping I just have something misconfigured, potential due to messing around with cyrus-imapd and imapd, or perhaps even pine. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm pretty close to giving up on fedora core 2 and installing core 1, or perhaps mandrake. --Joe Hartford

[Dovecot] duplicate message headers in Thunderbird with dovecot server

I've been trying to diagnose some strange interaction between dovecot and Mozilla Thunderbird. If two clients are connected to a dovecot IMAP server, Mozilla-based clients start showing multiple messages in the message list for each message that arrives after the sessions were started. There is really only one copy of the message in the mbox file on the server. However, its UID changes repeatedly during the session, and Mozilla gets confused. From looking at Thunderbird's log of the IMAP conversation, it seems the message sequence number does not change, and I'm guessing that other clients handle the situation better because of this. Nevertheless, I found this in the IMAP RFC 3501, so my interpretation is that there is a dovecot bug involved: The unique identifier of a message MUST NOT change during the session, and SHOULD NOT change between sessions. Any change of unique identifiers between sessions MUST be detectable using the UIDVALIDITY mechanism discussed below. Persistent unique identifiers are required for a client to resynchronize its state from a previous session with the server (e.g., disconnected or offline access clients); this is discussed further in [IMAP-DISC]. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a known solution? Greetings, all Last night I migrated our mail between two machines... both running dovecot 0.99.xx. In the process, I wanted to make some small changes, namely that new mail be delivered to mboxs in /var/mail/%u and IMAP mail stored in Maildirs at ~/.imap ... I tried using: default_mail_env = maildir:~/.imap/:INBOX=mbox:/var/mail/%u But had no luck. Is it only 1.0 that can work with two different mailbox formats? Or did I screw up somewhere else? I've been having IMAP sessions "freeze" with fetchmail trying to retrieve larger e-mails, typically over 20K and always with an attachment. When I switch to POP3 I am able to retrieve the same e-mails just fine. This started at test33. I'm currently using test42 on a OpenBSD 3.5/macppc system with Maildir.

Hi, I'm running 0.99.10 on OpenBSD 3.4/i386, with Squirrelmail as the only client. I recently had dovecot fail with this in syslog: Sep 10 14:34:55 pirx imap(alisgray): Corrupted index file /home/alisgray/mail/.imap/INBOX/.imap.index: Invalid offset returned by binary tree: 118 Sep 10 14:34:55 pirx dovecot: child 20827 (imap) killed with signal 11 Poking around some, I see that dovecot.org recommends mmap_no_write=yes for OpenBSD... but that option's not implemented in 0.99.10, afaics. Does the symptom I'm seeing match the expected failure mode of OpenBSD's noncoherent mmap? I deleted .imap.* (after saving a backup) and that seems to have fixed the problem. I can provide a copy of the bad file for debugging, if necessary. And of course, if it's a known bug fixed in 1.0-test, I'd be happy to upgrade. -andy

OS : Red Hat Fedora 2.6.5-1.358 #1 sendmail: sendmail dovecot version : 0.99.10.5 i can send email to the server. the email is then appended to the /var/mail/{user} file. i can view the /var/mail/{file} and see the email. i cannot retrieve the email from the local machine using Ximian Evolution (version 1.4.6). however if i use good ole #mail in a terminal it access the file and reads all emails. also as an added twist if i type in an incorrect email for the receiving email server it fails to login. however if i change it back it gets pass the login but it just hangs at retrieving messages. (again this is all on the local machine) i am sure i am just leaving out a pointer or permissions, or something crazy like that... thanks in advance Jack Taffar

http://dovecot.org/test/ I think this release should be quite stable one. - fixes parsing mails with header lines longer than 8192 bytes - cache file corruption fixes - fixed "corrupted offset in mbox file" errors - don't return extra INBOX replies in LIST Those mbox and cache problems were pretty tricky to figure out. Thanks to Tomi Hakala for tons of testing while I tried to fix them. I've also began working with keywords support which hopefully doesn't take too long to finish. After that 1.0-alpha1 should be near.

Hello, dovecot-1.0-test32 continuously fails on one of our customers mboxes with the following error: Sep 11 16:27:15 web dovecot: POP3(xxxxxxxxxxxxx.de1): file mbox-sync-rewrite.c: line 360 (mbox_sync_read_and_move): assertion failed: (need_space == -mails[idx].space) About 200 other mboxes are working perfectly on the same server. Hey all, I've been testing out Dovecot, and it works nicely. However, when I tried to roll it to my production server, I'm getting the following error: Sep 10 17:14:22 tungsten imap-login: opendir(".") failed when trying to get list of authentication servers: Stale NFS file handle Any ideas on what I can do for this? I am running on a NFS root filesystem on the production server, so that's likely where this error is coming from. Hi First of all thanks to the authors of dovecot. It's a pleasure to work with it. I would like to ask, if somebody has an idea about how I can combine all mailusers (dovecot pop/imap & sendmail smtp) into one db, given that I'd like to use sasl with CRAM-MD5 as authentication mechanism to ensure security. The idea behind my question is, that it is easier to administer all mail users, which in my case are mostly non-interactive users, into one db, instead of creating native unix accounts for them. Hello, I am trying to run dovecot on my Linux. I am using an exim 3.30 as the MTA with vmail-sql virtual users. I have installed latest dovecot release and ran through the config file. Some options seemed unclear to me, but generally I think it is OK. The problem is, that MySQL authentication does not work. It even does not try to authenticate! Dovecot connects correctly with MySQL database, but then no activity is shown in MySQL logs - but when I try to login manually with the telnet, i get: [root@mainframe root]# telnet localhost 143 Trying 127.0.0.1.143... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK dovecot ready. 1 login [my_email] [my_password] 1 NO Authentication failed. Maybe I am doing something wrong? Hi all, when I move the attached mail from local folder in Mozilla to an IMAP folder on dovecot, it is cut just before the ... characters. There is an extra CR character. I have setup the dovecot to use Maildirs. When I copy the file with the message manualy to one of the Maildir folders it is shown correctly in Mozilla however it if I move it using Mozilla to another IMAP folder the mail is cut again. Dear all, Autodir is for creating home directories and group directories much better then pam_mkhomedir as pam_mkhomedir does suffer some limitations like, 1) There are some applications which never need to authenticate users But they need home dirs -- for example mail servers configured to use home dirs for mail delivery and storage but not configured to use pam. 2) Some do use other ways to authenticate, bypassing pam all together. 3) Servers must be root so that pam can create home dirs. Otherwise make /home similar in permissions to /tmp And there are other interesting features with Autodir like transparent backup for 24x7 online systems and many more. [Dovecot] Workaround for outlook UIDL handling bug ??

Scenario: Using Dovecot 0.99.10.9 as pop3 server. With delete on retrival off. clients: outlook* Problem: Everytihng work perfectly, except that outlooks keeps re-downloading SOME mail over and over. Though it already got them. No obvious pattern which, but only a small percentage. First of I looked at dovecots UIDLs. Initialy I thought it's broken (see my previous thread) Sorry for even thinking that, it's ok, my bad :) Rather, outlooks UIDL handling seems to be very broken :( But I think I found an easy workaround. Dovecots UIDLS seem to be timestamp.message# eg. 1 1093990148.1 2 1093990148.2 3 1093990148.3 4 1093990148.4 5 1093990148.5 6 1093990148.6 7 1093990148.7 8 1093990148.8 9 1093990148.9 10 1093990148.10 11 1093990148.11 12 1093990148.12 The problems started with #10 -> Asumption: outlook falsy only takes a fixed numbers of chars to hold the UIDL, the rest ist ignored. Perhaps only the first 13 or so. What I did is reversing the order in UIDL generation. Instead of timestamp.message# -> message#.timestamp. Seems to work perfectly. Well, a bit too early too tell if it really works. Need to wait a couple of days and see if the problem re-appears or not. The only thing I'm 100% sure is that outlooks UIDL handling is broken. BTW: very nice source code. Very easy to follow, took me 5 minutes to find the correct .c and routine. In /pop3/command.c, list_uids() all I changed is ... mail->seq, client->uidvality, mail->uid to mail->seq, mail->uid, client->uidvality. (2 times) If anyone is interested, I'll keep you informed if the problem is really gone with this mini-patch.

Our office of about 100 users is presently running its mail through an Exchange 5.5 Server. The Exchange server is protected by Linux server pass-through server running Exim4. We intend to move all of our mail and directory services to open source software, probably Exim4, Dovecot and OpenLDAP. We have a mixture of mail clients. These include Mac OS9 Entourage (about 30%), OSX Entourage (20%) and Apple Mail (50%). About 30 individuals also look in to their mailboxes using squirrelmail. Each user is permitted a mailbox of no more than 20MB in size. Project mailboxes may rise to 200MB, however, with up to 5 simultaneous users connection to each project mailbox. I would be grateful for comments on the suitability of deploying Dovecot in this production environment. I already use Dovecot for a small number of users in a different environment (Mac Eudora, XP Outlook, Squirrelmail) and it appears to work without fault. Doesn't happen to all users and doesn't seem to be dependent on size of Maildir, sending SIGTERM makes it go away and then the user opens the mailbox again and I see normal CPU usage. However 3-4 hours later it will happen again. Using FreeBSD 4.9 and dovecot-0.99.10.4, postfix 2.0.18 as MTA. If theres any other info that would be useful (this is probably the most vauge description I can manage, but its all the info I have) then let me know and I can provide. Ta Jamie

I have some experience with OBSD, squirrel, vpopmail and dovecot. This could have caused various strange problems, but looks like in practise it rarely caused real problems.

Hi: It appears that at least at one time, Dovecot supported plaintext authentication from localhost, even if disable_plaintext_auth = yes. To wit, the example configuration file reads: # Disable LOGIN command and all other plaintext authentications unless # SSL/TLS is used (LOGINDISABLED capability). Note that 127.*.*.* and # IPv6 ::1 addresses are considered secure, this setting has no effect if # you connect from those addresses. #disable_plaintext_auth = yes On brief inspection of the code, there doesn't seem to be any such support. This is corroborated by the fact that 0.99.10 (Debian package) behaves by disallowing plaintext authentication via connections on localhost. This is a particularly useful feature, as local webmail clients can safely authenticate via the local interface without requiring secure authentication. So, the question is, is Dovecot supposed to support plaintext auth via localhost even if disallowed in dovecot.conf? If so, any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong? Yours truly, Paul C. I've discoverd when I add the line pam_access for access authentication, It always denys a login, even when access.conf accepts everything. I've tested this with other programs, and they work okay. Any ideas?

I'm having a few problems with dovecot-imapd (installed from debian unstable) and am after some much needed help, all is set up and configured, except for this final problem of when I try and move or copy a message from one Maildir to another. I have the option "maildir_copy_with_hardlinks = no" in the the dovecot.conf file but it still seems to be trying to link() the file instead of doing a proper copy. There is a log fragment below for when I try to do a move, the FS that my Maildir is on doesn't support link() hence the problem. It seems to be doing a proper copy to get it into the tmp/ part of the Maildir and then a link() to put it in new/. Any ideas on how to cure this? For me, the error occurs only using Outlook (2003 in my case). Horde's WebMail client IMP and OpenNMS' IMAP poller work fine though. Reverting back to test32 helped, after I found out about a recent change in ostream-file.c in CVS aroung August 15. BTW, test32 fixes the mbox 'empty lines at beginning of file' corruption problem someone reported here lately too. Regards, Martin

I'm getting a flood of errors that look like: Sep 3 13:27:02 localhost dovecot: login: received another "not listening" notification (if you can't login at all, see src/lib/fdpass.c) every few minutes. Versions: Dovecot: 0.99.10.9 Exim: 4.34 Debian Linux 2.6.8-1-686-smp Squirrelmail: 1.4.3a Although the majority of users (99%) have no problems logging in and reading their mail, occasionally one user gets timeouts when trying to access their mailbox, seems to correlate with the errors. I can't locate fdpass.c, so what does this error indicate?

I was wondering today that no-one noticed this, but I also noticed it only after trying to run it in Solaris, with Linux it worked fine. (I hate t_strconcat() API but I just can't get myself to stop using it.)

Hi all, I'm reading the docs and confs and it's not quite sinking in, mostly cuz I've been reading IMAP docs for a week now trying to find one that I want. :) I have a mail server that will have about 800 webmail users without actual home directories. Can I set up the IMAP dir in another location, like /var/imap, where everyone can read/store their mail? Or just use the /var/spool/mail/<user> mbox file and make a sub dir for the indexing files? Sorry if this is basic, all I saw was ~/Maildir locs. :P Thanks! -- C

http://dovecot.org/test/ - Recent flag fixes - saving/copying mails into maildir which didn't have index files was broken - output stream fix - pop3 crashfix - mbox_dirty_syncs fixes, also disabling it didn't work before - etc. There are still some crashes and I don't remember if I fixed a problem with mboxes where expunging mails while new mails were coming caused some breakages.. but I can't reproduce it anymore. Anyway I think that could be fixed with disabling dirty syncs.

Of course it's useless and this just can't work ... if I try it returns with an error message. Can't bind to port xy. No problem, that's the way it should be, but further strange things worth mentioning happen. After the second instance quits with error msg, the currently running instance doesn't accept any client connections anymore. Needs to be restarted. (currently I'm only using dc 0.99.10.9 as pop3 server) That's really no problem, but strange :> (I admit I'm somewhat curious if this problem is specific to my setup or if its happening everywhere)

I have the exact same problem as being described in this posting from february: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2004-February/002950.html That mutt in combination with dovecot dosen't show correctly which folders contains new messages. It is starting to bug me very much, so i'm willing to do about everything to help fix this problem. The problem is, that I don't know if it's a mutt or dovecot problem? I'm not a novice c-hacker, so I shoud be able to test about every idea that someone has about where this problem comes from. Hope someone will help me in my quest to crush this bug. dovecot-0.99.10.5-0.FC2 I have had a report from a user that when accessing their inbox, the connection is suddenly dropped. Dovecot reports the following:- imap(user): file buffer.c: line 357 (buffer_set_start_pos): assertion failed: (abs_pos <= I_MIN(buf->used, buf->limit)) From searching the list, I found an indication that it is a problem with an individual message. [Dovecot] sig11 with test36/37 on some emails

Sometimes I'll get an email from a luser which will cause the POP3 daemon to sig11. The email "appears" to be legal. The sig11s only happen on specific emails, and once I remove the emails from the server, the rest can be downloaded. I gzipped the email, and its at http://theapt.org/bogusemail.gz. While this example is international spam, the sig11s happen with real emails too. -- Entropy isn't what it used to be.

Hi, I'm using dovecot under fedora core 2. Nearly everything seems to work. Dovecot was easily to configure and is a really smart program. BUT ... I figured out a problem. Whenever I fetch my mails (pop3s) using Outlook, TheBat or Pegasus, the mails on the server will not be marked as read. Sometimes I don't have a nice GUI mail client, than I use pine (I love it, but I won't feed the trolls ;-)). All messages, which I have already received are marked as new in pine or my webinterface squirrelmail. It seems, that dovecot doesn't mark the messages as read after fetching them. There are no strange entries in the logs, nothing which seems to be mysterious. Can anyone help me? This problem teases me. Cheers, DuRu

Originally I was planning on making 0.99.10.x series only for a few months and leave 0.99.11 for the larger changes, but 1.0- tests are now used for that. Version numbering is difficult. So, assuming there are no problems found from this RC, I'll release 0.99.11 tomorrow. Changes are: + 127.* and ::1 IP addresses are treated as secured with disable_plaintext_auth = yes + auth_debug setting for extra authentication debugging + Some documentation and error message updates - If APPENDed mail ended with CR character, Dovecot aborted the saving - Output streams sometimes sent data duplicated and lost part of it. This could have caused various strange problems, but looks like in practise it rarely caused real problems.

Hi ! Problem: Auth doesn't work, can't figure out why :( More precisely: setup: dovecot 0.99.10.9 pop3 only Userdb + Passwd via passwd-file. Anything plaintext. (communication client server, passwords in passwd-file, well, for first tests non public server... if I get it working, I'll try better ways - of course) non standard parts of my config: protocols = pop3 ssl_disable = yes auth = default auth_mechanisms = plain auth_userdb = passwd-file /passwd_file auth_passdb = passwd-file /passwd_file auth_verbose = yes /passwd_file content: nick#sales.blabla:{PLAIN}test:500:500::::/mail/nick well, syntax is not 100% obvious from docu, but that's the way I understood it. (examples would be nice) That's how I understood semantics: If client sends user nick#sales.blabla and password test, dovecot accesses /mail/nick (maildir) with UID 500, GID 500 ???? problem: Auth fails. In logfiles I get this: dovecot-auth: Aug 30 22:36:20 Info: mech-plain(nick#sales.blabla): invalid username. (So no typo in mail client account setup or anytihng like this). Of course clients says auth fialed as well. Well, nick#sales.blabla is not a user on the test machine, but that's on purpose. It IS in /passwd-file :/ Anyone any idea ? Thx i.A for help !

After changing a mailserver from using mbox/ext3 (RHL9) to Maildir/jfs (RHEL 3), dovecot 0.99.10 no longer reports new email even if asked... I have to restart the mail client and do a fresh login to notice new email. I've been playing around with Dovecot for the past few months for testing (on a Debian 3.0 system), and initially it was easy to setup and worked well. Recently I upgraded to 0.99.10.9, and when I rebuilt it I enabled MySQL and SSL. The first problem I ran into was upon startup it complained that there was no certificate, which makes sense, except that I hadn't enabled imaps in the config file. It would make more sense not to require SSL support files if SSL isn't being used. But this is minor. I encountered more serious problems when I tried migrating from real user accounts to virtual accounts via MySQL. Has anyone written a howto on setting up Dovecot with MySQL? (Just pointing to dovecot-mysql.conf leaves out a lot.) If not, I'll volunteer to write something up. I set up dovecot-mysql.conf as I thought it should be, created a database, added a record with a digest-md5 password, and changed some dovecot.conf directives as follows: default_mail_env = maildir:/var/mail/%d/%n/ auth_mechanisms = digest-md5 auth_default_realm = example.com auth_userdb = static uid=5000 gid=5000 home=/var/mail/%d/%n/ auth_passdb = mysql /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf For the static auth_userdb I wasn't quite sure what to put after home= as I wasn't really defining a home directory location. I initially tried making it identical to default_mail_env, but later learned that it clearly didn't like the "maildir:" prefix. Some questions the documentation left unanswered: Is home= required if default_mail_env will suffice for virtual users? Can mail= be used instead, as implied by the database documentation? Practically speaking, is there any difference between the two in the case of virtual user accounts? I tried to access Dovecot from a mail client and repeatedly received a login failure. Unfortunately, this is typical of what I saw in the log file: Aug 8 03:53:50 lex dovecot: Dovecot starting up Aug 8 03:53:52 lex dovecot-auth: MySQL: connected to localhost Aug 8 03:55:13 lex imap-login: Disconnected: Inactivity [192.168.0.200] I enabled auth_verbose: auth_verbose = yes and checked my syslog.conf to make sure all priorities were being logged: mail.* /var/log/syslog/mail.log but still no additional verbosity. How should things look different when auth_verbose is enabled? Checking MySQL's log I could see that Dovecot was successfully connecting to the database server, but never executing any queries. I was going to next turn on logging of all IMAP traffic, but noticed the Wiki suggested trying a manual session, which I did: % telnet localhost imap * OK dovecot ready. 1 LOGIN tmetro(a)example.com password 1 NO Login failed: Unsupported authentication mechanism Isn't this the kind of thing that should appear in the log when auth_verbose is enabled? That seemed odd, as 'digest-md5' is mentioned right in dovecot.conf as a valid choice. In retrospect, I gather what the message above is trying to tell me is that Dovecot wasn't configured to accept a 'plain' authentication, which is apparently what I was using in my manual session. It would be nice if the error message could express that a bit better. I did have some suspicion that it might be the that plain text authentication was being prevented, as at that point I didn't know what auth_mechanisms applied to, but I looked at dovecot.conf and found disable_plaintext_auth = no, which seemed to imply that plain text at the IMAP protocol level should have been permitted. Might it be clearer if that attribute was incorporated into the auth_mechanisms settings or at least moved into the auth section? I switched it to 'plain-md5', as mentioned in auth.txt, and tried again. That resulted in: Aug 8 21:11:53 lex dovecot-auth: Unknown authentication mechanism 'plain-md5' Aug 8 21:11:53 lex dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down Aug 8 21:11:53 lex dovecot: child 10293 (auth) returned error 89 Aug 8 21:11:53 lex imap-login: fd_send(-1) failed: Broken pipe That got me wondering whether there were two different areas where authentication terms apply - one being the password exchange in the IMAP protocol, and the other being how the password is stored on the server - yet the discussion of the two seems to be mixed together in the documentation. I tried switching to: auth_mechanisms = plain and finally got something more expected: Aug 8 21:20:44 lex dovecot-auth: mysql(tmetro(a)example.com): Password mismatch I tried putting the password into the database unencrypted, but that didn't work (probably because of my default_pass_scheme setting?). Generating a PLAIN-MD5 per auth.txt finally worked. This leads to some questions: auth_mechanisms doesn't seem to be describing the way in which the password is stored, so what does it describe? In dovecot-mysql.conf I had: default_pass_scheme = DIGEST-MD5 and didn't change it. What purpose does it serve? Is it only to identify the encryption used when there isn't a {SCHEME} tag present? For DIGEST-MD5, which encrypts "user:realm:pass", does realm include the @? Does user include @realm? I assumed no in both cases, yet it didn't work. In other matters...during one of my login attempts I got: * OK dovecot ready. 1 LOGIN tmetro(a)example.com password 1 OK Logged in. Connection closed by foreign host. The abrupt disconnect after an apparently successful login seemed odd. The log file showed: Aug 8 21:23:47 lex dovecot: chdir(maildir:/var/mail/example.com/tmetro/) failed with uid 5000: Permission denied Aug 8 21:23:47 lex dovecot: child 10315 (imap) returned error 89 which is the problem I discussed above, but is it reasonable for Dovecot to disconnect the IMAP socket and not send an error message to the client? At the end of the dovecot-example.conf is: #auth = digest_md5 #auth_methods = digest-md5 #auth_realms = #auth_userdb = passwd-file /etc/passwd.imap #auth_passdb = passwd-file /etc/passwd.imap #auth_user = imapauth #auth_chroot = Is auth_methods an alias for auth_mechanisms? Aside from the insufficient detail in the log, most of the difficulty I encountered could be avoided with better documentation and comments in the config files. I'd be happy to submit clarified comments once I get some answers to the above questions and confirm my understanding of how things work. -Tom

Hello and ... help! I am using Redhat FC2. I was looking for a simple POP3 compatible application package that would allow growth into secure mailboxes, and it looks like dovecot can fill the bill, and then some. I am a newbie. I scanned the Wiki but am as confused by it as I am by my problems. Fortunately for me, I don't need 7 different authentication schemes; I just need something simple that works with Thunderbird and Outlook Express. Is there a HOW-TO around that shows simple pop3 setup on Linux? #1) I had the pop3-login working for a bit, but now it has stopping starting up. When I attempt a <./dovecot stop>, I get a message that the stop has [FAILED]. I believe this is because it is leaving a lock in the /var/lock/subsys directory. I delete that file and try again, same problem. The system starts okay, but there are no longer any pop3-login processes being started up. <ps -elf | egrep pop3*> returns nothing but the grep process. #2) I need a simple method to access email. Nothing fancy as I only have a couple of users. Terrorists woud be wasting their time to monkey with my server. In the dovecot.conf file, here are a few of my settings. pop3_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/pop3 pop3_process_size = 256 auth = passwd auth_mechanisms = plain auth_realms = auth_default_realm = auth_userdb = passwd: /etc/passwd auth_passdb = passwd: /etc/passwd auth_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-auth auth_process_size = 256 auth_user = root auth_count = 2 Any help would be greatly appreciated, of course. http://dovecot.org/test/ - Added mbox_dirty_syncs setting, defaulting to yes. This means that while mbox is opened and new mails come, it only reads the new mails instead of the whole mbox. Then there's several checks that make sure this is safe to do and if something doesn't look right it fallbacks to syncing the whole mbox again. - dovecot-auth was leaking memory (not same bug as with 0.99/ldap) - Some other fixes

Tim, Thanks for the reply. I did check the maillog quite a bit. Fortunately, I had kept an orig of the dovecot.conf file so I rolled back to the example I found on the dovecot.org website and now it's up and running. It's all smoke and mirrors to me, mostly, but at least it's working for now. I'll come back to this question of implementing TLS or SSL later, in my voluminous spare time. It appears to be a very powerful program and should carry me through to the next millenium... I just upgraded my RH9 installation to Fedora 2. To my surprise, imapd seems to be gone from the core. I noticed there are now two IMAP servers docevot and cyrus. After reading brief descriptions of both, dovecot would seem to be more compatible with my setup. Especially since I'm using mbox's. I have 2 questions. It seems like dovecot does not support mailboxes inside of a directories. Am I right in thinking this? Second I get the error message: The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Error in IMAP command MYRIGHTS: Unknown command. My client is Thunderbird. Any work around for this? Thanks, Mike

Hello, running 0.99.10.6 (but seen it before that, too). Also (quite obviously) running 5 auth processes, given the fact that this is a pretty busy box and I didn't want to introduce any artificial bottlenecks. Alas with them eating up half of the free memory (which would go to a much better use as FS cache) I'm getting sorta concerned. If it's not a leak, it's caching something rather needlessly and inefficiently (the LDAP DB memory footprint for ALL users is less than this and the box below just serves half of those).
