I have a user that I need to move over from a mail server running cyrus using MailDir format. At first I told him to setup second account with Thunderbird to our mail server and then use Thunderbird to move the messages over. But he has over 100K messages so not as easy to do. Is there a tool out there for doing this sort of conversion? I tried to simply cat all the messages into a single file, but just got a "Not valid mbox format" when I tried to read the mail folder. - -- C. J. When is the maildir quota usages recalculated and written to the second line of the "maildirsize" file? [Dovecot] Test environment question

My production DC machine owns the mail filesystems and is running DC V1.0.15 and mbox folder format. I am looking to test V1.1.3 on another machine, which NFS mounts the mail filesystems, but has its own local index FS. I have made this test environment my default connection in TBird, and it seems to work just fine. Also, I have made sure that my TBird client isn't connecting to the production server (it has multiple accounts but I have turned off the cehck for mail when starting and check for new mail every N minutes functions, and then check the ps table to make sure there are no imap connections) However, I'm seeing two errmsgs in the maillog on the test machine: > Sep 22 11:54:13 egg mail:err|error dovecot: IMAP(sdean): posix_fallocate() faile > d: Protocol not available > Sep 22 11:54:13 egg mail:err|error dovecot: IMAP(sdean): file_set_size() failed > with mbox file /var/spool/mail/sdean: Protocol not available which appear to happen AFTER mail arrives at the production server....it seems to happen on my test server the next time my client goes to access mail AFTER mail has arrived at the production server. Subsequent client requests of the test server execute without error until AFTER the next time mail arrives at and my inbox is updated with it. Again, if I hadn't looked at the logs, I wouldn't know there was a problem...I can see my new mail just fine from the test server. The questions: Is this anything I should be concerned about? Is this a bug or a legit problem coming from my improper use of two servers against the same data. FWIW, I am using fcntl for both mbox read and write locks. procmail in the MDA on the production server, and its locking hierarchy <dotlock,fcntl>, which Timo previously approved. Thanks! Hi Timo, i tried a littel bit playing with shared mailboxes namespace shared { separator = / # %%u gets expanded to the remote user. Instead of %%u you can # also use %%n and %%d. prefix = "shared/" location = maildir:/usr/local/virtual/%d:CONTROL=/usr/local/virtual/%d:INDEX=/usr/local/virtual/%d inbox = no list = yes subscriptions = yes hidden = no } should at last show all other users mailboxes when .DEFAULT acl is authenticated lr and dovecot-acl in /usr/local/virtual/%d is authenticated lr too but instead only shared is shown in thunderbird playing with %%u etc in combinations does not lead to working results too (sometimes shared^^ was shown, might be user(a)domain.de isnt working for shared maildirs, @ could be a problem to maildir....?) your example was namespace shared { separator = / # %%u gets expanded to the remote user. Hi guys, It would be really nice if there were an easy way to see how much space an individual imap account used when a user logged out; something like pop3_logout_format = size=%s. I appreciate that this isn't so easy in imap though - I was thinking of using the quota plugin with no limit or something like that. Hello, I have some trouble with the current setup (it's a testing environment): 2 server with Dovecot 1.1.4 from source (OS Debian testing 2.6.26) (name: "exim" and "exim2") 1 NFS server (OS Debian testing 2.6.26) I use NFS v.4, indexes shared over NFS. The relavant part of Dovecot configuration: dotlock_use_excl = yes mail_nfs_storage = yes mail_nfs_index = yes mmap_disable = yes lock_method = dotlock Maildir format. /etc/exports on NFS server: /mnt safe. I can try to move indexes on the local disk, the trouble with dovecot.index disappear but I have again problem with dovecot-uidlist. I can reproduce this kind of problem easly: 2 clients on the same mailbox connected to two different imap server and a simple bash script that send 2 email every 1 second to the mailbox. There is some option/configuration that I can try to change?

[Dovecot] zlib plugin

hi, Could anyone give some info on this plugin? When i read the wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Zlib) i'm still left with some questions... I use Maildir to store my mails, if i enable this zlib-plugin, should i 'manually' compress all messages? or wil the uncompressed messages still be accessible by dovecot? wil new messages be compressed automagically? how should the compressed messages be named? a message now has the name '1223224520.2783_1.opensuse:2,S' how would a compressed message be named? [Dovecot] Folders within folders?

I'm trying to migrate my emails from an existing server (University of Washington IMAP toolkit) to dovecot. My clients are all using Thunderbird. I'm moving to a new Ubuntu based server (old one was Centos4) and selected dovecot solely because it was the default option. I'm not committed to it if it isn't the right tool for my application. My existing server allows hierarchical folders and these are used to organize 20 years worth of carefully sorted emails. I can create a new folders on the dovecot server but Thunderbird doesn't allow me to create new sub-folders within them. I think T-bird is configured OK since this works on the old server. Is this a dovecot limitation or have I configured it incorrectly?

I'm having problems getting dovecot to set imap quotas that are defined as individual quotas for virtual users using mysql. I'm using postfix/dovecot 1.1.3, just built from source about a week ago. I've been testing using telnet and getquotaroot. when I define the quota in dovecot.conf quota = dirsize quota_rule = *:storage=102400 I get the following response from Dovecot: # telnet 127.0.0.1 143 Connected to 127.0.0.1. * OK Dovecot ready. . login test222(a)example.com password . However, when I define that data in the dovecot-sql.conf file, it doesn't appear to pick the data up, either as an override, or, if I delete quota_rule = *:storage=102400 from dovecot.conf, I get no quota at all . getquotaroot inbox . I'm working at the next part of the virtual domains mail server. I'm moving this account (raanders(a)acm.org is a forwarder) which has a bunch of procmail rules to file into folders. My question is if it is more efficient is use? if { ... } elsif { ... } elsif { ... } else This seems to be the way many of the example scripts do it but I found at least one that used if { ... } if { ... } Which is more procmail like and for me reads easier. Hello all, I would like to bench imap with mstone but the only thing I see is imap command read login logout banner but there is no write. So I can't stress as well as with imaptest. Does anyone have a dovecot.wld or a special configuration to test with mstone ? Thanks

As I said in a previous reply the server is going great. In fact I can even send mail via it. (On the really old server I'm moving from I couldn't get authentication for outbound to work.) I now have a couple of small issues to deal with before moving completely off the old system. Virtual domains aliases? My reading seems to indicate that Postfix only handles aliases in one place/file. Ie., I can't use a /var/mail/vhosts/domain.tld/aliases. This is probably a Postfix question but I'm asking anyway. I am pretty sure there are some Postfix people-of-significance hanging out here. :-) Thanks, Rod --

I'm a bit further along but haven't figured out why Authentication is still failing. I've tried a telnet to port 143 and openssl connection to 993. The command I issued, per the debugging page on the wiki, is: a login info(a)aesoft-sbcs.com crap Here is a snapshot from my logs (yup second try and blank lines to make it easier for me to read). What is puzzling me is why the source connection's IP is showing up in the /lookup/. I did not create the directory /var/mail/vhosts/aesoft-sbcs.com/info/Maildir Should I? [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.1.x or 1.2, which way to go for Kolab Server?

Hi Timo, Hi *, was written the other day we started to use Dovecot 1.2 for our Kolab with Dovecot project, but it turned out that there are quite a bunch of issues with 1.2 (which is ok, as it hasn't even been announced as beta till now). We have a customer who should get a first test installation of Kolab with Dovecot in the first week of September and for that we need the features mentioned in my other mails, especially the enhanced name spaces for shared folders. (%%h, listing of shared folders, an checkpassword like backend for userdb). So the big decision to make is: - stay with 1.1.x and port the needed shared namespace stuff back from 1.2 or - build on 1.2 and resolve all issues caused by it Timo, do you have any opinion/advice on this? How far from being production ready is 1.2 in your view? How hard would it be to get the shared folder/namespace stuff in 1.1.x? (or for that matter: who much harder than to do it in 1.2?) [Dovecot] Maildir++ problem

Hi to all, I am semi-new to the dovecot system, but i like it very much for the versatility of all the system. I have a problem: i am migrating my servers from postfix with vda patch + courier imap to dovecot. All works fine, except for one thing: i use Maildir++ format, but i don't know how to make the file maildirsize into the home of the users. This file is needed by me becouse i have a script, running every day, checking the quota status and sending me a mail of the space occuped by every mailbox on my mailserver. The format of the maildirsize file is like this: 15360000S 12393886 1 How dovecot can generate that file? I have searched into all the documentation, but i don't find anything... What parameters must be specified into the config file to generate the maildirsize file? I know I'm looking at the answer but probably not seeing it on the Wiki? Is there a "manual" for Dovecot? Or ... where do I find all the options for the userdb and passdb options? While trying to get my head wrapped around this I noticed I might have been mixing args between the two. One example has userdb first then the next one passdb. Rod --

[Dovecot] Improvements to "Authentication failed" error

Probably one of the most commonly asked question is "Why does Dovecot just say authentication failed"? It would be nice to be able to get rid of these questions by having Dovecot itself point out the http://wiki.dovecot.org/WhyDoesItNotWork link. But how to do this? There are two groups of people here: 1) People who look at logs after seeing the "Authentication failed" from a client/telnet session. 2) People who don't even think about looking at logs. I'm thinking that the group 1 could be handled by having Dovecot log the link once as informational message if the first authentication attempt fails and it's from localhost. This shouldn't cause problems I think. Group 2 is more difficult though, and I fear they're also the ones asking this question more often than group 1.. I think the only solution would be to change the IMAP/POP3 error message for them. So instead of: NO Authentication failed. they'd get something more usable. So: 2a) NO Authentication failed. See http://wiki.dovecot.org/WhyDoesItNotWork. 2b) NO Authentication failed. Refer to server log for more information. 2c) NO Authentication failed. Enable auth_debug in server for more information. But there are some problems I think: - If it's done only for connections from localhost, the error messages would be different from localhost vs. elsewhere, which might confuse some log parser scripts. - Some people are running stunnel or some other proxies, causing all connections to appear from localhost. Also webmails often run in localhost. So it can't be assumed that only admins will see the error message. I think this rules out 2a) message. I'm certain I don't want end users emailing me and asking why they can't connect to their server because they saw that link. - Sending 2b) for all connections could be a solution, but it might be confusing for end users. They of course can't refer to server log.. Also unless the wiki link is logged for every failure or auth_debug is enabled, there's nothing useful in the server log. - Sending 2c) for all connections when auth_debug isn't enabled (and plain "Authentication failed" when it is) might also work, but it's again confusing to end users since they can't do that. Any thoughts?
