where I'm doing wrong. [Dovecot] Looking for HowTo Postifx, Dovecot and PostgreSQL

Hi folks, I know it's a bit a n00bish question, but I'm a little confused about this many different ways on setting up dovecot with postfix and using a PostgreSQL backend for virtual hosts. I've found this one quiet helpful: http://wiki2.dovecot.org/HowTo/DovecotPostgresql even it seems to be little outdated for recent versions of dovecot (the auth part of dovecot.conf). Also its lagging some inforamtions I wasn't able to find on my own (e.g. how to set password for a imap account). Can somebody give me a hint for a up-2-date howto for some noob as I am? Hi, I'm using Dovecot 2.2.9 (debian package on testing). It seems that it's not possible to open an auth socket using ssl. But the 5221, which should listen in ssl (because of the "ssl = yes" as written in the documentation here : http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Services ) is using plaintext. If I telnet directly to it, the content is delivered on an unsecured socket. Is there a way to make ssl works on this kind of socket ? Thanks a lot

Hi, I'm currently developing a scrambler plugin which should be used to store the mails encrypted on the disk. It uses a special ostream for encryption and an istream for decryption. The idea is, that if a mail arrives via LMTP it goes through the ostream and is written encrypted to disk. If an mail is accessed via IMAP, the istream is used to decrypt the data from disk. That all works fine, but if I add the zlib plugin it all gets mixed up. For some reason, the lmtp process tries to read something from disk using the chain of istreams. That behaviour is a little bit bizzare to me, because my understanding is, that the zlib plugin at this point should only write (compressed) data to disk. Why is the istream used here? And what is read? If I remove zlib from the configuration again, it all works as expected. The dovecot version is 2.1.17. Best regards, Philipp

[Dovecot] LMTP troubles

Background: Dovecot: v 2.0.9 OS: AWS Linux (derived from CentOS) At this stage I've avoided upgrading to a newer version of Dovecot as version 2.0.9 is what AWS Linux provides and I'd like to be able to run a regular AWS Linux installation if I can. As opposed to pulling newer versions of dovecot from other repositories or building from source, since the odds are this issue is not a bug in dovecot. I've just tried setting up the LMTP service and eventually uncovered that that the greeting the server responds with straight after connecting isn't being returned. This must be a configuration mistake on my behalf but I just haven't been able to figure it out yet. I haven't had LMTP configured for awhile but I'm sure I've had it all in place and don't recall any issue like this. I have no idea about the architecture of dovecot and the LMTP service but it's as if dovecot has successfully bound to the port allocated for LMTP* but the the LMTP service has either not started or dovecot doesn't know which service to pass the connection on to. * - dovecot has definitely bound to the port (localhost:24) as netstat clearly shows this. I've tried enabling debug logging per the details here http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Logging and checked that I'm looking at all the logs I need to be using doveadm log find but not seeing any information that helps. At the moment I know I'm light on necessary detail for anyone to help but I thought I'd try in case anyone has seen this before and is able to tell me I've missed X and Y. I'm planning on setting up a clean environment to sort this issue out and if needed will follow up here with more detail and the final solution/s. Thanks Phillip

is there any chance of rfc5703 (mime support/extension) being added to pigeonhole? I am trying to filter mail with .exe and .zip attachments, to no success. I have tried *header :contains "x-attached" [".zip", ".exe"] *but emails i'm getting don't have x-attached. a sample snippet is below. I am not sure I understood this issue correctly... When using maildir with ie ldap. Suppose ldap attribute settings say gid 8 and uid 999, Those are the permissions for every email address. If so, someone who has access to one email user on the server, has access to all. If this is so, is using mailbox instead of maildir resolve this problem? Thanks in advance

I'm following a tutorial[1] on how to configure dovecot and the tutorial says to insert the following configuration options into the dovecot.conf file: disable_plaintext_auth = no mail_privileged_group = mail mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u userdb { driver = passwd } This seems to have worked for a lot of others using this tutorial but not for me. When I try to start dovecot, I am told that the section at userdb is an unknown section type. I've spent the last few hours on Google searching this out and I've gotten conflicting answers that don't make sense. Is this the proper way to use the userdb directive? For information, I've also tried userdb{ driver = passwd-file } and that didn't work either. So I'm assuming that perhaps userdb is deprecated somehow but I don't know what to replace it with. Hi Guys, I want to make some new changes to my exim mail server So if any user archive his/her mail they will save on any other server not on Exim server , and whenever user want to search for any old mail he will go to archive folder and can search it from there.... So basically i want to setup a diffrent server for archiving and want to connect it to my Exim server. So whevever user archive his/her mail it will autometically save to diffrent server. Hope to get some attention about this idea to reduce hacking passwords. Here is a list of about 700,000 IP addresses that are hacking passwords through SMTP AUTH http://ipadmin.junkemailfilter.com/auth-hack.txt This is a list of IP addresses that attempted to authenticate against my fake AUTH advertizing on servers with no authentication. We do front end spam filtering for thousands of domains and I decided to advertize authentication where there is none and I accept and blackhole all authenticated email to those servers. I have harvested the IP addresses in this list that is available through an RBL. It seems to me that a nice dovecot feature would be the ability to do a black list check against IP addresses connecting and deny access if listed. Thoughts?

I need to backup some of the mailboxes on our system. We are currently using mdbox with zlib compression plugin. The backups need to be maildir without compression. How can I accomplish this using dsync? I’m using the Dovecot Enterprise Edition on Centos 6.5, but Blowfish password hashes don’t seem to work. What can I do to enable Blowfish hashes for passwords? Maybe I don’t have my installation configured properly? Note that I really want to use the existing Blowfish hashes in my MySQL database for Dovecot Authentication. The hashes are generated by PHP crypt() that has Blowfish support built-in. I looked at PHP’s sources, and PHP uses crypt_blowfish.c from http://www.openwall.com/crypt/. This code is in the public domain and could easily be used by Dovecot to support Blowfish passwords on all platforms (if Dovecot doesn’t already support Blowfish on all platforms). Kevin

Hi. mail_log_events is nice addition but how to log who exactly triggered particular event? For example 5 users from 5 IP addresses uses single imap user/mailbox. One of them deletes email and I'm logging delete related events. The only logged thing is: dovecot: imap(user): delete: box=INBOX, uid=673287, msgid=<some@thing>, size=1230 which tells me nothing about who triggered it actually (note all 5 users were logged in at deletion time) How to solve this problem? Hi, I am seeing occasional log entries like: Feb 4 06:20:01 mail1 dovecot: imap(user(a)example.com): Error: read(<imap client>) failed: zlib.read(<imap client>): unexpected EOF at 894774 Feb 4 06:20:01 mail1 dovecot: imap(user(a)example.com): Disconnected in APPEND (1 msgs, 201 secs, 0/5180550 bytes) in=894774 out=643701 I've been able to correlate this to users - using Thunderbird - complaining that they have been unable to "send email". Is the problem on the Dovecot side, their side or something else? If on the Dovecot any pointers and what I should look at? Thanks, Anand

Hi everyone, I am having some trouble with shared folders in trying to replicate how we use them with a Cyrus backend. The auth database is Samba4 active directory, so I am using an LDAP lookup to authenticate and forcing the UID and GID to be all the same. I have a post-login script that sets the group ACL, and this seems to be working fine. /mnt/mail is an NFS mount to a FreeNAS machine, and there is only one Dovecot server connecting to that NFS share. I have been able to get the inbox of the shared mailbox to appear in Thunderbird, but I would like to allow all subfolders to have the same ACLs. Is there a way to do this without having an ACL entry for each folder in the dovecot-acl file? I also cannot seem to create folders under the shared inbox. Thanks. Hi, It would be nice if the recipient_delimiter configuration option supported multiple recipient delimiters as Postfix now does. e.g. now if I set: recipient_delimiter = +- in Postfix, then test-extension(a)sample.com and test+extension(a)sample.com are both recognized. But if I set: recipient_delimiter = +- in Dovecot, neither of the above are recognized and instead test+-extension(a)sample.com is valid. Well, presently this feature isn't that important to me, but I imagine it could be a source of confusion for people who are migrating from say qmail to postfix (as I am doing) and notice Postfix's cool ability to support both types of delimiters and assume Dovecot will as well (as I did). I am trying to have a default sieve rule for new mailboxes that can be edited by users using the round cube sieve plugin. It would actually be better executed when a new user is created but my postfixadmin runs on a separate machine so that's a bit tricky. Replication mitigates node failure, but not disk failure, so you still need RAID in each node. So you have RAID6 in a node and filesystem block mirroring amongst nodes. Thus storage utilization is -worse- than direct attach, CFS on SAN, or NFS head attached RAID10 and far worse than RAID6 in these 3 setups. And if using large SSD cache you'd surely use RAID6 with DAS, CFS, or NFS. You'd need half as many disk drives vs DFS. Each DFS expansion, assuming the typical model, entails the cost of a server, RAID HBA (unless using md) and disks, not strictly buying disks as with DAS, CFS/SAN, or NFS filer. Then you also need more switch ports, more power connections, greater UPS capacity due to all the CPUs, RAM, etc in the nodes. And you'll have a higher electric bill. So while a distributed filesystem storage architecture may seem less expensive it may not be. And just as one can build a DIY DFS cluster, one can also build a DIY NFS cluster instead of buying a NetApp, saving significant cash on the front end box and on disks since you'd need half as many vs a distributed filesystem architecture, though failure of one node may not be quite as graceful as with a NetApp losing a controller board. -- Stan

Hi, I'm having issues getting replication working, and I'm not also not having much luck finding help on it. So I'm wondering... am I not asking the right questions? Or am I not providing enough information... or do we just not know how this aspect of the technology works? If it's the former, then any pointers on what questions to ask or information to provide would be very helpful. If the community genuinely doesn't know how this works then that's okay too - I will look at another solution (if one exists) and try to move on. But if I can get this working then that would be amazing as I really like Dovecot and would be gutted to move away from it. -Mark

[Dovecot] managesieve - point me in the right direction?

Hi, I am using Dovecot 2.1.16. I'm trying to get Roundcube to talk to the managesieve plugin. Postfix/Dovecot/Roundcube all exist on the same server. I'd like to get managesieve working. I've gone through a few guides, such as: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/dovecot#Sieve But so far roundcube won't connect to the managesieve plugin. ("Cant reach server"). I see that port 4190 is listening and I can telnet to that port: Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. Hey guys, i have a weird problem i'm trying to fix since 5 months now, but i really couldn't find any explanation, why this happens and how it can be fixed. [Dovecot] outlook will not sync

Dovecot users list, I started having problems with Outlook not syncing with Dovecot a public imap folder upon issuing a send/receive in the client; eventually Outlook timed out, and I received the following error in the Dovecot log. Dear All, I'm using version 2.1.7 which currently ships with debian stable. I'd like to use userdb { driver = passwd-file args = username_format=%n /etc/dovecot/users default_fields = uid=vmail gid=vmail override_fields = skip = never result_failure = continue result_internalfail = continue result_success = return-ok } from [1]. The error message is: Jan 25 14:02:03 post1 dovecot: lda(chris): Error: user chris: Initialization failed: Namespace '': stat(/home/vmail/chris/Maildir) failed: Permission denied (euid=1000(chris) egid=1000(chris) missing +x perm: /home/vmail/chris, dir owned by 1001:1001 mode=0700) The skip and result_* commands aren't supported. My users file: chris:{MD5-CRYPT}$1$3uC3URg......:::/home/vmail/chris/:/bin/false:: Dovecot should access the Maildir with vmail:vmail (1001:1001) and not chris:chris (1000:1000)!
