Adding new server (POP3 only)

Good morning, we're facing a spike in users activation and we've decided to add another server for POP3 only. Since our dovecot is currently backed by NFS, i'm under the impression we just need to add a new instance listening for POP3, backed by the same NFS. However, i'm afraid the existing POP3 users will download the messages once again, due to the fact the responding server will be on a different IP address, even if the hostname will be exactly the same. Am i right in this assumption? Have you any advice for me? Thanks Antonino

Fields not showing in openmetrics statistics

However, I pointed out that the docs about this setting is somewhat misleading -- it's used to limit any potential memory leaks for long-lived processes by ensuring it terminates periodically. I read this and thought to myself "this is a good thing to do", without realizing that it would have the opposite effect as lingering clients could delay service termination indefinitely. The side effect is many new processes are spawned to handle new clients, and eventually the maximum process limit is reached, and chaos ensues. So for services like imap-login and others that can have lingering clients, the only sensible values for service_limit is {0,1}. If you set service_limit>1, the asymptotic behaviour is like service_limit=1, and process_limit would have to be adjusted accordingly. The docs can explain this rather wordy and subtle explanation of service_limit, or service_limit can be constrained to values {0,1} so that others don't blunder along the same path I did. My description of problem https://www.mail-archive.com/dovecot%40dovecot.org/msg85850.html Your situation is slgihtly different (service not imap_login, and idle_kill timeout should reduce lingering processes that caused my problem), but try setting service_limit to either 0 or 1 and see if your problem goes away, or gets worse. You can also see how many file descriptors are being held by the config process, and see the behaviour over time (e.g. monitor /proc/{pid}/fd/*); maybe that will give you a clue as to what the config process is doing. Slow IMAP SORT

The following IMAP SORT with 2 sort criteria is very slow on an mdbox mailbox with lots of mails (more than 10,000) and an empty cache: . SORT (ARRIVAL DATE) UTF-8 ALL Each mail is opened when the SORT is executed, which is slow, given the number of mails in the mailbox. Debug: Mailbox INBOX: UID 1003: Opened mail because: header stream <repeated for each mail> Repeating the SORT opens all mails again and again: Debug: Mailbox INBOX: UID 1003: Opened mail because: header stream <repeated for each mail> If I just sort by ARRIVAL, the SORT is fast and I don't see any "Opened mail because" messages in the debug log. . SORT (ARRIVAL) UTF-8 ALL If I just sort by DATE, the first SORT is slow. . SORT (DATE) UTF-8 ALL The debug log looks like this: Debug: Mailbox INBOX: UID 1003: Opened mail because: header Date (Mail has other cached fields, reset_id=1633683216) <repeated for each mail> This fills the cache and if I sort by DATE again, the SORT is fast and I don't get any more "Opened mail because" messages in the debug log. If I now repeat "SORT (ARRIVAL DATE)", the SORT is fast, the mails are not opened. If I clear the cache, "SORT (ARRIVAL DATE)" goes back to being slow, not filling the cache. This doesn't seem right. "SORT (ARRIVAL DATE)" should also fill the cache to execute repeated SORTS faster, right?

convert mdbox to maildir

Hi! We need to move all users from one (pretty old) installation of dovecot to a new one. The old one uses mdbox for users' mailboxes and maildir for shared/public mailboxes. The new one must be maildir only. I believe that I can just copy the shared/public maildir structure to the new installation without problems. Am I right? Do I have to expect any trouble? (Set owner, permissions etc...) The real problem is that we must not use the running, old dovecot installation. So we are not able to connect to the old server, pull all folders and mails and create a new maildir structure. Currently, we can't do anything against it. What we get are the users' mdbox files. Is there any way to convert mdbox files and structures to maildir directly from filesystem? Or do we have to build a copy of the old machine (dovecot only, or -maybe better- a vm) and then use doveadm backup? Or is it ok to just set up the completely new installation, set mail_location to where the new Maildirs will be, like maildir:~/Maildir and then run something like doveadm backup mdbox:/tmp/$user/mdbox -u $user? Will this transfer all mails and folders or do we have to keep an eye on some specific things? I thank you very much and cheers! -lutzn

mdbox: purge only if it's worthwhile

Hi, with the mdbox storage one needs to regularly run purge to really clean up deleted mails from the storage. Running purge can be an IO intensive task as the files are append-only and even if in a 10 MB mdbox file only a small mail is deleted all other mails need to be copied to a new file. Therefore, I wonder whether there is the option to apply a threshold before a mdbox file is cleaned up, e.g. only purge an old mail if this affects > 10% of the mdbox filesize or if at least X bytes will be freed in an mdbox file. Is this possible ATM? Otherwise this can be seen as a feature request. Best, Sven PS: From the docs it's unclear to me how the mdbox rotating algorithm works. Is only to the latest mdbox file appended or it is possible that a small mail might be appended to an older mdbox file?

pre-define or alter list of IMAP keywords

I am using Dovecot 2.3.4.1 with sdbox and mostly Thunderbird on Linux and FairEmail on Android as IMAP clients. I use a defined set of IMAP keywords to allow different users to mark and filter their mails based on keywords. That works pretty well but I stumble across an issue from time to time: In TB I can pre-define a list of keywords which the user can choose one from. FairEmail shows all those keywords Dovecot presents - there is nothing like the list in TB. Issue 1: If there are no mails flagged in a folder, Dovecot doesn't present any keywords and therefore FairEmail shows none - the user has to remember and type in the correct keyword. Issue 2: After some time FairEmail shows a huge list of keywords for the INBOX, even keywords not in use for quite some time. To get rid of these keywords I deleted the index files on Dovecot (which with sdbox are not meant to be deleted?). It seems, Dovecot caches the keywords in the index files. Question: 1) Is there a way on Dovecot to define a list of keywords Dovecot presents to the IMAP clients? 2) If not, is there a nicer way to clean the keyword lists from old entries not assigned to any mail in that folder? -- Cheers spi

Sieve rule for whitelisting domains after spam processing

Hello, My mail server has a global Sieve rule defined in sieve_before to file messages classified as spam by spamassassin into the Spam folder: require ["regex", "fileinto", "imap4flags"]; if allof (header :regex "X-Spam-Status" "^Yes") { fileinto "Spam"; } This works great, except I'd like the ability to whitelist certain senders or domains whose emails end up in Spam, usually due to a misconfigured SPF DNS TXT record or something like that. I use Roundcube as my Webmail client, so the easiest way to whitelist would be to create a rule for each domain directly in Roundcube using its built-in Sieve integration to move legitimate messages out of the Spam folder. I already have several rules set up to flag and sort non-spam messages, and they're working fine. When I receive an email from good-domain.com that's classified as Spam by spamassassin, the global rule sends it to the Spam folder and it is not re-filed into the Inbox. Greetings, We've had a longstanding problem with emails not being copied to the Sent folder that seems to be a bug with various email clients (Thunderbird, TypeApp.) I know that Dovecot has the option to use the Submission service to copy emails to Sent without using SMTP to do this. Would this solve the problem we've seen over the years of emails not being copied to the Sent folder on various clients under certain (unknown) conditions? Thanks for your insight here. Asai

Anyway, placing it in /etc/ssl/certs and restarting dovecot does not change anything for the client, as expected. Hi everyone, I'm trying to setup dovecot to accept only client certificates created with a private CA: auth_ssl_require_client_cert = yes ssl_verify_client_cert = yes ssl_ca = </etc/ssl/CA_Certificate_CRL_bundle.pem At the same time, dovecot is setup with an SSL certificate created by a public CA (let's encrypt): ssl = required ssl_cert = </etc/ssl/fullchain.pem ssl_key = </etc/ssl/key.pem When I try to connect to the server with a client (evolution), I get a connection error: "Client did not present valid SSL certificate" except that it is valid. As you probably already know, let's encrypt does not create client certificates. It seems that using a different CA for client certificates and for the server certificate is unsupported. rawlog data in a lua script

Hi, I'm searching for a possibility to have the rawlog feature in lua, which would be much easier for processing. Currently Dovecot, when activating rawlog for a user, writes everything to disk (which creates I/O), and I have to somehow read it from there. That's a bit complicated, because I have to get notified via inotify or similar when there are new files created, and then I have to start a "tail" or "epoll" mechanism on the files to get the contents in more or less real time (IMAP sessions can be multiple hours or days). It would be much easier to hook to the "raw request and response events" inside Dovecot and have the rawlog-data in a lua script, where I can prepare it and send it to another maschine for monitoring/collection/analysis/statistics or similar, for example via HTTP. Having the rawlog data available in lua would make things a lot easier. Is there any possibility at the moment to create a lua script and "hook" to those "request and response events"? If not, would it be possible to add that feature in the future? Kind regards Michael

In order to change the password scheme I wrote a script named updateproxy that needs the plain text password from the user. To get that I use the line password_query = SELECT username as user, password, \ '%w' as userdb_plain_pass FROM auth_user WHERE username='%n' This works nicely with almost all passwords but not with this one 1234567%&/abcd the error message being dovecot: Failed to expand plugin setting plain_pass = '1234567%&/abcd': Unknown variable '%&' It seems to me that dovecot tries to do another level of variable evaluation upon the **value** of the already evaluated variable. So I searched for ways to escape problematic characters like % and changed my line to password_query = SELECT username as user, password, \ '%E{w}' as userdb_plain_pass FROM auth_user WHERE username='%n' but this produces problems with password values containing quotes. So how can I get a plain text password containing any ascii char (or even better any utf-8 char) safely to my script? Dovecot-lda mysql look ups.

Hallo again. Dovecot is not doing a look up for the MailDirLoc in the mysql database after postfix hands over the mail to dovecot-lda. Postfix knows the right location # postmap -q user(a)domain.net mysql:/etc/postfix/Mail-Mailbox.cf domain.com/user/ But apparently this has not worked as intended since I moved from courier to dovecot some years back. The minute I change /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf postfix starts spitting SASL authentication errors. How can I make Dovecot-LDA query the DB in that file for the delivery location (userdb_mail)? With creating x.y.z you really create only folder z and a folder hirarchy x.y, in which you can not store emails (nor have any access). i'm running dovecot 2.3.19.1 search indexing is enabled, via fts_flatcurve (dovecot23_fts_flatcurve) attachment processing is via fts_tika, with tika-server-standard-2.4.2 backend & tesseract5 OCR i'm working getting this optimized on a smaller, 4-core server that opt includes capping tesseract @ single-thread, Environment=OMP_THREAD_LIMIT=1 still, some attachments are OCR-scanned, and can take some time. when i exec large reindex jobs, i get occassional timeout errors on dovecot's indexer-worker connection to tiks backend, e.g., 2022-07-23 09:54:43 indexer-worker(postmaster(a)example.com)<DIcjEWb922JhXAAA+IOfAw>: Error: fts_tika: PUT http://127.0.0.1:9998/tika/ failed: Request timed out (Request queued 61.031 secs ago, 1 send attempts in 60.103 secs, 60.080 in http ioloop, 0.000 in other ioloops, connected 60.103 secs ago) 2022-07-23 09:54:43 indexer-worker(postmaster(a)example.com)<DIcjEWb922JhXAAA+IOfAw>: Error: Mailbox Sent: Precache for UID=90782 failed: Internal error occurred. Hi! I want to use a sqlite database in readonly mode, which I found mentionend in the docs [1]. Unfortunately no examples were given, so I tried to infer the usage by inspecting core/driver-sqlite.c. If I interpret it correctly, this should have worked: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf.ext: driver = sqlite connect = readonly=yes /var/vmail/virtual.sqlite user_query = #... Unfortunately, dovecot tries to open a file named "readonly=yes /var/vmail/virtual.sqlite" instead. I have no idea why the option is not parsed. Is this a bug or am I using the feature incorrectly? Hi all, I use a Dovecot IMAP server on my Linux desktop computer, and I'm pretty good at writing shellscripts. Is there any way I could use doveadm or other tools to create a report that shows all my folders in a hierarchy? Also, is there a way to show only those with new mail? Tracing Sieve actions

I encountered an interesting problem that one originator was being dumped into the Deleted file directly by my sieve. The sieve file was quite large and it was not obvious which entry was causing the issue. I recall there was a way to get sieve-test to show what is going on and which lines it used, but I could not replicate it tonight for anything. I ended up having to change all the deliver to the Deleted files to something else and test one at a time to find the offending entry. It took a long time. How do you get sieve-test to show the actual path it took through the file? -- Doug

Interfacing mutt with Dovecott

Hi all, All my email for the past 20 years is held on a Dovecot IMAP server (version 2.3.19.1 (9b53102964)) on my desktop. I've been using Claws-Mail but want to switch to Mutt. In the past I've tried this, but Mutt was unreliable in reading folders from my local Dovecot server. It didn't see a lot of the folders. I know some people have been very successful running Mutt to access an IMAP server, so it appears to be possible. How should I run Mutt to access my Dovecot? Also, in the past I've used Claws-Mail to admin my Dovecot folders (make new folders, move folders, etc). I've heard there are one or more Dovecot provided tools to do this kind of admin. Deleting "folders only" folder doesn't actually delete

Hi, I'm using dovecot-2.3.17.1-1.fc34.x86_64 on fedora34 and Thunderbird 91 on fedora35. When creating a folder of type "folders only" in Thunderbird, then trying to delete it, it doesn't actually delete it from the filesystem. Is this a permissions problem? Or perhaps a Thunderbird problem? I don't see any messages in the logs that would indicate some type of failed attempt to delete. How do I troubleshoot this? Thanks, Alex

i'm running dovecot 2.3.19.1 + fts_tika for attachment scanning, with tika-server 2.4.1 submitting a PDF attachment DIRECTLY to tika, via curl, there's no issue -- scan's OK on mail receipt in dovecot, the attachment is submitted to tika via fts, but scanning fails with a 'corrupt stream' ERROR. i've posted the issue, with details here, @ tika ML, https://lists.apache.org/thread/pztsq8tb8xqz3s4kmjpnt9p3zt07y05k where it's suggested the message may be getting truncated since direct-via-curl doesn't truncate, it seems that the submission process -- via fts plugin -- is a possiblity. can anyone confirm PDF attachment scan in a similar config, with latest versions? or suggest what diagnostic to use to dig for further, relevant troubleshooting info in dovecot+fts?

Hi, I'm using ubuntu 22.04 and installed dovecot 2.3.16. I did some initial testing with 100 email accounts and everything seemed to work perfectly the same as dovecot version 2.3.16 on another server. Is multi factor authentication practical/feasible?

I have a small client whose insurance company insists they have MFA for their email to be covered under some kind of data protection policy. Currently I have the client set up on a Debian box for the email server coupled with roundcube for webmail. Most the users just use roundcube but some also use their mobile devices to check email. Maybe one person uses outlook. There’s about 5 to 10 users total. I know roundcube offers a MFA plugin. But I don’t have the foggiest idea how of an iPhone, Android device, or Outlook could all be set up to work with MFA with a standard dovecot/postfix setup. Are there any practical solutions for easily implementing MFA that could work across multiple devices?

Thunderbird / Copy to Send folder times out

I know this has been asked before in both Dovecot & Thunderbird Forums (i will posting this info there as well) It seems every once in a while that copy to sent folder timeout occurs and you have to hit retry a few time for it to complete I know this is a network issue (ie network speed, congestion etc does cause an issue) That being said is there an imap timeout variable that would addres this issue and or does anyone know about a thunderbird variable I have been unable to locate anything specific to this issue and am aware that we probably need to patch both sides? ideas anyone ?? -- Happy Thursday !!! Hey all. We've got some users that live on our primary email server (which lives in our internal network) that we need to migrate to a second email server (which lives in our DMZ). Both servers serve our domain, example.com, but our first email server runs UW-IMAP, while our newer second server is running dovecot. We need to get these users cleanly migrated over, with all of their emails, and we're trying to do so with the doveadm backup tool - figuring that it will probably "do" Dovecot better than a generic IMAP to IMAP tool. When creating a folder of type "folders only" in Thunderbird, then trying to delete it, it doesn't actually delete it from the filesystem. Is this a permissions problem? Or perhaps a Thunderbird problem? Are you using MBOX backend? I think I ran across this problem and it's some confusion as to whether the target is a file or directory. I was finally able to delete it by appending '/' to the name of the folder in my mail reader, but some mail readers do not allow you to type the mailbox name to delete. Hi Folks, The man page for doveadm-sync says that the final argument is the destination to which files will be written. But the example later in the man page says the opposite. Under 'Conversion' I read: ``` Assuming that the mail_location setting in /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-mail.conf is set to: mail_location = mdbox:~/mdbox, a logged in system user may convert her/his mails from its Maildir in her/his home directory to the mdbox mailbox format. The user has to execute the command: doveadm sync maildir:~/Maildir ``` which has the destination in /etc/dovecot/conf.d and the _source_ as the final argument to doveadm sync. It seems on trying it, that the example doesn't work. To convert from, say mbox to Maildir, I had to do: doveadm backup 'maildir:~/Maildir:LAYOUT=fs' with /etc/dovecot containing mail_location = mbox:~/Mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/indices/%u Even this didn't work properly for me. All the messages from all the mboxen in ~/Mail ended up in ~/Maildir/cur and the other mailboxes ended up with empty cur/ and new/ directories under ~/Maildir/xxx/ Dovecot version 2.3.19.1 (9b53102964) installed from Debian sid on x86_64. Home directories are NFS mounted. I don't think the rest of the config is relevant. -- Peter Chubb

Other than the error there doesn’t seem to be any other effect/ Ideas? -- Didn't pay my exorcism bill, got repossessed.

Trouble configuring managesive plugin for roundcube

Hello all! I’ve got a bit of a problem that I would like some help with. So, I have two servers, one is my mail server running postfix, dovecot etc. I have a second server setup as my roundcube server. Both servers are running on the same LAN network. I have sieve scripts setup in dovecot in my mail server and they are working great! My trouble is that I can’t seem to make my roundcube talk correctly to managesieve on my mail server. Dovecot documentation does not advise against the use of passdb definitions which have the same driver and args settings. One such configuration would be where an administrator wishes to use the same pam configuration or passwd file for both normal and master users but use the username_filter setting to restrict which of the users is able to be a master user. Risk: If same passwd file or PAM is used for both normal and master users, it is possible for attacker to become master user. Workaround: Always authenticate master users from different source than regular users, e.g. using a separate passwd file. User authentication / activity log

I'm on 2.3.19.1 (9b53102964) running on FreeBSD, if it matters. I have a set of maintenance "things" that I want to have happen if someone does not authenticate against Dovecot (to check mail) after some period of time. I was running the Z-Push exchange server, which (as its in PHP) made sticking an "you were here" flag in the user's filesystem easy, which of course means checking it is easy since the modification time on the file is sufficient. I was looking for something similar that I could use with Dovecot and my first thought was the cache or index files, but as it turns out local delivery (I'm running Postfix) updates those, so they're not left alone if no client is connected. I also don't see anything appropriate in the syslog that dovecot dumps into there I can scan for on a sign-in. My auth mechanism is "straight" login, no LDAP or similar, and I use pam as the mechanism. I don't see anything in the auth.log file or dovecot's logs. My authentication section for dovecot is pretty-basic: auth_mechanisms = login disable_plaintext_auth = yes passdb { args = session=yes dovecot driver = pam } protocols = imap Does Dovecot maintain something that I can reasonably find in the filesystem for this? A perusal of the documentation doesn't appear to show anything directly pertinent -- but I may have missed it. It appears that the event export capacity might be able to do this but I'm confused on how to set it up; what would be very useful is if, for each user, the log point could be different (e.g. in their home directory) and if it allowed overwriting (thus becoming an activity flag, basically.) Case sensitivity and unicode normalisation on ZFS for Dovecot Maildir

I'm wondering about some filesystem considerations when using Dovecot. I've read https://wiki.dovecot.org/FileSystems, but that basically talks about low-level details. My question is not about that. I use the following mail_location: maildir:~/maildir:LAYOUT=fs:INBOX=~/maildir/INBOX:UTF-8 In this setup, because I use LAYOUT=fs and UTF-8, the IMAP names are identical to the directory names. I noticed that the INBOX name is case-insensitive, but all other names are case-sensitive. I wonder if it's possible to have consistent behaviour here. Now since I use ZFS, I have the ability to make the filesystem case insensitive and to normalise unicode codepoints. Is that something that would be useful when running a Dovecot server, or would that be a bad idea?
