[Dovecot] Question about indexes and maildir/sdbox/mdbox

Hello We are now running dovecot 2.0.9 with indexes in a ram disk and maildir storage in a test system. We have the following questions: - If there is a power outage / kernel crash, we will lose the content of ramdisk. We have tested that indexes are regenerated when a user logs in via imap, so e-mail access will be "slower" after a power outage / kernel crash, but everything should work as expected (TM). Are we missing something? - We are evaluating migrating from maildir to dbox. There are two alternatives: sdbox and mdbox. Reading about dbox in the wiki (http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/dbox) we see that using a ram disk for indexes for mdbox is a really bad idea: /"Note that with dbox the Index files actually contain significant data which is held nowhere else. Index files for both *single-dbox* and *multi-dbox* contain message flags and keywords. For *multi-dbox*, the index file also contains the map_uids which link (via the "map index") to the actual message data. This data cannot be automatically recreated, so it is important that Index files are treated with the same care as message data files."/ So in mdbox we should not use a ramdisk for indexes. But what about sdbox? sdbox indexes work as maildir indexes? Are sdbox indexes bigger than maildir indexes? Thank you very much for your support Regards Javier

OK, so I decided to go ahead and just upgrade to the latest 1 series Dovecot and see if that solves my ACL/config issues I've been having. (I tried compiling 2.0.9, but it errored out and I assume that's because it's a pretty old machine/compiler.) Anyway, 1.2.16 compiled fine, and I installed it in another location from the currently running 1.1 series install. I have this new install running (IMAP) on a non-standard port while I test it out, and it starts fine and all seems well. However, I'm wondering, is it OK to run it and have it look at the same Maildir mailboxes as the currently running 1.1 series install? Does that have the potential to mess with indexes or change anything in a bad way? (FWIW, I tried it briefly, and after changing the port number in and restarting my mail client [Thunderbird], it had trouble pulling up the mailbox I was trying to access.) David

Hi all, I have virtual mailboxes set up as "Smart Folders" to show me messages tagged with certain keywords. For example: # ~/Maildir-virtual/fwp/dovecot-virtual File MailingLists/* KEYWORD @fwp Messages get picked up from the File mailbox, but not for the sub-mailboxes inside the MailingLists mailbox. What am I doing wrong? Wrong separator? And how can I debug this? Everything else is working fine. Thanks a lot! Paul

[Dovecot] vpopmail disabled services fix

I noticed that disabling services using vpopmail was not being recognized by dovecot. Using "vmoduser -swip user(a)domain.com" should disable all services, but both pop and imap logins were still allowed. After a bit of digging in the code and confirming with a few debug lines, it appears that lines 38 and 52 of src/auth/passdb-vpopmail.c are the issue (dovecot 2.0.8). These two lines do a strcmp on request->service. It appears that request->service is in lower case, but the comparison values are in upper case. Either updating the values to lowercase or using strcasecmp should fix the issue. We're using Dovecot v1.2.15 LDA/IMAP/POP3+MySQL with quota plugin, quota_rule per-user size, quota_exceed_message and quota_warning on storage=90%%.with script. Everything is working as expected. But I've been asked to configure it the way, that when a user gets message, which would make his maildir over quota limit, notification go not only to sender, but also to postmaster(a)domain.com. Browsed wiki, mailinglist archive - couldn't find anything on that. Is there a way to implement such feature? And what about possibility to send a message to user, notifying him about rejected email "from: xxx(a)yyy.com" with "subj: blah blah" due to full mailbox? Such messages are small and would not take too much space. Thus the user would know what he misses, urging him to clean his mailbox. Thank you in advance. -- Karolis

[Dovecot] [PATCH] auth: Fixed mech_winbind_ntlm by using mech_winbind_auth_initial()

Hi folks, attached is a trivial patch which is fixing Winbind/NTLM authentication in dovecot 2.0 series. The patch was made against 2.0.8 sources, but there should be no problem applying it onto HEAD, because 'src/auth/mech-winbind.c' wasn't touched for quite some time now ;) I tested the patch with a dovecot 2.0.8 running on linux, authenticating against a WindowsServer 2008R2 Enterprise using ntlm_auth/winbind (from current stable samba 3.5.6). I successfully tested NTLM authentication for IMAP and POP3 (with and without STARTTLS) using following MUAs for the test: - Thunderbird 3.1.7 (Linux X86-64) - Outlook Express 6.00 (Windows XP Pro Qemu-KVM) Cheers, Chris Patch Description: In changeset 9002 a new function named mech_winbind_auth_initial() was introduced, but only the mech_winbind_spnego module part was changed to finally use this function. The mech_winbind_ntlm module part was not properly adapted which leads to a non functioning NTLM authentication mechanism while using winbind, because it will never call the `ntlm_auth` helper. The simple fix is to replace mech_generic_auth_initial() with mech_winbind_auth_initial() as auth_initial "hook" when setting up the mech_winbind_ntlm module, like it is done in the mech_winbind_spnego module. Dear all, I have postfix delivering to dovecot lda (via spamassinassin). I have configured the quota plugin, but it does not seem to respect the details in the quota table in mysql. I would like to have the email in the new/cur directories setup to be read only, is there a way to do this in dovecot 2.0.8. [Dovecot] Rename public folders

I've got a number of public mailboxes configured for my users. We pretty much have to use Entourage for a client, which insists on creating all new subfolders with the name 'Untitled Folder'. When they try to rename these subfolders with useful names, Dovecot returns A028 NO [CANNOT] Renaming not supported across non-private namespaces. I guess this is because renaming a subfolder could potentially break subscriptions for other users? Or is it a hard requirement from IMAP RFC? If the former, is the problem merely very complicated, but eventually fixable, or is it just intractable? We're using Dovecot 2.0.7 from the atrpms RPM, Redhat EL 5.0. Interesting since imap_acl also makes dovecot segfault. Maybe there is a problem in the way Dovecot loads plugins? [Dovecot] Can I get rid of the fchown log messages?

Hi, Since upgrading dovecot version (from somewhat ancient to 1.2.16), I see messages in the logs like these: Jan 15 00:55:17 srv0303 dovecot: POP3(obm03): fchown(/home/obm/obm03/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.tmp, -1, 8(mail)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=1033(obm), group based on /var/mail/obm03) I know that this is because the mailbox in /var/mail has ownership username:mail. However, in this setup this is intentional, and quota-related (quota on inbox is enforced by Exim, not Dovecot, and kernel does group-quota but not for group mail). Also, group read rights for group mail are intentional. >From what I read on this list, it has something to do with shared folders. I did not (at least it wasn't my intention) configure users' inboxes as shared folders. So, is there a way to disable these log messages, or, to disable Dovecot's attempts to try to change the owner/group of the index/cache/log files when these are inside the user's private ~/mail folder? More specifically, is there a way to do this without changing anything to users' inbox permissions? Thanks, Maarten

After installing dovecot 2.0.8 (just updated to 2.0.9) I installed the fts plugin 2.0.9 and get several seconds after reloading dovecot segfaults. I've checked my setup - the guest is not set to sync with the VMware host. NTP is running with local clock server commented out & 'tinker panic 0' set. It sounds like this is not a Dovecot issue so I'll stop posting to this list now and seek help elsewhere. What negative effects to Dovecot would I expect to see where the system clock is constantly changing?

I'm working on a web based software that provides a simple webmail ( http://modoboa.org/) I'm wondering what would an efficient way to detect if a message (or a group of messages) has attachments. OK, so I decided to go ahead and just upgrade to the latest 1 series Dovecot and see if that solves my ACL/config issues I've been having. (I tried compiling 2.0.9, but it errored out and I assume that's because it's a pretty old machine/compiler.) Anyway, 1.2.16 compiled fine, and I installed it in another location from the currently running 1.1 series install. I have this new install running (IMAP) on a non-standard port while I test it out, and it starts fine and all seems well. However, I'm wondering, is it OK to run it and have it look at the same Maildir mailboxes as the currently running 1.1 series install? Does that have the potential to mess with indexes or change anything in a bad way? (FWIW, I tried it briefly, and after changing the port number in and restarting my mail client [Thunderbird], it had trouble pulling up the mailbox I was trying to access.) David

Hi, I was trying out Kerberos authentication with som sample users for Dovecot and stumbled into this problem: The user names are of the form local-part@domain, so the Kerberos principal becomes "local-part\@domain@REALM". But it seems Dovecot (1.2.9) doesn't understand that syntax. Looking at the 2.0.8 sources I guess it's not supported. But isn't this a valid Kerberos principal? Is it a bug, or a missing feature or is there a special reason for not supporting it ? kind regards, Peter

Does that error just basically mean something's set wrong somewhere in dovecot.conf? David

[Dovecot] Denying authentication

Hello, I've been running dovecot for over 3 years now and it works with no problems. I have it setup so that it authenticates users against Active Directory via LDAP and so far no problems. What I would like to know is if there is any way that I could deny access for users trying to access email via cellphones or email clients outside the company. I can close everything since there are a few users that need to get emails from outside the company via cell phone of email clients. I was thinking if there was a way to lets say create a group in AD named: "remote-email" that will allow connection and authentication from any network, any user not in that group will only be able to authenticate if the source is 192.168.xx.xx/24. Is this possible? Maybe not with Dovecot, but maybe someone else has any ideas..? Thanks -------- Romer Ventura

[Dovecot] Making shared folders "unmovable"

I have set up an area of shared folders with Dovecot 1.2 that is accessed by several people (by way of one account, and everyone who logs in sees these same folders), and the only problem with this setup is that occasionally somebody moves one of the folders underneath another folder or somewhere else in the folder structure, and this sometimes disrupts some automatic procmail filters and the like. Is there a way to keep folders in a shared setup such as this "static" or "unmovable" so that the users can't disrupt the structure? Like, where the folder structure itself can't be changed, but new messages can still come in to the folders? David

[Dovecot] How do folk . . . Aggregate system mail from LAN machines?

List, good evening, Running Dovecot for external email, but not yet worked out how (best) to aggregate 'system' mail from other machines on the LAN. By system mail, I mean mails generated by the OS or by applications, and addressed to root, or 'some admin user', etc. Ideally, these would be seen by 'root' or 'some admin user' or whoever on our existing Dovecot/IMAP system. Our scale is not large, we only have 5 servers on the LAN doing various things. I wondered how other Dovecot users do this. I've thought of 3 possibilities: 1. Install Dovecot on each LAN machine, and use Fetchmail to retrieve the messages using POP so that local mail stores were emptied. 2. Perhaps, use a 'forwarding' mechanism of some sort on each LAN machine, but that would require an MTA on each LAN machine, would it not? 3. I wondered whether /etc/alias, mentioned in a recent post by Simone Caruso, might help though again, presumably, requiring an MTA on each LAN machine. What do you do? regards, Ron

Hi all, storing e-mails (using postfix) via dovecot-lda fails and I assume this is related with a auth_socket configuration problem.
