Hi folks. I'm VERY new to Dovecot and Sieve. But I'm having an issue that I need help with. For some reason my sieve daemon won't allow people to log on. I have dovecot set to read information from a MySQL table, and that works fine. I can login to dovecot's imap server just fine. But I have SOGo for the webmail and it won't login to the sieve daemon. Ability to reject invalid client certificate at TLS handshake time

Hi, After a bit of struggling I've been able to set up TLS client certificate authentication with Dovecot for both IMAP and Submission. Users are required to present a valid certificate, cool so far! What I noticed however on non-StartTLS listeners IMAPS (993) and SMTPS (465), is that during the TLS handhake presenting a valid client certificate is seemingly optional and is only checked later at time of protocol-level login (external auth in my case). I'd like to change that for security purposes and also a bit of obscurity. Not having the ability to interact with Dovecot on protocol level lowers the attack vector as well as the ease of checking my network security. Also, it would prevent (anonymous) network scanners to easily detect what kind of service is running on the port as they can see the IMAP/SMTP banner without presenting a valid TLS client certificate currently. Is it possible in any version of Dovecot to configure it to set up a TLS server listening context that requires a handshake with a valid client certificate? I'm using Dovecot 2.3.4.1 (actual Debian Buster version 2.3.4.1-5+deb10u6), but willing to upgrade to any newer version when this is offered. Going through some newer revisions changelog this seems not the case, so I didn't spend time on upgrading yet. What imap ssl/auth settings work best with MS Outlook?

I repeatedly have a hell of a time getting clients' Outlook software working well with Dovecot. It's hard for me to test myself since I don't have Outlook and it would be impossible to keep up with all the different versions anyway. I've got the following settings, currently: disable_plaintext_auth = yes auth_username_format = %Ln auth_mechanisms = plain login ssl = yes service imap-login { # inet_listener imap { # port = 143 # } inet_listener imaps { port = 993 ssl = yes } } service imap { client_limit = 1 } It always seems to be hit or miss with outlook as to which encryption setting to use, which port to try, etc. With a recent client, I couldn't get them successfully logged in no matter what manual settings we tried. If someone can give me some tips on how to get most versions of Outlook cooperating well with Dovecot, I'd appreciate it.

Folks, I am still trying to get help here. Let me re-state what is going on. I have a webmail program (SOGo) that connects to the Dovecot sieve system to handle things like mail filters and what not. That way dovecot's lda program can move things where they belong. So I went through the config files, and found the places where I need to enable sieve (this is in Gentoo Linux, by the way). Now, when dovecot starts I do see a listener on the sieve port on localhost: #netstat -tl | grep sieve tcp 0 0 localhost:sieve 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN And when I telnet to the port, it does connect. But it doesn't say much. telnet localhost sieve Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. 220 jupiter.newideatest.site Dovecot ready. Yet every example I see online is showing a HECK of a lot more than this. So what's up? Anyone got any idea what I did wrong? I've put the 90-sieve.conf file on my web server at www.newideatest.site/90-sieve.conf for those who want to see it. If any other config files are wanted/needed to help figure this out, let me know what they are and I'll take care of it. Using dovecot-2.3.14-1.fc33.x86_64 with FreeIPA & Kerberos if a user's password is expired in a web mail login, e.g., with Squirrelmail, the user sees: "Unknown user or password incorrect." Can Dovecot be installed with Postfix and without being behind a web server ? I want a mail service that can only be accessed by POP3(s)/IMAP(s) and not by a web UI. Thanks.

Greetings, I use mutt on Ubuntu to access my IMAP mailboxes, on my Centos email server that runs dovecot. Everything has worked without problems for years. About one week ago, the connection between mutt and dovecot became unstable. Before, I could leave mutt connected for days in a row, no problem. Now, everything still works fine, except... I get every ten minutes I get "connection timed out" in Mutt's status line, and hundreds of messages like Apr 12 16:12:49 SERVERNAME dovecot: imap(ACCOUNTNAME): Logged out in=164 out=757 what puzzles me is that I did not touch anything both on my server and on my desktop, except an "apt-get update" some days before this started. But cannot see how it would be related anyway, nor have I found anything online like this. Any help to understand what happened and fix it is very welcome. Marco

How to omit the DH parameter in v2.3.3+ ( as stated in 'Upgrading Dovecot v2.2 to v2.3' )

Hi, i just finished tuning my dovecot setup after upgrading to 2.3.7.2. I needed to add the "ssl_dh =„ parameter to my config as stated in the online docs at dovecot.org <http://dovecot.org/>. That was no problem and is well documented there and the hint in the log on startup also helped to quickly identify the problem. After that i was curious and read more and did a lot of research. But i just could not find out how to „omit“ the DH parameter as stated in the online docs: https://doc.dovecot.org/installation_guide/upgrading/from-2.2-to-2.3/ <https://doc.dovecot.org/installation_guide/upgrading/from-2.2-to-2.3/> It says : „Since v2.3.3+ DH parameter usage is optional and can be omitted.“ I trried it in different ways. First i disallowed DH on the ssl_cipher_list like it was suggested in the example in this doc. But it will still give Errors on startup/reload of dovecot. Next i tried ssl_dh = that also did not work. I could not figure out how to „omit“ the DH parameter. Is it just my misinterpretation of the config doc? thanks for clarifying Best regards joerg

doveadm sync duplicating emails

I'm upgrading a mail server using postfix 2.9.6 and dovecot 2.0.19 to a new server running postfix 3.4.13 and dovecot 2.3.7.2 (using Maildir format on both sides). I had trouble getting doveadm backup to work for one user, while all the others worked straight away. It would complain about problems on the old server in the Maildir/dovecot* files. I managed to get it to work by removing all the dovecot* files under Maildir for that one user (accepting that this would mean clients having to redownload emails). >From that point, a doveadm backup worked. Using roundcube to look at the new mail server, I could see everything arrived. At this point, some mail generated on the new mail server would go to the new mail server, but all other mail is going to the old mail server. I then tried to use doveadm sync -1R to update the new mail server so the new server contains all the mail from the old server plus the new mail that has been locally delivered. What then happened was that all the new emails delivered to the old server since the backup were copied to the new server, and all the emails that were locally delivered on the new mail server were still there. (So far so good). But I also saw that every email that was on the old server before the backup now appeared twice on the new mail server. Running sync again would mean I had three copies of email. The sync ran quickly - much too quickly for these extra copies to have been sent over the network. It appears that the sync made extra local copies on the new server. I see no errors in logs that can explain things. Looking at the email, the files stored in the cur directories are there multiple times; they have different names, but identical content. Trying "doveadm deduplicate -F user-list ALL" ran quickly and to no effect (where user-list is a file with a list of users). Trying "doveadm deduplicate -F user-list -m ALL" takes 100% cpu and a long time to run and still running right now after 4 hours. Judging by the disk space usage freed up, this is going to take a very long time to complete. Has anybody got any idea what might cause this and what change I should make? Every few days, my mailbox seizes up. No mail come in to my imap clients. I'm running dovecot installed on Debian Bullseye, the dovecot packages are all: 1:2.3.13+dfsg1-1 I am running sendmail and using procmail for local delivery. I suspect, but am not certain, that this may be some locking issue between procmail and dovecot but I have never been able to prove that. The final procmail rule which appends messages to my mailbox looks like this, the trailing ':' causes procmail to use a lockfile: :0: /var/mail/mgrant The locking config lines in 10-mail.conf are commented, but I have also tried uncommenting them, did not help: #mbox_read_locks = fcntl #mbox_write_locks = fcntl dotlock Though sometimes it seems to fix itself after a few hours, the only way I have found to fix this quickly is to manually remove the cache files and restart dovecot: rm ~/mail/.imap/INBOX/* systemctl restart dovecot I am not even sure this is a locking issue. Something definitely gets corrupted though. I do have several IMAP clients hitting the same mailbox (phone, laptop, desktop). On the phone, I run K9 and also the gmail client which talks imap. Also using thunderbird, outlook, and w10 mail, though typically not all at the same time. You could definitely say I am stress testing this setup a bit! Any ideas on how to resolve this? As I continue to test freeipa-server-4.9.3-1, on Fedora 33 with dovecot-2.3.14-1 I've run into the following issues with web mail and Dovecot integration. 1. I followed https://www.freeipa.org/page/Dovecot_IMAPS_Integration_with_FreeIPA_using_S… but I couldn't get web mail to login until I used the suggestion from https://blog.delouw.ch/2017/02/19/integrate-dovecot-imap-with-freeipa-using… and changed logins auth_mechanisms = plain gssapi login which allowed logins of FreeIPA Kerberos users. 2. even with auth_mechanisms = plain gssapi login, I could then no longer login to SquirrelMail webmail with any local Unix (non-Kerberized) users. Live migrating index/control files

Hello, We are running a director-based dovecot cluster where the user's maildir and the indexes/control files are, for legacy reasons, stored on separate NFS-backends, i.e.: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:CONTROL=/mail/control/%1u/%2u/%u:INDEX=/mail/index/%1u/%2u/%u Both ~/Maildir and /mail/{control,index}/ are separate NFS-mounts, and we now want to consolidate all files to the user's home directory instead. The end goal is to stop using NFS altogether. I have devised a four step plan for gradually migrating the index/control files into the user's maildir, on a per-user basis: 1. Kick the user in an attempt to flush the user's index files: `doveadm director kick <username>` 2. Rsync the index/control files into the user's maildir: `rsync -uav /mail/{index,control}/${user:0:1}/${user:0:2}/${user}/ /mail/${user:0:1}/${user:0:2}/${user}/Maildir/;` 3. Update the (redis-based) userdb for the specific user to override mail_location to use the default CONTROL/INDEX locations: `{"mail": "maildir:~/Maildir"}` 4. Kick the user one last time so that they reconnect using the new settings. Unfortunately, after running this for a small batch of users, we recieved a couple reports that their clients had started to resynchronize and redownload their mailboxes, which is exactly what we're trying to avoid. There are no index related error messages related to the few users that reported these issues. From my understanding, clients become confused when the control files are changed or lost (`dovecot-uidlist` and `dovecot-uidvalidity`), so I suspect the kick + rsync + kick procedure is not robust enough for this. Does anyone have any experience with performing such a migration without taking systems offline for the duration? Any suggestions to make this process more transparent for our users, so as to not induce panic when their mailboxes abruptly appear empty? Best regards, Eirik

cannot see my mails

Hi, After a change of server, I cannot see my mails. postfix is OK and I receive emails. If I send emails, with roundcube or thunderbird, I can see these new sent emails. Access rights seems OK. Dovecot with debug trace does not complain. Hi, I installed dovecot on a new up-to-date RHEL8 test system and configured a simple mail_filter plugin which only copies the input back to the output (i.e., the filter does nothing special). On RHEL8 I get the following panic when saving the mail. The Dovecot version that comes with RHEL8 is dovecot-2.3.8-4.el8.x86_64 The mail_filter works correctly on an Ubuntu machine )2.2.33.2- 1ubuntu4.7) Any idea what's causing this panic on RHEL8 and how to fix it? Hi Dovecot community, I would like to share a problem I saw a few days ago. Any comment is highly appreciated. *Steps to reproduce* 0. Version of Dovecot I use is v2.3.11.3. 1. Prepare 2 Dovecot backends: - One backend is used as the source of dsync command. Other backend is used as the destination of the dsync command. - Mailbox format is Maildir. Mail dir of two test accounts is empty. 2. Prepare the test account in the source of dsync: - Send a test message to the test account. For example, I use swaks: swaks --server 127.0.0.1 --port 24 --protocol LMTP --to user1@local - Use doveadm expunge command to clean mail dir of the test account: doveadm expunge -u user1@local mailbox INBOX all 3. Prepare the test account in the destination of dsync: - Log in test account via IMAP then select INBOX first: telnet 127.0.0.1 imap ... s login user1@local 1 ... s select INBOX ... s logout - Then perform dsync: doveadm -o imapc_host=backend2.local -o imapc_port=143 -o imapc_user=user1@local -o imapc_password=1 backup -s '' -R -u user1@local imapc: - Confirm error occurs when using dsync: dsync(user1@local): Info: imapc(backend2.local:143): Connected to 192.168.100.2:143 (local 192.168.100.27:58850) dsync(user1@local): Error: Mailbox INBOX sync: mailbox_delete failed: INBOX can't be deleted. However the transaction log file dovecot.index.log is not rotated when its size exceeds limit. - Because the size of the transaction log file is too big and it is not rotated, I think "out of memory" error will occur when I try to use IMAP SELECT or POP3 STAT command (if the virtual size limit is small enough). - If "size of the transaction log file is increasing continuously" is an issue, what should I do to avoid it or is there any workaround? I understand I should fix the error *Error: Mailbox INBOX sync: mailbox_delete failed: INBOX can't be deleted* first before doing anything next. CA certs for Dovecot-as-client (proxy)

Hi, When using proxy=y, ssl=yes (Dovecot 2.3.13) I consistently get this logged when trying to validate the remote server cert. "Disconnected by server: Connection closed: Received invalid SSL certificate: unable to get local issuer certificate: /C=BE/O=GlobalSign nv-sa/CN=AlphaSSL CA - SHA256 - G2 (check ssl_client_ca_* settings?)" As I read the 2.3.x documentation (and the error logged) Dovecot needs to have the trusted CA cert with ssl_client_ca_file or ssl_client_ca_dir. So, I've tried every combination of putting the cert (and the GlobalSign root CA signing it) in ssl_client_ca_dir and individually and as a bundle in ssl_client_ca_file without luck. But even though I can verify the cert with "openssl s_client -connect" and with "openssl verify", no matter what I put in the ssl_client_ca_* settings it seems Dovecot just ignores it. It does complain though, if I point it to a non-existent file, but not if I just fill the file with invalid cert data which can't be parsed. I end up getting in doubt whether it consults the cert data at all. I'm a bit at loss on how to debug this further, short of running it in gdb. "verbose_ssl" doesn't really say anything about the process of find a CA cert to check with. Have I misunderstood the config? /Peter

systemd timeout on startup after upgrade

Hello *, I have upgraded today a Debian buster (stable) system to bullseye (still testing). After upgrade I did a complete reboot of the VM. Dovecot version changed from 1:2.3.4.1-5+deb10u6 to 1:2.3.13+dfsg1-1 `systemctl start dovecot` now complains Job for dovecot.service failed because a timeout was exceeded. As a workaround I set "TimeoutStartSec=infinity" in dovecot.service. But `systemctl status` now says: Active: activating (start) since Sat 2021-04-17 17:53:58 CEST; 1h 23min ago Dovecot itself is working fine without problems. LMTP accepts new mails and IMAP works. It's just that systemd doestn't notice it running. Any idea what causes this? Dovecot discards mail in a certain situation

Hi all: I'm using Dovecot with Postfix (via LMTP). Because Postfix doesn't de-duplicate recipients, I'm using sieve to drop duplicates, following this recipe: https://serverfault.com/questions/112958/postfix-aliases-and-duplicate-e-ma… A "sieve_before" script contains: require ["duplicate"]; if duplicate { discard; stop; } It works well, except when the recipient is over quota. Hi there, Dovecot 2.3.7 appears to hang when the client sends a long command after enabling the IMAP COMPRESS extension [RFC 4978]. PoC script attached along with the doveconf(1) output. For all 3 releases, without COMPRESS=DEFLATE Dovecot doesn't hang and rightfully sends tagged BAD responses to commands of size >65539 bytes. So while the hanging behavior appears to be a long-standing bug, the fact that's it's now hit at min($imap_max_line_length, 8192) instead of $imap_max_line_length seems to be a regression from somewhere between 2.2.27 and 2.3.4. Quota warning invoked twice when moving messages to Trash folder

(90%). The script runs, and the mailbox sits at about 93%. When moving a handful of messages to the Trash folder, the 100% quota-warning service is invoked. But getting the quota through 'doveadm quota get -u user' yields that same 93% used. I ran strace on the main process that is taking in IMAP commands from the Thunderbird client. Two lines are worth noting from that output: 134 uid store 2311:2312,2314:2317 +Flags (\\Seen)\r\n", 3619 137 uid move 2311:2312,2314:2317 \"INBOX.Trash\"\r\n", 3553 The first line sets the "Seen" flag on a list of messages, while the second line moves the messages to the "INBOX.Trash" folder. My guess as to what is happening is when the "uid move" command is received, The messages are copied first, then removed from the server, causing the quota to spike for a very short amount of time. Are those suspicions correct? After looking at RFC 6851, Section 3.3 (Semantics of MOVE and UID MOVE), it states: "Each message included in the set is moved, rather than copied ... ". Any idea why the spike in quota usage occurs? Thanks.

POP3 server fails to replicate deletions

When I delete messages with POP3, the change doesn't get replicated. To reproduce: run the pop3 server from the command line, type this to it: DELE 1 QUIT This correctly deletes the first message on the local server, but it does not send a replication notify message. Poking around a bit with gdb, it appears that the pop3 server decides incorrectly that the changes it is making are not worth notifying about. It is hard to find something that doesn't happen, and I would appreciate suggestions for further debugging this case. I do get the expected replication when new mail arrives and also when I manipulate my mailbox with IMAP. I have tested this with Dovecot 2.3.7.2 (on Ubuntu 20.04) and with the git HEAD, 2.3.14+. What may be the same bug was reported on this list last August against Dovecot 2.3.8, but it got no reply then. My mail store is on a local ext4 file system. Hi, we have some issues related to the fts_enforced option in dovecot config. Following the table in the docs (https://doc.dovecot.org/settings/plugin/fts-plugin/#plugin-fts-setting-fts-…) we cannot figure out the current behavior of the flag. In our case we have dovecot up and running, dovecot indexes updated using doveadm command (fts rescan/index), but solr instance offline for testing. We try to search using header subject. We tried "yes" and "body" fts_enforced flag's options but we get in telnet session: C: a search header subject "test" S: a NO [SERVERBUG] Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. [2021-04-20 15:52:57] (0.005 + 0.000 + 0.004 secs). We aim to achieve the following result: if our solr instance is unavailable, we should switch the imap searches from full-text to headers only. Could you suggest something in this direction? Replication between three servers

Hello, I have dovecot replication working fine between 2 servers with LDA configured to sync mail coming from Postfix. These 2 servers are used in master/slave mode - only the one server is used by IMAP clients and the second server is just a backup in case of failure. Second server is also MX backup and it happens that incoming mails come from it via Postfix and get synchronized with the first server. I would like to include third server as backup. How could be done while mail_replica accepts only one host?

I'm looking at config documentation for solr on dovecot: https://doc.dovecot.org/configuration_manual/fts/solr/ In the suggested solrconfig.xml file (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dovecot/core/master/doc/solr-config-7.7.0…) it has the following line: <luceneMatchVersion>7.7.0</luceneMatchVersion> I'm running solr version 8.8.1, however. I'm wondering if I should change this line to: <luceneMatchVersion>8.8.1</luceneMatchVersion> Things seems to work fine with the 7.7.0 value but there is a comment in the config file that says:  I'm not familiar with Lucene or Solr so I'm uncertain as to what to set this to. Only INBOX is searched when using gmail with dovecot FTS and solr

Hi, I am using https://github.com/docker-mailserver/docker-mailserver to setup my mailserver and added solr for full-text search. Nearly everything is working as expected. But I have a problem with the full-text search, as I have a lot of folders in my mailbox and I just can't find any mail in any of these folders except INBOX when I search with the Gmail android app. After analyzing the logs, I assume, that the bug is in the Gmail app, as it is only searching in the INBOX folder. I searched a bit and found some reports of other users confirming that. As this "design decision" (or bug) is quite old, I assume that Google won't fix it. But as many people are using Gmail, I assume that there must be a way to search all folders with Gmail. Sadly, I haven't found any possibility yet. As a workaround one may put a proxy in between and simply remove the "+box:123" filter from the path (e.g. with a small regex). With that, solr will return all found mails from that user, regardless of the folder. This may be a quite simple, but very dirty hack. Hence, I hope that you guys know a better way, a good way to overcome this issue and enable all Gmail users to search for email in all folders. Best regards, Marcel

altmove reverse doesn't work

I am having troubles with moving emails from alternative storage to primary storage. If I call command like: doveadm altmove -r -u myuser(a)mydomain.yyy ALL it is doing something (it took almost a minute at first time) but there are still emails in alternative storage. There is not reported any error. Auth Cache for checkpassword

Hello, I use the checkpassword driver for imap/pop authentication. To improve the performance I would like to enable authentication caching for it. However just adding the auth_cache_size and auth_cache_ttl doesn't work. No entries are cached. If I add a cache directive in the passdb, then the service doesnt start. I was wondering if the authentication caching is supported for the checkpassword driver. Please point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance, Amol

Tuning pop3-login client_limit

Good day / evening / morning good dovecot people: Overview: We are seeing the following issue on one of our servers: pop3-login: Error: master(pop3): net_connect_unix(pop3) failed: Resource temporarily unavailable - http://wiki2.dovecot.org/SocketUnavailable (client-pid=5418, client-id=1, rip=__REMOVED__, created 534 msecs ago, received 0/4 bytes) We tried tuning the pop3-login -> client_limit parameter. However, as soon as we increased this parameter (and after restarting dovecot), we saw an onslaught of lmtp connection errors in postfix (unable to deliver via lmtp to dovecot). This led us to set the pop3-login -> client_limit back to 1000 again and the lmtp errors disappeared. This leads me to think that we should tune some other parameters as well. Increase overall limits or such. It seems like when increasing the client_limit for pop3-logins that somehow affected the lmtp deliverability. If anyone has any input on this that would be much appreciated. json_parse_number broken by compiler optimization

Hi, the recent Ubuntu (re)builds uncovered an issue with dovecot 1:2.3.13+dfsg1-1 build log: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/529849650/buildlog_ubuntu-hirsute-amd64.dove… A coworker tried 2.3.14 but got the same result. What fails is the json_parser build time test like: test-json-parser.c:161: Assert(#25) failed: null_strcmp(json_output[pos].value, value) == 0 I was looking into that a bit more and what I found is that it is dependent on the new toolchain of gcc 10.2.0-1. Dovecot Team, I need a little help. I came in this morning and it seems like the SSL Certificates expired for dovecot (on an internal mail server) and nobody can move email into their folders on this server. In Thunderbird they just see in the status bar: HISTORY: checking mail server capabilities... Letsencrypt/OpenSSL test - Verify return code: 21

OS: Ubuntu 20.04.2 (on mutli-core VM) Dovecot (Ubuntu default/repo version): 2.3.7.2 (3c910f64b) OpenSSL (Ubuntu default/repo version): 1.1.1f 31 Mar 2020 Reproducing- Run: "openssl s_client -showcerts -connect imap.example.com:993 -servername imap.example.com" (using a diff domain obviously) Produces error: "Verify return code: 21 (unable to verify the first certificate)" (Meaning it is missing a CA verify from what I understand?) The "Verify return code: 21" error ONLY came to my attention after I had a customer complain about adding an email account to an Android phone (using the Google/Gmail default email app). -> "Certificate cannot be trusted" was shown by app when verifying imap connection. I could force it to be used, but this still bothered me, obviously. *The same certificate bundle is also used by smtp/postifx and www/nginx and works just fine. Also the openssl test shows 'verified' on both* I am posting to list mainly because on an older version of Dovecot I have running (default repo version for Ubuntu 18), I do not have this problem shown during testing with openssl. I did not have to change the ssl_cert or ssl_ca value in config. It has identical local.conf settings other than that. Granted it is also an older openssl version, too. So, I feel this may be a bug with Dovecot (or possibly OpenSSL). I finally 'fixed' it myself by using the LE 'fullchain.pem' certificate as the location for the 'ssl_cert' entry (and chain.pem for the ca entry). Previously, it was using the normal cert.pem file location. This is still the way it's setup on the other older machine and still works fine. Greetings, I use mutt on Ubuntu to access my IMAP mailboxes, on my Centos email server that runs dovecot. Everything has worked without problems for years. About one week ago, the connection between mutt and dovecot became unstable. Before, I could leave mutt connected for days in a row, no problem. Now, everything still works fine, except... I get every ten minutes I get "connection timed out" in Mutt's status line, and hundreds of messages like Apr 12 16:12:49 SERVERNAME dovecot: imap(ACCOUNTNAME): Logged out in=164 out=757 what puzzles me is that I did not touch anything both on my server and on my desktop, except an "apt-get update" some days before this started. But cannot see how it would be related anyway, nor have I found anything online like this. Any help to understand what happened and fix it is very welcome. Marco

Yesterday we add LMTP proxying and it works fine, but we have realized that Sieve filters are no longer working after this change. Is it mandatory to add some config to the directors or backends after implementing LMTP through Director? OS: Ubuntu 20.04.2 (on mutli-core VM) Dovecot (Ubuntu default/repo version): 2.3.7.2 (3c910f64b) OpenSSL (Ubuntu default/repo version): 1.1.1f 31 Mar 2020 Reproducing- Run: "openssl s_client -showcerts -connect imap.example.com:993 -servername imap.example.com" (using a diff domain obviously) Produces error: "Verify return code: 21 (unable to verify the first certificate)" (Meaning it is missing a CA verify from what I understand?) The "Verify return code: 21" error ONLY came to my attention after I had a customer complain about adding an email account to an Android phone (using the Google/Gmail default email app). -> "Certificate cannot be trusted" was shown by app when verifying imap connection. I could force it to be used, but this still bothered me, obviously. *The same certificate bundle is also used by smtp/postifx and www/nginx and works just fine. Also the openssl test shows 'verified' on both* I am posting to list mainly because on an older version of Dovecot I have running (default repo version for Ubuntu 18), I do not have this problem shown during testing with openssl. I did not have to change the ssl_cert or ssl_ca value in config. It has identical local.conf settings other than that. Granted it is also an older openssl version, too. So, I feel this may be a bug with Dovecot (or possibly OpenSSL). I finally 'fixed' it myself by using the LE 'fullchain.pem' certificate as the location for the 'ssl_cert' entry (and chain.pem for the ca entry). Previously, it was using the normal cert.pem file location. This is still the way it's setup on the other older machine and still works fine. Changes- |ssl_ca = </etc/letsencrypt/live/{CertName}/chain.pem (or 'fullchain.pem' should work) *ssl_cert = </etc/letsencrypt/live/{CertName}/fullchain.pem* (was 'cert.pem' previously) ssl_key = </etc/letsencrypt/live/{CertName}/privkey.pem| You can also view the problem here for more info : https://superuser.com/a/1640778/47628 Thanks ahead for any insight into this..

I've setup Postfix to Dovecot LMTP delivery with mandatory TLS. Emails are being delivered with TLSv1.3 with no errors. However, setting: verbose_ssl = yes exposes this on each connection: lmtp(405619): Debug: SSL_get_servername() failed What it this mean, and what should I do about it?
