Hi, i never used dovecot so far, but i heard a couple good things about it .. for one the debian maintainer of the exim package recommended it :-) so i want to change our mailserver (currently using ipop3 and uw-imap) to dovecot ... now my boss seems to favour cyrus. i could use some good arguments for dovecot, also your experiences with it and with other mailservers so i can make a reasonable desicion and preset some good arguments :-) Florian

If our symptoms are the same, maybe our setup errors are as well. The problem... while Thunderbird and Outlook are OK, the Inbox doesn't show in Outlook Express. You can click on the Imap Folders button, select the Inbox, click on the "Go To" button and the Inbox will appear until you shut down Outlook Express. Next time you fire up OE, no Inbox. Other than that, it all works as expected. I haven't torture-tested the setup yet though, I wanted to set up one of each client and get the basics running before doing that. Are your symptoms similar? Good Day I am having the following serious problem. I am running CentOS 4.1 with dovecot 0.99.11. The users are using POP3 login to retrieve mail. Hi girls, trying to use the quota and trash plugins with dovecot-1.0-alpha5, but becomes: libquota_plugin.so: undefined symbol: dict_transaction_commit libimap_quota_plugin.so: undefined symbol: quota libtrash_plugin.so: undefined symbol: quota by loading the modules Compiling the source working fine. [Dovecot] Case sensitive nightmare

It took me 4 days to figure this out and I sure hope someone can help me solve it. My Setup: Postfix + MySQL + dovecot dovecot.conf: default_mail_env = maildir:/var/spool/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir password_query = SELECT password FROM mailbox WHERE username='%u' user_query = SELECT maildir, 108 AS uid, 108 AS gid FROM mailbox WHERE username='%u' The virtual host schema is postfix.admin compatible but I¹m not using it (phpMyAdmin is actually easier to use). When foo(a)domain.tld, abrand new account, logs in using an IMAP client (any client; squirrelmail, OE, tbird, Apple...) a maildir is created named domain.tld/foo/Maildir¹ and everything is good. Now I login as Foo(a)domain.tld and then as fOo(a)domain.tld and then as foO(a)domain.tld then so on for every case variation. Each of these accounts can login correctly, they are seen as being the same account by dovecot. On the other hand they are not seen as being the same mailbox! When I check my mail spool I see one maildir for every case variation (domain.tld/foo/Maildir, domain.tld/FOO/Maildir, etc.) It would seem to me that the queries above would fail for the different variations of the name but they don¹t seem to. Is dovecot converting %u to lower case for the query on the virtual users table but then using it unconverted when looking up the Mairdir for the account? If the username column has the value foo(a)domain.tld1 how does SELECT * FROM table WHERE username=¹FOO(a)domain.tld1 match the row? Also puzzling is that I select a column named maildir which has the path to the mailbox in it (using the correct case). Even if SELECT pigs fly¹ AS when WHERE FoO¹=¹foo¹ the maildir path for the account is being returned which is domain.tld/foo/Maildir¹ so how does domain.tld/FoO/Maildir¹ get created? This is both a pain in the nuts support nightmare but also a security problem (albeit fairly limited). An account named ³barneyrubble² could generate a significant number of maildir directories if you logged in with every variation thereof. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

hey friends, I am trying to secure my mail server.I have enabled TLS support in postfix(version postfix-2.1.5), now I am trying to configure squirrelmail(version 1.4.4-1 rpm) for tls/ssl support.In config.php i have choosen use_imap_tls=true and use_smpt_tls=true. [Dovecot] Corrupted index problem when disk quota exceeded

Hi! I should report yet another problem with dovecot index files. Suppose we have a user with his filesystem disk quota exceeded. He logins via POP3 or IMAP to remove some mail messages and fix this problem. When he logins for the first time, everything works fine, and he can read and remove something. But if his disk quota is still exceeded when he logs out, he cannot login any more. I guess it is not fair to give user only one chance to clean his mail folders :) The problem is that dovecot tries to rewrite index files on logout, but it cannot do it correctly because the user's filesystem quota is exceeded. So the next time dovecot just replies "Mailbox is in inconsistent state, please relogin". I believe that dovecot should work with any kind of corrupted index files, this is why I report such kind of bugs here. Hi, As a packager I'd think it would be way cool if the lookup modules that needs to link against external librarires (ldap, pgsql and mysql) could be loaded dynamically at run-time. Am I alone on this? :-)

My linux is Redhat AS3 U3, openssl is 0.9.7a-33 I downloaded dovecot 0.99.14 src rpm and rebuild to binary rpm Everything went smooth but I tried to install the dovecot binary rpm, it reported that openssl need >= 0.9.7f-4 Since there are many other rpm packages have dependency on the current version of openssl 0.9.7a-33, so It's not possible to upgrade openssl to 0.9.7f-4 or greater Is it a must to use openssl 0.9.7f-4 or greater in order to use dovecot 0.99.14 ?

[Dovecot] Order of emails

Hi We have an issue regarding the order in which emails are displayed in an imap folder, which our customers regularly complain about. By default, emails are returned from a folder in the order in which they were placed into the folder, which makes perfect sense. However, if an email is moved into another folder, it will always appear at the top, no matter how old it is. We could order the emails ourselves before displaying them in our webmail program. However, this would mean parsing the headers of every single email, which could be many thousands, so would slow things down considerably and greatly increase load. At the moment, we only read 30 at a time as the user pages through the folder. >From what I can see, the order is determined by the timestamp in the email filename, which gets updated every time the email is moved. Is there any way we could disable this, so the filename (or at least the timestamp part of it) remains constant? If so, would this affect in any way the behaviour of other imap clients, such as Outlook? All suggestions welcome. Hello, there is a little bug in Squirrelmail 1.4.5 or Dovecot 1.0.alpha4-1: the sort is not correct if I use squirrelmail with the option: 10. Allow server thread sort : true 11. Allow server-side sorting : true with the option on false and with Thunderbird 1.5rc1 there is no problem, but I think Thunderbird 1.5rc1 already does the sort by itself. [Dovecot] Update on Using Dovecot with Webmin

First of all thanks for the replies. I have decided to try the updated version 1.0 alpha After uninstalling Dovecot .99 and cleaning up user,groups and files. (Dovecot .99 was authenticating as best I can tell using unix users = the default -- and PAM = the default - I only had to setup the PAM if I remember correctly. Loaded Dovecot 1.0, made sure user, folders and files all seem to be setup correctly. Now - Webmin is able to stop and start Dovecot and it loads fine on reboot. But, it is pretty obvious that the Webmin modual is not up with then new and much more powerful Dovecot config file. For me that is OK, as long it will show weather the service is up or down - stop and start it, which is seems to be doing just fine. The reason I say this is when I try and use the Webmin modual to set user authentication to Standard Unix user database and PAM - it does not work. So I am needing help editing the Dovecot.conf file. My new problem is this: Can not get users to authenticate. I am trying to first setup just unix authentication - with plain text for starters then will move up to more secure. I have left the config file default - just made changes until it would start. With the notable execption I set plain text to yes. I have setup the Dovecot PAM file per the documentation. So what I need help now with is this I am wanting to setup a very simple setup to start with: A setup so that a outlook express client can login, using plain text password, unix login and password POP3 = yes Users = linux/unix (/etc/passwd) Passwords = PAM or Shadow Can anyone send me and edited config file that is setup to for this type of authentication? Or cut from their config file those sections needed for the authentication? Actually, if anyone is willing to share a config file that is setup with a more secure type of authentication that would be great too. (Thinking of switching to Cyrus - have any of you jump off of Cyrus to use Dovecot -- why??) hi I have dovecot (1.0.alpha4-1) installed on a Debian sid amd64 machine (dovecot-imapd and dovecot-common). I am using this so that I can use both Mutt and something like Thunderbird to access my local Maildir folders. Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes when I try to access my mailboxes locally using Mutt, it hangs for a very long time (the bottom of the screen says "Selecting in..." (.in is the mailbox), and eventually gives me a blank mailbox with "(no mailbox)" at the bottom of the screen. In /var/log/mail.err I find lines like the following: Dec 3 06:39:02 localhost dovecot: child 4600 (imap) returned error 83 (Out of memory) Dec 3 06:44:03 localhost dovecot: imap(ric): pool_system_malloc(): Out of memory For example, it was working fine earlier this morning, but now I am unable to access the mailboxes and I'm getting the error messages in /var/log/mail.err. I have the same problem with Thunderbird; it hangs and cannot access the mailboxes. At my office I have dovecot (0.99.14-1) installed on a Debian sarge machine and it works fine. I would appreciate any suggestions as to what to try or what to look for. Hi All, I have Dovecot 1.0 Alpha3 running on x86_64 Linux 2.6 multi-CPU box using Maildir folders. Moving messages from one folder to another in Thunderbird 1.0.7, regardless of their size (usually small), produced error 83, "Out of memory", when both of these parameters were unset (default): mail_read_mmaped, mmap_disable. The log line before the error was pool_system_malloc(): Out of memory. I initially changed mmap_disable to "yes", the error stopped, but it still wasn't moving messages reliably. I then set MM parameters more aggressively: mail_read_mmaped = yes, mmap_disable = no (and the third of the series, mmap_no_write, is left unset). The error stopped popping up, and the moving works speedily. Maybe the default for mail_read_mmaped should be "yes?" Thank you! Sergey.

[Dovecot] Controlling Dovecot with Webmin

Dear Sir I have just setup a Fedora 4SE server, with Webmin - latest production release and Dovecot .99.14. The only way to start dovecot is to be logged into the server as root - locally or ssh, and type the dovecot command. >From Webmin - logged in as ROOT, when I attempt to start Dovecot it tells me that it can't because it can not open the config file - permission denied. This indicates to me that Webmin is not really logged in a "root" but that doesn't seem right since I use root/password when I access the server per the Webmin instructions. Also, in the Webmin configuration for that server - it references a master.pid file. Which did not exist. I tried to create a pid file using the PID (19638) of the Dovecot service. That did not help the start up problem, but I am sure needs to be fixed before I can have the service start on boot up?? I got the PID number after starting Dovecot and then going and seeing the services that where then running. The user/group Dovecot where created during the install. Sendmail is running along with SpamAssassign. When I start Dovecot, logged in as root at shell, everything runs well, email is processed all the way through. Do you know how to resolve this problem of controlling Dovecot through Webmin and making sure the Dovecot will start on reboot of the server. Thank you very much. Lee D. [Dovecot] Dovecot login hangs often

Hi - We have dovecot version : 0.99.11 release : 2.EL4.1 on Centos 4.2, with an LDAP backend (Samba PDC) and pam set to authenticate against LDAP. Dovecot is set to use pam for authentication. It uses mbox, and the machine has very little load (95% idle, no memory pressure). Every 36 hours or so, no users are able to login to imap (we have only imap enabled). Other services that use the same backend are working fine (like squid and ssh logins) even while this is happening. So we are not sure if we can blame this on pam/ldap problems. When this happens, we tried a "service dovecot restart", and that results in saying the "address is in use". About 10 "imap-login" processes seem to lurk around holding on to the imap port. We can get dovecot service to start again, only after a "killall -9 imap-login". What kind of debug should we enable so that you all can diagnose this further ? Any other configuration things that we should try ? We prefer to stay with Redhat/Centos releases, but if this is already reportedly fixed in one of the later builds, we are open to trying one. Hello all, any suggestions on this? It seems like a pretty serious issue and it hasn't reoccurred since we switched back to UW imapd. As I mentioned, it seems to be related to dovecot compiled on Solaris 10/x86... Intended Format will/should be such as: 'timestamp_in_second' user_id remote_ip one user per line. My guess we have all the needed information within dovecot to make such list. But I have seen no way to 'trick' dovecot (dovecot-1.0.alpha3) to do it... Could someone on the list able to give me some advices? I know there is Perl script to scan maillog file and extract information from collected data, but this seem to me 'a kind of the very last option'.... May be the trick can be achieved using 'executable' function? Hi, I found that dovecot have many nice features. Now I write because I'm tring to setup the dovecot server, I would substitute a qpopper daemon (patched for mysql authentication) The problem I find is to set up the pop-before-smtp using sql (mysq) as written in http://wiki.dovecot.org/moin.cgi/PopBSMTPAndDovecot (Waiting for post_login ;-) I would use the script popbsmtp.sh and not a perl pig. (I'm using qpopper patched to store the relay IP in mysql and it works) I set .my.cnf in /root What happen is that the $3 don't contain the IP that should be written to the DB. Is there something I miss ? I tried to modify the dovecot.conf file like this mail_executable = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/popbsmtp.sh /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 %r "%r" and it write to the db the litteral value %r and not the ip, otherwise it write nothing. the connection with mysql works and any other operation on it works. this should be the last step for my setting. Hello, I recently installed dovecot on a server running Debian. I only have 10 users, but we probably have 6Gig of email between us. Things were working flawlessly for a couple of weeks, and I'm still getting email, but the last few days we are getting fewer emails that we typically do. So although things seem to be working well, everyone is suspicious something is wrong due to the lack of email volume. Is there a size limit that dovecot can manage? Are there any admin tools to get status messages for dovecot? Are there any reporting tools to show how many messages are processed/managed by dovecot? Thanks!!

hi all, this is needed to make the pop3_reuse_xuidl option work in 1.0alpha4. I am using maildir and I noticed that for each message which doesn't have an indexed X-UIDL header, the entire message is read from disk. as this is reading only headers, it is probably reasonable to stop reading at the end of the headers. it would also be neat if dovecot could be configured to only try reading X-UIDL headers from messages if the mailbox indexes don't exist, since I guess it would be common to want to preserve existing X-UIDLs but not bother for new messages (perhaps some mtime comparison, or something). opinions? I haven't looked at the source enough yet to be able to do this, but these two optimizations would vastly reduce the amount of disk IO as a result of using this option. grant. Hi all, I've been using dovecot 0.99x as a basic POP3/IMAP server at a couple of sites for a few months now and am very happy with it's simplicity, stability and performance, especially over the rather 'clunky' courier and the mammoth cyrus. I'm building up a top level mail server for our organisation and am desperate to use dovecot in there but I'm really struggling with using namespaces to create some shared maildirs - note that in this case I'm using the 1.0alpha4 debian packages that recently made it into 'etch'. I have very simple requirements here - I just want to be able to have some common folders subscribable by certain users, for my testing an announcements folder accessible by all and an archive folder I want to place some restrictions on. Whenever someone needs access to someone elses folder (ie. holiday watch), symlinking should be sufficient. I can start up dovecot, log in as a user (I authenticate against LDAP btw), see the directories specified in my namespace directives be created but I can't subscribe to anything. Squirrelmail gives an error stating "[TRYCREATE] Mailbox doesn't exist: archives" while Thunderbird shows the folder names in grey and refuses to subscribe. Am I missing the point of namespaces or have I failed to create something in the folders to get them to play? I read something about a dovecot-shared file but I think this is a 0.99 thing, although I tried creating the file with the permissions I wanted applied to the folder and it didn't do anything... I did notice that when the folders are created, they are created owned by the first user logged in. I have tried chmod'ing them to 777 to see if it makes a difference, but alas, no. The relevant bit of dovecot.conf is: namespace private { separator = / #prefix = #location = inbox = yes #hidden = yes } namespace public { separator = / prefix = announcements/ location = maildir:/var/mail/announcements/Maildir } namespace shared { separator = / prefix = archives/ location = maildir:/var/mail/archives/Maildir } I'm sure I'm just being picky, but a better explanation of namespaces in the docs might be in order, maybe with some examples. Hi list! I'm a little confused. I have set "login_process_per_connection = yes" and "login_processes_count = 1", and this is how my pstree looks when nobody is connected: dovecot -,- dovecot-auth `- imap-login However, when I connect with a client it looks like this: dovecot -,- dovecot-auth |- imap `- 2*[imap-login] I would expect it to only have one imap-login running. Anyway, when I disconnect the client, the imap process exits but imap-login keeps running: dovecot -,- dovecot-auth `- 2*[imap-login] This is when it gets really wierd. When I connect a client again, my pstree looks like I would have expected it to on my first connect: dovecot -,- dovecot-auth |- imap `- imap-login If I re-connect, we start over again (i.e. dovecot-auth, imap, 2 * imap-login). [Dovecot] Feature/bug starting from xinetd

Hi, I hate to have my first post be a bug, but this drove me crazy for a while. I compiled the latest version from source and followed the instalation instructions. I then copied the xinetd.d entries from the Wiki and proceded to test. No matter what I did I could not log on. I found that while I was editing /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf, nothing was hapening. I then started it manualy and found several errors in my editing. :-) After fixing the errors and getting it to work properly, I went back to running it from xinetd. It would not allow me to log on, nor would it use any of the loging options I set. After making a symlink from /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf to /etc/dovecot.conf, it worked perfectly. My suggestions: 1. Change the Wiki to point out the difference in the config file location. 2. Change the inetd version to default to /usr/local/etc. 3. Hello, I built a Fedora 4 sendmail server to replace our old one. I wanted to try the stock Dovecot popper (we currently use pop3d). I tried implementing Dovecot this morning and failed. All I want to use is the POP portion (no IMAP). From what I could find on the Internet, all I had to do is change dovecot.conf protocols line to read like this: protocols = pop3 Apparently, that wasn't enough. Here are the errors I saw in maillog: Oct 31 07:54:23 sendmail dovecot: child 25511 (pop3) returned error 89 Oct 31 07:54:24 sendmail pop3(cliffhayes): mbox: Can't create root IMAP folder /home/cliffhayes/mail: Permission denied Oct 31 07:54:24 sendmail pop3(cliffhayes): MAIL environment missing and autodetection failed (home /home/cliffhayes) Now, I did find out that I had a permissions problem with /var/spool/mail (I had done an SCP of all our users to var/spool/mail on new box). All user mailboxes had root/root as user/group. I know how to fix that for next time, but why is it trying to use a home directory (we don't use those)? And what MAIL environment is missing? Do I need to mess with the following settings: # default_mail_env = maildir:/var/mail/%1u/%u/Maildir # default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u # default_mail_env = mbox:/var/mail/%d/%n/:INDEX=/var/indexes/%d/%n Thanks, Cliff

Hi all, I've 4 servers with dovecot and ldap authentication behind a loadbalancer (Alteon). To connect to dovecot, client need to use a vip of the loadbalancer. To connect to the ldap server, dovecot need to use the loadbalancer cause there are several ldap server. The loadbalancer close a connection without activity during 30mn Dovecot lauch several authentication process who have a connection to the ldap server each. Each client (user) have several imap connection to dovecot. I've 2 problemes : - If a client (thunderbird for ex.) don't use a connection during 30mn, the loadbalancer delete this connection from his connection table and the client seem not able to correctly reopen another - If a dovecot authentication proccess want to request ldap but haven't do it in the last 30mn, it fail an say that the authentification fail. [Dovecot] New mailbox format

I've been doing some thinking on a new better mailbox format that'd be faster than mbox and maildir for most common uses. Comments welcome. It won't come to Dovecot v1.0, but I'll probably create another branch to Dovecot CVS where I'll start implementing it and some other possibly destabilizing changes. Generic ------- The point is to have a mailbox format where the mailbox can consist of one or more files. Grouping multiple files in a single file makes it faster to read, but it's slower to expunge mails from the beginning of the file. So this format would allow sysadmin to specify rules on how large the files would be allowed to grow. This format is mostly designed to work nicely with separate index files such as Dovecot has. The flags are stored in the mailbox files mostly as a backup in case the index gets lost or corrupted. Index File ---------- Named "index". Index file gives a mapping between UIDs <-> filenames: Header: <uidvalidity> <last-used-uid> Record: <uid-first> <uid-last> <filename> Record: .. eg.: 1127468129 5 1 3 msg.1 4 4 msg.4 All of the UIDs don't have to actually exist in the file if they have been expunged. The record should be removed once all of the UIDs have been removed from it (and the file itself been deleted). The same file may appear multiple times in the index. For example: 1 2 msg.1 3 3 msg.3 4 5 msg.1 This means that UIDs 1, 2, 4 and 5 are in file msg.1, but UID 3 is in file msg.3. The filename doesn't matter as long as it's unique, but probably wouldn't hurt to include its first UID in the filename so humans can find mails more easily. The filename however must not end with ".lock". The file is modified by creating first exclusively owned "index.lock" file, updating it and then rename()ing it over the index file. This lock file shouldn't be held for a long time, so if it exists, and it doesn't get modified at all within 30 seconds, it can be overwritten. Before rename()ing over the index file, you should check with stat() that the index.lock file is still the same as you expect it to be (in case your process was temporarily stopped for over 30 secs). The index file's mtime timestamp must grow after each modification. This makes it easy to check if new mail has been added to the mailbox. Mail File --------- File header: Bytes Format Description 8 hex Header size 16 hex Append offset 4 hex Mail header size 4 hex Mail header padding 4 hex Keyword count in mail headers Mail header: Bytes Format Description 8 hex UID 16 hex Mail size 1 1/0 Answered flag 1 1/0 Flagged flag 1 1/0 Deleted flag 1 1/0 Seen flag 1 1/0 Draft flag 1 1/0 Expunged flag n 1/0 Keywords The file layout then goes: <File header> - possible padding due to Header size <Mail header #1> - possible padding due to Mail header size <Mail data #1> - possible padding due to Mail header padding (ie. next Mail header's offset is divisible with Mail header padding) <Mail header #2> etc.. The UIDs must be ascending within the file (but as said above, some UIDs between them may exist in other files). When the file is opened, it must be shared locked with flock(). Expunging mails requires exclusive flock(), so expunges can't happen while someone is still reading the file. Mails can however be marked with expunged-flag, and such mails should be treated as if they are already expunged. Expunged flag must not be removed. If the mail for some reason is wanted to be un-expunged, it must be copied as a new mail with new UID to the mailbox. Modifying flags doesn't require any locks. You'll simply write over those flags you wish to change. That's why each flag takes one byte. Safest way to expunge is to copy all non-expunged mails after the first expunged one to new file. Then update the index file with the new location for the UIDs, and at last ftruncate() at the position of first expunged mail in the original file. Alternative way to expunge is to just move the data over the expunged mails and fruncate() at the end. No index file updates necessary. This is more filesystem quota friendly, but if the expunging gets aborted in the middle it will corrupt the mails. Appending mails can be done by either locking existing file with a dotlock and appending to it, or creating a new file. If appending to existing file, also flock() it so expunging won't happen in the middle of append. If appending to new file, create it with .lock suffix and then check that the file without .lock wasn't already just created. When appending to existing file, check "Append offset" from file's header. If that offset is at the end of file, just append there. Otherwise read the mail's header from there. If it has a non-zero UID and index file says that the same UID exists in this file, jump over the mail and do the same checks for all the rest of the mails in the file. Once the check doesn't match or you reach EOF, update the append offset in the header to that offset and write your mail there. Initially write the UID in mail's header as zeroes ('0', not NUL). Once the append is completely finished, you'll have to update it with the new UID. You'll do this by locking index file, reading the latest last-used-uid and using the next value for your UID. Once you've written it, rewrite the index file with updated last-used-uid field and your UID added to it. After this, update the append offset in the mail file and unlock it. Keywords file ------------- Named "index.keywords". This contains mappings between keyword numbers and names. TODO: may be problematic with lockless flag writes.. Recent file ----------- "index.recent.<uid>" file tells what the last non-recent UID was. The file doesn't have any data inside it. When opening the mailbox you should find and rename() the existing index.recent.<uid> file to the new index.recent.<last-uid>. A successful rename() means the mails between <uid>+1 .. <last-uid> are recent for you. A failed rename() means that someone else managed to do it. You should look for the file again and if it was renamed to less than <last-uid>, you should try again. Nightly cleanups ---------------- Because expunged mails may be left lying around for a while, there probably should be some nightly check that cleans them up. Other cleanups that may be necessary after crashes are: - .lock files - expunged data at the end of files (can be checked with same rules as how appending determines the offset where to append) One problem with nightly expunging is how to expunge mails if the file is still locked by some process. Forced shutdowns may be annoying to users and can be difficult to implement.. Alternative locking strategy ---------------------------- The locking strategy as described above is optimized for high concurrency: Only if mail file is in the middle of being expunged, we're waiting on locks. With appending we may be waiting for existing appends to finish if we don't wish to create a new file for some reason. Other than those, reading and flag updating are completely lockless. The two downsides to this are: 1. flock() isn't available everywhere. It could however be replaced with fcntl() if that's available. NFS may not have either. 2. Expunges can't happen while multiple processes are accessing the mailbox at a same time. This may be a problem if the mailbox never has less than two processes accessing it. The alternative to flock()ing would be to simply handle unexpected end-of-file reads as a sign of expunge, which would require re-reading index file to see where the mails went (or if they were really expunged). This has two problems however. One is that flag writes couldn't catch expunges without locking, and another is that if you've already sent half a mail to IMAP client, you have no other choice than to disconnect the client if you can't send the rest of the mail. It might be worth it optionally. Especially for NFS people. Then you'd basically have the dotlock file that locks appends, expunges and flag updates. Reading would still be lockless. Also for the best performance the mail flags could be stored only in Dovecot's index files. In that case there's no need to update flags and the only downside with this locking strategy would be the potential disconnections, which probably aren't all that bad. Compatibility ------------- If needed, it would be possible to create new/ and tmp/ directories under the mailbox to allow mail deliveries to be in maildir format. The maildir files would be then either just moved or maybe be appended to existing mail files.

I had to nuke the dovecot indexes and let it reindex (which throws off the ordering of some messages). The problem only happens to two accounts/users, which are used by more than one remote user/client at once. Dovecot OS is Linux 2.4.30 on RedHat 7.3. Clients are Thunderbird 1.0.6 on Linux and Windows. The mail storage format is Maildir. The indexes are stored in memory or in a separate directory (tried both). Any hints? -- Wolfram Schlich

[Dovecot] Segfault when using multiple servers

Should it be possible to run multiple dovecot servers on the same mailboxes (Maildir in my case)? I've a setup where 2 dovecot 0.99.13 servers write to the same mailboxes, which dovecot apparently does not like too much. Example (using imap): - Login with mail client on server1 - Login with webmail on server2 - Delete a mail using webmail on server2 - Hit send/receive in the mail client Result: server1 segfaults. Is such a setup, which is basically a loadbalancing setup, allowed at all by dovecot? Cheers, Marc

[Dovecot] mbox separators ignored

Using dovecot-0.99.13-4.FC2 I grabbed a bunch of Mailman archive files from the Weather mailing list here: <http://www.buoy.com/pipermail/weather/> I gunzipped the older ones, then concatenated them all in correct order to create one big mbox file. I dropped it into my ~/mail folder and started my IMAP client (Mulberry) and opened the new Weather folder. It shows one gargantuan concatenated message, instead of lots of more reasonable-sized ones. The messages appear to be properly separated by "<linefeed><linefeed>From<space>". Why doesn't dovecot parse them into separate messages? I double-checked and removed any header lines with Content-Length, X-UID, X-IMAPbase, and X-Keywords. So this should look like a new mbox file with new content delivered by procmail. What's confusing dovecot?

We have used qpopper on our email server RH 9 for long. But recently as the number of people using the server has increased too fast we have to switch to dovecot. Things seem to be OK with the rate users post and receive emails. But from that time very often I see this when top: . dovecot-auth <defunct> And some people sometimes have to restart their outlook to receive emails Could any give us a hand to solve this problem.
