i currently use procmail to sort my different mailing lists into differnet files for sanity puproses is there a way dovecot can find all these files? i have default_mail_env set to mbox:~/Mail/ could i use *:~/Mail/ as every file in /Mail is a mail file? -- David Willoughby email: dlw(a)d1w.org icq: 1852393

Well, ironically after my tests succeeded, my reply to the Dovecot list just now failed to append to the Dovecot maildir folder. So I guess it works sometimes and not other times. :( The error message is the same "failed: Invalid argument". Hi, my name is Andrés Rusconi, from Tucumán, Argentina. Sorry my English, please. I am a very happy new user of Dovecot: I gained speed and simplicity with him. But I noticed that in clients who use Outlook, the deleted messages do not copy to the trash folder. This is not critical, but did not happen with Courier, and the users askme about this behavior. Hi, Is there an administrator o master account in dovecot, which could be able too access all mailboxes? I need to periodically delete some emails (older than a number of days). I wanted to use imapfilter, a program that uses imap to access mailboxes to do that, but as the users can change their passwords, I can't do it. Is there a way to do that? At the moment SquirrelMail can only view the INBOX folder. Trash, Sent, Drafts and other folders i create are not listed. I remember there is a config in dovecot.conf to view where the default box is. I'm not sure how it should be set. My Inbox is in: /var/mail/$user/ The Other Dirs are in: /home/user/mail/ What should the config look like? Hi all, I use dovecot-1.0-alpha2. Way can't auth process shutdown in a clean way. I allways discover lot of zombies for dovecot-auth, in a short time before shootingdown by linux. Hi, is it possible to configure dovecot so that users from a specific IP (let's say 127.0.0.1) don't have to send password? They would be authenticated no matter if passwords match or not. Thanks, Sebastjan

Hello everyone, I'm getting the error below for 2 different users on my system of 150+ users: Sep 12 09:32:49 uavco pop3-login: Login: cah [::ffff:172.16.3.107] Sep 12 09:32:49 uavco pop3(cah): Error indexing mbox file /var/mail/cah: LF not found where expected Sep 12 09:32:49 uavco pop3(cah): Error indexing mbox file /var/mail/cah: LF not found where expected Sep 12 09:32:49 uavco pop3(cah): Couldn't open INBOX: Internal error occured. Refer to server log for more information. [2005-09-12 09:32:49] I've read in the archives that it's the blank line at the beginning of the mbox file, and once deleted everything works fine. The thing is, it keeps happening and I can't figure out why. Email clients that send mail to these accounts are the latest Outlook Express. As I said, I have 150+ users on the same system and they are fine. I'm not sure if protocol makes a difference, but we are using POP3 only. Any ideas what I can do to fix/prevent/correct this either programatically or with a patch of some sort? Is this actively being worked on? I'm running FC4 with dovecot-0.99.14-4.fc4. G'day list, Just a quick question - I need to configure Dovecot to do the following: * check default_mail_env for the users' inbox in MBOX format * If the above fails, serve the user an inbox from a secondary location, in MAILDIR format. I installed Dovecot on our FC3 sendmail server and get this from our Dallas office ( out of state to me ). dovecot(pam_unix)[13823]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost Only one Dallas user can get mail (pop3 or imap). All local users work fine. I ended upgoing back to UW and all works fine. What should I look for? Thanks

[Dovecot] problems with Auth and Alpha 1a

Hi all I'm not quite sure how to explain this problem, so I'll just go from the top ;-). System is setup on a FreeBSD with IMAP and POP3, both can use PAM and SQL (MySQL) as login methods, though only POP3 is accessible from "the world" - IMAP is restricted via firewall to only localhost. Simple eh? The problem is that dovecot apparently drops the SQL part from time to time. Though this can be fixed by HUPing the dovecotdaemon I'd rather that I didn't have to. I've narrowed the problem to something like this: Over time, Dovecot/POP3/SQL combination dies - I've yet to examine if the problem is on IMAP as well as this is only recently reported. I have never experienced this myself since I'm using Dovecot/IMAP/PAM and this seems to be rock solid. I hava bog standard install of 0.99.10.8, on an openbsd 3.6 box. every now and then i get an error from my or my users' IMAP email client saying that it couldn't access a particular inbox. a few clicks of "OK" or "Cancel" etc and the problem seems to go away. all kinds of errors (similar to above) in the imapd logfile though, seem to correspond with the timing of the abovementioned IMAP mail client errors. one thing: my users DO use procmail, so there is a chance that their IMAP client might have a mailbox open that procmail may be trying to append to. i wonder if this is a locking issue? i guess what i'm asking is - 2 thing: 1) how can i get these pesky imap client errors to go away so my users mailboxes can be successfully selected? 2) what do the indexing errors mean? are the 2 things related? Hi, I'm very new to administering mail, and this is surely a newbie question. I have my own IMAP mail server because I use my email as a way of filing important things, and I subscribe to a number of lists that I like to archive. I have about 40 mailboxes with up to 80,000 messages in some, and one with 40,000 messages is almost a Gigabyte in size. The total size is around 4 Gigabytes. Things were working quite well until I upgraded to OS X 10.4 and its new Mail.app mail client and then everything was too slow. I was using the UW IMAP server (2002d if I recall right) and Mail.app 1.3.9. I tried upgrading the server to the latest, but it didn't improve things noticeably. I swapped to dovecot 1.0alpha1, and used the mbox format, but that wasn't any better. I read that Maildir format was better, so I converted my mail to that format and tried that. It didn't seem much better. I tried to compile Cyrus on OS X and ran into all kinds of difficulty. I finally tried Cyrus on a Linux box, and turned off all my rules that move messages around. In comparing this to dovecot on my OS X box, Cyrus loads the messages significantly faster. I think there are some problems with my dovecot setup though. My mail.log is filled with this type of thing. [Dovecot] SSL/TLS stopped working in 1.0 alpha2

I have both 1.0 alpha1 and alpha2 installed on my test mail server. SSL/TLS does not work on alpha2. I'm using the same config file for both. No errrors in dovecot.log either. Is there a way to increase debugging info without recompiling?

Hello, I'm trying dovecot-lda (deliver.c has CVS version 1.18). When I try to deliver a mail, an empty directory is created name $HOME/mail. This is neither the configured (via LDAP) nor the default "mail" setting in the /usr/local/etc/dovecot-deliver.conf. When the $HOME directory does not exist, but the user itself: Sep 1 11:47:12 localhost deliver: mbox: Can't create root IMAP folder /home/skaise2a/mail: Permission denied Sep 1 11:47:13 localhost sm-mta[4684]: j819lCgd004682: SYSERR(root): mailer local died with signal 11 Default mail: mail = maildir:%h/.mailboxes:INDEX=/usr/local/var/spool/dovecot/indexes/%Lu Configured via LDAP for user skaise2a: maildir:/mailcache/skaise2a:INDEX=/var/cache/dovecot/indexes/skaise2a:CONTROL=/var/cache/dovecot/control/skaise2a I have only found the error message in dovecot's src/lib-storage/index/mbox/mbox-storage.c function create_root_dir(). The Dovecot logs indicate that dovecot-lda is requesting the information from it and the message is - once the empty directory could be created - delivered into the configured IMAP root. dovecot-v1.0-alpha build failed for Solaris 11 (OpenSolaris Nevada). The problematic line is in socket.c line 228. The fix should be to change SOL_TCP to IPPROTO_TCP found in netinet/in.h. This change should work universally on all platforms. Gary

I hava bog standard install of 0.99.10.8, on an openbsd 3.6 box. every now and then i get an error from my or my users' IMAP email client saying that it couldn't access a particular inbox. a few clicks of "OK" or "Cancel" etc and the problem seems to go away. all kinds of errors (similar to above) in the imapd logfile though, seem to correspond with the timing of the abovementioned IMAP mail client errors. one thing: my users DO use procmail, so there is a chance that their IMAP client might have a mailbox open that procmail may be trying to append to. i wonder if this is a locking issue? i guess what i'm asking is - 2 thing: 1) how can i get these pesky imap client errors to go away so my users mailboxes can be successfully selected? 2) what do the indexing errors mean? are the 2 things related? [Dovecot] An alternate "dovecot-auth" daemon using cyrus-sasl

We use dovecot in a heterogeneous environment (Windows/Linux desktops and Linux servers). For unified authentication we use a sheaf "Samba/Openldap" (i.e., Samba NT domain with openldap backend and pam/nss_ldap for Linux). Windows users are authenticated well everywhere, but there is one old issue. As "SPA" (NTLM) against NT domain is not supported by dovecot, it is necessary to use default "plain" method. In addition to security problems, it does also a problem of password unification. Each time a user changes the password, he should do it one more time for the mail program. I know that dovecot supports NTLM, however against local database only (not for NT domain controller). In early versions support of cyrus-sasl (which supports NTLM now) had been incorporated, however it like not work and now is removed. Fortunately, there is a possibility to substitute dovecot-auth executable. Therefore I have tried to make an alternate variant of dovecot-auth, which supports all that we need. For us, it seems to be more useful to create an auth daemon using cyrus-sasl, rather than to add domain support to existing ntlm code. First of all, it is easier for implementation. Besides it enables use of all mechanisms supported by cyrus-sasl (present and future), including GSSAPI. Anyway, it will be the useful additive to dovecot. I have made appropriate patches for both dovecot-1.0-stable and dovecot-1.0.alpha1. The idea is to copy "src/auth" to "src/auth-cyrus", strip all unneeded from newly created directory and add cyrus-sasl support. The resulting code probably looks not so elegantly as if it has been written separately, however this way allows to not make a lot of things from the scratch. The patch against 1.0.alpha1 is here: http://dmitry.butskoy.name/dovecot/dovecot-1.0.alpha1-cyrus.tar.gz . To be more readable, it is not a flat patch (due to a lot of whole files add/remove). It is a tarball with 3 files: a list of files to initial copy from auth/ to auth-cyrus/, a patch for resulting tree, and a script which automates this steps (:-)). (The script should be run in the root of the main source, i.e. a dir with src/ and doc/ subdirs). I already have successfully tested this patch with PLAIN method. However before testing of other methods, it would be desirable that somebody have looked at it. Whether someone could check up my patch (just fluently having read), at least for obvious bugs and typos? [Dovecot] Dovecot feature request: move /var/mail/uid to INBOX

Hello, UW-Imap has a (questional, but for me useful) feature to slurp all mails pending in /var/mail/uid into the user's INBOX whenever the user successfully logs on and the INBOX is not configured as /var/mail/uid. The usefulness for me is that users have a relatively small quota, so the noisy "over quota" messages pop up for everyone now and then, regardless how frequent one reads the mail. When I now set a large quota for the "pending INBOX", where the user (aka dovecot) can only delete mails from, I circumvent those messages, prevent that users use the (large) INBOX as yet another place to pile up data (the user does not know about the pending INBOX at all) and let the users have "full" control over their folders. The disadvantage is that it works for "real" users only. Another disadvantage is that one would expect "LDA"-features in the server portion of Dovecot, e.g. Sieve :-), or the server would need to spawn the Dovecot-LDA somehow. (Next thing is that, currently, the mails are delivered into the home directory of the users, what leads to several annoyances when someone is away for some time and finds his home directory locked, because the mass of mails locked the directory. Mostover, those IMAP servers I ran so far didn't allowed the user to delete a mail via IMAP often, because some temp or arbitary file couldn't created in the IMAP root. Because the user is already logged on onto Dovecot, there should be less problems deleting mails when the quota exceeds while slurping them in. At least I had extremly good experiences with this mechanism, when I used UW-Imap and the INBOX was located as mbx in the user's homedirectory.) Bye, -- Steffen Kaiser

Hi all, I have been having a hard time using Fedora Core 4 with dovecot +sendmail. Namely, I cannot read my home dir's procmail filtering dir (where I have some subfolders) in ~/mail. I cannot create mailboxes either. I'm wondering if this is a client issue, and whether I need to switch to Maildir, which I'd like to do, but don't know how to with sendmail (with postfix, it's a piece of cake). Any advice on what my problem is? I'm all ears! regards, Patrick

Patch by Chris Wakelin - "stack frame changed" crashfix for FETCH BODYSTRUCTURE - Added %R (reverse string) and %H (hash string) variable modifiers. These can be useful if you want to automatically split users to multiple partitions (eg. %3RHu gives values 0..2 based on the given username). See doc/variables.txt for more information. The POP3 bug mentioned in ChangeLog doesn't actually exist, so don't be alarmed by it :)

Hi Timo, Just a quick question: do index files still need removing when upgrading from 1.0-stable (as in the testXX series) or will Dovecot regenerate them automatically? I'm expecting to go with 1.0-stable on Tuesday for my 20,000 users (as that's what I've been testing), but if we see lots of index issues, I may want to upgrade to alpha1 (or later) fairly soon afterwards and it would be annoying to have do delete thousands of indexes! Hi, Today's core dump from 1.0alpha1 came from a syslog message of: IMAP(user): pool_data_stack_realloc(): stack frame changed gdb info on the resulting core dump attached. Question: how many people are building/using dovecot 1.0alpha1 with gcc 4.0.1 versus gcc 3.4.x? I am wondering if these issues come from the compiler instead of dovecot itself? I may have found a problem with the documentation concerning the subscriptions file. On the Dovecot web site there is a document that outlines the conversion from UW IMAP to Dovecot. The document says Dovecot's folder list is stored in ".subscriptions" However, I have found that Dovecot's folder list is really "subscriptions" without the preceding dot. Hello, I have noticed a weird behaviour in dovecot 0.99 which, I hope, is not replicated in 1.0-alpha. First I have to say that it works very well. So if I login with user foo(a)bar.com, the maildir is created. But when I log in with User FOO(a)BAR.COM, or FOO(a)BAR.com, then two other maildirs are created. Authentication is ok (I'm using mysql backend) but no mails are obviously found. Maybe a solutions would be adding some config item to turn lowercase the maildir path or authentication tokens (received from client) at login time. Or maybe I am missing something. Hi,all I have a POP3 problem about multi users from one IP address concurrent. [Issue description] The network architecture is as following. I have setup a mail server(sendmail/dovecot) in PlaceA with IP_A. And about 6 users are receving mail from the same IP_B( NATed public IP) in PlaceB. Their mails are many( about 1Mb/hour each) and ususally set fetch time as 10min/fetch. Then they complain that their mails often cannot be downloaded. [Reason investigation] I noticed that 1.when one of them fail to fetch mail. All TCP IP connection between IP_A and IP_B will be RST.which means that http/ssh/pop/smtp all not work for a while. And after about 10 minute, the http/ssh can work well. 2.I have asked them to backup and delete pop accounts and use webmail through imap provided by dovecot.And that seems work well but inefficient. I think this maybe because of multi users from one IP address concurrent, [Question] Would you pls provide some suggestion or solution about this issue? [Dovecot] Fatal: EOF while reading environment from master Error

Hello all! I guess it's a standard reason for joining a mailing list, but I have a problem. For some reason, whenever I try to start dovecot, be it from the xinet.d or from the commandline, I get this rather bizzare error. I can't even work out what it means, so I can't even begin to debug it. There is nothing extra in /var/log/messages, so I'm out of ideas. I've tried it with the default config, as well as with a config that I adjusted to fit the environment. I'm currently out of ideas. I did notice that there is a brief thread on this in the mailing-list archive, but it doesn't seem to point to a solution. Hopefully someone can help. I'm running it with the command /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login I am using the 1.0.alpha1 version, running on RedHat AS 3. thanks in advance. [Dovecot] Lot of crashing messages

Receiving a lot of the following messags with 1.0-76: pid 633 (dovecot-auth), uid 0: exited on signal 6 (core dumped) Any ideas? Sometimes, our entire port 110/143 servers begin refusing connections. Hardware checks out fine. Thanks in advance, Regards, Matt

[Dovecot] Dovecot-alpha1 and Thunderbird Sent problems

I have dovecot 1.0alpha1 setup in a semi test environment running on Solaris 2.6. When using Thunderbird 1.0.6 from Windows occasionally the client will hang after sending a message and before copying it to the Sent folder on dovecot. Sendmail logs indicate that the message has been sent correctly. The mail directory is not shared over NFS. It is in maildir format. Restarting Thunderbird and sending exactly the same message will work. This seems to imply that it is not message dependant. Once the error has occured once it continues to occur until the client is restarted. We have file system quotas however they are very large for a very small amount of mail. The filesystem is about 80% free space and about 98% free inodes. I cannot replicate the issue under Linux using Thunderbird that is current for FC3. Some hacked version 1.0.2-1.3.3 Imap workarounds turned on under dovecot are outlook-idle for imap. The issue has not been seen under Outlook. Outlook is using a local Sent-Items folder instead of an Imap one however. The connection is running over SSL so I can not sniff the traffic on the wire, I have not tried using the rawlog settings yet. I plan to start this now, however the sporadic nature of the problem may delay useful information from here. The dovecot logs are not showing error messages, just: dovecot: Sep 09 09:24:35 Info: imap-login: Login: user=.... TLS Any suggestions on where to start would be great. This issue was not reported to me when running dovecot-1.0-stable-20050718. Thanks for any help/suggestions on where to go from here. -- Nich

I recompiled from source and just replaced the dovecot binary in /usr/sbin. Trying to do 'rpmbuild -tb' and install the resulting rpm rendered everything unusable, but I guess that's just a matter of tweaking some options to 'configure'. Hi, I have a dovecot IMAP server whit the Horde/Imp webmail. I know that this request is OT, but I need an help.
