Static build problems

I'm attempting to build the latest Dovecot, version 2.3.19.1, on Gales Linux, a distribution based on musl libc with all static linking. After working around some expected troubles to generate configure, such as the libtool and iconv.m4 dependencies, the build appeared to complete successfully. But on closer inspection, the plugins were installed as a bunch of .a and .la files rather than getting linked into any of the binaries, as would be necessary to actually use them. I determined that the probe for dynamic module support (DOVECOT_MODULES defined in 'm4/modules.m4') had returned a false positive: in the static configuration musl includes a stub dlopen() that always returns failure at runtime, so a compile-and-link-only test is not predictive. Libtool itself is affected in the same way, but it comes with the --disable-shared option which usually makes things works fine. Further, looking through the automakefiles I'm not finding how the plugin libraries are supposed to work at all in this case and I begin to fear that they simply... aren't. Say it ain't so? Jacob

imapsieve removeflag ignored

Hi, i have working SPAM reporting implementend by imapsieve in debian's 2.3.13 dovecot. Recently i decide to add personal spam filter by bogofilter and use logic to learn/unlearn SPAM/HAM based on message flags. Here is example of moving message from Junk folder (the opossite logic is similar): if hasflag "$Junk" { execute :pipe "bogofilter" ["-Sn"]; removeflag "$Junk"; debug_log "Learned HAM (and unlearned)"; } else { execute :pipe "bogofilter" ["-n"]; debug_log "Learned HAM (only)"; } # mark as learned addflag "$NotJunk"; report ... When i move message, the debug lines in log shows, that logic works and flag is added as expected, but the other flag is not removed. Thus after moving mail from Junk, which has $Junk flag, it has both flags, the $Junk and $NotJunk. I tried to move removeflag action outside of condition and add it just before addflag, but the result is the same. For now i do not know if here is something wrong in my script, or i did some other mistake. On IRC cmouse tell, that removeflag was fixed in some early version (2.3.5 or so), but it doesn't work here. Using sqlite as dict for last_auth plugin

Hi! It is required to collect statistics about the time of the last IMAP and POP3 login of the user and the delivery of letters to him via lmtp. The last-login plugin is perfect. But I don't want to use heavy databases as the mail system service is served by the Oracle DB. The most suitable option, as I see, is to store statistics in the sqlite DB, but after going through all the options in the configuration file, I could not use sqlite. Also, by the way in EXIM MTA, there is verify syntax condition in data acl, which checks all email headers and validate that they are standards compliant and reject sending any email beforehand to your issue which has non-compliant header and offers the ability to remove such headers with condition handling e.g. if contained any Sieve header, to request removing message id headers with headers_remove and add compliant one with add_header, and I guess this will mitigate any mail service provider rejection issue. I have an email with the following header line: From: 'Thank you!Kohls' <Kohls-MNc(a)FeedbackKohlsOpinionRequestedlxecrftHO.com> I am trying to match that with: if address :contains "from" "Thank you!Kohls" { addflag "\\Seen"; fileinto "Junk"; stop; } However, the matching portion of the from address is only the section between < and >. Since there are changing sections that are different for each email, I can't use that. I wanted to match the stuff before <. I have tried numerous formats for the if statement but none of them have worked. What is the proper way to make that match work? Thanks, -- Doug

I use Virtual Users, with System User vmail, home is /var/vmail but dovecot stored message in path /home/vmail/<domain>/user. In configuration files is /var/vmail (dovecot users). Custom post login scripting variables via ID command

Hi there, I wonder if dovecot would consider this feature request. In post login scripting, given USER, IP, LOCAL_IP, and userdb lookup fields, are only available, I want to push additional variables from web mail to dovecot using ID commands yet I looked at the source in imap-login-cmd-id.c and script-login.c it seems to be possible while I'm not an expert in C and IMAP standards and not sure if its something would break the standards. I hope the dev team to consider this and if anyone have a workaround or an idea with I can start to patch a workaround myself, please let me know as it would be very much appreciated. With thanks. I have the impression that variables like "${from}" are all being set from scanning the whole email again seeing these "if matches" statements. Is that not super inefficient? I would assume that such variables would be set and made available upon the receipt of a message. 3. Say for testing purposes I would like to add sender email addresses to a database file (eg gdbm) per user. How would I go about doing this? Do I need to create something like in https://github.com/dovecot/pigeonhole/tree/src/lib-sieve/plugins Or can I just create a go binary, and parse data to it? Is there not something like a hello world example for this?

Duplicate UID warning in dsync backups

Hi, Running dovecot version 2.3.18 with mdbox storage. I run daily backups using dsync on the same server into maildir format. Several times per week I will get an error like the one below that prevents backups from completing. The error is always on my user, never any of my other couple dozen users. dsync(doug): Warning: Deleting mailbox 'INBOX': UID=133060 already exists locally for a different mail: GUIDs don't match (1657786027.M158587P19048.maildev.domain.com vs 581a08178e8ecf62f04700002bad4ea1) dsync(doug): Error: Couldn't delete mailbox INBOX: INBOX can't be deleted. Subsequent backups typically have a slightly different error. dsync(doug): Warning: Deleting mailbox 'INBOX': UID=132994 GUID=407c871b0ec1c562b51000002bad4ea1 is missing locally dsync(doug): Error: Couldn't delete mailbox INBOX: INBOX can't be deleted. Notice the UID and GUID are different from the first error. At this point I will identify 407c871b0ec1c562b51000002bad4ea1 in the source mailbox, and move it to another folder. More often than not that clears things up. The backup command I am using is dsync -u doug all backup maildir:/home/doug/.mailbkup/mailboxes My questions are: Is the "locally" referring to the source or the target of the backup? Is that why I am seeing a reference to maildev here? Is that name cached somewhere? Can it be corrected? Does it matter? Hello, I've tried to find info (apart from looking at the sources) but it seems this isn't mentioned anywhere. The setting plugin { sieve = file:~/sievedir;active=~/.sievefilter } names the directory where the scripts are stored and the symlink pointing at one. Right now the sievedir seems to be created 0700 plus some - probably inherited - g+s. How could I change mode (to 02770 preferably)? Also the script files are created 0600 by managesieve which really would be nice to be 0660 instead. The main problem is that external programs shall stat() .sievefilter but they only share groups. Outlook 365 MUA produces dovecot changing filename on some mailbox

Hello I have a setup on which dovecot is the server in a domain on which mailboxes are >20GB, some of them are 150GB or more. When reconfiguring _some_ mailboxes with Outlook 365 (configuring a previously used mailbox on a new PC), the process takes too long even if mail visibility on Outlook is 3 months. Inspecting at INBOX cur directory I did note that the 'ls' command shows the last file listed is a file from year 2020, 2019 or whatever not being the last received mail; that means the alphabetical ordering of 'ls' is showing past years after the last received mail, i.e. dovecot changed the epoch in filename. This only happens with Outlook. If I issue 'lsof' (with grep) I see the file that is being renamed passing through tmp/ directory and after that, the file is placed under new/ directory (I guess) and Outlook sees a new email to sync, making the sync process too long... mails that have been synced are resynced... Take a look at the timestamp on filenames: 1662769412 corresponds to "Fri Sep 9 20:23:32 -04 2022" and 1662874176 corresponds to Sun Sep 11 01:29:36 -04 2022 but mails were neither sent nor received on that dates. Replicator Failure

Hello, I recently noticed the following errors in my log file and replicator status shows all accounts failed. I am seeing the same error on both hosts. "dovecot: doveadm(name(a)domain.com): Fatal: connect(192.168.1.250:12345) failed: Interrupted system call” # doveadm replicator status Queued 'sync' requests 0 Queued 'high' requests 0 Queued 'low' requests 0 Queued 'failed' requests 0 Queued 'full resync' requests 0 Waiting 'failed' requests 8 Total number of known users 8 Replication used to work and I do not know when it started failing. I restarted dovecot on both hosts to no avail. Any idea on how to get more information and resolve this issue? I cannot find anything else in the logs David

doveadm-search finds emails, but IMAP search fails to find any

Using dovecot 2.3.7.2 with solr 8.11.2 when I do: doveadm search -u user mailbox INBOX subject "something" I get multiple mail ID's. When I start a manual IMAP session and login as that user, select INBOX, and try the command: . search subject "something" It returns zero mail ID's; this is consistent across all searches using IMAP - no results returned, no matter what I search for in IMAP. The only way that I found to get around is to unsubscribe the INBOX folder and subscribe again. Then the error is gone until I delete a bunch of messages again. The error only occurs if I delete the messages within short time or select multiple (about 20msg at once). If I delete them one-by-one always waiting for expunge message in dovecot logs to appear then I can delete as many as I want. Thunderbird can't connect to Dovecot (bad certificate: SSL alert number 42)

Hi folks, on a Rocky Linux 8.6 based home server I run Dovecot with an account that I use as an archive. Archive means, that from different Thunderbird instances I connect to that Dovecot via IMAPS to move emails there, that I want to keep. Since some days from all Thunderbird instances I can no longer connect to that Dovecot account. In /var/log/maillog of the server I see Sep 14 06:39:54 server3 dovecot[2033173]: imap-login: Disconnected: Connection closed: SSL_accept() failed: error:14094412:SSL routines:ssl3_read_bytes:sslv3 alert bad certificate: SSL alert number 42 (no auth attempts in 0 secs): user=<>, rip=192.168.177.105, lip=192.168.177.13, TLS handshaking: SSL_accept() failed: error:14094412:SSL routines:ssl3_read_bytes:sslv3 alert bad certificate: SSL alert number 42, session=<dL1luJvokK3AqLFp> I found that Openssl alert number 42 might be a problem with the SSL certificate (which certificate?) but also might be an expired SSL certificate (which certificate?). As on the Dovecot installation I work with a self signed certificat. I created a new self signed certificate yesterday with an expiry not before year 2032. That did not help, I see the same messages when I try to connect from Thunderbird. Just to see how Thunderbird is involved in the problem I installed Claws-Mail. From Claws-Mail I do NOT have those problems, I can access to Dovecot via IMAPS as expected. I do not understand why all my Thunderbird installations can no longer access Dovecot via IMAPS. This worked fine for about 18 months. I can't prove but I think on beginning of month it worked fine. Something happened meanwhile. If there is a problem with an SSL certificate (bad certificate: SSL alert number 42), which certificate makes the problem? The certificate used by Dovecot or some certificate used in Thunderbird? Simple construct to reproduce this: 0.) Have a.pem with SAN `foo.example.com`, b.pem with `bar.example.com` 1.) Configure haproxy frontend with `bind *:636 ssl crt /foo/a.pem ssl crt /foo/b.pem` 2.) Try to use ldaps://bar.example.com/ in passdb, receive "auth: Error: LDAP: Can't connect to server: ldaps://bar.example.com" Expectation, of course, would be for this to work; most libraries should support it, it's probably just a matter of convincing the appropriate binding. Overquota flag and auth caching

Hello, I like the over quota flag mechanism in Dovecot. I found out that I get in trouble if a user gets over quota and I have turned on auth caching, because the cache does not automatically invalidate a user while toggling the flag. The cache still serves the old state. The result is that mails are still accepted, even a user went over quota resulting in bounces. Workaround is to flush a user from inside the toggle script, which solves the bounce problem, but it prevents the user from getting under quota before the user is flushed from the cache again. What is the correct way to use the over quota flag and which solutions can be taken to invalidate the user? Is it possible to do this in a Lua user backend? Any other method? real duplicates of some e-mails / dovecot-2.3.19

Hi, we have the issue, that some(!) e-mails we receive are duplicated when processed by dovecot and stored to the users inbox. The mails are binary identical, same message ID, same size etc. diff sees no difference …. For now we only see that it happens do small mails max. +- 5k in size. And in dose not happen for all mails, but some are spam, some are internal mails some are newsletter which are expected…. and it happens for different users. Dose anyone have/had a similar issue? Handling imap from outlook 365

I apologize if this has been answered before, but... Microsoft Outlook 365 doesn't allow a user to specify the account name for an imap acout, only the email address. Thus fred(a)smith.com<mailto:fred@smith.com> tries to log in as "fred(a)smith.com<mailto:fred@smith.com>" rather than "fred". Has anyone seen a way to fix this (Microsoft help boards are silent), perhaps by stripping the "@smith.com" during the logon procedure? Emilio, Thanks for the suggestions, but neither of these worked for me. Manual setup on Outlook 365 (I think as opposed to Outlook 202x), doesn't let you set the account name directly. It's being "helpful." Interestingly enough, if you set up as POP3, it realizes the account name is wrong and lets you enter it once you try to sync. Not so with IMAP. I was able to create the new account on the control panel, but outlook365 ignores all those accounts. Unclear how to get both user and domain quotas to work

Hi, First of all: my apologies for this long message. I'm trying to post all the information anybody could need to help me on my way. What I'm trying to make is an installation where both users and domains can have quotas. Ideally I would configure a quota for a domain and set a quota of 0 for all users within that domain, so that mail will be accepted up to the point where the domain quota is reached. Setting up user quota was fairly easy, there's lots of documentation around and examples to take inspiration from. Not so much for domain quota however, or I'm really bad at searching the Net. I'm running Debian Bullseye here: MariaDB 10.5.12 Dovecot 2.3.13 Postfixadmin 3.3.10 I want to use dictionaries in MySQL, because eventually this will be a platform with several Dovecot and Postfix servers. At this time I'm only running one Dovecot installation and a few Postfix servers (two for communication with the outside world and one to do the virus and spam scanning). This works like a charm: if I don't configure a quota for a user, he gets the default 1GB, if I override it in Postfixadmin, then that's what he gets. I'm running quota-status on a TCP-port, so the gateway SMTP-servers can connect to Dovecot for a quotacheck to decide whether to accept or reject an incoming message. Again, this works flawlessly. I can't find any serious documentation about this mapping thing. In particular, what's with that "pattern"? All I can find in the documentation is: "The dict key must match exactly priv/quota/storage. The dict keys are hardcoded in the Dovecot code, so depending on what functionality you’re configuring you need to know the available dict keys used it." -- https://doc.dovecot.org/configuration_manual/dict/#dict-sql If anyone can point me at better documentation than the actual source code: please! I browsed through the quota-plugin source code, but I'm not a programmer and couldn't find what I thought I was looking for. That said, I'm not sure where I got the third "map" from, with the shared/expire pattern. I seem to have forgotten to document that bit of my journey. Now, domain quotas... I've tried all kinds of stuff, but at the moment I'm stuck with something that seems to almost work. I added a second quota root: plugin { quota2 = dict:Domain quota:%d:proxy::sqldomainquota quota2_rule = *:bytes=1024M quota2_status_success = DUNNO quota2_status_nouser = DUNNO quota2_status_overquota = "552 5.2.2 Domain quota exceeded" quota2_vsizes = yes } dict { sqldomainquota = mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-sql.conf.ext } This dict refers to the same mapping as the one for user quotas, and I think that's the way it should be. Please correct me if I'm wrong. This creates a new user in the quota2 table, by the name of just the domain. Unfortunately, it simply fills it with the numbers from the first user it can find in that domain, not all users in that domain combined. What I think I should do, is change something in the dict so that it sums up all users in that domain, something like this: SELECT SUM(bytes) FROM quota2 WHERE username LIKE '%@domain'; Problem is that I can't find anything useful online with regards to this, I'm not even sure if I'm thinking in the right direction here. Old-stats plugin and fifo_listener permissions

Hello, Currently working on using the old-stats plugin in dovecot version 2.3.10.1. What file permissions are recommended for the old-stats-mail and old-stats-user sockets? I was seeing a lack of data from the doveadm oldstats dump command until I adjusted the default config to the following: service old-stats { fifo_listener old-stats-mail { group = mode = 0666 user = root } fifo_listener old-stats-user { group = mode = 0666 user = } } Not totally clear on which processes need read or write on those so any advice is appreciated.

Managesieve not working

Hi, I am running dovecot 2.3.7.2 on ubuntu, and have a replication setup. I noticed that managesieve doesn't seem to be working. On my backup MX, doing a telnet to 4190 gets me the proper greetings, but doing the same on my main server just gave me the normal telnet "Escape character is..." I get the following info on the server: root@d0ba5bb19b6b:/# doveadm service status managesieve name: managesieve process_count: 0 process_avail: 0 process_limit: 1024 client_limit: 1 throttle_secs: 0 exit_failure_last: 0 exit_failures_in_sec: 0 last_drop_warning: 0 listen_pending: n listening: y doveadm_stop: n But when attempting to connect, it doesn't work. Hello all! Recently I upgraded my mail server to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and ever since then I am periodically getting some dovecot errors like the below in my mail log. As far as I can tell, my unix perms are just fine. What is ACL/MAC? Hi! I'd like to set up proxy authentication. This works fine, but I cannot get the passwords in to be read from file. Specifically I have this passdb block. passdb { driver = passwd-file mechanisms = plain scram-sha-256 default_fields = proxy=y host=dovecot-backend master=imapc-master-user proxy_mech=plain pass=</run/secrets/dovecot.imapc-master-user/password args = /run/secrets/dovecot.generated.app-passwd-file/passwd } This sets the password to the string /run/secrets/dovecot.imapc-master-user/password. I'd like the password to be set to the content of said file. Is it possible to get the password from a file or less desirable from the environment? Thousands of SSL certificates stalls new logins during reload - problem with Dovecot config process

Hello, I'm running a dovecot 2.3.19.1 server that has around 6000 SSL certificates in separate config files, each containing: local_name "domain" { ssl_cert = ... ssl_key = ... } When new certificate is added, dovecot is reloaded (around 20 times a day). When dovecot is being reloaded, users are unable to log in for around 30 seconds. The main problem here seems to be that during reload, new config process is immediately designated as the one serving config requests and then it starts parsing config files, which takes around 20-30 seconds. If it would parse config files first, and only then would become a new process for serving config requests, then it would probably solve the problem. Or perhaps there is a better way to load new certificates or a way to optimize? There is another problem with config process and shutdown_clients=no. We do not want to disconnect users during reload, because e.g. Thunderbird displays a popup that server is shutting down. When there are long lasting IMAP connections from Google and other services that aggregate e-mail, old config process is not being killed. Because config process with ~6000 certificates is using ~1 GB of RAM, it can quickly rise to 20 GB of memory used. This is not a big issue however, because we have created a task that kills old processes, but there could be a built-in mechanism to solve that problem. I have created minimal configuration and scripts to recreate problem. Reproduction steps below. Call procmail after sieve

Hello, I'm trying to achieve the following scenario with dovecot + sieve + procmail. Dovecot is set as LDA in postfix (if this makes any difference) I need to set sieve that after it has executed all it's scripts (including before, ~/.sieve etc) and if keep is in still in effect to call procmail to also execute the custom user filters and then return (if it is not forwarded elsewhere or some) to dovecot for normal delivery. If you ask this I need this for backward compatibility. I now use procmail for local delivery,spam/virus filtering, and users have set a lot of custom filters/redirects. mailbox_command = /usr/bin/procmail-wrapper -o -a $DOMAIN -d $LOGNAME I want to migrate to dovecot as lda and sieve for filtering but to keep procmail working for a while. Lazy Expunge - why oh why deprecating namespace storage for this

Hi Dovecot, Noticed on your web site that you have marked lazy_expunge storage location to namespace as deprecated since v2.3.0 and suggest a single mailbox with acl is the way to go. This seems to be a backward step for those that make use of the alt storage facility. Is there anyway we can persuade you NOT to deprecate this - it still works atm Why ? Well scenario time .... Installations make use of alt-storage feature so that new messages can be stored along with indexes etc on faster storage, whilst offloading older less viewed mail to a different storage tier. With storage to namespace - that namespace can have a location set that separates it from the mailbox (maybe even on a 3rd tier of storage) BUT with the mailbox solution then any deleted mail will in fact return from the alternate storage to the primary storage, and then will need to have a job run to alt-move it back off the faster storage to sit with the older messages and also can no longer be a potential 3rd tier of storage. This seems crazy and in fact some of reason mdbox is avoided since purging an mdbox means that any messages on alt-storage gets pulled back to primary storage. Alternately are there plans to allow a mailbox to have a 'location' in which case the location of the expunge mailbox could be set differently ? rgds Matt

Hello, I have a domain in virtual_mailbox_domains: aaa.com I have also the virtual_alias_domains which include: bbb.com I know how to forward x(a)bbb.com to y(a)aaa.com by setting up the file "virtual_alias_maps": x(a)bbb.com y(a)aaa.com (and run postmap after the changes.) But, how can I setup virtual_mailbox_maps (if I name this correctly)? for example, 111(a)aaa.com forwards to 222(a)aaa.com. Thank you.

multiple / backup sql servers for sql server access

I am using this file: dovecot-sql.conf.ext and in there I have a connect = "host=<dbserver> dbname=<dbname> user=<dbuser> password=<dbpass>" My <dbserver> was down and I lost mail access for a few days before I realized that there was an issue. How can I specify a backup server so that if my primary sql server goes down, a backup sql server will be queried? -- jack

Understanding Auth-Worker Logging

Sometimes when auth-worker gets logged there is an extra 'field' combined with the username and IP inside the sql() section. dovecot[911]: auth-worker(8131): conn unix:auth-worker (pid=3870,uid=97): auth-worker<2>: sql(user(a)example.com,xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,<8Q4ycCznAPdoiAwp>): Password mismatch (SHA1 of given password: 6ef33886cc5e17a60590cb4badac98d2960b6914) What is the "<8Q4ycCznAPdoiAwp>" and why is it logged only sometimes? Is there any documentation explaining what's inside of logs for dovecot?

Hi everyone, I have a weird problem with replication that I'm unable to solve. A new account is sychronized from an external provider via imapsync. The mails end up on my backend1. I see that the folder structure is immediately replicated to backend2. However, a lot of mails are missing and "doveadm replicator status" also states that something failed: priority fast sync full sync success sync failed mail(a)example.com none 00:02:36 00:39:47 - y There are no error log entries regarding this user at all. After some research I tried to start the replication manually with "doveadm -D backup -u mail(a)example.com -d tcp:x.y.z.11" and finally I got an error message: Jul 31 13:55:37 doveadm(mail(a)example.com)<11341><rm1YCblt5mJNLAAAJFg/Tg>: Debug: brain M: Mailbox INBOX: local=e74590221b6ce6620d29000024583f4e/0/1, remote=20a9ce2b1c6ce662244e0000baba0ddd/0/1: GUIDs conflict - will be merged later As a matter of fact, the mails in the inbox are the ones that are missing on backend2. I always end up with this error, no matter what I do: - I completely removed the folder structure on backend2. - I removed all database entries. - I removed this user from the replication, ran imapsync again followed by "doveadm -D backup ..." I also removed fts-flatcurve to rule this out as a cause of error. I have no idea what to do. This configuration worked for months. I got this error with 2.3.17.1 and 2.3.19.1 Any hints would be highly appreciated. Sieve Symlink Creation

The first time when the sieve files and folders get created, the active symlink is created as a full absolute path .active_sieve -> /mnt/email/domain/user/_sieve/filters.sieve After that, if you disable and enable the rule set the symlink gets recreated as relative .active_sieve -> filters.sieve How can i have the symlink always created as a relative path even on first time creation? Having a full absolute path over a mounted NSF is fragile.
