Hello, You say ntpd is running. Is it running as a daemon ? AFAIK, to keep good time on a linux machine inside the network, you need to run "ntpdate" and not "ntpd". I had _exactly_ the same problem and I was running an ntp daemon. I wasn't actually syncing to anything. So,I did some searching and found out that I need to run "ntpdate ntp.server.fqdn", then add this same line to cron. Hello. If mailbox name include non latin chars, dovecot save it encode to modification UTF-7. Example "тест" convert to "&BEIENQQ6BEEEQg-". If replace & to + I can decode it: <?php $str = '+BEIENQQ6BEEEQg-'; echo iconv('UTF-7', 'UTF-8', $str); ?> But I can't understand what encoding use dovecot for keywords? I set "тест" (number 5) keyword: cat dovecot-keywords 0 &bcienqrbbeiepgqybdaetw-_&bdwenqrcbdoema- 1 test 2 $label1 3 $label2 4 $label3 5 &beienqq6beeeqg- but "&beienqq6beeeqg-" do not convert to "тест". Why?

[Dovecot] Bug Report: Failure delay config is ignored

I have a set of automated tests for a system that can authenticate a user by forwarding authentication details to a server. That is, in order to authenticate a user, this system logs on to, e.g., an IMAP server using the credentials supplied by the user to verify the correctness of those credentials. I've been using dovecot as the authentication server to test IMAP, IMAPs, POP3, and APOP. To run the tests (most of which are authentication failures), I configure dovecot without authentication failure delays, since obviously I don't want to wait several minutes for the tests to finish. Setting the configuration variable auth_failure_delay to 0 worked fine in Dovecot 1.2, but since Debian updated to Dovecot 2.0 it no longer works. The tests take a very long time to run. I tried changing my passwd file to include nodelay=y, but this only works in a very limited way. For the set of tests which use the correct username, but an incorrect password, this successfully disables the failure delay. However, for the set of tests which use incorrect usernames (names not found in the user database or the password database, and which therefore don't have the extra nodelay field), the failure delay still occurs. There seems to be at least two problems here. The first is that it isn't clear what effect auth_failure_delay has. The comment in the sample config file just says "Time to delay before replying to failed authentications", which is certainly an incomplete description if not totally inaccurate. This setting seems to be completely unmentioned in the 2.0 wiki. The second problem is that the nodelay extra field can only be applied on a per-user basis. There doesn't seem to be any way to apply it to all users, or to apply it to authentication attempts for non-existent users. It seems to me that the failure delay that is actually used should either be 1) the actual value of auth_failure_delay (ideally with some random variance for extra security, but recognizing 0 as meaning disabled) or 2) some multiple of auth_failure_delay, where the multiplier increases with subsequent failures up to some max delay, with 0 still giving no delay. Config information follows. I used to filter my mail through gmail with the following sieve rule. if not header :contains "X-Forwarded-To" "bmihulka(a)hulkster.net"{ redirect "bmihulka(a)gmail.com"; } With the gmail account set to forward to bmihulka(a)hulkster.net After upgrading to dovecot 1.2.9 and postfix 2.7.0 from whatever was with debian etch. I get a forwarding loop error. I don't know if this is a dovecot issue or postfix issue so I'm starting here. If anyone has any ideas or a better place to ask about this please let me know. Hi, We want dovecot to listen on a specific ip4 & ipv6 addresses like so: listen = 145.58.1.1, [2a02:458:1::1] But on startup it tells me: Fatal: service(managesieve-login) Can't resolve address [2a02:458:1::1]: Name or service not known Wether it is in the dns or not. If I however change the listen directive to: listen = f.qd.nl where f.qd.nl resolves to an ip4 and ipv6 address dovecot starts up and binds to these ipaddresses the way we expect it. However this makes it depend on DNS which is undesirable. Hi all, This is my first message to the list. I've been experimenting with running dovecot on my unRAID server (basically, a parity-protected array of disks, running on a slackware 13.1 platform). Someone on the unRAID forum had built a binary distribution of dovecot 1.1.20 and I got this up and running without too much trouble. Today, I've been building the latest dovecot release (2.0.12) and getting this up and running. My biggest problem has been reconstructing the configuration file but, after a few diversions, I'm now back up and running, with access to my mail once more. However, I'm just a little bit miffed that I can't get rid of this warning. As far as I have been able to figure out, dovecot auth always works over a Unix domain socket. I believe it is not currently possible to operate dovecot auth over an Internet domain (TCP) socket. Am I correct? I want to call dovecot's exported authentication from a Java application. Java doesn't natively know how to talk to a Unix domain socket, so there are inconveniences. There are 3rd party JNI libraries to allow Java to do it, but I'm not too wild about the idea of using JNI. My current thinking is to rig up some kind of proxy/shuttle arrangement between a localhost TCP port and the dovecot auth Unix domain socket in the filesystem. I'm looking at using the more or less standard tool "socat" to do that. ('m on a mainstream Linux distribution.) Has anyone else confronted and solved this problem? Do tell us the details .... :-) TIA!

Hello, I'm currently packaging dovecot 2.0.3 under Mandriva Linux. It has been using LDFLAGS="-Wl,--as-needed -Wl,--no-undefined" for shared libraries for over two years[1]. And I've found there are lots of linking problems with dovecot 2.0.3. [Dovecot] Dovecot Folder Creation Problem

Hi all, I installed Dovecot-Postfix as an IMAP mail server and also RoundCube as webmail. When I create an account using Postfix Admin and login to webmail, roundCube creates the Junk Mail, Deleted Emails folder automatically. I also added this account to my Microsoft Outlook 2007. Following some tutorials on the internet I created an Outlook rule to move the sent emails to the IMAP server's sent mail folder. When I send an email, the email disappears from the default sent items of Outlook but it doesn't appear on the IMAP server's sent items folder. Do I have to set some kind of other permissions on the IMAP server to fix this problem? My version of Dovecot is 1.2.16. I want my clients use Microsoft Outlook and reach all received and sent emails via webmail anywhere they go. Many thanks Ceyhun

Dovecot provides a master login (a master user name and password that can log into all user accounts). I've setup Dovecot as per: http://wiki1.dovecot.org/Authentication/MasterUsers Here's my problem. The only way I can authenticate successfully is if I try to authenticate through telnet twice. Also, imapsync (the tool I need to use to migrate over emails from Dovecot to other mail server) won't work because of this. $ telnet mail01.server.com 143 Trying 10.10.10.12... Hi all, first of all, I must say that I am pretty new to mailing lists, so please, if I do something wrong, just tell me. Now, my problem. I'm migrating a mail service from a temporal to a definitive server. Both servers have the same versions (Postfix, Dovecot -1.0.7, POP3 & IMAP services-, MySQL) and it all works perfectly. The only problem is with the users that store their mail on the server; on the testing, when I check if there is new mail, I download the mail stored on the new server once more. After that, it works correctly (no more unwanted downloads), but I need to avoid that first download. I have been investigating before writing to the list. I have checked that UIDL are the same on both servers, and the configuration is exactly the same except for the name of the server; I have seen in few places that it may be the cause for downloading thdovecote mail again, so I changed the name of the new server to the old's one, but it happened again. I know that lots of servers are migrated every day, and never heard about those problems, so I suppose it must be a solution for this, or maybe a better way to configure the servers. Is it possible to allow master users to be authenticated against PAM? Something like: passdb { driver = pam #args = /etc/dovecot/passwd.masterusers master = yes #pass = yes } and then have a userdb which qualifies what accounts are master accounts but doesn't have passwords? Thanks, Jonathan

Hi Robert, Many thanks for your reply. I realized that the title of my email was not explaining my exact problem. My problem is not the creation of the folders. I am happy with the folders created by RoundCube. I am confused why Outlook can't write to the Sent Items folder. Logically Outlook, TB or any other email client must have permission to write the sent mails to the chosen sent mail folder on an IMAP server without any problems. Am I wrong? I've done some searching and maybe I'm missing something... I have a remote dovecot and postfix server running on debian 5. I then have a local fetchmail server that retrieves email from the dovecot server via pop3s every 5 minutes. The problem is that the /var/log/dovecot.log file has grown to be over 1.1GiB over a period of less than 1 year. Is there a way to limit the size of the dovecot.log file, or do I have to run a monthly cron job or something to take care of it for me? Thank you, Aaron Johnson

What is the recommended way to move a message from one mailbox to another using CLI - serverside commands ? Since IMAP does not support transactional moves between mailboxes - The only thing that comes to my mind is this operation: 1) extract message from mailbox A using "doveadm fetch" 2) inject message into mailbox B using "dovecot-lda" 3) expunge message from mailbox A using "doveadm expunge" it this the right solution ? One problem with above approach is that injecting through "dovecot-lda" will trigger the sieve script - which I'm not interested in since the message have already been injected and processed once before - at delivery... Hi, I'm implementing a shell-script (pseudo) solution to the missing IMAP Outbox feature in Dovecot (Courier IMAP feature http://www.inter7.com/courierimap/INSTALL.html#imapsend) In order to remove the message from the Outbox once it is sent I have a question: What is the recommended way to delete a message from a mailbox (from an "external" server side program - such as a shell script) ? Can I just remove the file from the mailbox - I cannot seem to find any doveadm commands that does this task. I guess that Dovecot over time will discover that the atime and mtime of its indexes and maps does not reflect reality - or is there another (better) way to delete a message. Multiple mirrors (seems like you have plenty of offers) preferrably is multi geographical regions, using DNS round robin with TTL 0 on www and ftp , I wouldnt bother with the wiki mirroring though. However you could run 3600 seconds on it, should you need to bring it back elsewhere in a hurry. [Dovecot] Having trouble getting Dovecot to read a ~/Maildir configuration

Hi folks Setting up a new server, hence a few software packages have been upgraded / changed. On my old server (only 2 years old) I was using Dovecot and RoundCube (web mail app) and had a good experience so was keen to use these again. The only major change is I have switched from sendmail to exim4 (which was installed by default on this Debian server). Exim4 appears to be doing the right thing, however read on and see if you can spot the error. I've tried two email clients, RoundCube (via apache) as a local connection and Evolution as a remote connection. Both appear to login to the Dovecot IMAP connection okay (log entries included further down), although they don't see any email. The INBOX is completely empty. Although when I check out /home/postmaster/Maildir/new it has many messages waiting to be read. It's like Exim4 is delivering the email into the ~/Maildir folder but Dovecot is not seeing it.... Hi all I hope to get some help on the separator. I am sure that I hava a wrong understanding what the separator is. I thaught the separator is the delimiter within the imap folder structure. Hello Since I've installed Dovecot 2 I've observed that TB does not notice new mails arrival in IMAP folders. When I click on a folder new mails count is updated, with dovecot 1 it was automatic. I wonder if it is due to the new TB version (lastest stable) or Dovecot 2 (2.0.11). I use MBOX format. Assume and e-mail address of: me+dovecot(a)domain.com I have a sieve script that sorts mail into the appropriate folders using "+" addressing. I want to extend it to also work with mailing list like this one. A post from the dovecot forum arrives with a Delivered-To: me+dovecot(a)domain.com when I receive it. The "To" is to dovecot. I cannot figure out a way to get sieve to filter on the "Delivered-To" portion rather than the "To" portion using plus addressing. There are several other names; i.e, john, joe, bill, nancy, etcetera that would have the plus suffix of (in this scenario anyway) dovecot. Filtering on each individual address would be a real PIA. I believe it is not supported though. EXAMPLE: This works fine when filtering on the "To" attribute: Assuming email address: me+dovecot(a)domain.com ## Plus Addressing if envelope :detail "To" "dovecot" {fileinto "Dovecot"; stop;} Unfortunately, I cannot substitute the "Delivered-To" attribute in place of the "To" one. I know and currently do sort based on the "List-ID" attribute; however, I have other reasons for wanting to sort only on the delivery address. We have quite a big turnover of guest users, so we often have to deprovision the allocated resources, that is the mailboxes. Given that the users are virtual, and that the mdbox directory is located in the home directory of each virtual user (static userdb), is it ok to simply delete (rm -rf) the home directory to get rid of the mailbox? [Dovecot] Running mailfront under dovecot2.x service supervision

Hello, Hello, I'm trying to run mailfront SMTP (http://untroubled.org/mailfront/) under Dovecot 2.x process/service supervision My intention was to utilize the fact that dovecot2.x seems to have some kind of generic process/service supervision as well as builtin ssl support. But I cannot get the most simple generic service setup (without ssl) to work. Currently running dovecot 2.0.11 on FreeBSD 8.1 service smtp-auth { executable = /usr/local/bin/smtpfront-qmail inet_listener smtp-auth { port = 587 ssl = no } } I have added the above to dovecot.conf Once I start dovecot everything seems fine - no errors in the log But at the first attempt to telnet to localhost port 587 - I instantly get the indication of never ending forks in the dovecot log (see below) - neither do I get the SMTP prompt that I expected in my telnet session - it just hangs. Here's what I tried to add at the bottom (in text mode) The {{{deliver_log_format}}} specifies logging details for a successful delivery. (versions>2.0.13: leaving it empty will disable this logging). Hello, I following the instrucions of: http://wiki2.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Permissions When the user receive the first mail, dovecot create the directory structure always using mode 0700, if i change the permission of the user maildir all new mails arrived get the correct umask: dovecot: lmtp(24960, *): Debug: Namespace INBOX.: Using permissions from .../maildir: mode=0770 The problem is: I need to all accounts have the permission 0770. Tried to use the option: mail_access_groups but doesn't work at all when the first creation of the user path. "For example a simple way to set up shared mailbox access for all system users is to make all mail dirs/files 0770/0660 mode and owned by group "sharedmail" and then set mail_access_groups=sharedmail. Using more fine grained groups of course leaks less mail data in case there's a security hole in Dovecot" Is a bug? My dovecot version: doveconf -n # 2.0.12 (811a6d173bb2): /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 x86_64 Debian 6.0.1 Access groups: mail_access_groups = _sysadms Thanks and sorry for bad english.

Hi Upgraded to 2.0.12 and when I restart I get this 'doveconf: Warning: SSL is disabled because global ssl=no, ignoring ssl=yes for subsection.' even though there is no subsection with ssl=yes. Regards Kilburn

Hello all, is there a way to make dovecot log the commands it gets from its clients both in imap and pop3? I need to log when messages are deleted so I can tell to the customer when and from which IP address his/her mailbox was emptied. [Dovecot] help with MYSQL and dovecot

Hello all: I understand I can't provide to much information; at the moment, I do not have dovecot installed. Here is the problem. I started out running saslauthd, but there appears to be a problem where memory isn't freed after someone fails to authenticate, which leads to a huge dos attack. I hit this problem a couple of times, and it looks like some poor lonely soul (or bot, as it may be) with no life decided to go after my server again today. I had previously tried to configure dovecot, but I have an odd mysql setup, so it was particularly dificult. I am leaving out of town tomorrow afternoon and will not have internet, so I want to make sure this is going to be running as it should be. Here is the info from the dovecot configuration file for mysql. It was giving an error about "username" when I tried to run this.
