Hi, I've got a problem with Dovecot 1.2rc7 and a Sieve script which should store eMails in a subfolder. When setting a CONTROL directory that does not exists (has to be created by dovecot upon first login) AND INDEX=MEMORY Dovecot POP3 will fail upon first login with 'Couldn't init INBOX: Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information.' [Dovecot] readdir and rename don't mix; patch included

Enclosed please find a patch to dovecot-1.1.16 that fixes a common problem we see under load on Mac OS X and HFS+. The symptom is that sometimes readdir() returns EINVAL. The problem is that readdir() and rename() don't mix well, and maildir_scan_dir() renames messages from new/ to cur/. The solution I chose is just to retry scanning the directory, since code to rescan is already present. An alternative solution would be to read the entire directory first, then process the contents; that is, to do all the readdirs before any renames. The patch is like Apple's previous ones, all tagged with /*APPLE*/ and formatted to simplify our merges. Please reformat it as you desire. Attached is a patch which in my environment (Linux/Heimdal 1.2.1) fixes cross-realm GSSAPI authentication. Changes it makes: 1. When using krb5_kuserok, do not call gss_compare_name to check that authn_name and authz_name are the same. Instead, make TWO calls to krb5_kuserok, one for each ID. If both IDs are acceptable, allow the login. 2. Disable checking that the name is a GSS_KRB5_PRINCIPAL_NAME, as this doesn't appear to be always the case for the authz_name. If I create a .k5login listing both username@REALM1 and username@REALM2, and make that file follow the appropriate security restrictions (world read, user only write permissions), this lets me use GSSAPI logins with principals from either REALM1 or REALM2. This leaves untouched the behavior in the case where krb5_kuserok is not available. Bryan Jacobs

Hello, I have this user that lost an email, even when the server is set up to do lazy expunge. Hello list, with dovecot 1.2 on AIX rquota RPC calls fail with quota-fs: remote ext rquota call failed: RPC: 1832-012 Program/version mismatch when using a netapp filer. This is what netapp says: Bug ID 97288 Title Support requested for rquota version 2 Bug Severity 5 - Suggestion Bug Status Closed Product Data ONTAP Bug Type NFS Description Linux has implemented its own extensions to the rquota protocol as a version 2 of that protocol. ONTAP only supports v1 as that is the only version defined by Sun, the owner of that RPC program number. Workaround - Fixed-In This bug is not scheduled to be fixed, you may opt to Version open a technical support case if you would like to contact Network Appliance regarding the status of this bug. A complete list of releases where this bug is fixed is available here. So this should be no AIX specific problem. Using the attached rquota.x fixes the problem. In addition you have to disable group quota checking by adding "user" to your "quota" definition. [Dovecot] troubles with broken clients (iPhone) - again

The PC (Outlook) is accessing the mailbox via POP3, the iPhone is using IMAP; please consider we are talking about a user's home setup, so it's pretty difficult to have a more detailed report on his part (Outlook version, iPhone OS version, xDSL router type and configuration, etc.). The mail server 'dovecot -n' output is attached. The symptoms: when the Mail application is "closed" on the iPhone, Outlook still says the mailbox is in use; a Dovecot imap process is still active for that user even after a few minutes (manually killing it releases the lock, thereby leaving the inbox available for Outlook). >From the client side, there is a seemingly relevant article at http://blogs.sun.com/chienr/entry/iphone_supports_imap_idle it describes, among others, the "Settings / Mail / Auto-Check" and "Settings / General / Auto-Lock" parameters; from my point of view, however, being able to solve the problem directly on the server would be far better, and might also accomodate other broken clients we haven't seen yet: that's why I asked you whether there is a way to tell Dovecot only one POP3 or IMAP process from the same user, the latest one, can be active at the same time, closing and disconnecting all the others. Set permissions on the mail folder to 2775 because dovecot runs as its own user and group and you need the mail file in that folder to accept writes from mail and from dovecot groups. Also in the config file dovecot.conf you need to specify if the files are maildir or mbox. They are probably mbox but try both for the error messages.

Hello Dovecot users, I hereby release new versions of the Sieve packages for the recently released Dovecot v1.2.0 (Congrats Timo!). Apart from small changes to make things compile with Dovecot again, a few other bugs were fixed as well. Unfortunately, the (FreeBSD-specific) 8kb script truncation bug remains. Although it is reported for Dovecot v1.1.16, I see no reason why it should not surface in v1.2.0 as well. Any help is appreciated. I'm thinking of upgrading my dovecot version to 1.2 so that I can use the Dovecot sieve plugin instead of the CMU Sieve plugin. My RPM repo for dovecot is ATrpms so I could get dovecot-1.2.0-0_95.el5.i386.rpm from the bleeding ATrpms repo. Would this be compatible with dovecot-sieve-1.1.6-9.el5.i386.rpm which is in the stable repo, or would I need to find a later dovecot-sieve version somewhere? Regards, Phill

System: Debian Testing, Postfix, Dovecot 1.2.0 (1.2.0-0~auto+7_i386.deb), Squirrelmail + Avelsieve Postfix delivers fine in my INBOX via mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver in main.cf. deliver seems not to use the existing sieve-script created and uploadet with avelsieve. I've tried searching the web and haven't been able to find a lot of information. Tried to copy the file so I could freely experiment with it but the copying hung up when it reached 87 % (the file is 1.1 GB). The copied part was unreadable. Tried to formail -ds < /var/mail/username >> /backup/usernameJul3 but with the same result. Is there a way to repair the synchronization of the mbox? Or at least a way to recover its content? ------------------------------------------------------- After that I also tried to "shutdown -F -r now" but to no effect. I was going to test 1.1.16 so as to see how it handles global ACLs (in the hope to have a possible comparison with 1.2.0's odd behavior), when I encountered the problem described hereafter. Note that just disabling ACLs is sufficient to get back a fully functional imap binary. I've completed the migration from Courier to Dovecot that has been running correctly, the only problem is that maildirsize file is not updated when you delete the emails, resulting in accounts that reach to 100% faster, so I have to manually delete this file. Tried to formail -ds < /var/mail/username >> /backup/usernameJul3 but with the same result. Is there a way to repair the synchronization of the mbox? Or at least a way to recover its content?

I have added (beta) Dovecot support for the OSSEC HIDs. It will detect certain attacks and error conditions, and optionally block the attacker (similar to fail2ban). Rather than re-hash the details here, I refer you to the OSSEC mailing list for details on how to install. I would appreciate any feedback either here, there, or privately. The idea is to get a few people trying it so I thought a post here would be good, too.

For now, I first "managesieve patch"/compile the source, go on to the old source folder and do a "make uninstall", switch back to the new source folder and do the "make install". From a performance perspective: Which Directory layout is better: 1. All mailboxes are stored in a single directory and prefixed with a dot or 2. Maildirs using physical directories, such as: Maildir/folder/subfolder/ It looks like the second option -- File Sytem Layout (LAYOUT=fs) -- could spread the load in a better way ...... I do not expect a user reaching maximum number of subfolders in linux , but what about those heavy users with a lot of sub-folders: Is there a significant performance gain by choosing a specific Directory Layout ... I would like to have one master dovecot instance that gets email, and a slave dovecot on my laptop. I use maildir, and I was thinking of doing this with unison, but I suppose dovecots indexes would go out of sync whenever I used unison. There seems to be a number of imap folder synchronizers, but I have heard they are troublesome. Any hints? -- Joakim Verona

I do not know if this is a help request to solve a problem but to understand what is going on. I am going to start with the problem description as I see it and we will go from there. I have postfix setup to use dovecot for tls/sasl in addition to its normal imap/pop3 functions. Postfix is also setup to do virtual domains, getting its information from the files valias, vmaps, and vhosts which are all located in its /etc/postfix directory: # Virtual domain stuff virtual_mailbox_domains = /etc/postfix/vhosts.txt virtual_mailbox_base = /var/spool/vmail virtual_mailbox_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/vmaps.txt # 1500:1500 is user virtual virtual_uid_maps = static:1500 virtual_gid_maps = static:1500 virtual_alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/valias.txt Dovecot uses its own unix passwd-like files to do authentication. In fact, as you can see, I broke them apart so I can make the actual password file readable only by root: mail_location = maildir:~/ auth default { passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot/passwd } userdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot/users } } I know the norm is to use a database or at least ldap, but I had my reasons. Mailscanner is also installed. So, the whay things have been working so far was, postfix receives an email and checks if it is recipient exists here. If so, it would pass it to mailscanner and then get it back, when it would then drop it at the recipient's mailbox in /var/spool/vmail/domain.com/user. A user would then connect to dovecot to retrieve the email. And when an email was to be sent, postfix would use dovecot to do the user authentication. So far so good. Now I want to add dovecot lda so I can run the cmu sieve plugin (this is dovecot 1.0.1) primarily to move emails mailscanner (and spamassassin) thinks that are spam to each virtual user's Spam maildir directory. It seems to me that postfix *or* dovecot went to /etc/dovecot/users looking for raub(a)domain.com. Not finding it there (I had it defined there as raub simply; I have mail_location = maildir:~/ in dovecot.conf, so the username in this file does not need to be related to the user's email address), it decided user does not exist and bounced back. My testing indicated that happened after postfix passed the email to dovecot lda (I guess that virtual_transport = dovecot means it goes to master.cf and looks for the dovecot entry and then passes the message to it). That would mean postfix is not using vmaps to see if the user exists anymore. Instead, it is delegating checking if a user exists to dovecot, which is not what I want to do. I want postfix to worry about getting mail and making sure the recipient exists. Out of the blue, if I replaced the virtual_mailbox entry with local_transport = dovecot, or nothing at all, mail is delivered as it should. My gut feeling is the master.cf dovecot entry is responsible for the problem, but I am not sure because I really do not know everything that is going on there; this is the first time I venture in that file. So, could anyone shed some light on what is causing the problem? Thanks!

Hi, As the "new Sieve implementation" is using a "gratefully stolen copy of deliver.c from dovecot" (i.e. a dirty code in mail-raw.c), would it be possible for the Sieve piece 1 - to be using files from dovecot directly rather than copying&changing it (which is very bad for maintenance) 2 - to be incorporated in the hg/mercurial tree of dovecot ? Hi, I want to calculate the bandwidth usage of the IMAP protocol. POP3 displays a message when the connection is closed about the transfered bytes. The issue is that our mail folder layout is still based on "elm" (hands up everyone who remembers that) and we store all the users folders in mbox format under a directory called Mail in their home directory. We've defined a namespace in dovecot called "" which knows to look there and will list all the folders. However, we have run uw-imap in the past so we have a hidden namespace that maps all the folders starting "Mail/" to the new namespace so that we didn't have to change any of the clients. Egroupware has a bunch of code that tries to guess what sort of IMAP server is on the other end based on what folders it can find. One of those checks is for "Mail" and when it finds it it assumes that's the place to go looking for folders rather than using what the Namespace command returned. I'm guessing that this was put in by someone with the same layout as we used to have with "elm" trying to overcome the lack of a configuration file in uw-imap. Our "Mail/" namespace doesn't list any folders and so felamimail can't see anything for the user. My temporary hack was to comment out all the IMAP server guessing code and that fixes the problem for us. Now I need to find out how felamimail deals with IMAP servers that can't have mail folders containing messages and subfolders (it's one or the other with dovecot using mbox) Jon.

Hi, sieve vacation replies are rejected by gmail with a "555 5.5.2 Syntax error". The return path is set to "<>", I think this is why this error is triggered by gmail. I'm wondering how one would go about configuring dovecot to invoke pam_setcred() from the same process as (or a parent process of) the process which eventually reads the user's mail off the disk. This is required for pam modules that set kernel-level credentials which are later used to access the user's mail files. In particular, I'm trying to use dovecot with pam_krb5 (which associates a ticket cache to a specific pid) and pam_afs_session (which associates tokens to a specific process authentication group -- roughly equivalent to a process and all its descendents). I was going to experiment with ACLs when I faced a small problem. It is just sufficient to enable the acl plugin for getting the behavior described hereafter. [Dovecot] No folders listed in felamimail

Egroupware 1.4.004 I thought I try and solve a long standing bug we've had with felamimail not listing folders from our dovecot server. Watching dovecot's packet dumps I'm seeing dovecot do a namespace call and the a list call. Felamimail does a namespace and gets back * NAMESPACE (("" "/")) NIL NIL which is how I've configured dovecot to keep the client configuration very simple. Now Felamimail does a LIST "" "" which gets no folders returned and is obviously why it won't show anything in the felamimail display. I was expecting felamimail to do something more like: LIST "" "%" or LIST "" "*" Is there something I need to configure to make felamimail happy with our dovecot configuration? We use dovecot with outlook express, thunderbird (1,2,3), Mozilla, squirrelmail, iPod, iPhone and symbian with no issues so I'm tending towards felamimail being the source of the problem. Jon.
