Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.0.0beta3 on a RHEL4 x86_64 server. But after putting this in production, it appears that when emails are retrieved, long ones always get truncated after a few kB, changing attachments into garbage :-( Has anyone seen this problem before? Any ideas what could be causing this? Hi, Using the exact same build of 1.0.beta3, one i386 and the other x86_64, I get segfaults upon startup with the x86_64 version when using the exact same dovecot.conf file. () The really weird part is that I've managed to get my dovecot.conf in a state where the problem no longer happens, but simply adding a line with '#', or removing trailing spaces (normally harmless) on some config lines makes the error re-appear. My quick guess would be that something is wrong with the config file parser on 64bit archs... Actually, I've just made some more tests, and it is "partially" reproducible on i386. In this part of my configuration : auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } userdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } } There is a trailing space on both "args = ..." lines. Well, if I remove them, I get this message with the i386 build. When I put them back, all is fine again. [Dovecot] Per-user "Seen" flags with shared namespace stored as maildir?

Hi all, I was wondering if the above was possible. I know that the "seen" flag is stored in the filename, but was wondering if anyone knew of a way to separate it out? I know this would strictly-speaking break maildir compatibility, but it would be extremely useful for shared folders. I've been given the task of replacing the (extremely heavily used) shared folders functionality of our Exchange server and have almost everything working. I have authentication working against AD, shared folders, per-user subscriptions, "mail enabled folder" functionality and seem to have sorted all the other permissions issues I've been having. Apart from a nice easy-to-use front end for changing folder permissions this is the last thing I can think of that I need to look into before I can show this to my boss. Hi all, for one of my developpements, I need to be able to connect an IMAP server with a login but without password. (I use dovecot 1.0.beta3) For the userdb, I use "userdb static" : userdb static { args = uid=114 gid=114 home=/mydev/mail/%u } But I don't know how to allow IMAP connection by my application without password. I won't connect to a database, having a user/password file or something like this ... I think to use "passdb checkpassword" to call a fake authentication script .... Anyone have a better idea ? Hi all, I am new in Dovecot. I wanna use Dovecot in the big mail system about 4 million active or passive users. We use recently Courier Imap, but search mails process is so slowly. I tried Dovecot that it is better then Courier so much. But I have a problem with integration Dovecot to my system. I am using some extra flags in mails to mark them from others. For example I use a private flag "M" to understand it that this mail come from us as newsletter. I make some changes in code, but unfortunately I could'nt add this flag to Dovecot correctly. [Dovecot] Shared namespaces

Hi all, I'm trying to replace the "Public Folders" functionality in Exchange server. At first I thought it'd be something easily do-able with an IMAP server so I immediately thought of Dovecot. I setup what I though would work and things started to go a little screwy with subscription settings and the like. I started off by making a public maildir folder (in /home/public/Maildir) and setting the namespaces up in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf like this: namespace private { separator = / prefix = INBOX/ location = maildir:%h/Maildir inbox = yes } namespace public { separator = / prefix = Public/ location = maildir:/home/public/Maildir inbox = no hidden = no } The folder /home/public/Maildir has owner root:users and mode 770, and the file dovecot-shared in there has the same owner and mode 660. I logged with Thunderbird as user 1 and everything seems to work fine. However, when I logged in as user 2 I was getting all kinds of errors. On checking the permissions of /home/public/Maildir/subscriptions it was user1:user1 with mode 600. So then I thought "well, I'll change it to user1:users 660 and then everyone should be able to change it". I was very wrong. Whenever someone changed it, the ownership changed to userx:userx 600. Even when I tried setting the ownership to root:users and mode to 640, anyone could change it and set it to their own name (thus preventing anyone else from using it). To be perfectly honest, I'd ideally like to give people separate subscription settings anyway. I thought about symlinking the folders in, but that makes it a manual process to add new folders to everyone's maildirs. Can anyone please give me any pointers? Hi, dovecot tries to use OpenSSL's PRNG to generate random numbers if there is no /dev/urandom found. Unfortunately, it is flawed in its present form, since the PRNG is not seeded before RAND_bytes() is called in src/lib/randgen.c (on systems which have /dev/urandom, OpenSSL automatically seeds its PRNG from the urandom device). Here's a patch to address this issue: it tries to seed the PRNG if there is no /dev/urandom present (which is likely the case if dovecot uses OpenSSL's RAND API). Is there anyway to get a message's filename through the imap server? I've been developing a program for awhile and just switched to dovecot from courier. [Dovecot] first crack at auto-trash plugin

I have written an alpha version of an auto trash plugin for dovecot. When compiled in any mail expunged from a non-Trash folder is moved to a folder named Trash. As of yet the folder is not created if it doesn't exist (the process fails before expunge). I would appreciate feedback of any sort. In addition, I am currently getting an error I haven't been able to puzzle out in the logs when it runs: Mar 21 15:22:01 david dovecot: imap(david(a)grayskies.net): Timeout leak: 0x807fad0 I see that it seems to relate to transactions somehow, but my few hours of playing with dovecot haven't given me the answer - so ideas/patches to the code would also be nice. [Dovecot] Method of archiving mail?

Hello I have a situation in which a number of users have 10,000+ messages in the maildir, going back a few years. I'm not a fan of this many files lying around so I'd like to set up some kind of archiving, but one that will allow user's access to the old mails should they wish to see them. I thought of a cron job trying to sift through messages pulling those what were older than x days, then writing some script to process a request from a user (date/time/from/to/subject/body text) and copy matching messages to a "query" folder in the maildir. However, a) I'm not good at this kind of thing, and b) I have a feeling it's already been done before. Can anyone point me in the right direction please... is their software around to do this already? Many thanks, Steve :)

Hi guys, I've got a client running 1.0.beta3 on SuSe 9.3 Everything has been running perfectly since it was installed about 6 months ago, but lately they've had issues with email clients not being able to connect to the IMAP server, until they close their clients(Thunderbird & Outlook) and then re-open them. They have roughly 70 users on their network, so it sounds like it could be too many active sessions at once, but I've tried changing a few things in the config, and so far nothing has resolved this. [Dovecot] Can Dovecot 'slurp' into the INBOX from a mail spool file?

Hi guys, I have a system whereby I am forced to deal with mbox files of /var/spool/mail/user1 (mbox text file) /var/spool/mail/user2 (mbox text file) etc Their mail homes are maildir format in: /home/user1/Maildir/{cur,new,tmp} /home/user2/Maildir/{cur,new,tmp} etc I can set things up so that the mbox inbox is shown using namespaces: namespace private { separator = / prefix = location = maildir:/home/virtual/%d/home/%n/Maildir/ } namespace private { separator = / prefix = mail/ inbox = yes hidden = no location = mbox:/home/virtual/%d/home/%n/mail/:INBOX=/home/virtual/%d/var/spool/mail/%n } This gives a rather odd folder structure as follows: INBOX Sent Drafts Trash mail/ --- INBOX myfolder1 myfolder2 Both of those INBOXes are actually the same folder. I'd ideally like to hide the mbox namespace entirely so that the user does not see any mbox folders. UW IMAP, with it's mbx format, allows you to just drop in a file called INBOX in mbx format and it will 'slurp' the /var/spool/mail/usersmbox file into the mbx INBOX. Has/could Dovecot have a similar feature whereby you specify a spool folder which is then 'slurped' into the local maildir INBOX? Not sure if I'm being clear enough here - do let me know if not! Hi, I have been running dovecot cvs happily for.. well.. very, very long now. Don't remember when I switched from 0.99, but it was back in the test-days, long before the alpha's. Anyway, it seems to have been working very well all the time. But recently three of my clients have claimed to have lost mail when moving from Thunderbird. I even experienced it myself once. I'm using Evolution 99% of the time, and have never seen any problems with that - but that doesn't mean the problem only occurs with Thunderbird. When moving mail from one folder to another, everything seems fine, except that the mail isn't in any folder anymore. Hi Steffen, I'm using procmail as my LDA and postfix as my MTA. Also, in my case I need all email to any email address at my domain starting with "pr" then some numbers to go into these folders. The reason for this is I'm trying to setup an open-source replacement for our mail-enabled Exchange Public Folders at the moment (can you believe you can't search sub-folders in Exchange Public Folders?!). First I created a fake user with it's own group: adduser public_folders Next, I added all the relevant users to that group: usermod -G public_folders john_smith usermod -G public_folders jon_doe Next, in /home/public_user/.procmailrc I put the following: MAILDIR=/home/public_folders/Maildir # If any mail gets through to this account without having a project number address, # put it in an "Unfiled" folder. Heh heh heh. Whoops. I've spent a few hours digging around in the source and nearly posted a kludge of a patch I'd written to give a kind of half-baked attempt at getting group-usable subscriptions files. Then I came across something in the source........ In the config file, do something like the following: namespace public { separator = / prefix = Public/ location = maildir:/home/public/Maildir:CONTROL=%h/Maildir/Public inbox = no hidden = no } Notice the "CONTROL=" part of the location line. This tells dovecot where to store "control" files (of which the "subscriptions" file is one). As you can see I have told it to put the control files in each user's home space. This means not only are there going to be no permission problems, but each user can have separate subscriptions (because everyone is using their own "subscriptions" file). Of course I could also have set the CONTROL dir to be something like "/home/public/Maildir/control/%u" so they would all be stored in one place, but I prefer the idea of having it in the user's home folder. After searching the wiki I don't see the CONTROL option explained anywhere. Is there any chance someone could add that in somehow (a link from the SharedFolders page would be extremely useful also). I'm having trouble getting dovecot lda to work. I'm using dovecot b3, and a dovecot lda cvs checkout, according to http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA I tr to use the .forward method: |"/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver" I also tried this line: "|/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -c /etc/dovecot.conf -d joakim" I get this error in maillog: stat=unknown mailer error 80 I tried running deliver from commandline, and it manages to add lines to my inbox then. -- Joakim Verona www.verona.se

Hi dovecot list users, currently we have some email accounts which get maintained by different people. If any of this users sends a mail, it is only saved on his local machine, but not on the imap server. But i'll need them to get saved on the mail server for backup purposes and that every user can see which mails have been sent through this account. Is this possible? Hi all I seem to be sitting with an interesting situation where by I need to copy mail from Exchange to dovecot (Maildir) I used a mixture of solution (Moz Thunderbird, fetchmail and outlook) to copy and test the mail. The interesting thing is, once I have some mail on the dovecot, the date displayed on Mozilla is correct, but the mail shown throught outlook, shows todays date (thats for all mail). I logged in squirrel mail, that too correctly displays the date. Almost seems as Outlook (office 2000) looks at the date / time stamp of the file it self as opposed to opening and reading the mail and reading the necassry tags. If anyone could help me understand this (is this a dovecot issue), I would really appreciate it. Kind Regards Brent Clark

Hi, I have noticed from logs that (only handful of occurrences during whole week) sometimes there is some kind of unrecognized event on handle and the branch with i_panic() in ioloop-kqueue.c:io_loop_handler_run() catches it. This patch allows the i_panic() to print some more info about the nature of the unrecognized event so that I can find out what it is about. Since it is really rare event I ask anybody who sees Dovecot dying with "Unrecognized event" in logs to try this patch and report back with the output if it triggers again. The patch is against version 1.beta3. Hey guys, I've got dovecot configured to work perfectly for virtual users across different domains. It's great. My problem is that, as far as I can tell, dovecot makes me use one SSL certificate across all my domains. That's not what I want. Is there a way I can get dovecot to use the cert for mail.foo.com when somebody is logging into a foo.com account, and the cert for mail.bar.com when somebody is logging into a bar.com account? Am I missing something obvious, or asking the impoosible?

Thanks for everybody's tips on the mbox to maildirs converter. I was unaware that Maildirs was a common format not specific to dovecot, so I was searching using a dovecot keyword. I'm having this problem now with inboxes. I want to use maildirs, but my mail is delivered to an mbox. I can't seem to get dovecot to recognize the inbox location. Is something like: maildir:%h/Maildir:INBOX=/var/mail/%u impossible to use? What I'm trying to do is slowly merge people from mboxes to maildirs, so I have to use the passwd file per user maildirs settings with some sort of recognizeable inbox. I migrated from UW IMAP, copied ~/.mailboxlist to ~/mail/.subscritions When I access SquirrelMail, is sees the folders on the left side. If I modifiy my folder subscription, they dissappear all but INBOX, and the .subscriptions file gets deleted. What am I missing. Thanks Bertrand Leboeuf

hello johannes, i just discovered your wonderful plugin for dovecot. it was pretty much exactly what i was looking for, only that i didn't know that yet :) "Instead of moving mail into special folders, the user has two actions available: moving it out of the SPAM folder and moving it into the SPAM folder. Hello, I've attached a patch that adds an additional expando to pop3_uidl_format. The additional expando (%M) expands to the md5sum of the filename (which is already available via %f.) This UIDL style is compatible with tpop3d when using Maildir. The patch is against dovecot 1.0 beta3, and I'd love to see it be merged into the official tree. I would like to have the ability to execute a command on a folder based on a user doing something like copying a message to that folder. This could be accomplished with a config file directive. For example, this would be EXTREMEMLY useful as a spam learning hook. Take a scenario where each user has their own spamassassin bayes database, and you want to give the users the ability to train their own database based on what they think is SPAM. It would be nice to give all the users a folder called Spam, and tell them to just copy/move mail into that folder, and spamassassin will automatically learn about it. If we had a configuration hook where you could execute on a copy/move, then I could tell Dovecot whenever a user puts a message into the Spam folder, execute 'sa-learn --spam --file %s' on that message. Sure we could just do an external script in a cron job to do it every hour or something, which I'll probably do in the mean time, but often users will just delete messsages after they copy into it. Doing it through IMAP means spamassassin will learn about it immediately. How cool would that be? It seems like an easy hook to implement. I would like to patch it myself for my own use, but I'm not very proficient in C. I saw someone on the net patched Courier to do the same thing so I know I'm not alone in wanting this. Anyone know how I could patch it? Can we add that to the feature request list? ~Adam

The feedback the command gives is $ ./convert-tool Fatal: Usage: <username> <home dir> <source mail env> <dest mail env> Why does the tool want a home directory? What does it look for there? I know you say the syntax is the same for other tools but I don't know it for them yet either. :-) Guessing at the syntax for the source, it looks like the first thing is the format of the source (mbox:) followed by a directory containing mbox format files. The INBOX portion specifies the location of the mbox that the MDA puts incoming messages into. I can see the variables defined in doc/variables.txt, got that already. Is it intended to run both directions? That is, if I swap the last two args is will it convert maildirs into mboxes? [Dovecot] auto move of purged mail to trash

I am moving a courier installation over to Dovecot and I am wondering if there is a way to set Dovecot to automatically move purged items to trash (under IMAP). Additionally, is there a way to automatically delete old items from a Trash folder? -David

My mistake, good point. I thought that creating the indexes would take a long time, but after a couple of tests, I found that Dovecot is so fast that it beats UW IMAP even while creating the indexes and after that, it is just fast. I migrated from UW IMAP/Qpopper to Dovecot using: # indexes on /var/indexes is faster: local, not NFS mouted default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/indexes/%u # Qpopper pop3_reuse_xuidl = yes The new mail is sent to in /var/mail/%u in mbox format How can I migrate some users to maildir and have them receive their emails either in POP3 or IMAP. [Dovecot] LDA Sieve debugging

Hello all, I've installed and setup the LDA with postfix. I'm trying out Sieve support, and wrote the following global script: require "fileinto"; if address :contains "To" "luca(a)mydomain.tld" { fileinto "Spam"; } and tried to send an email to that address. The sieve script seems to be processed and sieve-global.scriptc is compiled, but the message is not filed in the correct folder. [Dovecot] PAM authentification problem

Hi everybody, we try to migrate our IMAP service from uw-imap to dovecot because of horrible server slowdown when a lot of people poking in theirs huge imap folders. So, I try to run testing instance of dovecot on different imap port (12143) I have trouble with authentication by PAM module of MIT Kerberos. It successfuly works for authentificate users of wu-imap but not for dovecot. So, line "shadow ... invalid password field" is OK (when I made a local password in shadow the login was success) My dovecot.conf looks like: sl_disable = yes protocol imap { listen = *:12143 } auth_default_realm = FZU.CZ auth_verbose = yes auth_debug = yes auth_debug_passwords = yes auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb pam { } userdb passwd { } user = root } original /etc/pam.d/dovecot I introdused by lines auth sufficient pam_krb5.so auth required pam_unix2.so use_first_pass nullok or tryed to substitute whole file pam.d/dovecot by actualy working one of imap: #%PAM-1.0 auth sufficient pam_krb5.so auth required pam_unix2.so use_first_pass nullok auth required pam_unix2.so account required pam_unix2.so but similary fruitless. Which direction I have to dig? P.S. Dovecot was built from dovecot-1.0.beta3-6.src.rpm on SuSE 9.0 with the same result like from dovecot-1.0.beta3.tar.bz2 :(

[Dovecot] Install/configure on FC4 with maildir and mysql

Hello, I have a FC4 x64 server that I am configuring/testing. It had dovecot 0.99 loaded after I did a yum update. That worked great with mbox, the passwd file, and test users in /home/users/username. I would like to be able to authenticate virtual users by 'username(a)domain.com' and have them be able to use squirrelmail or Outlook/Outlook Express to access their email. Users have no reason to have a login (shell) account on this machine. I also would like to use the maildir format for performance. I also have hundreds of users currently on a RH9 mail server using qpopper in mbox format, hashed mail spool. Questions: 1)Is a mysql database the best way to support "user(a)domain.com" email users? (they don't have any reason for a shell account on this machine) 2)What version of dovecot should I be using? I prefer RPMs and at http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-February/011467.html I found http://fedora.ivazquez.net/yum/4/x86_64/RPMS.alternatives/dovecot-1.0-0.iva… I installed this and then configured procmail for maildir delivery. I configured dovecot-sql.conf for mysql driver...but the mysql driver does not appear to be compiled in this rpm. 3)Anyone have any general tips on how to configure such a beast? Thanks, Curt
