[Dovecot] Something other than dotlock for uidlist locking?

If I read the code correctly, only dotlocks are supported for locking of dovecot-uidlist. And I don't see any settings in the config file for it. As it turns out, dotlocks are very slow on my system, due to their implementation via hardlinks. Would it be possible to support other locking mechanisms for locking of the uidlist file? -jdb

[Dovecot] POP (dot) locks

Hello, just to soothe my paranoia from many years of qpopper usage, which enforces solitary access to a POP mailbox. Only one login per user is possible at the same time and if a session terminates w/o qpopper being properly notified it will remain locked for some time, 30 minutes by default. With dovecot (0.99.10.4) one can login multiple times (using POP, with IMAP of course this comes as no surprise :) and thus I presume this bit from the configuration: --- # Should we create dotlock file even when we want only a read-lock? Setting # this to yes hurts the performance when the mailbox is accessed simultaneously # by multiple processes, but it's needed for reliable reading if no other # locking methods are available. #mbox_read_dotlock = no --- means that if the only other reading accesses to a (mbox style in this case here) mailbox are via other dovecot processes everything will be fine? Hi there We are trying to move over from 1 IMAP server to another, but the problem is dovecot does not allow .'s in folder names (and we have quite a number of people who do have .'s in their folder names (ie "www.domain stuff") Is there anyway of allowing dovecot to allow .'s in folder names? [Dovecot] Using mbox INBOX with Maildirs?

Thanks for everybody's tips on the mbox to maildirs converter. I was unaware that Maildirs was a common format not specific to dovecot, so I was searching using a dovecot keyword. I'm having this problem now with inboxes. I want to use maildirs, but my mail is delivered to an mbox. I can't seem to get dovecot to recognize the inbox location. Is something like: maildir:%h/Maildir:INBOX=/var/mail/%u impossible to use? What I'm trying to do is slowly merge people from mboxes to maildirs, so I have to use the passwd file per user maildirs settings with some sort of recognizeable inbox. I'm using sendmail as my mail server. Do I have to tell that to put the mail in the right inbox format? Thanks. __________________________________ Discover Yahoo! So if users use squirrelmail, they can just login with their email addresses. My question is how to achieve the same thing with other MUAs like Outlook? Do I have to modify dovecot source? Can I use LDAP or SQL instead? Note that we are using Sendmail and prefer it than othe MTA. I have looked at the Wiki, specially the "DovecotOpenLdap" but am still confused. Thanks Zoong

Hi, I am running dovecot 0.99-14 on a Fedora Core 2 machine. I had a few questions: 1) I wanted to upgrade to the dovecot-1.0 release. However, I am not sure if that's really required. dovecot-0.99-14 has been running very well for me for quite some time. Is there a real advantage to switching to the latest release. The reason I'm asking this is because: i) I don't have too many users to server - around 15 only. ii) My mail server is a pretty fast machine (~1 GHz, 1 GB RAM) machine, so hardware isn't too much of an issue. iii) I like to install software from rpm's. It's not that I can't install from source, but installing from rpm's makes it much easier for me. Just a personal preference. The version of dovecot that I am running was obtained from Dag Wieers web site. I haven't seen a newer version there. I've googled for rpm's for newer versions, and they are available, but I don't want to install it from some third party source that I don't know/trust. iv) I am also planning to support web mail for my users (probably through Squirrelmail). Are there any advantages/disadvantages to upgrading dovecot for that? v) People use Mozilla Mail, Mail.app, Thunderbird, Outlook, and Opera. Does the 1.0 version provide better integration with different mail clients (even though I understand that sometimes it's a problem with the client implementation). So, are there newer version of dovecot (1.0-stable) available in rpm formats which are guaranteed to be safe and un-trojaned? And is there any really good reason why I should upgrade to 1.0-stable? 2) My second question is about creating the .subscriptions (or subscriptions in 1.0) file. When I moved people over from using pine to using a mail client like Evolution/Thunderbird, I had to create .subscriptions/.mailboxlist file for them so that they could see the folders that they had created in pine. However, people still sometimes access e-mail using pine. They then create new folders in pine, which they are unable to see in their mail client. Is there a way around it? This occurs especially when people check their mail at the start of the month, and pine asks about saving/deleting old sent-mail folders, Trash folders. Is there a way to add these folders automagically to the .subscriptions file? 3) Would I be able to support web mail using mailboxes in mbox format, as I have them now? Or do I have to go for Maildir format? Since our university introduced web mail, they have had two sets of folders - one with capitalization (Sent, Deleted Messages, etc.) and one without (sent-mail, etc. - these were from our pine days). Is this due to web mail? Also, if I do need to convert from mbox to Maildir, what is the standard tool for doing that? I saw at least three different tools/scripts for doing that (mbox2maildir,mb2d,mb2md-2,mb2md.pl, .. ). Which tool (and from where) should I use to convert mailboxes without problems? [Dovecot] Hang in 1.0.alpha4

My IMAP client hangs intermittently. When it does, Dovecot has prematurely stopped sending a response and entered the poll loop. My client is waiting for more data and Dovecot is waiting for an IMAP command. This problem seems to occur when I connect to the dovecot process over the network and when I run the imap binary directly via an SSH tunnel. Below is truss output from the imap process for one of the hangs. It is responding to a FETCH, gets EAGAIN, and then seems to give up sending the rest of the message and enters the poll loop. Below that is the log from my IMAP client to show its side of the story. Nothing shows up in the normal Dovecot log. I haven't caught it in the act recently when running with rawlog. Hi, I'm having trouble as of about noon today. I noticed I wasn't getting any new messages in Thunderbird. I restarted it and still nothing. I looked at the log, and found nothing from dovecot for a long time (since perhaps noon today). I restarted dovecot, but still it didn't get me new mail. I finally removed dovecot.* in my Maildir folder and restarted dovecot. I'm using 1.0alpha4. [Dovecot] checkpassword authentication

Hi, does anyone already use the checkpassword authentication scheme? I have not found any description how I have to configure dovecot in order to work together with qmails checkpassword. Enabling passdb = checkpassword /bin/checkpassword in dovecot.conf starts /bin/checkpassword for every authentication request, but the result does not seem to matter for the authentication. Without enabling a userdb entry, dovecot claims not to be able to find out the uid, gid and home of the user, although checkpassword replies these values. Setting static values with "userdb = static uid=$fixed_mail_uid gid=$fixed_mail_gid home=/maildata/%d/%n" results in being every login successful, no matter if the checkpassword authentication is ok, or not. I'm using the latest dovecot nightly build from 22. Nov. 2005. - Florian

[Dovecot] "Out of memory" error in 1.0alpha3

Hi All, I have Dovecot 1.0 Alpha3 running on x86_64 Linux 2.6 multi-CPU box using Maildir folders. Moving messages from one folder to another in Thunderbird 1.0.7, regardless of their size (usually small), produced error 83, "Out of memory", when both of these parameters were unset (default): mail_read_mmaped, mmap_disable. The log line before the error was pool_system_malloc(): Out of memory. I initially changed mmap_disable to "yes", the error stopped, but it still wasn't moving messages reliably. I then set MM parameters more aggressively: mail_read_mmaped = yes, mmap_disable = no (and the third of the series, mmap_no_write, is left unset). The error stopped popping up, and the moving works speedily. Maybe the default for mail_read_mmaped should be "yes?" Thank you! Sergey.

This is Timo's code, not mine. All I did was manually edit in the rejects from the old patch. [Dovecot] Dovecot login hangs often

Hi - We have dovecot version : 0.99.11 release : 2.EL4.1 on Centos 4.2, with an LDAP backend (Samba PDC) and pam set to authenticate against LDAP. Dovecot is set to use pam for authentication. It uses mbox, and the machine has very little load (95% idle, no memory pressure). Every 36 hours or so, no users are able to login to imap (we have only imap enabled). Other services that use the same backend are working fine (like squid and ssh logins) even while this is happening. So we are not sure if we can blame this on pam/ldap problems. When this happens, we tried a "service dovecot restart", and that results in saying the "address is in use". About 10 "imap-login" processes seem to lurk around holding on to the imap port. We can get dovecot service to start again, only after a "killall -9 imap-login". What kind of debug should we enable so that you all can diagnose this further ? Any other configuration things that we should try ? We prefer to stay with Redhat/Centos releases, but if this is already reportedly fixed in one of the later builds, we are open to trying one. Hi, I found that dovecot have many nice features. Now I write because I'm tring to setup the dovecot server, I would substitute a qpopper daemon (patched for mysql authentication) The problem I find is to set up the pop-before-smtp using sql (mysq) as written in http://wiki.dovecot.org/moin.cgi/PopBSMTPAndDovecot (Waiting for post_login ;-) I would use the script popbsmtp.sh and not a perl pig. (I'm using qpopper patched to store the relay IP in mysql and it works) I set .my.cnf in /root What happen is that the $3 don't contain the IP that should be written to the DB. Is there something I miss ? I tried to modify the dovecot.conf file like this mail_executable = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/popbsmtp.sh /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 %r "%r" and it write to the db the litteral value %r and not the ip, otherwise it write nothing. the connection with mysql works and any other operation on it works. this should be the last step for my setting. hi all, this is needed to make the pop3_reuse_xuidl option work in 1.0alpha4. I am using maildir and I noticed that for each message which doesn't have an indexed X-UIDL header, the entire message is read from disk. as this is reading only headers, it is probably reasonable to stop reading at the end of the headers. it would also be neat if dovecot could be configured to only try reading X-UIDL headers from messages if the mailbox indexes don't exist, since I guess it would be common to want to preserve existing X-UIDLs but not bother for new messages (perhaps some mtime comparison, or something). opinions? I haven't looked at the source enough yet to be able to do this, but these two optimizations would vastly reduce the amount of disk IO as a result of using this option. grant. Hi list! I'm a little confused. I have set "login_process_per_connection = yes" and "login_processes_count = 1", and this is how my pstree looks when nobody is connected: dovecot -,- dovecot-auth `- imap-login However, when I connect with a client it looks like this: dovecot -,- dovecot-auth |- imap `- 2*[imap-login] I would expect it to only have one imap-login running. Anyway, when I disconnect the client, the imap process exits but imap-login keeps running: dovecot -,- dovecot-auth `- 2*[imap-login] This is when it gets really wierd. When I connect a client again, my pstree looks like I would have expected it to on my first connect: dovecot -,- dovecot-auth |- imap `- imap-login If I re-connect, we start over again (i.e. dovecot-auth, imap, 2 * imap-login). [Dovecot] Feature/bug starting from xinetd

Hi, I hate to have my first post be a bug, but this drove me crazy for a while. I compiled the latest version from source and followed the instalation instructions. I then copied the xinetd.d entries from the Wiki and proceded to test. No matter what I did I could not log on. I found that while I was editing /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf, nothing was hapening. I then started it manualy and found several errors in my editing. :-) After fixing the errors and getting it to work properly, I went back to running it from xinetd. It would not allow me to log on, nor would it use any of the loging options I set. After making a symlink from /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf to /etc/dovecot.conf, it worked perfectly. My suggestions: 1. Change the Wiki to point out the difference in the config file location. 2. Change the inetd version to default to /usr/local/etc. 3. Hello, I built a Fedora 4 sendmail server to replace our old one. I wanted to try the stock Dovecot popper (we currently use pop3d). I tried implementing Dovecot this morning and failed. All I want to use is the POP portion (no IMAP). From what I could find on the Internet, all I had to do is change dovecot.conf protocols line to read like this: protocols = pop3 Apparently, that wasn't enough. Here are the errors I saw in maillog: Oct 31 07:54:23 sendmail dovecot: child 25511 (pop3) returned error 89 Oct 31 07:54:24 sendmail pop3(cliffhayes): mbox: Can't create root IMAP folder /home/cliffhayes/mail: Permission denied Oct 31 07:54:24 sendmail pop3(cliffhayes): MAIL environment missing and autodetection failed (home /home/cliffhayes) Now, I did find out that I had a permissions problem with /var/spool/mail (I had done an SCP of all our users to var/spool/mail on new box). All user mailboxes had root/root as user/group. I know how to fix that for next time, but why is it trying to use a home directory (we don't use those)? And what MAIL environment is missing? Do I need to mess with the following settings: # default_mail_env = maildir:/var/mail/%1u/%u/Maildir # default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u # default_mail_env = mbox:/var/mail/%d/%n/:INDEX=/var/indexes/%d/%n Thanks, Cliff

Hi all, I've 4 servers with dovecot and ldap authentication behind a loadbalancer (Alteon). To connect to dovecot, client need to use a vip of the loadbalancer. To connect to the ldap server, dovecot need to use the loadbalancer cause there are several ldap server. The loadbalancer close a connection without activity during 30mn Dovecot lauch several authentication process who have a connection to the ldap server each. Each client (user) have several imap connection to dovecot. I've 2 problemes : - If a client (thunderbird for ex.) don't use a connection during 30mn, the loadbalancer delete this connection from his connection table and the client seem not able to correctly reopen another - If a dovecot authentication proccess want to request ldap but haven't do it in the last 30mn, it fail an say that the authentification fail. [Dovecot] New mailbox format

I've been doing some thinking on a new better mailbox format that'd be faster than mbox and maildir for most common uses. Comments welcome. It won't come to Dovecot v1.0, but I'll probably create another branch to Dovecot CVS where I'll start implementing it and some other possibly destabilizing changes. Generic ------- The point is to have a mailbox format where the mailbox can consist of one or more files. Grouping multiple files in a single file makes it faster to read, but it's slower to expunge mails from the beginning of the file. So this format would allow sysadmin to specify rules on how large the files would be allowed to grow. This format is mostly designed to work nicely with separate index files such as Dovecot has. The flags are stored in the mailbox files mostly as a backup in case the index gets lost or corrupted. Index File ---------- Named "index". Index file gives a mapping between UIDs <-> filenames: Header: <uidvalidity> <last-used-uid> Record: <uid-first> <uid-last> <filename> Record: .. eg.: 1127468129 5 1 3 msg.1 4 4 msg.4 All of the UIDs don't have to actually exist in the file if they have been expunged. The record should be removed once all of the UIDs have been removed from it (and the file itself been deleted). The same file may appear multiple times in the index. For example: 1 2 msg.1 3 3 msg.3 4 5 msg.1 This means that UIDs 1, 2, 4 and 5 are in file msg.1, but UID 3 is in file msg.3. The filename doesn't matter as long as it's unique, but probably wouldn't hurt to include its first UID in the filename so humans can find mails more easily. The filename however must not end with ".lock". The file is modified by creating first exclusively owned "index.lock" file, updating it and then rename()ing it over the index file. This lock file shouldn't be held for a long time, so if it exists, and it doesn't get modified at all within 30 seconds, it can be overwritten. Before rename()ing over the index file, you should check with stat() that the index.lock file is still the same as you expect it to be (in case your process was temporarily stopped for over 30 secs). The index file's mtime timestamp must grow after each modification. This makes it easy to check if new mail has been added to the mailbox. Mail File --------- File header: Bytes Format Description 8 hex Header size 16 hex Append offset 4 hex Mail header size 4 hex Mail header padding 4 hex Keyword count in mail headers Mail header: Bytes Format Description 8 hex UID 16 hex Mail size 1 1/0 Answered flag 1 1/0 Flagged flag 1 1/0 Deleted flag 1 1/0 Seen flag 1 1/0 Draft flag 1 1/0 Expunged flag n 1/0 Keywords The file layout then goes: <File header> - possible padding due to Header size <Mail header #1> - possible padding due to Mail header size <Mail data #1> - possible padding due to Mail header padding (ie. next Mail header's offset is divisible with Mail header padding) <Mail header #2> etc.. The UIDs must be ascending within the file (but as said above, some UIDs between them may exist in other files). When the file is opened, it must be shared locked with flock(). Expunging mails requires exclusive flock(), so expunges can't happen while someone is still reading the file. Mails can however be marked with expunged-flag, and such mails should be treated as if they are already expunged. Expunged flag must not be removed. If the mail for some reason is wanted to be un-expunged, it must be copied as a new mail with new UID to the mailbox. Modifying flags doesn't require any locks. You'll simply write over those flags you wish to change. That's why each flag takes one byte. Safest way to expunge is to copy all non-expunged mails after the first expunged one to new file. Then update the index file with the new location for the UIDs, and at last ftruncate() at the position of first expunged mail in the original file. Alternative way to expunge is to just move the data over the expunged mails and fruncate() at the end. No index file updates necessary. This is more filesystem quota friendly, but if the expunging gets aborted in the middle it will corrupt the mails. Appending mails can be done by either locking existing file with a dotlock and appending to it, or creating a new file. If appending to existing file, also flock() it so expunging won't happen in the middle of append. If appending to new file, create it with .lock suffix and then check that the file without .lock wasn't already just created. When appending to existing file, check "Append offset" from file's header. If that offset is at the end of file, just append there. Otherwise read the mail's header from there. If it has a non-zero UID and index file says that the same UID exists in this file, jump over the mail and do the same checks for all the rest of the mails in the file. Once the check doesn't match or you reach EOF, update the append offset in the header to that offset and write your mail there. Initially write the UID in mail's header as zeroes ('0', not NUL). Once the append is completely finished, you'll have to update it with the new UID. You'll do this by locking index file, reading the latest last-used-uid and using the next value for your UID. Once you've written it, rewrite the index file with updated last-used-uid field and your UID added to it. After this, update the append offset in the mail file and unlock it. Keywords file ------------- Named "index.keywords". This contains mappings between keyword numbers and names. TODO: may be problematic with lockless flag writes.. Recent file ----------- "index.recent.<uid>" file tells what the last non-recent UID was. The file doesn't have any data inside it. When opening the mailbox you should find and rename() the existing index.recent.<uid> file to the new index.recent.<last-uid>. A successful rename() means the mails between <uid>+1 .. <last-uid> are recent for you. A failed rename() means that someone else managed to do it. You should look for the file again and if it was renamed to less than <last-uid>, you should try again. Nightly cleanups ---------------- Because expunged mails may be left lying around for a while, there probably should be some nightly check that cleans them up. Other cleanups that may be necessary after crashes are: - .lock files - expunged data at the end of files (can be checked with same rules as how appending determines the offset where to append) One problem with nightly expunging is how to expunge mails if the file is still locked by some process. Forced shutdowns may be annoying to users and can be difficult to implement.. Alternative locking strategy ---------------------------- The locking strategy as described above is optimized for high concurrency: Only if mail file is in the middle of being expunged, we're waiting on locks. With appending we may be waiting for existing appends to finish if we don't wish to create a new file for some reason. Other than those, reading and flag updating are completely lockless. The two downsides to this are: 1. flock() isn't available everywhere. It could however be replaced with fcntl() if that's available. NFS may not have either. 2. Expunges can't happen while multiple processes are accessing the mailbox at a same time. This may be a problem if the mailbox never has less than two processes accessing it. The alternative to flock()ing would be to simply handle unexpected end-of-file reads as a sign of expunge, which would require re-reading index file to see where the mails went (or if they were really expunged). This has two problems however. One is that flag writes couldn't catch expunges without locking, and another is that if you've already sent half a mail to IMAP client, you have no other choice than to disconnect the client if you can't send the rest of the mail. It might be worth it optionally. Especially for NFS people. Then you'd basically have the dotlock file that locks appends, expunges and flag updates. Reading would still be lockless. Also for the best performance the mail flags could be stored only in Dovecot's index files. In that case there's no need to update flags and the only downside with this locking strategy would be the potential disconnections, which probably aren't all that bad. Compatibility ------------- If needed, it would be possible to create new/ and tmp/ directories under the mailbox to allow mail deliveries to be in maildir format. The maildir files would be then either just moved or maybe be appended to existing mail files.

Hi, I'm relatively new to dovecot, less than 48 hours, and I've ran in to a few bugs in the installation/configuration process. Here's my set up. I have my own domain. Within the domain, I have a couple of Linux boxes. So I control both my primary and secondary mail servers. My Linux boxes are a mixture of SuSE 9.2, 9.3 and 10.0 (All based on age of the hardware.) I'd like to use Postfix for my MTA, which I have up and running, but I'd also like to add an IMAP server (hence dovecot) so I can get my mail from any of my PCs and my blackberry.) On my main mail server, I have KDE running and it uses ~/Mail/inbox/(cur,new,...) When I tried to use KDE on my other Linux server, I got it to authenticate and I could see the folders, but I couldn't see any of the mail. (Its all in cur subdirectory.) Now I did notice that when Postfix gets a mail message, its placed in /var/spool/mail/msegel which would imply its using an mbox format. So what am I missing? System accounts have their mail stored as follows: default_mail_env = maildir:/home/%u/Maildir While virtual users have this: default_mail_env = maildir:/htdocs/virtual/spool/%d/%u/Maildir Now, virtual users can login because I have used their $default_mail_env in my configuration. [Dovecot] After restart dovecot do not serves IMAPS anymore

I had to restart computer yesterday and now Dovecot has strange behaviour. Dovecot is running and should serve IMAPS, but client Mozilla Thunderbird cannot connect. I tried openssl s_client -connect localhost:993 and it said only CONNECTED(00000003). A time ago when everything was OK, the listing after connection was "a bit" longer than it is now. I remember there was "OK, dovecot ready" or something like that. Now, there is none. Of course in /etc/dovecot.conf: protocols = imaps imaps_listen = * ssl_disable = no So, what's the problem?

I see in the config file where I can enable syslog, but then all logging goes to the MAIL facility. I could find no reference to changing the facility:level for syslogging. Is that implemented, or planned? I know I could just write it to a file, but I'd prefer to use syslog because then I can pipe it to a central logging server.

I am using qmail-ldap to provide virtual users to my system, but I also have some shell users on the system as well. Virtual users go into /home/vmail/mailstore/$username/ System users go into /home/$username/Maildir How can I have both of these available as inboxes in dovecot using ldap logins? Greetings, recently I've been writing a database driver module for Dovecot to use SQLite. It's mostly for my own use, but I do recall other people have asked for this. Firstly - Timo, I grow to love your work more and more every day. :) I have not had any trouble figuring out what is needed of the driver, even without any API documentation. However, the one part of the driver that's given me pause has turned out to most likely be unnecessary. Whilst I was trying to work out how to deal with the sql_result->get_values() call without leaking memory, it seemed an odd method to have along side the other calls. So I decided to look for where it was used, to try to understand. Only, it isn't. The _only_ point I can find in the sources that calls that method is in the Postgress SQL driver. Mail storage is NOT nfs mounted. I'm on Solaris 9. Any ideas? -- Andy

[Dovecot] Question on moving folders

Is there a way to move an imap subfolder up one level? I have a bad mouse and every now and then I have accidentally dragged an imap folder on top of another folder. I am unable to get the original folder back up one level. I've tried using several clients and I can't get it to work with dovecot. I keep getting a "folder already exists" message. I'm guessing dovecot still sees the original folder before it was moved. Any tips... besides getting a new mouse? -- Andy

[Dovecot] dovecot 1.0.alpha4 hangs at auth

I'm using dovecot 1.0.alpha4 on a freebsd 5.3 i386 system. Dovecot is configured to use mysql authentication and I'm running mysql 5.0.15 . Everything works fine, but after a period of inactivity (20-30 minutes ) when I connect and try to authenticate it just hangs. Another question would be why read(4, "", 478) returns 0 ? this means that the server closed connection right ? why would the auth server close the connection with the auth worker ? I had a similar problem with dovecot 0.99 but there I got a "login failed" error message immediately , with 1.0alpha4 it just hangs. I also used a nightly cvs snapshot and the problem is there too. [Dovecot] Graceful shutdown

Hello all, I am running Dovecot v1alpha4 on Fedora 4 from the command line (as opposed to deamon). Is there a recommended way to shut it down gracefully? Or do I just use killall -9 dovecot? I'm not using the included version, so I can't do SERVICE DOVECOT STOP. Thanks, Cliff

[Dovecot] Problem with openldap+nscd+dovecot

Hi, I'm having a problem with this setup: RHEL4 U4.2(Centos) + openldap + nscd The problem I see is that for some reason, after a couple of hours dovecot stuck in the auth procress. I do a : telnet localhost imap Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK dovecot ready. 1 login user pass (here is the delay) After passing a username/password, the process is like stuck for some reason. I have to killall dovecot processes and do a: service dovecot restart and it work again. I have 1.5GB left on the disk and this problem just appeared now after month of working correctly. Could it be the disk space? How can I debug the problem? Should I migrate de 1.0alpha4? Does alpha4 have a new code in the authentication phase?
