Hi all. I'm making a case to use Dovecot over Courier and would like some feedback. I've searched the web extensively and have been unable to find any hard information regarding Dovecot's IMAP performance. I've got some pressure to use Courier but my gut tells me that Dovecot should be much faster. In particular, I will have typical users with mailboxes exceeding 10,000 emails and in some cases up to 100,000. Courier might be the "safe" choice but I'm not confident it can handle inboxes with that many messages. Dovecot, with its indexes, should be much, much faster. Can anyone point me to some benchmarks or production uses of dovecot that bear this out? From my research, Courier maildrop appears to be what I need for local delivery. Is it possible to use Maildrop for local delivery with Dovecot? Or is the Dovecot LDA needed to update the maildir indexes? I also need the capability for users to set their own vacation messages via a web page. Maildrop looks to handle this easily (by allowing me to link the maildrop filter to a file with the vacation message) but I don't see similar capability with the Sieve plugin. I do see where I can create a vacation message with Sieve but the text of the message seems to be required to reside within the Sieve script. Perhaps I'm missing something? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

[Dovecot] problem on "multiple addresses"

I have do a search on google but found nothing.. My configuration is: RH ES3 Dovecot 1.0.0.4 from atrpms (dovecot-1.0-0_4_stable20050221.el3.at) My problem is.. my mailbox has 2 internet (interface A, ip 1.2.3.4 and interface B, 9.8.7.6) and 1 intranet (interface C, 192.168.0.x) access. Default route is on interface A. pop3/imap access from connection A & C has no problem at all. But, any connection from interface B it will get a timeout error. I can sure routing is correct.. since I have virtual host on web server and running ftp server, I tested it connecting from both IP it shows no error.. Anyone can give me some hints to fix it ?? thanks in advance.

[Dovecot] dovecot's LDA agent

Hi! I am using courier IMAP with maildrop as LDA. I started reading about dovecot and i like started to feel that i can switch to it. I have couple questions mostly about dovecot's LDA. My main problem with maildrop is that i have to create manualy user directories grr. All my domains are set up as virtual with postfix. So when i add new accout thru my web panel and i have to create user dir manually. This is really annoying thing. Maildrop checks if there is user dir before delivering mail. If not it report error. I want to know if dovecot's LDA create automaticly user dirs or not. I need also filtering language in LDA and i kknow that LDA has option to use sieve scrips. Generaly i am not sure that dovecot will be a good choice to switch from courier. Could anybody help me ? -- best regards, Bartosz Giza

[Dovecot] Error in Thunderbird

[Dovecot] Shared folder subscriptions

Hello! I have this shared folder: namespace public { separator = / prefix = Public/ location = maildir:/var/mail/public } It is accessible for all users in a specific group (mode 770, umask 0007). Users in that group should always be subscribed to all subfolders, so I did not use a different CONTROL for each user. All of our IMAP users were in that group, until now. I added a new user and she should not be able to access the public folder. She is not in the right group, so everything is okay, except that her e-mail client TRIES to open Public. It is because she is also subscribed to that folder. My question is: is it possible to have different control files for different groups of users? Having a different control file for each user would not be good for me, it would cause lot trouble. Having the same control file for all users is also bad, I would get many complaints because error messages would show up. In the worst case I can write a script that automatically subscribes everybody to the correct folders, but this would be very clumsy. Any ideas? Thanks, Laszlo

[Dovecot] Actually what is the SQL DB used for?

Is a RDBMS required for Dovecot to run in small (SOHO) environments? (Does it store indexes to the mail, etc.?) Or is it strictly leveraged for larger-scale environments? I'm asking, because the INSTALL says ./configure and make is enough for most...but as my previous post requested...there isn't anywhere that lists Required Packages/Software. We need to get that out there before 1.0RC becomes 1.0! :) -AJ
