[Dovecot] Another numptie question - making maildirs for shared mailboxes.

Hi there, Sorry to have so much trouble with my Dovecot setup & to ask so many questions, but I'm having some problems with shared folders. I've read the thread at <http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2005-January/006079.html> and added the following lines to /etc/dovecot.conf: namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } namespace public { separator = / prefix = General/ location = maildir:/tmp/dovecot-test/ inbox = no hidden = no } So I create a directory /tmp/dovecot-test/ and an empty file /tmp/dovecot-test/dovecot-shared with liberal (777 & 666 respectively) permissions and then try to subscribe to the "General" folder in Outlook - I get a "failed to subscribe to the folder. The server responded `the mailbox doesn't exist: General`" error message, but cur, new & tmp are created in /tmp/dovecot-test. These subfolders are owned by the user that attempted to subscribe & have 700 permissions; chmod'ing them 777 makes no difference. Since "default_mail_env = maildir:%h/.maildir" in dovecot.conf I make a directory /tmp/dovecot-test/.maildir also containing cur, new, tmp & dovecot-shared. When I select "IMAP folders" in Outlook I am still unable to subscribe to "General" but am now able to subscribe to "General/maildir". The subscribed folder is shown in Outlook underneath the users' Inbox as a sub-folder of general, screenshot at <http://linux.stroller.uk.eu.org/DovecotSharedFolders.png> - see how I can't subscribe to "General" alone, but it is "brought in" by subscribing to "General/maildir"? If I try to copy a test message into General then, after a delay of a minute or so, I get "Can't move the items - this IMAP command could not be sent to the server before the connect was terminated"; if I try to copy the test message into General/maildir then I immediately get "Can't copy the items. The server responded: `Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information [2005-12-20 12:05:40]". I've tried tinkering with other directory structures under /tmp/dovecot-test/ with no success - can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong, please? It's quite important to me that the "General" folder is a fairly high-level one - only one additional folder icon should show up for the users' shared mail. At one point I managed to create a folder General/General, but that's undesirable - the users wouldn't understand the concept of having a folder showing in Outlook that they can't write to, or which is only used as a container for another folder. (In any case, I believe I was still unable to write to it). I was about to say, "I know I could resolve this with the use of a symlink-type shared folder, but that's undesirable because I'd have to manually add the symlink for each user that's added to the system", but writing this it occurs to me that I could resolve that by adding the symlink to the the etc/skel/. Nevertheless, I see the namespaces approach as more elegant, as it allows for different user groups having different shared folders. I'd appreciate any advice - I suspect I'm just getting the directory hierarchies wrong, or the syntax of dovecot.conf wrong AGAIN! If anyone with a working shared folders setup could provide a copy of the appropriate section of dovecot.conf & a listing of the appropriate directories then I'd be EXTREMELY grateful. Stroller.

The search order is as follows. The search stops upon the first successful lookup. (...) o The user(a)domain.tld address, without address exten- sion, is looked up next. o Finally, the recipient @domain is looked up. --- Basicaly this allows to have separate users assigned addresses like j.doe(a)example.com (first account), j.smith(a)example.com (second account) and at the same time to have a "catch all" anything(a)example.com mailbox (for the administrator e.g.). What do I need it for? To have dovecot-lda working. Why? I want Sieve :) The test data may look as follows: account #1: + mail: j.doe(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.c.doe(a)example.com account #2: + mail: j.smith(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.t.smith(a)example.com account #3 (administrator): + mail: bofh(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: @example.com (means - anything possible) The filter I used is (more or less - for both pass_filter and user_filter): (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=@%d)) Just for testing purposes I've stripped off some irrelevant data (like checking if the account is active), since that made the filter about 140 characters long ;) The trouble is when there're both a "catch all" and a true account that are linked to different accounts. As an example, if I try to send mail to "j.doe(a)example.com" I receive: dovecot: auth(default): ldap(j.doe(a)example.com): Multiple replies found for user Which is of course true, since the filter returns "account #2" and "account #3". What I'd like to get? I'd like to set the filter to: (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)) Where "%u" is expanded to "j.doe(a)example.com" during the first run Then, if dovecot can't find any user that would match this literaly it should retry the search operation, but now with "@example.com" as the "%u". I've tried to fiddle with the filter itself, but I see any reasonable way of doing it. I don't even know if it is possible at all. Could anyone give me a hint? Or maybe it's already on someone's whish list? Timo, The gdb analysis is attached. It looks like memory got seriously stomped in this core dump. There was no assert or other useful information in the syslog. I've finally managed to run Dovecot without errors in two computers with maildir and indexes stored in NFS. I added a page to wiki about this: http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS Suggestions how to keep attribute cache enabled but to allow Dovecot to specifically request not to use a cached value (when it's important) would be welcome.

[Dovecot] MAILDIR environment

from docs/mail-storages.txt: "Also as a special case, if MAILDIR environment exists, maildir storage is used with the directory specified in it." Forgive me if this seems obvious, but is this talking about setting MAILDIR as an enivornment variable? I have it set on my system in both /etc/profile and ~/.bash_profile: MAILDIR=/path/to/maildir/ export MAILDIR and have confirmed this worked by running 'echo $MAILDIR'. I've logged the user in question out and then in again, as well as restarting dovecot but it still defaults to checking ~/Maildir when the user logs in. Setting the location using default_mail_env is not an option here as I need the fallback behaviour that occurs when default_mail_env is not set. Any advice appreciated.

[Dovecot] Developing new Dspam Plugin

This email /was/ going to be a bit of a bitch about trying to get mysql compiled in to a dovecot plugin, but I got it all working before I finished the email! :-D Ok, basically what I am doing (Johannes permission) is modifying the dspam plugin, so that it instead talks to a database (MySQL in this case), and updates a table, so that you can do the actual training at a time of lower load. It /does/ require MySQL >= 5 cause I am using stored PROCEDURE's, which gives you the advantage, that you can use the same plugin, without changing anything, regardless of what your database looks like, or how you want the database to work! :-D I have successfully modified Johannes plugin to call SPAM and HAM in the database, with the signatures, and also upgraded it to work with beta9. I also made the small change of a define for the Spam folder, so that if your Spam folder is named differently, you don't have to change the code in 2-3 places as well ;-) I am yet to write any 'batch' code for processing the database tables, but that is fairly trivial, and I could even write it in php if I wanted ;-) (If you want something to do, go ahead and write me a C client to do this! Today I finally caught up with my mail. I've now read all the mails from the Dovecot list from this year and all my private mails from last few years (totaling around 500 unread mails). If you think there's still something I should have replied to, please re-send it because I've either missed it or just skipped it for some reason. (Except there are still a couple of mails from this week I've yet to reply to.) Besides reading mails I've also fixed a lot of bugs today. What's left from my original 1.0 roadmap is: - Solaris sendfile is broken? Is it? Can someone try? You can test it with maildir by setting mail_save_crlf=yes, saving a somewhat large mail and FETCHing it (and truss that it really uses sendfile) - LDA: empty mail gives an error. - quota code should probably be always doing some quota_set_critical() instead of using mail_storage_set_critical(), so that quota_last_error() would work properly - rfc2557 support for BODYSTRUCTURE, as specified by RFC3501 - keywords: add some limits to how many there can be - don't return \* in PERMANENTFLAGS when we're full - mbox: how well does dirty sync + status work? it reads the last mail every time? not very good.. - mbox: dirty state should be stored to index (with mbox_very_dirty_syncs) I think 1.0 could be released without any of those changes. But what about the connection hangs that some people have had? Do they still occur? Is it only with SSL? I guess I should look at my previous ssl-proxy rewrite, figure out what went wrong with it and try again. I'm thinking about releasing 1.0 RC1 within a few days. Would be nice if that release actually worked, so testing would be appreciated :) You can try it by getting the dovecot-latest from http://dovecot.org/nightly/ The current changes include: * PAM: If user's password is expired, give "Password expired" error message to the user. Now actually working thanks to Vaidas Pilkauskas * Relicensed dovecot-auth, lib-sql and lib-ntlm to MIT license. See COPYING file for more information. * Abuse prevention: When creating a mailbox, limit the number of hierarchies (up to 20) and the length of the mailbox name within a hierarchy (up to 200 characters). * mbox: If saved mail doesn't end with LF, add it ourself so that the mails always have one empty line before the next From-line. + Added --with-statedir configure option which defaults to $localstatedir/lib/dovecot. ssl-parameters.dat is permanently stored in that directory and is copied to login_dirs from there. + IMAP: Support SASL-IR extension (SASL initial response) + Support initial SASL response with LOGIN mechanism. [Dovecot] no protocols inhibits dovecot --exec-mail

Hi, Running the current debian unstable version (1.0.beta2) dovecot tells me: $ /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail imap Error: No protocols given in configuration file Could this be changed? I don't need dovecot listening on any ports but would still like to allow this usage... Or should I configure protocols but no listen addresses instead? [if so the debian package needs an update because it filters out the case of no protocols and doesn't start dovecot in that case] johannes
