[Dovecot] Another numptie question - making maildirs for shared mailboxes.

Hi there, Sorry to have so much trouble with my Dovecot setup & to ask so many questions, but I'm having some problems with shared folders. I've read the thread at <http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2005-January/006079.html> and added the following lines to /etc/dovecot.conf: namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } namespace public { separator = / prefix = General/ location = maildir:/tmp/dovecot-test/ inbox = no hidden = no } So I create a directory /tmp/dovecot-test/ and an empty file /tmp/dovecot-test/dovecot-shared with liberal (777 & 666 respectively) permissions and then try to subscribe to the "General" folder in Outlook - I get a "failed to subscribe to the folder. The server responded `the mailbox doesn't exist: General`" error message, but cur, new & tmp are created in /tmp/dovecot-test. These subfolders are owned by the user that attempted to subscribe & have 700 permissions; chmod'ing them 777 makes no difference. Since "default_mail_env = maildir:%h/.maildir" in dovecot.conf I make a directory /tmp/dovecot-test/.maildir also containing cur, new, tmp & dovecot-shared. When I select "IMAP folders" in Outlook I am still unable to subscribe to "General" but am now able to subscribe to "General/maildir". The subscribed folder is shown in Outlook underneath the users' Inbox as a sub-folder of general, screenshot at <http://linux.stroller.uk.eu.org/DovecotSharedFolders.png> - see how I can't subscribe to "General" alone, but it is "brought in" by subscribing to "General/maildir"? If I try to copy a test message into General then, after a delay of a minute or so, I get "Can't move the items - this IMAP command could not be sent to the server before the connect was terminated"; if I try to copy the test message into General/maildir then I immediately get "Can't copy the items. The server responded: `Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information [2005-12-20 12:05:40]". I've tried tinkering with other directory structures under /tmp/dovecot-test/ with no success - can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong, please? It's quite important to me that the "General" folder is a fairly high-level one - only one additional folder icon should show up for the users' shared mail. At one point I managed to create a folder General/General, but that's undesirable - the users wouldn't understand the concept of having a folder showing in Outlook that they can't write to, or which is only used as a container for another folder. (In any case, I believe I was still unable to write to it). I was about to say, "I know I could resolve this with the use of a symlink-type shared folder, but that's undesirable because I'd have to manually add the symlink for each user that's added to the system", but writing this it occurs to me that I could resolve that by adding the symlink to the the etc/skel/. Nevertheless, I see the namespaces approach as more elegant, as it allows for different user groups having different shared folders. I'd appreciate any advice - I suspect I'm just getting the directory hierarchies wrong, or the syntax of dovecot.conf wrong AGAIN! If anyone with a working shared folders setup could provide a copy of the appropriate section of dovecot.conf & a listing of the appropriate directories then I'd be EXTREMELY grateful. Stroller.

The search order is as follows. The search stops upon the first successful lookup. (...) o The user(a)domain.tld address, without address exten- sion, is looked up next. o Finally, the recipient @domain is looked up. --- Basicaly this allows to have separate users assigned addresses like j.doe(a)example.com (first account), j.smith(a)example.com (second account) and at the same time to have a "catch all" anything(a)example.com mailbox (for the administrator e.g.). What do I need it for? To have dovecot-lda working. Why? I want Sieve :) The test data may look as follows: account #1: + mail: j.doe(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.c.doe(a)example.com account #2: + mail: j.smith(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.t.smith(a)example.com account #3 (administrator): + mail: bofh(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: @example.com (means - anything possible) The filter I used is (more or less - for both pass_filter and user_filter): (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=@%d)) Just for testing purposes I've stripped off some irrelevant data (like checking if the account is active), since that made the filter about 140 characters long ;) The trouble is when there're both a "catch all" and a true account that are linked to different accounts. As an example, if I try to send mail to "j.doe(a)example.com" I receive: dovecot: auth(default): ldap(j.doe(a)example.com): Multiple replies found for user Which is of course true, since the filter returns "account #2" and "account #3". What I'd like to get? I'd like to set the filter to: (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)) Where "%u" is expanded to "j.doe(a)example.com" during the first run Then, if dovecot can't find any user that would match this literaly it should retry the search operation, but now with "@example.com" as the "%u". I've tried to fiddle with the filter itself, but I see any reasonable way of doing it. I don't even know if it is possible at all. Could anyone give me a hint? Or maybe it's already on someone's whish list? Timo, The gdb analysis is attached. It looks like memory got seriously stomped in this core dump. There was no assert or other useful information in the syslog. I've finally managed to run Dovecot without errors in two computers with maildir and indexes stored in NFS. I added a page to wiki about this: http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS Suggestions how to keep attribute cache enabled but to allow Dovecot to specifically request not to use a cached value (when it's important) would be welcome.

[Dovecot] MAILDIR environment

from docs/mail-storages.txt: "Also as a special case, if MAILDIR environment exists, maildir storage is used with the directory specified in it." Forgive me if this seems obvious, but is this talking about setting MAILDIR as an enivornment variable? I have it set on my system in both /etc/profile and ~/.bash_profile: MAILDIR=/path/to/maildir/ export MAILDIR and have confirmed this worked by running 'echo $MAILDIR'. I've logged the user in question out and then in again, as well as restarting dovecot but it still defaults to checking ~/Maildir when the user logs in. Setting the location using default_mail_env is not an option here as I need the fallback behaviour that occurs when default_mail_env is not set. Any advice appreciated.

[Dovecot] moving public folders to private Trash

Using Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 against dovecot beta9: If a user has Thunderbird configured to move deleted messages into a Trash folder, then the user cannot delete folders in a public namespace. There is no problem deleting messages. Thunderbird says: "The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Can't rename mailbox to another storage type." All mailboxes (public and private) are maildir format. Users can successfully delete folders from their own private areas, and the folders then appear as subfolders of the Trash folder. Also, users can reconfigure Thunderbird to delete messages immediately instead of moving them to trash and then successfully remove public folders. Also, users can move public folders within the public namespace. So I think the problem boils down to the inability to move a folder from a public namespace to a private one, which is what happens when Thunderbird is configured to move deleted messages to a Trash folder. Hello Timo, Dispite the heat out here, I managed to come up with a new version of the managesieve patch for dovecot-1.0rc2: - Fixed the bug (missing CRLF) in the authenticate command - Modified the sieve storage library making the interface much less crude. - The scripts put on the server using the putscript command are now checked before they are accepted. - The reported SIEVE capability is now directly read from the sieve implementation (in this case cmu), listing much more than "FILEINTO VACATION". - Fixed some minor bugs in the putscript command Considering the dovecot-sieve plugin, I noticed that you obviously do not want to include the cmu sieve code in the main dovecot source tree. Unfortunately I did not see any other way but to include this library in my patch to make it support checking the uploaded scripts (for now). There are a few alternatives to solve this issue. We could combine de dovecot-sieve plugin with the managesieve patch yielding a single large sieve plugin. However, this would require some means to let the master know about the new managesieve process type. This could be achieved with some more plugin magic. Another way to solve this problem is by truly only excluding the cmu source from the main dovecot tree. If the interface of the sieve implementation is abstracted somehow, one could build a plugin interface for sieve implementations. This sieve interface would be common to dovecot-deliver and the managesieve daemon. This way, it does not matter how the sieve language is implemented (dovecot could even implement its own and still support cmu and others). I saw a hint to this solution in your original dovecot-lda plugin (i.e. sieve-mailutils.c etc), so you must have been playing with this idea as well. I took the liberty to define an example interface for the sieve implementations in the src/lib-sieve directory. It was concieved very quickly and it is far from complete, but it should support the current features of the delivery process. It is only tested for the managesieve putscript verification (no script was ever run though this interface). I am also not quite happy with the error reporting scheme of this interface. This needs more work and if you don't like it you can of course discard it entirely and define your own. Currently, I am also testing other sieve implementations. I am experimenting with libsieve2 (libsieve.sourceforge.net) and with building a wrapper around 'exim -bf'. This last solution is of course not useful for dovecot-lda, but I think the managesieve daemon is not only useful for dovecot itself. Support for these implementations is not yet included in this patch. The patch can be downloaded at: http://sinas.rename-it.nl/~sirius/dovecot-1.0.rc2-MANAGESIEVE-v2.diff.gz (Simply apply it (-p0) to a clean 1.0rc2 source tree and run autogen.sh etc.) For testing, I have tried other client implementations than horde-ingo, but somehow everyone is very focused on the timsieve daemon and they tend to require its protocol specifics. The only other implementation I got working is smartsieve. The others either crashed or produced protocol errors (i.e. sieveshell). I hope I can get more client implementations to work to ensure the incompatibilies are not my fault.
