[Dovecot] 1.0.5: many pop3-login processes?

Hello, We are running dovecot 1.0.5 on a test server, with FreeBSD 6.2 (though I have noticed the same problem since dovecot versions in the 0.99 range). We don't have very many simultaneous pop/imap users, but we have a proliferation of pop3-login processes. Currently we have 128 such processes. We have 11 imap-login processes, but only a few actual imap processes running. Is this normal? Can we stop it? Is anyone else successfully running dovecot on FreeBSD 6.2? Thanks for your help. [Dovecot] Authentication: Dovecot -> Vpopmail - > MySQL with one table per domain

Hi All, I am using Dovecot 1.0.13 with Vpopmail (Qmail Toaster current) backed by MySQL with one table per domain (--disable-many-domains) . What I cannot figure out is how to have Dovecot authenticate to Vpopmail when Vpopmail uses one table per domain. Basically I need dynamic SQL in the Dovecot-sql.conf file. Currently I have: password_query = select pw_clear_passwd as password from domainname_com where pw_name = '%n' I need something like password_query = select pw_clear_passwd as password from %d where pw_name = '%n' Where %d is the name of the table. I can't use the exact domain name at it will not match the vpopmail format domainname_com. I would be happy to use some sort of sting builder but and not sure what my options are in the .conf file. RFC3028 say: Folding of long header lines (as described in [IMAIL] 3.4.8) is removed prior to interpretation of the data. The folding syntax (the CRLF that ends a line plus any leading whitespace at the beginning of the next line that indicates folding) are interpreted as if they were a single space. But it seems to be not true for dovecot-sieve-1.0.2 for header Received: from example.ru (example.ru [192.168.105.14]) by myserver (Postfix) with ESMTP id D4DA5D85927 This sieve test work: header :matches "Received" "from *by myserver (Postfix) with ESMTP id *" But this test not work, while should also work according to RFC: header :matches "Received" "from * by myserver (Postfix) with ESMTP id *" -- WBR, Anton Yuzhaninov

I guess the alert function is not part of the spec, because it appears to be unimplemented in Dovecot, even though most clients implement it. Timo, I would hope this would be easy to implement, and it's functionality that will be valuable to every installation. Here's why. America recently had the tragedy of a shooting rampage on a large university campus (yes, America should do something about the violence and free access to guns in our culture/society). What was worse was that, due to the lack of an emergency notification process, some 20+ people died needlessly. Now all college and university administration are scrambling to set up emergency notification processes. Our first take on this is a massive all-hands mailing list, but a) best case, it would take 15 minutes (and as much as an hour) to get to everybody's mailbox. b) users would have to read through their mail and stumble on the message What's needed is an "in-your-face" unavoidable alert, and the UWIMAP alert functionality provides this. As I recall, you touch just about anything in your IMAP client and there's a popup message in the middle of the client IMAP window...and it happens repeatedly. We tried it back 3-4 years ago and found it too annoying to use. For this purpose, it's perfect. The wy UWIMAP did it, the presence of the file /etc/imapd.alert triggers it, and the text in that file is transmitted to the client. The message has to be short, a one-liner for a small popup window, but this could be a pointer to a shared system message folder. Of course, DC could sense the activation of the alert in some other fashion that the presence of a file. Ideally, whatever activates the alert function should be able to be turned on remotely; I had in mind to do it using a mail aliases that is a pipe to a executable... [Dovecot] authentication troubles

Hi! I hope I'm using the right mailing for a feature request. I'm using dovecot on my server for a year now and I'm very happy with it. Its extremely stable and fast. Ok what is my situation why I'm asking a feature.. Users are retrieving mail using pop3 over the external ip address. When the user connects to there webmail. The webmail client (Squirrelmail) is using imap on the localhost. I would like to give some users the option to use imap over the external ip, I want to set option in my MySql backend configuration. As far as I know there isn't a possible solution on dovecot right now that's why I hope you can build a extra config parameter that gives me the possibility to allow users to retrieve email by imap by ip. So all users can do an imap request on localhost (for webmail) and some user are allowed to do an imap request over the external ip. I hope that my request is clear and I'm posting in the right group. With regards, Ruud Boon

This is my approach, stored in /etc/cron.hourly. It's very new, so I'm still testing it. The goal is to learn HAM massages only if they are a day old, so that I can manually remove SPAM that slipped through. Mails tagged from Spamassassin are sorted automatically into the "Junk.Spam" mailbox and learned after 12 hours. [Dovecot] outlook2007 shows frequent imap disconnect no matter what outlook-idle setting in dovecot.conf

Hello, I saw the problem quite often in various posts but could not find a real solution . Problem is that I frequently get annoying popups from outlook 2007 about imap idle timeouts which block working with outlook until the popup is acknowledged. The popup says: Your IMAP server closed the connection. This can occur if you leave the connection idle for too long. Protocol: IMAP Server: testhost Port: 143 Error Code: 0x800CCCDD I tried to run dovecot with or without "imap_client_workarounds = outlook-idle" but do not see any difference. I am running dovecot on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.1 (Tikanga). Below is the output of some commands to get a clue about my config. Background info: Our primary mailboxes are on exchange servers. As there is a size limit on the server mailboxes I am evaluating a local storage solution for our users. Thus I set up an additional mailbox in outlook using IMAP. Local .pst files can not be backuped easily (especially when outlook is running) and I am investigating a local IMAP server where users can move their mails to. This server can easily be backuped (even incrementally when using Maildir) and users do always have access to their mails. The drawbacks are that users must have an extra login to the imap server because I have no ldap access to the company AD server from our local site domain. The solution will not be accepted though if I can not prevent the frequent disconnect popups.
