Hi Javier, thanks for your reply. I already checked SIS and, while interesting, is not what I want, because: 1) it can be difficult to restore a single message/attachment from a backup 2) only the attachments, and not the entire messages, are deduped. Message-based hardlinks really exists for a reason. The good news is that I found _why_ they are not working: it depends from how dovecot and its sieve plugin (pigenhole) interact. Basically, if I define anything for the before_sieve and after_sieve variables, dovecot stops creating hardlinks for multiple copies of the same message. On the other hand, private (per-user) sieve file works without interfering with hardlinks. In a similar manner, disabling sieve also permits dovecot to create multiple hardlinks for a single message. Shortcomings of Maildir++ layout

Hi, I am trying to deal with the problem, that under regular mbox format a path can lead to either a file or a directory, but not both, while under IMAP, a path is usually both, a message folder containing subfolders. I found dovecot's approach to this problem, the Maildir++ layout described under http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MboxChildFolders , and was astonished to see, what problems come with Maildir++ and how complicated dovecot tries to deal with them. I wonder why dovecot is not using a much easier approach and just uses a configurable prefix and/or suffix like .dir or ____ for directory names, e.g. INBOX -> ~/mail/inbox abc -> ~/mail/abc abc/def -> ~/mail/abc.dir/def or ~/mail/___abc___/def which would make all that trouble with .subscriptions and .index much more easier. In my eyes the Maildir++ layout is overcomplicated because of the heap of workarounds to the self-created problems. regards Hadmut

Maildir: ACLs/Unix perms and unable to see content of specific mailbox

Dear Dovecot users, hello. I will merge two issues I have into a single email because they may be related. I used dovecot on a OmniOS server since 2014 (currently OmniOS r151014) with the following configuration (it shows 2.2.18 because I recently updated dovecot, skipping only the PostgreSQL plugin): # 2.2.18: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: SunOS 5.11 i86pc zfs mail_location = maildir:/tank/home/%u/Maildir mail_privileged_group = mail namespace inbox { inbox = yes location = mailbox Drafts { special_use = \Drafts } mailbox Junk { special_use = \Junk } mailbox Sent { special_use = \Sent } mailbox "Sent Messages" { special_use = \Sent } mailbox Trash { special_use = \Trash } prefix = } passdb { driver = pam } protocols = imap ssl = required ssl_cert = </etc/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key = </etc/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem userdb { driver = passwd } You can see that I set the Maildir folder inside the shared home folders of my server (it is only one user, anyway). It always worked perfectly, but one-two months ago I changed the permissions of my whole home folder, recursively, to add proper ACLs. I needed them because the clients started using illumos kernel SMB (relying on ACLs) instead of Netatalk/AFP (relying on Unix perms only). I didn't realise I applied the ACLs also to the Maildir folder. Dovecot worked for several weeks fine, I noticed the issue only yesterday when a mailbox (see below) appeared in Thunderbird completely empty even if the "cur" subfolder on the server still contains all the mails. Double Dots

I've noticed lately that Dovecot seems to be inserting an extra dot in some url's contained in html email. The most consistent example I see is in the newsletters from the Washington Post. For example, if I look at the raw email on the mail server I see text that starts <http://link.washingtonpost.com/click But if I look at what Thunderbird shows it starts http://link..washingtonpost.com/click/ I don't think its Thunderbird adding the dot, since K9 mail on my Android phone shows the same issue. It's only after the IMAP delivery that the extra dot appears. We are running dovecot 2.0.12 Incidentally, the newsletter is full of these link.washington post url's. For each article it appears 3 times, once on title, once on a "read full article" link, and one on a picture. Its only the one on title, that gets the extra dot after its been through dovecot. Furthermore, it only happens from the second article on. Any ideas?

Any thoughts on what else would be useful? I was also thinking about separating (deletes and) expunges from Trash vs non-Trash, but I'm not sure how useful that would be (and what would it be called?) It's also a bit annoying that a copy+expunge to a Trash will return expunged=1 trashed=1, but a move to Trash (via IMAP MOVE) will return expunged=0 trashed=1. But trying to fix that would be too much trouble.

userdb prefetch doesn't work with imapc (2.2.18)

Hi, I have the following config in dovecot 2.2.18: # doveconf -n userdb passdb userdb { driver = prefetch } passdb { args = host=127.0.0.1 port=1430 default_fields = userdb_imapc_user=%u userdb_imapc_password=%w driver = imap } I guess it should cause a single login to the backend IMAP server when issuing a LOGIN to dovecot. Yet, dovecot opens two TCP sessions. In the first, it issues a LOGIN and in the second it logs in again (LOGIN) and issues LIST "" "". At the end (after LOGIN succeeds to dovecot), only one of the two connections remain open to the backend server. Any ideas about this? Thanks,
