[Dovecot] dovecot-acl-list not honouring owner / permissions that are set on dovecot-shared

Hi, I've just upgraded our dovecot installation from 1.0.15 to 1.1.13. This went smoothly and just worked -- thank you very much for writing such a high performance and robust piece of software. However, we have a shared mailbox that people can subscribe to. After upgrading to 1.1.13 ... dovecot tries to create a dovecot-acl-list file in the top level of this ... but it creates it chown'd to the first logged in user with a umask of -rw- --- --- A. -rw------- 1 userA shared 17179 2009-06-25 11:10 /home/imapshared/SharedMaildir/dovecot-acl-list Everyone else who tried to access the shared folder (and hence dovecot tried to read / update the dovecot-acl-list file) caused an error to be logged to the error.log I changed the permissions (once I realised what had gone wrong) to match those on the dovecot-shared file and all was well as everyone can now read/update it. B. -rw-rw---- 1 imapshared shared 17179 2009-06-25 11:19 /home/imapshared/SharedMaildir/dovecot-acl-list -rw-rw---- 1 imapshared shared 0 2008-04-25 13:20 /home/imapshared/SharedMaildir/dovecot-shared Also from time to time the permissions seem to get changed back on dovecot-acl-list inexplicably to those in situation A -- usually following a restart of dovecot but I haven't been able to reproduce this reliably. This seems like a bug to me ... do you agree / is there a sensible work-around? The declaration in dovecot.conf for the shared namespace sets user specific CONTROL and INDEX locations so that users can independently subscribe to folders and mark messages as read on an individual basis. That is not right, no matter what. There is definitely some issue. Once the load increases the system will start timing out on POP3 connections or other network connections, such as IMAP, SSH etc. Better check out the system logs, utilization etc. for any abnormal values. Hello, Doing a "ps aux" on my Slackware box, I have approx 100 PID's of "pop3-login's going on. This is a production mail server, but it is getting VERY low traffic. In fact, only 3 people can "pop3" into it. I've check their e-mail clients, and they are not checking mail any more often than every 5 minutes. This is a new installation and I've had the server up and running since Sunday. If it matters, I'm using Postfix for the MTA and using the Dovecot SASL library to AUTH SMTP. Is this a cause for concern? Why does Dovecot need this many processes? Thanks! Rodman

[Dovecot] Quota_rules ignored

Today I upgraded to version 1.1.16 of Dovecot (and Sieve), because I wanted to use mailbox quotas. I tried using the instructions on http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/1.1 and simular websites for 4 hours now, but it seems that all quota_rules are ignored. Also, whenever I use a '*' in my MySQL query I get the error: 'unknown quota backend'. Hello, I have installed postfix 2.5.1 + dovecot 1.0.13 + MySQL and it all works perfectly. I use deliver as the local delivery agent and use IMAP only with maildir mailboxes. I am using virtual mailboxes. Now I wanted to introduce quotas, but I can't manage to make them work. Quota information is retreived from MySQL in userdb requests. I have noticed that the maildirsize file is not updated by deliver when a new mail comes in. I don't know if this is correct or not... It is updated though when I log in. But even then mails are still received without any kind of problem while the mailbox is well over the quota. I tried to add a "-v" option to deliver in postfix's master.cf to debug deliver, but it apparently does not like this option. Please find below my postfix and dovecot's configurations. [Dovecot] Dovecot Problem

Every 2 or 3 days dovecot will not allow me to log into my IMAP server. It keeps requesting my username and password. If I do a /etc/init.d/dovecot restart it will start working again for a few days. I have dovecot set up to use Maildir. Hello, Some users subscribe to several mailing lists which causes them to have the same message several times what they do not want . [Dovecot] dovecot-antispam problem with sa-learn

Hi all, I just set up a dovecot+postfix+roundcubemail+spamassassin system with virtual users. These applications work fine, I have a problem with the dovecot-antispam plugin. Dovecot is compiled from tarball, version 1.1.16, the plugin is version 1.2. The problem is that when I move messages from or to "Posta indesiderata", which is in antispam_spam list, nothing happens. I have no logs about sa-learn activity in /var/log/maillog, nor in /var/log messages, no matter if I set DEBUG=syslog or DEBUG=stderr. There is apparently still one rare crashing bug in virtual plugin, but unless someone can reproduce the bug I'm not going to delay v1.2.0 because of it. So July 1st is the absolute final deadline for v1.2.0. :) Changes since rc5: * imap proxy: Pass through to client unexpected untagged replies from remote server (e.g. alerts). * Solr: Don't use "any" copyfield, it doubles the index size. * mail_location: Allow using ":" characters in dir names by escaping it as "::". - mbox: Don't crash with invalid From_-lines. - IMAP: Don't crash if IDLE command is pipelined after a long-running UID FETCH or UID SEARCH. - ACL / shared mailbox fixes - Some metadata files were incorrectly getting 0666 permissions.

I have a question about migration from courier-imap. I have a server running courier-imap which I'd like to change to dovecot. The problem at hand is that there are POP3 users as well as IMAP4 users.Some of the POP3 users have the option to "leave a copy of the message on the server" set in their MuAs. Hi, I've just started using Dovecot (v1.1.14), and I'm noticing a lot of dictionary attacks. I searched through the documentation and the mailing list archives hoping to find support for tcp_wrappers (hosts.deny) support. I did find some suggested patches in the list from last year, but as far as I can tell, there is no support in the released versions. Is this implemented and undocumented, or just unimplemented? I would be surprised to find it unimplemented in such an otherwise sophisticated project. Thanks in advance, --Bill

[Dovecot] A X-Mailbox header?

Hi all, I'm waiting for the virtual mailbox feature in order to make a single POP3 access to retrieve messages contained in all my mailbox folders. This is because I use webmail and other IMAP clients but my main workstation uses a POP3-only client. I was wondering if there's a way to keep the name of the folder containing each message while retrieving via POP3. I guess this could be done by dynamically adding a header to messages at retrieval time. Is there a feature for this or a plugin API? Otherwise I was thinking about modifying the messages themselves on the server using a script. However, such a script would need to be run when a IMAP user moves a message to a folder and I believe Dovecot doesn't provide a trigger/hook mechanism. I also don't know if modifying stored messages is allowed since it could break some caching/hashing mechanism. Do you have any idea for this? Hi all, Got a question on configuring dovecot, I'm still new at this so I might be doing this all wrong. I want dovecot to authenticate the mail client using CRAM-MD5 so I've setup the config in dovecot.conf: auth default { mechanisms = cram-md5 passdb sql { # Path for SQL configuration file, see doc/dovecot-sql-example.conf args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf } <snipped> } In my dovecot-sql.conf I've setup the password scheme to be: default_pass_scheme = MD5 Somehow this does not work, the error I see in the logfile is: auth-worker(default): password(info(a)richard5.tld,127.0.0.1): Requested CRAM-MD5 scheme, but we have only MD5 Is there a way to get this working or does this feature only works with passwords stored in plain text ? Hi all Deduplicating data is not really a new thing, but quite efficient in mail systems where an email with an nMB attachment may be sent to multiple recipients. This might call for deduplicating data. Is there a way to do this, or is it far off? If I understand the system correctly, usually an MTA is calling dovecot on every single message, meaning the message itself won't necessarily be a duplicate in terms of headers (BCCs and so on). Would it be possible to dedup the content in terms of using separate files for the header and content and then deduping this with hard or symbolic links? However the %%h gives me head aches, well, the location in general: I've copied the default mail_location and changed its CONTROL and INDEX settings: namespace shared { ... location = maildir:%%h/Maildir:CONTROL=/var/cache/dovecot/%i/control/shared/%%u:INDEX=/var/cache/dovecot/%i/index/shared/%%u } Now the first wows are that: a) IMAP insists to connect to $install_prefix/var/run/dovecot/auth-master instead of /var/run/dovecot/auth-master used by deliver. So instead of "1" the value is the base of the shared location, e.g. maildir:/local/testuser or maildir:/home/user/Maildir..., and some %%? token takes the string from there. Hi, First, thanks Timo and Stefan for this great IMAP/Sieve implementation... We are using 1.1.16+cmu_sieve/managesieve additions for now (following releases since ~ 1.0.1). We have a specific problem here with auth-cache: We use direct imap/sieve connection from different clients, using LDAP password: everything is fine. The problem appears with our webmail access using a web-SSO system (jasig's CAS), using one-time-tickets as password for imap connections (checked by pam_cas module for now). For a single webmail connection par login, it work, thanks to cache_key using client's IP. But for multiple use of the same login in the webmail, there are more than one 'password' valid at a time… What may be the 'correct' solution: - patching auth-cache.c (auth_cache_lookup function ?) - writing a different login backend ? - ??? But why? Shouldn't they belong to the CONTROL= directories? So it is more compatible with filesystem quota. + They have 0666 permissions, but all other files (e.g. when I create a new mailbox) have 0660 permissions. Are the permissions selected explicitly to allow "a"-right for other (system) users? + When one removes all rights, the size of the file drops to zero. The wasted space is no great deal; but how much processing is wasted if such file is present? I mean, the log says that the files are opened very regularily. Would it help to remove zero-size files?
