Hi. Earlier today I was hit with 612 login attempts in 7 minutes. They ramped up slowly, too. :-) They quickly hit the file descriptor limit. And then a login server spawned and died so quickly that dovecot just died. My question is, is there a way to throttle the number of login connections? I'm doing it in my firewall now, but it would be nice to be able to say something like "max-login-attempts: X" before we blacklist the IP (for some configurable time). yeah, I know V4.2 :-) By the way, I *really* appreciate all the effort that's gone into Dovecot. We are running Postfix 2.3.3 and Dovecot 1.0-RC27 on a Solaris 10 server. We use the Dovecot LDA for local delivery. Problems arise with looping mail whenever a user's .forward contains a reference to themselves. This most frequently occurs when a user sets up a vacation since it then puts this in their .forward file: \username, "|/usr/bin/vacation username" The vacation program runs fine, and sends a notice back to the message originator, but when an attempt is made to deliver the message locally, it fails with: Mar 21 13:02:16 myhost.mydomain postfix/local[13373]: 3DF5A2C63: to=<systest(a)myhost.mydomain>, relay=local, delay=0.15, delays=0.12/0/0/0.03, dsn=5.4.6, status=bounced (mail forwarding loop for systest(a)myhost.mydomain) Any ideas? [Dovecot] Timeouts connecting via POP3

I'm experiencing timeouts from time to time from both Mac Mail and Outlook when connecting to my server. I originally suspected that it might be process # related, so I increased the auth & login process counts but that hasn't seemed to make a difference. I'm running 1.0rc10 which came with my DirectAdmin control panel. I'm wondering if this problem is known and was fixed in a later release? I'm waiting for instructions from the DirectAdmin folks on building a new version in case they do something special. Any ideas? Thanks!

To all, I am using Dovecot on solaris 10. Home directories are mounted using NFS. However, they are not readable by root. I compiled Dovecot from the source. I set the following environment variables: export LDFLAGS='-L/local/software/openssl/lib -R/local/software/openssl/lib' export CPPFLAGS=-I/local/software/openssl/include Then I ran gmake and the gmake install. I've just tried out Dovecot LDA. The reason I didn't want to use it before was that I found it unnecessary together with Exim, plus I wanted to use Exim's filtering. But now I wanted to see if can notice any improvement when the indexes are updated on delivery, and I saw that it's possible to use Exim filters and pass the resulting folder with -m. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but IIUC some corrections, improvements, and comments could be made on http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA. In the "Site-wide setup" section (and in dovecot.conf) it's suggested that access be restricted to the master socket somehow. The first Exim example ("System-users"), however, requires a world-writable socket. Uncomment "group = mail" and deliver will complain that setgid() fails. In this situation, the "-d $local_part@$domain" is unnecessary because then deliver will use the name of the user it's running as (it should probably have been just "-d $local_part" anyway). However, if deliver is run by root (which is by default impossible under Exim) or setuid root, then a destination user is mandatory. Oh wait, without -d the auth socket isn't used at all, only the HOME environment variable and default_mail_env are. Well, it shouldn't matter much if you're running a standard pam/passwd setup, but with a more complicated non-virtual setup I see only four solutions: Make deliver setuid root, remove root from the compiled-in FIXED_NEVER_USERS list, run deliver as a user/group that has write access to all mailboxes, or make the master socket world-writable. -- Magnus Holmgren holmgren(a)lysator.liu.se (No Cc of list mail needed, thanks)

Hi, I'm still trying to migrate a running qmail + vpopmail to sendmail + dovecot. I need the milter stuff from sendmail. I got sendmail + dovecot running using the migrated tables from the vpopmail DB, but I'm facing the UID problem in pop3. So, now I'm following the vpopmail authdb path. My questions are: - what do I need, a running vpopmail server (lib + binary, etc)? - or only the DB? So as to make sure that Dovecot Sieve's vacation system works Exim has to be forced to generate a "Reply-To:" header in the message (which it doesn't do by default). The current example for using the Dovecot LDA with Exim doesn't do this. Here is a replacement example for the local_delivery transport:- local_delivery: driver = pipe command = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d $local_part message_prefix = message_suffix = log_output delivery_date_add envelope_to_add return_path_add headers_add = Reply-To: ${if def:header_reply-to:{$h_reply-to:}{$h_from:}} #group = mail #mode = 0660 Basically, if the Reply-To: header exists than it merely gets overwritten with itself. If it doesn't then the header is created and the contents of the From header is put into it. If this is not done then the libsieve over restrictive rules (requiring a "Reply-To:" header even though the RFC doesn't require it) will not allow the vacation system to work. Hi, I'm still seeing mails being downloaded twice via POP3 in my setup, running rc27. [Dovecot] Double homedirs and tilde problems in case of chroot in passwd-file / static dbs.

Recently I've made the post about "double homedir" problem, but I couldn't recreate it later. Here're the exact steps to make it happen (configuration is at the bottom): 1) set configuration as below with passwd-files 2) clean testms dir (not necessary though) 3) reload dovecot (HUP is enough) 4) access the server with any client using testms user (make sure no other user accesses server before you) - on the first access, dovecot will create /home/vmail/ppgk.com.pl/testms/Maildir under /home/vmail/ppgk.com.pl/testms/ - on every next access, dovecot will access (and create if it doesn't exist) proper Maildir under "single" home path Situation will repeat itself, if dovecot is reloaded (or killed and restarted). It happens to both imap and pop3. Note, that the a single access seems to be enough to "fix" the problem to all the other users in passwd-file, should there be any. The problem seems to be created by chroot specification in passwd-file & static (and possibly when other dbs are used). On the first access, dovecot attempts to recreate whole /home/vmail.... directory structure *after* chrooting to the homedir (or without taking earlier chroot into account), at least that's how it looks from ktrace. If I moved /./ to the left by one subdir, dovecot would attempt to do it under root owned /home/vmail/ppgk.com.pl/ and fail in the process. And so on. Tilde is another problem - if in dovecot.userdb I change - maildir:~/Maildir: to mbox:~/Mail:INBOX=~/inbox: - then single '~' directory will be created under /home/vmail/ppgk.com.pl/testms/, along the inbox file and Mail dir. If INBOX, CONTROL and/or INDEX is specified explicitely in maildir case, '~' won't be created. That leads to the questiom - is tilde allowed in INBOX under mbox storage at all ? I can't check '~' in INBOX/mbox case for system accounts atm though. If you need any more info (like ktrace), let me know. [Dovecot] Index files in .imap directory

A few RC releases ago we had a problem where a user's restored home directory contained a .imap folder either from a previous RC release or perhaps it was a different server. In any event, restoration of the user caused problems since Dovecot choked on the restored .imap index files. Removing those index files cleared the problem. I'm wondering if this is still an issue, and therefore whether we need to find and remove all .imap folders prior to archiving users, so that they are not restored with potentially old/bad index files. I would like to NOT have to worry about them, but rather have Dovecot be smart about when to simply re-create them if it detects something it does not like about them. -- Steven F. Hi Timo, What I did actually was change option (D) to the following below, or do I have to remove this one altogether? plugin { quota = maildir } Then added the attribute mailquota=10240 as I had defined in my dovecot schema And when I did a tried to run getquota "" or getquotaroot inbox (via telnet localhost 143), it would return me a "no quota" message. What I am able deduce is that the mailquota attribute did not take effect at all. Do you think I may have missed something out. And thanks for your prompt reply, really appreciate it. [Dovecot] invalid mbox

dovecot-1.0-1.1.rc15.fc6 When I attempt to drag spam from one IMAP box to another it tells me that I have an invalid mbox format for some emails. Occasionally too when I click on that email box it gives me the same error. uw-imapd never gave me those problems. I use Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 and have the same problem on Windoze XP and MacOSX. Can I and how do I solve this problem? Marc

Hi. That's my first post. it's driving me crazy. I'm trying to get dovecot working with vpopmail on Openwrt, an embedded linux-like OS for some routers . So actually my aim looks like get dovecot working with little hardware resources (32 MB of Ram, 8 MB of disk mem.) I've cross compiled it well(it looks like). the login against vpopmail works. using mmap it cannot even select the inbox, the log says: Error: IMAP(test(a)fabri-fibra.org): file_dotlock_create() failed with file /home/vpopmail/domains/mydomain.org/test/Maildir/dovecot.index.log: No such file or directory And an impressive Kernel page fault: Mar 21 17:38:48 (none) kern.alert kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 00000008, epc == 8004cce8, ra == 8004cc34 Mar 21 17:38:48 (none) kern.warn kernel: Oops in fault.c::do_page_fault, line 206: etc etc... even this error: Mar 21 17:38:48 (none) kern.crit kernel: ASSERTION FAILED: file->f_dentry != NULL at aux.c:120 (check_mini_fo_file) With mmap disabled i can select the inbox and read/write just the first time since any new attempt get stucked because the file dovecot-uidlist.lock was not removed. more details: dovecot: Mar 21 17:13:34 Warning: IMAP(test(a)fabri-fibra.org): Our dotlock file /home/vpopmail/domains/mydomain.org/test/Maildir/dovecot-uidlist.lock was overridden (kept it 0 secs) By the way my file system is a jffs, and my disk has 500K left. [Dovecot] Adding ", S=size" to new message files when using "dirsize"

When APPENDing new message files to an IMAP Maildir, Dovecot 1.0 rc27 can be configured to add ",S=size" to the filename. That allows it to be calculated with the "dirsize" quota plugin (and MTA's such as Exim). However, Dovecot only seems to do that when the "maildir" quota plugin is specified (from "quota-maildir.c"): /* For newly generated filenames add ,S=size. */ storage->save_size_in_filename = TRUE; Shouldn't "save_size_in_filename" be included in "quota-dirsize.c", since "dirsize" is the one that actually needs "S="? Maybe I'm missing something? Hello, I just recently switched my system from a BincIMAP/vpopmail to a Dovecot/vpopmail system, and I have to say: thanks! There were really only two things I had to patch Dovecot to do: first, provide statistics on network usage, and second, to allow folders to be LIST'd/SELECT'd/etc. with a trailing separator (to satisfy my pine users). If anyone's interested, I can generate a patch for that stuff. Other than that, it's been a real breeze. Dovecot is really simple to configure, and is faaaaaaaast! We have a kind of a wonky setup (multiple domains, multiple SSL keys, etc.) and Dovecot hasn't gotten mad even once. [Dovecot] a <blush> build/install question

This is probably an idiot (and certainly so basic as to be non-Dovecot) question, but I have been chasing my tail for a day or so on it, so I will, with humiliation, ask for guidance on it. Some time back I had asked if dovecot had to have a whole build tree of stuff to run or if any upgrade could be limited to just the executable and some libraries. I was told the latter, and given this list: dovecot (the executable) dovecot.conf libexec/imap libexec/imap-login libexec/dovecot-auth I had wanted to structure my build and install work so that, when update came out, I could build into a directory that was stamped with the time and version and ssl inclusion status. Every time I built I would create a new directory, and I would be able to everything to fall back with, in the old directories. Being that this is production, I wanted to be able to uplevel (or fall back) quickly. I should say I build on a build machine, since I don't want to have a compiler on the production machines; I specified the stamped unique name of this build directory du jour using the --prefix confiigure parm The configure, make and make install steps all go fine. Now I have to transfer those five files over to the target production machine, where I had planned to reference these essential DC files, dovecot itself, dovecot.conf, etc through links, like this: (while resident in the build directory which has been NFS imported onto the production target machine) > cp -p ./sbin/dovecot /usr/sbin/$buildver.dovecot > ln -sf /usr/sbin/$buildver.dovecot /usr/sbin/dovecot > > cp -p ./etc/dovecot-example.conf /etc/dovecot-example.$buildver.conf > > cp -p ./libexec/dovecot/imap /usr/libexec/$buildver.imap > ln -sf /usr/libexec/$buildver.imap /usr/libexec/imap > > cp -p ./libexec/dovecot/imap-login /usr/libexec/$buildver.imap-login > ln -sf /usr/libexec/$buildver.imap-login /usr/libexec/imap-login > > cp -p ./libexec/dovecot/dovecot-auth /usr/libexec/$buildver.dovecot-auth > ln -sf /usr/libexec/$buildver.dovecot-au Alas, when I actually tried to run dovecot, it was asking for its resource /in the original build tree/ location, which wasn't there. Is there some way I can do what I want? It seems like I could run the configure without the --prefix parm and have these five files end up in the standard place, but then you would always be building in the same place.
