Hi, I’m looking for a way to use two LDAP attributes to create a user-specific namespace to be expunged e.g. mailExpungeTrash=namespace/inbox/mailbox/%{ldap:mailTrashMailbox}/autoexpunge I can create the namespace fine returning the full string to be expunged: mailExpungeTrash=namespace/inbox/mailbox/Deleted\_Messages/autoexpunge However I want to alter the namespace using a second LDAP attribute like: mailExpungeTrash=namespace/inbox/mailbox/%{ldap:mailTrashMailbox}/autoexpunge Regards Thomas

Hello I removed the user in static userdb file, and deleted /var/mail/vhosts/$domain/$user dir. when I recreated the user, the system dirs (sent, draft etc) disappeared. Anything wrong here? Thank you. -- Henry R https://openmbox.net/

The session commands-repliesd is is more or less what I expect, although to make sense of this, you'll have to splice the input and output files together using timestamps to see the sequential flow of data. I forget what the symptoms you originally reported, but theoretically, you could simulate either client or server by feeding in the above data and see how the other end behaves. Typically, if some resource limit is hit, one side or the other will create a log or notification. Your INBOX is large, but not outrageous. Hi there, I have a bit old Dovecot instance (Ubuntu 14.04 - there is no chance to upgrade it), with these versions of packages: * Dovecot: 2.2.9 * OpenSSL: 1.0.1f Few days ago a client noticed me, that he can't reach his mails through his Office 365. He uses POP3S. I tried to set up a same client for this Dovecot server, but when I configured the POP3 protocoll, after the settings check Office says: Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. My domain (serebrtyajov.spb.ru) has all these "new" e-mail technologies configured. It works fine till I write to this mailing list. After that I've got several DMARC reports about "spam" from my domain. All these reports are about my mailing list post. I don't have such problems with other mailing lists (FreeBSD ones, OpenJDK ones, and others). Looks like mailing list software for this mailing list is misconfigured. lmtp userdb can't resolve users

Hello, I use postfix with dovecot as an lmtp LDA with unix users and multiple domain names and mailboxes in Maildir format placed in domain directory like: /home/mainuser/homes/user(a)domain.tld/Maildir or /home/mainuser/domains/domain2.tld/homes/user(a)domain2.tld/Maildir which have the main user as a group and user@domain.tld/user@domain2.tld as owner Postfix have virtual_alias_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/virtual there in virtual file there is map like: user(a)domain.tld user-domain(a)domain.tld and in /etc/passwd there are actually 2 users with the same home dir and same UID/GID (only the username is different) and in postfix mailbox_transport = lmtp:unix:private/dovecot-lmtp The issue is that when postfix passes the email for local delivery to dovecot lmtp it sends the username as user-domain.tld(a)serverhostname.tld but dovecot is configured with !include auth-system.conf.ext can't resolve this username thus fails to deliver. I've found a workaround in the net to use custom userdb just for lmtp like this: protocol lmtp { mail_plugins = $mail_plugins sieve userdb { driver = passwd-file args = username_format=%n /etc/passwd } } which works but produce some warnings because there is the root user (ID 0) and actually is a dirty workaround Is there more elegant solution??

mdbox vs. maildir format

hey, i am considering changing my mailbox format from maildir to mdbox. the reason for this is mainly, b/c i have (a) multiple large mailboxes with tens of thousands of mail files, and (b) most of these mails files have a size significantly smaller than the sector size of the disk. so, since the emails themselves are only about nGB large, the disk space used is at least twice as much, if not even three times. i know, hard disk space is 'cheap', but still... but then i read at https://doc.dovecot.org/admin_manual/mailbox_formats/dbox/ the following: [...] you must not lose the dbox index files, as they can’t be regenerated without data loss. so, raid is mandatory, which is already the case, but what about backup? how can i achieve a backup/snapshot of both, the mdbox (nfs share) and the index files (local raid) and assure they are consistent? greetings...

Unseen field reported by imap status command returns wrong count for shared mailboxes on dovecot cluster

Hello, We recently migrated our mail server to a dovecot cluster of 5nodes, a dovecot proxy, 2directors and 2dovecot backends. All dovecot nodes run version 2.19.1. We use a glusterfs mounted volume on the backends forthe mail storage. We noticed that when issuing the IMAP command to check forUNSEEN messages formails on the shared namespace instead of seeing the value of the unseen messages of the user that the mailbox has been shared to, the value of the unseen messages of the owner of the mailbox is returned. This behavior causes thunderbird when getting new messages forshared mailboxes, to show briefly all messages of the mailbox as unseen forthe user before showing the correct unseen count forthe shared mailbox. The mail location of the shared mailboxes is defined with imapc storage type as described inthe documentation. Is this a dovecot bug? Can we configure a different dovecot configuration setting so that imap status command reports the correct unseen field count when mail location is an imapc storage location? Dovecot mail-crypt webmail can't read encrypted messages

I'm trying to setup Dovecot with mail-crypt plugin with per-user encryption. I have configured mail-crypt plugin as per official guide here: https://doc.dovecot.org/configuration_manual/mail_crypt_plugin/ After that I created a user and an encrypted key by running this command: doveadm -o \plugin/mail_crypt_private_password=12345 mailbox cryptokey generate -u mail(a)example.org -URf (replacing dummy data ofc) I can log in to webmail (and Dovecot) just fine, emails are getting sent and delivered. I have also checked the storage and the messages seem to be stored encrypted. However, I can't read the emails in webmail (just headers can be seen) and in Dovecot logs I can see the following error: failed: Private key not available: Cannot decrypt key ### Cannot decrypt key ### <8632: Password not available (FETCH RFC822.HEADER) There seems to be an issue with mySQL query. The query I'm using (Select username as "user", password,"%w" as userdb_mail_crypt_private_password from mailbox;) seems to work just fine, when run from mysql prompt it outputs the usernames and passwords, but the error is still there (Cannot decrypt key ### Password not available). Any ideas? What am I missing?

In the past I was testing a bit with the one from Apple, but I think it is being discontinued because of converting the python 2 code. I am looking for some experience with a setup provisioning >10k users. Not that I have such requirement, but I want to know if the solution is stable, efficient and optionally can scale. I need something efficient, because I do not have to many resources and high iops available. Again, a bit more reading got me to adding this to my passdb config: username_filter = *(a)domain-a.com This way, I can control which domains get to authenticate via my ldap backend, which gives me time to design a good way of saving other attributes there. If anyone have other ways of doing this, ie., having multiple domains on ldap/freeipa and getting an elegant integration with Dovecot, I’d be glad to hear. So I have the following users: francis(a)domain-a.com <mailto:francis@domaina.com> francis(a)domain-b.com <mailto:francis@domain-b.com> Those are separate users which their own mailboxes. However, I have a freeipa that is configured for the `domain-a.com <http://domain-a.com/>` realm. However, since I am using `%n` for the uid search: auth_bind_userdn = uid=%n,cn=users,cn=accounts,dc=domain-a,dc=com And pass_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=%n)) It of course leads up to both users above being able to authenticate with the same password. Hello, I moved my buildsystem to an other platform (I do not fully control) and now receive this error on "make check" Error: program tcp:127.0.0.2:42027: connect(::1) failed: Connection refused test_program_refused ................................................. : FAILED The build run on jenkins buildnodex spawn up on a kubernetes cluster. What I noticed so far: the buildnode opereate ipv4 only but has an entry in /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 c4a84c76f0d6 ::1 c4a84c76f0d6 Maybe that's the glitch ... I tried dovecot-2.3.15 and 2.3.19.1. Both fail (only the portnumber differ) Is there an option to disable only one specific test? I dislike to skip "make check" at all. Andreas

I am looking for a user friendly way to have a user to tell the 'server' to either store or remove an email address. a. My first thought was to use imapsieve for this and have an imap sieve plugin store/remove the email address of the message that is being dragged into a predefined monitored folder. This would work with any imap client b. I was thinking about the message Flagged[1]. I am curious how would I be able to detect this (in sieve)? This does not seem to be stored in the source of the message. Although every client seems to support it, it would probably conflict with every day use cases. c. Then you have these colours and/or categories. But these do not seem to propagate across clients. Where are these even stored? Any ideas on how this can be done? Hello all, I have a 2 node director setup that uses checkpassword for authentication as well as backend assignment through director tags. director_servers = 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.20 director_mail_servers = 192.168.2.10@srv1 192.168.2.11@srv2 checkpassword writes the following to Dovecot on successful authentication: proxy=y\tdirector_tag=<tag>\tport=<port>ssl=yes\tdestuser=<email>\t This seems to work just fine. However, when I attempt to view a users current hash/initial config: # doveadm director status "user(a)domain.com" Current: n/a (expires -1) Hashed: Initial config: I get null data. There does appear to be a hash mapping of some sort however: # doveadm director map -u user(a)domain.com 1140334690 # doveadm director map -h 1140334690 user(a)domain.com The use of doveadm director move has no effect. doveadm reports it moved the user, but it does not: # doveadm -v director move "user(a)domain.com" 192.168.2.11 Info: User hash 1140334690 moved to 192.168.2.11 When using checkpassword and supplying fields to Dovecot, should I also be including another field to populate hashes for director? I could be missing something obvious in the docs. I'm on version 2.3.18 (9dd8408c18). I have not included dovecot.conf due to the size. If someone needs to see it I can supply it.

I run a small email server for me and the missus. Six dovecot users. Our host is migrating our server instance. They usually (99.9999% lol) go off without a hitch. As we don't have dovecot running elsewhere, I'm assuming doveadm is the wrong tool. If we want to make a one-off backup prior to the migration, is shutting down postfix and running tar czf mailstorage.tgz /path/to/mail okay? Thanks.

I'm attempting to build the latest Dovecot, version 2.3.19.1, on Gales Linux, a distribution based on musl libc with all static linking. After working around some expected troubles to generate configure, such as the libtool and iconv.m4 dependencies, the build appeared to complete successfully. But on closer inspection, the plugins were installed as a bunch of .a and .la files rather than getting linked into any of the binaries, as would be necessary to actually use them. I determined that the probe for dynamic module support (DOVECOT_MODULES defined in 'm4/modules.m4') had returned a false positive: in the static configuration musl includes a stub dlopen() that always returns failure at runtime, so a compile-and-link-only test is not predictive. Libtool itself is affected in the same way, but it comes with the --disable-shared option which usually makes things works fine. Hi, i have working SPAM reporting implementend by imapsieve in debian's 2.3.13 dovecot. Recently i decide to add personal spam filter by bogofilter and use logic to learn/unlearn SPAM/HAM based on message flags. Here is example of moving message from Junk folder (the opossite logic is similar): if hasflag "$Junk" { execute :pipe "bogofilter" ["-Sn"]; removeflag "$Junk"; debug_log "Learned HAM (and unlearned)"; } else { execute :pipe "bogofilter" ["-n"]; debug_log "Learned HAM (only)"; } # mark as learned addflag "$NotJunk"; report ... When i move message, the debug lines in log shows, that logic works and flag is added as expected, but the other flag is not removed. Thus after moving mail from Junk, which has $Junk flag, it has both flags, the $Junk and $NotJunk. I tried to move removeflag action outside of condition and add it just before addflag, but the result is the same. For now i do not know if here is something wrong in my script, or i did some other mistake. On IRC cmouse tell, that removeflag was fixed in some early version (2.3.5 or so), but it doesn't work here. Hi! It is required to collect statistics about the time of the last IMAP and POP3 login of the user and the delivery of letters to him via lmtp. The last-login plugin is perfect. But I don't want to use heavy databases as the mail system service is served by the Oracle DB. The most suitable option, as I see, is to store statistics in the sqlite DB, but after going through all the options in the configuration file, I could not use sqlite. Also, by the way in EXIM MTA, there is verify syntax condition in data acl, which checks all email headers and validate that they are standards compliant and reject sending any email beforehand to your issue which has non-compliant header and offers the ability to remove such headers with condition handling e.g. if contained any Sieve header, to request removing message id headers with headers_remove and add compliant one with add_header, and I guess this will mitigate any mail service provider rejection issue. I have an email with the following header line: From: 'Thank you!Kohls' <Kohls-MNc(a)FeedbackKohlsOpinionRequestedlxecrftHO.com> I am trying to match that with: if address :contains "from" "Thank you!Kohls" { addflag "\\Seen"; fileinto "Junk"; stop; } However, the matching portion of the from address is only the section between < and >. Since there are changing sections that are different for each email, I can't use that. I wanted to match the stuff before <. I have tried numerous formats for the if statement but none of them have worked. What is the proper way to make that match work? Thanks, -- Doug

Custom post login scripting variables via ID command

Hi there, I wonder if dovecot would consider this feature request. In post login scripting, given USER, IP, LOCAL_IP, and userdb lookup fields, are only available, I want to push additional variables from web mail to dovecot using ID commands yet I looked at the source in imap-login-cmd-id.c and script-login.c it seems to be possible while I'm not an expert in C and IMAP standards and not sure if its something would break the standards. I hope the dev team to consider this and if anyone have a workaround or an idea with I can start to patch a workaround myself, please let me know as it would be very much appreciated. With thanks. I have the impression that variables like "${from}" are all being set from scanning the whole email again seeing these "if matches" statements. Is that not super inefficient? Say for testing purposes I would like to add sender email addresses to a database file (eg gdbm) per user. How would I go about doing this? Do I need to create something like in https://github.com/dovecot/pigeonhole/tree/src/lib-sieve/plugins Or can I just create a go binary, and parse data to it? Is there not something like a hello world example for this?

Duplicate UID warning in dsync backups

Hi, Running dovecot version 2.3.18 with mdbox storage. I run daily backups using dsync on the same server into maildir format. Several times per week I will get an error like the one below that prevents backups from completing. The error is always on my user, never any of my other couple dozen users. dsync(doug): Warning: Deleting mailbox 'INBOX': UID=133060 already exists locally for a different mail: GUIDs don't match (1657786027.M158587P19048.maildev.domain.com vs 581a08178e8ecf62f04700002bad4ea1) dsync(doug): Error: Couldn't delete mailbox INBOX: INBOX can't be deleted. Subsequent backups typically have a slightly different error. dsync(doug): Warning: Deleting mailbox 'INBOX': UID=132994 GUID=407c871b0ec1c562b51000002bad4ea1 is missing locally dsync(doug): Error: Couldn't delete mailbox INBOX: INBOX can't be deleted. Notice the UID and GUID are different from the first error. At this point I will identify 407c871b0ec1c562b51000002bad4ea1 in the source mailbox, and move it to another folder. More often than not that clears things up. The backup command I am using is dsync -u doug all backup maildir:/home/doug/.mailbkup/mailboxes My questions are: Is the "locally" referring to the source or the target of the backup? What might be causing this problem? What the heck is this guid: 1657786027.M158587P19048.maildev.domain.com" Note: The server is actually named mail.domain.com, not maildev.domain.com All file names in the backup maildir have mail.domain.com in them No files exist in the target maildir directory that begin with 1657786027* My original migration from mbox format to mdbox was tested and run on a server named maildev.domain.com. Is that why I am seeing a reference to maildev here? Is that name cached somewhere? Can it be corrected? Does it matter? Are there any options I should add to the dsync command to fix this problem? -- Doug

Hello, I've tried to find info (apart from looking at the sources) but it seems this isn't mentioned anywhere. The setting plugin { sieve = file:~/sievedir;active=~/.sievefilter } names the directory where the scripts are stored and the symlink pointing at one. Right now the sievedir seems to be created 0700 plus some - probably inherited - g+s. How could I change mode (to 02770 preferably)? Also the script files are created 0600 by managesieve which really would be nice to be 0660 instead. The main problem is that external programs shall stat() .sievefilter but they only share groups. Outlook 365 MUA produces dovecot changing filename on some mailbox

Hello I have a setup on which dovecot is the server in a domain on which mailboxes are >20GB, some of them are 150GB or more. When reconfiguring _some_ mailboxes with Outlook 365 (configuring a previously used mailbox on a new PC), the process takes too long even if mail visibility on Outlook is 3 months. Inspecting at INBOX cur directory I did note that the 'ls' command shows the last file listed is a file from year 2020, 2019 or whatever not being the last received mail; that means the alphabetical ordering of 'ls' is showing past years after the last received mail, i.e. dovecot changed the epoch in filename. This only happens with Outlook. If I issue 'lsof' (with grep) I see the file that is being renamed passing through tmp/ directory and after that, the file is placed under new/ directory (I guess) and Outlook sees a new email to sync, making the sync process too long... mails that have been synced are resynced... Take a look at the timestamp on filenames: 1662769412 corresponds to "Fri Sep 9 20:23:32 -04 2022" and 1662874176 corresponds to Sun Sep 11 01:29:36 -04 2022 but mails were neither sent nor received on that dates. Replicator Failure

Hello, I recently noticed the following errors in my log file and replicator status shows all accounts failed. I am seeing the same error on both hosts. "dovecot: doveadm(name(a)domain.com): Fatal: connect(192.168.1.250:12345) failed: Interrupted system call” # doveadm replicator status Queued 'sync' requests 0 Queued 'high' requests 0 Queued 'low' requests 0 Queued 'failed' requests 0 Queued 'full resync' requests 0 Waiting 'failed' requests 8 Total number of known users 8 Replication used to work and I do not know when it started failing. I restarted dovecot on both hosts to no avail. Any idea on how to get more information and resolve this issue? I cannot find anything else in the logs David

Using dovecot 2.3.7.2 with solr 8.11.2 when I do: doveadm search -u user mailbox INBOX subject "something" I get multiple mail ID's. The only way that I found to get around is to unsubscribe the INBOX folder and subscribe again. Then the error is gone until I delete a bunch of messages again. The error only occurs if I delete the messages within short time or select multiple (about 20msg at once). If I delete them one-by-one always waiting for expunge message in dovecot logs to appear then I can delete as many as I want. Hi folks, on a Rocky Linux 8.6 based home server I run Dovecot with an account that I use as an archive. Archive means, that from different Thunderbird instances I connect to that Dovecot via IMAPS to move emails there, that I want to keep. Since some days from all Thunderbird instances I can no longer connect to that Dovecot account. As on the Dovecot installation I work with a self signed certificat. I created a new self signed certificate yesterday with an expiry not before year 2032. That did not help, I see the same messages when I try to connect from Thunderbird. Just to see how Thunderbird is involved in the problem I installed Claws-Mail. From Claws-Mail I do NOT have those problems, I can access to Dovecot via IMAPS as expected. I do not understand why all my Thunderbird installations can no longer access Dovecot via IMAPS. This worked fine for about 18 months. I can't prove but I think on beginning of month it worked fine. Something happened meanwhile. If there is a problem with an SSL certificate (bad certificate: SSL alert number 42), which certificate makes the problem? The certificate used by Dovecot or some certificate used in Thunderbird? Bug report: TLS SNI for LDAP userdb/passdb

Cheers, Dovecot 2.3.4.1 (Debian stable) here, and the changelog does not offer any hope of salvation, so a bug report it is. The LDAP connections for userdb/passdb do not support SNI via TLS. Simple construct to reproduce this: 0.) Have a.pem with SAN `foo.example.com`, b.pem with `bar.example.com` 1.) Configure haproxy frontend with `bind *:636 ssl crt /foo/a.pem ssl crt /foo/b.pem` 2.) Try to use ldaps://bar.example.com/ in passdb, receive "auth: Error: LDAP: Can't connect to server: ldaps://bar.example.com" Expectation, of course, would be for this to work; most libraries should support it, it's probably just a matter of convincing the appropriate binding. Overquota flag and auth caching

Hello, I like the over quota flag mechanism in Dovecot. I found out that I get in trouble if a user gets over quota and I have turned on auth caching, because the cache does not automatically invalidate a user while toggling the flag. The cache still serves the old state. The result is that mails are still accepted, even a user went over quota resulting in bounces. Workaround is to flush a user from inside the toggle script, which solves the bounce problem, but it prevents the user from getting under quota before the user is flushed from the cache again. What is the correct way to use the over quota flag and which solutions can be taken to invalidate the user? Is it possible to do this in a Lua user backend? Any other method?
