[Dovecot] Multiple Dovecot instances over single mail store

Hi, I need to run two Dovecot instances with totally different authentication configs: first - passwordless, based on client SSL certificate; and second - regular password based (LDAP, passwd etc.). (As far as I know this cannot be achieved with single Dovecot instance; if I'm mistaken, please correct me). My intention is to give clients dual access to their mailboxes: some do own a SSL cert, others do not. I want to know whether it is possible at all. If possible, how do we implement proper concurrent access (locking, etc.) between the two instances to a single maildir-based store? I guess this should be possible since I know Dovecot can operate NFS-backed mail stores, e.g. in a load-balancing cluster setup. Second, is it OK to run the second instance in the same OS (we use Linux)? or chroot'ed or even virtualized solution will work better? Thank you! Zohan

[Dovecot] sieve/dovecot folder separator inconsistency

Hi, I'm running dovecot 1.0.15 and ran recently into a problem with the folder separators when using sieve scripts. The server is set to use a slash as a folder separator for all namespaces and announces this correctly when issuing the NAMESPACE command. We are using Ingo (http://www.horde.org/ingo/) of the horde framework to manage our sieve scripts. It creates the folder name / folder path to be used in the sieve scripts based on the result of the NAMESPACE given by the IMAP Server. It therefore created the path separated by slashes ("/"). According to my tests, the delivery agent along with sieve expects the folders to be separated by dots (".") instead of slashes. Is this a correct observation or can this be set using a parameter or something similar? The result of this otherwise inconsistent behavior is that a client who sticks to the provided namespace creates a folder path which cannot be understood by the deliver process. Hi List, optimizing the configuration on one of our servers (which was hit by a brute force attack on dovecot) showed an odd behavior. Dovecot Version 1.0.7 (CentOS 5.2) The short story: On one of our servers an attacker did a brute force attack on dovecot (pop3). Since the attacker closed and reopened the connection after every user/password combination the logs showed many lines like this: dovecot: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<test>,...... The problem: If the attacker wouldn't have closed and reopened the connection no log would have been generated and he/she would have endless tries. Not even an iptables/hashlimit or fail2ban would have kicked in. How to reproduce: telnet dovecot-server pop3 user test pass test1 user test pass test2 ... QUIT ->Only the last try gets logged. If I enable auth_verbose every attempt gets logged, but if I read the docs correctly this option should only be used for figuring out why authentication isn't working. Question: Is there any way to close the connection after the first wrong user/pass combination. So an attacker would be forced to reopen it? This would be perfect since an easy iptables/hashlimit would avoid such a brute force attack. Any other Ideas? Henry

Hi, We are using dovecot 1.1.11 on Solaris 10u6. Any ideas if there is something on dovecot we should tune to erradicate this? We are running a web front end on top of dovecot and hence have a lot of login/logout happening as the user navigates around. Hi, is anything like Cyrus IMAP's imapmagicplus option available for Dovecot? If not, would it be possible to implement as a plugin? > imapmagicplus: 0 > Only list a restricted set of mailboxes via IMAP by using userid+namespace syntax as the authentication/authorization id. Using userid+ (with an empty namespace) will list only subscribed mailboxes. It's a quite useful option for clients that don't understand subscriptions. E.g., I don't want to see all of my folders on my iPhone, by using userid+ I can limit them to a useful set. Juergen

Hi, We¹re migrating to a Cpanel hosting system. Our passwords are currently stored in MD5. I looked at the post login scripting to be able to start storing the plain text passwords as people login temporarily so we can automate our migration. It seems that the password is not available in the post login environment variables. Is there any way we can get access to the plain text password upon login so we can insert this into our user table? Best regards, Donovan

From the log excerpt, it appears that Postfix has been led to consider a temporary failure; unless I'm wrong, that's because Postfix didn't receive neither a "D.S.N text" string nor an EX_* fatal return code. From deliver.c, it seems that many calls to i_fatal() are liable to be executed before the -e option is taken into account (through the local variable stderr_rejection). As a result, I'm wondering under which circumstances exactly deliver is liable to return EX_NOPERM, so that Postfix may consider a permanent failure and bounce the message. Note that the question may somehow be re-phrased as: when invoked without the -e option, under which circumstances will deliver send a rejection message? 3. Doesn't failure_exit_callback() in deliver.c tend to merge many (possibly dissimilar) errors into the single EX_TEMPFAIL one? And BTW, is that function guaranteed to be always called with an EX_* value? Seems to be the case, but... ;-) TIA for your patience, Axel

Hi all I am in the process of migrating Courier to Dovecot, am using courier-dovecot-migrate.pl<http://www.dovecot.org/tools/courier-dovecot-migrate.pl>it works fine. I want to migrate each user as they login using post-login script (As i have huge no of users). We are using NFS storage, users are authenticated using mysql, User home directories as passed using variable mail ( usign mysql query). I am trying to execute postlogin script which does the conversion but unable to pass the user home directories . --*/etc/dovecot.conf mail_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/postloginscript.sh %h ---* %h ---- for home directory. ---*postloginscript.sh #!/bin/sh /usr/libexec/dovecot/courier-dovecot-migrate.pl --quiet --to-dovecot --recursive --convert $1 # This is for pop3 exec /usr/libexec/dovecot/pop3 ----* When i pass %h as argument its creating "%h" directory and writing dovecot-uidlist and rest the files in %h directory. I have postfix+ dovecot + ldap (AD). my system accepts user@domain as user@domain. as user(a)domain.com. To send as much to create the mailbox when I login to squirrelmail, for example. Problem is postfix, dovecot or from AD? I read in the list archives about work in progress on an lmtp delivery agent.As a previous cyrus user where that was the preferred delivery method from postfix, this sounds interesting. I was wondering whether it will handle recipient delimiters. ie will it be able to map user+foo(a)example.com to user(a)example.com? I'm not interested in the delivery into folder stuff, just the plain delivery to inbox. thanks, John

Dear Dovecot list, I recently switched from uw-imapd to dovecot to manage my huge mbox files (about 1 GB). I now observe a very strange behavior, difficult to reproduce reliably, which might be related to some misunderstanding on my part on how either dovecot works or imap labeling works. What I call "labeling" is the fact of marking some e-mail, in my e-mail client (currently Thunderbird), with a label, which can be chosen among five labels (plus the "no-label" case). Evolution also supports labeling. As far as I understood until a few days ago, when I put a label, say, number five, on an e-mail, a keyword "$Label5" is added on the "X-Keywords:" line of the corresponding e-mail in my mbox file. Removing the label simply removes the keyword on the same line. That is, at least, what happened with uw-imapd (not that I have seen that documented somewhere but this is what I observed). The label is thus stored on the e-mail server, not on the client hard disk, which is important for me as I extensively use that feature to sort e-mails, and need to access them from several different places (and find the same labels at the same places, naturally, whatever client I use). Since the change for dovecot, however, things are going strange. Sometimes the labels disappear for some reasons. Sometimes they stay there. And I can't reproduce the behavior, it just seems random. This is very annoying as it totally breaks my e-mail management. Currently there is something strange I can reproduce however, and if someone could explain me what is happening I guess it would be a good step towards a solution. I see a specific e-mail as being labeled in thunderbird, having label number five. I also tried with evolution, accessing the same imap folder, evolution also sees that e-mail as having a label number five. I tried running these clients from my imap server, and I tried thunderbird on a Windows box at home, and every clients agree: this e-mail has a "5" label. BUT when I open the mbox file directly on the imap server (using "less"), and scroll to that given e-mail, I see NO "X-Keywords: " line. How then can the e-mail clients know that this e-mail is labeled? Please note that this behavior does not happen with only one specific e-mail, but I take it as an example of what is strange. In fact I can see, especially at the end of the mbox file (thus the latest e-mails), that plenty of e-mails have either no "X-Keywords: " line or a line with "X-Keywords: " and nothing else, whereas they are seen as being labeled (and indeed I remember having labeled most of those through thunderbird). The former e-mails I checked in the m-box (for example, one month ago) all correctly have an X-Keywords line indicating "$Label5" or other appropriate labels. It seems like dovecot is keeping some track of labeled e-mails somewhere which is NOT in the mbox file, probably related to its indexing capabilities. But I don't know how that works and where these index files are stored, how to purge them and rebuild the index, and so on. Apparently these index files have remembered some e-mails as being labeled (which is good, because I indeed labeled them). But I'd like to know how that works to be able to better troubleshoot why sometimes the label disappear. Note that restarting dovecot does not change the label status of the e-mail, so the status must be stored somewhere on disk and not only in memory. Or is all these labeling stuff some unsupported, non-standard extension to IMAP that only uw-imapd supports? (I hope not because I find it very practical and I'd like to use it with dovecot as well!) Hi, I had some problems connecting TB 2.x with dovecot 2.0. TB2 complained about not being an IMAP4 server. TB 3 worked. It seems that dovecot 2.0 doesn't return capabilities when queried. Maybe some wrong config, thoug? Postfix 2.5.5 SpamAssassin 3.2.5 (under Perl 5.10.0) ClamAV 0.95.1 Dovecot 1.2.rc2 works fine on Fedora 10. Installed Dovecot and ClamAV from source and everything else using yum. I'm using the ClamAV plugin for Spamassassin: http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/ClamAVPlugin I'm calling Spamassassin with: /etc/postfix/main.cf: mailbox_command = /usr/bin/spamc -f -e /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver Postfix hands off to Spamassassin, which processes ALL mail (not just attachments) through the ClamAV plugin before parsing for spam, and then hands the whole mess off to Dovecot for 'deliver' to handle. How simple is that? Since ClamAV scanns all mail, it might be too processor-intensive for really large mail systems, but it is working great for our 120+ user system with lots of spam coming in. If you're using Procmail or some other preprocessor that can hand off to a pipe, then you could skip the plugin and pipe messages over a certain size (i.e. >1024) to clamd, instead. Enjoy! James

Hi all, I've got some namespace problems with dovecot 2.0 again. If I start dovecot 2.0 with same settings of namespace and maildir layout as dovecot 1.2, I don't see my folders above the Inbox. I see them as "INBOX/xxx" in the same root level as my INBOX. If I try to subscribe to the folders, I see them as "INBOX^xxx" (and cannot subscribe). My namespace settings: namespace private { separator = / prefix = "INBOX/" inbox = yes #hidden = yes list = yes subscriptions = yes } I tried nearly every separator/combination, but it won't work. Any ideas (to get it work like dovecot 1.2)? I've got no shared folders/namespaces, etc. Layout is plain Maildir. Regards, Sebastian

Hi Dovecot People, i have switched my system from courier-imap to dovecot and iam quite happy with it, the performance is well and i had nearly no problems. One little feature iam missing is in Courier i had a folder called "Outbox" there i could paste mails which i want to sent out. In some networks its not always available to sent mails via port 21, i know i could just set up my email server to another port but it was a nice feature. Is this a big afford or is it just alittle hack ? could it done via a little plugin ? Thanks Timo & all others for the great work ! Frank

Hi everyone: I use dovecot only as the imap server, For smtp and pop3, I use apache james. The dovecot version: 1.1.14 And the configuration is : protocols: imap ssl_disable: yes login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login mail_location: mbox:/usr/local/edupass/mail/repo/%u:INBOX=/usr/local/edupass/mail/%u auth default: passdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot-sql.conf userdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot-sql.conf I have no porblems to login. When I use "telent host 25" to send a email, dovecot read it no problems. But when I use outlook and foxmail to send a email, dovecot cann't read the email data. I compared the data that using the two way to send, and found the reason: use outlook and foxmail: at the beginning of the eamil data is "From zxjteacher_SP_LZU <zxjteacher_SP_LZU@myserver>"; and if I telnet host 25 to send the mail: at the beginning of the eamil data is "From <zxjteacher_SP_LZU@myserver>", so I delete "zxjteacher_SP_LZU", dovecot read it out. "zxjteacher_SP_LZU" is because that outlook and foxmail need an account name to represent the eamil address. So, anyone ever confront with this situation? Any helps appreciate. Thx.

[Dovecot] Expire Plug-in stopped

Good evening, While working with Dovecot 1.2rc4 on Fedora 10, I have been trying to get the Expire plug-in to auto delete messages for us. When I run the plug-in with the test flag, I receive the following message: /usr/local/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool --test Info: amy(a)example.com/Trash: stop, expire time in future: 1242953758 All messages were deleted before the expire plug-in was added. I understand that dovecot will only expire messages after they have been in the trash or junk longer then the time in dovecot.conf. So I have let this fail since Monday, but continue to receive the same error. A quick grep for expire from my Dovecot logs doesn't show any output. Also, when I look up this error on google, I see other peaple who's output shows a real date (not 1242953758), how do I know when this date is? I attempted an upgrade from 1.1.7 to 1.1.15 and encountered an apparent regression in handling gzipped maildir files. I have tried to narrow down the conditions under which it happens and reproduce it with as simple a case as possible. The actual mail application that exposed this problem is Squirrelmail. It's all confusing to me, hopefully this make some sense to others. Let me know if there is other testing I can help with. I'm running on Slackware 12.1 and have reproduced the same issue with both kernel 2.6.24.4 and 2.6.27.7. The filesystem is XFS. The content of the gzipped message does not seem to matter. David

Hi, Here is the situation, I hope somebody can help me. Our Email server running ubuntu 8.04.1 and dovecot 1.0.10 rebooted, and when it came back up the dovecot config had changed. Prior to the reboot, users stored their emails and folders in /var/mail/~username. Then the config became /var/mail/username for the main Inbox and /home/~username/mail for Folders. Now, none of the folders that users had created in their IMAP account are visible, and their contents are not in the main Inbox file. For example, the Drafts folder was there prior to the reboot, and now it had to be created in /home/username afterwards. These folders were not subfolders of the Inbox, but of the main IMAP root. All users were running Thunderbird as their client. Can they be recovered? But it seems, that my sieve-scripts on the local dovecot server are not recognised by this combination. Hi, I use a OpenLDAP for authentication. To authenticate a full DN as the user name must be used, like "cn=jim,ou=users,dc=example,dc=com". There are several domains, like example2.com and example3.com. I want to use Dovecot with ldap and authentication binds. For testing I use "auth_bind_userdn = cn=%n,ou=users,dc=%d" and the user name must provide as "jim@example,dc=com". To allow the special chars ("=,") in user name, I extend "auth_username_chars". Now my questions. Exists a real chance to attack the ldap directory with the extended "auth_username_chars"? And it's possible to use authentication binds with the regular "auth_username_chars" and a provided user names like "jim(a)example.com" in my special ldap directory structure? Currently I have a mail server running postfix and dovecot with users in mysql. I have Outlook (blich) clients checking IMAP mail on the server. I'd like to build some fault-tolerance into that system in case I have hardware failure. I've read through: http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailLocation/SharedDisk but I feel I need more information. My basic understanding is that I'll need 2 clustered systems running with shared disk space and shared IP. Performance/load-balancing isn't an issue for me, it's just fault-tolerance that I'm worried about. Don't know if anyone found this already (couldn't see anything in the archives about it) but maybe this is useful to someone else who finds the same problem. When following the instructions for setting up expire on v1.2+ for mysql backend at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire I got the following error: mysql> CREATE TABLE expires ( -> username varchar(100) not null, -> mailbox varchar(255) not null, -> expire_stamp integer not null, -> primary key (username, mailbox) -> ); ERROR 1071 (42000): Specified key was too long; max key length is 1000 bytes that's because it's a utf8 database where every char is 3 bytes so a 355 char index is 1065 bytes. it worked ok with the following modification: mysql> CREATE TABLE expires ( -> username varchar(100) not null, -> mailbox varchar(255) not null, -> expire_stamp integer not null, -> primary key (username, mailbox(200)) -> ); Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec) but maybe that's not such a good primary key, probably better to do: mysql> CREATE TABLE expires ( -> id integer not null auto_increment, -> username varchar(100) not null, -> mailbox varchar(255) not null, -> expire_stamp integer not null, -> primary key (id), -> key (username, mailbox(200)) -> ); Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec) John

Hi, Recently started receiving the error $SUBJECT. Soon after a number of segfault errors are reported for pop3-login. Based on my configuration, I believe I am set up to receive core files; however, my ulimit -c is 0. I have tried setting ulimit -c ... in /etc/init.d/dovecot and I have tried modifying /etc/security/limits.conf. In all cases /proc/[pid]/limits continued to report that my ulimit -c value was 0. What is the best process for capturing a core file from a login process (pop3-login). I have found some similar hits on the web for this; however, none appear to lead to resolution and in most cases the implementation includes imap, mysql, etc... Here is my dovecot.conf, any insight into the cause of this problem is greatly appreciated. [Dovecot] Timeout during imapsync

Hi, I'm using Imapsync to sync messages from an Exchange 2003 server to a Dovecot 1.1.11 server. The problem is that users' mailboxes are huge, several gigabytes with tens of thousands of messages. First Imapsync connects to Exchange and then to Dovecot, and then starts to get Inbox info from Exchange. By the time it gets this info, the connection to Dovecot has timed out. I realize the RFC calls for a 30 minute time out which I believe is hard coded into Dovecot. If there is a way around this by making a configuration change, please tell me. I have posted the same message on the Imapsync list in an attempt to find a work around with patched Imapsync. Thanks in advance. Craig Jackson

I am migrating our mail server from Courier-IMAP to Dovecot. We currently use maildir storage format. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Dovecot's dbox format over maildir? Does anyone have any performance benchmarks for both? What do people use to test performance? We are running on a Mac OS X box (10.5.7) using Postfix 2.6. Thanks, James.

Hi, recently moved our server from mbox format to Maildir format. Almost all the users are very happy with this, since the speed had increased very much. I used mb2md to do the conversion and on this task all the mailboxes that had "." (dot) on their names were converted to "_". But there is one issue with this, we also use the webmail that comes with Phpgroupware, and it uses some mailbox that have fixed named like INBOX.Sent, INBOX.Draft and so on. When their names were changed the sent messages didn't get saved anymore, so I had to move them back to the old names. After that the sent messages returned to be saved again, but another troube showed up. As they start with .INBOX and have "." on the names, Dovecot shown them as a subdirectory of the INBOX and we got some people upset with this. I need help on configuring Dovecot to not show them this way, because if you look the .INBOX.Sent either on the webmail or by outlook, the field displayed is the sender, witch is not desired. When I did the conversion, to keep the compatibility with the old server (quota, avoid I/O botleneck, etc), I set two Maildirs, one at /var/spool/mail/$USER, to be the INBOX and another at the user home. Hello, I wish to get "Fetchmail Wake" works in my environment. This plugin send SIGUSR1 to fetchmail so it wakes up when mail client grabs mail. For the moment "Fetchmail Wake" is executed by mail_uid (defined in dovecot.conf) which is not enough to send signal to fetchmail daemon (and access to fetchmail.pidfile). Thank you!
