Great. Thank you so much for responding. It hangs at Tying 127.0.0.1 The funny part is that one day it works fine and the next day it just hangs. And its not that the service is completely unresponsive. If 200 users try to connect, 10 get through and are able to download. However which 10 get through depends on luck! Its been going on for the past one week and really driving me crazy. I have changed everthing including the server, but the problem persists. How do I get a clue where the problem is? Am badly in need of help here. Problem, Unable to identifie smtp.solutions.com as a trusted site. with thunderbird, and MS outbreak is failing too. server works great with the dialog box being clicked over and over. part of the info in the cert. Object Identifier (2 5 4 5 ) = 07969287 CN = Go Daddy Secure Certification Authority OU = http://certificates.godaddy.com/repository O = GoDaddy.com, Inc. L = Scottsdale ST = Arizona C = US dovecot.conf ssl_cert_file = /NFS/exim/new.pem ssl_key_file = /NFS/exim/smtp.solutions.com.key { created the req for cert with this key on this server } inside the new.pem smtp.solutions.com.crt ( paid $29 for this ) gd-class2-root.crt gd_intermediate.crt I have tried many tests about 5 hours worth using the ssl_ca_file and pointing it to different files I have from godaddy. and various combinations of things I found on the net. can anybody provide a cookie cutter here do this: with a godaddy $29 dollar ssl cert.. to get this dovecot server running.. { by the way I have great luck in apache with these things.. } thanks in advance Terry

This is 64bit AIX 5.3. Looking through previous versions of dovecot, I see this warning. I didn't realize this was something bad until today. My environment uses mbox/mbox-snarf plugin. Hi. We user ftp-solr plugin and have problem with solr-1.3+ with HTMLStripWhitespaceTokenizerFactory (Solr schema in attachments). In some maildir's present messages with wrong "Content-Type: " fields in attachments. For example: " Content-Type: TEXT/mspowerpoint; name="Zapatec_6zap_netvibes_1.ppt" " Indexing for this messages is stop with "fts_solr: Indexing failed: 500 Internal Server Error". In solr log is: " SEVERE: java.io.IOException: Mark invalid at java.io.BufferedReader.reset(BufferedReader.java:485) " (mail list with discussion: http://markmail.org/message/2fnfiwygvehjngyr#query:SEVERE%3A%20java.io.IOEx…) Look's like dovecot try to index attachments like this. Also for some messages we have same error. Dovecot stop indexing of box and each search we have lag and CPU load on server. So we need to make dovecot more "stable" to this error. For first time , will be good, just ignore problematic messages with error from solr. Let's discuss this issue, because this is general problem. I have mails to several addresses mixed up in several POP3 boxes and need to sort them out and deliver them based on the target address. e.g. michael@domain1 and michael@domain2 go to my box etc. I can't see where I identify the addresses and allocate the appropriate storage area. [Dovecot] Installed include files

Currently when using configure --enable-header-install and doing make install the include files get installed to their own subdirectories, like: /usr/local/include/dovecot/src/lib/ /usr/local/include/dovecot/src/lib-mail/ ..etc.. But using that is kind of annoying, because you have to give -I paths to all of them with their full directories. The worst thing about that is that it requires having some kind of a --with-dovecot=path configure parameter. It would be nice if you could simply do: CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include/dovecot ./configure Just like for any other include option. But that's not really possible. One possible way to fix it would be to just install all the .h files to a single directory, /usr/local/include/dovecot/ and make sure there aren't any conflicts (there currently are a few). But whis would make it more difficult to find out what files are related. Another possibility would be to put the subdir paths to all #include lines. Such as #include "lib-mail/mail-types.h" instead of just #include "mail-types.h". This seems kind of annoying to use, but would it be clearer? I'm not really sure. Anyone have any thoughts?

[Dovecot] Case sensitive oddity when mail delivered.

Currently running Postfix/Dovecot1.1.8 with mysql storing the user data and delivering to folders as determined by dovecot using dovecot's "deliver" as defined in postfix's master.cf Mail location is determined by mail_location = maildir:/var/spool/mail/%d/%n/Maildir If I have an account user1(a)example.com it works just fine. However, when mail is sent to USER1(a)EXAMPLE.COM it also delivers, but ends up creating a new file structure so I end up with /var/spool/mail/example.com/user1 (with lower case mail in it) and /var/spool/mail/EXAMPLE.COM/USER1 (with uppercase mail in it) which is decidedly not good. Looks to me like wherever %d and %n are pulled from is pulled out of the email, but not lower-cased. Any ideas where I would look to change this value before the email is delivered to the mailbox? Hi, list! I use Dovecot 1.1.14 at work. It is configured to manage IMAP and IMAPs. Exim is the MTA of the Network. Of course, I installed SpamAssassin and ClamAV to check all incoming E-Mails. An, of course, some E-Mail marked as Spam are Ham and some E-Mail marked as Ham are Spam... To teach SpamAssassin I create for every user two folder: "DochSpam" (for Spam E-Mails not marked) and "FalscheSpam" (for Ham E-Mails marked as Spam). Every hour a cronjob search for E-Mails in these folders and call sa-learn to teach SpamAssassin. All run perfectly, but I'd like to modify this method and call automatically the script when the user move an E-Mail to DochSpam or FalscheSpam. I searched in Google, but I cannot found any useful link... How can I trigger an action (script calling) based on event (E-Mail will be moved to a folder) in Dovecot? Thanks for your help! I want to add one Dovecot Proxy server and make him understand based on user domain - were it need to transfer a connection. I use LDAP auth based on "mail" attribute. It is possible? P.S. The user base is in a Postgres database. We'd like a quota warning message to be injected into the maildir at 80% and 95% of occupation reached. >From the logs, it looks like dovecot is correctly reading the quotas from the DB. Hi, I have set a dovecot-1:1.0.10-1ubuntu5.1 server on top of a Ubuntu 8.04 LTS box and everything goes fine. All my users are on a LDAP database integrated via nss_ldap, so from the dovecot point of view they are all local system users. Now I want to set maildir quota for everybody, and was wondering if I could store quota limits per user on LDAP. As I read on http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/Dict, there seem to be no way to do that, am I right? It is ok for me to manage the current usage on Maildir++, but would like to retrieve the quota information from the LDAP server. What do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance for any hint or rtfm. http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-2.0/ I just did the initial commit for master process rewrite, which marks the beginning of Dovecot v2.0. Several things are still missing/broken, but at least I was just able to successfully log in using imap :) I left v1.3 hg tree there for now, but once v2.0 tree is fully usable I'll just delete the v1.3 tree. Note the new dovecot-master-example.conf, which you'll need to !include to get the services running. Some settings have also been removed because they're now more generically set in the dovecot-master.conf. I'm thinking that perhaps the config process could still be run in compatibility mode where it's able to use an existing v1.x dovecot.conf and translate the old settings to new settings.

[Dovecot] Slow connections with POP3 service

Hi All, I am facing a very strange issue with the pop3 server for the past one week. I run my mail service using sendmail & use UW-IMAP for POP3 & IMAP service. We have around 5000 users. Suddenly for the past one week I am facing very slow connections for POP3 alone on that server. Other services such as SMTP, IMAP, telnet, ssh etc work fine. Assuming that UW-IMAP may have an issue, I download the latest dovecot, compiled it and installed it. This also gives the same issue. I do not any firewall issues nor iptables is enabled. I have checked on the network to ensure that I do not have any kind of virus or DoS attacks using an IDS. I am unable to see any 'Strange' messages in /var/log/messages or maillog. What is strange is that it works one day without any issues and the next day the problem persists. Even a telnet to localhost on port 110 is very very slow. Can someone help with any ideas on how to troubleshoot? This is our production box. Thanks V S Rao

I posted the trigger for v1.1 versions of Dovecot on the Wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/Dict ) and while I understand the comment posted about two process inserting at the same time, I'm not sure I understand how this is fixed in v1.2 other than via the revised trigger in the Wiki. Does someone have a known working trigger that will handle a double insert correctly? Also, out of curiosity why wasn't the code for dict written to do an update first and then an insert if this failed? That would eliminate the need for this trigger. Thanks. -Warren

Hello, I finally got an INBOX to work, but is virtual mailbox plugin only meant to create a virtual inbox, or should I be able to have an Allmails virtual folder that is viewable in my imap client? if ~/virtual/ is my location, would I create an Allmails directory in the virtual/ or virtual/INBOX/Allmails. [Dovecot] Dovecot auth user lookup patch for maildrop

Hi, recently I started using maildrop as a MDA doing lightweight filtering in a Postfix/Dovecot mail server combo. Only thing missing was the fact that maildrop couldn't perform user lookups against a user database that was already being served by Dovecot (for smtp auth in Postfix and for imap access obviously) in order to easily determinate proper mailbox location and home directory of my "virtual" users when delivering e-mails. I wanted to avoid having another authentication daemon running (Courier Authlib) that would be serving this data to maildrop, so I've spent some time to write an extension for maildrop that would allow it to do user lookups directly against Dovecot in a similar way how they are done by Dovecot's LDA deliver. For everyone that are using maildrop in a similar setup that may be interested in this extension, a patch against maildrop version 2.0.4 can be downloaded from the following location: http://www.max.rs/ozone/maildrop-2.0.4-dovecotauth.patch.txt When this patch is applied, maildrop will be extended with another command line option "-t", which can be used to specify the location of Dovecot's master auth socket that will be used when performing user lookups. There's a readme file (README.dovecotauth) together with patch with a little bit more information regarding the use of this extension. [Dovecot] Virtual mailboxes, howto, examples, help? =)

Using 1.2rc3 maildir format maildir /mail/example.com/j/johndoe/{cur,new,tmp} Is there more documentation and examples on how to configure virtual mailboxes, or maybe more info on what it is suppose to do? From what I could understand on the wiki, i could create a fake/virtual folder under /mail/example.com/j/johndoe/virtual/allmail/ and inside that dir create dovecot-virtual with INBOX all And then in my mail client i would see virtual/allmail and when i click that folder it shows me mail from all my normal maildir folders? Is my thinking of how to use virtual mailboxes totally off, or am I trying to use it for what it is suppose to be used for? So far i have been messing with various values = yes/no using the following namespace private { prefix = virtual/ separator = / # location = virtual:~/virtual location = virtual:~/virtual:LAYOUT=maildir++ list = yes inbox = no subscriptions = yes hidden = no } # The default namespace that is visible to IMAP clients namespace private { prefix = separator = / location = maildir:~/ list = yes inbox = yes subscriptions = yes hidden = no } I dont know if I am retarded in my lack of ability to figure this out or what

Hi, i used to use http://xi.rename-it.nl/debian/ experimental-auto main to update dovecot 1.2 with ubuntu horde didnt done for a time now i get broken deps with apt like -- dovecot-common: Hängt ab: libgssapi-krb5-2 (>= 1.6.dfsg.2) ist aber nicht installierbar Hängt ab: libk5crypto3 (>= 1.6.dfsg.2) ist aber nicht installierbar Hängt ab: libkrb5-3 (>= 1.6.dfsg.2) ist aber nicht installierbar --- ( sorry german *g ) i updated libkrb53 from jaunty but this doesnt fix it any idea what to upgrade to get dovecot 1.2 updated again its a test server so i am free for unstable packs etc no pruduction services running -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

I am starting to use Squirrelmail a little bit more to read my mail during the day and I seem to be getting this error more frequently while using Squirrelmail. Just a coincidence or do you think using Squirrelmail might have something to do with it? Hi, I use dovecot 1.0.15 on Debian Lenny. In my /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf, i use user_query = SELECT path, 33 AS uid, uid AS gid FROM mail_users WHERE alias = '%u' The result is something like this /var/alternc/mail/d/denis_collectifs.net and is the correct location (the Maildir is created by an script) But the problem is that dovecot creates (when you log in for the first time) a directory in the form of the exact address. Here for example, /var/alternc/mail/d/denis(a)collectifs.net And so all connections will be on an empty location. How is it possible to resolve this? As mail_location I have this "maildir:/var/alternc/mail/%1u/%u/Maildir" which is not really correct. [Dovecot] Mailbox is locked?

Hello, I recently upgraded from Dovecot 1.1.8 to 1.1.14, and I've started to get errors I never got before. Specifically, I'm getting "Mailbox is locked, will abort in xx seconds" errors. My mail client (mutt) will just sit there in the background (presumably in IDLE) and randomly will show this error (I THINK it has something to do with delivering new messages to the folder; I use the dovecot LDA). Nothing else about my configuration has changed, just the version of dovecot. Does anyone know what could be causing these? I assume it has something to do with the index files, but... Nothing interesting shows up in the log files. How do I get rid of these error messages? Or even begin tracking them down? [Dovecot] overnight clients causing lockfiles to be converted to root-owned messages on debian lenny

Greetings all, After running for more than a year without issue on debian lenny while it was in the testing- we're now experiencing problems under Lenny/Stable. Dovecot now converts some sort of lockfile into messages, and they're owned by root. The result is a mess; clients can't read their mailboxes with the root-owned files, and when the file is changed to be owned by them, many mail clients don't like the zero-length message (Outlook being one major client with this "problem".) This happens to users who leave their email clients open overnight. I haven't found a cronjob that could be responsible for this. Further details- 64 bit machine, we use maildir, /var/spool/mail is on an xfs volume, and we run postfix, procmail, and spamassassin. Dovecot version is 1.0.15; the machine is fully up-to-date with Debian Stable (Lenny.) Hi, I'm having some trouble getting the expire plugin to work, and I'm not sure where to turn for troubleshooting. This is on 1.2rc3. To my dovecot.conf, I've added: mail_plugins = expire under the protocol imap and lda sections. I also added: dict { expire = mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-expire.conf } plugin { expire = Trash 30 Trash/* 30 Spam 30 expire_dict = proxy::expire auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master } /etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-expire.conf contains: -- connect = host=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock dbname=email user=XXX password=XXX map { pattern = shared/expire/$user/$mailbox table = expires value_field = expire_stamp fields { username = $user mailbox = $mailbox } } -- I created the table and granted all permissions to the user. The socket is the same one used by the auth_socket process, so that should work. Dovecot restarts fine, but the table is empty. A couple questions: First, the mailboxes to expire are stored as user(a)domain/.INBOX.Trash. How should I list them in the conf file? Also, is there any way to have the system come up to date since older emails already exist in those boxes and should be deleted. Will it detect those, or only start to delete old emails that were delivered after the plugin was enabled? Second, should the table be empty if mail has been delivered & deleted since I enabled the plugin? I assumed it would start to fill. Jeff

[Dovecot] Quota for Shared Folders

Good morning list, first of all: dovecot works really great, the performance is overwhelming (especially compared to courier), the configuration flexible as hell, it is good documented - I love this software. But as things get complicated, I think I need some additional help. I'm using dovecot to replace the currently used courier-mailserver in a shared hosting environment based on the control panel Confixx. Confixx uses per default filesystem-users, giving each mailuser a filesystem-quota, mails are stored in ~/Maildir/. The imap-logins are all in the form of "webxpy", being "webx" the customer (prefix 'web', and a increasing number), and "py" the number of the pop account. Because of the filesystem-quota we moved the indexes to another partition. This basic setup with dovecot works great, with auth directly against the confixx-database etc, imap_quota-plugin, quota-plugin working as expected. We now want to implement shared folders for each customer: all mailaccounts of a customer should be able to subscribe to per-customer shared folders in a specified maildir, thus I re-mapped the usernames with a new user_query (and password_query) to the format of "webxpy@webx" - being "webx" the virtual domain and "webxpy" the mailaccount, but still using "webxpy" as the imap-login (no need for customers to change the login). This also works, we even can control with ACL-vfiles the permissions of specified users, to enable or disable specific folders. The shared folders are specified as a new public namespace and the "domain" is part of the storage-path (see configuration at the end of this mail). To allow easier quota-management (no need to create a new system-user), the quota of the shared folders is maildir-based, with a mysql-quota-dictionary (later, all accounts will be migrated to a virtual-user-mailstorage, with only maildir-quota and no fs-quotas). But when things come to the shared quota, I currently don't know how to solve the wishes of the customer: The current solution for shared folders (at the customer's local site) is based on mdaemon, every shared folder (of a customer, not a single mail-account) has a quota assigned. This quota cannot be exceeded by the users, no more mails can be saved into the shared folders if used space exceeds the hard quota-value. As my tests have shown, dovecot uses a different approach to the quota-issue: users can always move their mails from local folders to the shared namespace, regardless of the shared quota. The quota itself is only checked when receiving new mails, where the combined quota (local + shared) may not be exceeded. If it is, the mail is not delivered to the mailbox. Our quota-config is this: > quota_rule: *:storage=50M:messages=1000 > quota_rule2: Trash:storage=50M:messages=100 > quota_rule3: shared*:storage=100M:messages=1000 (also being altered by user_query, but the scheme is the same) As of dovecot-wiki, this means: Users can save "50M + 50M + 100M" of mails in all specified Folders, so the storage-value for the "shared*"-folders works additionally to the "*"-storage-value. Different from this, we want the following to happen: If the customer exceeds the shared folders-quota, his mail-users may not move mails from INBOX to shared, this move-operation should fail with a reasonable error-message. If the local quota of a mail user is exceeded, new mails should be rejected/delayed, regardless of the shared quota-value (e.g., shared quota exceeded, but no local mails [new mail-account], mails should be delivered to INBOX). Sieve-filters are not a problem, we do not allow user-specific sieve-rules (managesieve is disabled). Hopefully, I could explain my issues to you. [Dovecot] Segfault in ACL Plugin + user shared folders

Hi Timo, I have another problem, this time with user shared folders: User "markus" shared the folder "ForTest" to test: SETACL "INBOX/ForTest" test akxeilrwts dovecot-acl and shared-mailboxes.db have been successfully updated. As user "test" the folder (and "#User" namespace) is not visible.
