[Dovecot] Authentication Error Message formats

I have been using UW's IMAP server and I am converting to Dovecot for Maildir support. When a user fails authentication, or a user does not exist, it appears that the same message is used for these events. Is there a way to indicate that the user does not exist (Invalid user), and authentication Failure (Failed Password)? Clearly these two failures indicate a different error in the system. One that some forgot their password, the other indicates a dictionary attack. -- Albert E. [Dovecot] Empty/corrupt mail leads to duplicate delivery

Hi, when the attached mail was stored in a maildir, fetching mail via POP3 lead to multiple delivery of mails in that maildir to the client (Outlook). I replaced the domain with dots. I tried to reproduce the behavior, but when I send an empty mail via telnet, nothing happens. Hello, I migrate my server POP3/IMAP recently the Courier-IMAP for Dovecot and am having problems when the user configures your e-mail client to leave a copy of mail on the server. All mail in the inbox, are brought all the time that you check your mailbox input via POP3, causing a large traffic of unnecessary data every time. In my opinion you should bring only the new mail, unread. Can you tell me if this is a configuration issue on Dovecot? Thank you all -- Att. [Dovecot] cannot use password-file for userdb

OK, I am attempting to use the userdb connection to facilitate per user migration to Maildir format from mbox. Here's the first user: more /home/dovecot.passwd health:$1$MCtvt/Tz$FmKqU/cbWlBhKnhc5W.Ko.:1152:1152:/home/health:userdb_mail=maildir:~/Maildir The configuration was set up as: userdb passwd { } I changed this to: userdb passwd-file { args = /home/dovecot.conf } And unfortunately the dovecot daemon dies after successfully launching. [Dovecot] mbox to Maildir conversion

I've been running a mbox solution using UW's IMAP server. I've run it for years. Now do to heavy message volumes, I've decided to to take the plunge to convert to the Maildir format. I am currently testing a single user, and have successfully converted the mail messages from mbox to Maildir format, and now I am setting up the procmail tool to place the messages into the correct folder. I have been following the http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/MailFormat formula, but now have a question. New Messages are now being placed into the ~user/Maildir/new folder. However, when I attempt to retrieve those messages, Dovecot does not find them. Why not? -- Albert E. [Dovecot] Possible header parsing problem

Hi, I ran into a problem wherein my mail client (RoundCube) would not display a message from a Dovecot IMAP server (claiming that the message had no content). The raw source of the message looked fine, but the body structure returned by Dovecot only had the first text/plain part and not the alternative text/html part. The message looks like: ... headers removed ... X-Mailer: Lotus Notes Release 6.5.1 January 21, 2004 Message-ID: <...> From: user(a)host.domain Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2008 14:15:55 -0600 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="=_alternative 006F3A73872574E8_=" This is a multipart message in MIME format. --=_alternative 006F3A73872574E8_= Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii blah blah blah --=_alternative 006F3A73872574E8_= Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/html; charset=us-ascii <br><font size=2 face="sans-serif">blah blah blah in HTML</font> --=_alternative 006F3A73872574E8_=-- I did a little bit of tracing through the parsing code (message-header-parser.c:message_parse_header_next()) and it appeared that the boundary in the Content-Type header was not parsed correctly, evidently because the header line was folded in the middle of the boundary string. RFC 822 appears to allow folding in a quoted string like this (§3.3 "quoted-string"), so I'm curious whether the parsing is working correctly. Thanks for your help! [Dovecot] Gah, pop3 falling over

Why would I be seeing a million of these? dovecot: 2008-10-27 09:12:33 Warning: chdir(/mail/mail/domain/u/username/) blocked for 18 secs Two servers were working fine and then all of a sudden this morning bam 500 load and theres a million dovecots and tons of these lines in the logs. It is like everyone gets up at exactly 8:30 and hits the pop3 server at once. Anyway, dovecot 1.1.5, nfs mount, debian lenny/sid amd64, 2.6.26-1-amd64 i had the performance mode options for login configured, i just set back to the single process per login though, I think that hasnt fallen over that way but I really dont remember anymore. I included the dovecot -n using the suggest performance login settings? [Dovecot] Problems with the pop3 part of dovecot

Hello, I originally just typed up a 5 paragraph essay on my problems but just deleted it all. basically I need to find out where to start looking to find out what is the problem with my dovecot pop3 setup. I switched from courier imap/pop3 to dovecot imap/pop3. I have had super high loads (40+ and overnight one server went to 511) and its been a nightmare fighting with this new setup for the last two weeks. I did manage to narrow the problem down to it being with the pop3 part of dovecot. I am not sure why the load keeps going so high. The first week I attributed it to users having to redownload mail and reindex (we were aware of the UIDL problem), but two weeks later one of my machines overnight went to 511. I have changed so many config options to try to make it work that I have become overwhelmed and feel like I have tried everything to get the right settings. I am running four 64bit machines with amd 9850 cpus, 4 gigs ram, the mailstore is nfs mounted, the nfs server is using xfs. Debian lenny/sid. I dont know what to do, I am almost debating going back to courier pop3 and going through the week of support calls of customers downloading mail again but that is a last ditch effort. I can understand if i just need to wait it out while things are indexed for dovecot and stuff, but machines falling over and loads of 40 to 500 just for dovecot seems not right. so, where do I start?

Hello, My first time on this list, just switched from courier imap/pop3 system to dovecot. Imap part is great, pop3 seems to suffer, been fighting it for a week. Anyway, the reason for this post is that I have seen these pop up in my logs, and on one of my mailheads there were some 50 lines of this dovecot: 2008-10-26 09:33:54 Error: auth(default): BUG: Authentication client gave a PID 15661 of existing connection Is this really a bug or anything to be concerned with? I just installed 1.1.5. I am using Debian lenny/sid on amd64, phenom 9850 4g ram, nfs mounted maildir format xfs storage.

Just setup a new server on the weekend with Ubuntu 8.10 beta, and Dovecot 1.1.4. Every now and then, the IMAP server dies, and won't let users authenticate. It happens about once or twice a day. Dovecot WAS running just fine, servicing mail all day long, and then suddenly it won't read the PAM config file, and then it won't let anyone log in until I log in and kill it. Any ideas? My IMAP client is either Thunderbird or Roundcube, if that's relevant.

RFC 5162 [3.1] states that a QRESYNC should return all changes in a SELECT/EXAMINE since the given modseq. After doing one of those selecting works too... Hi there I'd like to change my setup to log the _actual_ IMAP user's login, rather than the UNIX username. My system uses a virtual uid setup with qmail, where the mailboxes are owned by the 'vmail' user and authentication is via checkpassword using user%domain (ie email, just with % instead of @). So dovecot is recording _all_ logins as: imap-login: Login: user=<vmail>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured I have the following log format specified: login_log_format_elements = user=<%u> method=%m rip=%r lip=%l %c I have also tried: login_log_format_elements = user=<%n@%d> method=%m rip=%r lip=%l %c However, this results in a log file entry of: imap-login: Login: user=<vmail@>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured How do I configure dovecot to log the _actual_ username which the client supplies during authentication? Hello, I have a serious problem with dovecot and mbox format. dovecot returns the same UIDL for new messages and as result some MUAs don't retrieve new mail. UIDs returned by UIDL command look like 000000*1c*49006cec And there is a moment when dovecot stops incrementing marked digits. In other words when new message arrive to mbox, UIDL command returns used UID. I'll show with example: 1. Dear All I have a test system where I am trying out 1.1.4 On the old 1.0rc6 (!) system I had edited: src/lib-storage/index/maildir/mail-storage.h to change: #define MAILDIR_FS_SEP ';' #define MAILDIR_FS_SEP_S ";" so I can get some mail folder hierarchy and '.'s in folder names - this all worked perfectly. Under 1.1.4 the MAILDIR_FS_SEP lines are no longer present. What is the current practice for doing what I was doing before ? Many thanks! Thanks Jose, Yes in the advanced options on email clients there is always a place to put the root folder path or (some similar name) and on the old server I used ~/mail/ in all of the email clients (thunderbird, outlook, seamonkey etc) and that worked fine. Doing that on the new dovecot based server produces the effect I've described - a folder called mail visible at the same level as inbox and the other IMAP folders inside that. On the older imapd based server doing the same thing produced a view of inbox with no mail folder ... just the IMAP folders in it displayed at the same level as inbox. Hi, I'm fairly new to Dovecot, migrating from a POP-only system with /var/mail only mailboxes. I'm currently on version 1.0.10 on Solaris 10, but I don't think that's relevant to the question. I'm a little overwhelmed by the number of configuration options at the moment. I took the "standard" mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u setting in dovecot.conf. This mostly works fine, but home dirs are NFS mounted and in the event that an NFS server is down users cannot read their mail. This is the case even for users who only use POP. So, my question is, do folks on this list have good suggestions for optimum ways to deal with this so that users (perhaps only POP users) can read their mail independent of home directories being available? I think I can make something up, but I'd rather take a standard approach if there is one. If this has already been discussed I apologise - just point me to it as I didn't find it. Hello, I have a FreeBSD 7.1 x86 system using dovecot with postfix and a mysql user database. Everything works completely fine, except that on occasion dovecot-deliver fails. When postfix tries to redeliver the message in about 15 minutes, it succeeds. So this isn't a very big problem, just an annoying puzzle. Here's the postfix log. At first, I thought it could be a postfix delivery problem. I have all logging turned on (except for passwords), and I still seem to get nothing. I've attached my dovecot -n output, which doesn't seem to contain the logging I have set up for deliver: log_path = /var/log/delivery.log info_log_path = /var/log/delivery.log mail_debug = yes auth_debug = yes auth_verbose = yes Any clue as to what could be going on here? This issue is peripherally related to the following thread Re: [Dovecot] client certs with godaddy ssl cert This is running on CentOS 5.2 with latest Atrpms for Dovecot as of this weekend. # rpm -qa | grep dovecot dovecot-sieve-1.1.5-8.el5 dovecot-1.1.4-0_81.el5 With assistance from Rainer Frey (Inxmail GmbH), I am able to successfully use client ssl certs for imap access on both my Nokia e61i and Thunderbird 2.0.0.17, problem now is dovecot sasl and postfix smtp authentication. Using the same self created CA that generates and certifies the ssl client certs in Postfix and using Dovecot SASL, I always get client didn't send proper ssl cert when trying to do a tls based smtp connection from either the e61i or tbird. Trying to debug a delivery problem recently (with Postfix) and I realized that Dovecot wasn't logging any of the delivery information. I'm using Postfix to recieve mail, which is passing it on to Dovecot's deliver to actually deliver the emails into the mail boxes. In dovecot.conf, I have: protocol lda { log_path = /var/tmp/dovecot-deliver.log } [root]# dir /var/tmp/ total 2 drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 1024 Oct 22 12:30 . drwxr-xr-x 24 root root 1024 Aug 5 08:03 .. -rw------- 1 vmail vmail 0 Oct 22 12:11 dovecot-deliver.log The log file gets created OK, but then stays at zero size. Using: Postfix 2.3.3 Dovecot 1.1.4 (and previously 1.0.9) Any clues as to how I can have a delivery log?

Hi, We are moving our current IMAP based system to a new one with dovecot All I can get about the current IMAP (imapd) system is: IMAP4rev1 v12.264 dovecot version is: 1.0.rc15 In the existing system I can see IMAP folders that are in ~/mail/ with many mail clients (e.g. Thunderbird, Outlook, Seamonkey and horde). These folders are presented in the client software as being at the same level as the inbox - i.e. not inside the folder "mail" On the new system, horde webmail shows the other folders in ~/mail/ as being at the same level as the inbox. But ... all the other mail clients above now show a folder (directory) called mail with the imap folders inside. Is there some way to set this up so these other mail clients see the imap folders in ~/mail/ as being at the same level as the inbox as we have on the old server? Hi dear All, Currently I'm configuring Dovecot+PostfixAdmin+PostgreSQL on FreeBSD 7 Stable and using Dovecot v1.1.3. I hope I've configured everything. But when I run /usr/local/etc/rc.d/dovecot start then dovecot doesn't seems to running. /var/log/maillog is only showing following. [Dovecot] Permission issues with subscriptions

I am having some permission issues with my setup and I can't see where to make the change in the configuration files. My users can not create folders at all from their email clients nor from the web interface. I have noticed that each time I try to create a folder the subscriptions files permissions are set to 000. If I go back and reset the permissions to rw-r--r-- then everything is fine until I try to add another folder. running dovecot -n produces the following: # 1.0.10: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf listen: [::] login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login verbose_proctitle: yes first_valid_uid: 1000 default_mail_env: maildir:/mnt/hd4/MailBoxes/%d/%n mail_location: maildir:/mnt/hd4/MailBoxes/%d/%n umask: 511 auth default: user: nobody passdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf userdb: driver: prefetch I am guessing that Dovecot is the actual process that is creating the folders on the IMAP server, so where inside the configuration file do I set the permissions for the new folders along with the user and groups? [Dovecot] Proxying pop3 sessions into an imap one.

I know it seems at least unusual. But I would like to know if someone knows a software that can proxy multiple pop3 and imap connections to the same account and use only imap connections to the real server. I need it because I've to deal with two pieces of software that are out of my control: - 1 - A certified mail provider that states something that I would like to know if it's really true, or if it's worth keeping like a funny signature: "multiple imap sessions are possible. When an imap session is active, no pop3 connections are possible on the same account; when no imap connection is active, only one pop3 connection at a time is possible on the same account. This is a limitation of the pop3 protocol." - 2 - A software written to deal with certified mails that supports only pop3 used by many people on the same account, (and the same account is used also by multiple imap mail readers). Hi! I would like to know if there is a plan to fix CVE-2008-4578 bug (ACL vs. "parent/child/child" mailboxes) in 1.0 branch? I've tried to backport patch from 1.1.4 but with no success. Thanks Michal
