[Dovecot] Apple Mail for 10.4/Shadow/SSL -> Problem.

I have recently gotten Dovecot running on my Solaris 5.8 mail server in order to replace UW IMAP. I'm currently testing it out with mail clients popular amongst my users. It's been working very well, with one vital exception. Apple Mail on OS X 10.4 is not completing authentication (I don't think it's even getting that far). All I'm seeing in the syslog for attempts with Apple Mail (for both IMAP and POP3) is a single line per attempt: Jan 29 17:20:01 paradox dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.info] imap-login: Disconnected: rip=X.X.X.X, lip=Y.Y.Y.Y, TLS handshake This is even with verbose for auth and for SSL. I know syslog plays well with mail.warning and mail.debug and mail.notice, so I'm not quite sure what's going on there. Nothing shows up in authlog or messages either. The OS X 10.5 Apple mail client works just fine, as do Thunderbird and even Eudora. There did not seem to be any coverage of this when I googled and went through the dovecot archives, so I'm thinking it might be some weird interaction between that particular client and the SSL/shadow implementation in dovecot (Things work in UW IMAP for the client). [Dovecot] ManageSieve v0.10.0 released for Dovecot 1.1.beta15

Hello Dovecot users, I finally managed to upgrade the ManageSieve implementation to dovecot-1.1. This also resulted in major restructuring of the code. The actual ManageSieve implementation is now available as a separate package and the patch now only contains the changes to the dovecot-1.1 tree that are necessary to use the ManageSieve service. The patch and the new package no longer contain another copy of the CMU Sieve code; the package depends on dovecot-sieve-1.1 for the sieve implementation. Change Log v0.10.0 ------------------- (Changed version scheme from vY to vX.Y.Z) * Upgraded to Dovecot 1.1: - The actual managesieve implementation is now a separate package. The dovecot tree still needs to be patched though to make dovecot recognize the new managesieve service. - Incorporated changes to imap/imap-login into the equivalent managesieve processes. - Removed cmusieve implementation from managesieve sources. It is now linked externally from the dovecot-sieve-1.1 package. - Restructured README.managesieve file into separate README, NEWS, TODO, DESIGN and INSTALL files. * Added support for new libsieve implementation (to be released). This package can be compiled with either the new or the old Sieve implementation (autodetected). If the new Sieve becomes stable, this package will be merged with it to make a single package for Dovecot Sieve support. Hello, I use convert-tool regularly for converting mbox based mail accounts to maildir based mail accounts. Today I tuned my convert script around convert-tool. I'm irritated about the exit codes. Hi, I’d like to extend the mail_log plugin to log the uid and keywords of a mail delivered by LDA. The keywords are set by the sieve plugin. I added a mail_log_save_finish() function hook listed below. [Dovecot] ACLs - what's the state of play?

Greetings - Could someone help me understand what the latest situation id with regard to ACLs and sharing mailboxes, please? Currently we are using Dovecot 1.0.x but will be moving to 1.1 when it comes out of Beta (and hopefully I'll get some time before too long to try building a test setup to play with). So I'm happy to talk only about ACLs and sharing mailboxes in 1.1... We are using Maildir storage format, and separate areas for each of the Control and Index files. We are using real system users with filestore quotas. Currently each user's files and directories are owner by their own uid and gid (but we can change this if need be), and are set to disallow filestore-level access to "group" or "others" (but we can change this too if need be). We need to know (quite urgently) if the following is/will be possible with 1.1: * Can person A have some (a subset) of their folders accessible by others? If so, can this be Read-Only? can it be Read-Write? * Can person A have all of their currently existing folders accessible by others, along with any folders they create in the future? * Is there support for the IMAP ACL extension, enabling users to set and manage access rights themselves from their mail client? * If system username "abc1" has made their top-level folder "Project" accessible by system username "def2", how does def2 actually specify the folder in order to open it? I have rummaged through the archives and Wiki but mostly these still talk about the magical "dovecot-shared" and "dovecot-acl" files, and how these need to be created/maintained by the system administrator. What we're hoping for is the Holy Grail of: * a Manager wanting to give their Secretary read-write (or in some cases read-only) access to some or all of their folders; * a Project Team wanting to access a common set of mail folders; * etc Under the old UW IMAP server you would authenticate as yourself, then specify someone else's folder with something like (the memory is hazy on this now): ~abc1/Project In the Dovecot Wiki I read a lot about namespaces and so on, but can't seem to piece together in my mind what these actually *look* like to the end-user wanting to access someone else's shared mailbox. Nor what can be done by the end-users, and what has to be done by the system administrator. Can anyone offer me advice, please? [Dovecot] Plus sign in usernames: user+domain.com?

I am migrating from a cpanel server that has usernames in the format "user+domain.com". On the new server I am using the format "user.domain.com" and it all works perfectly with dovecot / postfix. Is there any way that I can allow users to login either with the "." or "+" delimiter? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Dovecot version 1.0.rc26. Situation is essentially a forklift upgrade to make more horsepower available for email. Given a new mail store using Postfix and Dovecot (Maildir), is it possible to transfer from the old mail box (running the same config) or will this generate problems with the various indices maintained by Dovecot? I wanted this one to be called v1.1.rc1, but Squat indexes still aren't completely working. My simple tests seem to work OK, but after doing some random appends+searches+expunges with imaptest it's giving too few results when searching. I'm getting a bit tired of fixing the Squat code (although it's nearly done, finally..), so I'll most likely soon copy the current dovecot hg repository to dovecot-1.1 and start adding new features to the main dovecot repository for upcoming v1.2. The new features to be most likely implemented first are: - Mailbox list indexes - Thread indexes - Virtual mailboxes Some of the most important changes in beta15: - If dovecot master kills itself, the error message is now written to a file in base_dir as well as to log file. When Dovecot starts the next time it shows this error message to user and asks to look into error log file. I'm hoping this will reduce "why dovecot exits silently after starting it?" questions. - LDAP: Added tls_* settings for using TLS with OpenLDAP. - POP3-only users shouldn't get dovecot.index.cache files created anymore when quota plugin is used - Fixed/optimized handling pipelined commands - rawlog: added -b parameter to log packet boundaries. - auth: %a and %b were broken

Hi all. Intro: Timo has already done great job providing patch which allows postfix to authenticate directly against dovecot (included in latest postfix sorce code/release). Now I'm looking around for one more thing. I want to use dovecot's user db as source for postfix lookup tables. In particular: virtual_mailbox_maps Main reason is - postfix access rules and fighting against spam. This will allow to look up dovecot dovecot's user-db and check status of user. If user not exist mail is rejected at SMTP protocol level (instead of accepting mail and later getting bounce for dovecot's deliver). Rules I use looks like: smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated, permit_auth_destination, reject Of course I can write simple script which duplicates dovect's user-db information in format usable by postfix's postmap (this is way in all may mail systems works now). What I want is implement lookups directly against dovecot. Such table can be used for postfix virtual deliver too. It seems implement Dovecot authentication protocol for use in postfix table lookup mechanism is relative easy. Also there is no need to patch complete postfix source code. Postfix allow to create pugins (external dynamically loadable libraries) for such task. recent postfix source code already includes such plugins for mysql, ldap etc.. While running dovecot on debian etch using version 1.0.rc15-2etch3, i wonder the following: If i read the config files correctly, dovecot seems to have no equivalent of courier's IMAP_EMPTYTRASH=Trash:7 setting. Therefore, i wrote a script that dives into the user's directories and their maildirs. Hello, I just installed dovecot (1.0.10) to replace UW-IMAP. So far almost everything works. But I need shared folders (mbox format). I hope I've set up everything but when a user subscribes to one of the shared folders a file .subscriptions with perm 600 is created in the parent directory of the shared mailboxes ("namespace public" below). As I understand the docs that file should go to the user's home directory, right? What did I wrong? Thank you in advance. [Dovecot] Thunderbird can't see a maildir named .Inbox (yeah I know, poor name)

I discovered by chance while migrating some user email to dovecot, one of them had a mailbox called "Inbox" and my script migrated it to a Maildir called .Inbox but Thunderbird could not see it at all, even in subscription lists. I tested with my account and it looks like mutt CAN see it. This seems like a client issue so I'll just make my migration script rename anything called Inbox to avoid it, but I thought I would send a note incase anyone else trips on it.

Hello... I have dovecot 1.0.10 running with the sieve plugin and virtual users (LDAP). My webmail is squirrelmail. I want to allow the users to create sieve-scripts via a squirrelmail-plugin. Hi, On my system, I want to provide imap access for some of the users listed in /etc/passwd. The list of users should be provided by me, and should just be a list in a text file. All the userdb options are static (uid, gid, home directory). Unfortunately, I cannot think of a way to configure Dovecot to do this. The closest I get is with: passdb pam {} userdb passwd-file { args = /path/to/passwd-file } However, the passwd-file is now more complex than it really needs to be, as it includes fields for password, uid, gid and home directory as well. Is there some way to handle this? Or am I trying to do something stupid? Thanks! Koen

[Dovecot] Convert plugin question

Hi, Is it possible to change convert plugin, so it would keep old UIDVALIDITY and UIDNEXT after conversion from mbox to Maildir? As far as I can tell, this shouldn't be a big problem as this information already exists in the mbox. Well, at least for mboxes, that have that information. The problem is easy, if UIDVALIDITY changes during conversion, then client has to reload whole mailbox from the server. And this is not easy for users with 5+ Gb of mail. Thanks, FiL

Alright, so I know I need to get sieve installed. Seems fairly easy to make happen. However, in the documentation it tells me to find dovecot-config and supply that directory into the --with-dovecot= configuration option. For some reason I do not have that file on my machine. I have used find / -name 'dovecot-config' to search for it and it is not there. Is it going to be a problem that the file is not on my machine? Thanks, Fred

Hi, I'm setting up dovecot pop3 deamon for a small set of mailbox. I want to be able to set a small set of mailbox simply, so I've used "passdb passwd-file" + virtual mailboxes with "userdb static". My problem is that it seems that postfix accept and create mailbox for every address I post. It is configured to use local delivery through dovecot's deliver. How do I force deliver to retrun an error if the destination is not defined in the passwd-file? The doc said that "userdb static" should do a lookup automatically. But no luke for me. Is it really a deliver problem, or a postfix configuration problem? Any, hint? [Dovecot] High availability strategies?

Anyone here trying any "high availability" strategies for mail servers? (Ralph what do you do?) I am reading up a little on DRBD + OCFS for a master/master setup but this doesn't seem to address how to avoid having a single master proxy process (assuming that we are running on rented equip and don't have ability to shift IP addresses around servers). It appears to be possible to play games with DNS and short expiries, but this causes extra DNS traffic for the general case when we are up and running? We had some bad ram in a server recently and it's the worst possible situation. Server locking up, downtime, but it's not easy to repro and fix... (only happens every few days. Memcheck found nothing...) How could we redesign our setup to be resilient against this? (How does Google or Yahoo do it?) For reference I am using vservers to host dovecot and this is working very nicely and makes it real simple to chuck the config onto another host and test things (upgrades, etc). Highly recommended. Any suggestions (from people who have tried stuff)? Cheers Ed W

Hi, I'm testing dovecot 1.1.beta14 on two debian etch with drbd+ocfs2[active/active], I use qmail+vpopmail(userdb) and three front-end with openbsd 4.2 with dovecot 1.1.beta14 as proxy with passdb sql through vpopmail database. Is posible to add logs into vpopmail.vlog from proxys?, like "update vlog blah blah..." or in other sql database? I tried with post login scripting but I don't recibe any variable. Hello... I'm setting up dovecot (IMAP only) at an ad-agency (Lots of big files attached to mails). I'm wondering... What would you consider to be reasonable mail quota? My concern is, that some client-software will have problems with huge mailboxes. I was going to give everyone 2GB, but some users demand 15GB+. Does dovecot "prefer" mailboxes within a certain size? [Dovecot] NULL for password and proxy fields

In the course of experimenting with getting dovecot proxying to work, I took a guess at two things. These work fine for me, but now I'm wondering if they are "as designed" or just a lucky accident that might stop working in the future. (I'm using dovecot 1.0.rc17, which is the included version in Ubuntu Feisty. (I am aware that some details change in v1.1, and I'm not worried about that right now.) http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy 1. The wiki page says about password forwarding, "Make sure that the authentication succeeds with any given password. You can do this by using empty passwords." I didn't know exactly now to interpret that last part, so I tried returning NULL as the value of the "password" field for proxy cases. That seems to make dovecot skip the password check will forwarding the user-submitted password to the proxy target host. Is that the intent of that part of that wiki page? 2. It looks like any value at all for the "proxy" field in the passdb lookup turns proxying on. The one exception is a value of NULL for "proxy", in which case proxying is not turned on and proxy-related other fields are ignored. Is that how it's intended to work? If someone can give and informend confirmation that this is as-designed, I can add some clarifying remarks on those points on the wiki page. [Dovecot] appending domain based on port

I am looking for a way to append a domain to unqualified user names based on the port that the client connected to. Like this: port 9110 - @test.com port 9111 - @other.com port 9112 - @third.com it looks like auth-default-realm does this, but you can only specify it once for the whole process. I know I could do this by running a separate copy of dovecot attached to each port in question, but I would like to do it all in one process if possible. Other questions I have, if I use the auth-default-realm: 1) does it happen before auth lookup I assume? 2) do I have to define the domain i use here as an auth-realm in addition to default?

I am trying to tell Dovecot deliver to use $mail_location as the location to store mail for system users. From the docs I've read <http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailLocation> I believe this is possible, but mail to my system users always gets delivered to their /home/<USERNAME> homedirectory. The search order is as follows. The search stops upon the first successful lookup. (...) o The user(a)domain.tld address, without address exten- sion, is looked up next. o Finally, the recipient @domain is looked up. --- Basicaly this allows to have separate users assigned addresses like j.doe(a)example.com (first account), j.smith(a)example.com (second account) and at the same time to have a "catch all" anything(a)example.com mailbox (for the administrator e.g.). What do I need it for? To have dovecot-lda working. Why? I want Sieve :) The test data may look as follows: account #1: + mail: j.doe(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.c.doe(a)example.com account #2: + mail: j.smith(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.t.smith(a)example.com account #3 (administrator): + mail: bofh(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: @example.com (means - anything possible) The filter I used is (more or less - for both pass_filter and user_filter): (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=@%d)) Just for testing purposes I've stripped off some irrelevant data (like checking if the account is active), since that made the filter about 140 characters long ;) The trouble is when there're both a "catch all" and a true account that are linked to different accounts. As an example, if I try to send mail to "j.doe(a)example.com" I receive: dovecot: auth(default): ldap(j.doe(a)example.com): Multiple replies found for user Which is of course true, since the filter returns "account #2" and "account #3". What I'd like to get? I'd like to set the filter to: (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)) Where "%u" is expanded to "j.doe(a)example.com" during the first run Then, if dovecot can't find any user that would match this literaly it should retry the search operation, but now with "@example.com" as the "%u". I've tried to fiddle with the filter itself, but I see any reasonable way of doing it. I don't even know if it is possible at all. Could anyone give me a hint? Or maybe it's already on someone's whish list? [Dovecot] Gnus and dovecot time out

Could someone suggest what the solution here is? Dovecot is terminating the connection to Gnus after a certain period of activity. It's my own mail server so no need to worry about "hogging resources". Should/could Dovecot be configured to keep the connection alive, or should Gnus be programmed to automatically reopen the conneection? The current problem that one can not leave an IMAP group if the connection is cut by the server. [Dovecot] Multiple copies of a message

I have a problem and I don't know which part of the mail chain could be causing it, although dovecot does seem to be the most logical source. I get multiple copies of messages to my Inbox. I have just deleted 24 copies of a newsletter from Computer Shopper. The worst example I have seen of this had more than 90 copies. This doesn't happen to any subfolder of Inbox, just Inbox itself. The problem started about 10-14 days ago, on the old mail server (running Mandriva 2007.1). The new server runs CentOS and exhibits the same problem. I'd be interested in any comments, as my efforts to track it down have got nowhere. Anne
