Here's the symptom: Every time I reply to an OCLUG post, Claws-Mail loads the *To* with oclug(a)mailman.oclug.org and the *CC* with oclug(a)penguin.oclug.org. Unless I remember to delete the CC, this makes me double post every time, and must be quite annoying to you all. This happens *only* on OCLUG posts: None of my other mailing lists display this symptom. It's actually weirder than that, because although when I compose the message the preceding is true, by the time I get the two messages back they both say oclug(a)penguin.oclug.org. This happens only with the OCLUG list, no others. I studied the full headers of the two messages when they came back to me, and could discern no difference in the two. [Dovecot] Looking for HOWTO for fc18 with postfix/TLS/imaps

Hi all, Does there already exist a document that outlines the best approach to implement postfix with dovecot? I'd like to set up a Maildir system with TLS clients and SMTP Auth. I don't think I need to require client certs, but want to avoid cleartext passwords. It's unclear to me whether to use 143 with TLS or 993. I've currently set it up using 143 with STARTTLS using normal passwords. Is this correct? Can I use a regular apache web cert to provide an authorized cert and key to use for authentication by the clients? Thanks, Alex

[Dovecot] Best practice for sieve script synchronization

We consider deploying a two server active-active setup with dsync replication for ~2500 users. I was wondering how people handle sieve script synchronization in such setups. We came up with a few options for syncing: 1) rsync/unison ~/sieve every x seconds 2) move sieve dirs to separatate partition and sync with gluster or drbd 3) patch roundcube managesieve sieve plugin to upload to both managesieve servers (only roundcube can access managesieve in our setup) 4) store sieve scripts in mysql and patch roundcube managesieve plugin to directly access the db instead of using managesieve (we tried this, but apparently sieve scripts read from db via dovecot dict can't have more than one line? show stopper due to roundcube sieve plugin needing comments to parse the scripts) 5) wait until Timo/Stephan add additional magic to dsync for sieve scripts as discussed in http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2011-October/061699.html ;-) We are tending towards 1) as this seems simplest and most robust solution but before we re-invent the wheel we'd like to "hear" your thoughts... In general, sieve works fine for me, but "addheader :last ..." from the editheader extension causes a crash when it processes a message. I was able to narrow this down a bit: It only happens if "addheader :last" is the first editheader command executed in a script. If it is preceded by any "deleteheader" or "addheader" without ":last", everything is fine. FTS-searching through a virtual mailbox crashes dovecot-2.1.15 when the FTS backend does not support lookup_multi. src/plugins/fts/fts-api.h says for fts_backend_lookup() that "The arrays in result must be initialized by caller." FTS backends can therefore assume that the arrays are initialized by their caller. However, fts_backend_lookup_multi() does not initialize the per-box arrays before calling the FTS backend’s lookup function. [Dovecot] Public free (libre) mailbox hosting service for everybody!

Hello e-mail software developers and users! I'd like to ask all of you a question. And of course hear relevant opinion. I've been using free software happily for a few years, and I found free/open source alternatives for many popular proprietary tools such as Facebook, Dropbox, Micro$oft Windows & Office, Youtube, Skype and many many others. Some of the alternatives are probably known to some of you, while others are still unknown to many. But I couldn't find a replacement to mailbox hosting. I'm using a Gmail mailbox and I hate it. So many free and open source mail servers and I still use Gmail, a closed-source service (which also probably tracks all my data, including Google searches I do, and uses it for all kinds of statistics and advertising, but that's another issue). So I asked myself, why is there no mailbox hosting service which respects user freedom? I sent an e-mail to the Free Software Foundation, and got a suggestion to ask all of you: do you know any free (libre) mail server out there? If you do, please inform me, and the whole free software community, developers and users. I couldn't find any. If nobody else finds any either, the plan is to start a new server. There are so many server tools and programs, like the ones you use and develop. It's just like hosting a Git repository or videos of pictures for the masses. We can do it with e-mail too. Q: Why don't I start my own personal server? A: I'm a programmer and I can do it - with some effort, but I can. The problem is not me. The problem is that all the non-programmer and non-technical users can't. And they shouldn't. We tech people can, and should, run such servers for everybody. For all users who want their basic freedoms respected. Another question to tech people: I'm not an expert in e-mail software, so I'm not really sure setting up a server is as easy as all other online services we get, such as Diaspora (facebook replacement), MediaGoblin (Youtube replacement), Gitorious (git repo hosting). Is there a technical issue preventing people from running a mail server, or it's just a matter of having enough money to run it, and the necessary technical skills (which many of you probably have). If it's possible, we'll do it. Also, if users had to pay for such a service, it would be okay. I don't mind paying for my free software stack. I'd actually find it a way to contribute back to the people and projects which deserve it. The point is not money; such a service can get funds. The point if FREEDOM.
