Can Dovecot do this automatically when it creates these directories? (/var/mail/apps, /var/mail/apps/domain.com)

[Dovecot] Upgrading a live running dovecot - how?

Hi Guys, This has bitten us twice now. We're running Gentoo and emerge (ie compile) a new version of Dovecot thinking we can finish that then restart Dovecot in our own time. It seems that Dovecot immediately starts to use the newly compiled Dovecot binary and we get version mismatch errors preventing access. Would be good if Dovecot behaved in such a way that it kept on using the old version (held in memory) until it was restarted where it then loaded the new version. Dan

I am trying to debug some core dump problems. I should be able to run imap by itself right? How to fix? # ./imap imap(root): Fatal: setgroups() failed: Too many extra groups I am using latest nightly code.

[Dovecot] How to use deliver to deliver to virtual users

Hi, Ok, here's my setup, each virtual user has a home directory as follows: /virtusers/<v_userid> and per the INBOX directive in the dovecot.conf file I also have a file as follows: /var/mail/<v_userid> Now, I've followed the directions as outlined here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sendmail But every time I send mail to one of my virtual users, I get this message The original message was received at Sat, 5 Jan 2008 14:22:51 -0700 (MST) from wa-out-1112.google.com [209.85.146.183] ----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- /var/mail/jdunkin (reason: Can't create output) (expanded from: <jdunkin(a)whitneybaptist.org>) ----- Transcript of session follows ----- 550 5.0.0 /var/mail/jdunkin... [Dovecot] help using sendmail LDA

I am stuck. I get nothing in the logs (about deliver). Sendmail complains about "User unknown". I am not sure I have my sendmail.mc configured right, can someone confirm or give me some sample config files that make use of Dovecot+LDAP and sendmail LDA? Dovecot is running as root. I am a little confused, so the auth-master is not even needed? Whenever I try to access an e-mail in the middle (rather than at the end) of the mailbox, my mail-client (KMail) gets an error a message like this is logged in the maillog: IMAP(mi): FETCH for mailbox INBOX UID 39641 got too little data: 4823 vs 4825 IMAP(mi): Disconnected: Disconnected The actual numbers vary, but it is always X vs X+2 The problem started when I upgraded to 1.0.8. Unfortunately, it is still here with 1.0.9. The mailbox in question is the standard Unix mbox (/var/mail/mi in my case). The server runs FreeBSD/amd64. Please, advise. Thanks! -mi

What is correct way to backup dovecot store? Is am I right what is just enough to copy all maildir and my configuration. So in case failure I can just prepare new machine copy config, maildirs and I'm good to go with this.

[Dovecot] Optimizing POP3 performance?

Hello, I recently migrated to Dovecot from Courier-IMAP and i'm very happy with the IMAP Performance and Dovecot in general. The server is running qmail-ldap and i'm still using the qmail pop3 daemon for the POP3 users. Because i want to get rid of qmail completely (switching to exim) i just tried to replace the qmail pop3 daemon with dovecot too. Immediately after the migration the server became basically unusable because of the high I/O Load caused by the dovecot pop3 daemon. I did some debugging and it looks like dovecot opens every old mail in a users maildir and wants to create it's index files etc. I tried running dovecot pop3 with and without "in memory" indexes but this didn't change anything. Is it possible to disable the indexing of the old e-mails completly for pop3? I understand that dovecot is primarily an IMAP Server but i didn't expect the POP3 Performance to be that bad compared to the qmail pop3 daemon (which is very very basic i have to admit). Is there anything i may have overlooked which helps with the POP3 Performance, any patches that disable the unnecessary indexing etc.? If not, what do you guys recommend and use as a pop3 daemon that is fast and stable? I'm using dovecot 1.0.2 (i checked the ChangeLog, doesn't look like upgrading would give better pop3 performance?) and the relevant pop3-config is: mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=MEMORY mail_debug: yes dotlock_use_excl: yes maildir_copy_with_hardlinks: yes mail_executable: /usr/local/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir: /usr/local/dovecot/lib/dovecot/pop3 pop3_enable_last: yes pop3_uidl_format: %f pop3_client_workarounds: outlook-no-nuls oe-ns-eoh Any hint in the right direction is greatly appreciated Regards, Sebastian Faerber

Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.0.5-1 (debian stable) and I'm trying to build a virtual host machine with ldap. In my dovecot-ldap.conf thats what I have: uris = ldap://<ldapserver>/ dn = cn=Manager, dc=domain, dc=com, dc=br dnpass = <ultra secret passwd> sasl_bind = no tls = no ldap_version = 3 base = ou=Users, dc=domain, dc=com, dc=br deref = never scope = subtree user_attrs = homeDirectory=homeDirectory user_filter = (&(mail=%u)) pass_attrs = mail=user,userPassword=password pass_filter = (&(mail=%u)) default_pass_scheme = CRYPT user_global_uid = 107 user_global_gid = 109 But I don't want to read homeDirectory from LDAP, so I have the following in dovecot.conf mail_location = maildir:/var/virtual/%d/%n/ The question is when I try to log into imap I receive the following error: dovecot: 2008-01-03 10:03:55 Error: IMAP(magalhaes(a)fmcs.com.br): mkdir(/HOME_DIRECTORY_USED_BUT_NOT_GIVEN_BY_USERDB/expunged/cur) failed: Permission denied dovecot: 2008-01-03 10:03:55 Error: IMAP(magalhaes(a)fmcs.com.br): mkdir(/HOME_DIRECTORY_USED_BUT_NOT_GIVEN_BY_USERDB/deleted/cur) failed: Permission denied dovecot: 2008-01-03 10:03:55 Error: IMAP(magalhaes(a)fmcs.com.br): mkdir(/HOME_DIRECTORY_USED_BUT_NOT_GIVEN_BY_USERDB/deleted/expunged/cur) failed: Permission denied (I'm using lazy_expunge too) I can log in and etc, but this is strange for me, why do I receive this Permission denied message? The directory /var/virtual/<domain>/<user>/ is owned by uid 107 and gid 109, so, i believe thats ok. My homedir in ldap is /home/samba/<user> , so I changed tried to chown 107:109 too but I still get this error. Is there a way for me to know what is the full path that dovecot is trying to use? HOME_DIRECTORY_USED_BUT_NOT_GIVEN_BY_USERDB is no helping me too much! [Dovecot] Compile error introduced in b13 (Solaris 10)

Any news on the b13 compile issue on Solaris 10 (both Sparc and X86)? Would be nice to know whether it's our own headache or something thats not supposed to be and thus expected to be fixed in the next release. Just to be clear this didn't occur in any other release (I've compiled all previous v1.1 betas on the same setup including b12).
