FYI - I just had a great interaction with the developer of this software. LogicMail for Blackberry is a true IMAP/POP client for Blackberry, which wasn't working correctly with Dovecot's IMAP. I merely posted in the sourceforge forums and got a VERY fast response with a working fix. http://logicmail.sourceforge.net/ Unfortunately I'm not a Blackberry user, but I know IMAP clients are hard to find. So I can't comment on it's usability or features, but I thought I'd give it a little press for his quick response :) Rick

They are now also installed to $sysconfdir with "make install". + When copying/syncing a lot of mails, send "* OK Hang in there" replies to client every 15 seconds so it doesn't just timeout the connection. + Added idxview and logview utilities to examine Dovecot's index files + passdb passwd and shadow support blocking=yes setting now also + mbox: If mbox file changes unexpectedly while we're writing to it, log an error. + deliver: Ignore -m "" parameter to make calling it easier. + deliver: Added new -n parameter to disable autocreating mailboxes. It affects both -m parameter and Sieve plugin's fileinto action - mbox: Using ~/ in the mail root directory caused a ~ directory to be created (instead of expanding it to home directory) - auth cache: If unknown user was found from cache, we didn't properly return "unknown user" status, which could have caused problems in deliver. - mbox: Fixed "UID inserted in the middle of mailbox" in some conditions with broken X-UID headers - Index view syncing fixes - rc27 didn't compile with some non-GCC compilers - vpopmail support didn't compile in rc27 - NFS check with chrooting broke home direcotry for the first login - deliver: If user lookup returned "unknown user", it logged "BUG: Unexpected input" - convert plugin didn't convert INBOX

[Dovecot] Fatal: Login process must not run as root

Hi all, I am new to dovecot, i had installed dovecot in RH9 machine and when i tried to run( as root) it, i am getting the below message in the log file. dovecot: Jun 11 18:57:16 Fatal: Login process must not run as root I have done the installation as below ( as normal user): ./configure make sude make install When i try to run as a normal user i am getting the error like Error: Can't write to log directory /var/log: Permission denied Can anybody tell me where i am doing mistake ? [Dovecot] Public Namespace and ACLs with pure virtual users

hi! i would appreciate to have some comments on my below scenario: # from the config userdb static { args = uid=vmail gid=mail home=/vmail/%d/%n } namespace public { separator = / prefix = All/ location = maildir:/vmail/%d/all/Maildir:CONTROL=~/Maildir/control/ all:INDEX=~/Maildir/index/all inbox = no hidden = no } namespace private { separator = / prefix = location = maildir:~/Maildir inbox = yes hidden = no } # end config the public namespace is also the maildir of the user "all@mydomain". a sieve skript is dropping mail for all@mydomain to the appropriate maildir within this maildir/namespace (e.g. .Support/) first of all: this works to some point but is such a configuration valid? can a public namespace be the maildir of a user? if a new mail for all@mydomain comes in, all subscribed users (of this domain) can view it and it is marked as /Seen individually. the important feature to me: the /Seen flags are managed per user as configured in the public namespace now the problem: the whole mail system runs with one uid/gid and virtual users, which has the effect that some user can delete mails in the public namespace or drop mails into it, create folders etc. this is not wanted. i wanted a read-only public namespace. so i decided to use acls. as namespace prefixes are ignored i needed to create them globally. my first try was: /etc/dovecot/acls/Support: owner lrwstiekxa authenticated lr which lead to the result that other users than all@mydomain cannot manipulate the public namespace at all, including setting their /Seen flag. that was the first surprise to me as i thought this flag would be managed seperately in the users homes. after a (very short) thought i came to this (allow setting the /Seen flag for others): owner lrwstiekxa authenticated lrs which lead to another unexpected result: the /Seen flag is now set globally. if one user marks a mail /Seen, it is /Seen for all other users too. where is the problem? except for the iso/osi layer 8 problem i am aware of... marc

[Dovecot] set maildir and directory default for deliver?

I asked this question in a more detailed post, with no response, so I'm going to ask point blank. Is there a way make dovecot's deliver use default mailbox and directory settings? I'm thinking of the mail_location parameter, which deliver seems to ignore. Thanks! -- Mark Edwards

[Dovecot] APPEND fails

hi list, i wrote a small tool in java which transfers all mails from one imap-server account to another imap-server account using the javax.mail API. when i use cyrus as source and destination imap server everything is fine. when i use dovecot as destination server occasionally exceptions occur when appending the mails. i was not able to see what's really going wrong so i used wireshark to get the imap command that fails: A23 APPEND INBOX.MYSUBFOLDER () "14-Mar-2007 14:20:45 +0100" {0+} A23 NO Append aborted. this is easy to check via telnet, always the same error. i'm not sure why the javax.mail API uses the "{0+}" but somehow it occurs every now and then. sending this command to a cyrus imap server does not fail. any idea? is this a javax.mail problem? thanks and best regards, dirk

[Dovecot] Setting retention policies

I access e-mail from different PCs, typically using Thunderbird e-mail client. Thunderbird has a a "retention policy" it can set on a folder by folder basis. Policies such as how long to keep messages for, or how many messages to keep. Is there a way to set those policies on the server itself? Thank you
