[Dovecot] Chrooting question

Hi, All. I've got a feeling it's a simple matter and it was discussed on this list (i've searched the archive) but still all answers i've found didn't solve this problem. We want to move from UW-IMAP to dovecot, when users INBOX is /var/mail/USER_NAME and his folders are ~USER_NAME/mail/. In addition the host is an FTP server that uses chrooting in order to prevent users from accessing files outside their home directories. Our /etc/passwd line looks like this: some_user:x:1234:123:Some User:/home/./some_user:/bin/shell When i try to check mail on this host with this user i receive the following error message: Dec 1 08:21:11 server dovecot: [ID 935345 mail.error] Invalid chroot directory '/home' (user some_user) (see valid_chroot_dirs in config file) After which comes a line with: "Internal login failure" I've tried to configure different chroot options in configuration file, but had no luck at all. Of course when i remove the "." from passwd line everything works great (except FTP:). I'm using 1.0 alpha 4 on Solaris 9. Please let me know if you have such setup and what is the exact setting i need to add to configuration. Thanks in Advance, Greg

[Dovecot] dovecot 1.0.alpha4 hangs at auth

I'm using dovecot 1.0.alpha4 on a freebsd 5.3 i386 system. Dovecot is configured to use mysql authentication and I'm running mysql 5.0.15 . Everything works fine, but after a period of inactivity (20-30 minutes ) when I connect and try to authenticate it just hangs. Why is the auth worker exiting if it reads 0 from fd=4 ? is it possible to make it so that it does not exit ? and in the case it exits is there a mechanism to restart it? Another question would be why read(4, "", 478) returns 0 ? this means that the server closed connection right ? why would the auth server close the connection with the auth worker ? I had a similar problem with dovecot 0.99 but there I got a "login failed" error message immediately , with 1.0alpha4 it just hangs. I also used a nightly cvs snapshot and the problem is there too. [Dovecot] Graceful shutdown

Hello all, I am running Dovecot v1alpha4 on Fedora 4 from the command line (as opposed to deamon). Is there a recommended way to shut it down gracefully? Or do I just use killall -9 dovecot? I'm not using the included version, so I can't do SERVICE DOVECOT STOP. Thanks, Cliff

[Dovecot] Problem with openldap+nscd+dovecot

Hi, I'm having a problem with this setup: RHEL4 U4.2(Centos) + openldap + nscd The problem I see is that for some reason, after a couple of hours dovecot stuck in the auth procress. I do a : telnet localhost imap Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK dovecot ready. 1 login user pass (here is the delay) After passing a username/password, the process is like stuck for some reason. I have to killall dovecot processes and do a: service dovecot restart and it work again. I have 1.5GB left on the disk and this problem just appeared now after month of working correctly. Could it be the disk space? How can I debug the problem? Should I migrate de 1.0alpha4? Does alpha4 have a new code in the authentication phase? [Dovecot] Not an IMAP4 Server?

I've been testing alpha4, and every once in a while my client (Thunderbird 1.5 RC1) tells me the dovecot isn't a valid IMAP4 server. This is usually (maybe always) when I first bring up the client up. If I just ask the client to get the mail again, it does so happily (without any errors). I must say I found dovecot as a pleasant surprise. We have been using UW. Which didn't scale well. I was considering going to cyrus, but dovecot seems to have given much (if not all) of performance improvements without all the hassle of conventing all the existing mbox mail to maildir. Thanks for your reply, I know that smtp auth is far better from pop-before-smtp but I have to replace a qpopper daemon and not ask any change from client site (they are thousands ...) So I must do the kind of setting I described. [Dovecot] authentication failure messages in log

Hi I'm using Dovecot 1.0.stable branch on a production Fedora Core 3 server. All is running very well other than I getting tons of these messages in the log (/var/log/messages): Nov 26 13:38:56 bmw unix_chkpwd[19360]: password check failed for user (xxxx) Nov 26 13:38:56 bmw imap(pam_unix)[19359]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost=x.x.x.x user=xxxx However the sessions are authenticating correctly and the user is able to down load the mail fine. I have tested this. I send mail to an account then login and download the mail correctly, however my session gets the above in the messages log. Each log on to dovecot get ones of these messages in the log. It making the log file large. Any idea on what it is? Regards Daniel -- "Unix is simple. Hi, I'm trying to set up dovecot-stable (http://www.dovecot.org/nightly/stable/dovecot-stable-20051124.tar.gz) All seems to be prepared correctly, but... my dovecot can not access the mysql database :( Connection string goes like this (i tried changing the order of parameters, that's why password is the first in the line): connect = password=***** host=/var/lib/mysql/system/mysql.sock dbname=vmail user=vmail But - in dovecot log I see: dovecot: Nov 24 23:53:05 Error: auth(default): mysql: Connect failed to vmail: Access denied for user 'vmail'@'localhost' (using password: TAK) Same in mysql log: 051124 23:53:05 171 Connect Access denied for user 'vmail'@'localhost' (using password: TAK) All settings in connection string are 100% correct - I have pasted them from dovecot-sql.conf to command-line mysql client and it worked, I have logged in. My copy of dovecot has been compiled recently, so all libraries are correct. Mysql version is 5.0.15 - but I doubt it is the reason... Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!
