[Dovecot] deny=yes in userdb

I would like deliver to reject certain users. Since supposedly deliver only uses userdb, not passwd, I can't use deny=yes for that. Or does userdb support deny=yes? Yes, I should rather reject them right in the MTA, but that currently takes too long to implement. Or how to reject gast* in postfix using nss authentication?

Hi. In order for restoration to work fine, I have to create a folder using the interface (e.g RounCube) which also creates the required structures. Then I copied the emailfile e.g xyz:s to /myrestoredemail/cur/ How do i properly create a folder with its structures(index,etc) without using the RoundCube web inteface ? [Dovecot] disabling mail delivery for a user

How can I disable mail delivery for a user yet still allow access to their mailbox from another account which their mail is shared to? If I put them in a userdb which has "deny = yes" that just disables their ability to login, yes? And they would still have mail delivered. I want to disable their ability to login AND bounce all mail delivered to them, preferably solely through dovecot configuration. I am using lda, obviously, for mail delivery. (I could configure the MTA to reject mail for them if there is no other option.)

So for example if you had: userdb passwd { } You'll now need to use instead: userdb { driver = passwd } 2. Services now have default inet_listeners. You need to either remove your existing ones, or override the defaults by giving the listeners's name like shown in the new example master.conf. For example if you had: service imap-login { inet_listener { port = 1234 .. change it to: service imap-login { inet_listener imap { port = 1234 If you want to disable a default listener, you can set its port to 0. Some new features: - Added auth_verbose_passwords = no|plain|sha1. If authentication fails, this setting logs the used password. If you don't really need to know what the password itself was, but are more interested in knowing if the user is simply trying to use the wrong password every single time or if it's a brute force attack, you can set this to "sha1" and only the SHA1 of the password is logged. That's enough to know if the password is same or different between login attempts. - lazy-expunge: Support a single-namespace configuration. In this setup if mailbox has some expunged messages and then the whole mailbox gets deleted, they get merged into the same deleted mailbox. - protocol !imap { .. } adds configuration to all protocols except imap. - imap/pop3 proxying supports now async DNS lookups for hosts. There's a separate dns-client service doing the lookups using OS's own blocking resolver. - dovecot-config file changed in a way that it'll be easier to create external software linking against dovecot libraries. This made Pigeonhole's configure script a lot simpler. And of course there have been lots of fixes.

[Dovecot] proxy_maybe regex

Does anyone know if dovecot support regex lookups for proxy/proxy_maybe, rather than mysql/ldap etc? I've been comparing it with perdition to see which one might be better for us to do layer7 username switching. Perdition supports the ability to not have any auth/db looks, but rather just a regex file that parses the usernames as they come in and forwards to the particular machine on the same port. For example: username:host ^[a-d]: 192.168.xxx.1 ^[e-k]: 192.168.xxx.2 and so on... I didn't think this was supported in dovecot, but I wanted to check first. I think this is going to end up being what we use to avoid NFS problems. We are testing with 1.2.9 and have found that with mail_full_filesystem_access set to 'yes', we cannot force indexes for folders under ~/mail to be stored in /var/dovecot/indexes/%u. /var/dovecot/indexes/%u/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index* is created just fine, but everything else ends up in ~mail/.imap. I have been diligently reading about namespace in the DC doc and what I can find in Google. Like the blind men and the elephant, I see the nature of some individual bits of namespace, some syntax and the overall purpose (overriding defaults and providing extensions), but I don't see the whole thing and how it is used. I am looking to do some maildir testing in what is a mbox default system, so I thought to employ namespace to do so. I see that namespace(s) can be defined in dovecot.conf and I see that it can be defined in TBird (under ServerSettings, Advanced Account Settings), but it isn't clear to me how they are made to work together. Hello, i'm trying to do some delivery notification for each incoming address. Problem is that sieve vacation has :days but minimum value is 1 eg period in which addresses are kept and are not responded to - but that is not that i want. Is there other extension (in devel ???) or some other way (lda using procmail or maildrop) how to implement my request ? (Before migration we used qmail + procmail). The cryptic subject is the outcome of my looking into how to do a particular thing. I wonder if anyone else has solved this problem in a way that hasn't occurred to me. I'm using dovecot 1.1.11 on Ubuntu Server 9.10. I could consider upgrading to my own install of a newer dovecot if it made a difference to this problem. I have two populations of dovecot users. Some users have Unix accounts (with logins disabled), and so their password hashes are stored in /etc/shadow. These days, the default configuration for that is salted SHA-512. It's easy for me to change that scheme to something else if I want to, but the important fact is that I already have some users with passwords in salted SHA-512. The other population of users is purely virtual, and their password hashes are stored in a MySQL database in SHA-1 format (unsalted, but moving to salted wouldn't be a big deal). The database also has a column identifying the hash scheme, so SHA-1 isn't some assumption. I know that I have have multiple passdb in my dovecot config, but I'm looking to unify my two user populations and put them all in the MySQL database. As far as I can tell from the wiki, there is no SHA-512 in any version of dovecot. MySQL also doesn't have SHA-512. So, I don't see a way of reworking my password checking to accomodate the salted SHA-512 values currently in /etc/shadow. I'd prefer to not ask the SHA-512 users to update their passwords for this administrative reason if I can avoid it (but so far, that looks like the only answer). Any ideas?

Hopefully this isnt TOO general of a question. I have a raid server that runs dovecot and exports via nfs the maildir format store. I have 4 mail servers running exim that use dovecot to deliver over nfs I have been examing our entire setup and had the thought, would it be recommended to instead have another exim process running directly on the raid server and have my mail servers deliver mail to that rather than over nfs, if that makes sense? So mail would go from our postini frontend => mail cluster => final delivery via exim on raid server. Seems like this way I could make all the nfs config options go away and such. Thoughts?

[Dovecot] Pigeon hole sieve binaries and dovecot header install

Stephan, I've recently been playing around with packaging dovecot 2.0 and dovecot-2.0-pigeonhole, as well as the --enable-header-install configure options of both. This lead me to the following question. Should pigeonhole's sieve binaries rely on static libstorage / other dovecot libraries? It seems like they should instead use shared libraries, but I couldn't find a configure option to make this happen. That way, I could break my packages up like so: dovecot dovecot-devel libdovecot dovecot-pigeonhole dovecot-pigeonhole-devel And while pigeonhole/sieve might require libdovecot to run, it shouldn't require it to compile. Thoughts? I can provide a lot more detail about my compilation errors if you think its necessary.

Hi, though I am not sure this is the right place to ask, but I just try. I am looking for a better e-mail hoster providing me with a dovecot server (I don't want to do all the admin stuff and backup myself, if possible). I already googled a bit, searched the archives and had a look at dovecot.org but could not find an answer to this question. I was following some of the information on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PostfixVirtualMailBoxClamSmtpHowto#Testing Your Setup I created the in this format: user:{plain}pass:1000:1000::/home/user::userdb_mail=maildir:~/Maildir for userdb passwd-file. I used smart for the user and wade for the password (its just for testing) and then attempted to log into the system. Im getting these errors: auth-worker(default): pam(smart,127.0.1.1): lookup service=dovecot auth-worker(default): pam(smart,127.0.1.1): #1/1 style=1 msg=Password; auth-worker(default): pam(smart,127.0.1.1): pam_authenticate() failed: Authentication failure( password mismatch?) auth-worker(default): passwd-file /etc/dovecot/passwd.dovecot: Read 1 users auth-worker(default): passwd-file(smart,127.0.1.1): lookup: user=smart file=/etc/dovecot/passwd.dovecot Its reading the file but the password is incorrect. From nmap: 995/tcp open ssl/pop3 Dovecot pop3d |_ sslv2: server still supports SSLv2 |_ pop3-capabilities: USER CAPA UIDL PIPELINING RESP-CODES TOP SASL(PLAIN LOGIN) pop3 allows SSLv2, imap doesn't. In my dovecot.conf I have: ssl_cipher_list = ALL:!LOW:!SSLv2 at the global level. Do I need to put it inside the protocol pop3{} section? Patrick

Hello all, successfully managed to make dovecot work with horde (http://www.horde.org) and another MTA (SMTP/POP3). I have this nagging issue with dovecot though (I suspect - it's dovecot and not the rest of the packages, please read on): There is this special page one goes, that check if everything is ok with all the relevant software running along Horde. It's a php file called "test.php". Now, this file shows almost everything that happens in the box. Here's a transcript of what shows when it comes to dovecot and SSL : --------------------------- * Trying protocol imap/ssl, Port 993: ERROR - The server returned the following error message: SECURITY PROBLEM: insecure server advertised AUTH=PLAINCertificate failure for localhost: self signed certificate: /C=GR/ST=Kerkyra/L=Kerkyra/O=The Company Name/OU=IMAP server/CN=webmail.thecompanyname.gr/emailAddress=postmaster(a)webmail.thecompanyname.gr --------------------------- From what I understand, it doesn't like the certificate. However, I've followed a howto document step-by-step and did what is documented. Does anyone have any pointers on how to make secure imap for dovecot ? E.G. on ThunderBird, the settings are the following : Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings : Server Name : (the server or its ip address) Username : (the username) Port : (I've manually entered "993", because by default goes to "143") Security Settings -> Connection Security : SSL/TLS (again manually entered) CHECK_ON : Use secure authentication Now, if I click on "Get Mail" button on top of the TB window, I get a pop-up window with the following message : ------ Server : Location : <Servers' IP Address>:993 Certificate Status : This site attempts to identify itself with invalid information. Wrong Site : Certificate belongs to a different site, which could indicate an identity theft. Unknown Identity : Certificate is not trusted, because it hasn't been verified by a recognized authority. ------ After that, the users accepts the above by pressing ok twice. However, there's a third pop-up window with a message shown below : ------ You cannot log in to <servers' ip address> because you have enabled secure authentication and this serer does not support it. I finally migrated my mails from mbox format to mdbox format using dsync: 1. Stop dovecot, wait a few seconds for processes to die 2. dsync convert mdbox:~/mdbox 3. Change mail_location to mdbox:~/mdbox 4. Check that no new mails arrived during conversion (alternatively I could have just run dsync again, but I decided not to test my luck) 5. Start dovecot After fixing a pretty bad bug in dsync and a couple of other unrelated bugs, everything seemed to work correctly and transparently. UIDs and everything was preserved as expected. I think I even feel my mail clients being faster than with mbox :) ~% du --exclude=.imap -bsh mail-old-mbox 707M mail-old-mbox ~% du -bsh mdbox/* 27M mdbox/mailboxes 704M mdbox/storage The reason why I'm giving -b is because without it, mdbox was a lot larger than mbox (734 MB vs. 710 MB). when i try to run dovecot for SASL support only, with literally just this configuration: protocols = none ssl = no auth default { mechanisms = plain login passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot/passwd } socket listen { client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 } } } I get this: Error: ssl_cert_file: Can't use /etc/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem: No such file or directory Since, in this configuration, SSL doesn't have meaning, dovecot shouldn't be looking for any cert file. Easily fixed with "ssl = no" but that shouldn't be required. -frank

[Dovecot] mailbox format w/ separate headers/data

In the future, it would be cool if there were a mailbox format (dbox2?) where mail headers and each mime part were stored in separate files. This would enable the zfs dedup feature to be used to maximum benefit. In the zfs filesystem, there is a dedup feature which stores only 1 copy of duplicate blocks. In a normal mail file, the headers will be different for each recipient and the chances of the content of the message being able to be dedup'd are close to zero, because the differences in header length changes the block boundaries for the rest of the message. But if each mime part is stored in a separate file, you get massive compression "for free". -frank

[Dovecot] Courier-to-Dovecot-migration: Outlook downloads all Mails again

Hi everybody, I'm currently playing through the migration from Courier to dovecot. I've converted the User's Maildir with 'courier-dovecot-migrate.pl'. Outlook 2003 is configured to access the Mailbox via POP3, the option "Leave a copy of messages on the server" is activated. But: after the migration Outlook 2000 redownloads all mails again :-( Could it be, that Outlook 2000 "thinks" (after changing the POP3/SMTP-Server in the Outlook configuration pointing to my testsystem) this is a new system and starts to download the messages again? If so, Outlook 2000 won't download all messages again if we do the migration because POP3/SMTP-Server remains the same. Can anybody confirm this? We do not experience this issue with Thunderbird for example. Thank you, Werner

Hello List, we use in our system cryptical Usernames for dovecot etc. and authenticate users against shadow/passwd User abcde is loging in and gets data from /var/spool/mail/abcde and /home/popuser/abcde Now we want to make it possible that users can log in also with emailadresses. I tried dovecot-mysql authentication which works fine but i do not find a way to use 2 different login-formats in my queries. login with abcde and also testname(a)example.com should return ok and lead to /var/spool/mail/abcde. Is this possible or i have to make a decision which format to use? Thanks, Andre

[Dovecot] virtual mailbox / INTHREAD use case, issues, questions

For over a year now, I've been trying to acquire the ability to review the thread history of a message in my INBOX while still deleting messages as soon as I believe I'm done with them. Suddenly I'm gratified to see that several approaches have been right under my nose all along! One is the INTHREAD imap extension, which I see is implemented by dovecot. Another (related) is dovecot's virtual folders. When I saw the GMail-style "conversation view" described at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Virtual I was elated, so I tried it out, with exactly that configuration (almost -- my separator is '.'). I ran into several problems (using Dovecot 1.2.8 with http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.2/rev/9cccb8617820 applied): 1. I had to manually create the virtual folder for all my users or they couldn't access their mail at all. Is this fixed in 2.0? 2. My users were getting errors when accessing via POP3. The possible meaning of such a virtual folder under POP3 is lost on me, but I had to enable the virtual plugin for that protocol too. I think that should at least be in the documentation, or better yet the requirement should that it be enabled for POP3 should be dropped. 3. I couldn't get the virtual "conversation view" inbox to show any messages. But maybe that's because of a possible issue I describe below with x-mailbox 4. At some point I ended up with an empty mailbox called "private.virtual" --- I have no idea how. Probably user error. 5. The "all" virtual mailbox would only show 89 messages. I switched it to be a mirror of my "archive" mailbox and the number started to look more reasonable. This could be the "lots of mailboxes" bug describe in http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot-news/2009-December/000145.html 6. I got the impression that looking at the virtual INBOX didn't cause the "all" mailbox to be updated, which I'd guess that it should be. 7. I tried to create an IMAP search, rather than a virtual folder, that looked for x-mailbox INBOX header like the virtual folder does. It too came up empty. It doesn't exactly surprise me because I don't see an x-mailbox header in any of these messages. In fact, I can't find one in /any/ of my messages. When I look for a description of the x-mailbox header, I don't find much information on where it comes from or what it represents. http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2009-June/040619.html seems to indicate it's synthesized by the server. If it's really supposed to represent the message's "original" mailbox as implied by http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Virtual then I'm not sure what that means for messages that are filed twice by sieve and never moved. Lastly, I want to report that for me, the speed of these IMAP searches doesn't begin to approach what I can do with mairix if I want a message's entire thread. I'm happy to use mairix, although it would be nicer not to duplicate that capability if it's already in the server. But it needs to be fast. Is there something I can do to make it go faster? [Dovecot] STATUS command and total/read message count

Hello, I'm running Dovecot 1.0.15 with Thunderbird 3.0.1. TB can query folders for messages in two ways: Either by using the STATUS command, or by opening the folder (don't know the respective IMAP commands, sorry...). Querying via opening the folder is reliable, but via the STATUS command, only new/unread messages are shown. If I want to have the total number of (unread) mesages in a folder, I have to manually open it, so the headers are loaded. Is this a Dovecot issue, or a problem with Thunderbird? In other words: Does the STATUS command only return new/unread messages, or can this be configured on the server side? Thanks, Florian

Hello Everyone... Some time ago, i send some questions about plugins and concat 2 file handles. So, there is another questions about this. Timo Sirainen send to me this modification, in src/lib-storage/index/maildir/maildir-mail.c struct istream *full_input[3]; full_input[0] = i_stream_create_fd(fd, 0, TRUE); full_input[1] = i_stream_create_fd(fd1, 0, TRUE); full_input[2] = NULL; input = i_stream_create_concat(full_ input); This is necessary because my Header and Body is splited. This modification works fine. My question is: There is a way to do this with a plugin ? I dont know how to implement this in a plugin, because i dont know what is the hook to change the maildir_open_mail functions. (this is the function with the modification above) . Another question is: There is a seek function, in dovecot, and in zlib plugin, it is rewrite by another function, that use the "gzseek" to do the seek. My splited body will be encrypted, and the crypto no have seek, because the message will be encrypted. (if i open the message, decrypt and seek to some position, maybe work). The seek function is really necessary to IMAP and maildir ?

Hi all, i just investigated a user complaint and found a read-only dovecot-uidlist. Since dovecot couldnt write it, the process failed. Users can not reach this file, so how this became readonly is beyond me. Must be something in dovecot. Maybe an older bug? I need advise regarding restore of the INBOX & SENT files from the backup. For e.g , [1] Can I just copy "file-x-y-z" from /Maildir/cur to restore it on /Maildir/cur on the mailserver. [2] Can I do same for SENT emails ? I have tried the imap_acl plugin with 1.2.9 today, but was not able to limit acl changes for those mailboxes where acl changes should be forbidden. http://wiki.dovecot.org/ACL says that "a" or "admin" covers "Administration rights to the mailbox". However, removing "a" from owner acl (using "lr") does not help, the user can still change all acl flags for all users with imap. Write accesses to mails are forbidden as they should. Is this intended or a bug? We would like to give all users the ability to use ACLs through IMAP, but the current behaviour endangers our read-only mail archives. Hello Dovecot users, It's been a while since the last Pigeonhole Sieve and ManageSieve releases. That is why this release includes quite a few changes. Most interestingly, the include extension is updated to match the most recent specification, the Sieve interpreter now includes plugin support and ManageSieve now has support for enforcing quota on the size of scripts, the number of scripts and the space the scripts occupy on disk. Other than that, quite a few small bugs were fixed. One of which was in the i;ascii-numeric comparator. If one of the matched strings did not start with a digit, the comparator would always yield a 'less-than' result. In stead it should have considered the string starting with the non-digit character as having a positive infinite value. Elsewhere in this list, Julian Cowley pointed out that negative values also start with a non-digit character, which some people may not have understood (i.e. i;ascii-numeric works only on unsigned values). The bug fix in this release could therefore change result of certain misconceived (and probably spam-related) Sieve rules, so watch out! I started work on the spamtest(plus) and virustest extensions. These are implemented for the most part, but their configurability needs quite a bit more work. [Dovecot] Delete messages with archivemail

Hi, I have set up a dovecot imap server (Version 1.0.15 on Debain Lenny). Until know I used courier. Every night I run a script calling archivemail ( http://archivemail.sourceforge.net/) to delete all messages in the Spam folder that are older than 30 days archivemail deletes the files directly in the Maildir folder. I am not using IMAP for this (cause I don't want to store the passwords in plain text). I know that dovecot uses index files to speed up Maildir access. Will there be any problems with the index files when I delete the old spam like this? Cheers Mario

hi All, I have a srange problem. Before dovecot there was a courier imap and it worked just fine. The client(s) are the same then before, so I think, this is an server side problem. I have a user with Outlook and he uses pop3 and leaves messages on server. Sometimes the messages get downloaded again, when he starts the outlook. Not all, but 7-9 hours back. uidl format is like it's suggested: pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv Any idea, what's wrong and what I can do? Thank you very much, tamas

[Dovecot] strange behaviour with seen/unseen messages in virtual folders.

Hi, I've a virtual folder that contains unseen messages. When I mark the message and expunge the folder, the message should disappear. This works as expected in alpine. Alpine uses the following commands: 06000010 STORE 1 +Flags (\SEEN) 06000020 EXPUNGE Using roundcube mail, the message wont disappear, when I perform the same steps. RoundCube Mails sends: flg UID STORE 445 +FLAGS (\Seen) exp1 EXPUNGE But the message doesn't dissapear. But I can expunge it with alpine, as long as the folder contains one message. If it contains more messages, some or even all messages won't disappear. When I mark them as unseen/seen in alpine, I can expunge them with alpine. The expunge command send by roundcube mail never expunges any seen message in the unseen folder. Whether it was flagged as seen by alpine nor roundcube mail. kind regards, matthias

[Dovecot] Need simplest method for providing alternate mail location

I am looking to migrate my DC V1.2 from mbox to maildir format....and want to do this in stages, user group by user group rather than in one horrendous fell swoop....since I'd rather fell things didn't happen. Since I'm running sendmail/procmail, I can change the ~/.procmailrc to change the writing of the INBOX, but the IMAP mail location access info is knottier when one wants to do things a bit at a time. Setting aside for now the matter of converting existing folders, I will be moving: = from a mbox setup with the INBOX in /var/spool/mail/<userid> and the folders in ~/mail = to both in ~/Maildir (unless someone has better ideas) It seems that one could: 1) Change the namespaces in the client...but this is not feasible, because it would means going out to all my 4000+ users desktop and modifying them. 2) Having some sort of db to tell DC it a mail_userdb extra field and override the mail_location in dovecot.conf 3) Perhaps waiting for DC v2.0 which will have this architected in. A) Is there any sense the v2.0 will be coming Real Soon Now and will fulfill #3? B) What's the simplest way to implement #2? I would really rather not install MySQL on my mail server and have all the overhead of installing and managing it when all I need it for is a temporary resource to tell DC where things are until the switchover is complete and Maildir is the default. Is it feasible to do this with an additional flat file in the /etc/passwd mode with some extra fields tacked on that is *only* used for mail location info? Or some other and simple way? Hello. After updating to TB-3.0 I notice what sometimes messages in IMAP folder lost "seen flag". Entire folder star to be unseen fully. It happen often then I chose(click on it) some folder . [Dovecot] SpamAssassin and i;ascii-numeric comparator

Hi Stephan, I noticed that you changed i;ascii-numeric comparator recently (<http://hg.rename-it.nl/dovecot-1.2-sieve/rev/17fb38aee85f>) to correct a small bug. I have an interest in this because I use the comparator to check for SpamAssassin scores. Before the fix, this was all that was necessary to check for scores above a certain value: header :value "ge" :comparator "i;ascii-numeric" "X-Spam-Score" "5" Since SpamAssassin includes negative scores and the i;ascii-numeric comparator doesn't recognize negative numbers, all negative scores are actually treated as positive infinity after the fix. Of course, this means mail which has a negative score then gets counted as spam. Now an additional test is necessary, something like this: allof(not header :matches "X-Spam-Score" "-*", header :value "ge" :comparator "i;ascii-numeric" "X-Spam-Score" "5") I thought I'd mention this because other people may get affected by this once 0.1.15 comes out. Here is a patch that makes further tests for the comparator between numeric and non-numeric values. Hope you can use it. -=- julian

Hi! I am using Dovecot 1.0.10 with LDA/postfix option reading user data from ldap, but the problem would be nonexistent maildir. Connection with ldap should be fine since reading proper maildir folder. Is it possible to auto creating maildir folders even on received mail since the you can auto create when user login with mail_executable scripts as it's seen from configuration I am doing for pop3 and imap. [Dovecot] Mail process plans: multiple connections in a process + idle processes

Maybe for v2.1: imap and pop3 processes can currently handle multiple connections, but they're assigned pretty much randomly to processes. It would be better if it was possible to: a) Require that a process handles only a specific user's connections b) Require that a process handles only a specific UNIX UID's connections (e.g. if each domain has a separate UID) c) Prefer to put user's connections to same process, but don't require it. To do this, there needs to be a process between imap/pop3-login and imap/pop3. Let's call it imap/pop3-tracker process (or aggregator? or any suggestions?). This process accepts all connections coming from login processes when they've finished authenticating a connection. Internally it figures out if the connection should go to a new or an existing process. It keeps track of username -> { mail_process[], cookie (see idle processes below) } mail_process -> { unix_socket_fd, connection_count } So there's a connection to each mail process. This connection is used to send connection fds for the process to handle. It's also used to receive notifications when a connection is closed. The mail process sockets could also be used to communicate to a specific process. For example doveadm could use this in future to ask what a specific user or process is currently doing, by connecting to imap-tracker, which forwards the request to wanted process(es). The above isn't really anything new, just a more specific plan about what I had been thinking for a long time. A new and more interesting idea is to gather IDLEing imap connections under a few imap-idle processes: When a connection has been IDLEing for a few minutes (or something), and there's no special state in the connection (e.g. CONTEXT=SEARCH searches), the connection could be moved to a separate imap-idle process that simply waits for something to happen. When something does happen, it'll move the connection back to imap process, which restores state and continues. The idea would be to reduce the number of idling imap processes that are wasting memory. The state that needs to be saved and restored is: - selected mailbox name, GUID, UIDVALIDITY (for reliably selecting back the original mailbox, or reliably fail if it's gone) - flag: mailbox is EXAMINEd, not SELECTed - highest seen modseq - UIDs of \Recent messages - SEARCHRES extension: last saved SEARCH result - List of keywords that had been advertised in FLAGS/PERMANENTFLAGS reply to client. Or probably MD5 sum of it would be enough. If MD5 had changed, the list would be re-sent to client. - connection fd - paths that are being monitored with [id]notify/kqueue Connection is moved back when a) new command is received from connection fd, b) one of the monitored files changes. The connections are moved back via imap-tracker process, by sending the saved state along the request. For security there's a per-user security cookie (128 bits of randomness), which is sent to imap processes, and when restoring connection from imap-idle, the request must provide the correct cookie or imap-tracker fails the login. (Normally new post-login imap/pop3 connections can't be created without having authenticated first via dovecot-auth. They verify it.) So when connection comes back, imap process opens the mailbox based on saved information. If this fails for some reason (e.g. mailbox deleted), client gets disconnected. Next Dovecot gets a list of changes to mailbox since the saved modseq, and based on that sends the missing FETCH, EXPUNGE, EXISTS and RECENT events. Again if it somehow fails, the client gets disconnected. At least initially this would only be done for connections that are running IDLE command, because non-IDLE connections are a lot more difficult to restore to their original state. This is mainly because if a message gets expunged, it's still visible to the connection until it issues a command that allows sending EXPUNGE event. To handle that, there would have to be code that allows building a view of mailbox where there are some expunged messages. Also it can be difficult to find out the expunged messages' flags, unless they're also part of the saved state.

I would like to manage it directly rather than have SETACL update it. I see lines which describe a sharing entry (the format of those looks obvious) but also lines with just a '1'. Do I just need to separate entries by lines with just '1' in them? -frank

hi All, I have a problem, which makes me headache. I can't find out, what is the problem. I have a mail szerver, which works just fine as expected, TB move messages to trash folder after I delete it, and they are moved. I have an other server. If I delete a message, it doesn't move to the Trash folder. As deleted_to_trash plugin is installed, if I only mark messages as deleted, they are moved to thee Trash folder and also with Outlook works well. It's like when a messages is deleted from TB, the message get moved to the Trash folder, and it's expunged(?) at the same time. Is it possible? Could you help me? The system is Ubuntu 9.04 with docecot 1.2.5-0~auto+0 from http://xi.rename-it.nl/debian/, but builded by myself for x86_64. Thank you, tamas

[Dovecot] Modifying the underlying maildir externally (webmail, replication)

Hello, I have a setup where there are multiple maildir users, one of them being the pop/imap server itself, the others are for example a maildir capable webmail and message replication. I would like to evaluate Dovecot, but I wonder how would its binary indexes and logs fit into this picture. After running through http://wiki.dovecot.org/IndexFiles I'm not sure how well would Dovecot work with other programs modifying the maildirs (adding, deleting, moving messages, folders etc). The "Main index" section says "The index file is synchronized against mailbox only if the syncing information changes.", where syncing information consists or cur and new directories' timestamps. Does that mean I am safe there? The cache file is hopefully just a cache, so it won't contain information from messages which are inserted or moved by an external program, and I assume Dovecot fetches the message lists and other information from the main index, which seems to be OK. The transaction log is for the main index, so if the latter is OK, the former should be OK too. http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/Maildir talks about MUAs and there nothing scary can be found, except for some temporary conditions, where the changes won't propagate to Dovecot in real time, but it's OK. Are the above right, and can Dovecot use its indexes and caches safely with others using the same maildirs? Thanks,

[Dovecot] Files Moving From /New to /Cur

Using Dovecot 1.2-9 with Maildir and layout=FS. We have our own delivery pushing messages to the /new and then /cur folder eventually. When I have an IMAP client attached, there is apparently some sort of race going on. I believe that Dovecot is moving files from /new to /cur (and renaming them) before our own delivery gets the job done. This is causing a problem for us. Is there a way to disable this in Dovecot? I have the LDA section commented out of the config file..so I don't think that's in play. Bottom line is that I don't want Dovecot to move any files around whether an IMAP client is attached or not (except for handling the IMAP COPY/APPEND). Regards, Tony

[Dovecot] Conditionally use a sieve script with deliver?

I found a post in this list [0], which says sieve scripts can be used to deliver mail as read. However, can it be done somehow conditionally, I mean, with a direct or indirect switch for deliver? For a nonexistent example, it would be simply < | deliver -m path/to/maildir -r > or maybe an environment variable could be exported to deliver sieve and checked there? (Still not sure if sieve can replace maildrop in my case, however, using it with dovecot creates various problems with interoperability; but perhaps I can just add those imap4flags like "\\seen" myself to the message with maildrop and avoid mess with sieve at all?) I've recently started using fetchmail 6.3.9 (with IDLE enabled) to download mail from our ISP (Pair networks). The ISP is running Dovecot 1.1.16. I am unable to get the info about the dovecot config at this time. The IDLE support in fetchmail allows us to deliver mail near instantaneously without the need to poll (which is what we did previously using POP3). However I've noticed an issue where if 2 mails are delivered in quick succession fetchmail will only download the first email, and the second will not download. If I then send in another test email this triggers the download of 2 emails (the original that wasn't downloaded and the test email). Now I'm wondering whether the issue lies with Dovecot (e.g. a timing issue), or is it fetchmail that isn't implementing the IDLE/download properly. I've attached the output of a fetchmail session showing this problem in action (I've added some annotations to this file starting with >>>>>). The sequence of events are: * Start fetchmail with IDLE enabled * Send 2 emails in quick succession. * Dovecot notifies of the new message * Fetchmail downloads the message * Fetchmail initiates a new IDLE * Then nothing more is delivered. :( * I then send another email, which triggers the 2 to download. I don't know enough about IMAP to understand whether the problem lies with Dovecot or Fetchmail. Hopefully an IMAP expert will be able to see from the attached IMAP session. Hello! First, sorry for my English... I'm a newbie with Dovecot and I have some questions, I'm testing Dovecot 1.1.11 in a virtual machine. I wish in the future, migrate this to a real server. Ok, but i need this: 1) A group of users can use IMAP or POP3. 2) The others, only can use POP3. I notice that the nologin parameter for the AUTH command is gone in version 1.1 of Dovecot Authentication Protocol. nologin was added in 1.1, so that authentication client could indicate that there will be no subsequent master requests to retrieve user info. When a user in thunderbird toggles some flags like junk, spam or something similar dovecot appends these flags form a-z to the end of the file in maildir. I have another application that also access the maildirs which gets really upset with these flags and ignore those emails. Are there any other way for dovecot to store these flags to make it compatible with other softwares?

hi.. im running dovecot 1.2.9 and checking against an openldap. i defined in dovecot.conf mail_location = maildir:/mail/%u and now all mails are stored under /mail/my.emal(a)mydomain.com how can i store them in /mail/ldapuid ? these userdb and passdb settings drive me crazy.. looks like ldap is a bigger thing then i thougt :) thx

hi list, I've just registered to the list, so please be tolerant ;) I'm currently in the process of planning the migration from courier to dovecot as POP/IMAP-Server. I'm migration from Courier 0.58 (Debian-Etch-packages) to Dovecot 1.1.13 (Debian Lenny Backport). The conversion of the Mailbox from Courier to Dovecot will be done with "courier-dovecot-migrate.pl"-script[1], which works fine. However after running "courier-dovecot-migrate.pl" the Courier-Files still remain in the Maildir. Can i just delete those Courier-specific-files or does dovecot need them somehow (do you normally get rid of these after conversion)? It's about these files: courierimapacl courierimapsubscribed courierimapuiddb courierpop3dsizelist And those directories: courierimaphieracl courierimaphieracl Can i simply delete those with "find" ? If deliver gets run with a non-root userid like this: < | deliver -m path/to/NEWmaildir >, I wonder, is a connected IMAP MUA automatically notified, that the new message has arrived in the new folder? As I see from some experiments with Thunderbird, it has no problems with immediate notifications of new mail in previously existing folders, however, it has problems with the case of new folder.

dovecot-1.2.9 I have a public folder using ACLs to determine who can access it. namespace public { separator = / prefix = shared/ location = maildir:/var/maildir/shared subscriptions = no } Outlook 2007 can't see any folders except at the top level. It can create them just fine, but can't see them after quit and restart. For example, I can create the folder shared/foo/bar but on restart outlook only sees foo as a folder without subfolders (no + to expand it) and doesn't see bar anymore. In fact I can delete the folder foo in outlook and then BOTH .foo and .foo.bar directories are removed on the server. When you click on foo, the error message in the mail pane is "Cannot display the folder. The folder 'foo' cannot contain items. This is most likely a limitation of your IMAP server. In order to create a folder that can contain items, be sure not to append '/' to its name as you create it." -frank

'afternoon list! I use mysql as userdb, which contains two type of password schemes: DES and MD5-CRYPT. I read there : http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/PasswordSchemes that both are supported by dovecot. Unfortunately, dovecot keeps saying: Not a valid MD5-CRYPT or PLAIN-MD5 password when looking for a user with DES encrypted password. Is dovecot able to recognize password scheme, or do I have to do something else ? I can't add {DES} to DES passwords, as this database is used with many other softwares. Hi Timo, I'm using Debian backports.org dovecot-imapd, 1:1.1.13-2~bpo50+1. I've got two different issues, a reoccurring, seemingly harmless one about "Corrupted index cache file" (boring.txt) and one that went bonkers over the least few days (bt.txt) causing much spamming of the logs. I've made bt.txt stop happening by just rm'ing dovecot.index* : find Maildir/ -type f -name 'dovecot.index*' -print0 | xargs -0r rm ... which I realise may not be the most helpful thing to have done from your point of view. Anyway I just wanted to let you know about both of these. If one or both are already known about or already fixed by a later version of Dovecot, great and sorry for the noise! If not, and you want any more information etc., let me know. Here the proxy server should authenticate the user. If the user is in the list of authenticated users then dovecot will allow to connect to imap.gmail.com. Consider a scenario where a client tries to read his mailbox from imap.gmail.com:993. Client executes the command "mutt -f imaps://imap.gmail.com", the request is first authenticated at the proxy server. If the request is coming from a valid user, dovecot will allow to connect to imap.gmail.com and fetch mails for that user. Can you please help me with the steps to configure the server. How do I get IMAP+POP3 vs. LDA to use different user_query statements? The problem is that the input fields are different. IMAP/POP3 is an email address LDA is a username I have written a long statement to try and cater for both however it still only works 99% of the time, and the remaining 1% fails. The 1% that fails sees the mail being delivered to the wrong mbox. In this particular case the same client owned both mboxes so it was ok, but if this had not been the case things could have gotten real embarrassing. Think of the following: abcwidgets(a)theirdomain.tld mailuser1 mailuser1(a)adomain.tld mailuser2 Now when using the Postfix LDA, email for each address is properly delivered to the specified mbox, however in this case because their is a matching name for the mbox and the email address lefthand content, the compound SQL query returns both results and the LDA will use the first one, which in this case was the wrong one. This is the query used: user_query = \ SELECT mailboxes.username AS user, mailboxes.uid, mailboxes.gid, \ concat('*:storage=',mailquota,'M') AS quota_rule \ FROM mailboxes JOIN accounts ON accounts.username = mailboxes.username \ WHERE ((mailboxes.username = '%n' AND accounts.active='1') || \ (mailboxes.email = '%u' AND mailboxes.active='1' AND accounts.active='1') || \ (mailboxes.email = CONCAT('@','%d') AND mailboxes.active='1' \ AND (SELECT COUNT(email) FROM mailboxes WHERE email='%u') = '0')) which additionally caters for the few catch alls our users have. I think this is a massive oversight in the design of Dovecot to use one query to for 2 separate and distinct processes, that both use different parameters. From what I can tell it seems to assume that a mail system will always use username@domain addresses, and never anything more arbitrary. Has anyone found a way around this? Michael

The folders show up but then trying to access one gets the error that the mailbox doesn't exist. Hi, I've regularly crashes with a certain virtual folder. Erasing the dovecot-index.* files help just for few hours/days. Here are to backtraces: Core was generated by `imap'. [Dovecot] Log the virtual email address and not the local account - dovecot 1.2.2 w/ MySQL

I recently started using dovecot and have it working well but I have one item I haven't been able to find an answer for. I am using MySQL with Dovecot for authentication with my virtual email customers. When the user logs in and checks email a log entry is recorded. Instead of the email address (bob(a)bob.net) being logged it records the local account (vemail101) in the POP3 log. How can I get dovecot to reflect the email address that the customer logged in with instead of the local account? Thx, Bill

Hello, It looks I encoutered a bug or misconfiguration. fts_squat search for subject and body works excellent for English mails. For non-English (in particular, Russian) it works only when query consists of 1 word. Phrases - 2 and more words - always returns nothing. Example: search for "planet" ("планета") returns results, search for "Earth" ("Земля") also returns results, but "planet Earth" ("планета Земля") returns nothing. But there are emails having exact phrase "planet Earth". This problem occurs only for non-English queries, both for search in subject and in email body. I tried web-mail Horde 3.2 and Thunderbird. I turned fts plugin off and it correctly finds phrases with 2 and more russian words! So problem is squat. Is it a bug or known config issue? [Dovecot] virtual namespace question

Hi, I'm wondering if it is possible to create a virtual namespace on a prefix other than "virtual/". My goal is to mix IMAP folders with virtual folders on the same folder level (prefix = ""). mail_location = maildir:/data/mail/%d/%u/ # Virtual namespace private { prefix = separator = / location = virtual:/data/mail/%d/%u/virtual } # Default namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } With this configuration the folders show up on the same level, but I'm unable to subscribe to them. When I change the prefix back to "virtual/" it works, but folders are still gruoped under "virtual". Funny thing is, when I use a prefix something like "vfolder/", the root folder is no longer greyed out in my MUA (TB3), and I get a "Mailbox doesn't exist: vfolder" error msg if I click on it.
