I totally agree with the one of you who mentioned the online documentation and the wiki. I know that it exists and i used it for setting up my mail server, but ... as i said, i am old fashioned and i can better work with books. It's just a personal preferrence. Well, i also know that many developers are still working on dovecot, especially Timo and that always new features, configuration options and so on are added, but ... it's the same with other applications in the community (e.g. postfix, apache, OpenLDAP, samba ....) and for all those applications books are available, and that was the reason, why i asked for a book. And to be honest. When i go thru the documentation part, most of the documents were not changed for at least 6 months. I am sure that between the writing and the publishing of a book new dovecot features will be introduced and not covered in the book. But everyone working with books knows that they can't be up to date, but they are a real good basis for me to start with the fundamentals and then add this information by new data from the web. And guys just to mention one big advantage of a book is, you can read it offline easily!! But there is one thing i want to mention at this point. Even if you agree with me about having a book or not. What i really like is the discussion about and the chance to do so, because dovecot is opensource. And for me this is in the end the result behind the idea of open source. Everyone has the chance to contribute, either by code, by suggestions, by comments ..... And that for me is more important than to have a book or not. Thank you all for your comments. Hi all I am using dovecot at home for privat use and i found a lot of documentation here on the web. But you know, i am an old fashion guy and i like books. Hi, I'm not sure whether the client or the server is at fault (probably the client), but it's clearly a regression for me. I'm using the LCG Profimail (http://lonelycatgames.com/?app=profimail) application for my Symbian smartphone which has quite decent IMAP capabilities. Amongst others it can do IMAP IDLE (which has to be statically enabled in the server settings, so it's not used based on the server capabilities). After upgrading from 1.2.10 to 2.0b3 it does not connect anymore. Hello, Dovecot 1.2.5, centos 5.4. We are using NFS for mail, but indexes are local and on a ramdisk. However I'm getting logs such as: Mar 02 11:47:14 POP3(USERDELETED): Error: Timeout while waiting for lock for transaction log file /ramdisk/indexes/DOMAINDELETED/USERDELETED/.INBOX/dovecot.index.log Our NFS is rather busy, and we having other warnings to that affect, but wouldn't have though we'd get timeouts on a ramdisk. -- Andrew

[Dovecot] dovecot 1.1.6 and outloook express 6 out of sync

Apologies if this has been discussed before. I have dovecot 1.1.6 installed on my qnap NAS. I connect to the imap server using outlook express 6 on my XP sp3 box. I notice, after a time, that what I see in outlook express isn't what is actually on the imap server. For example, in one of my folders, many messages are missing. On another, headers of messages start getting duplicated and the bodies don't always match the headers. If I tell outlook express to clean up and reset... i.e. remove all the headers and bodies so they get downloaded again, then everything appears again... for a little while. Likewise, if I delete all the index files on the server and restart it, all seems well for a bit. Somehow, OE is getting out of sync with the imap server. This same OE client is also talking to other non-dovecot imap servers and I don't see this out-of-sync-ness or corruption at all. I realise this is a vaguely stated problem, but I'm not a imap person and dont yet know how to narrow it down further, nor can I reliably recreate it. Has anybody seen anything like this before? [Dovecot] segfault - (imap|pop3)-login during nessus scan

We've been struggling with a problem for the past couple of days which to this point I've only gotten to be able to boil down to this: 1. Install nessus home edition (less pluggins I assume) 2. run all scans (sequentially or in parallel, doesn't seem to matter) 3. about 3 minutes in /var/log/messages will show segfaults on imap and/or pop3 imap-login[22185]: segfault at 000000000000000c rip 0000003c7de610a2 rsp 00007fffa2342068 error 4 or sometimes... pop3-login[24451]: segfault at 000000000000000c rip 0000003c7de610a2 rsp 00007fff07116968 error 4 I'm having a really hard time getting a core dump and I'm having a really hard time narrowing down the list of nessus tests which cause this. So far, I have repeated this failure in 1.1.19 and 1.1.20 Additionally we've seen something similar on 1.2 and reverted back to 1.1 a year ago. At the time we could not re-produce a test case and finally gave up. Has anyone seen something along these lines? Can anyone recommend how I could narrow this down further so we can find the problem? Hi I want to create a mailbox that no one would be able to delete mails from and disable access to it through pop. I have come up with using ACLs to allow read-only access to users. Is that right approach? Could someone tell me how I can achieve the second objective of disabling pop access to this mailbox only. [Dovecot] any limitations running on a Mac?

I have postfix/dovecot/mysql installed using MacPorts on a quad-core 2.8GHz MacPro running Snow Leopard (10.6.2). I moved the base mail directory to a pair of 10k RPM Raptors that are mirrored (/Volumes/email/) and everything seems to be working fine on an unused domain with very little traffic. I used imapsync to pull everything from the current mailserver to this test server to play with. Our current mailserver's IMAP performance *really* suffers when an IMAP folder exceeds ~500MB or ~5k messages. I've become very tired of being the mailbox police trying to get my 20 users to delete email or divide into smaller mailboxes. Are there folks on the list running postfix/dovecot on similar Mac hardware that can share their experiences? Specifically, are there any limitations (file descriptors, other?) that can impact performance I should be aware of? How does dovecot on the Mac deal with >500GB maildirs? Is there a recommended tool for loading and testing the server? Postal? I have 20 IMAP users, with a total of ~37GB of mail currently. Our setup: -- slackware 11.0, x86_32 -- linux 2.6.31.6 -- dovecot 1.2.10 -- mailbox(not maildir) via NFS storage. Details: 1. Buggy message 1219733 byte size. And most of this size is mail header. 2. [Dovecot] client cert handling not working properly on centos 4.8

Dear List I've successfully installed/configured dovecot 1.2.10 with "require client cert" on centos 5.4 and ubuntu server 9.10 I also need to install on centos 4.8 and after the following the exact same procedure I can only get it working if I commented out ssl_require_client_cert =yes and ssl_username_from_cert = yes from the working config file. This is even after compiling dovecot with openssl 0.9.8l on centos 4.8 If I copy the same "client_ca.crt" from centos 4.8 to centos 5.4 then centos 5.4 does not problem in verifying client cert. That file contain CRL as well as certificate which signs the pkcs12 file installed on the client. I noticed for some reason that I am missing an IMAP folder called 'Symantec' that was under my Inbox. I see all my other folders listed on my mail client except 'Symantec'. When I try and click on the Symantec folder as a sub folder in 'Drafts', I get an error: "The mail server responded:Mailbox doesn't exist: Drafts.Symantec" So why does it show up there and why can't I see it normally with all my other IMAP folders under my Inbox. Hi everyone..... I Build a plugin to concat my body and header splited.... Its have 2 "versions". One is with the body without modifications. The second, is with the body with crypto, and this crypto increase a little the size of email. So, without crypto, works fine, but with crypto i got stuck in some modifications. Because the email is splited, to handle it, i made a copy from istream-concat.c, and in i_stream_concat_read i made this changes. Every place that have the i_stream_get_data i get the index from concat (if is the frist or second stream) and if is the second, (my body) the unsigned char *data is the return from my function. if(cstream->cur_idx == 1){ data = decrypt_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); }else{ data = i_stream_get_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); } In this part, i get the function i_stream_get_data and put in the function too, to get the data in the same way, but i dont return the (_stream->buffer + _stream->skip;), i put this in a unsigned char * too, and work with this variable. The size_r, with the _stream->pos - _stream->skip, i update it, with the new value get from my total length from the decrypted buffer. In resume, every (inside istream_concat_read and istream_concat_read_next ) i_stream_get_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); // (in istream_concat_read is "pos" variable) I change to if(cstream->cur_idx == 1){ data = decrypt_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); //(in istream_concat_read is "pos" variable) }else{ data = i_stream_get_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); //(in istream_concat_read is "pos" variable) } Setting the unsigned char *data, with my decrypted data and the pos or data_size, with the length of buffer data , decrypted. I Think there is Ok with this, and must be work, but i got some errors with this, when the Email is read to get them, the total length read is diferent from the W flag in header name. FETCH [] for mailbox INBOX UID 2 got too little data: 1351 vs 1352 FETCH [] for mailbox INBOX UID 1 got too little data: 1357 vs 1360 FETCH [] for mailbox INBOX UID 3 got too little data: 691 vs 1303 There is some variable or something that i forgot to update with this news values ? Seriously, I just have to ask this question. Why mark via the subject line a message as "OFF LIST" and then send it via the normal list framework. Doing so only insures that the message is actually "ON LIST" irregardless of what nomenclature is used in the subject line. If a message is truly supposed to be "OFF LIST", then why not send it directly to its intended recipient(s)? If, on the other hand, it is meant for general review by the groups members, then why mark it "OFF LIST" to begin with? I am aware of the prefix "OT" used in several forums; however, that is usually only used to thwart the moderator of the forum from banning the message or chastising the OP. Hello, is it possible to use differnent ssl certs for pop3 and imap ? I like to have differnet dnsnames for pop3 an imap services configured at customers clients. I tried to configure ssl_key and ssl_cert inside a <protocol>-login {} section but this failed. Of course I know sslcerts containing multiple dnsnames. But this seemes not a real, clean solution to me. You are conflating UI blocking with network blocking (download), probably because that's how TB does it. IMHO, when you open a mailbox, messages should fill in and be accessible immediately, ie as soon as the headers are downloaded. Beyond a screenful, the client should continue to download headers so that when you do scroll down, there is no delay. This is especially useful when you are on a slow link. You spend SO much time doing nothing, ie reading messages, while the client could be doing work for you, and then when you scroll you have to wait again? Also you have to adjust this behavior if server-side sorting is not available and the user wants something other than message order. If you're worried about "wasting" bandwidth, a valid concern, the client need only prefetch another screenful of messages at a time. If your client is configured to sync message bodies, it should go ahead and do that before you start actually reading them, so that you are not waiting on download. Apple Mail, for one, seems to implement things as I've described. Note I am in now way endorsing Apple Mail as a good IMAP client. -frank

[Dovecot] antispam plugin

First off, I have to say I really like the antispam plugin. I am running a (relatively) new freebsd 8.0 server with postfix/dovecot/dspam/squirrelmail and it works great. Create a SPAM folder and tell the dovecot antispam plugin to use INBOX.SPAM as the spam folder and drag messages from INBOX to the spam folder and they are trained as spam. Here is the problem though: after training dspam for a couple of weeks, I had a couple hundred messages in the SPAM folder, so I selected them and hit the DELETE button and they were gone. Except they weren't. I had forgotten that by default squirrelmail moves deleted messages to a Trash folder under INBOX. So the messages were moved out of the SPAM folder, resulting in them being retrained as ham. Oops :( I then hit the purge link in squirrelmail and the messages were forever gone, so I couldn't rectify my gaffe. I have temporarily reconfigured squirrelmail to delete messages outright rather than save them in the Trash folder, but I don't like that as a long-term solution. What occurred to me is this: the current algorithm is: if message moves from * => SPAM, it is trained as spam, if it moves from SPAM => *, it is trained as ham. It would be nice if you could elaborate on that such that the ham rule was "if message moves from SPAM to X, it is ham" (and in my case, I would defined X as INBOX. Thoughts?

Hi, I'm a long term dovecot user, packager and believer, but on the other side of the wire I've been a mutt user for longer than I can think. Which modern email client under Linux is working best with dovecot? I just did a grep on User-Agent:/X-Mailer: on my dovecot archive (which goes back to 2004) and found that the top ten are: 28% Thunderbird 25% Evolution 9% Apple Mail 9% Mutt 5% Mozilla 3% KMail 2% Outlook 2% SquirrelMail 1% Alpine 1% Mulberry ... So it looks like most Linux people here like to use Thunderbird and Evolution. Hi, I was following the earlier namespaces discussion and I would like to repost a doubt. I need to have some kind of archiving, it means, store old messages into a cheap storage. But I couldn´t think any other solution than symlinks. Then, I thought about store 'Sent Items' (as having old messages and less acessed). But I also needed to do with nfs and symlinks. So, it comes the namespaces discussion and a little brainstorm: 1) Could I have a namespace only with INBOX and the personal folders (drafts, sent items, etc) in another one - and those would be stored in huge sata disks while inbox in 300g sas disks ? 2) Could I maintain the prior configuration, but let the second namespace hidden and having the inbox subfolders (or any specific as sent items) as virtual folder ? I don´t know if this makes sense... 3) Could I have my normal Inbox and a folder (in another disk - ex. huge sata one) storing files older than 30 days and through virtual folders join these messages in a common virtual INBOX while acessing imap or pop3 ? Hello folkz, I'm trying to compile and install Dovecot 1.2.10 from sources. When I execute: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/dovecot make make install I reasonably expect to find dovecot libraries in /usr/local/dovecot/lib but it puts them into /usr/local/dovecot/lib/dovecot. It add this extra 'dovecot' at the end of almost every installation path. Could somebody please clarify what extra configuration parameters should be set to make to change this strange dovecot installation directories layout. Thank you very much in advance, Alex

[Dovecot] body search very slow since upgrade from 1.0.15 to 1.2.10

Did you mislead me Timo? You said search in 1.1+ is faster than 1.0. I'm seeing approximately 20x *slower* search times in 1.2.10. Via Thunderbird, a full body search of my 11,000+ message IMAP folder hosted by 1.0.15 used to take less than 10 seconds. Since upgrading to 1.2.10 the search is taking over 3 minutes, the imap process servicing the client pegging one CPU at 100% for the duration of the search. Here's the mbox file: -rw------- 1 stan stan 50M Feb 23 07:41 1-Spam-l Doing the same search via grep results in a time of: real 0m0.361s user 0m0.204s sys 0m0.140s grep takes less than half a second, yet dovecot 1.2.10 takes 3 minutes for the same search? Actually grep is searching the entire file including headers, so it's doing more work than the imap process. Something is *SERIOUSLY* wrong here. Did I somehow nerfed something in dovecot.conf that's causing this? I deleted all the index files as per the upgrade instructions. Hi, I'm trying to set Dovecot up in a way that is compatible with console usage of the same mailboxes (ie, w/o IMAP). My mailboxen are almost all maildirs (I can ignore all other formats), and are laid out as follows: INBOX = ~/Maildir All other folders are maildirs in ~/Mail Eg. ~/Mail/archive, ~/Mail/sent, ~/Mail/some-mailing-list I configured this, along the lines of http://wiki.dovecot.org/Namespaces: # I unset 'mail_location' namespace private { separator = '/' prefix = location = maildir:~/Maildir inbox = yes list = yes subscriptions = yes } namespace private { separator = / prefix = archives/ location = maildir:~/Mail hidden = no #subscriptions = yes inbox = no list = yes } which I thought should do it, but it doesn't. In TB (3, if it matters), I see: Inbox Trash archives Trash Inbox (shaded) directory (shaded) And that's about it. I don't see any of the pre-existing maildirs in ~/Mail. I also can't delete the two additional "Inbox" and "Trash" folders, and I can't subscribe to the second "Inbox", nor to "directory". I proceeded to create a new folder under "archives", which mostly ended up to be a new maildir + index files under ~/Mail, but it had a '.' in front of it. Also, the separator was automatically reset to '.' for the second namespace, as I found out when I renamed one of the directories from 'dir.1' to '.dir.1'. Am I still doing something wrong, or is this a bug or limitation in Dovecot, or in this version of it? Kind regards, --Toni++

[Dovecot] Occasional problem with POP3-Download

Hello everyone, I have two mailservers [1] running dovecot. Mail store format is maildir. Every once in a while I have the following problem: When a User downloads his mail via POP3, the client says something like "the server has closed the connection unexpectedly, and gives this reason: [...blahblah...]". One can now cancel the download, and restart it, and the problem shows up again and again. The first few mails get downloaded, and then the process stops. Strange to say the "blahblah"-portion is a piece of text out of the email that doesn't want to get downloaded. Then I remove this single message out of the Maildir/cur-directory, and everything is fine again. It is easy to figure out which mail to delete because it's the first one that is not market as seen [...] filename...:2,S otherfilename...;2, <= this file must be deleted [...] For me it looks as if dovecot had a problem with some byte sequence in this mail, and for some reason it gives an error message to the client which is taken out of the mail. On the SuSE-Machine, before dovecot there was a courier-imapd running, which never showed this kind of problem, so it should not be a client problem. Hopefully my description is clear enough. Does anyone have an idea what's going on here? Thanks. Hello, dovecot-1.2.10 dovecot-sieve-0.1.14 dovecot-managesieve-0.11.11 I believe I patched dovecot successfully and compiled the dovecot and dovecot-sieve source tress. patching file README.managesieve patching file dovecot-example.conf patching file src/master/child-process.c patching file src/master/child-process.h patching file src/master/listener.c patching file src/master/login-process.c patching file src/master/mail-process.c patching file src/master/main.c patching file src/master/master-settings-defs.c patching file src/master/master-settings.c patching file src/master/master-settings.h Then I configure dovecot-managesieve and this completes without error. Hi, I have an Android Mail App which worked fine with IDLE pushes before (K-9 Mail) under 1.2.10. With 2.0 beta 3 it seems to be looking for an IDLE prompt from the server, otherwise it will disable connection idling (whether this is valid or not). Setting 'imap_capability = IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID IDLE ENABLE' does the trick, but is it possible to add additional values to the default reply like this? imap_capability = +IDLE ...or whatever syntax/form one would chose to preserve internal defaults. is there a plugin or some other method by which i could have a user ONLY have access to subscribed folders? having a separate login or a separate instance of dovecot is ok if necessary. the iPhone always shows ALL folders, not just subscribed ones. i'd like to be able to see only the subscribed folders.

And since I had to break some of them, I decided it could be a good time to do some other less necessary API cleanups. This made things again much simpler. I'm hoping to get v2.0.rc1 out in not too distant future. Pretty much the only big missing feature that I wanted to do is being able to add per-protocol auth settings (e.g. protocol smtp { userdb { .. } }), but that doesn't seem to be all that easy to implement. There are of course some bugs still left to be fixed, mainly related to mdbox and dsync. User visible changes: - imap_zlib plugin implements COMPRESS=DEFLATE IMAP extension - zlib plugin: Added support for compressing mails while saving - zlib plugin: fixed reading bzip2 compressed mail files - zlib plugin: Added support for dbox and mdbox formats - mdbox: doveadm purge moves old mails to alt storage (if using alt storage) - added support for tcpwrappers - added support for SHA512 password scheme (by Mark Washenberger) - mailbox deletion is now free of race conditions (e.g. quota calculations). if another session tries to access mailbox before it's fully deleted, it'll get "Mailbox is being deleted" error. - "key = $set" in config file now sets key's value to "set" setting's value. this is probably rather limited outside the only place where I created it for: service { user = $default_internal_user } - default_internal_user and default_login_user settings now specify what users should be used for them. currently the default is still dovecot and dovecot, but I'm hoping to change default_login_user to something else.. - Removed maildir_copy_preserve_filename setting. It's now always tried to be preserved (or rather: message's GUID is preserved) - auth failure penalty tries to avoid increasing penalty for IP if auth is failing always with the same user+password combination. - doveadm penalty command can be used to see the current penalties - login processes: config lookups are now cached, so it no longer asks for configuration from config process every time (except if there are remote {} blocks in config. also the local {} caching could be smarter.) - Tons of mdbox fixes - Tons of dsync fixes, especially with mbox So some of the changes visible to developers are: - dovecot-config file changed. if your external plugin uses this file, you need to change it to use the new format. - added dovecot.m4 file that can be used by external plugins' configure script to get Dovecot settings. This was mainly done by Dennis Schridde. - mailbox_alloc() no longer has stream parameter, instead there's mailbox_open_stream() - mailbox_close() renamed to mailbox_free(). added a different mailbox_close(), which only closes opened mailbox, but doesn't free it. - mailbox_delete(), mailbox_rename() APIs changed - notify plugin's delete/rename API changed as well - mailbox GUID is now looked up using mailbox_get_guid(), not mailbox_status() - dict_iterate*() API changed

Hello, while reading config options for dovecot v1.2.10 I've noticed a very small bug: # ./configure --help | egrep -- 'Dovecot|--with-gnu-ld' `configure' configures Dovecot 1.2.10 to adapt to many kinds of systems. --with-gnu-ld assume the C compiler uses GNU ld [default=no] --with-gnu-ld assume the C compiler uses GNU ld default=no I think the latter entry should be removed. Hello everyone, I am currently running Dovecot as a high performance solution to a particular kind of problem. My userbase is small, but it murders email servers. The volume is moderate, but message retention requirements are stringent, to put it nicely. Many users receive a high volume of email traffic, but want to keep every message, and *search* them. This produces mail accounts up to 14+GiB. After seeing the failures of my predecessors, I transitioned to Postfix/Dovecot and haven't looked back. Things are running nicely with the below setup. Postfix and Dovecot running on the same virtual machine on a Dell 2950 with 1x Xeon E5440 on ESXi 4. Maildirs served up by 10x146GB 15k RPM SAS drives on RAID-10 via direct attached Dell MD-1000. We are transitioning other services to high availability, and I'm wondering exactly how to provide some kind of near-realtime failover for my Postfix/Dovecot machine. The MD-1000 provides nothing in the way of iSCSI, but it *does* have two SAS connections available, only one of which is in use. I have been looking at the Dell EqualLogic stuff and it seems to provide what we need. I can get most of the information I need from the rep, but I wonder if anyone has any experience with high performance requirements on these kinds of storage. I'd like to continue running my current hardware as the primary mail server, but provide some kind of failover using the SAN. The primary usage of the SAN will be to make our 2TB document store highly available. I'm wondering what kind of options I might have in the way of piggybacking some email failover on this kind of hardware without sacrificing the performance I'm currently enjoying. Is it possible to go with a virtual machine mounted on iSCSI acting as a backup mail server? How would I sync the two, NBD+MD? Any experience doing this with maildirs? I wonder about the performance. Can it be as simple as attaching my MD-1000's second controller to the SAN magic box via SAS and pressing the Easy button? Is it as expensive as running my primary mailserver mounted from the SAN via Fiber Channel? Will that get me under 30ms latency? Hi, This might be a silly question: which would be the best inode ratio for a 5 Tb filesystem dedicated to Maildir++ storage? I use ubuntu server, which has a preconfigured setting for mkfs.ext4 called "news" with inode_ratio = 4096, and after formating the fs with that setting and then with the defautl setting I see this difference of space (wasted space, but more inodes): 4328633696 free 1K-blocks with mkfs's "-T news" switch = 1219493877 free inodes 4557288800 free 1K-blocks with default mkfs settings = 304873461 free inodes I'll be storing e-mail messages for around 20,000 accounts on that partition (average 512 Mb per account). Would you consider worth the waste of about 200 Gb of the filesystem space in exchange of more inodes? Thanks. Rodolfo.

But there have been other things I've thought about mentioning somewhere, but Dovecot ML didn't really seem like the right place. I doubt I'll update the blog very often. Hi, I'm having trouble implementing the virtual pop3 inbox solution in Dovecot 1.2.x. As the following wiki page describes (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Virtual) one should only set the inbox=yes flag for the virtual namespace which then flattens all mailboxes in the realmails/ prefix. In the above example when I set the inbox=yes flag for the virtual namespace, the inbox in the realmails/ prefix gets left out for obvious reasons. How did the original author intend this to work? Hi everybody, we're currently in the process of drafting our new mailserver-setup. Instead of a single-server-setup we'd like to have two equal servers behind a loadbalancer like LVS and shared mailhomes on NFS. We'd like to use dovecot for POP/IMAP, dovecot-deliver as LDA. - It's probably the best idea to direct SMTP and POP/IMAP always to the same server behind the loadbalancer (because dovecot-deliver is used which updates indexes?) - If we think of a "active/passive" setup: dovecot index-files locally or on the nfs-share? - Is it possible to activate loadbalancing for SMTP in this environment if dovecot index-files are held locally on each machine (POP/IMAP is directed only to one of the two servers?) Dear List, I have a few questions regarding dovecot sasl authentication that are somewhat related to each other. I have a working dovecot config with ---------- ssl_verify_client_cert = yes .. . ssl_require_client_cert = yes ssl_username_from_cert = yes --------------- (With this set up I need not set a correct user name in my mail client so long as I have it correctly in cert.) It turns out that I cannot export client socket to postfix to do smtp authentication unless I comment out ssl_require_client_cert=yes Does it mean that postfix is not passing to dovecot any information about certificate? Is passing certificate information not part of sasl framework? If so I won't be able to use it with a different sasl implementation. Also if I comment out ssl_require_client_cert=yes, then I can no longer use username from cert to log in to retrieve my pop mail. I prefer to get username this way otherwise my thunderbird mailbox reads user@domain.org@domain.org; I could have more than one domain in my dovecot servers. Thanks mr.wu

Is any posibility to pass parameters/environment variables to deliver with sieve plugin? I have some procmail rules to decide where mail should go, which can't be migrated to sieve (uses external programs). So far I write it to maildirs, but I wonder to migrate to mdbox, and procmail can't handle it. Any ideas? hi all, I'd like to make deliver put mail into a nearly full mailbox even when they become overquota as a result. The same problem came up a few weeks ago: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2010-January/045695.html Since no solution was offered may I suggest this topic as an additional feature for future releases? ;-) This is a important for me because sometimes users are lazy. They think "oh, still 10% left, no reason to delete mail" while in the meantime large messages are already bounced, while some small ones arrive in the users inbox. cheers, achim

[Dovecot] Client behaviour with sieve

Hi, I have a working dovecot imap-server, with sieve. I find it odd that my mail-clients (Thunderbird 2 and 3) don't report anything that's new in the folders. What I mean is this : Postfix get's a mail and hands it over to dovecot's LDA and sieve moves it to a folder. When I log in with Thunderbird, I see new messages in my Inbox. But that message that was moved to a folder is "invisible" until I click on the folder. Then Thunderbird sees there are new messages in that folder and reports the number of new messages and makes the foldername bold. Is this the expected behaviour ? Or did I configure something wrong ? Upgraded from Debian Dovecot 1.0.15 to Debian Dovecot 1.2.10-1~bpo50+1. I use Postfix local delivery to and Dovecot mbox. As per upgrade directions, I stopped dovecot processes and deleted all dovecot.index.cache files in /home/%user/mail/.imap. Performed upgrade to 1.2.10-1~bpo50+1. Modified new dovecot.conf for my environment. Started dovecot. Problem: Instantly noticed in TB 3.0.1 Win32 that all emails in all folders were marked as unread. Stopped TB, stopped dovecot, deleted *all* files in /home/%user/mail/imap/ so indexes and caches could be rebuilt from scratch. Started dovecot, started TB. Same problem. Then I got ugly, stopped TB and dovecot, deleted all ~.imap/ files *and* deleted *all* TB cache and index files with a time stamp of today. Restarted dovecot, restarted TB. Same damn problem. I sit hit right clicking folder after folder and selecting "mark as read", only to see all the emails in the folder go "read" and then within seconds go back to marked as unread (bold). Opening messages one at a time and moving to the next doesn't even keep them marked as read. WTF is going on? Why won't they stay marked as read? I've got over 25,000 emails in these folders and I get a few hundred list mails a day. I really need to get this read/unread business straightened out. What the heck am I missing? Is this a bug in the Debian backport? Good thing I have no hair or I'd have pulled half of it out by now... -- Stan

With 1.0.15 my configuration I a single dovecot-auth process, which is what I want now. Since upgrading to 1.2.10 I have two such processes: root 16992 16990 0 Feb15 ? 00:00:00 dovecot-auth root 16997 16990 0 Feb15 ? 00:00:00 dovecot-auth -w I can't seem to tweak dovecot.conf to get this down to one auth process again. I've tried setting each of these below to 0, which resulted in either none, or one auth process. In the case of the one auth process, T-Bird wasn't working correctly, although it presented no pop up or other errors. When I'd click an IMAP folder it would just show whitespace and never pull up the emails. auth_worker_max_count = # Number of authentication processes to create count = This is an extremely low volume host, and I'm an efficiency freak. I don't like having "unnecessary" processes running if it is at all possible to avoid it. Given my IMAP user load, I know for a fact that I should only need one auth process, and for that matter, given my load, running all the dovecot processes from inetd is even a valid option, although I've not yet attempted that. hi Today I have been in a puzzling fight with 2 dovecot versions that I would like to ask some comments on. The situation is this: - I have a considerable mail archive in mbox format (yes, I know, but that is what I have..). - My mail reader is mutt 1.5.20 by the way. - Some of these mbox files have names like firstname.initial.lastname Note the . seperating the parts of the email-ers name. - On my old system I have dovecot v 1.1.7 which has always worked flawless - On my new system I have dovecot v 1.2.8 which refuses to handle these dot-seperated files. I get the somewhat familiar "Mailbox doesn't allow inferior mailboxes". On a not-previously-existing mbox dovecot 1.2.8 produces the directory hierarchy thing: firstname -> initial -> lastname - I am using the same dovecot.conf on v.1.1.7 and v.1.2.8 Can anyone tell me if v1.2.8 no longer is able to do what v1.1.7 did? I'm going to assume this is just not possible, or that no one has an answer, which would lead me back to uw-imap since it does work as-is. I can browser all the way down to the folder, but I can't see anything within that folder. For example, consider the full path to the following 'Ashley-Dec09' mailbox: ~mail-Archives/2009/Ashley/Ashley-Dec09 In Thunderbird, when I hit 'Subscribe' I can browse down to '2009' and I can see 'Ashley', but I can't drill down into it and subscribe to 'Ashley-Jan09'. What am I missing here?

Hi all, Using dovecot-1.2.6, I use dovecot with an LDAP backend for user authentication. In general this works ok, but I have some issues with this... In LDAP, I have users like this: dn:cn=user1,ou=users,dc=kapott,dc=org dn:cn=user2,ou=users,dc=kapott,dc=org etc. When authenticating users, I explicitely want to use the AUTH_BIND feature (and NOT lookup passwords). My problem: not ALL users from the LDAP system should be allowed to use the IMAP server. Currently, I have defined an auth_bind_userdn of "cn=%u,ou=users,dc=kapott,dc=org" in dovecot-ldap.conf, but with this, user1 AND user2 could login (but I don't want user2 to be able to use dovecot). Because the LDAP system is used in a larger environment, it is NOT possible to re-arrange the users like this: cn=user1,ou=dovecot,ou=users,dc=kapott,dc=org cn=user2,ou=not_dovecot,ou=users,dc=kapott,dc=org So my question: are there any plans to support group-based LDAP authentication? For several other application, I have something like this: dn:cn=dovecot,ou=groups,dc=kapott,dc=org objectclass:groupOfNames member:cn=user1,ou=users,dc=kapott,dc=org So I can define groups of user accounts - one group per application. A nice solution for this in dovecot would be, if I could "mix" password lookup and authentication bind: First, a search query should be used to find a valid DN to bind as. In my case, the search query could look like this: base="ou=groups,dc=kapott.org" filter="(&(cn=dovecot)(member=cn=%u,ou=users,dc=kapott,dc=org))" result_attribute="member" After finding a DN this way (via attribute "member"), I want to use auth_bind to use this DN for password verification... For testing purposes, on a small set of users, we've run the courier-dovecot-migrate.pl script. We are converting from Courier 0.43 to Dovecot 1.2.9. For the most part, things seem to be ok. However, an iPhone IMAP client user is reporting a problem where some of her messages don't show up. Even stranger is the fact that these same messages do appear when using Outlook 2k7 for instance. The common denominator for when the messages are missing seems to be whether or not the message appeared in both the Courier IMAP and Courier POP3 uid files. The missing messages appear in the CourierIMAP file, but NOT the Courier POP file. After a while, I discovered that my virtual mailboxes are listed twice: Once with \NoSelect and once without. We use the fs layout, # so nesting of mailboxes is done using normal filesystem nesting. location = virtual:~/Mail/virtual:LAYOUT=fs } Now, should dovecot handle this configuration transparently by hiding the virtual directory from the default namespace, or is this configuration just not supported and should the virtual directory be outside of ~/Mail? Hello everyone, I'm trying to configure dovecot to allow users to share their imap folders. I've followed the wiki and i'm near to accomplish my tasks, when i set ACL properly on folders using imap commands the other user can see the folder as shared, but i can't subscribe to it or even access its content using any email client (like thunderbird) couse it looks like the path to the shared folder is not complete. i mean when i go to "manage subscriptions" i can see the shared folder from the other users as "shared/user@domain/sharedfoldername" but since only "sharedfoldername" is present i cant subscribe to it. am i missing somethimg? like do i need to setup a particular directory tree on the filesystem? thnx in advice for your help. I use Dovecot for SASL authentication from Postfix. In Postfix main.cf I have: smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot It works good, but now I need to allow users to connect by IMAP only from given IP adresses. I've added extra field allow_nets to passdb in Dovecot, and IMAP authentication works fine. But now I can't connect to my SMTP server because when smtpd ask dovecot about user authentification, dovecot always denied it. Even if I try to connect to SMTP from correct IP, listed in allow_nets for user. hi... i upgrading dovecot from v1.0.7 to v1.2.10, so i perform some modifications (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.1 and http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.2) but i have the following problem when i want to test installation: in dovecot.conf, i set the user mail: mail_uid= 72940 mail_gid= 72941 but when i try to start dovecot i have the following error: # sbin/dovecot Error: Error in configuration file /etc/dovecot/etc/dovecot.conf line 962: Unknown setting: mail_uid Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/etc/dovecot.conf # sbin/dovecot --version 1.2.10 i try, but i dont know how to fix them :( thanks in advance! :) -- Salu2 ;)

Timo (and anyone else who feels like chiming in), I was just wondering if you'd be able to tell me if the amount of corruption I see on a daily basis is what you consider "average" for our current setup and traffic. Now that we are no longer experiencing any core dumps with the latest patches since our migration from courier two months ago, I'd like to know what is expected as operational norms. Prior to this we had never used Dovecot, so I have nothing to go on. Our physical setup is 10 Centos 5.4 x86_64 IMAP/POP servers, all with the same NFS backend where the index, control, and Maildir's for the users reside. Accessing this are direct connections from clients, plus multiple squirrelmail webservers, and pine users, all at the same time with layer4 switch connection load balancing. Each server has an average of about 400 connections, for a total of around concurrent 4000 during a normal business day. This is out of a possible user population of about 15,000. All our dovecot servers syslog to one machine, and on average I see about 50-75 instances of file corruption per day. I'm not counting each line, since some instances of corruption generate a log message for each uid that's wrong. This is just me counting "user A was corrupted once at 10:00, user B was corrupted at 10:25" for example. My opinion is that with a setup such as ours where a user can be logged in using Thunderbird, Squirrelmail, and their Blackberry all concurrently at the same time, there will always be the occasional index/log corruption. Unfortunately, he is of the opinion that there should rarely be any and there is a design flaw in how Dovecot is designed to work with multiple services with an NFS backend. How to fix it ? I was thinking about deliver extracting target address from Delivered-To: header added by qmail's preline, or use DTLINE env variable, whitch qmail populates with Delivered-To header.

Hi, I have, in one customer, a web server running on a Verisign-signed certificate SSL certificate. Everything works fine, IE and Firefox connects on https without asking anything, which usually happens on self-signed certificates. I'm trying to use that certificate on dovecot, but clients (Thunderbird basically) keeps saying the certificate is not valid. yes i'm using, when configuring Thunderbird, the same CN that was signed by Verisign for the web usage i've enabled verbose_ssl and got when thunderbird tries to connect: Feb 18 12:32:02 correio dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts): rip=201.86.xxx.xxx, lip=192.168.1.2, TLS handshaking: SSL_accept() failed: error:14094418:SSL routines:SSL3_READ_BYTES:tlsv1 alert unknown ca unknown CA ??? is that Thunderbird that is not recognizing the Verisign-signed certificate ? [Dovecot] revision control on maildir possible?

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to put a dovecot managed maildir under a vcs like system, for example git or bzr. I'd like to have a seamless history of all mail going in and out of my mailboxes, so a vcs like system seams a good choice for me. I'm not quite sure however if that would cause any problems to dovecot and what the best way of handling commits would be. [Dovecot] tls not working on ubuntu

Hello List, I'm new to dovecot. I have sucessfully configured dovecot with just virtual users on a centos linux box to my satisfaction; I can connect with TLS with disable_plaintext_auth = yes. This dovecot is also version > 1. Can't post exact version right now but it's what comes with Centos 5.4. On a Ubuntu 9.10 box here, I cannot connect with TLS (port 110) but I can connect with plain SSL (port 995). The config files between centos and ubuntu boxes are the same except for minor details. The following is the log entry Feb 17 21:38:18 ubuntu dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts): rip=192.168.0.101, lip=192.168.0.108 The output below is from a binary compiled from source. I have also tested with 1.1.11 (that I get from apt-get install) with the same config file. I have tested ubuntu with both Thunderbird 3 and thunderbird 2. Not sure what to call this - I'm actually working out the details as I type this. I want to have a valid username/password for an account for sending purposes - but when receiving this is an alias that broadcasts to several users. Example: accountspayable(a)mydomain.com - is an alias for jane(a)mydomain.com, june(a)mydomain.com, and john(a)mydomain.com. However - any mails sent (from a particular client software) should all only show "accountspayable" as the sender. How would I implement this? I'm asking here because Dovecot serves as the authentication mechanism for my SMTP server (Postfix) via LDAP lookups. -- Daniel

The idea of salted hash algorithms is to generate a different hash even if the same text is entered. Your results are even more impressive if that's the case. Sorry if it's less impressive, but I've certainly configured the VM for 4 cores. The cores are shared equally between all VMs, I've done no prioritization because I've not had any performance issues related to resource contention. Having 10x15k RPM spindles to seek across, and 512MB of cache on the controller, means I can give Postfix/Amavis/Dovecot 3GB of RAM to use, and 1GB of it is always used for cache, without ever dipping into swap. Not at all, that's what the VMware tools are for. The ESXi host is configured to use our NTP server inside the VPN, and the VMware tools package synchronizes the guest clock with the host. I ran into this on our webmail client as well, then I discovered how easy it really is to install the VMware tools on Ubuntu, so it's no longer a problem. [Dovecot] sieve addflag has stopped working

Dovecot 1.2.10 in Debian, using Dovecot sieve. I have a sieve script, generated by Ingo, that's supposed to mark spam messages as "Seen" and file them into the Junk folder. In part it reads: require ["regex", "body", "imapflags", "fileinto"]; if exists "X-Spam-Flag" { addflag "\\Seen"; fileinto "Junk"; removeflag "\\Seen"; stop; } This has been working correctly for a long time, but since about 2 weeks ago now, the "Seen" flag isn't being set, although the messages are still being filed into the Junk folder. In two different mail clients, new messages in the Junk folder show up as being unread. Looking at the mail files that hold those messages, the file names don't have an "S" flag appended, while older messages all have the "S" and show up as already seen in the mail clients. I don't believe that I've updated dovecot recently, so I'm not sure why the behavior has changed. Note that I do have plugin { sieve_extensions = +imapflags } in dovecot.conf. I know that imapflags is deprecated, but it is still supposed to be supported. The way I have implemented things, this means two of these expensive lookups per incoming email (even if it was undeliverable!). At first this was using around 50% CPU on a dual Xeon domain controller. This was acceptable at the time, but after my optimizations we were able to move authentication to a virtual machine with 640MB of RAM and a single CPU core where it now stays below 20% all day. Changing the lookup to an indexed field probably cut the initial load by 90%. Adding auth_cache settings to dovecot.conf then further reduced load by more than 50%. Well, I suppose that screed should suffice for my first post. Well I've looked forward into the wiki and did not found my server have only system users ( no virtual domain ) and the wiki says : System users If you wish you use deliver for all system users on a single domain mail host you can do it by editing mailbox_command parameter in /etc/postfix/main.cf (postconf(5)): That's what I did but then I have this problem with DOTLOCK If I chmod 777 /var/mail directory it works but I do not feel comfortable with that kind of access rights ... [Dovecot] Capability COMPRESS implemented?

Hi, I just read that http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4978 ..is being implemented in Thunderbird 3. This is great news! It's been a long time since we last discussed this and I don't think it's currently implemented in Dovecot, but since Cyrus just added it, any chance of getting support in Dovecot please? (Fastmail seems to be supporting this effort) On a similar note we had a previous thread about supporting TLS deflate - any chance you could investigate this again and add support on the Dovecot side so at least it would be feasible to submit a bug fix on the Thunderbird side? (It looked like a one liner change back when we last discussed it?) [Dovecot] So, what about clustering and load balancing?

Hello world, so, with beta2 of Dovecot 2.0 being available, what is the preferred way to achieve load balancing and fault tolerance? As far as I can see it, there are basically two options: 1) Use a HA shared storage, export either a cluster filesystem or NFS, and have your dovecot servers mount that file system. Load balance these servers (Cisco ACE, ldirectord, ...) and there you go. Overall performance is limited by the speed of the shared storage and may further decrease due to locking issues, imperformant cluster filesystems and so on. 2) Set up every dovecot server with local storage and trigger a dsync after each change (pyinotfiy, incron, parse LMTP delivery logs, ...). Load balance these servers as before. Depending on the number of syncs that have to be done, mailbox replication may lag behind. The need to constantly spawn dsync processes may further decrease performance if you don't do it right (stickiness of established connections, replicating at most every xyz seconds). What are your opinions on that matter? Stefan P.S: I've set up option two in a test setup, though the incron/inotify part is still giving me a headache.

[Dovecot] POP3 with dovecot LDA and sieve

Hello. I'm using Postfix with Dovecot as IMAP, POP3 and LDA. With sieve rules I successfully move mails to specific mailboxes and this is great if accessing the account thru IMAP. However, when accessing thru POP3 I only get mails from Inbox. I wonder if it's possible to get real new mails, regardless of the folder they're in. Thanks for any thoughts. Arthur

Hello, As per a previous reply regarding POP3 I'm now trying to configure the virtual plugin. However I don't really understand how to modify the sql user_query to properly indicate inbox=yes. [Dovecot] deliver and cloning file permissions

Hi! I'd like to use deliver (dovecot-1.2.10) as LDA to deliver mails to my local users on my postfix-system. However, deliver tries to copy the filesystem permissions of the mail-spool-files to the user's index files, which doesn't work, since the files in /var/mail/ belong to the group 'mail'. Feb 13 00:21:19 leo-x61 dovecot: deliver(leo): fchown(/home/leo/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.log.newlock, -1, 12(mail)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=100(users), group based on /var/mail/leo) I know that dovecot tries to clone the mailbox permissions in order to support shared folders but it would be nice if there was an option to disable this (or to just try it and ignore the fchown error). I could manually change group ownership of all mailboxes from mail to each user's primary group or set the mailbox-modes to 0600 but I'd also have to do that for every new user. (Tools to create users like useradd from shadow-utils use hardcoded file modes and group ownership.) Is there any workaround?
