[Dovecot] multiple attribute templates?

Hi, I've been using an attribute template for some time without any problems. My accounts are on an LDAP server and I have an attribute maildropPath which is the maildir path for the user relative to /home/vmail That is, user "mabsatz(a)example.org" has, in attribute maildropPath the string "example.org/mabsatz", meaning that the maildir is in /home/vmail/example.org/mabsatz This is configured like this (taken from http://wiki.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/LDAP/Userdb) user_attrs = maildropPath=mail=maildir:/home/vmail/%$ pass_attrs = uid=user,userPassword=password,maildropPath=userdb_mail=maildir:/home/vmail/%$ and it works OK. Now I want to start using sieve and, since all accounts are virtual, I want to use a subdirectory "sieve" within the maildir to hold the scripts, so I need (I think) a userdb home to point to the same path... being a monkey I tried to imitate (or rather, extend) the previous configuration like this: user_attrs = maildropPath=mail=maildir:/home/vmail/%$,maildropPath=home=/home/vmail/%$ pass_attrs = uid=user,userPassword=password,maildropPath=userdb_mail=maildir:/home/vmail/%$,maildropPath=userdb_home=/home/vmail/%$ Alas... this didn't work... that is, apparently, the "home" attribute works OK (I got my scripts on the /home/vmail/example.org/mabsatz/sieve directory), but the "mail" attribute got lost and mail is being delivered to /home/vmail/mabsatz. Is there a way to use more than one attribute template AND that both use the same LDAP attribute? Otherwise, can someone think of a better way to do what I'm trying to do? [Dovecot] Deliver EX_TEMPFAIL's without giving any information

Hi all. I've had a hard time trying to find out why deliver isn't working after I've updated dovecot from v1.11 to v1.2.8. It just gave me EX_TEMPFAIL without any info in the logs. My deliver was setuid-root. Once I've made a simple shell wrapper script for the deliver executable which saves deliver's stdout+stderr, I've found the reason: /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver must not be both world-executable and setuid-root. This allows root exploits. See http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA#multipleuids Did a 'chmod o-x deliver' and fixed groups/owners and now everything works as it should. I think this error message should go to log files, not just to stdout/stderr. And it's worth to describe this behaviour in the Wiki. Cheers, Denis

Hello, I'm new to dovecot and I've been taking my time examining what makes dovecot work. If I have imap and pop3 listed as protocols, dovecot -n outputs: mail_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 I don't understand why imap is listed twice once as (default), and the other without (default). As a secondary question, why would you want a default of imap as opposed to pop3? Thanks. John

I had read dovecot logging info, they say something about using log rotation to help us rotate our log, with this setup: # dovecot SIGUSR1: Re-opens the log files. /var/log/dovecot*.log { missingok notifempty delaycompress sharedscripts postrotate /bin/kill -USR1 `cat /var/run/dovecot/master.pid 2>/dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true endscript } Well, my question is simple, Do we need to restart the service each time logrotation runs? In my case, is wrong this? var/log/dovecot*.log { weekly rotate 8 notifempty missingok copytruncate create 600 root start 0 } I have 2 dovecot logs: dovecot-info.log dovecot.log dovecot-info.log is the biggest, 5MB by week, is to much? Do I have to change our log rotation to "daily"? Centos 5.4 updated, dovecot 1.0.7-7.el5, thanks!!!

Hi,Using Dovecot 1.2.9 with Maildir and Layout=FS.In a plugin, i'm overriding "update_flags":void my_mail_update_flags(struct mail *_mail, enum modify_type modify_type, enum mail_flags flags)For this email which is having its flags updated, I need to retrieve the physical filename of the message. I see where using:mail_get_special(_mail, MAIL_FETCH_UIDL_FILE_NAME, &fname);...I can retrieve part of the filename, but without the ":2" and the flags part.Is there a method I can use to get the whole filename (without having to reassemble it myself). [Dovecot] Design: Optimizations for high-latency storage backend

Mainly intended for future support of key-value (etc.) databases, but this is probably useful even for regular disk I/O. By using async I/O for disk access, the OS could more intelligently do seeks on disk to read the wanted data with less latency. Problem #1: Accessing message body while searching (e.g. SEARCH BODY). The idea is that searching wouldn't block. Caller would typically use mailbox_search_next_nonblock() function, which can return "try again later" result. Whenever search sees a query that could potentially block (e.g. SEARCH BODY, or searching a header that might not be cached), it goes into a slightly different search mode: - the whole search would typically be run from beginning to end immediately, and the search result state would be stored for each message. - whenever search runs into a situation where the result can't be determined without opening message body, it issues a prefetch command for that message, marks the result for the message as "incomplete", and continues to the next message - once the search is done with all messages, it starts replying to the caller. if the next search result is incomplete at the time, the search returns "try again later". optimizations: - probably there should be prefetch limit (a queue) so that only maybe 10 requests are actually pending at a time. - probably the whole search shouldn't run immediately. maybe it should stop after having 10 requests pending. - prefetch could return only the needed parts of the message, such as "only header" or "only body" (or in future something like "message without attachments") There would be a new call, something like mailbox_search_set_nonblock_callback() that specifies a function to be called when next search result is available. The callback then would continue the search. This is similar to how IMAP SEARCH is already implemented, except currently when mailbox_search_next_nonblock() returns "try again later", Dovecot simply adds a 0 second timeout after which it's called again (that's enough for Dovecot to do some other pending work). Problem #2: Accessing index cache while searching. Cache file is typically in memory or in low-latency disk already. Anyway something similar to #1 could be implemented for it. "Make sure cache x..y bytes in cache file have been read to memory" call or something. Problem #3: Fetching message body (and uncached fields). The nice thing about lib-storage's fetching API is that the caller already specifies what fields it intends to access in mailbox_search_init(). So this code can use a similar technique than searching: - callers only use mailbox_search_next_nonblock() - which keeps returning "try again later" until the message body has been read to memory - trying to access a field that's not specified in wanted_fields in mailbox_search_init() could be (optionally) treated as a programming error and cause a crash instead of a blocking wait. Problem #4: How to drop latencies between IMAP commands? For example a (stupid) client issues commands: a FETCH 1 BODY.PEEK[] a FETCH 2 BODY.PEEK[] ..etc.. You really don't want to a delay between each command. So what Dovecot code needs to happen is to start processing the next command while waiting for previous one to finish reading the body to memory. A lot of this actually already works as intended, but there are some cases that don't, such as FETCH + SELECT (see #5). Problem #5: Opening mailbox index. So if your indexes are also stored in high-latency disk, how do you optimize getting STATUS for each mailbox? Again, a similar idea than before: Create a new mailbox_open_nonblock() function that calls a given callback function when the indexes are read to memory. During the wait it can continue processing more STATUS commands (hopefully client sends them all at once, instead of waiting for each reply before sending next STATUS). .. I think that's all of the problematic cases that could cause blocking. And the solution is always the same: Use prefetching and "try again later" status code with a callback function to be called when it's ready. Luckily there are only two functions that need the above behavior, implementing async callbacks for all functions would have made programming it horrible. The main problem will then be to optimize what and how much to prefetch. For example in the cache file case, should the cache be read to memory when mailbox is opened, or should it be delayed until something is actually wanted to be read from it? Should all of it be read, or should Dovecot attempt to be smarter to reduce memory usage and I/O bandwidth, so e.g. if the cache is wanted to be accessed to 3rd last message, maybe just read the cache file beginning from that message to EOF? Transaction log files have a similar problem. Actually all of this is similar to how Dovecot attempts to cache them to memory when using mmap_disable=yes, so it's not really a new problem.

[Dovecot] Design: Mailbox list indexes

I drove over 2000 miles in recent days, so I had some time to think about future Dovecot things. :) Maybe for v2.1 or v3.0, whichever I happen to release next. Here's the first thought: The main idea behind mailbox list indexes was to make getting STATUS information for mailboxes from a single index file. The code was already written for Dovecot v1.1, but it was disabled because of bugs I never got around to fixing. It also was maybe a bit overdesigned to make it fast with thousands of mailboxes. There were two indexes: Mailbox UID -> name map index, and UID -> status info index. I don't think most people have that many mailboxes. Using two index files just makes the common case slower. So the new mailbox list index could be a single index (read/written to using the same index file API as for mails). Index's header would contain an ID -> string map. So basically an array of {uint32_t id, char nul-terminated-name[]} records. Each index record would contain: - mailbox UID number (32 bit) - ID number (32 bit), pointing to a string in the header. That'll be this mailbox's name. - parent mailbox UID (e.g. if parent's name is "foo" and our name is "bar", the mailbox is "foo/bar") - mailbox global UID (128 bit) - mailbox flags (\Noselect, \Nonexistent) - STATUS information: message/unseen counts, last-non-recent-uid (for recent count), uidvalidity, uidnext, highest-modseq - storage backend specific timestamps So typically the whole index would be read into memory and the mailbox tree would be generated based on the parent UID pointers. If there are any \Noselect or \Nonexistent mailboxes, they just have their GUIDs and STATUS info zeroed out. Each time a mailbox is created or renamed, a new name ID is added to the header with the given name. I don't think it's worth it to try to reuse old IDs. Unused names (after delete/rename) will be dropped sometimes later. Whenever STATUS information changes while accessing mailbox, the STATUS info is updated in mailbox list index. Also unless mailbox_list_index_dirty_syncs=yes (or something similar), the index can't be trusted by itself. So before trusting the index, Dovecot needs to check if the index is up to date by comparing the timestamps to what exists in filesystem. For example with Maildir there would be new/ and cur/ directories' mtimes. Then there's the problem of how to notice externally added/deleted/renamed mailboxes. It'll be immediately noticed if such mailbox is tried to be opened, but what about LIST replies? One possibility would be to refresh the list once when session begins and after that just have LIST return indexed mailboxes. Another would be to keep track of directory mtimes and keep stat()ing the dirs to see if something changes. The latter is probably more trouble than worth.. Besides caching LIST and STATUS replies, there's one additional thing I thought of that the mailbox list indexes will be useful for: atomic mailbox list updates. Even if the backend doesn't support e.g. atomic RENAME (such as Maildir++), this can be made practically atomic using the list index. CREATE, RENAME and DELETE commands begin by writing and committing a record to the mailbox list index about the change. Then they'll start the actual change, and finally write to the index that the change is complete. If it crashed in the middle, the next session would finish it. If another session tries to do a conflicting change before the change is finished, it would wait for the previous one to finish. (Probably practically the index would be write-locked and all changes would wait for previous ones to finish.) And the final functionality of this mailbox list index is for the future support of key-value (etc.) databases: The mailbox list index would be the authoritative list of mailboxes. It wouldn't be stored anywhere else.

[Dovecot] checking all folders for new mail (IMAP STATUS command)

Hello, I use Thunderbird as IMAP client and do a lot of server-side filtering with Sieve scripts. To be notified of new mails, I want to check all folders (a lot of them...) at once for new mails, and not only the inbox. According to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Checking_for_new_messages_in_other_folders_-_Thun… it should be sufficient to enable one setting -- given that the IMAP server returns the STATUS command correctly. I still run Dovecot 1.0 (from Debian 4.0), and it seems this version doesn't support the IMAP STATUS command, as I have to explictly query each folder with the second mentioned setting. What is the recommended way of checking all folders for new mails? Is there any server-side setting I can activate? Do newer versions of Dovecot support the STATUS command in the way Thunderbird expects it? Or does Dovecot even offer an option like the mentioned IMAP_CHECK_ALL_FOLDERS=1 and IMAP_ENHANCEDIDLE=1 in Courier? Sorry for my maybe dumb question... :-) Thanks, Florian

I am using Dovecot 1.2.9 "dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.14" and discarding email seems to work fine. The things I can think of are: 1) Wrong privileges for deleting. What user does procmail / deliver run as? 2) Old Bug in Sieve (http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-July/024290.html) 3) If it fails just sometimes, what is the difference between discarded and nondiscarded mails. If this does not turn up something, I do not have an idea what is going wrong. Only bugfix I then can you provide with, is not to discard but to move those files to a folder 'SPAM' and delete them by hand. Tobi

[Dovecot] Shared mailboxes do not support subfolders

Hi, I'm currently running Dovecot 1.2.8 with dbox mailboxes. I've configured the use of shared mailboxes. I'm able to only see the top-level mailboxes: e.g. Inbox LogWatch Trash Sent but not LogWatch/Server1 LogWatch/Server2 Is this a know limitation of a bug? Rgds, N.

[Dovecot] sieve vs deliver -m

I'm invoking deliver through postfix with a dovecot transport in master.cf, using the -m ${extension} argument. If I have no sieve script, or a sieve script with an implicit keep, the mail gets correctly filed into the -m mailbox. However if the sieve script has an explicit discard, this gets honored if it doesn't match another sieve action. Shouldn't -m take precedence? I would say that if an extension is present any other sieve action should be ignored, perhaps just sieve_before should be run then the message filed per the extension. -frank

[Dovecot] basic understanding of imap in dovecot

I have always used a pop3 daemon, and switching to dovecot has been my introduction to imap. Imap is foreign to me. I am wondering if I am a little off-track here, and would like some clarification. My MTA (exim) delivers email to: /mail/user dovecot, sucks that mail from /mail/user TO /home/user/mail/<filenamesoffolders> dovecot IMAP further uses /home/user/mail/.imap/folders/{.index / .index.cache / .index.log} the mail folder which exim uses doesn't seem to get emptied by dovecot when it sucks the email into /home/user/mail/<filenamesoffolders> when using IMAP. If POP3 is used via dovecot, then it appears that the interaction is directly to the original exim folder and that it does indeed empty (or at least it has the "FOLDER INTERNAL DATA" entry). I suppose my question is, is there a way to have dovecot empty/parse the original exim mailbox so that the customer email isn't sitting in two spots, taking up double the space. This would be in the IMAP environment only, as POP3 seems to be fine. Any online references available to help a newbee understand IMAP? Thanks!

[Dovecot] Permissions errors while reading messages via IMAP

Greetings all, I have been trying to setup a new system using Postfix and Dovecot to manage email for a bunch of virtual domains. So far everything is great, and I am now at the point where I am trying to build a webmail interface for the system. I'm using RoundCube for now. At this point I can login without issue but I can't see any mail messages. Hi all, We moved our Dovecot installation first of all to have all folders and inboxes on NetApps via NFS (with indexes local) then from a physical Solaris 8 4-way UltraSparc server running Dovecot 1.2.5 (32-bit) to a virtualised Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit server with a single virtual processor (in VMWare ESX 3.5) running Dovecot 1.2.8 (64-bit). This evening I tried with "login_process_per_connection = no" with no problems, except more CPU load and needing to increase login_max_processes_count (and strictly speaking the max fds set with ulimit -n would need to be increased, though I didn't do that as it would have involved killing and restarting the master process - come back Solaris plimit!) Just after midnight, I switched back to "login_process_per_connection = no" and set "login_max_connections = 32" and managed to get core dumps enabled, hence the above! Apart from this problem, the virtual machine has been doing extremely well, so it's not CPU or I/O load related. I'm not sure whether the problem is caused by the switch from Dovecot 1.2.5 to 1.2.8, Solaris to Linux, physical to virtual, or 32-bit to 64-bit! Perhaps we changed too much at once, but it did mean we kept the service going while power was turned off in our main machine room last weekend ... Or will that confuse the actual dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool.sh cronjob since some of the entries mailboxes won't exist locally? Ben

[Dovecot] qpopper to dovecot migration

Heya, We are in the process of migrating from qpopper to dovecot as POP3 server (and IMAP as well) and we hit the UIDL issue with dovecot. Qpopper uses its own algorithm to create UIDL values and if you set it up to write them down in the mbox file as X-UIDL, then dovecot can use them (pop_uidl_reuse = yes). But if you don't use that feature from qpopper, than X-UIDLs are missing and there is no way to create the same UIDL values. So, I was wondering if anyone else hit that issue and maybe knows how to address it (writing an extension or something)? Thanks in advance, regards, Jernej

[Dovecot] Dovecot Deliver CPU usage

Hi All, We have upgraded the dovecot from 1.0 to 1.2.8. After upgradation we have noticed that dovecot deliver process is utilizing a lot of CPU. As a result the mailsystem will stop working. When we limit the no of procs in postfix for dovecot deliver the CPU usage will come down. But we are not facing this problem with the previous version. Below is the log files for dovecot when the error occurs write_full(/home/vmail/dhanbank.co.in/vinukumarvm/temp.server.be3e5a849a909847) failed: No space left on device dovecot: deliver(user(a)example.com): stat(/tmp/Dovecot Delivery Mail) failed: No space left on device But my system has 54gb of free space for root filesystem where tmp residing. Hi all, after inserting another sieve-rule, I get the following backtrace on deliver. The mail gets delivered into the Mailbox, but as deliver does not exit with 0, postfix bounces the mail. Greetings all, I have a OpenBSD /Dovecot server at home running and sending / receiving email "internally" without issue.. Recently, I set up the same at our Parish, but one of our users wants to get their email externally. The user can read their email but has to "send" via the local ISP server.. The problem After much searching I have not found an answer to my question. I would like the user to authenticate to be able to "send" email "through" the server.. OpenBSD uses bsdauth by default in Dovecot. It may be something very simple that I am missing.. In Windows Live Mail I have this setting enabled: "Remove From Server When Deleted From Deleted Items". It does not seem to remove them even when the trash is emptied though. Am using POP3 access. Anyone else see this? Matt

I forked the wiki to http://wiki1.dovecot.org/ is the old docs for v1.x http://wiki2.dovecot.org/ is the new docs for v2.0 For now wiki.dovecot.org points to wiki1, but once v2.0 is released I'll change it to point to wiki2. I symlinked the user directory, so users should stay synced between the wikis. The main reason for wiki2 is to be able to describe Dovecot v2.0's actual behavior everywhere and get rid of all the old v1.x specific settings. The wiki1 is already annoyingly bloated and confusing with information about v1.0 and then v1.1 and maybe even how it's still different in v1.2.. Now would be a good time to do any other larger changes, if anyone has suggestions. :) (Oh, and I haven't yet done any actual changes to wiki2..)

Hello Dovecot users, Due to personal matters I haven't had time to do anything in the last few weeks. Before that I provided some pre-releases and since nobody indicated problems with those, I release them definitively now. I hope the shit storm has blown over, so that I can dedicate more of my time towards Pigeonhole development. The Sieve release involves a large architectural change, but also fixes quite a few small problems. The ManageSieve release is necessary to match Sieve API changes. Changelog Sieve v0.1.14: * Made the imposed limits on the number of redirects and the number of actions configurable. The settings are called sieve_max_actions and sieve_max_redirects. * Did a major rework of extension handling, making sure that no global state is maintained. This change was triggered by problems that global state info would cause for Dovecot v2.0, but it is also important for v1.2 as it significantly cleans up the library implementation. + Made LDA Sieve plugin recognize the deliver_log_format setting. + Message headers produced from user-supplied data are now RFC2047-encoded if necessary for outgoing messages. This is for example important for the :subject argument of the vacation action. + Added support for the $text$ substitution in the deprecated notify extension. + The subaddress extension now also accepts recipient_delimiter setting as an alias for sieve_subaddress_sep setting. This anticipates the recipient_delimiter setting in v2.0. - Fixed logging of mailbox names. It logged the converted mUTF7 version in stead of the original UTF8 version supplied by the user. - Fixed a minor memory leak in the multiscript support. - Fixed a bug in the recompilation of Sieve scripts. Made sure that scripts are only recompiled when the script file - or the symlink pointing to it - is strictly newer. Hi all: We're planning to deploy a large e-mail system storing maildirs in a NAS system through NFS. One of the options we're thinking on is using Dovecot+EXIM. As far as I've read in both project's documentation, both services implement locking allowing multiple servers to access the same maildirs in order to distribute the service load. However, I can't find any information explaining whether both locking mechanisms are compatible, whether any additional configuration is needed both in Dovecot and/or EXIM, or even whether any locking synchronization between both services is needed/recommendable at all. The only remote clue I've found is that, according to Dovecot docs: "Because Dovecot uses its own non-standard locking (dovecot-uidlist.lock dotlock file), other MUAs accessing the maildir don't support it." (but EXIM is not a MUA, anyway) Anyhow theoretically MailDir could even be considered free of locking problems, but I'm not sure of the real implications of putting together several Exim and Dovecot installations pointing to the same NFS filesystem. Any knowledge/experience/link/clue on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Daniel Campos

Hi, i've just upgraded to dovecot-1.2.8 (from 1.2.4) and do now get the following errors when deliver gets hands on mails with some attachments. # tail -n 1 /var/log/messages Dec 14 19:00:36 mail3 dovecot: deliver(user): Panic: file istream.c: line 96 (i_stream_read): assertion failed: (stream->eof) The MTA is postfix running inside a FreeBSD 7.2-STABLE jail. The homes where deliver should put mails are mounted via NFS. As it works with small attachments perhaps this is related to the message size. However i don't get the "stale NFS file handle" error any more which i did under 1.2.4 (See thread that begins with: Message-ID: <20091016122519.GC6309(a)emmi.physik-pool.tu-berlin.de> ) Greetings, Leon

[Dovecot] dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files

In the past few months we've been having increasing problems with dovecot timing out pop3 logins. As best I can tell it gets to the point where it won't accept any new pop3 logins. The error in the mail log is: dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files I've researched this problem a number of times, usually I see suggestions to increase ulimit. I've done this a number of times, all the way up to: ulimit -n 8192 I've put that in the init script right above the daemon start line. So far it hasn't helped. In addition, when looking at lsof, it doesn't seem like we're anywhere near the actual limit. for example, last time dovecot only had 1032 files open. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the error? Or what else I can try to figure this out? [Dovecot] Maildir on NFS - attribute caching question

Hi Timo, We've been running Dovecot with Maildir on NFS for quite a while - since back in the 1.0 days I believe. I'm somewhat new here. Anyway... The Wiki article on NFS states that 1.1 and newer will flush attribute caches if necessary with mail_nfs_storage=yes. We're running 1.2.8 with that set, as well as mail_nfs_index=yes, mmap_disable=yes and fsync_disable=no. We have a pool of POP/IMAP and SMTP machines that are accessing the maildirs, and can't guarantee any sort of user session affinity to a particular host. We also mount our NFS shares with 'noac', which is what I'm writing to ask about. I'd like to stop doing that for performance reasons. Do you see any issues with taking that out of the mount options, given our environment? Thanks, -Brad

Hi, since some time ago we do have a lot of "timeouts" connecting to our imap/po3 server. This week I switched the whole system to a new dual quadcore xeon, 24GB RAM, SAS2 RAID-10. (SUN Fire 4170) But the mailclients (mostly thunderbird and apple mail) still reporte the timeouts by accessing the mailboxes. The server is doing smtp, imap/pop3, webmailsystem and spam/antivirus-checking all together. (RH EL 5, sendmail, horde, mysql, mailscanner, spamassassin) We use the original RH dovecot-1.0.7, mbox-format and mailboxes up to 4 GB ... (historicaly grown ...) So where to start debugging the imap/pop3 timeouts? What information may I provide, which doc may I read? Thanks for helping me to find and fix the problem. The configuration and the APIs shouldn't change in non-backwards compatible ways. There are still bugs left to be fixed and some small features to be implemented, but I'd like to have people start testing it more. The biggest unimplemented "feature" is how to convert v1.x configuration easily/automatically to v2.0. Either the old config file should be translated to new one, or Dovecot should be able to read the old config file as-is. I think I like the translation better, so that people won't still be using v1.x configuration when v2.1 arrives and drops v1.x support. Seems to work but it's weird that I lost my subscribed folders. Also the perl script imapsync is only seeing an inbox and no other folders. Hi, I just upgraded to from dovecot v1.1.15 to v1.2.9 so I can use dovecot- sieve. Most everything seems to work but my webmail (roundcube) clients are not seeing their subscribed folders. Hi all We are planning to upgrade Dovecot from production version 1.0.10 to latest version 1.2.9 Users are using maildir style mailboxes with ~20 GB of messages on SLES10 server. Upgrade will be done by installing new server and then migrating mailboxes from old on new server. Since dovecot-uidlist file have new format and index files have changed in v1.1, what must be done to have new Dovecot v1.2 working properly with old v1.0 maildirs? Thanks, regards Ivica Glavocic

The Dovecot version is 1.2.8 and i am using an LDAP for a user database. The problem is following... i would like to use a quota dictionary backend from file rather than sql proxy for some reasons. Is it possible to get the full path for dovecot-quota file location from LDAP like from mail variable (/mailboxes/storage_01/domain.org/u/us/use/user/dbox/dovecot-quota)? /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf user_attrs = storageBase=home,mailMessageStore=mail=dbox:~/%$/dbox/,mailQuota=quota_rule=*:bytes=%$,mailQuotaMessageLimit=quota_rule2=*:messages=%$ Also is it also possible the same for sieve location? If a mailbox is deleted, its messages are merged with its old expunged messages (if there were any). + expire: Settings now support spaces in mailbox names by using quoted strings. - maildir: v1.2.7 and v1.2.8 caused assert-crashes in maildir_uidlist_records_drop_expunges() - maildir_copy_preserve_filename=yes could have caused crashes. - Maildir++ quota: % limits weren't updated when limits were read from maildirsize. - virtual: v1.2.8 didn't fully fix the "lots of mailboxes" bug - virtual: Fixed updating virtual mailbox based on flag changes. - fts-squat: Fixed searching multi-byte characters.

Hi Timo, the imap_client_workarounds are not always parsed. There was on situation, in which cmd->client->set->parsed_workarounds was set to WORKAROUND_TB_EXTRA_MAILBOX_SEP. Sorry, I can't remember what I have done. But when I try to delete a mailbox with Thunderbird imap_client_workarounds are not parsed: (gdb) print cmd->client->set->imap_client_workarounds $7 = 0x1422de0 "tb-extra-mailbox-sep" (gdb) print cmd->client->set->parsed_workarounds $8 = 0 And therefor the command 'x delete box_with_trailing_slash/' fails. Hi All, I'm new to the list and have a quota question. I am building a new server with dovecot/qmail/vpopmail/mysql and emails are sending and recieving fine when the quota is set to NOQUOTA, but when the quota is changed qmail doesn't deliver any messages. I have read the docs and still need some help understanding the process for dovecot quotas relating to the vpopmail mysql database they are stored in. Thanks for your help. [Dovecot] S=xxx missing in new messages

Hi to all! I’m setting up dovecot 1.2.8 on my system to substitute an older IMAP server and I’m testing all features of Dovecot. Yesterday I was testing support for zlib, for compressed messages, to set up a new namespace for old mails and I read that it is safe to compress only mails that have the field “S=XXX” in their name (XXX being the original size of message) and to leave uncompressed the ones that don’t have S=XXX in their name. Testing and searching I discovered that only new mail, mail that used to arrive in mailbox via SMTP have S=XXX, mail copied from another mailbox loose S=XXX. Later I’ve found that this not work anymore, even directly delivered mail messages do not have S=XXX anymore. I use dovecot-lda as delivery program and postfix as SMTP server, but I’ve not touched postfix configuration since one month ago. What can it be? How can I have S=XXX again in my messages file name? Currently Dovecot only logs user principal w/o REALM. So before I go in production maybe somebody already run into this using Dovecot? If not I just create virtual machines and see how it behaves.

What is the appropriate setting for mail_max_userip_connections ? My POP3 connections seem to be mostly 1 at a time, but my IMAP connections are often 3 per user per IP. Is this appropriate? I have an user script like following: require ["copy"]; redirect :copy "addr1(a)dom.ain"; redirect :copy "addr2(a)dom.ain"; All works fine, but if addr1@... has exceeded quota, this script seems stop working and addr2@... doesn't receive this message too. Hi, Environment: >10000 Users (LDAP) Solaris 10 / sparc imap: dovecot-1.1.10 (pam-unix, no direct LDAP access) pop: dovecot-1.0.14 on another server (pam-unix, no direct LDAP access) mta: postfix (pam-unix, no direct LDAP access) procmail (pam-unix, no direct LDAP access) Filesystems: Inboxes and IMAP-home are on two different SAM-FS volumes. Problem description: Inboxes of users are disappearing / are truncated. we are using dovecot-1.1.0 since two month as main IMAP server. It replaced our long running but old version of UW-IMAP. Till the last week we had no problems and it worked quite well and the whole mail system worked in this configuration since several years. But since a week we receive more and more complaints regarding truncated/deleted mailboxes. First, we assumed user/client errors, but as such messages arrive more frequently, we did a deep analysis of the issue. The only common component of our mail system (postfix (local), procmail, pop, imap) that all concerned users have accessed, was dovecot-imap v. 1.1.10. We have no locking problems, we use fcntl(), dotlock for all mail components. We tested this with a small perl script and locking works fine (no delivery to a locked mailbox and so on...) Finally, all indications point to a bug in dovecot. Google and searches in this mailing list did not come up with any valuable results. Are there any known bugs / configuration problems concerned to the described problem? I greatly appreciate any help! Thx in advance Harald Strack

Hi, I want to use the zlib plugin to compress my mail storage. According to the wiki, only messages with size attribute in the message id should by compressed. If I added the size part, dovecot assumes it is a new message. While dovecot undertands the ',S=<size>' attribute (IMAP shows that size), I could not configure deliver to add the size to message name. I'm using dovecot v1.0.13 Regards, M. Alhashash

Here it is again to the correct mailing list: Recently I'm getting a ton of porn/viagra/diet/casino spam mails which I tried to filter with sieve: if header :contains "Subject" [ "[SPAM]", "Bett", "Schlafzimmer", "Spielen", "Luder", "abhenmen", "poppen", "Casino", "Bonus", "abnehmen", "Gewinn", "Potenz" ] { addflag "\\seen"; fileinto "Spam"; stop; } Sadly, this didn't work - taking a closer look upon one of the spam mails, it seems the spamming rats have encoded the subject: Subject: =?US-ASCII?B?RW5kbGljaCBtZWhyIGVuZ2FnZW1lbnQgaW0gQmV0dGNoZW4=?= (reads: "Endlich mehr engagement im Bettchen") I'm thinking about filtering all such encoded subjects (as there's no reason to encode them US-ASCII), but suppose it were UTF-8 or something: how can I filter on the actual content, not the encoded subject? Hi all! I got a Debian with postfix-dovecot-spamassassin. I got a non perfect installation: when an internal mail has been sent i got this error: <error> ex: from root@* to root@*. Command output: Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot.log: Permission denied </error> Operations like "dovecot: 2009-12-15 11:17:24 Warning: Killed with signal 15" are writen. It's a permission problem: dovecot.log is owned by "root" and grupped by "adm" (chmodded 640). Where is the problem? I'm really blind now! Tx 4 suggestions! Bye, Antonello

Dear Dovecot list, I maintain a few small sendmail/dovecot/procmail based mail servers with system users only (no virtual domains or virtual users) on OpenBSD. I have been able to get a vacation system working with both with the native vacation program from OpenBSD and with procmail. I've been looking into dovecot sieve, but it doesn't appear to solve the bigger user complaint which is, they want to be able to control the vacation feature w/o my involvement. What is wanted is a system where the users can send a control mail message to themselves with the reply body in the message or failing that perhaps a secure web page to control the vacation function. Mail administration is NOT a full time job for me. I'm looking for simple, low overhead solutions. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time. Ray

Hello I have a problem with dovecot-sieve. When I create a folder in russian, the filter is not working properly. It creates a new folder with the same name and delivers the letter there. For example, I created a folder called &BD8EQAQ4BDIENQRC-/, but the letter got in &-BD8EQAQ4BDIENQRC-/. In all cases, the difference in the sign -. [Dovecot] Doubts about namespace && thunderbird.

Hi people. I ask this because I'm confuse about the namespace stuff. I setup a server with Centos 5.4(updated)+dovecot 1.0.7+postfix 2.3.3. We use thunderbird 2.0.x as our default email client. I want to use courier-imap inbox layout: Inbox-- sent junk trash draft The inbox as father of the tree, other post say something about a namespace like this: separator = . prefix = Inbox. inbox = yes If I make this, thunderbird go crazy and tell me each time I try to access a user mail that :server respond-->unknown namespace, with this my layout is: Inbox Trash But if I try to access Trash, is went he send me that error and none of my users could access those folders. What is the problem with this? Now if I comment the namespace, my folders goes below the father(Inbox) u could not see the different. Last thing, how can I setup a global layout where each user the first time they log-in thunderbird could make: Trash, Draft, Sent? Thanks!!!

Hello, I'm having problems with expire-tool in Dovecot 1.2.6 not finding the mailboxes. I had mail_location = mbox:/var/spool/dovecotmail/%d/%n/mails:INDEX=/var/spool/dovecotmail/%d/%n/indexes in dovecot.conf, but that doesn't work with expire-tool. So I commented that out from dovecot.conf, all the data is in a database anyway. A userdb lookup returns the following for userid@domain: home = /var/spool/dovecotmail/domain/userid/ mail = mbox:/var/spool/dovecotmail/domain/userid/mails:INDEX=/var/spool/dovecotmail/domain/userid/indexes Now when running expire-tool --test, I get this: Error: Namespace '': Mail storage autodetection failed with home=/var/spool/dovecotmail/domain/userid/ Info: User lookup failed: userid@domain When I run expire-tool under strace, I can see that it is indeed looking for the mails in the typical autodetect locations (Maildir, mail, Mail) under user's home directory. So it appers that expire-tool takes the home directory from userdb, but ignores mail location returned by userdb? Tapio

[Dovecot] outlook 2007 mailbox sort order

What are people doing to affect the sort order of mailboxes in outlook? Apple Mail and MS Outlook similarly suck in that they do not sort '~' correctly -- mailboxes starting with '~' are first instead of last. At least I think this is the fault of the client, since Mulberry sorts correctly. At least with Apple Mail I can drag and drop mailboxes into any display order I like, so at least after the fact it can be "corrected". I want to provide shared, virtual and lazy_expunge mailboxes. I'd like these to be last in the list of mailboxes. This doesn't seem possible with Outlook unless I prefix the names with 'zz' or similar. yuk. -frank

Post-login scripts work a bit differently in v2.0, because the old way just couldn't work anymore. I suppose at some point I should fork the wiki to v1.x and v2.x and start writing these things there, but for now I'll just write it here: First you'll need to tell imap service that it should connect to postlogin service: service imap { executable = imap imap-postlogin } Then you'll need the imap-postlogin service: # The service name below doesn't actually matter. service imap-postlogin { executable = script rawlog /tmp/test.sh unix_listener imap-postlogin { } } The "script" executable does all the magic. If you want multiple scripts, just make them a chain, like above script first executes rawlog, and rawlog then executes /tmp/test.sh: #!/bin/sh echo "* OK Hello $USER ($IP -> $LOCAL_IP)" export MAIL=maildir:/tmp/test export USERDB_KEYS="$USERDB_KEYS mail" exec $* So it's pretty similar to how it works before, except now you'll also need to update $USERDB_KEYS to contain all environments that you want to pass to imap process.

People, There is an imap client, which runs with user1 uid, but when its accessed to watch a maildir, whose (and its contents) ownership is user1:user1, this error occurs: dovecot: IMAP(user1): fchown(/path/user1/dovecot-uidlist.tmp, -1, 12(mail)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=1000(user1), group based on /path/user1) dovecot.conf contains this line: mail_privileged_group = mail authentication happens through passwd-file, where for user1 its uid and gid are specified as in /etc/passwd and /etc/group. So how should dovecot be told to use user1 group instead of mail group? (or it needs some other solution?)

Hi there, I'm trying to let dovecot generate the userhome directory dynamicly via user_attr. If "uid" is returned from LDAP before "mail" everything is fine, but if "mail" is delivered before "uid" the localpart of the mailaddress is used in home path. e.g.: Mail: testuser(a)domain.de UID : test123 sometimes home is /mail/store/testuser and sometimes /mail/store/test123 depending on the order the ldap server replies. I'm currently using version 1.2.7 of dovecot in testing and 1.1.6 in production. Both have the same "bug". Mails are stored on nfs, indexes are stored local. [Dovecot] Dovecot Sieve some rules not working

Hope this list is the right place for a question about dovecot sieve. I have some rules of which some are working and some are not. But the second and third one don't work and emails matching those rules remain in INBOX. There are not errors in the errorfile in users home directory. The only thing I changed was to move the Folder "Computer &- Security" and changed the fileinto destinations accordingly. The folder "Junk E-mail" was not moved but the rule that worked before is not working anymore. I have no clue why only part of the rules work and where I could check what the problem coud be. [Dovecot] Problems with listescape and mutt

Hello, we are using Dovecot 1.2.6 with activated listescape-Plugin. Mutt mutt seems to have a problem with listescape (or my configuration [1] is screwed). When I log in with mutt over imap an press "c", I see al the folders, .Trash, .Drafts etc. But when I try to change to .Drafts (for example), mutt gives me the error the he can't find the folder "\2eDrafts". Is this a Problem with the listescape-Plugin or a Problem mith the mutt-Configuration? Any hints are welcome. I don't know if this tool already exists, or if not how difficult it would be to implement, but the following is an excerpt from the man page the developer needs to write ;) - "imapcopy", a command-line utility that connects to a given IMAP account and copies the mails to a second IMAP account. This is accomplished using only IMAP commands and may be used with any IMAP compliant server - and may be used to copy mails between servers. Hi, after setting up a KVM based virtual guest on one of our virtualization servers, we see dovecot die on that virtual guest regularly because of an alleged time shift. The virtual guest is Centos 5.4 based with dovecot 1.2.8 (at first we also tried with the original 1.0.7 (?) dovecot shipped with Centos). I wrote "alleged time shift" because there is no timeshift whatsoever, or at least I don't notice it anywhere else. ntp is - of course ;-) - up and running and no other applications have time troubles and I've even disabled the local clock as a time reference. As a proof that the time did not shift see this log excerpt: ------CUT------- Nov 29 14:02:22 athesia dovecot: IMAP(atester): Connection closed Nov 29 14:04:11 athesia dovecot: imap-login: Time just moved backwards by 4397 seconds. [Dovecot] Overriding Default Subscription Behavior

The subscription files we're migrating from have a "." for folder separation. We will be using Dovecot's maildir with LAYOUT=fs. It's looking for "/" as the separator in the subscription file. So, obviously we could simply write a script to swap the two characters. However, just curious if there are any options for doing this within a plugin (since we're already doing some things in a plugin) by overriding some of the subscription code.something like the "next_line()" in subscriptions.c. I don't see any vfuncs in this area, aside from set_subscribed() I believe.but maybe there's a better spot I'm not thinking of? One thing I've learned with Dovecot is that it somehow supports things I didn't believe it could/would, so I thought I'd ask. Tony

[Dovecot] PostgreSQL connection bug

Hello, There seems to be a bug which can affect systems using PostgreSQL as a user or password database. Usually there is just one postgres connection, but if the query fails for any reason, the failed connection is left open and dovecot will keep opening new connections for each auth attempt. I discovered this with a setup using PAM, AND a database to authenticate. Most users login with an account number (integer) which is looked up in the postgres database. Some users have a unix system account, and use their system username to log in (string). Dovecot was set up to check the database first, then try PAM. When a system user logged in, the SQL query failed because it couldn't coerce the system user's username into an integer. In these cases, Dovecot would still fall back to PAM authentication, and the user would log in, but the postgres connection would remain stuck. Gradually the number of connections would increase until postgres failed. I worked around this by converting the account numbers in the database from integers to strings. Now the query never fails and there's only ever 1 dovecot connection. Problem: Dovecot is totally and merrily oblivious to maildir INBOX installed in the usual /var/spool/mail/%u Software/system: Dovecot 1.2.8 running under Fedora 12 with 1.9 gig RAM + AMD Athlon LE-1640 CPU on a ASUS M3A78-EM motherboard (uname -a = Linux 2.6.31.6-162.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Dec 4 00:06:26 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux ) Dovecot has been installed from the Fedora repositories, not recompiled from scratch. System has only one hard disk and is on one ext4 LVM partition. My configurations are http://emdx.org/Dovecot/dovecot.confA.txt for "dovecot -a" http://emdx.org/Dovecot/dovecot.confN.txt for "dovecot -n" The mail is properly delivered by Exim in the proper place. Using a client (Thunderbird 3), if I copy some messages in the INBOX, they stay there, but they are nowhere to be found in the /var/spool/mail/%u directory. User mail is in ~/Maildir. I tried to make a symlink pointing to /var/spool/mail/%u and, of course, it does not work. I also tried giving chmod 666 to all files in /var/spool/mail/%u (and chmod 777 for the directories), this makes no difference. Otherwise, Dovecot works flawlessly and without no problems whatsoever in ~/Maildir. I can transfer huge volumes of email from the future old server and everything is rock solid. I just can’t get the INBOX. I would rather not fiddle with Exim and have it deliver the mail into ~/Maildir Google has been stellarly inefficient in helping me find solutions.

Hi, I have been experimenting with the Virtual mailboxes plugin [1] recently. This is my setup: the following dovecot-virtual file exists in a virtual mailbox called "todo": ------ dovecot-virtual ------ * -Trash -Trash/* -Spam -Spam/* OR KEYWORD $TODO KEYWORD todo ----------------------------- so if any mail in any mailbox except Trash+Spam has the keyword "$TODO" (that's what KMail sets when you mark a message as "action item") or "todo" (that's what Thunderbird sets when you put the Todo tag on a message), it should be shown in that 'todo' virtual mailbox. This works for the first time after I edit the dovecot-virtual file and then access the virtual mailbox (all mails I expect to be shown in the todo mailbox are there) - but further accesses always show the same content, even though I removed the keyword from one of the mails (and I can confirm that the keyword has actually been removed by dovecot, since the filename doesn't contain the letter corresponding to the keyword anymore). It seems that changing the dovecot-virtual file triggers the execution of the "search program" - but shouldn't simply accessing the virtual mailbox also trigger it? Or is there a (undocumented?) timeout between search program executions? Patrick. [Dovecot] 2.0.alpha3: imap-login segfault in hex_to_binary

Dovecot-2.0.alpha3's imap-login segfaulted with this backtrace: 0 hex_to_binary 1 master_send_request 2 anvil_input 3 io_loop_handler_run 4 io_loop_run 5 master_service_run 6 main 7 start Looks to me like auth_client_get_cookie() returned NULL in master_send_request().

One of my users is causing dovecot to exit with signal 6 and generate a core file. Seems to be in the mbox code.
