[Dovecot] Problem in sharing mailboxes across users

Hello everyone, I'm trying to configure dovecot to allow users to share their imap folders. I've followed the wiki and i'm near to accomplish my tasks, when i set ACL properly on folders using imap commands the other user can see the folder as shared, but i can't subscribe to it or even access its content using any email client (like thunderbird) couse it looks like the path to the shared folder is not complete. i mean when i go to "manage subscriptions" i can see the shared folder from the other users as "shared/user@domain/sharedfoldername" but since only "sharedfoldername" is present i cant subscribe to it. am i missing somethimg? like do i need to setup a particular directory tree on the filesystem? thnx in advice for your help. [Dovecot] Problem with allow_nets passdb parameter and Postfix

I use Dovecot for SASL authentication from Postfix. In Postfix main.cf I have: smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot It works good, but now I need to allow users to connect by IMAP only from given IP adresses. I've added extra field allow_nets to passdb in Dovecot, and IMAP authentication works fine. But now I can't connect to my SMTP server because when smtpd ask dovecot about user authentification, dovecot always denied it. Even if I try to connect to SMTP from correct IP, listed in allow_nets for user. In dovecot log I have messages about incorrect ip like this: dovecot: 2010-02-15 13:28:51 Info: auth(default): passwd-file(malamut): lookup: user=malamut file=/etc/dovecot/temp.users dovecot: 2010-02-15 13:28:51 Info: auth(default): passdb(malamut): allow_nets check failed: Remote IP not known dovecot: 2010-02-15 13:28:53 Info: auth(default): client out: FAIL 7 user=malamut Problem is clear: smtpd don't send client IP to dovecot authentication socket. But I need to limit the ability of connection to users only from specific IP. Both for SMTP and IMAP. How can I do that? I use dovecot 1.0.15 and Postfix 2.5.5 on Debian Lenny.

Hello all ( Postfix and Dovecot ) Trying to use deliver as mailbox_command with Postfix I get this error each time an email is arriving deliver(xxxxxxxx): Error: file_dotlock_create(/var/mail/xxxxxxxx) failed: Permission denied (euid=3003(xxxxxxxx) egid=3010(smig) missing +w perm: /var/mail) (set mail_privileged_group=mail) Doea this means I have to chmod 777 the /var/mail directory ? hi... i upgrading dovecot from v1.0.7 to v1.2.10, so i perform some modifications (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.1 and http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.2) but i have the following problem when i want to test installation: in dovecot.conf, i set the user mail: mail_uid= 72940 mail_gid= 72941 but when i try to start dovecot i have the following error: # sbin/dovecot Error: Error in configuration file /etc/dovecot/etc/dovecot.conf line 962: Unknown setting: mail_uid Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/etc/dovecot.conf # sbin/dovecot --version 1.2.10 i try, but i dont know how to fix them :( thanks in advance! :) -- Salu2 ;)

Timo (and anyone else who feels like chiming in), I was just wondering if you'd be able to tell me if the amount of corruption I see on a daily basis is what you consider "average" for our current setup and traffic. Now that we are no longer experiencing any core dumps with the latest patches since our migration from courier two months ago, I'd like to know what is expected as operational norms. Prior to this we had never used Dovecot, so I have nothing to go on. Our physical setup is 10 Centos 5.4 x86_64 IMAP/POP servers, all with the same NFS backend where the index, control, and Maildir's for the users reside. Accessing this are direct connections from clients, plus multiple squirrelmail webservers, and pine users, all at the same time with layer4 switch connection load balancing. Each server has an average of about 400 connections, for a total of around concurrent 4000 during a normal business day. This is out of a possible user population of about 15,000. All our dovecot servers syslog to one machine, and on average I see about 50-75 instances of file corruption per day. I'm not counting each line, since some instances of corruption generate a log message for each uid that's wrong. This is just me counting "user A was corrupted once at 10:00, user B was corrupted at 10:25" for example. Examples of the corruption are as follows: ########### Corrupted transaction log file ..../dovecot/.INBOX/dovecot.index.log seq 28: Invalid transaction log size (32692 vs 32800): ...../dovecot/.INBOX/dovecot.index.log (sync_offset=32692) Corrupted index cache file ...../dovecot/.Sent Messages/dovecot.index.cache: Corrupted physical size for uid=624: 0 != 53490263 Corrupted transaction log file ..../dovecot/.INBOX/dovecot.index.log seq 66: Unexpected garbage at EOF (sync_offset=21608) Corrupted transaction log file ...../dovecot/.Trash.RFA/dovecot.index.log seq 2: indexid changed 1264098644 -> 1264098664 (sync_offset=0) Corrupted index cache file ...../dovecot/.INBOX/dovecot.index.cache: invalid record size Corrupted index cache file ...../dovecot/.INBOX/dovecot.index.cache: field index too large (33 >= 19) Corrupted transaction log file ..../dovecot/.INBOX/dovecot.index.log seq 40: record size too small (type=0x0, offset=5788, size=0) (sync_offset=5812) ########## These are most of the unique messages I could find, although the majority are the same as the first two I posted. So, my question, is this normal for a setup such as ours? I've been arguing with my boss over this since the switch. My opinion is that with a setup such as ours where a user can be logged in using Thunderbird, Squirrelmail, and their Blackberry all concurrently at the same time, there will always be the occasional index/log corruption. Unfortunately, he is of the opinion that there should rarely be any and there is a design flaw in how Dovecot is designed to work with multiple services with an NFS backend. What has been your experience so far? Helloo, We are using dovectot lda with qmail-ldap, dovecot 1.2.10, sieve 0.1.15 lda is executed as exec /var/qmail/bin/preline -f /usr/local/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/deliver -s preline adds Delivered-To: header, everything works fine except vacation Feb 9 16:07:16 thebe dovecot: deliver(lazy): sieve: msgid=unspecified: discarding vacation response for message implicitly delivered to <lazy(a)thebe.org> Feb 9 16:07:16 thebe dovecot: deliver(lazy): sieve: msgid=unspecified: stored mail into mailbox 'INBOX' thebe.org is the hostname of the machine, oryginal recipient address has other domain .dovecot.sieve file looks like this require ["vacation"]; #autoresponder vacation :days 1 :subject "Auto Reply / Odpowiedz automatyczna" "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"; I did experiments with :addresses ["*"] without any luck. deliver only gets user and HOME directory form env variables provided by qmail, so it's unaware of the target email address. How to fix it ? I was thinking about deliver extracting target address from Delivered-To: header added by qmail's preline, or use DTLINE env variable, whitch qmail populates with Delivered-To header.

Running revision 9492:3efdbaab2960(Mon Nov 23) on AIX 5.3. I run dovecot out of inetd. Every once in a while I get the following error: Dovecot is already running with PID 2592842 (read from /usr/ladmin/dovecot-1.2.8/var/run/dovecot/master.pid) when I try to connect to the imap port. -Jonathan

Hi, I have, in one customer, a web server running on a Verisign-signed certificate SSL certificate. Everything works fine, IE and Firefox connects on https without asking anything, which usually happens on self-signed certificates. I'm trying to use that certificate on dovecot, but clients (Thunderbird basically) keeps saying the certificate is not valid. yes i'm using, when configuring Thunderbird, the same CN that was signed by Verisign for the web usage i've enabled verbose_ssl and got when thunderbird tries to connect: Feb 18 12:32:02 correio dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts): rip=201.86.xxx.xxx, lip=192.168.1.2, TLS handshaking: SSL_accept() failed: error:14094418:SSL routines:SSL3_READ_BYTES:tlsv1 alert unknown ca unknown CA ??? is that Thunderbird that is not recognizing the Verisign-signed certificate ? Do i need to, somehow, install some Verisign CA certificate in dovecot.conf ? when using a self-signed certificate, i also get an SSL_accept failed, but with different message: Feb 18 12:41:45 correio dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts): rip=201.86.191.114, lip=192.168.1.2, TLS handshaking: SSL_accept() failed: error:14094412:SSL routines:SSL3_READ_BYTES:sslv3 alert bad certificate despite the fact my certificates were generated for use with Apache, i can 'print' them, both of them, with the same commands i use to print dovecot generated certificates, with mkcert.sh. [Dovecot] revision control on maildir possible?

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to put a dovecot managed maildir under a vcs like system, for example git or bzr. I'd like to have a seamless history of all mail going in and out of my mailboxes, so a vcs like system seams a good choice for me. I'm not quite sure however if that would cause any problems to dovecot and what the best way of handling commits would be. [Dovecot] tls not working on ubuntu

Hello List, I'm new to dovecot. I have sucessfully configured dovecot with just virtual users on a centos linux box to my satisfaction; I can connect with TLS with disable_plaintext_auth = yes. This dovecot is also version > 1. Can't post exact version right now but it's what comes with Centos 5.4. On a Ubuntu 9.10 box here, I cannot connect with TLS (port 110) but I can connect with plain SSL (port 995). The config files between centos and ubuntu boxes are the same except for minor details. The following is the log entry Feb 17 21:38:18 ubuntu dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts): rip=192.168.0.101, lip=192.168.0.108 The output below is from a binary compiled from source. I have also tested with 1.1.11 (that I get from apt-get install) with the same config file. I have tested ubuntu with both Thunderbird 3 and thunderbird 2. I have also searched google as well as dovecot website. Dovecot sieve(0.1.15) is compiled with --with-dovecot but still uses /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver instead of /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver. Not sure what to call this - I'm actually working out the details as I type this. I want to have a valid username/password for an account for sending purposes - but when receiving this is an alias that broadcasts to several users. Example: accountspayable(a)mydomain.com - is an alias for jane(a)mydomain.com, june(a)mydomain.com, and john(a)mydomain.com. However - any mails sent (from a particular client software) should all only show "accountspayable" as the sender. How would I implement this? I'm asking here because Dovecot serves as the authentication mechanism for my SMTP server (Postfix) via LDAP lookups. -- Daniel

The idea of salted hash algorithms is to generate a different hash even if the same text is entered. Your results are even more impressive if that's the case. Sorry if it's less impressive, but I've certainly configured the VM for 4 cores. The cores are shared equally between all VMs, I've done no prioritization because I've not had any performance issues related to resource contention. Having 10x15k RPM spindles to seek across, and 512MB of cache on the controller, means I can give Postfix/Amavis/Dovecot 3GB of RAM to use, and 1GB of it is always used for cache, without ever dipping into swap. Not at all, that's what the VMware tools are for. The ESXi host is configured to use our NTP server inside the VPN, and the VMware tools package synchronizes the guest clock with the host. [Dovecot] sieve addflag has stopped working

Dovecot 1.2.10 in Debian, using Dovecot sieve. I have a sieve script, generated by Ingo, that's supposed to mark spam messages as "Seen" and file them into the Junk folder. In part it reads: require ["regex", "body", "imapflags", "fileinto"]; if exists "X-Spam-Flag" { addflag "\\Seen"; fileinto "Junk"; removeflag "\\Seen"; stop; } This has been working correctly for a long time, but since about 2 weeks ago now, the "Seen" flag isn't being set, although the messages are still being filed into the Junk folder. In two different mail clients, new messages in the Junk folder show up as being unread. Looking at the mail files that hold those messages, the file names don't have an "S" flag appended, while older messages all have the "S" and show up as already seen in the mail clients. I don't believe that I've updated dovecot recently, so I'm not sure why the behavior has changed. Note that I do have plugin { sieve_extensions = +imapflags } in dovecot.conf. I know that imapflags is deprecated, but it is still supposed to be supported. The way I have implemented things, this means two of these expensive lookups per incoming email (even if it was undeliverable!). At first this was using around 50% CPU on a dual Xeon domain controller. This was acceptable at the time, but after my optimizations we were able to move authentication to a virtual machine with 640MB of RAM and a single CPU core where it now stays below 20% all day. Changing the lookup to an indexed field probably cut the initial load by 90%. Adding auth_cache settings to dovecot.conf then further reduced load by more than 50%. Well, I suppose that screed should suffice for my first post. Well I've looked forward into the wiki and did not found my server have only system users ( no virtual domain ) and the wiki says : System users If you wish you use deliver for all system users on a single domain mail host you can do it by editing mailbox_command parameter in /etc/postfix/main.cf (postconf(5)): That's what I did but then I have this problem with DOTLOCK If I chmod 777 /var/mail directory it works but I do not feel comfortable with that kind of access rights ... [Dovecot] Capability COMPRESS implemented?

Hi, I just read that http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4978 ..is being implemented in Thunderbird 3. This is great news! It's been a long time since we last discussed this and I don't think it's currently implemented in Dovecot, but since Cyrus just added it, any chance of getting support in Dovecot please? (Fastmail seems to be supporting this effort) On a similar note we had a previous thread about supporting TLS deflate - any chance you could investigate this again and add support on the Dovecot side so at least it would be feasible to submit a bug fix on the Thunderbird side? (It looked like a one liner change back when we last discussed it?) [Dovecot] So, what about clustering and load balancing?

Hello world, so, with beta2 of Dovecot 2.0 being available, what is the preferred way to achieve load balancing and fault tolerance? As far as I can see it, there are basically two options: 1) Use a HA shared storage, export either a cluster filesystem or NFS, and have your dovecot servers mount that file system. Load balance these servers (Cisco ACE, ldirectord, ...) and there you go. Overall performance is limited by the speed of the shared storage and may further decrease due to locking issues, imperformant cluster filesystems and so on. 2) Set up every dovecot server with local storage and trigger a dsync after each change (pyinotfiy, incron, parse LMTP delivery logs, ...). Load balance these servers as before. Depending on the number of syncs that have to be done, mailbox replication may lag behind. The need to constantly spawn dsync processes may further decrease performance if you don't do it right (stickiness of established connections, replicating at most every xyz seconds). What are your opinions on that matter? Stefan P.S: I've set up option two in a test setup, though the incron/inotify part is still giving me a headache.

[Dovecot] POP3 with dovecot LDA and sieve

Hello. I'm using Postfix with Dovecot as IMAP, POP3 and LDA. With sieve rules I successfully move mails to specific mailboxes and this is great if accessing the account thru IMAP. However, when accessing thru POP3 I only get mails from Inbox. I wonder if it's possible to get real new mails, regardless of the folder they're in. Thanks for any thoughts. Arthur

Hello, As per a previous reply regarding POP3 I'm now trying to configure the virtual plugin. However I don't really understand how to modify the sql user_query to properly indicate inbox=yes. [Dovecot] deliver and cloning file permissions

Hi! I'd like to use deliver (dovecot-1.2.10) as LDA to deliver mails to my local users on my postfix-system. However, deliver tries to copy the filesystem permissions of the mail-spool-files to the user's index files, which doesn't work, since the files in /var/mail/ belong to the group 'mail'. Feb 13 00:21:19 leo-x61 dovecot: deliver(leo): fchown(/home/leo/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.log.newlock, -1, 12(mail)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=100(users), group based on /var/mail/leo) I know that dovecot tries to clone the mailbox permissions in order to support shared folders but it would be nice if there was an option to disable this (or to just try it and ignore the fchown error). I could manually change group ownership of all mailboxes from mail to each user's primary group or set the mailbox-modes to 0600 but I'd also have to do that for every new user. (Tools to create users like useradd from shadow-utils use hardcoded file modes and group ownership.) Is there any workaround? Hi All I needs to write plugin which converting messages by replacing entier message by one of parts of this message. In another words I need show part of multipart message instead entire message. Stream substitution in *mail->v.get_stream()* function gives incorrect results because mail indexed and cached before. Therefore I should wrap email during indexing too. something like: ----- struct index_transaction_context * it; it->ibox->mail_vfuncs->get_stream = convert_get_stream; ----- Is it enough or idea to replace mail stream by another will don't work anyway? Hi Folks, How scalable is dovecot. Do you think a machine with a dual core 2.8Ghz processor and 2GB of RAM would do a business with 600 users? This server will have a 100Mbps link to the net, however it will be access by the business using a couple of ADSL lines (Roughly 7Mbps each). i'm facing a pretty hard to debug problem when trying to use dovecot LDA (deliver) from postfix. After having all configured, mail deliver fails. This is from my maillog: Feb 12 21:27:54 correio postfix/pipe[12484]: 930F9F6105: to=<solutti(a)domain.com.br>, relay=dovecot, delay=0.21, delays=0.03/0.01/0/0.18, dsn=4.3.0, status=SOFTBOUNCE (Command died with signal 11: "/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver") at the same time, i have from my /var/log/messages: Feb 12 21:27:54 correio kernel: deliver[12485]: segfault at 0 ip 4c1be763 sp bff64c28 error 4 in libc-2.5.so[4c193000+13f000] so, seems deliver segfaults. so i tried enabling mail_debug=yes on dovecot.conf for getting some debug ..... and, with mail_debug enabled, deliver WORKS !!!! Ignoring my previous message just for a second, I realized that my config wasn't correct. I can browser all the way down to the folder, but I can't see anything within that folder. For example, consider the full path to the following 'Ashley-Dec09' mailbox: ~mail-Archives/2009/Ashley/Ashley-Dec09 In Thunderbird, when I hit 'Subscribe' I can browse down to '2009' and I can see 'Ashley', but I can't drill down into it and subscribe to 'Ashley-Jan09'. What am I missing here?

System: Debian 5.0.4 Lenny Kernel: custom 2.6.31.1 built from kernel.org source Dovecot: 1.0.15-2.3+lenny1 Available: 1.2.9-1~bpo50+1 Mailbox format: mbox Storage location: /home/$user/mail/ on ext2 fs Delivery: Postfix 2.5.5 local to /var/mail/$user As you can see Debian has a backport package of Dovecot 1.2.9 available to Lenny users, and it appears it is a big jump forward in terms of elapsed time and codebase. Debian ships Dovecot in a collection of 6 packages. I currently only use two, dovecot-common and dovecot-imapd. I'm guessing it would probably be wise to shutdown all my current Dovecot processes before starting the upgrade. Before I do this upgrade I figured I'd ask first to see if there are any gotchas or explosions awaiting me. Any warnings, hints, pointers anyone? Timo? Thanks. -- Stan

Hi I turned on fts squat to speed up full text searches over webmail. This works absolutely fantastic once the mailboxes are indexed. But when they are indexed for the first time I'm getting a fastcgi timeout after 30 seconds resulting into a internal server error on the webserver. In the background the indexing job is getting finished after 80 seconds for a 25k emails, ~300MB mailbox. Does solr allow user-offline indexing (no user interaction needed to kick on indexing) ? And the other question is, is there any mail user agent that would support server-side full text indexing and not create own indexes? Thanks, Philipp

[Dovecot] Purging a large folder... anything I need to be careful of?

I've got a large message folder (about 40G in 'cur') that I need to empty to a more reasonable size. Oddly, my Thunderbird e-mail client only sees about 2.4G of that, and has "looped" a few times. What I mean is, I thought someone was cleaning the folder out, but Thunderbird apparently was actually just looping back to 0 every 4 gigs and starting to count up again Ha. But that's a sidenote. So, since Thunderbird apparently is not seeing all of the messages, what is the safest way to delete the files straight from the 'cur' folder? IS that safe? Will I mess up any of the dovecot indexes in any way?? Dave

Our mail setup is as follows: ~/mail/ - This contains single mailboxes (Drafts, Trash, and others) ~/mail-Archives/ - This contains a hierarchy of folders containing mailboxes For example, a tree of ~/mail/ would look like this: ~/mail/ ~/mail/Trash ~/mail/Drafts ~/mail/sent-mail ~/mail/My Stuff ~/mail/Important ~/mail/test/SomeFolder <-- this would never happen, but I have to account for it during our transition A tree of ~/mail-Archives/ would look like this: ~mail-Archives/2009/MyStuff/MyStuff-Dec09 ~mail-Archives/2009/MyStuff/MyStuff-Nov09 ~mail-Archives/2009/MyStuff/MyStuff-Oct09 ~mail-Archives/2010/MyStuff/MyStuff-Jan10 ~mail-Archives/2010/Important/Important-Jan10 All of that works, I can open up Thunderbird and browser/read/delete messages no problem. However, when I try to move that 'test' folder from ~/mail/ into ~/mail-Archives I get an error message: 'Can't rename mailbox to another storage type.' The same thing happens if I try to move any of the mailboxes in ~/mail/ to ~/mail-Archives/ . Is there a way to fix that? Sorry for the fuzz on the thread earlier. I now have dovecots deliver (1.1.?)up and running and delivering mails to maildirs located on the AFS So if anyone is wondering, I would say that AFS works as a backend for storing emails without any ugly patches.

Is it possible to dovecot SASL check password in KDC when user sends plain text login? I know this is possible to do with saslauthd from Cyrus but prefer to stick with dovecot SASL.

Hello, I'm using dovecot 1.2.10 with mbox format (which implies layout=fs) and I would like to switch to maildir++ layout without changing format in order to implement subfolders for IMAP users. I understand that I should move the INDEX location to avoid some namespace conflict (it would be a good idea anyway: I'll move them on another disc :). If a user doesn't have a ~/mail directory and logs in, the directory is created for them. However, it is created with insecure permissions, 0770 (full group access). The problem is this bit in src/lib-storage/index/mbox/mbox-storage.c: #define CREATE_MODE 0770 /* umask() should limit it more */ The code then uses CREATE_MODE as an argument to mkdir_parents(), but mkdir_parents() overrides the umask setting and forces the requested permissions. There's no way to override this except to change the source code. It looks like the same thing is in dbox-storage.c and cydir-storage.c. I didn't really have much time to look at the beta versions of dovecot 2.0 (apart from installing it once and migrating most of my current configuration, purely for testing purposes). An exciting new feature is the LMTP support. In the default configuration I have seen, that one only listened on a Unix socket - will it support network (inet) sockets, too? What about concurrent deliviers? As of now, when using the deliver LDA together with Postfix, you have to make sure that only one recipient is passed to deliver at a time, so for multi-recipient mail, the system might spawn a large number of processes (two per recipient, therefore two forks/execve calls). Is that limit still imposed with the new LMTP server? Stefan

Hello, Occasionally (a few times a day) we get batches of Warnings in the log such as: dovecot: Warning: chdir(/maildir/x.co.uk/users/y) blocked for 18 secs This tends to last a minute or so for different users. /maildir is a NFS mount, and I'm suspecting it's the NFS server being busy and dovecot having to wait. Other than replacing the NFS server with faster hardware is there anything else we can do? Indexes are local, and Maildir is on the NFS. Hello list, I have found imap_allowed option in dovecot which do exactly what I need, for imap. Is there something similar for pop3 protocol? The main goal for it - is to enable pop3 access to specific users. Or maybe dovecot have some 'pop3=yes' or 'imap=no' args to userdb/passdb sections ? I know future dovecot 2.* versions will support rewriting for protocols, but this is required for 1.2 branch.

ZFS has support for compression on the file system ( lzjb | gzip | gzip-N | zle ). gzip eats CPU even at levels as low as 3. From the zfs man page The lzjb compression algorithm is optimized for performance while providing decent data compression. You can specify the gzip level by using the value gzip-N where N is an integer from 1 (fastest) to 9 (best compression ratio). The cost of CPU to support compression (gzip) vs the Cost of Disk if mboxes are not compressed? The other interesting feature ZFS (OpenSolaris) has is de-duplication, it detects if the block which is about to be written, is the same as another block and instead of writing the block it puts a pointer to the already existing block, saving disk space. Only problem with this is you would need to filter out headers which are different even when the to/body is the same. Cheers

I was wondering if I should add compression support to mdbox one mail at a time or one file (~2MB) at a time. The tradeoffs are: * one mail at a time allows quickly seeking to wanted mail inside the file, but it can't compress mails as well * one file at a time compresses better, but seeking is slow because it can only be done by uncompressing all the data until the wanted offset is reached I did a quick test for this with 27 MB of my old INBOX mails: (note the -b option, so it doesn't count wasted fs space) mdbox/storage% du -sb . 15120350 . Maildir/cur% du -sb . 16517320 . % echo 1-15120350/16517320|bc -l .08457606924125705623 So, compressed mdboxes take 8.5% less space. This was with regular gzip compression with default level. With bzip2 -9 compression the difference was 10%. Any thoughts on if 8-10% is significant enough improvement to make seeking performance worse? Or perhaps I should just implement both ways.. :)

Hello, I've recently saw a discussion on this list, about a standardised way of emptying POP3 mailboxes on the server - but no solution came up. Please provide a suggestion for the following situation: - I am running a stock POP3 dovecot server, on Fedora 12 (dovecot version 1.2.9) - passwd-file authentication via /etc/imap.passwd - users are virtual, sharing the same UID/GID; - storage is in MailDir system; - for remote users, server is POP3-only, since the administrative policy says that every user should download his messages on the local workstation, then delete them from server immediately after succesful download. - IMAP is allowed only locally, in order to be used together via stock squirrelmail Web interface (for emergencies only) However, there are users that check the infamous „Leave a copy on the server” checkbox (or equivalent) in their mail clients, eventually adding „Delete messages after X days”. Since I have no direct administrative control on the clients, I absolutely need a way to forbid the above behaviour at server level, in order to enforce the policy. The server's HDD is meant to store received messages from reception to the first access only. Filesystem quotas are not an option in this scenario, since the UID/GID is the same for all virtual users. What I need is way to make sure that "cur" and "tmp" subdirectories are perfectly empty after the user downloads his mail. (I will also need a way to make sure that users using squirrelmail leave no populated "Sent" and "Trash" folders on server's HDD, but that's offtopic here). What I mainly want to avoid are *POP3* users checking the „Leave a copy on the server” checkmark. Hello, until now I have use postfix and dovecot on the same server. Now I want/must split this both systems (server1 - postfix, server2 - dovecot). I used dovecot auth system for postfix ## snip ## smtpd_sasl_type = dovecot smtpd_sasl_path = private/auth ## snap ## but this does not work, if dovecot is not running on the same server. I did not find any information in postfix/dovecot documentation, how I could solve this problem smart. My only idea, but it looks like quick and dirty solution: On the postfix system a small dovecot systems runs only for postfix sasl via /var/spool/postfix/private/auth. (Or I use saslauthd with sql or imap) The postfix system (on server 1) delivers mails via transport map to the dovecot system. On the dovecot system postfix delivers this mails i.e. via ## snip ## dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=vmail:vmail argv=/usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -d ${recipient} ## snip ## to the mail boxes. Are there other ways, how I could solve this problem? My wish configuration: postfix sends the auth request via tcp/ip to the dovecot auth system and not via a socket. Running dovecot 1.2.4(imap only) on AIX out of inetd. I accept passwords(PAM for auth) and kerberos tickets. Occasionally we see dovecot-auth stop responding. I just kill it off and another process is spawned which works fine. It doesn't look like it is hitting any ulimits(11MB for memory). I issued a kill -11 and ran it through the debugger. Hi Dovecot fails to chdir() into users home directory giving the following error: Oct 9 16:43:49 jura dovecot: dovecot: Fatal: chdir(/a/home/mina) failed: Permission denied (euid=1118 0(mina) egid=11332(devel) missing +x perm: /a/home) Oct 9 16:43:49 jura dovecot: dovecot: child 14441 (imap) returned error 89 (Fatal failure) The reason seems to be that user primary group is "devel" and directory /a/home has ACL which gives execute permission only to the users in "domain users" group. Now the catch is that the user _is_ member of "domain users" group and is happily accessing his home directory over CIFS(Samba) for long time. Also, the user has no problem entering his home directory when using shell access. It just seems like the user lost membership of a bunch of supplementary groups. The group membership info is coming from M$ PDC via winbind and NSS. We have few users and can change the users primary group and/or relax the /a/home directory ACL, but overall this is not right. Shall I shut up or can we hope for a fix or at least explanation? [Dovecot] Question re: storing non mail files via IMAP

Hey Timo, I have a question regarding how dovecot might behave if a mail client (like, for example, Thunderbird) decided to store some of its config files on the IMAP server itself. Would there be a decent way of doing this with dovecot that wouldn't cause problems for other clients that didn't know about these files? Maybe there's a way to define a special folder that dovecot knows about at the top level of each users mail location that can be used for this kind of thing? All I'm thinking of are certain config related files, so they would be small, and would only be downloaded when they didn't already exist - ie, when someone adds their existing account to a new PC, the first time they logged in, TB could simply download all of the config files, restart itself, and voila, your pre-configured TB is ready to go...

I dont know to much the autoconf/automake...there is a command or something to do, to include my plugin in the Makefile for dovecot compile them when i compile the hole package ?? or i shoud go to the configure and makefile.am and put by hand ? I put my plugin in the plugins directory source tree.

Unfortuantely, I'm not a programmer myself and I don't feel confident to code such an utility (even if I perfectly understand your pseudocode). ;-) What I'm looking for is not even a hand-made script, but a production solution included in the stock dovecot RPM package itself - i.e a new, better form of the dovecotpw utility. Hi, came here to ask, if there are any ideas about a possible Dovecot feature, which would allow execution of a specific mailfilter or other program after new message is *moved* in specified mail location? The practical benefit on my side would be, that there wouldn't be any need to do getmail cronjobs, which unnecessarily fill up logfiles... (primarily for easy spam learning and reporting)

Hello, Is this the proper place to suggest an enhancement for the stock dovecot package ? The enhancement would be the following: For the time being, the dovecotpw utility offers a standardised way to interactively encode a user password in a certain scheme, say: dovecotpw -s CRYPT Enter new passord: Re-enter new password: etc. Given a *valid* /etc/imap.passwd file (passwd-file authentication), dovecotpw should be able to process it non-interactively and output another text file with all {PLAIN} passwords converted in the specified <scheme>, i.e.: dovecotpwd -s CRYPT if=/etc/imap.passwd of=/etc/imap.passwd.converted where /etc/imap.passwd.converted have the previously {PLAIN} passwords converted in scheme CRYPT. Passwords that were previously encrypted in other schemes than {PLAIN} shoud remain untouched. That will allow quick securing of old legacy /etc/imap.passwd files. Thanks a lot, Răzvan

I would like deliver to reject certain users. Since supposedly deliver only uses userdb, not passwd, I can't use deny=yes for that. Or does userdb support deny=yes? Yes, I should rather reject them right in the MTA, but that currently takes too long to implement. Or how to reject gast* in postfix using nss authentication?

Then I copied the emailfile e.g xyz:s to /myrestoredemail/cur/ How do i properly create a folder with its structures(index,etc) without using the RoundCube web inteface ? [Dovecot] disabling mail delivery for a user

How can I disable mail delivery for a user yet still allow access to their mailbox from another account which their mail is shared to? If I put them in a userdb which has "deny = yes" that just disables their ability to login, yes? And they would still have mail delivered. I want to disable their ability to login AND bounce all mail delivered to them, preferably solely through dovecot configuration. I am using lda, obviously, for mail delivery. (I could configure the MTA to reject mail for them if there is no other option.)

So for example if you had: userdb passwd { } You'll now need to use instead: userdb { driver = passwd } 2. Services now have default inet_listeners. You need to either remove your existing ones, or override the defaults by giving the listeners's name like shown in the new example master.conf. For example if you had: service imap-login { inet_listener { port = 1234 .. change it to: service imap-login { inet_listener imap { port = 1234 If you want to disable a default listener, you can set its port to 0. Some new features: - Added auth_verbose_passwords = no|plain|sha1. If authentication fails, this setting logs the used password. If you don't really need to know what the password itself was, but are more interested in knowing if the user is simply trying to use the wrong password every single time or if it's a brute force attack, you can set this to "sha1" and only the SHA1 of the password is logged. That's enough to know if the password is same or different between login attempts. - lazy-expunge: Support a single-namespace configuration. In this setup if mailbox has some expunged messages and then the whole mailbox gets deleted, they get merged into the same deleted mailbox. - protocol !imap { .. } adds configuration to all protocols except imap. - imap/pop3 proxying supports now async DNS lookups for hosts. There's a separate dns-client service doing the lookups using OS's own blocking resolver. - dovecot-config file changed in a way that it'll be easier to create external software linking against dovecot libraries. This made Pigeonhole's configure script a lot simpler. And of course there have been lots of fixes.

Does anyone know if dovecot support regex lookups for proxy/proxy_maybe, rather than mysql/ldap etc? I've been comparing it with perdition to see which one might be better for us to do layer7 username switching. Perdition supports the ability to not have any auth/db looks, but rather just a regex file that parses the usernames as they come in and forwards to the particular machine on the same port. For example: username:host ^[a-d]: 192.168.xxx.1 ^[e-k]: 192.168.xxx.2 and so on... I didn't think this was supported in dovecot, but I wanted to check first. I think this is going to end up being what we use to avoid NFS problems. We are testing with 1.2.9 and have found that with mail_full_filesystem_access set to 'yes', we cannot force indexes for folders under ~/mail to be stored in /var/dovecot/indexes/%u. /var/dovecot/indexes/%u/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index* is created just fine, but everything else ends up in ~mail/.imap. [Dovecot] Not understanding namespaces

I have been diligently reading about namespace in the DC doc and what I can find in Google. Like the blind men and the elephant, I see the nature of some individual bits of namespace, some syntax and the overall purpose (overriding defaults and providing extensions), but I don't see the whole thing and how it is used. I am looking to do some maildir testing in what is a mbox default system, so I thought to employ namespace to do so. I see that namespace(s) can be defined in dovecot.conf and I see that it can be defined in TBird (under ServerSettings, Advanced Account Settings), but it isn't clear to me how they are made to work together. Some questions: - Is it that you can define multiple namespaces in dovecot.conf and then specify which of these you use in the TBird server settings? - What is the syntax of the TBird namespace specification? -- ==== Once upon a time, the Internet was a friendly, neighbors-helping-neighbors small town, and no one locked their doors. Hello, i'm trying to do some delivery notification for each incoming address. Problem is that sieve vacation has :days but minimum value is 1 eg period in which addresses are kept and are not responded to - but that is not that i want. Is there other extension (in devel ???) or some other way (lda using procmail or maildrop) how to implement my request ? (Before migration we used qmail + procmail). The cryptic subject is the outcome of my looking into how to do a particular thing. I wonder if anyone else has solved this problem in a way that hasn't occurred to me. I'm using dovecot 1.1.11 on Ubuntu Server 9.10. I could consider upgrading to my own install of a newer dovecot if it made a difference to this problem. I have two populations of dovecot users. Some users have Unix accounts (with logins disabled), and so their password hashes are stored in /etc/shadow. These days, the default configuration for that is salted SHA-512. It's easy for me to change that scheme to something else if I want to, but the important fact is that I already have some users with passwords in salted SHA-512. The other population of users is purely virtual, and their password hashes are stored in a MySQL database in SHA-1 format (unsalted, but moving to salted wouldn't be a big deal). The database also has a column identifying the hash scheme, so SHA-1 isn't some assumption. I know that I have have multiple passdb in my dovecot config, but I'm looking to unify my two user populations and put them all in the MySQL database. As far as I can tell from the wiki, there is no SHA-512 in any version of dovecot. MySQL also doesn't have SHA-512. So, I don't see a way of reworking my password checking to accomodate the salted SHA-512 values currently in /etc/shadow. I'd prefer to not ask the SHA-512 users to update their passwords for this administrative reason if I can avoid it (but so far, that looks like the only answer). Any ideas?

The folder name here does not have the dot at the end? Why is this happening? The RFC says the output should not differ, as far as I understood it. [Dovecot] Recommended method?

Hopefully this isnt TOO general of a question. I have a raid server that runs dovecot and exports via nfs the maildir format store. I have 4 mail servers running exim that use dovecot to deliver over nfs I have been examing our entire setup and had the thought, would it be recommended to instead have another exim process running directly on the raid server and have my mail servers deliver mail to that rather than over nfs, if that makes sense? So mail would go from our postini frontend => mail cluster => final delivery via exim on raid server. Seems like this way I could make all the nfs config options go away and such. Thoughts?

[Dovecot] Pigeon hole sieve binaries and dovecot header install

Stephan, I've recently been playing around with packaging dovecot 2.0 and dovecot-2.0-pigeonhole, as well as the --enable-header-install configure options of both. This lead me to the following question. Should pigeonhole's sieve binaries rely on static libstorage / other dovecot libraries? It seems like they should instead use shared libraries, but I couldn't find a configure option to make this happen. That way, I could break my packages up like so: dovecot dovecot-devel libdovecot dovecot-pigeonhole dovecot-pigeonhole-devel And while pigeonhole/sieve might require libdovecot to run, it shouldn't require it to compile. Thoughts? I can provide a lot more detail about my compilation errors if you think its necessary.

[Dovecot] Does anyone know a good Dovecot hoster in europe?

Hi, though I am not sure this is the right place to ask, but I just try. I am looking for a better e-mail hoster providing me with a dovecot server (I don't want to do all the admin stuff and backup myself, if possible). I already googled a bit, searched the archives and had a look at dovecot.org but could not find an answer to this question. Since dovecot seems to get a fair amount of funding from finnish companies I thought there should be a good hoster among them. Any hints? Thanks Johannes

[Dovecot] Authentication failure (password mismatch?)

I setup dovecot on my laptop to practice on. I was following some of the information on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PostfixVirtualMailBoxClamSmtpHowto#Testing Your Setup I created the in this format: user:{plain}pass:1000:1000::/home/user::userdb_mail=maildir:~/Maildir for userdb passwd-file. I used smart for the user and wade for the password (its just for testing) and then attempted to log into the system. Im getting these errors: auth-worker(default): pam(smart,127.0.1.1): lookup service=dovecot auth-worker(default): pam(smart,127.0.1.1): #1/1 style=1 msg=Password; auth-worker(default): pam(smart,127.0.1.1): pam_authenticate() failed: Authentication failure( password mismatch?) auth-worker(default): passwd-file /etc/dovecot/passwd.dovecot: Read 1 users auth-worker(default): passwd-file(smart,127.0.1.1): lookup: user=smart file=/etc/dovecot/passwd.dovecot Its reading the file but the password is incorrect.
