Hi, I've merged the Mercurial repositories for Sieve and ManageSieve for Dovecot v2.0 into one repository: http://hg.rename-it.nl/dovecot-2.0-pigeonhole This simplifies the build process significantly. It also allows tightly integrating the implementation of the script storage with the main Sieve library, enabling the possibility to implement alternate means of script storage, like for instance a SQL or LDAP database. Building ManageSieve is still optional as outlined in the INSTALL file. The old v2.0 repositories will be archived soon. I'm slowly but surely progressing towards a first Pigeonhole release for Dovecot v2.0. Regards, Stephan

Actually I want to disallow POP3-logins for a certain domain, whereas users can still login into a webinterface via IMAP. got it, I have extdata working fine now for simple commands like redirect. vacation doesn't seem to be working properly - in that a message is not returned to the sender. Above you can see my configuration. The problem is to set up quota limit per user using limits from mysql. What I understood from wiki-doc my quota_rule from mysql query should override default quota rule - "quota_rule: *:storage=4M", but it aint happen. Question is what I did wrong ? :D P.S. There is no possibility that something wrong is with database, cause earlier I have been testing quotadict and dovecot updated my quota fields (bytes/messages) in another table. Hello, I am using dovecot 1.2.9, and the sieve plugin for filtering incoming messages into specific folders. The MTA is postfix, and deliver is called using the "mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver" directive. Is it possible to make dovecot's deliver discard duplicate messages? With cyrus there is a duplicatesuppression directive which works well (http://cyrusimap.web.cmu.edu/imapd/overview.html#duplicate) With procmail, this can be done with the following recipe, but I did not found an equivalent for dovecot: # One often receives duplicate messages for cross-postings to mailing # lists, or explicit replies to a post from you in addition to the # mailing list message. # # The following recipe eliminates all duplicate messages. It tells # formail(1) to keep a cache file of the Message-IDs of the most # recent messages you've received. Hi, after migrating to a new hardware (which is soo soooo mutch faster than the old one) I start to think about migrating from mbox to maildir. I'v read some docs and wikies and some questions are unanswered or maybe I skip the answers: - Is it possible to migrate the mboxes "silent" e.g. if a user logs in the mbox is converted? - regarding the Namespaces wiki article, it is possible to mix mbox and Maildir for one user. Is it possible to use this setup for all newly created accounts? or - Is it possible to have maildir set up for all newly created accounts while the old accounts still use mbox? [Dovecot] Dovecot Quota Problem

I'm using Dovecot LDA with Exim. I'm also using Dictionary Quotas in a MySQL database. I want to avoid backscatter completely, so I set "quota_full_tempfail = yes" and handle quota checking in the Exim RCPT ACL during the SMTP session. The problem lies in the case where a user's account is nearly full. Smaller messages will continue to come through, but a larger message would get queued for retry since it will push the account over quota. I need Dovecot's quota to exhibit the same behavior as Exim's "quota_is_inclusive=false". >From Exim docs: quota_is_inclusive=false When this is done, the check for exceeding the quota does not include the current message. Thus, deliveries continue until the quota has been exceeded; thereafter, no futher messages are delivered. Any ideas on how I can implement this inside of Dovecot? Thanks, -Ken Price

[Dovecot] Dovecot (IMAP) Hangs sometimes

Hi there! I'm using Dovecot 1.0.7 in RHEL 5.4 64bits as a IMAP/POP3 server. Dovecot authenticates users against an AD server via kerberos (pam configuration) and clients connect to it via IMAPs and POP3s with SSL. Webmail is in localhost and connects locally also with SSL. All is fine and people use the email server normally and with no problems. But, I have noticed that dovecot hangs sometimes. Usually twice a day somewhere between 09:40 and 10:00 a.m and in the afternoon at about 3:00 p.m. The problem starts when webmail takes long to authenticate and show folders and stuff. After a while it times out and doesn't connect. Then the clients (e.g. outlook, thunderbird) start taking long to connect and then they timeout. Important: Only IMAP connections timeout! POP3 continues ok. This latency keeps on going until dovecot finally hangs (after about 10 to 15 minutes). The problem is solved when I restart/reload dovecot. I'm not sure as to what's going on! I check the log, but it has been hard to pinpoint an exact event or to detect when the problem begins. Any ideas? BTW: what's the real difference between reload and restart? Thanks a lot! Mario

I'm running into problems when using sievec to compile the script - I'm not getting the plugin's variables that are provided in dovecot.conf's plugin {}. Hi, I'm really fuzzy about some problem on how Dovecot used to name files to store messages in Maildir. I have two identical servers (let's call them "First" and "Second"), and have Dovecot and Exim set up on both of them (Maildirs are used to store messages and boxes). First server is the server to be used by people around, and the Second server is backup one, the only thing it can do while the First is alive is to get (via rsync) First's mail spool. I set up rsync to run every 5 minutes, and that's quite well sync spools from First to Second. So if something wrong happens to First server we simple disconnect it from the network and put Second server in place of First. The problem is that files in Maildirs on First server are named like that: 1262610335.H798006P5447.first.domain.my,S=1962:2, 1262610402.H529761P5596.first.domain.my,S=2975:2, 1262610410.H787724P5657.first.domain.my,S=75691:2, ... and the files on Second server should be named like 1262610335.H798006P5447.second.domain.my,S=1962:2, 1262610402.H529761P5596.second.domain.my,S=2975:2, 1262610410.H787724P5657.second.domain.my,S=75691:2, ... As soon as I enter the Second's mailbox with IMAP client Dovecot used to rename files the way they should be. If after that I rsync spools I'll end up with double sized spool as there'll be both First and Second files: 1262610335.H798006P5447.first.domain.my,S=1962:2, 1262610335.H798006P5447.second.domain.my,S=1962:2, 1262610402.H529761P5596.first.domain.my,S=2975:2, 1262610402.H529761P5596.second.domain.my,S=2975:2, ... Long description for simple problem, yes :) I also tried to set: maildir_copy_preserve_filename = yes but still no luck. [Dovecot] sieve 0.1.14: vacation encodes Subject twice

Hi! I noticed the following problem in dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.14: The following vacation causes trouble with the Subject line: if not exists ["List-Id", "List-Post"] { vacation :days 7 :addresses ["test(a)netcologne.de"] :subject "=?utf-8?b?w4TDlsOc?= sadasd" "Bin gerade nicht hier."; } As you can see, the Subject is already MIME encoded according to RFC2047. Starting with sieve 0.1.14 the subject is now encoded by sieve again, so I get the following in my vacation mail: Subject: =?utf-8?q?=3D=3Futf-8=3Fb=3Fw4TDlsOc=3F=3D?= sadasd As you can see, the RFC2047 encoding is RFC2047 encoded, which results in an unreadable subject. According to RFC5230 section 4.3 this shouldn't happen: The ":subject" parameter specifies a subject line to attach to any vacation response that is generated. UTF-8 characters can be used in the string argument; implementations MUST convert the string to [RFC2047] encoded words if and only if non-ASCII characters are present. Implementations MUST generate an appropriate default subject line as specified below if no :subject parameter is specified. If I understand this right, sieve should do the RFC2047 encoding only if the string is non-ASCII. But the RFC2047 encoded string is already ASCII, so it should not be encoded a second time. I just compared this with sieve 0.1.13, which behaves different: It does not encode the Subject header at all. As long as the managesieve client (in our situation Horde/IMP) encodes the subject, everything works correct, while we run into trouble with 0.1.14. I think that there needs to some mechanism in sieve that checks whether the subject contains non-ASCII and does the encoding only in this case. I just checked out, that 0.1.14 does not encode a non RFC2047 encoded 7bit subject, while a 7bit subject starting with =?utf-8?... is encoded twice. [Dovecot] How to create UTF encoded folders?

Hey, as I understand from post [1], system folders with UTF-8 chars in their names will only be available for use with Dovecot2 and I certainly look forward to that, but somehow I was short of info about the current use of UTF characters like ā, Ž etc. Should I just omit thinking about modified-UTF-7, avoid those characters for the time being and then with Dovecot2 create UTF-8 encoded folders with MUA and also on fs? Hello, POP users often keep fetched mail on server, by checking for "leave mail on server" or similar option in their client. What would be the best way to disallow them using such approach. That is, what is the best way to force deletion of messages that have been RETRieved in a POP session at the end of that POP session? RETRieved messages will be marked as \Seen, but since users might also use an IMAP client (e.g. webmail), it'll be dangerous to simply delete all \Seen messages in user's mailbox. Hello again people, OK. I checked a lot of HOWTOs and documents. One specific document describes how one can make dovecot "talk" to postfix. The procedure is pretty straightforward (taken from the document) : -- . Configuring Postfix and Dovecot Turn off sendmail: service sendmail stop chkconfig sendmail off system-switch-mail (select postfix) -- This is for CentOS systems. My question is pretty simple. How exactly does someone tell dovecot (or the CentOS system) that the MTA used is not a pre-packaged postfix MTA but (in my case as you have pretty much discovered by now) XMail compiled from source (no pre-packaged version AFAIK for CentOS; but even if existed, I would still build it on my own) ? Hi, After setting up a maildir tree with :LAYOUT=fs and accessing it with KMail and Thunderbird, various mail client-specific problems appeared, but, as I didn't try with maildir++, I would like to confirm here: does that matter for an IMAP client much if I store mail on server as ":LAYOUT=fs" or maildir++? Can it see differences? I would like to think, that IMAP protocol should provide for all transactions in a standard way and its dovecot's/server's sole business how it stores mail locally. However... These results seem not very good: KMail: try creating a folder "sub" in "parrent" and you'll get "parrent.sub" along with "parrent" on server side. There, however, are no problems with Latvian unicode chars. Thunderbird: it can create a new folder in "parrent" as desired, but it can't display Latvian unicode chars (being such at server side) on client, while, if I try creating a new folder with Thunderbird with these chars, on server it will look somewhat like base64! So I'm really confused. All together these things are pretty frustrating, sure, but I'd like to understand whats the real problem here!

I am looking at porting and generalizing an old in-house patch that I'm using for the CMU Sieve plugin. It allows sieve script to test & lookup arguments from LDAP. Before getting too involved in this, I'd like to discuss my goals here in the hopes that someone else also thinks this would be useful. Many heads may make better design? Goal: ------ Allows scripts which are still stored on the filesystem to lookup parameters stored in an LDAP directory. I'm interested in this, but would like to extend this functionality beyond just lists as the example above demonstrates. 3. there are security and resource consumption issues with doing this, suggesting that limits should be set, or the use may have to be restricted to global scripts eg: sieve_before or sieve_after The question: - do others on this list see value in the functionality described above? there is a windows tool that strips attachments from emails on the server. i think it works for exchange. is there a tool or a way to do this for imap? i don't mean a mail filter that would strip them before the user sees them, i mean that the user could actively cooperate to reduce mail storage space, yet keep the original email on the server sans attachment.

Hi, when I try to compile dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.3 on my NAS I get the error below and I have no idea why and who to fix this. I have a Qnap TS239pro NAS with a Intel Atom CPU running Linux. I installed and configured the ipkg dovecot packet (1.2.beta1). Getting mails via fetchmail and send them with deliver to the IMAP. Not I want to include sieve to filter mails as this is not part of the packet I need to compile this by my own. I installed all needed packets and download dovecot-1.2.beta1 and dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.3. I do configure and make for dovecot and ./configure --with-dovecot=../dovecot-1.2.beta1 and make for dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.3. All run without any problem till the error below. [Dovecot] shared namespace problem

Hi List, I've got a problem, setting up shared namespaces. I am trying to setup a Mailbox (Maildir) which is accessible for some users. (For example mailbox "sales" and only sales representive have access to it) Mailboxes can be found under /var/vmail/<username>, whereas <username> looks like foo.bar or peter.griffin ;) Now, if I connect via telnet, loggin in as foo.bar and run a03 SETACL foobar peter.griffin lwrxk everything seems fine. Under /var/vmail/foo.bar is a acl-file dovecot-acl-list Under /var/vmail/foo.bar/.foobar is a acl-file dovecot-acl The contents looks ok. Also there is a generated file /var/vmail/shared-mailboxes.db. But if i now loggin in as peter.griffin and setup command a03 LIST "" "*" or a03 LIST "" "#shared" I can not find any shared mailbox. Above you can find my actual configuration. I've tried several versions of location: under shared namespace, but without success. Hope someone has a clue and point me into the right direction. [Dovecot] Dovecot Sieve: Vacation Recipient

Hi! I tried to use the sieve vacation plugin, but we're facing a little problem: our user's addresses are <uid>@<domain>, and if they want to use imap and sieve, they can have a forward to <uid>@imap.<domain>. The return-path, and hence the address the vacation message is sent to, is then <uid>@<domain> and not the original sender of the message. Is there any way to circumvent this? Sending a vacation back to oneself doesn't really make sense here :) Oh, and happy new year and thank you all for this great piece of software! -- Lukas

The webmail-frontend _is_ your client in the view of Dovecot. But since the cert is in /etc/ssl/certs, it should work, but if you validate the cert, the webmail may bark, because you access the SSL-cert with the CN "webmail.domain.gr" by another name "localhost". This is a sign of a man-in-the-middle attack, actually. BTW: Do your SSL IMAP/POP clients also use the name "webmail.domain.gr"? Otherwise they will get a warning as well, maybe each time they connect. [Dovecot] First time Dovecot user, really impressed so far. What is best IMAP enabled webmail package to go with Dovecot?

Greetings everyone, I'm new to the list as of today. I just installed Dovecot a couple of days ago for the first time, Debian Lenny Dovecot v1.0.15-2.3. So far I'm pretty impressed. I'm using mbox format with Dovecot auto-deciding to place mail in user home directories, which is great. It works very well with the Win32 Thunderbird 3 client over a small basic 100FDX switched net. I've got one list mail folder with 10,600 messages and server side body searching that folder via T-Bird is very quick, on the order of 5 seconds. It would probably be quicker if Dovecot threaded the search to use both CPUs, but pegging just the one CPU the search is still very darn quick. And this is on a dual P2-550 class machine with only 384MB RAM and a single 500GB 7200RPM SATA drive. I'd like to install a webmail package on the same host. I used Squirrelmail for this purpose many years ago and I wasn't wholly impressed with the user interface. I'm also not impressed by the fact that I regularly receive spam from compromised Squirrelmail hosts/accounts. I really like the look/feel of the Scalix Web Access AJAX based interface, but I can't/won't use Scalix as it's not supported on Debian, it has more features than I need, and the system requirements are a bit steep. So, what's the best FOSS IMAP enabled web mail front end with a modern look/feel? I'd like to run it on lighttpd, which I'm already using, not apache. Thanks in advance for any advice. My apologies if my first post is a little OT, but I figured there's probably no better place to ask about the best webmail front end for Dovecot than here. -- Stan

I get no errors when attempting to send or receive. However, my messages aren't showing up in the mailboxes. I am sending between users on the same server. Hello people, After a lot of wading through the dovecot documentation (which btw, is excellent !, everything lies under "dovecot/doc/wiki"), I managed to authenticate a couple of accounts. For starters, I want dovecot to work as an imap/imaps box and nothing else. So , I went ahead and created a "passwd" file with two users. Timo, you asked in private mail a few days ago if we're sure the filenames are forever unique. Im sure. I double checked it in the source code. Out of a user population of 4000, I get about 20 of these dumps a day, so it's not major issue, but I thought I'd follow up. [Dovecot] Failed IMAP Login Attempts in Logs

I had a user telling me that they can't login to the Postfix email server via Webmail (RoundCube) and I decided to see if I could locate this issue in the logs and understand if the user was simply using a wrong password credential and or something more serious. More than likely the person is just using a wrong password but in search of this on my logs, I don't understand why Dovecot doesn't log failed login attempts. Hi All, I'm running Dovecot 1.2.9 and have noticed the IMAP list command does not appear to send a sorted list of folders with list command. [Dovecot] Dovecot quota not working

Hi everyone, I'm trying to make quota to work in dovecot 1.0.rc15 in a Debian machine. Setting the limit to 1GB and starting to fill up the mailbox and nothing stopped me. It just kept growing and nothing happened. Restarted the service and nothing. I had already exceeded the 1 GB limit and nothing happens, the mailbox still goes bigger and bigger... The *"check_quota"* plugin for squirrelmail shows "0.0% of 1.0GB" in my browser. 1GB is exactly what it is defined in dovecot.conf by maildir. Is it necessary to configure something in postfix? Hi, I would like to integrate dovecot as lda for the hosting control panel alternc (http://www.alternc.org) I manage to run it for the mail but not for the alias. The problem is that in the configuration of alternc, the mails are seen as aliases in the form user_domain.tld. [Dovecot] imap default separator ignored?

Hi folks, I have configured the imap folder separator to '/' (see below). AFAIU the separator character does not affect the internal folder representation managed by Dovecot, but just the communication between client and imap server. Question is: What is supposed to happen if I try to create a folder named "a.b" in this configuration? Since '.' is not a separator character anymore, and since the client doesn't know anything about the internals of Dovecot, I do not see why Dovecot complains about an invalid character? Shouldn't it hide its internal Maildir structure? [Dovecot] Problems getting the antispam-plugin to work

Hi List, i'm running the current debian lenny dovecot-version (dpkg says it's 1.0.15-2.3+lenny1) and i'm trying to get the antispam-plugin ('1.2+20090702-1~bpo50+3') to work. Unfortunately dovecot always says "antispam plugin not configured" moving spam into the spam-folder. [Dovecot] What auth ?

Hello people, First of all a Happy New Year and best wishes to you all. I've managed to setup dovecot v1.2.9 on a CentOS 5.4 system and I am now, trying to make it auth. I would prefer virtual users and only want to make the IMAP/ IMAPS part work. I don't need POP3 or anything else. The rest will be handled by another SMTP/POP3 application. Now, I almost managed to make dovecot auth a virtual user with his password. However, when it seems it has passed the auth stage (either via IMAP _or_ IMAPS), the command line kicks me out. Here's roughly what I did : 1. Created /etc/dovecot/users and /etc/dovecot/passwd 2. filled in a couple of usernames/passwords encrypted in MD5 format 3. Ran dovecot from command line (service dovecot start [after I created the service ofcourse]) 4. telneted to localhost via port 143 or 993 (with the help of openssl: "openssl s_client -connect the.system.name:993") 5. typed : . login username@fqdn <password> Something worth noticing for step "5". If I do this logging-in with the "user@fqdn" format, the systems kicks me out. I, then, check the latest on "/var/log/dovecot/errors" to find that the system does not complain about the auth. If I do the same logging-in but instead use "user@localhost" (and not the fqdn), the system fails the authentication stage and does _not_ drop me into the shell. Go figure !! Anyway. My question, in essence, is this; Which type of auth should I use ? The manuals (that i've been sinking my head for the last couple of weeks) suggest I should use PAM. PAM, I cannot understand. At the moment, I _think_ I am using MD5. Any pointers here ? I've been reading the /doc/wiki directory for quite some time until it made no sense to me anymore (too much info makes me loose perspective). Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA, spyros

[Dovecot] disable lazy_expunge for some mailboxes?

How to disable lazy_expunge for certain mailboxes? My problem is I have a public namespace, whose mail is on a different filesystem than user mails. Some users are allowed to expunge on this shared mailbox, but lazy_expunge is stopping that from working since the mail has to cross a filesystem boundary to make it into the lazy_expunge namespace (location is under the user's home directory). As a workaround can I run a daily cron job to remove messages with the \Deleted flag on them? If so how do I find them? thanks -frank

1.2.9: configure: Added -llber to ldap libs. Fixes linking in some systems. and breaks it on others. Sun Solaris' native ldap library does not have a separate liblber. I normally check for ber_free in libldap, then in liblber, then fail. -frank

[Dovecot] Recalculate quota usage on demand

I would a method for Dovecot to recalculate the quota usage and rewrite it to the quota DB (Called on demand by a non-Dovecot POP3 daemon) I don't want the line deleted in the DB as this would only recalculate next time the Dovecot LDA or IMAP handles a message, and I want to keep the data availability contiguous. Can this be done?

using both thunderbird and roundcube with dovecot IMAP, I can create all the folders I desire, but cannot create subfolders; I also cannot delete a folder once created. I get a very un-informative error message from each. Is there a special setting required to permit sub-folder creation? folder deletion? [Dovecot] Using Push IMAP to trigger POP3 download

Hello all, I have an HTPC connected 24/7 to the Internet running Mythbuntu. I also have a web/email host that runs Dovecot for email and provides IMAP and POP3 access. I understand that Dovecot supports Push IMAP and I could, for example, use Thunderbird to connect to my email host to receive instant email as it arrives. I would like to add a Dovecot IMAP server on my HTPC (for increased storage, to aggregate multiple email accounts, to process messages with SpamAssassin and to provide a better webmail interface) and retrieve email from my webhost to my HTPC by POP3. To set up POP3 on my HTPC, I understand that the norm is to set a time interval (say, every 10 minutes) for clearing email. What I would prefer to do, if possible, would be to have Dovecot on my HTPC keep a Push IMAP connection with Dovecot on my webhost. When a new message is available on the webhost, my HTPC would be "pushed" a notification and it could do a POP3 download. This would allow it to clear emails with POP3 (and reduce storage requirements on my webhost), mean that I received emails instantly and not require me to have it poll for messages on a very-regular basis. Does anybody know if this is possible? As an alternative (not solving my space problem on the webhost, but solving the others), is it possible to set up Dovecot to "piggy back" off an existing IMAP server? In my example, my webhost does not offer good spam-checking and webmail. Would it be possible for me to set up a Dovecot server on my HTPC that received messages by Push IMAP, processed them with SpamAssassin (say, moving all of the spam messages to a subfolder) and provided a good web interface, all the while providing updates to the webhost's server? In some ways, this is almost more like an IMAP client than a server. I apologise if these questions are stupid! Hello: I have virtual users set up for the various mailing lists that I subscribe to. Everything has been working well in both Postfix and Dovecot. Postfix is configured to deliver to a specific mbox file within my mbox mail root. I can access retrieve and read email via Dovecot without any issues. Now I want to make my setup more robust and have these messages delivered to a maildir namespace. I have configured the LDA within the Postfix master.cf file: dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=vmail:vmail argv=/usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -f ${sender} -d ${recipient} I have configured the 'dovecot' transport within Postfix in the transport file: test(a)lists.schang.net dovecot: In dovecot.conf I have set up the namespace as follows: namespace private { separator = / prefix = "Lists/" location = maildir:~/MailLists subscriptions = yes } I'm having a hard time specifying the "Lists/" namespace in my userdb passwd-file: test:{PLAIN}linux:2000:200::/home/brian::userdb_mail=maildir:Lists/test I can't get the userdb_mail portion to work. For this user, 'test(a)lists.schang.net', how do I tell Dovecot/deliver to put the message in the 'test' mailbox within the 'Lists/' namespace? I'd appreciate any insight. Thank you. -- Brian Schang

[Dovecot] Issue Authenticating to a new dovecot-postfix installation

(Apologies if this is a resend, but I thought I had received a bounceback message.) I have installed dovecot-postfix and postfixadmin on an Ubuntu 9.10 machine. The userdb and passdb are both mysql. If I set up a user in postfixadmin they are able to send. I can successfully telnet into the server remotely by name on 110 and 25. I'm not looking for any authentication encryption/ssl any of that, just POP3/SMTP. When I telnet into 110 I can enter a username with user [username] then when I do pass [password] I get -ERR Authentication failed. I know the user info is correct. When I set up an account in Outlook Express I get "There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected:" Also saying -ERR Authentication failed.'. (0x800ccc90,0x800ccc92) So basically the same thing. I can attach the tutorial I used in as a .doc if that would help. Has anyone been able to get Dovecot LDA working where each user has a different UID? All the howtos on the Internet I have found set the UID of a mailbox as fixed for all users. Hello all, I have a Dovecot server deployed with a MySQL back end. If the user logs in and there is no quota set for them in table 'quota', the system will automatically inset a line with their username and current messages/storage. However after this it fails to update the information when to reflect new messages coming to their inbox after the original insert of the information. It will only update the information when a user deletes a message. Why is it not updating this information every time their mail is checked with IMAP? Cheers, Michael

Hi all. Recently I was looking for an IMAP-server with Oracle support and unfortunatelly I couldn't find one. It was a surprise for me but there is no such functionality at all. So I've chosen an IMAP-server with most flexible and convinient architecture that was Dovecot-1.2.9 and written a driver for Oracle RDBMS support. I used Oracle Pro*C so a Pro*C preprocessor is needed to compile the driver. There is a lot of logging there that should be removed. It would be great if you consider to include this driver to mainstream so Dovecot will be the first IMAP server supporting Oracle as auth backend. All related files are attached. Cheers.

Hi, I'd like to make a filtering threshold for users to let them deal with spamassassin spam-level starred < 8 themselves, but spam-level starred higher than 8 should be discarded how can one do that with the "anyof" option ? the following doesn't work with a test email with "gtube", which scores > 999 : # require "fileinto"; if header :matches "X-Spam-Level" "\*\*\*\*\*\*" { fileinto "discard"; } and I think it would be nice to have not so many lines in the globalsieverc file. Hello, Here is a small script that I've been running to test a problem I've been seeing. Shouldn't this result in the mail being delivered to the inbox as a new message (ie. without the \Seen flag)? require "imap4flags"; addflag "\\Seen"; removeflag "\\Seen"; Every message gets delivered to the inbox as though it's already been read. Using Dovecot 1.2.9 and Pigeonhole Sieve 0.1.14.

Any thoughts about the following? hostname setting currently defaults to system's host name, without the domain part. It's used (in v2.0): - dovecot-lda (new deliver): If -a parameter isn't specified and there's no Envelope-To: header, the destination address is generated as <username>@<hostname setting> - lda/lmtp: In generated Message-Id: headers ("dovecot-stuff@<hostname>") for rejects, vacation, etc. - lda/lmtp: in reject messages as part of MIME boundary, and also in "Reporting-UA: <hostname>; Dovecot mail delivery agent" header. - lmtp: In the protocol, e.g. "220 <hostname> Dovecot ready" or "421 4.4.2 <hostname> Disconnected for inactivity" - lmtp: In added Received: header Seems pretty clear to me that it should be host.domain.org, not just host. So I suppose I'll change that default. The other thing is postmaster_address. That's accidentally been postmaster(a)example.com in dovecot-example.conf and uncommented. So who knows how many installations have their postmaster address set to that.. I'm thinking of just commenting it out in next v1.2 release so admins needs to change that. But for v2.0 maybe there could be a good default for postmaster_address? "postmaster@<hostname setting>" I think? Because it's postmaster(a)host.domain.org instead of postmaster(a)domain.org, it might not be correct in most installations, but I'm thinking that maybe it's safer. Someone trying out Dovecot on testbox.biguni.edu probably doesn't want bounces going to postmaster(a)biguni.edu..

I'm confused about dovecot-shared. If the file exists, \SEEN flags are NOT shared? So if dovecot-shared exists, flags are actually private. The doc seems clear on this (albeit not worded very well). I only question it because intuitively you would think the opposite. If backwards compatibility is the reason for this reverse behavior, the file should have been named dovecot-private-flags. In fact that's a great name to stick a list of flags (one-per-line) that are private. -frnak

Thanks for the reply. I won't be changing any files, or even accessing them, i'll simply be passing the filename along to "another system". I'm not allowed to change this other system or any of its interfaces. The other system has been in place and is "off limits" as far as changes go (I'm told). To make it simple, this other system needs to be notified of any flag changes on emails. So, when we detect a flag change (in our plugin), we need to pass the message filename along to this other system. Hello, while installing Dovecot sieve, I am not able to deliver email for root. The strange thing is, that mails to ordinary users get delivered. And no, I do not use virtual mail, just ordinary unix accounts with an entry to passwd / shadow. Also before switching from Postfix deliver to Dovecot deliver, everything worked fine. Current versions for dovecot and postfix are: dovecot-1.2.8 postfix-2.6.5 Anybody an idea, where I misconfigured something? [Dovecot] Mail storage creation fails with virtual users

So I have recently set up dovecot with a virtual users dovecot.passdb file, but when I attempt to telnet in, it fails because my virtual users don't have proper permissions to create mailboxes. I don't want to have to create actual users for each email account. Any idea as to what to do? Hi, I just upgraded to from dovecot v1.1.15 to v1.2.9 so I can use dovecot- sieve. Most everything seems to work but my webmail (roundcube) clients are not seeing their subscribed folders. Hi, I've been using an attribute template for some time without any problems. My accounts are on an LDAP server and I have an attribute maildropPath which is the maildir path for the user relative to /home/vmail That is, user "mabsatz(a)example.org" has, in attribute maildropPath the string "example.org/mabsatz", meaning that the maildir is in /home/vmail/example.org/mabsatz This is configured like this (taken from http://wiki.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/LDAP/Userdb) user_attrs = maildropPath=mail=maildir:/home/vmail/%$ pass_attrs = uid=user,userPassword=password,maildropPath=userdb_mail=maildir:/home/vmail/%$ and it works OK. Now I want to start using sieve and, since all accounts are virtual, I want to use a subdirectory "sieve" within the maildir to hold the scripts, so I need (I think) a userdb home to point to the same path... being a monkey I tried to imitate (or rather, extend) the previous configuration like this: user_attrs = maildropPath=mail=maildir:/home/vmail/%$,maildropPath=home=/home/vmail/%$ pass_attrs = uid=user,userPassword=password,maildropPath=userdb_mail=maildir:/home/vmail/%$,maildropPath=userdb_home=/home/vmail/%$ Alas... this didn't work... that is, apparently, the "home" attribute works OK (I got my scripts on the /home/vmail/example.org/mabsatz/sieve directory), but the "mail" attribute got lost and mail is being delivered to /home/vmail/mabsatz. Is there a way to use more than one attribute template AND that both use the same LDAP attribute? Otherwise, can someone think of a better way to do what I'm trying to do? [Dovecot] Deliver EX_TEMPFAIL's without giving any information

Hi all. I've had a hard time trying to find out why deliver isn't working after I've updated dovecot from v1.11 to v1.2.8. It just gave me EX_TEMPFAIL without any info in the logs. My deliver was setuid-root. Once I've made a simple shell wrapper script for the deliver executable which saves deliver's stdout+stderr, I've found the reason: /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver must not be both world-executable and setuid-root. This allows root exploits. See http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA#multipleuids Did a 'chmod o-x deliver' and fixed groups/owners and now everything works as it should. I think this error message should go to log files, not just to stdout/stderr. And it's worth to describe this behaviour in the Wiki. Cheers, Denis

Hello, I'm new to dovecot and I've been taking my time examining what makes dovecot work. If I have imap and pop3 listed as protocols, dovecot -n outputs: mail_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 I don't understand why imap is listed twice once as (default), and the other without (default). As a secondary question, why would you want a default of imap as opposed to pop3? Thanks. John

Hi,Using Dovecot 1.2.9 with Maildir and Layout=FS.In a plugin, i'm overriding "update_flags":void my_mail_update_flags(struct mail *_mail, enum modify_type modify_type, enum mail_flags flags)For this email which is having its flags updated, I need to retrieve the physical filename of the message. I see where using:mail_get_special(_mail, MAIL_FETCH_UIDL_FILE_NAME, &fname);...I can retrieve part of the filename, but without the ":2" and the flags part.Is there a method I can use to get the whole filename (without having to reassemble it myself). [Dovecot] Design: Optimizations for high-latency storage backend

Mainly intended for future support of key-value (etc.) databases, but this is probably useful even for regular disk I/O. By using async I/O for disk access, the OS could more intelligently do seeks on disk to read the wanted data with less latency. Problem #1: Accessing message body while searching (e.g. SEARCH BODY). The idea is that searching wouldn't block. Caller would typically use mailbox_search_next_nonblock() function, which can return "try again later" result. Whenever search sees a query that could potentially block (e.g. SEARCH BODY, or searching a header that might not be cached), it goes into a slightly different search mode: - the whole search would typically be run from beginning to end immediately, and the search result state would be stored for each message. - whenever search runs into a situation where the result can't be determined without opening message body, it issues a prefetch command for that message, marks the result for the message as "incomplete", and continues to the next message - once the search is done with all messages, it starts replying to the caller. if the next search result is incomplete at the time, the search returns "try again later". optimizations: - probably there should be prefetch limit (a queue) so that only maybe 10 requests are actually pending at a time. - probably the whole search shouldn't run immediately. maybe it should stop after having 10 requests pending. - prefetch could return only the needed parts of the message, such as "only header" or "only body" (or in future something like "message without attachments") There would be a new call, something like mailbox_search_set_nonblock_callback() that specifies a function to be called when next search result is available. The callback then would continue the search. This is similar to how IMAP SEARCH is already implemented, except currently when mailbox_search_next_nonblock() returns "try again later", Dovecot simply adds a 0 second timeout after which it's called again (that's enough for Dovecot to do some other pending work). Problem #2: Accessing index cache while searching. Cache file is typically in memory or in low-latency disk already. Anyway something similar to #1 could be implemented for it. "Make sure cache x..y bytes in cache file have been read to memory" call or something. Problem #3: Fetching message body (and uncached fields). The nice thing about lib-storage's fetching API is that the caller already specifies what fields it intends to access in mailbox_search_init(). So this code can use a similar technique than searching: - callers only use mailbox_search_next_nonblock() - which keeps returning "try again later" until the message body has been read to memory - trying to access a field that's not specified in wanted_fields in mailbox_search_init() could be (optionally) treated as a programming error and cause a crash instead of a blocking wait. Problem #4: How to drop latencies between IMAP commands? For example a (stupid) client issues commands: a FETCH 1 BODY.PEEK[] a FETCH 2 BODY.PEEK[] ..etc.. You really don't want to a delay between each command. So what Dovecot code needs to happen is to start processing the next command while waiting for previous one to finish reading the body to memory. A lot of this actually already works as intended, but there are some cases that don't, such as FETCH + SELECT (see #5). Problem #5: Opening mailbox index. So if your indexes are also stored in high-latency disk, how do you optimize getting STATUS for each mailbox? Again, a similar idea than before: Create a new mailbox_open_nonblock() function that calls a given callback function when the indexes are read to memory. During the wait it can continue processing more STATUS commands (hopefully client sends them all at once, instead of waiting for each reply before sending next STATUS). .. I think that's all of the problematic cases that could cause blocking. And the solution is always the same: Use prefetching and "try again later" status code with a callback function to be called when it's ready. Luckily there are only two functions that need the above behavior, implementing async callbacks for all functions would have made programming it horrible. The main problem will then be to optimize what and how much to prefetch. For example in the cache file case, should the cache be read to memory when mailbox is opened, or should it be delayed until something is actually wanted to be read from it? Should all of it be read, or should Dovecot attempt to be smarter to reduce memory usage and I/O bandwidth, so e.g. if the cache is wanted to be accessed to 3rd last message, maybe just read the cache file beginning from that message to EOF? Transaction log files have a similar problem. Actually all of this is similar to how Dovecot attempts to cache them to memory when using mmap_disable=yes, so it's not really a new problem.

[Dovecot] Design: Mailbox list indexes

I drove over 2000 miles in recent days, so I had some time to think about future Dovecot things. :) Maybe for v2.1 or v3.0, whichever I happen to release next. Here's the first thought: The main idea behind mailbox list indexes was to make getting STATUS information for mailboxes from a single index file. The code was already written for Dovecot v1.1, but it was disabled because of bugs I never got around to fixing. It also was maybe a bit overdesigned to make it fast with thousands of mailboxes. There were two indexes: Mailbox UID -> name map index, and UID -> status info index. I don't think most people have that many mailboxes. Using two index files just makes the common case slower. So the new mailbox list index could be a single index (read/written to using the same index file API as for mails). Index's header would contain an ID -> string map. So basically an array of {uint32_t id, char nul-terminated-name[]} records. Each index record would contain: - mailbox UID number (32 bit) - ID number (32 bit), pointing to a string in the header. That'll be this mailbox's name. - parent mailbox UID (e.g. if parent's name is "foo" and our name is "bar", the mailbox is "foo/bar") - mailbox global UID (128 bit) - mailbox flags (\Noselect, \Nonexistent) - STATUS information: message/unseen counts, last-non-recent-uid (for recent count), uidvalidity, uidnext, highest-modseq - storage backend specific timestamps So typically the whole index would be read into memory and the mailbox tree would be generated based on the parent UID pointers. If there are any \Noselect or \Nonexistent mailboxes, they just have their GUIDs and STATUS info zeroed out. Each time a mailbox is created or renamed, a new name ID is added to the header with the given name. I don't think it's worth it to try to reuse old IDs. Unused names (after delete/rename) will be dropped sometimes later. Whenever STATUS information changes while accessing mailbox, the STATUS info is updated in mailbox list index. Also unless mailbox_list_index_dirty_syncs=yes (or something similar), the index can't be trusted by itself. So before trusting the index, Dovecot needs to check if the index is up to date by comparing the timestamps to what exists in filesystem. For example with Maildir there would be new/ and cur/ directories' mtimes. Then there's the problem of how to notice externally added/deleted/renamed mailboxes. It'll be immediately noticed if such mailbox is tried to be opened, but what about LIST replies? One possibility would be to refresh the list once when session begins and after that just have LIST return indexed mailboxes. Another would be to keep track of directory mtimes and keep stat()ing the dirs to see if something changes. The latter is probably more trouble than worth.. Besides caching LIST and STATUS replies, there's one additional thing I thought of that the mailbox list indexes will be useful for: atomic mailbox list updates. Even if the backend doesn't support e.g. atomic RENAME (such as Maildir++), this can be made practically atomic using the list index. CREATE, RENAME and DELETE commands begin by writing and committing a record to the mailbox list index about the change. Then they'll start the actual change, and finally write to the index that the change is complete. If it crashed in the middle, the next session would finish it. If another session tries to do a conflicting change before the change is finished, it would wait for the previous one to finish. (Probably practically the index would be write-locked and all changes would wait for previous ones to finish.) And the final functionality of this mailbox list index is for the future support of key-value (etc.) databases: The mailbox list index would be the authoritative list of mailboxes. It wouldn't be stored anywhere else.

[Dovecot] checking all folders for new mail (IMAP STATUS command)

Hello, I use Thunderbird as IMAP client and do a lot of server-side filtering with Sieve scripts. To be notified of new mails, I want to check all folders (a lot of them...) at once for new mails, and not only the inbox. According to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Checking_for_new_messages_in_other_folders_-_Thun… it should be sufficient to enable one setting -- given that the IMAP server returns the STATUS command correctly. I still run Dovecot 1.0 (from Debian 4.0), and it seems this version doesn't support the IMAP STATUS command, as I have to explictly query each folder with the second mentioned setting. What is the recommended way of checking all folders for new mails? Is there any server-side setting I can activate? Do newer versions of Dovecot support the STATUS command in the way Thunderbird expects it? Or does Dovecot even offer an option like the mentioned IMAP_CHECK_ALL_FOLDERS=1 and IMAP_ENHANCEDIDLE=1 in Courier? Sorry for my maybe dumb question... :-) Thanks, Florian

I am using Dovecot 1.2.9 "dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.14" and discarding email seems to work fine. The things I can think of are: 1) Wrong privileges for deleting. What user does procmail / deliver run as? 2) Old Bug in Sieve (http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-July/024290.html) 3) If it fails just sometimes, what is the difference between discarded and nondiscarded mails. If this does not turn up something, I do not have an idea what is going wrong. Only bugfix I then can you provide with, is not to discard but to move those files to a folder 'SPAM' and delete them by hand. Tobi

Hi, I'm currently running Dovecot 1.2.8 with dbox mailboxes. I've configured the use of shared mailboxes. I'm able to only see the top-level mailboxes: e.g. Inbox LogWatch Trash Sent but not LogWatch/Server1 LogWatch/Server2 Is this a know limitation of a bug? Rgds, N.

[Dovecot] sieve vs deliver -m

I'm invoking deliver through postfix with a dovecot transport in master.cf, using the -m ${extension} argument. If I have no sieve script, or a sieve script with an implicit keep, the mail gets correctly filed into the -m mailbox. However if the sieve script has an explicit discard, this gets honored if it doesn't match another sieve action. Shouldn't -m take precedence? I would say that if an extension is present any other sieve action should be ignored, perhaps just sieve_before should be run then the message filed per the extension. -frank

[Dovecot] basic understanding of imap in dovecot

I have always used a pop3 daemon, and switching to dovecot has been my introduction to imap. Imap is foreign to me. I am wondering if I am a little off-track here, and would like some clarification. My MTA (exim) delivers email to: /mail/user dovecot, sucks that mail from /mail/user TO /home/user/mail/<filenamesoffolders> dovecot IMAP further uses /home/user/mail/.imap/folders/{.index / .index.cache / .index.log} the mail folder which exim uses doesn't seem to get emptied by dovecot when it sucks the email into /home/user/mail/<filenamesoffolders> when using IMAP. If POP3 is used via dovecot, then it appears that the interaction is directly to the original exim folder and that it does indeed empty (or at least it has the "FOLDER INTERNAL DATA" entry). I suppose my question is, is there a way to have dovecot empty/parse the original exim mailbox so that the customer email isn't sitting in two spots, taking up double the space. This would be in the IMAP environment only, as POP3 seems to be fine. Any online references available to help a newbee understand IMAP? Thanks!

[Dovecot] Permissions errors while reading messages via IMAP

Greetings all, I have been trying to setup a new system using Postfix and Dovecot to manage email for a bunch of virtual domains. So far everything is great, and I am now at the point where I am trying to build a webmail interface for the system. I'm using RoundCube for now. The tutorial I have been working from is here: http://workaround.org/articles/ispmail-etch/ Which seems to be a decent enough read. At this point I can login without issue but I can't see any mail messages. [Dovecot] imap-login crashes after upgrade to Dovecot 1.2.8 Linux 64-bit

Hi all, We moved our Dovecot installation first of all to have all folders and inboxes on NetApps via NFS (with indexes local) then from a physical Solaris 8 4-way UltraSparc server running Dovecot 1.2.5 (32-bit) to a virtualised Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit server with a single virtual processor (in VMWare ESX 3.5) running Dovecot 1.2.8 (64-bit). This evening I tried with "login_process_per_connection = no" with no problems, except more CPU load and needing to increase login_max_processes_count (and strictly speaking the max fds set with ulimit -n would need to be increased, though I didn't do that as it would have involved killing and restarting the master process - come back Solaris plimit!) Just after midnight, I switched back to "login_process_per_connection = no" and set "login_max_connections = 32" and managed to get core dumps enabled, hence the above! Apart from this problem, the virtual machine has been doing extremely well, so it's not CPU or I/O load related. I'm not sure whether the problem is caused by the switch from Dovecot 1.2.5 to 1.2.8, Solaris to Linux, physical to virtual, or 32-bit to 64-bit! Perhaps we changed too much at once, but it did mean we kept the service going while power was turned off in our main machine room last weekend ... [Dovecot] expire db(s)?

with two separate dovecot/backend servers accessing one central mysql server, will it be ok to have them both use the same expires table? Or will that confuse the actual dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool.sh cronjob since some of the entries mailboxes won't exist locally? Ben

[Dovecot] qpopper to dovecot migration

Heya, We are in the process of migrating from qpopper to dovecot as POP3 server (and IMAP as well) and we hit the UIDL issue with dovecot. Qpopper uses its own algorithm to create UIDL values and if you set it up to write them down in the mbox file as X-UIDL, then dovecot can use them (pop_uidl_reuse = yes). But if you don't use that feature from qpopper, than X-UIDLs are missing and there is no way to create the same UIDL values. So, I was wondering if anyone else hit that issue and maybe knows how to address it (writing an extension or something)? Thanks in advance, regards, Jernej
